Mastering the ‘art of seduction’: behind the scenes of a young madonna’s ‘powers of persuasion’.

Madonna starred in the 1985 film "Desperately Seeking Susan."

When Madonna, then just barely famous, auditioned for the title role of 1985’s “Desperately Seeking Susan,” she made it clear to the film’s studio executive, Barbara Boyle, how badly she wanted the part.

“Madonna walked into Barbara’s office, fell on her knees, and said, ‘I’ll do anything to get this part,” the film’s director, Susan Seidelman, writes in her new memoir, “Desperately Seeking Something: A Memoir about Movies, Mothers, and Material Girls,” (St. Martin’s Press, out June 18).

“Barbara responded: ‘Sorry, I’m heterosexual.’ And Madonna replied: ‘How do you know unless you try?’”

Desperately Seeking Something

The role of Susan, the wild child foil to Rosanna Arquette’s buttoned-up housewife Roberta, was almost a fictionalized version of Madonna herself, then hitting the peak of her early popularity.

“Both Madonna and Susan used their powers of persuasion to get friends and lovers to do what they wanted,” Seidelman writes. “Both were charming con artists who didn’t let you know you were being conned. There was an art to seduction, and Madonna had mastered it.”

After Madonna was cast, she showed her mastery of this art throughout the film’s production, including while auditioning actors for the role of Susan’s punk musician boyfriend, Jim.

“Some of the auditions got pretty steamy,” Seidelman writes. “There was a dialogue scene that called for a kiss, and the next thing I knew the actors were down on the floor, making out. The casting directors and I watched with dropped jaws.”

During the eight-week shoot for “Desperately Seeking Susan,” Madonna jumped from aspiring singer to global sensation thanks to the impending release of her album “Like a Virgin,” and the film was a critical and commercial success.

But while Seidelman had a great experience working with the soon-to-be-superstar, she also understood the potential pitfalls of that relationship.

DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN, from left: Madonna, Patrick John Hurley, 1985.

Offered the chance to direct the star’s flop follow-up, 1986’s “Shanghai Surprise,” a film that found Madonna co-starring with then-husband Sean Penn, she wisely turned it down.

“Both had strong personalities,” writes Seidelman, who went on to help movies such as “She-Devil” and “Making Mr. Right”, “and as a newlywed power duo, they would probably make their director quiver.”

Justin timberlake’s ‘ruin the tour’ meme, explained.

Justin Timberlake’s recent arrest inspired a meme that echoes the reported conversation between Timberlake and the arresting officer, with social media commentators poking fun at the pop star.

The online mockery marks how Timberlake, once dubbed the “King of Pop,” has plummeted in the eyes of the public.

Why Was Justin Timberlake Arrested?

Justin Timberlake was reportedly arrested for driving while intoxicated on Tuesday, June 18. In a sign of the times, the police officer that arrested Timberlake was too young to recognize the pop star.

An anonymous source for Page Six claims that the two shared an exchange that sounds almost scripted, with Timberlake mumbling that his arrest was going to “ruin the tour.” The officer asked, “What tour?” Timberlake replied, “The world tour.”

Timberlake was referring to The Forget Tomorrow World Tour, which marks the pop star’s first world tour in five years; it was meant to be something of a comeback.

According to NBC News , Timberlake refused to take a chemical test, and the officer who stopped him claims the singer had “a strong smell of alcohol on his breath.”

Timberlake allegedly told officers that he consumed only one martini. Sources with knowledge of the night told The Daily Beast that the martini in question was a Vesper, which one insider described as “all alcohol” with “no mixer.”

Samsung Makes Surprise Free Offer For Galaxy S24 Ultra Buyers

One commentator compared Timberlake’s arrest to a scene from Netflix’s Bojack Horseman , an animated comedy about a once-beloved actor plagued by addiction issues and emotional dysfunction, his former fame proving a major obstacle to rehabilitation.

Timberlake’s Arrest Inspires Many Memes

Justin Timberlake’s bleary-eyed mugshot instantly sparked a meme on social media, with commentators using the image as shorthand for desperation and despair.

However, the bleakness of the “world tour” quote proved even more appealing, with commentators posting the now-iconic exchange into funny and dramatic movie scenes.

Others found a way to insert the quote into references and one-liners.

That’s really the extent of it — the meme remains something of a copy-and-paste joke, with little signs of mutation or evolution. Some commentators even found the meme to be overdone and annoying, stale from the moment it was cooked up.

However, it’s pretty telling that so much of the internet seems to take delight in Timberlake’s dramatic fall from grace.

Why Does The Internet Dislike Justin Timberlake?

In the early 2000’s, during the height of Timberlake’s fame, the singer’s break-up with Britney Spears turned into a messy public spectacle, with Timberlake using his “Cry Me A River” music video to imply that Spears had cheated on him.

The public shaming of Spears by media outlets and fans is well-documented at this point, but the release of Spears’ book, “The Woman in Me,” completely shifted the narrative.

In the book, Spears claimed that Timberlake was a serial cheater during their time together, and that he had pressured her to get an abortion after she became pregnant.

Timberlake has also been criticized for his role in “Nipplegate,” a publicity stunt during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show, in which he uncovered Janet Jackson’s breast. The stunt sparked a huge controversy and resulted in the public shaming of Jackson, whose career suffered heavily as a result.

Timberlake, on the other hand, suffered no consequences, and during the height of the backlash, the pop star never spoke up to defend Jackson.

In 2021, as criticism of Timberlake started to spread throughout the internet and beyond, the singer posted a vague apology to Jackson and Spears on Instagram, writing that he was “deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right.”

Hours after Timberlake’s recent arrest, eagle-eyed fans noticed that Britney Spears posted a picture of a cocktail on Instagram , a celebration of her vacation in Las Vegas. Some interpreted the post as a jab at Timberlake, as the post was captioned:

“It’s the little things.”

Nearly six albums into her career, Carpenter made Hot 100 history with her new single “Please Please Please” debuting at No. 2, and “Espresso” rising to a new peak of No. 3 on the list. The 25-year-old singer-songwriter became the first solo act in the history of the Billboard chart to land two simultaneous top-three hits without having previously charted in that realm.

“Please Please Please” was completed by a cinematic music video starring “Saltburn” star and Carpenter’s real-life boyfriend, Barry Keoghan. The song was co-written with Amy Allen, who also helped pen “Espresso.”

The singles will appear on her new album, “Short n’ Sweet,” due out Aug. 23. “This project is quite special to me and [I] hope it’ll be something special to you too,” she wrote on social media with the announcement. Half of the LP was produced by Jack Antonoff, along with returning collaborator, Julian Bunetta, as reported by Rolling Stone.

Carpenter released her fifth album “Emails I Can’t Send” in 2022 , as well as its deluxe edition “Emails I Can’t Send Fwd” the following year. It became her highest-charting to date and boasted a hot single “Nonsense,” a song that caught fire after she provided alternate closing lyrics while opening for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in South America and Australia. She also toured the album on her own 80-date headlining world tour.
