Domestic and international service on American Airlines has been seriously impacted by COVID-19. If you have a trip booked with American Airlines in the foreseeable future, you might have some questions.

What do you do if you want to cancel an upcoming trip due to the uncertainty of the situation, or for medical reasons? Will you still be able to maintain your AAdvantage elite status? If you have to fly, are there any lounges open? What precautions is American Airlines taking to keep you safe during your flight? Do you need to provide a negative COVID-19 test to fly?

This article will answer all of your COVID-19 questions related to American Airlines.

American Airlines has offered a more flexible change policy and waived cancellation fees in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. These policies apply to both paid and award tickets for all tickets (except Basic Economy fares)  — including non-refundable tickets.

We’ve broken down American Airlines’ change and cancellation policies due to COVID-19 in great detail. Click the link for full details, along with the other major airlines’ policies.

American Airlines is offering some concessions for its customers. For example, award tickets can be canceled without any redeposit fees , elite status has been extended through March 31, 2022 , and elite status requirements were lowered for 2021 (available to earn through February 28, 2022).

Explore our specific elite status extension details for American Airlines , along with what other major airlines are granting for their elite status travelers.

American Airlines Vacation Credit

While  AAdvantage elite members received a special one-time credit to use toward an American Airlines Vacations package, this needed to be used as of December 20, 2021.

AAdvantage Program Changes

The AAdvantage program has ditched its current set of elite-status requirements (consisting of Elite Qualifying Miles (EQMs), Elite Qualifying Segments (EQS), and Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQDs)) and introduced Loyalty Points , starting March 1, 2022.

Here’s a look at how many Loyalty Points you’ll need to earn to reach or retain each level of AAdvantage elite status in 2023:

  • AAdvantage Gold : 40,000 Loyalty Points
  • AAdvantage Platinum : 75,000 Loyalty Points
  • AAdvantage Platinum Pro : 125,000 Loyalty Points
  • AAdvantage Executive Platinum : 200,000 Loyalty Points

American is also giving another 6-month extension to all systemwide upgrade certificates that have an expiration date of July 31, 2022.

American Airlines specifically notes that significant schedule changes were made “due to significantly decreased customer demand as well as government travel restrictions — both related to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.”

On the recent Q3 2021 earnings report, American notes that it “continues to expect robust demand during peak travel periods in the fourth quarter, with more than 6,000 peak-day departures.”

It has also been starting and resuming more services to more outdoor-specific destinations, such as Colorado, Utah, and Florida into 2022.

International

During Q3, American announced new codeshare partners with IndiGo, India’s leading airline. In Q4, a codeshare agreement was reached with AerLingus, based in Ireland. These will expand American Airlines’ international footprint.

On their Q2 2021 earnings report , American also stated that it expects to fly more than 80% of its international seat capacity as compared to 2019.

American Airlines received governmental aid and loans as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act . Under the terms of this $65+ billion aid, all airlines — including American Airlines — were barred from cutting jobs through September 30, 2020.  These protections have since expired.

Touchless Check-In

When you check-in online for your trip, you can now check your bags without interacting with an American Airlines employee. Simply select Checked Bags and get your mobile or printed boarding pass. At the airport, you’ll scan your boarding pass at a kiosk to automatically print your bag tag, then attach it for drop-off at bag drop.

Note that this is only available for customers who:

  • Are the only person on the reservation
  • Flying within the U.S.
  • Booked in Main Cabin

For more information, check out the AA site .

Food and Beverage Service

Food and beverage service has been altered based on the duration of your flight and your cabin:

In addition, beer and wine are available in the Main Cabin on long-haul international flights to Europe, Asia, and Australia.

American Airlines also states that “ you’re welcome to bring snacks and soft drinks on board to enjoy during your flight.”

Seating Arrangements

As of July 1, 2020, American Airlines no longer caps capacity on its flights and will sell to capacity, so be aware that you might be sitting next to other passengers.

Disinfection Changes

American Airlines Electrostatic Spraying

American Airlines notes that its cleaning practices “have always met or exceeded all CDC guidelines” and are cleaned daily with an EPA-approved disinfectant . All planes also undergo a deep cleaning procedure “on a regularly scheduled basis.”

It also states that “most of our planes have High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters that provide a complete air change every 2-4 minutes.”

In response to COVID-19 specifically, it has begun “enhancing cleaning procedures on international flights and planes that stay overnight at an airport” and providing hand sanitizer and wipes to crews on international flights.

Starting in May 2020, American expanded the cleaning procedure to include thorough cleaning in customer areas, tray tables, seatbelt buckles, armrests, window shades, and seatback screens; it also includes wiping door and overhead bin handles. The procedure also calls for enhanced cleaning in team member areas, jumpseats, crew rest seats, cockpit surfaces, and the galley.

In December 2020, American Airlines achieved the GBAC STAR Accreditation from the Global Biorisk Advisory Council for all of its aircraft and lounges — the first of any major airline to have this.

Hot Tip: On April 18, 2022 a federal judge struck down the federal mask mandate and therefore American Airlines is no longer requiring masks on planes.

American Airlines masked flight attendant and passengers

Flight Attendants

As of May 1, 2020, American Airlines requires masks for all flight attendants during every mainline and regional flight. A drawer has been added in galleys on every flight containing personal protective equipment, including masks for flight attendants and pilots and other sanitizing items. Furthermore, American will also distribute face masks and either sanitizing wipes or gels to passengers who need them.

As of June 16, 2020, stricter requirements regarding face masks went into effect. To start, you must wear a mask or be denied boarding — even if you have a valid medical condition that precludes you from wearing one. Masks are required for everyone above the age of 2.

American released a statement that it “ may also deny future travel for customers who refuse to wear a face covering. American made this change after working in conjunction with Airlines for America on an industrywide response.”

Boarding Process Changes

The standard boarding policy stated that you needed to be at the gate 15 minutes before departure for domestic flights and 30 minutes for international ones. As of April 27, 2020, American has added an additional 15 minutes to those requirements, moving to 30- to 50-minute boarding windows. Furthermore, boarding used to end 10 minutes before departure; now, that’ll be 15.

For more information on boarding order, see AA’s website .

VeriFLY App

The digital health passport app VeriFLY is in place to assist with rapidly changing environments. When traveling internationally, the app will check whether the information and documents provided by the passengers are correct and in compliance with local authorities’ regulations.

If you travel internationally on American Airlines, be sure to download the VeriFLY app ( iOS or Android ). Within the app, you are able to select a destination and upload/show evidence of negative test results at the airport — all within 1 streamlined process. This will make it faster than showing paper results at the airport check-in counter.

In 2020, American Airlines retired 5 aircraft types (Embraer 190, Boeing 757, Boeing 767, Airbus A330, and Bombardier CRJ200), along with a number of older regional aircraft. The company also placed some Boeing 737-800 aircraft into storage.

