From Coffee to Trekking: What to Do in Karnataka's Coorg Region

The Kodagu region, often referred to as Coorg (the English version of its name), is an extremely picturesque and alluring mountainous area in southern Karnataka, not far from Bangalore and Mysore. It's separated from Kerala by the Brahmagiri range. Coorg is one of the top travel destinations in Karnataka , and has particular appeal for nature lovers and those wanting to enjoy the great outdoors. These places to visit in Coorg are all popular attractions. However, you'll need your own transport as they're spread out all over the region.

Coffee Plantations

Coorg is renowned for its coffee plantations, which contribute around 60% of India's coffee production. It also has plentiful teak, rosewood, and sandalwood forests. The best way to experience the coffee plantations is to stay at one of the many homestays and resorts that are situated on coffee estates. Alternatively, join this coffee plantation tour. You'll be able to walk through the plantations, as well as sample fresh coffee and learn about the coffee making process. It's fascinating!

Abbey Falls and Irupu Falls are two of the biggest waterfalls in the Coorg region. They're best viewed just after the monsoon season but have cascading water all year around. Abbey Falls, located about 15 minutes north of Madikeri, is most accessible. In the other direction, Irupu Falls is nearly two hours south of Madikeri and an hour from Nagarhole National Park. Many people prefer Irupu Falls to Abbey Falls, and it can be followed with a scenic drive through Nagarhole to Bangalore. The area around Irupu Falls is abundant with butterflies in peak season, after the monsoon.

Mountains and Hiking

Perfect for hiking, the Coorg region has some enticing peaks and valleys. One of the most popular routes is from Kakkabe to Thadiyandamol, the state's highest peak. Allow at least five hours for this hike. Many people also enjoy trekking from the Brahmagiri range, starting from Virajpet, to Irupu Falls. It's an arduous hike though, through dense jungle. Hiking to Mandalpatti is commonly combined with a visit to Abbey Falls. It's the most popular hike in the Pushpagiri forest range. Most Coorg homestays and resorts offer hiking and trekking activities. Thrillophilia also offer a one day Mandalpatti trek and two day Thadiyandamol trek.

Dubare Elephant Camp

Dubare Elephant Camp is an elephant training camp operated by the Karnataka government. You'll be able to learn all about elephants, ride them, and even scrub them while they're being bathed in the river. The camp is open daily from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. The elephants are located on an island within the camp and it's necessary to take a boat to get there. Hence, if you want to experience the bathing try to arrive as early as possible, preferably by 9 a.m. However, do be aware that this is a government establishment so don't expect good infrastructure or for it to be well organized. Furthermore, Dubare is a training camp, not a sanctuary or rehabilitation center. Those who are concerned about the treatment of elephants are advised to avoid visiting it, as the elephants do get chained up and disciplined. It's possible to stay at one of the cottages at the camp. The camp is located just off State Highway 91, near Kushalnagar, about an hour east of Madikeri.

Namdroling Nyingmapa Tibetan Monastery and Golden Temple

One of the must-see Buddhist monasteries in India , this monastery is home to one of the largest Tibetan settlements in India. The amount of gold in the prayer hall and temple is quite overwhelming, as too are the immense gold statues of Buddha. It's located in Bylakuppe, near Kushalnagar. Do note that visitors require a Protected Area Permit to stay within the monastery as the area is restricted. However, day trips are allowed. Bring your passport or other suitable identification. Madikeri Town

If you fancy doing some sightseeing around Madikeri town, Raja's Seat is the most popular tourist attraction there. This garden spot was apparently a favorite of the Kings of Kodagu. The best thing about Raja's Seat is that it offers superb sunsets and panoramic views across the valley, all the way to Kerala. However, if you want peace and quiet, it's best to go in the morning. People flock there in the evenings. Madikeri also has an old fort and palace. Most of the palace has been turned into government offices though. Coorg or Kodagu is a small district headquartered in Madikeri. 80% of the tourist destination falls in Madikeri while 20% in Kushalnagar. We were  Couchsurfing  in Kushalnagar, so on the first day, we planned to see some places around there.

Let’s show you the gorgeous places to visit in Coorg, one by one:

1. Namdroling Monastery, Bylakuppe

Bayalakuppe is also called Tibet of South India. The main settlements of Tibetans are in Dharamshala in North India and Byalakuppe in South India. Buddhist followers from different parts of the country come here to receive religious education.

The peaceful and spiritual atmosphere here served as a lifeline for the beginning of our journey. This will be a perfect place among all the places to visit in Coorg to start your expedition.

