Barcelona is taking part in another US tour this upcoming summer, and tickets are now available for the club’s three-game slate. The Spanish side will be under new management when Xavi steps down at the end of the season. Therefore, the friendlies in the United States will be one of the first times supporters will have the chance to see the new boss. In addition to spectating Barcelona’s promising crop of young stars, the opposition will draw crowds for each of the games.

Barcelona is playing several familiar opponents across its three games in late July and early August. For example, Barcelona will play Manchester City, with the two intertwined in recent transfer windows. Plus, City manager Pep Guardiola has a lengthy history with the club. Also, Barcelona is playing Christian Pulisic and AC Milan in Baltimore. However, the marquee game yet again in Barcelona’s trip to the United States is another edition of El Clasico. For the third year in a row, Barcelona will play Real Madrid in the United States.

In the last two years, Barcelona has spent most of the time out west. Frequent stops in Las Vegas, Texas and California have allowed fans on that side of the country to see Barcelona in action. For the summer of 2024, each of the three games on Barcelona’s schedule is in the east. Moreover, these are three new stadiums.

The first of which is Camping World Stadium, which has hosted friendlies in 2022 and 2023. Then, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, is the latest home for El Clasico. It joins the metro areas of Las Vegas, Dallas and Miami to have hosted this fixture. Finally, M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD, hosts its first friendly in two years. It is Barcelona’s first trip to both Camping World Stadium and M&T Bank Stadium. The Catalan club previously played at MetLife Stadium in 2017.

Other clubs playing friendlies in the United States

Just like Barcelona, each of the three teams the Catalans are playing has a schedule of games across the United States. For example, Manchester City is playing four games, while Milan and Real Madrid match Barcelona with three games. Most of these games are part of the Soccer Champions Tou r, a collection of club friendlies involving some of the top teams in Europe.

However, the action does not stop with these European giants. Fellow popular clubs Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal are playing friendlies in the United States. Aston Villa is joining the Premier League teams in playing games in the United States.

With so many teams coming Stateside this summer, it can be a maze to figure out when and where games are happening. The schedule of soccer friendlie s not only has that crucial information, but it also lays out where to buy tickets to each of the friendlies in the United States this summer.

FC Barcelona return to the United States for preseason tour

FC Barcelona return to the United States for preseason tour

The FC Barcelona men’s first team will repeat the last season’s destination and travel once again to the United States for their preseason tour, BARÇA ON TOUR: US 2023, in which they will play a total of four matches, all against European opposition. The first two games will be played in California; 22 July against Juventus in Santa Clara, San Francisco Bay Area, and on 26 July against Arsenal FC. The last two games will take place in Dallas Texas, for the clash with Real Madrid on 29 July and in Las Vegas where the tour will conclude with a game against AC Milan.

The US Summer Tour 2022 saw the Barça play on the East Coast with games in Miami and New York – as well as games in Las Vegas and Dallas – cities which hosted the majority of the Club’s institutional and social activities. This year the geographical emphasis has shifted to the West Coast where the majority of the Club’s activities will take place and where they will play three of their four scheduled games.

mini_3200x2000_web

The blaugranes’ debut on the tour will come on 22 July against Juventus in the Levis Stadium, Santa Clara in San Francisco, home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. It will be the third time that Barça have played at the venue which has room for 68,000 fans following matches against Manchester United in 2015 and AC Milan in 2018. The most recent encounter between Barça and Juventus came in a friendly last season on tour, the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

The other games in California will come against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side on 26 July in the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Los Angeles, a venue opened in 2020 with a capacity of 70,000 and the ground where the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams of the NFL play their home matches. The fixture between the two sides will be their first in seven seasons, the last meeting having come in the last sixteen of the UEFA Champions League in 2016 in which Barça won 2-0 in London and 3-1 at Spotify Camp Nou. The game will also be the first on American soil between the two clubs.

