In its report on third-quarter tourism performance for the six-month period ending September 30, 2022, the Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA] noted “signs of sustained recovery.”
A spokesperson said, “Traditional air arrivals from the US and Canada lagged while tourism measures saw increase over 2021, including growth from the UK. The total number of leisure air arrivals year-to-date (YTD) is 79,745, which represents a YTD increase of 76.1% over 2021 figures. Particularly, recreational travel from the UK has recovered much more quickly than from our other main markets (the US and Canada), with a decrease of just 27.6% from 2018 to 2019. The aircraft carrier’s decision to restart seven-day-per-week service between Heathrow and Bermuda in March 2023 was probably motivated by the rise in UK tourism.
“Marine tourism, which includes superyachts, excursions, and yachts, has done well so far this year. Cruise transport added 176,650 passengers in the third quarter, bringing the year-to-date tally to 302,777, 32.3% below the number of passengers in 2019. In the third quarter, there were 40 yacht inquiries, which is 11% less than in 2019. 686 yacht trips have been made so far this year, 9.6% fewer than in 2019. Since the year’s beginning, the superyacht category has received 80 calls, surpassing the 2020 numbers (superyacht data began to be measured in 2020) by 128.6%. Superyacht growth has also increased the year-to-date economic effect to $2.9 million, or a 104.7% increase over 2020.
“Bermuda’s tourist profile has undergone some changes, with the number of boomers returning approaching 2019 levels while the rate of younger visitors returning has been less brisk. Business travelers, a segment that had previously been sluggish to recover, increased to 5,444 this quarter, which is still 43% below the level of 2019. The number of air travelers who traveled for the purpose of visiting friends and family increased to 6,370, pushing the dial up 68.7% over 2021 and bringing it to a value that is 29.7% lower than in 2019.
Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory located in the North Atlantic Ocean, approximately 570 miles east of North Carolina in the United States. The island has a total area of 20.6 square miles and a population of approximately 63,000 people. Here are some of the most important things to know about Bermuda.
Bermuda was discovered by Spanish navigator Juan de Bermudez in 1503, but it was not settled until 1612, when the English ship “Sea Venture” was wrecked off its coast. The survivors went on to establish the first permanent settlement on the island. Bermuda later became a British colony and has remained a British Overseas Territory since 1684.
Bermuda is made up of approximately 138 islands, islets, and rocks, with the largest being the main island. The terrain is hilly, and there are no rivers or freshwater lakes on the island. The climate is subtropical, with mild winters and warm summers. Bermuda is located in the Atlantic hurricane belt and is susceptible to hurricanes between June and November.
Bermuda has a thriving economy based on international business and tourism. The island is a leading offshore financial center, and many multinational companies have their headquarters in Bermuda due to its favorable tax policies. Tourism is also an important sector, with visitors attracted to Bermuda’s pink sand beaches, clear waters, and historic attractions.
Bermuda has a unique culture that is influenced by its history and geography. The island is known for its colorful houses, which are painted in pastel hues. The cuisine is a blend of African, Native American, Spanish, and Portuguese influences, and features seafood, fish, and local produce. Music is an important part of Bermudian culture, with a blend of African and European styles.
Transportation
Bermuda’s transportation network is limited due to its small size. Cars are not available for rent to tourists, and the only way to get around is by taxi, bus, or scooter. The island has an extensive bus network that serves all major tourist destinations, and taxis are widely available. Scooters are a popular way to explore the island, but visitors are advised to drive carefully due to the narrow roads and heavy traffic.
Attractions
Bermuda is known for its pink sand beaches, clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs, which are popular with snorkelers and scuba divers. The island also has a rich history, with many historic attractions such as St. George’s Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other popular attractions include the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo, the Crystal Caves, and the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.
Bermuda is a unique and beautiful destination that offers a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. The island’s economy is based on international business and tourism, and it has a thriving financial sector. Visitors are attracted to Bermuda’s pink sand beaches, clear waters, and historic attractions, making it a popular destination for travelers from around the world.