Combined, these changes removed more than 150 aircraft from the fleet.

American Airlines also reached an agreement with Boeing to defer deliveries of 18 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft . Currently, 5 of the 18 737 MAX deferral rights have been exercised.

While this situation is constantly changing, it’s nice to see that American Airlines is trying to take care of its frequent flyers by allowing additional ways to maintain elite status and providing free changes.

If you must travel, there are increased measures to keep you safe at the airport and on your flight. Lounges have slowly been reopening with additional safety measures in place. Onboard, additional steps to disinfect surfaces have been put in place. From reduced food and beverage services to masks on passengers, your next flight might look a bit different.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is american airlines offering refunds for coronavirus.

You are currently able to change your flight free of charge. If your flight is canceled by American Airlines or rescheduled by more than 4 hours, you are entitled to a full refund. If you voluntarily canceled the flight, you will receive a voucher (except for Basic Economy tickets).

Is American Airlines extending elite status?

Yes, American Airlines is extending elite status for AAdvantage members until January 31, 2022. In addition, qualifying minimums have been reduced to achieve elite status for 2021 and additional opportunities to maintain elite status through 2023 have been announced.

Do I need to take a COVID-19 test before flying on American Airlines?

American Airlines itself is not requiring proof of a negative COVID-19 test to fly. However, if you are flying to a location that is requiring a negative COVID-19 test, it will ask for proof prior to boarding.

Currently, you must show evidence of a negative COVID-19 test to travel back to the U.S. from international destinations. Check the American Airlines COVID-19 site for more details.

Do I need to wear a mask on American Airlines?

Yes. Federal law requires every passenger (over the age of 2) to wear a mask at all times in the airport and throughout the flight. Refusing to wear a mask can result in denial of boarding, removal from the aircraft, and/or penalties under federal law.

American Airlines Offering At-home COVID-19 Test Option Before Flights to Select Caribbean Destinations

The airline started at-home testing with flights to Hawaii in October.

american airlines travel restrictions covid

Editor's note: Those who choose to travel are strongly encouraged to check local government restrictions, rules, and safety measures related to COVID-19 and take personal comfort levels and health conditions into consideration before departure.

American Airlines is expanding its preflight COVID-19 test program, allowing more travelers to easily conduct any mandatory tests before boarding their flights.

In partnership with LetsGetChecked , an at-home testing option, travelers headed to Belize, Grenada, and St. Lucia will have the ability to pre-test starting Nov. 16. The PCR test is taken at home, observed virtually by a medical professional. The results are available within about 48 hours, on average. Travelers are responsible for the $129 cost of the test.

“Our initial preflight testing has performed remarkably well, including terrific customer feedback about the ease and availability of testing options,” Robert Isom, President of American Airlines said in a statement on Monday.

Last month, American Airlines introduced a preflight testing program for travelers to Hawaii, Jamaica, the Bahamas and Costa Rica.

Starting Tuesday, the at-home program will apply to more flights to Hawaii, departing from Chicago, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. The tests must be completed within 72 hours of departure in order to be exempt from the state’s 14-day quarantine policy.

Travelers to Belize, aged six and older, must complete the test within 72 hours of departures. They must verify their results upon arrival or take another test.

Travelers to Grenada must complete the test within seven days of departure and fill out a pre-travel form.

All travelers aged five and older to St. Lucia must take the test within seven days of departure and will not be allowed to board their flights without presenting the negative results and pre-arrival registration. Travelers will also be subject to a temperature test upon arrival.

Pretesting will once again expand in December, with options becoming available for flights from Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Philadelphia.

Travelers can purchase an at-home COVID-19 test through the American Airlines partnership online. Those who do not wish to take the test at home can still visit a testing center in person.

Germany reports highest one-day virus increase

american airlines travel restrictions covid

The Associated Press

BERLIN — Germany has reported its highest one-day total of new coronavirus cases, while the number of deaths linked to COVID-19 has climbed above 20,000.

The national disease control center, the Robert Koch Institute, said Thursday that 23,679 new cases were confirmed over the previous 24 hours. That’s just above the previous record of 23,648 from Nov. 20.

A partial shutdown that started Nov. 2 has succeeded in keeping the surge from picking up speed, but the number of daily new cases have remained around the same high level in recent weeks rather than falling. Momentum is building for a harder lockdown over Christmas and New Year, and some regions already are introducing new restrictions.

That’s partly because deaths, which have been relatively low in Germany compared with several other European countries, have increased markedly. Another 440 deaths were reported on Thursday, following a single-day record of 590 on Wednesday.

That brought the total so far to 20,372. Germany has reported some 1.24 million coronavirus cases since the pandemic began.

On Wednesday, the United States saw more coronavirus cases than it had ever seen before in a single day. It was also the country's deadliest day in the pandemic.

The U.S. reported 222,994 coronavirus cases on Wednesday, according to an NBC News tally. The previous daily-case record was set a week ago on December 3, when the U.S. recorded 219,394 cases.

More than 3,100 Covid-deaths were also recorded.

Only half in U.S. want vaccine, AP-NORC poll finds

WASHINGTON — As states frantically prepare to begin months of vaccinations that could end the pandemic, a new poll finds only about half of Americans are ready to roll up their sleeves when their turn comes.

The survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows about a quarter of U.S. adults aren’t sure if they want to get vaccinated against the coronavirus. Roughly another quarter say they won’t.

Many on the fence have safety concerns and want to watch how the initial rollout fares — skepticism that could hinder the campaign against the scourge that has killed nearly 290,000 Americans. Experts estimate at least 70 percent of the U.S. population needs to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity, or the point at which enough people are protected that the virus can be held in check.

In the survey of 1,117 American adults conducted Dec. 3-7, about 3 in 10 said they are very or extremely confident that the first available vaccines will have been properly tested for safety and effectiveness. About an equal number said they are not confident. The rest fell somewhere in the middle.

The margin of error is ±3.9 percentage points for the full sample.

FDA authorizes at-home test kit that doesn't require prescription

american airlines travel restrictions covid

Phil Helsel

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday authorized a Covid-19 home collection kit that does not require a prescription, the agency announced .

LabCorp’s home collection kit must be sent away for analysis, but a top FDA official said that it removes a step. There are other collect-at-home kits, but this is the first authorized for sale over-the-counter at stores or online, the agency said.

The LabCorp Pixel COVID-19 Test Home Collection Kit involves a person collecting a nasal swab and then sending it in. If positive, users get a call from a health care provider. Negative results are emailed or available online, the FDA said.

Dr. Brian Caveney, chief medical officer and president of LabCorp Diagnostics, said in a statement that the authorization could help more people get tested and reduce the spread of the virus.

The FDA last month granted emergency authorization to a test that is taken at home and gives results at home, but that needs a prescription and is for people who health providers suspect have Covid-19.