Another Clásico in Arlington, Texas

The summer tour this year will also include one of the most awaited matches for the fans, the Clásico, the third meeting between Barça and Real Madrid in the USA. He game will take place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas which has a capacity of 80,000 and is home to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. The venue is one that Barça have visited twice previously; in 2011 against Manchester United and in 2018 against AS Roma. In their two previous games against Real Madrid in the US, Barça have come out on top both times: winning 3-2 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami in 2017 and 1-0 at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in 2022.

The Allegiant Stadium, which holds 65,000 fans, will be the venue for the final game of the tour for Xavi Hernández’s men against AC Milan, the third game on the west coast. The two teams have met on two previous occasions on US soil with a 2-0 win for Barça in 2003 in Washington and a 1-0 win for the Italians in 2018 in Santa Clara.

These four games during BARÇA ON TOUR: US 2023 are part of the Soccer Champions Tour, a tournament put together by Sixth Street in collaboration with Legends and AEG, and in which, aside from Barça and their four opponents on the tour, Manchester United will also be participating.

The USA, a popular destination for blaugrana preseason

This summer’s tour will be the 14 th in FC Barcelona history to the USA (the first in 1937 was key in the Club’s survival), a country that has become a popular destination in recent years with tours taking place in 2011, 2015, 2017, 2018, the latter being a joint tour with the women’s team, as well as 2019 and 2022.

In fact, the North American market in a key priority for the globalisation and expansion the Barça brand. Football is undergoing a great period of growth in the USA that trend will hopefully continue with the next World Cup in 2026 taking place on North American soil. Furthermore, FC Barcelona opened a US office in New York in 2016 and continues its efforts to build a greater connection with its existing fans and win more followers and reach agreements with local sponsors to help develop even further the country’s footballing ecosystem.

FC Barcelona planning a tour to the United States

Raafay Humayun

Following the conclusion of the 2022/2023 football season in Spain, Mundo Deportivo reports that FC Barcelona are looking towards a proposed pre-season tour to the United States of America. Scheduled to take place in July of 2023, it would see Xavi’s men visit the country once again following their previous tour in the summer of 2022.

A major reasoning for the tour happens to be Barcelona’s economic situation. Finding a diverse plethora of revenue streams is currently a major objective for the Catalan giants, and tours such as the one being reported are a good avenue to increase their revenue generation.

Similar to the last time they traveled to the United States , FC Barcelona are expected to face the other two Super League advocates alongside them: Real Madrid and Juventus. Moreover, this time around, the Super League project seems like a much more approachable concept for teams that previously ended up opposing it, courtesy of the rulings in favor of the project made by legal authorities that frustrated UEFA and other domestic entities.

Furthermore, an expected favorable ruling by the Court of Luxembourg can also prove to be vital in making more and more clubs feel that the Super League project is actually an approachable outlet and may be reviewed.

However, Barcelona do intend on decreasing the length of their tour this time around in comparison to their 15-day period during their previous journey. Instead of taking part in 4 different games, it is rumored to be a 3-game tour during this visit.

The venues for this tour will reportedly be previously visited New York City, potentially the SoFi stadium in Los Angeles, and a third venue located somewhere North of the country this time around.

Barcelona’s plans for the pre-season tour of the USA – report

barcelona tour of usa

It is no secret that Barcelona are ready to embark on yet another pre-season tour to the United States this summer, the third time in as many years.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta hinted as much during the presentation event with a new collaboration with automotive brand Cupra.

While Barça are yet to release a final schedule of their pre-season tour to the US this summer, a recent report from Diario AS has highlighted many key insights into the club’s plans in the country.

Barcelona to travel to the East Side

After two back-to-back preseason campaigns in the United States, Barcelona are primarily planning to conduct a tour of the East Coast, this time around.

That would mean visits to cities such as Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Miami, Orlando and Atalanta, among others.

barcelona tour of usa

Barcelona will also have Cupra as the brand sponsor that will appear on the shirt, especially on the sleeves. Laporta already stressed the importance of bringing brand connectivity to the citizens of the US, who, as per the Barcelona president, love ‘speedy cars’.

Just like last year, Barça will establish a training camp in order to augment logistics and cut spending. It will also allow the players to receive proper relaxation.

A lot of aspects surrounding Barcelona’s US tour this summer will be decided by the new coach, particularly when it comes to the schedule and training regime the club will undertake.