11 Things To Know Before Visiting Bermuda + Bermuda Travel Tips

Visiting Bermuda soon? Check out 11 things you should know before traveling to the island + some useful Bermuda travel tips.
Bermuda is a beautiful island that is full of hidden surprises. However, there are quite a few misconceptions about the island, and unlike more popular travel destinations, there are things that not many people know about it. But there are definitely things you should know before visiting Bermuda!
So if you’re thinking of visiting Bermuda, or you’ve been thinking where to go on your next vacation, read through these helpful Bermuda travel tips + where to stay in Bermuda tips.
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING BERMUDA
1| bermuda is not in the caribbean.
This is one of the most popular misconceptions about Bermuda. Although it resembles a Caribbean island in many ways, Bermuda is actually in the North Atlantic. While this doesn’t actually make much difference to enjoying the island, it does make a difference on how you get there. If you are from the East Coast, Bermuda might be closer than you think!
2| It’s very close to the East Coast of the US
On that note, Bermuda is located very close to the East Coast of America, and this is where you’ll likely fly from to get to Bermuda. Flights to US cities such as New York and Boston take just over two hours, although you can make connections to almost any East Coast city.
On the other hand, if you don’t feel like flying, a more enjoyable way to reach the island is by combining Bermuda and New England on a cruise. Discover Celebrity’s Bermuda Cruise and imagine being able to visit the idyllic island of Bermuda for a few days followed by dreamy towns in Maine, the young city of Boston, and finish your trip in New York City.
3| Bermuda boasts some beautiful beaches
One of the main reasons Bermuda gets mistaken for a Caribbean island is the quality of the beaches. You can expect crystal clear water, beautiful sand, and plenty of sunbathers, similar to those you would find in Turks and Caicos or other Caribbean islands. Keep in mind though that the island is in the Atlantic: during the summer the water is warm, but can dip to much cooler temperatures in the winter.
Some of the most beautiful beaches are Jobson’s Cove, Tobacco Bay beaches, and, of course, the pink beaches… keep reading!! West Whale Beach is also great, however because of the low tide this is accessible only a few hours a day. Humpback whales pass here in April, but most of the time they will be too far to actually see them!
4| You can’t rent a car on the island
Car rental is banned by the Bermudian government. The main reason for this is because the island is quite small (21 square miles) and has a small population of 65,000. However, the island expects around 600,000 tourists a year, and if they all rented cars the infrastructure wouldn’t be able to cope.
So what are your options? You can rent scooters and mopeds, as these are freely available and cheap to rent, or there is an emerging market of electric minicars too. Alternatively, there are places for renting bicycles if you prefer (and you can get some exercising done at the same time), or there are plenty of taxis available across the island.
5| You can swim in grottos
There are many grottos and cave systems on the coast of Bermuda, and all of them are beautiful. And to make things even better, you’re allowed to swim in them! There are plenty of companies that arrange swimming tours of the bigger cave systems, and this is usually the best way to experience them as you can take advantage of local knowledge.
Prospero’s & Cathedral Caves are located on the grounds of Grotto Bay Beach Resort, and are definitely worth a visit.
6| You should get travel insurance before flying out
Everyone traveling to Bermuda should think twice before flying out to the island without travel medical insurance. Medical cost in Bermuda appears to be the second highest in the world, often even higher than in the US! Most, if not all, American and British medical insurance companies won’t cover you if something happens to you while on the island, so you really need to think ahead before traveling.
7| The historic Town of St. George is super instagrammable
The Town of St. George was the first settlement established on the island and is steeped in local history. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for this very reason. There are so many beautiful buildings to see, many of which are very colorful and make for those perfect Instagram shots.
Make sure you visit King’s Square, which is in the center of town and a good place to start any tours. There are companies that provide walking and minibus tours, although it’s perfectly possible to guide yourself around the town if you prefer.
8 | It’s quite expensive
This is an important thing to consider when thinking about visiting Bermuda. Many people who have emigrated to the island don’t bother cooking at home because it’s just as expensive as eating out. The main reason for this is because the island is so small the vast majority of things are imported from other countries, which adds to the price massively.
9| Yes, it’s true. There are pink sand beaches!!
Do I have to say it again? PINK BEACHES! Bermuda is famous for its pink sand beaches , and they make ideal photo opportunities, particularly at sunset. The sand is made from tiny invertebrates that live on the coral reefs along Bermuda’s coastline.
I’m sure you’ve seen photos of Horseshoe Bay Beach before. Ranked by Conde Nast one of the top 20 beaches in the world, there is no way you can miss this unreal pink beach when visiting Bermuda!
10| Watch out for jellyfish
Bermuda is a known home of the Portuguese man o’war, a poisonous kind of jellyfish. Now, I don’t want to scare you. This jellyfish only appears occasionally, usually after storms, and shouldn’t deter you from visiting the island.
The beaches will have warning signs up if the jellyfish are seen there regularly, but it pays to keep an eye out anyway. Ask locals or your hotel if there have been any recent sightings at the beach before you go swimming on some lesser known beaches.
11| Bermudians speak English!
Hey, it will be easy to communicate with the locals! Bermuda’s national language is Bermudian English, which is a mix of American, British, and West Indian English. Some locals also speak Portuguese, but you won’t have any language problems.
WHERE TO STAY IN BERMUDA: BEST HOTELS IN BERMUDA
As I was telling you earlier, Bermuda is not a cheap destination. I usually recommend luxury, middle-range, and budget options, but in this case I had to add a super luxury category as middle range is already expensive.