LA cancels annual homeless count, citing Covid safety concerns

Alicia Victoria Lozano

Los Angeles County is postponing its annual homeless count, a federally mandated survey that stretches across the region and helps to determine funding allocated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

HUD granted the exemption as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and concerns by public health officials who said there was no safe way to mobilize thousands of volunteers in California's most populous county without exposing people to Covid-19.

“Since the pandemic first came to our region, LAHSA has put the health and safety of our clients, volunteers and community first. We did not come to this decision easily, but it is the safe one, and the right one,” said Heidi Marston, Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority executive director.

According to the 2020 homelessness count, which was conducted in January, the number of unhoused people in L.A. county increased by nearly 13 percent. The city of L.A. experienced a 16 percent increase in the number of residents experiencing homelessness.

More than 200 attend state department holiday party.

american airlines travel restrictions covid

Josh Lederman

More than 200 people attended a “holiday cheer” reception hosted by the State Department on Tuesday night at Blair House, the presidential guest house, a U.S. official tells NBC News.

The number of guests who attended was far short of the more than 370 who had RSVP’d to attend the event for the Diplomatic Corps — foreign ambassadors posted to Washington.

Of the roughly 200, about 70 were State Department staff and their guests. That means about 130 were members of the diplomatic corps and their families.

Among those who attended were ambassadors from Afghanistan, Argentina, Colombia, Egypt, Hungary, Iceland, Jordan, South Sudan, Nepal and the Netherlands. No ambassadors from G-7 countries attended, and the only ambassador from a G-20 nation who attended was Argentina's.

The attendees walked over to Blair House after attending a tour and open house at the White House, where they were given arrival times in an attempt to space out the guests at the White House.

Tayo Help fighting Covid-19 misinformation in the Filipino community

Suzanne Ciechalski

A group of Filipino professionals is working to provide the Filipino community with reliable information on Covid-19 through a new website, Tayo Help . The group, led by journalist Leezel Tanglao, launched the initiative to connect the community to resources, debunk misinformation and collect data on the Filipino community.

“Essentially, what we're building now is an information infrastructure for community resilience so that we're not always being so reactive, but we're always, constantly being proactive in responding to crises like this,” Tanglao told NBC News.

Tayo means “us” in Tagalog, a major language of the Philippines.

“We felt like it was very appropriate for this project because by helping us as a community, we are actually helping everyone else. ... That's one of the big goals for this project," Tanglao said.

Tayo Help was launched in October and is part of the Caretaker Project, run by the Filipino Young Leaders Program. The group received a grant from the Booz Allen Foundation earlier this year that helped launch the project.

Austin Mullen

For the first time, more than 3,000 Covid-related deaths were recorded across the country Wednesday, according to an NBC News tally.

The previous single-day record was set April 22, when 2,861 deaths were reported.

More than 290,000 people have died from the coronavirus across the United States since the beginning of the pandemic this spring.

As of Thursday, in the past week, the U.S. has averaged 208,179 cases per day and 2,307 deaths per day. That's up from 161,158 cases and 1,213 deaths per day four weeks ago.

Rudy Giuliani released from hospital after battling Covid

american airlines travel restrictions covid

Dartunorro Clark

Rudy Giuliani, President Trump's personal lawyer, was released from the hospital Wednesday after being diagnosed with Covid-19.

Guiliani called into Talk Radio 77 WABC Wednesday morning from the hospital, where he announced that he’d be discharged in the afternoon. He later said he would continue to quarantine for an additional three to four days.

Giuliani, whose diagnosis was announced by Trump in a tweet on Sunday, said he has “no pains, no fever” but a “tiny cough.”

He said he took some of the same medications Trump received after he contracted the virus in October . Giuliani described them as “miracles.” He continued to also spout baseless election fraud claims as the president's sputtering legal battle continues.

Guiliani's trip to Michigan to contest the election results there prompted the legislature to postpone a vote earlier this week.

2 Philadelphia police officers die of Covid-19, department says

Doha Madani

Two Philadelphia police officers died due to Covid-19, which the department characterized as line-of-duty deaths in a statement Wednesday.

Captain Frank Millilo died on Dec. 3 and officer Tab Ali died on Nov. 23 after contracting the coronavirus, according to the Philadelphia Police Department. Four Philadelphia officers have died of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

Millilo was a 31-year veteran of the force who served as commander of the department's Southwest Detectives. He is survived by his wife and three children, the department said.

Ali served as an officer for 25 years, 14 of which were spent working for the 5th District precinct. The department described Ali as "gregarious" with a "steadfast dedication" to the community.

Sacramento under stay-at-home order amid Covid surge

The greater Sacramento region will face a stay-at-home order starting Thursday at 11:59 p.m. after capacity in hospital intensive care units fell below the 15 percent threshold outlined by California public health officials.

The 13-county region, which includes the state capital, has an ICU capacity of 14.3 percent as of Wednesday, according to the state Department of Public Health .

Residents are required to stay at home as much as possible and minimize mixing with other households. Restaurants must close except for takeout and delivery and retail and food stores will limit the number of people who can shop inside to allow for greater social distancing.

California reported 30,851 new Covid-19 coronavirus cases and 196 additional deaths statewide on Wednesday.

Delta joins American in scrapping international ticket change fees

Leslie Josephs, CNBC

Delta Air Lines is getting rid of $200 international ticket change fees in hopes that the move will spur travel demand decimated by the coronavirus pandemic.

Delta, American and United in August dropped change fees for domestic flights. American last month expanded that to international travel, including long-haul routes.

Change and cancellation fees brought in $2.8 billion for U.S. carriers last year, according to the Department of Transportation. But with passenger traffic hovering around one-third of last year’s levels and once-lucrative international travel especially hard hit, airlines are scrambling to loosen policies that would encourage travelers to book.

Hackers accessed information about Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine, regulator says

Kevin Collier

Hackers have accessed some information about Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine that was stored on a European Union regulator's server, the company said Wednesday .

The European Medicines Agency, an E.U. agency that evaluates medical products, announced Wednesday morning it had been the victim of a cyberattack, and is currently investigating its severity.

As part of its investigation, the EMA told Pfizer and its partner in developing the vaccine, BioNTech, that the hackers were able to access "some documents relating to the regulatory submission for Pfizer and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate."

None of the organizations were immediately willing to name a culprit, but the U.S. government and a number of tech and cybersecurity companies have warned that China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia have all tasked hackers with stealing COVID-19 vaccine research.

Pentagon to get about 44,000 Covid vaccines as early as next week

american airlines travel restrictions covid

Courtney Kube

The military is expected to get about 44,000 initial doses of Pfizer’s Covid vaccine as early as next week, and has identified 16 locations around the world where the vaccines will be administered first, according to Pentagon officials.

“We expect to have shots in arms of personnel within 24 to 48 hours” of FDA emergency authorization, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs Tom McCaffrey said.