For the technical and publicity aspect, the Barcelona board is already hard at work, trying to fix another El Clasico , which would bring in a revenue of around €10 million.

I moved from the US to Barcelona. Here are 11 things that surprised me most.

  • I traveled to Europe frequently while living in LA, so I decided to move abroad and settle in Spain .
  • Barcelona is beautiful, and I was surprised by some of the holiday traditions the city partakes in.
  • I also wasn't expecting some eating customs, like sandwiches for breakfast and 9 p.m. dinners.

Insider Today

After years of visiting Europe from LA, I took the plunge and relocated to Barcelona in 2020.

Spain is experiencing some of its highest tourism numbers in years, and after living here, I can see why it's so popular. But when I first moved, there were definitely a few experiences and cultural norms that took some getting used to.

Here's what surprised me the most when I moved from the US to Spain.

I knew Barcelona was in Spain, but the Catalonia region has its own language and culture.

barcelona tour of usa

Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, a northeastern region of Spain. When I first moved, I assumed Spanish would be the go-to language, but I was quite mistaken.

When you walk into any store or restaurant, the menus and signs are in Catalan. And although everyone speaks Spanish, it's still good to know a few Catalan words and phrases to be polite and respect the culture.

A few of my favorites are "adéu" ("goodbye"), "si us plau" ("please"), "molt bé" ("very well"), and "merci" ("thank you").

There are a few unique holiday traditions I had to learn when I moved.

barcelona tour of usa

There's no Valentine's Day here, but in late April, they have Sant Jordi — a celebration of love during which women are supposed to give a man a book in exchange for a rose.

Many people also celebrate La Mona on the Monday after Easter. Traditionally, godparents give their godchildren an egg-shaped cake for the whole family to enjoy.

But my all-time favorite Catalonian traditions come at Christmas .

For the whole month of December, children leave food and water out for Caga Tió, which translates to pooping log. Then they hit the log with a stick on Christmas Eve, and Caga Tió "poops out" presents.

People take this tradition very seriously, the streets of Barcelona are decorated with this pooping log, and every store has one in its window.

In the same vein, caganers are another fascinating Christmas tradition in Catalonia. The little pooping figurine is placed in nativity scenes to represent fertilization and hope for the new year.

But now, there are caganer shops all over Barcelona year-round for tourists. Nearly every celebrity has been transformed into a caganer, from Freddy Mercury to SpongeBob SquarePants to President Joe Biden.

Tapas are genuinely a way of life here.

barcelona tour of usa

Tapas, small, shareable plates, are prevalent in restaurants across Barcelona .

I love this way of dining because you get a little taste of everything. I typically order between three and six tapas to share with a friend or two.

Some of the most popular tapas are the croquetas, like a breaded meatball; patatas bravas, cubed potatoes served with mayo and a tomato sauce; pimientos del pardón, small fried green peppers; and tortilla espanñola, a Spanish omelet prepared with egg and potato.

I learned all about calçots and the traditional way to eat them.

barcelona tour of usa

Calçots season typically runs from late winter into early spring, and it's quite the experience.

Eating calçots and experiencing the tradition behind them was a first for me. They're part of the onion family, similar to scallions, and they're grilled and served with a romesco sauce made from puréed tomato, garlic, and almonds.

Traditionally, you're given a bib and gloves to dive into the onion dish. The bib is simply to keep you from making a mess of yourself, and the gloves allow you to remove the outer layer of the onion before indulging.

Then you dip your calçot in the sauce, tilt your head back, and eat it in one big gulp.

Sandwiches for breakfast are the norm.

barcelona tour of usa

A typical Spanish breakfast is a bocadillo, a sandwich served on baguette-style bread.

The bread is first rubbed with fresh tomatoes, referred to as "pan con tomate," to get the perfect amount of flavor and texture. Then it's traditionally filled with ham, but sometimes there's also cheese or a potato omelet inside.

The affordable dish is usually served alongside a coffee in the morning.