Have you heard of The Reefs? Is that considered a nice hotel? Under what category would you put it under?
Tuesday 24th of August 2021
Hi Mira! I don't personally know it, but the reviews are really good and it's been featured by Conde Nast. I would consider it a mid-range / boutique hotel. The prices are high for a boutique hotel, but this is Bermuda!

You can drink the tap water. I am a naive of Bermuda and it is safe to drink. Please verify your information before passing it on to others. Secondly it is cheaper to cook at home you just have to know how. It is a regular process for natives and eating out is a treat.

@Steph, I'm another native from Bermuda, In Bermuda we have no natural water source because we are an isolated small island and most of the underground water supply is brackish because the island is mainly on a limestone foundation which is a very permeable rock, so instead we collect our water from the sky (rain-water). This is why are roofs are white and slanted in all directions to catch the water and store it in tanks underneath our homes. Most of the population drinks tap water from their tanks as it comes straight from the sky and any water that is being drank and isn't from one of our Bermuda rain water catchment systems, is imported. We use the brackish ground water for our toilets and similar things.... my entire life living hear I have never heard of anyone getting sick we've been doing it for 400 years now!

@TB, YES indeed very glad you set the record straight I have family in Bermuda I'm looking forward to attending Cup match this year it's been a long time since I've been on the island I'm so excited

Thanks for your comment! When this article was first written in 2018, the CDC had issued a warning against drinking tap water. When that happens, it would be irresponsible of me to to tell people the water is safe to drink, because then somebody could get sick and it would be my fault. However, I have just checked and now the CDC only has a warning for "travelers visiting rural or remote areas that are served by unregulated water sources such as private wells", so I will edit the article-

You can drink the water in Bermuda, it in fact is clean. The people are called Bermudians not Bermudans. Also Whale Bay is only a beach during low tide so it’s a few hours a day that it is accessible, and you really can’t see whales from the beach as they are farther out.
Monday 7th of September 2020
Hi Jenn! Regarding the water while I agree that it is going to be safe to drink most of the times, the CDC in the US has warned not to, and I wouldn't be doing a good job if I recommended it and someone got sick: http://www.royalgazette.com/environment/article/20180315/us-issues-tap-water-warning For the name, from wat I've read both etimologies are correct: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Bermudan but I've just changed it. Thank you for letting me know about the Whale Bay, I inserted this info in the post just now!