The vaccine will be voluntary for everyone to take, because it’s an emergency use authorization, Lt. Gen. Ronald Place, director of Defense Health Agency said, but added that the Department of Defense is strongly encouraging people to take it because the safety profile is good, he said.

McCaffrey said the initial vaccines will go mainly to health care workers and first responders, but that 44,000 covers less than 10 percent of that workforce. Assuming they get a re-supply, the next shipments will go to critical national capabilities and essential workers, including those assigned to nuclear deterrence, homeland defense, and key national strategic leadership.

A select group of very visible senior leaders will also get vaccinated in this first batch, McCaffrey said, as an effort to demonstrate confidence in the vaccine. That group includes: Acting Secretary of Defense Chris Miller, Deputy Secretary of Defense David Norquist, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General Mark Milley, and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General John Hyten. They are also looking at service leadership and combatant commanders for early rounds of vaccine.

Pennsylvania Gov. Wolf tests positive for Covid-19

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf is self-isolating at home after testing positive for the coronavirus, his office said in a statement.

Wolf, a Democrat, said he is asymptotic and "feeling well." His wife, Frances, is awaiting results of her test.

“As this virus rages, my positive test is a reminder that no one is immune from COVID, that following all precautions as I have done is not a guarantee, but it is what we know to be vital to stopping the spread of the disease," Wolf's statement read in part. "I ask all Pennsylvanians to wear a mask, stay home as much as possible, socially distance yourself from those not in your household, and, most of all, take care of each other and stay safe.”

Idaho health board ends meeting after protests outside site, members’ homes

An Idaho public health meeting ended abruptly Tuesday evening after protesters converged around the city’s health department building and outside the homes of multiple health officials.

The Central District Health meeting in Boise, Idaho, where members were expected to discuss a  Covid-19 health order , ended just 15 minutes into the agenda due to safety concerns related to the protests, various city officials said. A photographer with NBC News affiliate KTVB on the scene outside the health department estimated there were several hundred protesters present, most of whom were not wearing masks.

Health board members were listening to a presentation by Dr. David Peterman, CEO of Primary Health Medical Group, an Idaho hospital company, when a board member interrupted him and said there were protesters outside her home, according to  KTVB .

"My 12-year-old son is home by himself right now and there are protesters banging outside the door," Central District Health board member Diana Lachionado said, according to  KTVB . "I'm gonna go home and make sure he's OK."

Idaho is one of many states in which government efforts to institute pandemic mitigation measures have been  met with protests , but it's unclear how widespread those sentiments are. A Pew Research Center  survey from August  found that 69 percent of Americans thought governments had lifted outbreak restrictions too quickly.

Gov. Cuomo announces vaccine allocations by region based on nursing home residents, staff

Corky Siemaszko

The first doses of Covid-19 vaccine could arrive in New York “as soon as this weekend,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday.

First in line for the initial shipment of 170,000 doses of the Pfizer-made vaccine will be high-risk health care workers and nursing home residents, the governor said.

“Staff at every hospital will have access to this allocation,” Cuomo said.

And while 90 distribution centers have been set up around the state, the majority of first shots (72,000) are heading to New York City.

New York was the hardest hit state in the early days of the pandemic and still leads with nation with 3 5,987 Covid-19 deaths, according to the latest NBC News data.

Brazil registers highest COVID-19 daily death toll in almost a month

american airlines travel restrictions covid

BRASILIA, Dec 8 - Brazil reported 51,088 additional confirmed coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours and 842 fatalities from COVID-19, its Health Ministry said on Tuesday, marking the highest death toll since Nov. 14.

The South American country has now registered 6,674,999 cases since the pandemic began, while its official death toll has risen to 178,159, according to ministry data. Brazil has the world’s third highest case count, after the United States and India, and second highest death toll.

Easing  quarantines  in Brazilian cities have led to crowded bars and restaurants, giving some the impression that life has returned to normal. With the approaching holiday season, experts worry that COVID-19 will spread even faster.

Facebook removes some large health misinformation pages

american airlines travel restrictions covid

Brandy Zadrozny

Facebook has removed several large pages associated with a coordinated network of websites pushing health misinformation around natural cures and vaccines.

The removal of at least nine pages follows new research from the German Marshall Fund, a nonpartisan public policy think tank. The GMU research linked the networks back to five so-called alternative health websites, which they found operating 20 Facebook pages with a combined 65 million followers.

The most popular removed Facebook page, The Idealist, had 16 million followers and mixed funny or inspirational posts alongside links to the junk news websites, a common growth tactic of spammers. The websites garnered more than 71 million interactions on Facebook this year, according to the research.

The websites behind the network have a history of publishing content that misleads readers about health topics, including misinformation about vaccines and false claims that the flu vaccine is dangerous.

The pages flagged by GMF were removed under Facebook’s spam policies, according to company spokesperson Andy Stone.

The removal comes as Facebook faces pressure to contain health misinformation around the pandemic and as Covid-19 cases and deaths spike around the country. In the last month, Facebook  has removed  several of the largest anti-vaccination pages and groups,  and announced  it would start removing false claims about Covid-19 vaccines that have been debunked by public health experts.

“Content from the sites our researchers found swamped information coming from authoritative sites like the CDC and WHO — nearly 10 to 1,” said Karen Kornbluh, GMF’s senior fellow and director of its Digital Innovation and Democracy Initiative. “It undermines faith in scientific and medical experts and softens the ground for more dangerous conspiracy theories.”

American Airlines offering at-home Covid-19 tests for travelers flying to U.S. states with restrictions

American Airlines passengers, starting Wednesday, are able to purchase at-home Covid-19 testing kits if they are planning to fly to a U.S. state with coronavirus-related travel restrictions.

The domestic preflight testing program was announced by the airline on Tuesday in partnership with LetsGetChecked, a company that offers a variety of health-related at-home tests. Customers can purchase the testing kits for travel on or after December 12.

American Airlines previously offered at-home Covid-19 testing kits for travelers flying to international destinations that required a negative test prior to or upon arrival.

“We’ve made great strides to help open international travel with our testing partners, and we recognize the need for similar domestic travel solutions,” Chief Customer Officer for American Airlines Alison Taylor said in a press release . “As travel requirements continue to quickly evolve, we’re simplifying the research and COVID-19 testing fulfillment process for an overall more seamless travel experience.”

The airline said it will continue working with LetsGetChecked to expand the testing as state requirements change. Currently, 14 U.S. states of territories have Covid-19 travel restrictions.

The Covid-19 pandemic has decimated the airline industry. In late September , as many as 50,000 airline workers were furloughed and tens of thousands were laid off after Congress failed to pass relief aid to the industry.

Health Canada approves Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine

The Canadian government, on Wednesday announced the approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against Covid-19.

Health Canada said the vaccine was submitted for review on October 9 and "after a thorough, independent review of the evidence, Health Canada has determined that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine meets the Department's stringent safety, efficacy and quality requirements for use in Canada."