I've found it surprisingly easy to have a balanced lifestyle here.

barcelona tour of usa

Barcelona is known for its nightlife, from great cocktail bars to decadent nightclubs that stay open until the wee hours of the morning. But it also offers more relaxed activities .

Because of the great weather nearly year-round, there are countless outdoor fitness and yoga classes in the parks and on the beaches. I've also seen plenty of volleyball and paddleboarding.

After a wild night of drinking and dancing, I can always balance it out with a long stroll on the beach and an afternoon yoga class.

There are mountains and beaches surrounding the city, and you could visit both in a single day.

barcelona tour of usa

The Collserola mountains cradle Barcelona from the west, and it only takes about 30 minutes to reach the foothills by public transportation.

From there, you can hike up to Tibidabo (a famous amusement park) or simply stroll through the trails.

After working up a sweat, you can easily cruise down to the sea and go for an afternoon swim.

Weekend trips are easily accessible and breathtaking.

barcelona tour of usa

Costa Brava, accessible primarily by car or bus, is a short ride from Barcelona.

The coast runs between Spain and France , and it's simply magical. I can't help but be hypnotized by the clear turquoise waters and sandy beaches.

In the summer, the beaches are lined with xiringuito, pop-up restaurants that serve tapas and sangria.

The coastline is also jam-packed with history. In the town of Tossa de Mar, you have to crawl through an old castle door to get to one of the beaches, and near Cadaqués you can visit the house where Salvador Dali lived.

Although Costa Brava can be expensive, there are ways to do it on a budget. Many campgrounds offer cheap cabins, and there are some affordable hotels.

The afternoon siesta is a real thing, and you have to plan accordingly.

barcelona tour of usa

Siestas, Spanish for naps, are truly a way of life here. If you're trying to run errands in Spain, be prepared to plan around afternoon and weekend closures.

Although larger retailers like Zara, H&M, and big supermarkets stay open during regular working hours, the smaller mom-and-pop shops close from about 2 to 4 p.m. every day.

This is time for employees to go home and rest, have lunch, or simply take a nap.

And everything, including the big shops, is closed on Sundays.

I've never eaten dinner so late.

barcelona tour of usa

In the US, I ate dinner around 7 p.m. every night — maybe 8 or 8:30 p.m. if I was working late.

But in Spain, I had to get used to a whole new dining schedule. Dinner is typically served around 9 or 10 p.m.

People really take their time to eat and socialize with whoever they're dining with, so by the time you've finished dessert, it could easily be midnight.

Gaudí architecture is everywhere, and it's beautiful.

barcelona tour of usa

Barcelona is full of history and beautiful architecture. Antoni Gaudí was a Catalan architect whose incredible and intricate designs can be seen all around the city .

I genuinely find myself walking in amazement on a daily basis — I can't believe I get to take in these incredible sights on my morning commute.

The Sagrada Familia church is arguably his most famous work.

Although Gaudí died in 1926, the project has yet to be finished. People are still working away, hoping to reach its scheduled completion date in 2026 .

The 17 best things to do in Barcelona in 2024

Here are Barcelona's unmissable experiences © Jordi Salas / Getty Images

Barcelona is Spain 's most visited city, and it's not hard to see why – the historic capital of Catalonia is packed with galleries, museums, attractions and an incredible food scene.

Set between the mountains and sea, the city is celebrated for its unique architecture , thriving nightlife and urban beaches . With so many options, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Start your travel to-do list now with our guide to the best things to do in Barcelona .

1. Visit the Sagrada Família

Almost every city has at least one landmark that you simply can’t miss, and the  Sagrada Família is Barcelona’s. Antoni Gaudí’s magnificent masterpiece has been under construction for more than 130 years, and it’s still not finished.

Far from a construction site, however, the church features two grand facades studded with intricate stone carvings, towers that gleam with gem-like tiles and an interior filled with tree-like columns soaring up toward the canopy ceiling. Construction work paused during the pandemic but has resumed and the building is expected to be completed in time for the 100th anniversary of Gaudí’s death in 2026.

Planning tip:  The Sagrada Família is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Spain, and it can get  very  busy. To avoid the crowds, visit early in the morning (it opens at 9am) on a weekday.