We first entered the main temple, where the magnificent statue of Lord Buddha was decorated. After seeing it, we sat there for some time. Peaceful like a forest lake, it is easy to get lost and contemplate that environment.

There is a small lake ahead of it at some point, which very few people visit. If you want some more time in solitude, head towards it.

2. Nisargadham

Nisargadham is a breathtaking island situated at a distance of 2 km from the city of Kushalnagar, which is spread over an area of ​​64 acres.

Established as a tourist destination in 1989 by the Forest Department, the picturesque picnic spot is adorned with dense bamboo trees and sandalwood sandstone with beautiful bamboo tree clumps.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that Nisargadham is truly a paradise for all nature lovers. In fact, Nisargadham is one of the ideal places to visit in Coorg for tourists who want to spend a few moments in peace in the lap of nature.

The natural beauty of Nisargadham makes it one of the most beautiful places in Coorg. It is a famous picnic spot, not only for locals but also for travelers who visit Coorg from all over the country.

You can access Nisargadham island via a hanging rope bridge. A herd of animals, including deer, rabbits, and peacocks, live here in ancient surroundings. Apart from this, the place also has a small snack house and a deer park.

You can venture into some shallow and safe places along the river. Further, you can also enjoy elephant rides and boating here.

Nisargadhama also has a forest guest house and treetop bamboo cottages. Also, if you’re a chocolate lover, you will find many shops where you can savor organic chocolates.

3. Abbey Waterfall

The distance from Madikeri to Abbey Waterfall is 8 km.

The waterfall is surrounded by beautiful gardens of coffee. You have to descend long stairs to reach the waterfall. But after that, the natural panorama you see removes all your fatigue.

Abbey Waterfall, formerly Jessie Waterfall, is named after the wife of an English officer and was later named Abbey.

4. Kings Tomb

The Tomb of the Kings is a historical monument built in the Indo-Scenic style and sits at the edge of a mountainous region. It is approximately 1 km from the city center.

There are two main mausoleums on the right. On the right is Lingarajendra, built by Chikkavirajendra in A.D. 1820, and to the left of the tomb of Rudrappa (royal priest), built in 1834. Moreover, there’s a tomb in the center; the tomb is that of Dodda Veerarajendra and his queen.

5. Madikeri Fort and Museum

The Madikeri Fort is located just 700-800 meters from the bus stop. The Madikeri Fort is not very grand, but it describes the history of that time. Now, this building is used for government offices.

Right in front of it is a museum where you will glimpse Kodava culture. Everything found in the excavation is stored here.

6. Raja’s Seat

Raja’s Seat is a fantastic place where you can see mountain ranges, sunrise, sunset, and coffee plantations at a height.

It has been given the form of a park to spend time with children and family. It is said that the king used to come with their queens to watch the sunset.

If you’re a naturalist, this is definitely one of the most exciting places to visit in Coorg for you.

7. Omkareshwar Temple

The Omkareshwar temple is in Madikeri and was built in 1820 as a penance by King Lingarajendra II.

The temple follows the Muhammadan style of architecture, with a dome. Further, its four corners are surrounded by four bastions.

A linga is installed near the entrance of the temple. Another attractive architectural feature of the temple and in front is a small pond, which has a variety of fish.

• Mandalpatti Jeep Safari:  Mandalapatti is located 25 km from Madikeri, where you have to go through the thick forests of Pushpagiri. Its beauty is doubled during the rainy season by freshly bathed grass and wildflowers swinging with the breeze.
• Dubare Elephant Camp:  Here you can see bathing and playing elephants. If you want, you can also ask to bathe elephants under the guidance of experts.
• Talakaveri : It is 40 km from Coorg. This is the place where the river Kaveri originates. The Kaveri is one of the sacred rivers of the Sapta Indus rivers.

Coorg is as famous in terms of travel as it is in terms of food. Apart from this, there are many options for traditional Karnataki food in Coorg.

There are long queues for food at Madikeri’s ‘Coorgi’ restaurant. You will get the token number. You will get a seat when your number comes. Coorg Cuisine, Udupi Garden, Raintree Restaurant, taste of Coorg, Ambika Uphaar, etc., are some places where you can eat food.

Spices like cloves, cardamom, black pepper are also sure to be taken home. Homemade wine is also famous here. You can take coffee and chocolate back at your home as a souvenir.