The vaccine is indicated for use in patients ages 16 and up. "Pfizer-BioNTech are running further clinical trials on children of all age groups and the indication could be revised in the future to include children if the data from these studies support it," Health Canada wrote.

Coach K wonders out loud: Should college basketball be played in pandemic?

american airlines travel restrictions covid

David K. Li

Duke University basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski on Tuesday night questioned whether his sport should be played, as America embarks on what's feared to be a dark winter of coronavirus spread .

“I don’t think it feels right to anybody,”  Krzyzewski said following his team's 83-68 loss to Illinois .  “I mean everyone is concerned.”

Krzyzewski stopped short of calling for a halt to college basketball. But he seemed to hint the sport could stop temporarily, as vaccinations roll out in early 2021.

"You have 2,000 deaths a day,” said Krzyzewski, who leads all active coaches in wins. “You have 200,000 cases, a million and a half last week. You have people saying that the next six weeks are going be the worst. To me, it’s already pretty bad. And on the other side of it, there are these vaccines that are coming out that where people say by the end of the month 20 million vaccine shots will be given, especially to our healthcare (workers) and the other who need it.  By the end of January or in February, another 100 million.  Well, should we not reassess that? And see just what would be best?"

The NCAA's wildly popular postseason basketball tournament, known as March Madness, was one of the first major cultural casualties of the pandemic earlier this year. The annual competition is usually held in cities across America, but the NCAA announced last month that its 2021 tournament would be played entirely in one region, so to limit travel and lessen the chance of spread.

Texas launches program to provide Covid-19 rapid tests to small businesses

Texas announced a program to provide Covid-19 rapid tests to the state’s small businesses in an effort to keep them open during the pandemic.

Governor Greg Abbott announced the program on Monday in partnership with the Texas Department of Emergency Management. The program will provide testing supplies to small businesses who choose to participate in the program, allowing them to administer rapid tests to their employees.

"This effective strategy will help us detect and mitigate this virus while ensuring that Texas remains safely open for business," Governor Abbott said in a  press release .

The launch will include participation from Chamber of Commerce organizations in Amarillo, Edinburg, El Paso, Laredo and Lubbock with plans to ramp up the program across the state. The program is similar to one designed for the Texas school system that provided access to rapid tests for all teachers in the state, which was implemented in October.

Texas has reported more than 1.3 million cases and more than 23,000 deaths from Covid-19, according to the latest NBC News data . It is just one of three U.S. states that has reported more than one million cases, the data shows.

U.K. probing if allergic reactions linked to Pfizer vaccine

LONDON — British regulators warned Wednesday that people who have a history of serious allergic reactions shouldn’t receive the new Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine as they investigate two adverse reactions that occurred on the  first day of the country’s mass vaccination program .

The U.K.’s Medical and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency is looking into whether the reactions were linked to the vaccine. The two people affected were staff members with the National Health Service who had a history of allergies, and both are recovering. Authorities have not specified what their reactions were.

In the meantime, the regulator has issued the warning for anyone who has had a significant allergic reaction to a vaccine, medicine or food. That includes anyone who has been told to carry an adrenaline shot or others who have had potentially fatal allergic reactions.

Britain settles in for arduous reality of coronavirus vaccination after euphoria of being first

american airlines travel restrictions covid

Alexander Smith

LONDON — Now the camera flashes have stopped, an arduous journey begins.

The United Kingdom  drew the gaze of the world Tuesday  by administering the first clinically approved vaccine to patients. It was a rare moment of optimism in a hellish year.

But for all the morale-boosting symbolism and  political tubthumping , this vaccine will make little practical difference to the vast majority of people for months to come.

A procession of mostly elderly patients —  one memorably named William Shakespeare  — earned rounds of applause and global attention as the first recipients of this groundbreaking medicine. But British doctors and nurses now face an unglamorous slog this winter that will be repeated in countries across the world.

The number of people receiving shots will be low at first — and it will take time to make any dent in a pandemic that's killed more than 62,000 people in the U.K. and more than  1.5 million around the world .

Santa's gone remote, but video calls take some extra magic

american airlines travel restrictions covid

Santa Claus is just like the rest of us in the pandemic, pivoting to remote, practicing social distancing, and working harder for the same pay.

Men who professionally portray Santa estimate they have seen a 30 to 50 percent drop in income from doing video call visits instead of a traditional mall, retail, or hired event, all while putting in as many hours.

Some say they miss the old magic. “I can’t hold babies, I don't have any children on my knee,” one Santa said.

And, like everyone else, Santas are weighing their choices and risks. One Santa portrayal artist said he turns down multiple requests per week from families contacting him through a gig message board who want a completely “old-fashioned” experience.

“They’re looking for Santa to come to the house for an hour. Five kids and 20 adults, and they want the kids to sit on Santa's knee without a mask,” he said.

“I get where you’re coming from, and feel for you folks,” he said. “But let’s try again next year.”

158 people arrested after massive 'super-spreader' party in Los Angeles County

Minyvonne Burke

More than 150 people were arrested and a juvenile sex trafficking victim was rescued after Los Angeles County authorities shut down a massive underground party.

Deputies broke up the party Saturday night at a vacant home in Palmdale, northeast of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said at a  news conference  on Tuesday that organizers broke into the home and used a rental truck to move their party equipment.

"This is how brazen this operation was," Villanueva said, calling the party a "super-spreader" event that could become a "deadly source of contagion" during the coronavirus pandemic.

"As you can see, this was a flagrant violation of the governor's health order. But also please understand that even without the health order, these actions were criminal in nature," he said.

As coronavirus surges, countries spend more on economic aid. But not the U.S.

The U.S. is facing  a new wave of Covid-19 outbreaks  straining hospitals, workers, businesses, and schools.

In this, the country is  not alone : Wealthy nations across Europe are facing a major surge in new infections too, as is Canada. But unlike their economic peers, elected leaders in the U.S. have left citizens to face the current crisis without any additional financial cushion from their government.

In the United Kingdom, the conservative government led by Prime Minister Boris Johnson has  extended relief to workers  that had been set to expire — a lifeline for millions contending with new lockdowns across the country. In Germany, officials  approved more funding  to compensate businesses affected by health restrictions. And in Canada, a new budget plan lays out  more aid to businesses  in hard-hit sectors to complement ongoing subsidies for workers, including $2,000 a month for those who have lost jobs or income due to the pandemic.

Public health meeting abruptly ends in Idaho as anti-mask protesters gather at official's home

BOISE, Idaho — Idaho public health officials abruptly ended a meeting Tuesday evening after the Boise mayor and chief of police said intense anti-mask protests outside the health department building — as well as outside some health officials’ homes — were threatening public safety.

The request from Boise Mayor Lauren McLean and the Boise Police Department came just a few minutes after one health board member, Ada County Commissioner Diana Lachiondo, tearfully interrupted the online meeting to say she had to rush home to be with her child because protesters were banging outside her front door.