1. We Have a Glow in the Dark Worm...When It Gets Hot
The Bermuda fireworm is already a remarkable creature during the day. It’s about 4cm long, red and covered in little bristles that sting if you touch them.
In the summer months, between May and November on the third night after the full moon and 56 minutes after the sunset (yes, it really is that exact), the worms go crazy. Females start swimming up from the sea bed, usually in a protected bay, releasing a luminescent slime to attract males. Neon circles on the bodies of the males pulse with passion and they are ready to mate.
If you want to see the ocean spark with green light, try Ferry Reach Park.
2. It’s the Shipwreck Capital of the World
Bermuda’s extensive coastal reef and the occasional big storm are the perfect conditions for shipwrecks. To date, over 300 wrecks have been found dating back to the 1600s.
As the wrecks aren’t in especially deep water, it’s possible to see them when you’re snorkeling. You’ll get to see the Cristobal Colon, a 499 foot Spanish Luxury Liner that sank in 1936, the Constellation, the Montana and many more sitting on the ocean floor.
3. Sailors Once Thought There Were Demons Here
Spanish and Portuguese sailors didn’t fancy their chances against the treacherous reefs, but they were equally frightened of the strange sounds that emanated from the islands as dusk fell.
It’s claimed that the noises sounded like hundreds of babies screaming out in unison and the superstitious sailors jumped to the conclusion that demons, sea monsters and witches haunted Bermuda.
The howling noises were actually from cahows - an endemic species of seabird - making those noises in the hope they’d attract other birds to breed.
4. Birds Have Been Brought Back From the Brink of Extinction
Speaking of those demon-like cahows, they were thought to have been extinct as a breeding species for 330 years. In 1951, however, a scientific expedition went to the islets around Castle Harbor where seven burrows were found.
A schoolboy named David Wingate was one of the expedition members and after completing his degree, he went on to save the species. He created a sanctuary for the birds on Nonsuch Island, working tirelessly to protect the cahows for five decades. Now there are over 100 birds remaining.
5. You’re Only Ever a Mile Away From the Ocean
Bermuda is actually an archipelago made up of seven main islands and a multitude of smaller islets with an average width of one mile. It’s only 25 miles long and is two miles wide at its widest point.
No more than a one-mile walk will bring you within toe-dipping distance of the deep blue sea that you’ll be so tempted to dive right into.

6. John Lennon Completed More Than 20 Songs in Bermuda
John Lennon had a real connection with Bermuda, crediting both his ocean crossing and the time he spent in Bermuda with revitalising his creative energies. The former Beatle - who hadn’t released an album of original material since Walls and Bridges in 1974 - ended up completing more than 20 songs while in Bermuda.
Lennon sailed to Bermuda from Rhode Island aboard the 43-foot yacht, ‘Megan Jaye,’ before renting a house in Fairylands for several weeks.
7. At One Stage, There Were Only Three People on the Island
There were no native people on Bermuda, so the Sea Venture’s wreckage marked the beginning of human colonization. However, most of the settlers didn’t fancy sticking around and left as soon as they managed to cobble some new ships together.
Only three people stayed behind in what we now know as Bermuda while the others left. That was until 1612 when a ship called the Plough arrived with the intention of settling here.
8. New Year’s Is Celebrated With an Onion
Bermuda used to export a lot of onions and we were famous for growing some of the best in the world. They were so popular, the US growers got wise and planted their own onions, branding them as ‘Bermuda onions’ and sold them.
The legend of the onion still lives on in Bermuda at New Year’s. Upon the stroke of midnight, a giant onion that’s fully decked out in Christmas lights is dropped from the Town Hall in St. George’s Town Square.
9. Bermuda Has Inspired William Shakespeare
The Sea Venture shipwreck was big news in England. That wreckage somehow inspired William Shakespeare to write a play set on the remote island. The original plan for The Tempest was that it was going to be set in the Mediterranean.
However, the island in the play happens to feature noisy birds and is populated by pigs. The play also mentions a drink made of cedar berries, sounding exactly like the beverage of choice for the early settlers of Bermuda.
10. Bermuda Is a Golfer’s Paradise
If you love a round of golf, then Bermuda will be your idea of heaven with championship golf courses wherever you turn. Bermuda actually has more golf courses per capita than any other country in the world - it’s no surprise why this activity is hugely popular here.
11. Believe It or Not, Bermuda Isn’t in the Caribbean
Perhaps the biggest misconception about Bermuda is that it’s part of the Caribbean and a stone’s throw away from Jamaica or even Cuba.
It’s actually much further northeast and is over 750 miles away from the Bahamas. In fact, Bermuda is actually closer to North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras than it is to the Bahamas!
This is just scratching the surface, there’s still so much to see and do in Bermuda that we can’t possibly list everything here.