3. Experience Glimpses of Kodava Caste and Culture

The people here belong to a tribal tribe called Kodava. They are related to Mohenjodaro, the city of Indus Valley Civilization. The Skanda Purana describes the Kodava as the descendant of the Chandravanshi kings, who were the worshipers of Parvati and the protector of the birthplace of the river Kaveri.

The city was settled in the 8th century. The rulers of the Ganges were the first to rule here. Later it was ruled by the kings of Pandava, Chola, Kadamba and Chalukya dynasty. Even today you will get to see a glimpse of Kodava culture here.

The nearest international airport is Mangalore International Airport, which is located at a distance of just 140 kms from the city of Coorg. For domestic flights, the nearest airport is Mysore, which is 120 km away. However, the most well-connected airport is Bangalore International Airport, which is 286 kms away.

Although this place attracts tourists throughout the year, but visiting during the rainy season (June to September) is recommended . Lush greenery surrounds the city and weather becomes beautiful.

The Namdroling Monastery was established in the year 1963 by Pema Nobu Rinpoche, and is today renowned for their true preservation of the teachings of Buddha.

When you stand before this white-walled monastery surrounded by the rich green hills, all you feel is serenity. In fact, just looking at the green lawns on either side of the main building fills you with a sense of peace. Rich Tibetan paintings adorn the walls of the monastery, all depicting a Buddhist myth. The spacious prayer hall is lined with prayer desks where you might even catch a monk meditating in front of the golden statues of Buddhist saints and a 60 feet tall statue of Buddha himself.

Madikeri Fort

Built in the 17th century by Muddu Raja, the founder of Coorg, Madikeri Fort is the embodiment of the bygone days, where every brick and stone whisper stories of valiant kings and long, bloody battles. The Madikeri Fort has seen kings come and go; have been claimed and reclaimed, yet it stood the test of time and will continue to do so for centuries to come.

Originally made out of mud, the granite of the Madikeri Fort that we see today, was constructed when Tipu Sultan captured it. However, the Kodagu rulers reclaimed the fort and added more oriental features to its construction later on, showcasing an interesting blend of European and Indian style of architecture. Under the British rule, the fort underwent yet another change in the form of St. Mark's Church, which was built in the place of the demolished Vidarbha temple. Abbey falls.

It is believed that Lakshman's arrow pierced the Brahmagiri hills, cracking it open, and giving rise to the clean stream now known as the Lakhsmana Tirtha. Brahmagiri wildlife sanctuary.

Established in 1974, this sanctuary is home to a wide array of flora and fauna. Omkareshwar Temple

Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary

It is incredibly amazing to know that Karnataka boasts of 21 wildlife sanctuaries and Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary is one of them that adds more greenery to the state’s sizeable vegetation.  Sprawled across an area of 102 KM, this wildlife sanctuary is world famous for its sustainable approach to endangered bird species. It is almost  290 KM from Bangalore and is situated in the Somwarpet taluk district in Coorg.  Many small streams chisel down the steep terrain of the sanctuary which is caved by Bisle Reserve Forest on one side and Kukke Subramanya Forest range on the other. Best way to travel from Bangalore to Coorg?

The most efficient and affordable way to travel from Bangalore to Coorg is by an overnight sleeper bus. The journey takes roughly 6 hours. That way you not only save money but also time by using your sleeping hours for reaching your destination.

However, if you have trouble sleeping in a moving vehicle or enjoy the road, you can hire a car or a cab as per your preference. It’ll take the same 6 hours to reach Coorg from Bangalore but you’ll also be spending a big part of your day just to reach your destination.

The nearest domestic airport to Coorg is Mysore which around 3-4 hours away. However, the flight frequency is low and it’ll be a lot more economical to fly to Bangalore and take a cab from there .

Are 3 days enough for Coorg?

We believe 3 days is more than enough to cover all the sights in Coorg without feeling rushed. You can visit all the sights in Coorg in 2 days as well; but then you will not have time for leisure which is quintessential to absorb the essence and flavor of Coorg.

Best time to visit Coorg?

The best time to visit Coorg is through the months of September to March. Our favourite month to visit Coorg is September as the entire landscape of Coorg is lush green because of the heavy rainfall in the months of July and August.

That said, if you wish to cover a lot of sights mentioned in this Coorg itinerary, you should avoid the months of July and August. Coorg receives heavy rainfall during this period and it’ll be pretty difficult to follow this 3-day itinerary during this time.

However, if you are visiting Coorg just to relax and rejuvenate, Coorg is magical during these months. You can live on a coffee plantation, sip some of the best coffee in India, read a book and enjoy a relaxing spa, all while looking at the rain outside, transforming Coorg’s landscape.