The board had been expected to vote on a four-county mask mandate in Idaho’s most populated region.

Coronavirus is so widespread in Idaho that hospital officials have repeatedly warned they are becoming overwhelmed and could be forced to implement “crisis standards of care” — where the patients most likely to survive are given access to life-saving treatment because there aren’t enough of the resources to go around — as soon as the end of the year.

'Cruise to nowhere' halted after elderly woman tests positive for Covid

SINGAPORE — An elderly passenger on board a Royal Caribbean “cruise to nowhere” has been diagnosed with the coronavirus, prompting the voyage to be cut short as the vessel returned to Singapore on Wednesday.

The 83-year-old guest onboard the Quantum of the Seas tested positive for Covid-19 after reporting to the ship’s medical center with diarrhea, said Annie Chang, director of cruise at Singapore’s Tourism Board.

The passenger had tested negative prior to boarding, Chang said.

“The passenger was immediately isolated and his initial close contacts were identified and isolated,” she said in a statement, adding that the close contacts have since tested negative.

Chang said all leisure activities onboard the Quantum of the Seas had ceased immediately and passengers and crew were asked to stay in their cabins until contact tracing is completed. She said all onboard will undergo mandatory Covid-19 testing before leaving the terminal.

Pelosi, Schumer blast $916B White House coronavirus relief proposal

Rebecca Shabad is in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Chuck Schumer late Tuesday rejected a Trump-backed $916 billion coronavirus relief proposal that was offered by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy said the plan proposes a  $600 direct payment for individuals and $1,200 for couples , which is half the payment delivered by the March pandemic relief bill, the Associated Press reported.

In a joint statement, Schumer and Pelosi described it as progress that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., endorsed the cost of the package, but they signaled that the proposal was obstructing bipartisan negotiations already underway among lawmakers. The Democratic leaders also made clear that the reduction in unemployment benefits from what's on the table is something they could never support.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned that the country may not be able to have a traditional Christmas, as the national death toll reached a record daily high of 590 on Wednesday.

"As hard as it is — and I know how much love has gone into setting up the Glühwein [mulled wine] stands and waffle stalls — this is not compatible with the agreement we made to only take food away to eat at home.

"I'm sorry. I am really am, from the bottom of my heart. But if the price we pay is 590 deaths a day then that is unacceptable in my view."

Shops and hotels are closed in Germany until Jan 10. Almost 20,000 people have died from Covid-19 in Germany so far.

The statement didn't provide details of how the rules were broken but the Korean Yonhap news agency reported that some party-goers did not wear masks or follow social distancing rules.

U.K. investigates possible allergic reactions to Covid shot

LONDON — U.K. regulators say people who have a “significant history’’ of allergic reactions shouldn’t receive the new Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine while they investigate two adverse reactions that occurred on the first day of the country’s mass vaccination program.

Professor Stephen Powis, national medical director for the National Health Service in England, said health authorities were acting on a recommendation from the Medical and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, the nation’s medicines regulator.

“As is common with new vaccines, the MHRA has advised, on a precautionary basis, that people with a significant history of allergic reactions do not receive this vaccination after two people with a history of significant allergic reactions responded adversely yesterday,’’ Powis said in a statement. “Both are recovering well.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its domestic travel guidance for fully vaccinated people on Friday, lifting certain requirements while continuing to advise mitigation measures like mask-wearing and hand-washing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated its domestic travel guidance for fully vaccinated people, lifting certain testing and self-quarantine requirements and recommending precautions like wearing a mask and avoiding crowds. But health officials continue to discourage nonessential travel, citing a sustained rise in cases and hospitalizations.

The CDC updated its website on Friday to reflect the latest scientific evidence, writing that "people who are fully vaccinated with an FDA-authorized vaccine can travel safely within the United States."

The announcement comes less than a month after the CDC first released updated guidance about gatherings for fully vaccinated people, which it described as a "first step" toward returning to everyday activities.

Air Travel Is Opening Up Again, But That Doesn't Mean The Pandemic Is Over

The CDC considers someone fully vaccinated two weeks after they receive the last dose of vaccine. Those individuals will no longer need to get tested before or after travel unless their destination requires it, and do not need to self-quarantine upon return.

The new guidance means, for example, that fully vaccinated grandparents can fly to visit their healthy grandkids without getting a COVID-19 test or self-quarantining as long as they follow other recommended measures while traveling, according to CDC Director Rochelle Walensky.

Those measures include wearing a mask over their nose and mouth, staying 6 feet from others and washing their hands frequently. Masks are required on all planes traveling into, within or out of the U.S., under an executive order issued by President Biden.

But Walensky, speaking at a White House COVID-19 Response Team briefing on Friday, nonetheless discouraged all nonessential travel, citing a continued increase in the seven-day average of cases and hospitalizations.

"While we believe that fully vaccinated people can travel at low risk to themselves, CDC is not recommending travel at this time due to the rising number of cases," Walensky said.

CDC Director Fears 'Impending Doom' If U.S. Opens Too Quickly

CDC Director Fears 'Impending Doom' If U.S. Opens Too Quickly

She said that while vaccinated people can do more things safely, most Americans are not yet fully vaccinated. Those who are not must have a negative test 1-3 days before they travel under CDC guidance. They must either get tested 3-5 days after they return and self-quarantine for 7 days, or self-quarantine for 10 days with no test.

Walensky said on Monday that there is more travel occurring now than throughout the pandemic, including the winter holidays. She acknowledged that people have been looking to get away over spring break or take advantage of what they perceive as a "relative paucity in cases," and she said the country was seeing an uptick in cases as a result.

"The thing that's different this time is that we actually have it in our power to be done with the scale of the vaccination," she said. "And that will be so much slower if we have another surge to deal with as well."

The U.S. is already seeing an uptick in domestic travel, and many Americans are looking to book trips in the coming months in what experts described to NPR as a sign of "clear pent up demand for travel."

As the country's supply of COVID-19 doses has grown, so has Biden's goal for the number of shots in arms during his first 100 days, doubling the target to 200 million by the end of this month. Many states have already expanded eligibility to all adults or are set to do so in the coming weeks, well ahead of the president's May 1 deadline.

According to NPR's vaccine tracker , 16.9% of the U.S. population is fully vaccinated, and 30% has had at least one dose. Researchers estimate that 70% to 85% of the country would need to have immunity for COVID-19 to stop spreading through communities.

The CDC is not lifting travel restrictions barring the entry of most non-U.S. citizens from places including China, Brazil, South Africa and parts of Europe. It will continue to require airline passengers entering the U.S. to get a test within three days of their departure and show proof of a negative result before boarding.