2. See more of Gaudí’s designs

The Sagrada Família may be the most famous of Gaudí’s buildings, but all his wonderful, whimsical designs are worth visiting. The most well known are  Casa Batlló , with its iridescent dragon-like scales and skull-and-bone-effect balconies, and  La Pedrera , with its undulating stone facade and fanciful chimneys. Some of his lesser-known but equally beautiful buildings include  Casa Vicens , the first house he ever designed;  Palau Güell , which he designed for his patron Eusebi Güell; and the  Torre Bellesguard .

3. Wander through the Gothic Quarter

Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter ( Barri Gòtic ) is the oldest and most atmospheric part of the city. Characterized by small alleyways, hidden plazas and historic buildings, it lies to the east of La Rambla, the famous pedestrian street that runs through the center of the old town.

The neighborhood is scattered with century-old shops, small bars and charming cafes. Some highlights include the striking Plaça Reial, fringed by cafes and palm trees; Plaça Sant Jaume, home to the grand Palau de la Generalitat; and the impressive  La Catedral .

Planning tip:  Many parts of the Gothic Quarter are known for late-night bars and clubs that are still going well into the morning. Perfect if you want to dance until dawn, but not the best neighborhood to stay in if you're traveling with young kids or those who appreciate an early night.

4. Explore Barcelona's food markets

La Boqueria might be the most famous of Barcelona’s food markets, but each neighborhood has its own, and there are several excellent ones to choose from. La Boqueria is the oldest and one of the most atmospheric, but in recent years, more stalls have given over to things such as tropical fruit shakes and novelty candy rather than traditional produce.

For a more authentic vibe, visit the modern  Mercat de Santa Caterina with its multicolored wavy roof or the grand  Mercat de Sant Antoni  with 250 stalls.

The coastline with Barcelona's beaches and a large hotel in the background

5. Soak up the sun on Barcelona's city beaches

Whatever time of year you visit Barcelona , the beaches won’t disappoint. Even in winter, it can be sunny enough to sit outside and enjoy a meal at one of the seaside restaurants, while summer offers everything from sunbathing and swimming to water sports.

The city boasts a 5km (3-mile) stretch of coastline, home to nine different beaches. There’s  Sant Sebastià with its range of upscale restaurants, Somorrostro lined with hip nightclubs and Nova Icària with a watersports center and beach volleyball.

6. Venture up Montjuïc

Montjuïc is the green hill to the south of the city, home to the Olympic Park, as well as numerous museums and gardens. Rising from Plaza d’Espanya, you'll first see the grand sets of stairs and fountains cascading down from the magnificent palace housing the  Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya . Behind that is the huge Olympic Stadium and the rest of the Olympic Park.

Planning tip:  The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya has a terrace that offers spectacular views of the city and is a popular spot to watch the sunset. The open-air bar means you can enjoy a few drinks while taking in the view.

Explore Montjuic effortlessly with  GetYourGuide . Book your tour today.

7. Snack on some tapas

When hunger pangs arrive in the afternoon or early evening, take advantage of the pre-dinner tapa. This means heading to the local favorite for a bite of anchovies, sausage, squid, wild mushrooms, roasted peppers or dozens of other tempting morsels. Wine, cava and beer all make fine accompaniments.

Planning tip: Many tapas spots are lively stand-around-the-bar affairs. When it's time for a change of scenery, barcelonins  make their way to dinner or just head to another tapas bar and skip the sit-down formality altogether.

8. Learn about an icon at the Museu Picasso

Picasso lived in Barcelona between the ages of 15 and 23, and elements of the city undoubtedly influenced his pieces, from the colorful but simply painted frescoes hanging in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya to the imaginative trencadís -style mosaics (pre-Cubist some say) of Gaudí. The Museu Picasso 's setting adds to the appeal, as do the buzzy, history-rich surrounding streets of El Born.

Explore Museu Picasso effortlessly with GetYourGuide.  Book your tour today .

9. Catch a game at Camp Nou

FC Barcelona plays a prominent role in the city's imagination. Heading to a football match at Camp Nou between September and May is the best way to catch a bit of Barcelona fever, but watching it on screen in a bar can be just as much fun, depending on the crowd.