Things to Do in Coorg : Itinerary Day 1

Day 1 of your 3 day Coorg itinerary shall be spent in Madikeri and shall entail the following activities:

• Arrival in Coorg and Check In
• Marvel at the Majestic Abbey Falls
• Coffee Plantation Tour
• Enjoy the views at Raja’s Seat
• Visit Madikeri Fort

Arrival and check in

As stated above, reach Coorg by an overnight sleeper bus. You can pre-book a taxi with your hotel if it is located far away or catch an autorickshaw/tuk-tuk from the bus stand. There are no Uber or Ola services in Coorg. So be prepared to haggle as the taxis at the bus stand tend to overcharge.

For the sake of this itinerary, it is best to book a cab for three days or if you’re a self-initiator, rent a scooter or car. You can check the cost of renting a car on popular websites like Zoomcar and scooters are available for rent at a rate Rs. 500 per day.

Book your hotel or homestay in the Madikeri area to be central to all the locations in this itinerary. Check in to your hotel, freshen up and set out for our first location of the day.

Things to Do in Coorg : Visit the Majestic Abbey Falls

Abbey falls is one of the most picturesque locations in all of Coorg. With water falling from a height of 70 feet, it is a sight to behold. It is also one of the wider waterfalls that you’ll see in the area that gives a milky white appearance to the visitors. The entrance fee is merely Rs.15 and it involves light trekking on paved steps leading to this natural megalomania.

Visit the Abbey falls as early as possible to avoid crowds and to enjoy the serenity of the waterfall the in all its glory.

Things to Do in Coorg : Coffee Plantation Tour

Book a scenic coffee plantation tour and understand the entire lifecycle of coffee from bean to cup! Your guide shall take you on a trail and explain all the different types of coffee and spices that grow in his sprawling estate. Along with coffee you shall see cardamom, green pepper, vanilla bean, fig trees, passionfruit and sweet lime trees in the estate.

Things to Do in Coorg : Madikeri Fort

Built in the early 17 th by king Mudduraj, the Madikeri fort is a peak into history of various dynasties that ruled the region. A unique thing about this fort is that it houses a temple, a church, a prison and museum! Different rulers have used and refurbished the fort for their purpose, making it an intriguing amalgamation of cultures.

The fort is located between lush greenery and rolling hills, making the journey to the fort as beautiful as the destination. Currently, the office of deputy commissioner of Madikeri is located within the fort premises. You can book a heritage tour of Coorg like this one to visit the Madikeri fort.

Things to Do in Coorg : Electric Bike tour

One of our favourite activities to do in Coorg was this electric bike tour . The tour lasts for 3 hours and takes you through the coffee and tea estates. You shall join a small group, make new friends and enjoy a leisurely ride through backwaters, sunrise points and spice plantations.

Age and fitness shall not be an issue for this activity as the electric bike will make it a lot easier to traverse the beautiful Coorg landscape. You shall be provided safety gears, refreshments and the services of a trained tour captain. This is a must do activity in Coorg.

Things to Do in Coorg : Visit Raja’s Seat

Perched at an elevation of 1525 metres, Raja’s seat is the best place to witness the famous Coorg Sunset. The place is called Raja’s seat because the king of Coorg use to spend hours here enjoying the beautiful vistas from the mountaintop.

Today, there is a sprawling garden here complete with animal sculptures and a viewing deck with beautiful benches lined across the paved cliff. A very nominal entrance fee of Rs. 10 is charged at the entrance.

Things to Do in Coorg : Itinerary Day 2

On Day 2 of our 3-day Coorg itinerary, we head over to the scenic area of Kushalnagar. It shall entail the following activities:

• The Bamboo Forest of Nisargdham
• Dubare Elephant Camp
• River Rafting
• Tibetan Monastery

Things to Do in Coorg : Nisargadhama Forest

Have you ever seen a picture of the Arashiyama Bamboo forest in Kyoto, Japan? Well, Nisargadham is something similar to that. While the bamboo trees aren’t as tall, the forest is pretty dense and makes for a good picnic spot.

Nisargadhama is infact an island in the Kaveri river and is connected to the mainland by a suspended bridge. The forest also has a flock of deer roaming around on the other side of fence and sculptures that depict the life of the tribals who used to live nearby. Definitely one of the unique things to do in Coorg.

Things to Do in Coorg : Dubare elephant camp

The Dubare Elephant camp is a fun activity, esp. if you’re visiting with kids. You shall be taken to the camp on the other side of the river by a ferry.