The travel industry has been pushing for some of these restrictions to end. A group of 26 organizations sent a letter to White House COVID-19 czar Jeffrey Zients urging the federal government "to partner with us to develop, by May 1, 2021, a risk-based, data-driven roadmap to rescind inbound international travel restrictions."

While Some Spring Breakers Swarm Beaches, Many Stay Home, Dreaming Of Summer Travel

While Some Spring Breakers Swarm Beaches, Many Stay Home, Dreaming Of Summer Travel

"To be clear, at this time, we do not support removal or easing of core public health protections, such as the universal mask mandate, inbound international testing requirement, physical distancing or other measures that have made travel safer and reduced transmission of the virus," they wrote. "However, the data and science demonstrate that the right public health measures are now in place to effectively mitigate risk and allow for the safe removal of entry restrictions."

Travel and tourism have taken a considerable hit because of the pandemic with industry groups noting that overseas travel to the U.S. declined by 81% in 2020, causing billions of dollars in losses. Without lifting international travel bans, the U.S. Travel Association estimates that some 1.1 million American jobs will not be restored and billions in spending will be lost by the end of the year.

"Fortunately, enough progress has been made on the health front that a rebound for domestic leisure travel looks possible this year, but that alone won't get the job done," Roger Dow, the association's president and CEO, said in a statement . "A full travel recovery will depend on reopening international markets, and we must also contend with the challenge of reviving business travel."

American Airlines CEO Admits Mistake, Vows To Win Back Clients

American Airlines Group Inc (NASDAQ:AAL) is retreating from a strategy that CEO Robert Isom admitted drove away valuable corporate clients and hurt the airline’s revenue .

The Fort Worth, Texas-based airline had aimed to capitalize on a reduction in business travel post-COVID-19 by cutting sales staff. It also removed some fares from channels used by large companies, hoping to encourage direct bookings through American's website or app.

The approach backfired.

American Airlines did not see a boost and lost business to its competitors, reported the Wall Street Journal.

Both Delta Air Lines Inc (NYSE:DAL) and United Airlines Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:UAL) reported a 14% increase in corporate travel revenue in the first quarter.

“We can never be difficult to do business with,” Isom stated during an investor presentation. “Others are benefiting from what we've done over the last six months or so. We'll get that back.”

American's shares fell 13.5% on Wednesday, marking the largest single-day decline since June 2020. This drop followed the company's announcement of a reduced profit forecast for the second quarter due to weaker-than-expected revenue .

The airline also announced the departure of Vasu Raja , the architect of the new corporate booking strategy.

Also Read: Turbulent Outlook For American Airlines: Analysts Cut Forecasts As Competitive Pressures Mount

Raja, who served as American's chief commercial officer since 2022, aimed to reduce costs by bypassing travel agency commissions and enticing corporate clients with direct bookings.

Despite these efforts, the strategy alienated travel agencies and high-spending corporate customers. The company has now enlisted consulting firm Bain & Co . to reassess the approach.

American will now ease restrictions that limited frequent flier mile awards to bookings on its website and favored agencies. Instead of removing fares from traditional booking channels, the airline plans to add incentives to promote modern booking technologies.

Following American’s announcement, other airline stocks also declined as investors feared broader industry demand issues.

Stephen Johnson , American's vice chair and chief strategy officer, will take over the commercial operations and oversee the search for Raja's successor.

Price Action : AAL shares are trading higher by 1.3% at $11.47 at the last check Thursday.

American Airlines Backtracks, Will Allow Travel Agency Customers to Keep Earning Miles

Dennis Schaal , Skift

May 29th, 2024 at 3:23 PM EDT

American Airlines tried to drag an entrenched industry toward the airline's vision of a more productive distribution future. But the financial hit stung.

Dennis Schaal

Online and offline travel agencies had faced a July 11 deadline: That’s when flyers buying American Airlines tickets on certain booking sites would have no longer been able to earn AAdvantage Miles.

But American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said Wednesday that the airline has dropped the idea. It was part of an overall retreat in American’s direct-booking strategy as it faces softness in close-in bookings and a weaker financial outlook.

“Next month, we were going to differentiate who earned AAdvantage Miles and who didn’t, based on where they booked. That’s off,” Isom told investors and analysts at a Bernstein conference. “We’re not doing that because it would create confusion and disruption for our end customer, and we’re going to make sure that we take care. We’re listening to feedback.”

The plan had been that the airline would designate “preferred agencies” — who were required to book at least 30% of their flights through American’s New Distribution Capability — and customers of these online and offline travel agencies would have been able to continue to earn AAdvantage miles when buying tickets on these third-party sites.

Travel agencies that didn’t get the airline’s stamp of approval faced the prospect of losing lots of customers who would have had to book American flights on AA.com or a preferred agency.

The airline initially said it would designate preferred agencies by May 1, and later moved that deadline to July 11.

Travel Agency Reaction

Many agencies had no clue if they were going to make the cut.

Zane Kerby, president and CEO of the American Society of Travel Advisors, had fought the airline’s distribution policies, and applauded the airline’s reversal.

“I’m grateful for American Airlines’ renewed recognition of the essential role that travel advisors play in facilitating air travel for our shared customers,” Kerby said. “I want to extend my thanks to American Airlines CEO Robert Isom for acknowledging its previous approach was flawed. Reversing the decision to withhold AAdvantage points and miles for agency bookings is a testament to the firm position that travel agencies hold in the airline distribution channel.”

Kerby said he welcomed the opportunity to work with American Airlines on a “responsible implementation of its NDC program.”

When the news came, ASTA was coincidentally conducting it annual national conference in Dallas, in the airline’s Fort Worth headquarters back yard.

American hasn’t definitively given up on direct distribution, however.

“We’re learning and adapting,” Isom said. “We know that NDC, modern retailing provides a better experience for the end customer. And we know that we will get there over time, but we have to go about it differently. We’re going to make it easier, we’re going to execute better and we’re going to do a lot more to try to bring people along with us.”

American Airlines hits rough air after strategic missteps

By Kate Gibson

Edited By Alain Sherter

Updated on: May 29, 2024 / 5:44 PM EDT / MoneyWatch

American Airlines is cutting its financial outlook, with CEO Robert Isom acknowledging the carrier misjudged travel demand before the peak summer season.

The carrier's total revenue per available seat mile is expected to be off about 5% to 6%, versus its previous forecast calling for a decline of about 1% to 3%.

"The guidance cut seems to e a combination of both higher domestic competition (competitor fare sales and higher capacity) as well as a loss of corporate share given a de-emphasis post-pandemic," BofA Global analysts Andrew Didora and Samuel Clough said in a research note.

In a regulatory filing, American said it now forecasts second-quarter adjusted earnings in a range of $1 to $1.15 a share, versus its prior forecast was of $1.15 to $1.45 a share. Analysts surveyed by FactSet forecast second-quarter earnings per share of $1.20, on average.