Planning tip: Even if you can't make it to a game, the interactive Barça Stadium Tour and Museum experience takes you through the locker rooms and onto the field, hallowed ground for many Catalans.

Transform your visit to Camp Nou by  booking with GetYourGuide.

10. Experience Barcelona's famous nightlife

A night in Barcelona holds limitless possibilities. Start with sunset drinks on a rooftop terrace or sink your heels into the sand at a rustic-chic beachside xiringuito . As darkness falls, the city transforms with buzzing squares and live music, and around midnight the bars fill up.

Pick from old-school taverns, plush lounges in lamp-lit medieval chambers, sleek cocktail dens, boisterous cava bars, basements churning out brassy jazz and more. If you're still standing at 3am, hit the clubs and keep going until dawn.

Hundreds of people walk along La Rambla, the famous pedestrian street in Barcelona

11. Spend an early morning on La Rambla

Sure, the leafy 1.2km (0.75-mile) pedestrian boulevard of  La Rambla  that stretches toward the sea is the most touristed spot in town – at times, you can barely push through the crowds. But pay a visit first thing in the morning and you'll see that beyond the souvenir shops and craft sellers, it's a pure sensory overload.

Open-air cafes, fragrant flower stands and a much-overlooked mosaic by Miró dot the pavement, while key venues line both sides of the street, including the elegant Gran Teatre del Liceu , the sprawling Mercat de la Boqueria and numerous galleries. Several other barris , such as El Poblenou, have their own attractive rambles , too.

12. Enjoy Catalan cuisine

Barcelona is a great foodie city, known throughout the world for its innovative chefs and creative cuisine. While you’ll find tapas bars everywhere, be sure to sample some local Catalan dishes, too.

Before you dine, join in l’hora del vermut at a typical vermouth bar, which pairs the fortified wine with bites of pickled anchovies and olives to whet the appetite. Follow it up with traditional Catalan dishes, such as botifarra amb mongetes (sausage with white beans), suquet de peix (fish stew), escalivada (roasted red peppers, onions and eggplant) and crema catalana (similar to crème brûlée). Sample the cuisine at  Casa Delfín .

13. Celebrate during festival time

Because Barcelona has a festival almost every other month, it won’t be hard to make your trip to the city coincide with one. There are the patron-saint festivals of Santa Eulalia and La Mercé in February and September, respectively, La Diada de Sant Jordi in April (when people give each other gifts of books and roses to celebrate St George) and the fire festival of St Joan in mid-June.

Some of the main features of Catalan festivals include the castellers  (human towers), huge parading giants and correfocs , where firework-wielding devils dance through the streets.

14. See a range of works at Fundació Joan Miró

Joan Miró, the city’s best-known 20th-century native son, bequeathed this art foundation to his hometown in 1971. The light-filled buildings are crammed with seminal works, from Miró’s timid early sketches to paintings from his last years.

A balcony of the Palau de la Música Catalana, decorated with many multicolored mosaics on the bannisters and columns

15. Scope out examples of Modernista architecture

One of the things that makes Barcelona so charming is its Modernista architecture. An artistic movement that affected everything from literature and art to architecture, the Modernisme era lasted from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries.

You can identify these buildings by their bright colors, floral or botanical motifs, patterned tiles and curvy lines. Some of the best examples can be seen around the L'Eixample area, but you can also find them dotted all over the city. Besides Gaudí’s Modernista works, some of the best examples in the city are the  Palau de la Música Catalana and the  Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau , both designed by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

16. Explore up-and-coming El Poblenou

On the up is the formerly industrial neighborhood of El Poblenou, northeast of the center. Vacant warehouses are being reimagined as creative tech and design hubs, cafes, boutiques, bars and more.

17. Sip a drink at one of L'Eixample's rooftop bars

Admire Modernista marvels over a cocktail or vermouth. L'Eixample 's elegant streets conceal an array of hidden-away, view-laden open-air bars and cafes beloved by barcelonins , many of them within swish hotels but open to all.