Here, you can witness the elephants as they play, eat and bathe!

A lot of these elephants have been brought to the camp for treatment of diseases or are rescued from poachers. The nominal entrance fee of Rs. 80 goes towards the maintenance and upkeep of the camp.

The camp is open from 9:30 AM to 1 PM in the morning and from 4 PM to 6 PM in the evening so plan accordingly.

Things to Do in Coorg : Kaveri River Rafting

Right next to the ferry pick up point, you will see people gearing up for a river rafting experience on the Kaveri river.

This is a government run river rafting program to promote adventure tourism costs as little as Rs. 600.

However, Kaveri is a relatively calm river and you shall not encounter any major rapids. River rafting here is not as adventurous as the one in Rishikesh, but it is pretty exciting.

Things to Do in Coorg : Visit Namdroling Nyingmapa Monastery

After visiting beautiful monasteries in Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh, we weren’t very excited when our driver told us to visit Namdroling Monastery.

Once inside, we knew that it was nothing short of spectacular!

The monastery walls are beautifully adorned with intricate murals and the temple tower is an exquisite example of Tibetan architecture.

But the biggest spectacle is the set of three 40-feet high golden statues of Tibetan gods – Guru

Padmasambhava, Buddha Sakyamuni and Amityaus. This is probably why; this Monastery in Coorg is also referred to as the Golden Temple.

The peace and tranquillity emanating from the temples are amplified by the well-manicured gardens surrounding it.

Shopping in Coorg

Coorg is a beautiful, tropical rain-forest famous a lot of agri-based and forest-based products. Coffee, spices and home-made wines are some of the best Coorg souvenirs you can take back home. Things to Do in Coorg : Itinerary Day 3

The last day of your 3-day Coorg itinerary involves a visit to the southern part of Coorg. We recommend booking a cab so that you can sit back and enjoy this scenic journey. Also, today’s attractions are located pretty far away and you shall be exhausted by the end of the day.

You shall be visiting the following places on Day 3 of your Coorg itinerary:

• Iruppu Falls
• Brahmagiri Peak
• Safari in Nagarhole national Park

Things to Do in Coorg : Iruppu falls in Coorg

Located in the middle of Brahmagiri forest reserve, Iruppu falls in another great gem of a waterfall in Coorg. The waterfall has three layers and is quite a steep hike. The higher you hike, the better the rewards.

You shall need to pay an entrance fee of Rs. 50 to enter the Brahmagiri forest reserve (Rs. 25) and the Waterfall (Rs. 25). The initial path up to 40% are concrete steps while the rest is a combination of moss-covered rocks, an unpaved mud path and vegetation. There is provision for bathing in the waterfall on the thierd tier of the waterfall.

There is not restaurant around the waterfall as it is in the middle of the Brahmagiri National Park. So, pack a picnic basket or some snacks and water to keep you full till you reach a decent restaurant.

Things to Do in Coorg : Safari in Nagarahole National Park

Nagarahole National Park, also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park, is a dense tropical forest that comes under Project Tiger and Project Elephant. So naturally, there are high chances (but no guarantees) of spotting an Asiatic Elephant and a Bengal Tiger in these forests.

The Nagarahole National Park safari also gives you a chance to spot Leopards, Wild dogs, Bears, Sambar deer, spotted deer, antelope and many other species of birds.

Nagarahole Safari timings are from 6 AM to 9 AM in the morning and  3 PM to 6 PM in the evening in two 1.5 hour slots. Since you won’t be able to make the morning safari, it’s advisable to book the evening safari in advance. Individual safari cost for Nagarhole National Park is Rs. 250 per person for Indians and Rs. 500 for non-Indians. After your safari, return to your hotel, collect your luggage and catch your over night sleeper bus from Coorg to Bangalore.

1. Tibetan Monastery/Golden Temple

Among the best places to visit in Coorg is the Golden Temple or Namdroling Monastery settled in Bylakuppe. It’s a beautiful Buddhist Monastery that serves as a spiritual attraction for tourists and provides a home to more than 5000 monks and nuns.

Perched 34 km away from the center of Coorg, the Namdroling Monastery is considered as the largest teaching center for Buddhists. The prime highlight includes the Lord Buddha statue in the center with the idols of Lord Padmasambhava and Lord Amitayus on either side.

You will be mesmerized to see the Tibetan architecture along with outdoor walls that are decorated with colorful murals. There are also some paintings adorning the walls of this monastery to make it look even more stunning. All these paintings represent gods and demons from Tibetan Buddhist mythology.