The airline's shares tumbled nearly 14% Wednesday to close at $11.62. The nosedive came a day after American disclosed that Vasu Raja, its chief commercial officer, would depart in June. Raja oversaw an apparently backfired effort to push customers to book travel directly from American through its app and website instead of third-party sites.

The strategy including eliminating American's corporate sales team, which helped save on distribution costs. But "American is now losing share as corporate travel recovers," Didora and Clough noted.

Isom offered a similarly bleak view at an industry conference on Wednesday.

"Our expectation for domestic performance has worsened materially since we provided guidance in April for a few reasons," Isom said. "We're seeing softness in customer bookings relative to our expectations that we believe is in part due to the changes that we have made to our sales and distribution strategy."

After praising Raja as an "innovator, a disruptor" and good friend, Isom added "sometimes we need to reset."

In February American announced that as of May 1, customers would have to buy tickets directly from the airline, its partner carriers or preferred online travel agencies if they wanted to earn points in its AAdvantage loyalty program.

When the changes were announced, Raja said in a prepared statement that American was looking to make travel more convenient for customers and that by booking directly with the airline customers would get the best fares and it would be the most rewarding for its loyalty program members.

But the changes were met with criticism by some, who voiced displeasure with restrictions placed on how they could earn points for the loyalty program.

Isom said at the conference that American no longer plans to differentiate who earns AAdvantage miles and who doesn't, based on where they booked.

"We're not doing that because it would create confusion and disruption for our end customer, and we're going to make sure that we take care of it," he said. "We're listening to feedback. We're learning and adapting."

Preparing to travel

Being prepared is the best way to ensure smooth travel. Every airport is different, so do a little research if it's your first time flying to or from a city. You'll need a valid photo ID accepted by the TSA (like a driver’s license or other government-issued ID) for domestic travel and a valid passport or visa, and any travel documents required by your international destination.

Acceptable forms of identification Opens another site in a new window that may not meet accessibility guidelines.

Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or other accepted ID, like a valid passport or U.S. military ID, to fly within the U.S. REAL ID-compliant cards generally have a star at the top. If you’re unsure, contact your state driver’s license agency on how to get a REAL ID-compliant card.

TSA won’t allow you to pass through security checkpoints at the airport if your ID doesn’t comply.

The TSA Secure Flight program requires us to collect this information when you book including the:

  • Name as it appears on the government-issued ID you travel with
  • Date of birth
  • Redress Number (optional)

We may cancel your trip if we don't have this information at least 72 hours before departure.

You can check in on aa.com and in the app beginning 24 hours before departure. All airports have minimum check-in times. If you're not checked in by the minimum check-in time, you may lose your seat.

In most cities, you must be checked in:

  • At least 45 minutes before scheduled departure, for flights within the U.S.
  • At least 60 minutes before scheduled departure, for flights to or from airports outside of the U.S.

Some airports require you to check in earlier.

In general, you're allowed 1 bag and 1 personal item:

  • Your bag must fit in the sizer at the airport.
  • Your personal item must fit under the seat in front of you.

In the event the bins are full and you have to gate-check a bag, put any fragile or valuable items like keys, medication or computers in the personal item you bring on the plane.

There are additional carry-on restrictions for certain aircraft and airports.

Carry-on bags

If you’re a family traveling with children under 15, and do not already have seats assigned, our system will search for seats together automatically before the day of departure. We’ll try our best to keep you together, but if seats are limited, we’ll assign seats so children under 15 are next to at least 1 adult.

Traveling with children and infants

We care about our four-legged customers too. Cats and small dogs can travel in the cabin, but they must stay in an approved carrier that fits under the seat. Larger dogs can travel in the cargo hold of some planes. There is a fee to travel with your pet.

Traveling with pets

Service animals are welcome at no charge if they meet the requirements. The animal must fit on your lap, at your feet or under your seat, and cannot block the aisle.

Emotional support animals require specific documentation; please review the requirements before travel.

Service animals

For everyone's safety on board, some common items are restricted by the TSA and FAA. Be sure you know what you can carry on and what you can check in your bags before you go to the airport.

Hazardous materials

We don't transport hazardous materials, except for small amounts of dry ice.

Restricted items

You can travel with firearms in checked bags only. Firearms must be declared to an agent at check-in. There are other rules that apply.

On occasion, there are more checked-in customers than seats. When this happens, our team gets involved as early as possible to find volunteers to change flights in exchange for compensation.

When we don’t have enough volunteers, we have to choose customers to change flights involuntarily, or deny boarding. If this happens, we'll follow the DOT's compensation rules and get those customers on the next possible flight. We will not involuntarily remove a revenue passenger who has already boarded in order to give a seat to another passenger.

At the gate

You must be at the gate and ready to board the plane:

  • 15 minutes before departure on domestic flights
  • 30 minutes before departure for international flights

Be sure to check your boarding pass for boarding times. If you're not at the gate in time, your seat may be given to a standby passenger.

The doors close at least 10 minutes before departure. Once the door is shut, it will not be reopened unless there is health, safety or security issue.

We board in groups; check your boarding pass for your boarding group. We offer early boarding to customers who need special assistance or more time to board, along with families with children under 2 years who ask to board early.

Strollers should be checked at the gate before boarding and picked up after your flight at the gate, free of charge.

Wheelchairs can be gate-checked and picked up after your flight at the gate, free of charge. We are available to help you to and from your seat once you check your wheelchair.

On the plane

Welcome aboard! Anything you carried on must fit in the overhead bins or under the seat in front of you. If the bins are full or your bag is too big we'll help gate-check it. Musical instruments count as a carry-on and must fit safely in the bin, under the seat or in a closet (unless you paid for an extra seat).

Have a nut allergy? Though we don't serve peanuts, we do serve food that may contain other types of nuts and customers may carry on peanuts. We're unable to make special accommodations or provide nut-free zones on board, so we strongly encourage you to take all necessary medical precautions before flying.

And finally, our crewmembers are here to ensure a safe and pleasant flying experience for you and everyone onboard your flight. Please let them know if you have any questions and be sure to comply with their instructions, which are designed to keep you and everyone on board safe and comfortable.

American Airlines Faces Strike Threat as Union Negotiations Stall

Reuters

(Reuters) - A union representing flight attendants for American Airlines Group Inc on Friday asked workers to prepare for strike action after contract negotiations with the carrier failed to produce an agreement.

"We remain apart on the key economics of the deal plus the company's completely unacceptable demand for scheduling concessions," the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) said in a statement.

APFA said it believes that the National Mediation Board (NMB) which is overseeing the negotiations will bring the parties together for a "last ditch" effort in the next two weeks.

American Airlines and the NMB did not immediately respond to request for comment outside regular business hours.

Lawmakers in the U.S. have urged the NMB to take steps to help about 80,000 flight attendants reach contract deals.

Flight attendants at United Airlines, Alaska Air group, American Airlines and Frontier are among employees at more than a dozen airlines still working to reach new contract deals.
