True Exploration

Alaska is beautiful, yet largely inaccessible. to truly appreciate and experience this incredible land, one must take to the skies, soar among the peaks and ultimately land in a remote setting..

During our many years of exploring this special place, both by helicopter and on foot, the glaciers of Southeast Alaska have remained one of the most unique and captivating features we have encountered.

Since day one, we have been dedicated to sharing this environment with others through our top-rated helicopter glacier treks and tours. NorthStar Trekking was started with safety as the top priority and a commitment to provide an outdoor adventure tailored to the interests and abilities of each guest. Let our experienced team of pilots, guides and support staff guide you on an unforgettable Alaska experience. We look forward to seeing you on the glacier.

Hear from our many satisfied guests!

We booked the Helicopter Glacier Walkabout tour and it surpassed our wildest dreams! The staff was friendly and helpful, the equipment was in good condition, and the pilot and guides were knowledgeable. The thing that made it most worthwhile was the extraordinary views.

Some local friends pointed us to this company. Our pilot took us by some breathtaking spots on the way up, then our knowledgeable and friendly guide took us around the glacier. We and our kids had a great experience among this alien looking landscape.

My dream was to be a helicopter pilot. The pilots that we had were great (sorry I forgot your names but you both were great). Landed us on the ice light as a feather. Our excursion was to trek on the glacier and climb a 28ft ice ridge.

We took their Taku water, air and ice tour up the Taku river and to the Taku glacier. Mike our pilot was great and we had such an amazing day. It was so beautiful and almost seemed like a dream. If you can take this tour, DO IT!!!

The best day ever. Beautiful landscape (incredible and amazing landscapes) . We Learned a Lot about the dog camp thanks to Joy our guide. We want to do it again!! It's a must.

Add to My Trip

It takes the mind a few beats to catch up to the feeling of taking off in a helicopter. Liftoff happens quickly and smoothly and, on this bucket-list trip in particular, immediately reveals amazing views. The pilot deftly maneuvers the helicopter up and over the nearest ridgeline, plotting a course north toward the Knik Glacier. Along the route, passengers can often glimpse Dall sheep on the highest cliffsides, moose feasting in hidden meadows, and even black bears foraging for berries.

Step foot onto thousand-year-old ice.

Glaciers soon come into view, their vast bulks funneling down from seemingly endless icefields in the distance. The pilot explains some of the telltale features of the Knik Glacier, detailing the formation of its medial moraines and more. With a smooth arc, the helicopter descends from its path along the valley's southern mountainsides and swings down alongside the glacier's massive face.

The helicopter soon touches down on the glacier. Just as the first few seconds of helicopter flight seem unreal, so does stepping foot onto thousand-year-old ice. The icescape is otherworldly. The pilot helps passengers slip on crampons and then takes the group on a guided walk to some of the most impressive nearby features. There are pools of remarkably blue water, small rivers rushing within the glacier, and odd formations of rock and ice. The tour concludes with an equally sensational return flight.

The Knik Helicopter Glacier Landing Tour averages 30 minutes of flight time and 30 minutes of glacier time. Weather in the Chugach Mountains can change quickly, so guests should prepare to be flexible as the tour adjusts to suit to the conditions.

Note that this tour also operates in the winter, giving passengers a closer look at a spectacularly snowy Knik landscape.

The Alaska Trifecta! Glaciers, icebergs and amazing alpine views. Three remote landings in one phenomenal tour. If you only have one day in Alaska, this is a tour you should consider.

The Alaska Trifecta! Glaciers, icebergs and amazing alpine views.

Grand Knik Tour

This is one of our staff favorites as you have time to really experience the stunning beauty of the area by combining three activities. Fly by helicopter past Lake George, awarded Natural Landmark status for its scenic beauty. As the helicopter flies up what we call moose meadow, keep your eyes peeled for moose on the valley floor. Descending, you’ll realize the scale of the glacier as the ice wall comes into view. Everything out here is XXL size!  You will have a half-hour to explore and take pictures, calving happens often.

For your second landing, you will fly high above to an alpine meadow where you will have a unique birds eye view of the massive  Knik glacier below, with Colony and Cataract glacier across Lake George . There is a good chance we’ll see bears foraging along the hillsides during the flight. We almost always see moose and Dall sheep.

Finally, your grande adventure has you flying to the middle of the Knik Glacier for a third landing at the azure colored melt pools. See the deep blue ice, and learn about the life cycle of glaciers and why they are so  important to human life across the globe . You will have another half hour to safely explore the glacier with your experienced pilot / guide. Don't forget your water bottle so you can fill it up with that crystal clear glacier water! An adventure you will be telling friends and family about for years to come!

Excursion Overview

Your walk of a lifetime.

Our Helicopter Glacier Walkabout provides a full hour on the glacier to explore, take pictures, and appreciate the magnificent surroundings. The adventure begins with a short drive from our cruise ship terminal or other pick-up location to our helicopter base, located next to the Juneau International Airport. You will be outfitted in state-of-the-art trekking equipment and given a safety briefing before boarding one of our A-Star helicopters. Once loaded and ready, you will have an opportunity to explore Juneau's incredible range of ecosystems while soaring over old-growth trees of the Tongass National Forest, dramatic mountain ranges, and expansive flows of ice that change from white to brilliant shades of blue, before landing at one of our base camps in the Juneau Icefield. Landing sites will be selected depending on various weather and glacier conditions. You may visit any of the following glaciers: Mendenhall, Taku, Norris, Herbert, Gilkey, Battle, or Thiel. After carefully unloading, you will meet your guide who will outfit you with crampons to make it easier to walk on the icy terrain and a trekking pole for enhanced stability. Once prepared, your guide will lead you on an interpretive walk to explore the unique glacial features and learn about the local environment. There will be plenty of time to stop and take pictures of your great adventure before your helicopter returns for your flight back to our heliport. At the end of your tour, our comfortable vans will escort you back to your drop-off point.

Here are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) that tourists often have about Alaska Glacier Heli-Hike Tours:

A Glacier Heli-Hike Tour is an adventurous excursion that combines a helicopter ride with a guided hike on a glacier. Participants are flown to a glacier landing site and then led by experienced guides on a hike across the glacier’s unique terrain.

While glacier heli-hike tours are accessible to many people, they do require a moderate level of physical fitness. Participants should be able to walk on uneven and icy terrain. It’s advisable to check with the tour operator about any specific fitness requirements.

Dressing in layers is essential, as temperatures on glaciers can be colder than expected. The tour operator usually provides hiking gear, like ice crampons for traction on the ice, waterproof and sturdy hiking boots, harnesses, helmets, etc. It’s also wise to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and a camera to capture the breathtaking scenery.

While prior hiking experience can be beneficial, many heli-hike tours are designed to accommodate participants of varying fitness levels. Guides provide instructions on glacier hiking techniques and ensure your safety throughout the journey.

The best time for these tours is typically from May to September when the weather is milder (and relatively more stable) and the glaciers are more accessible. However, weather conditions can still vary, so it’s important to be prepared for changing conditions.

Many tour operators have age and fitness requirements, so it’s best to inquire in advance. Some tours are family-friendly and offer options suitable for children and seniors.

Tour operators prioritize safety and provide participants with appropriate gear and guidance. Guides are trained to navigate the glacier’s terrain and are well-versed in emergency procedures.

For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before your tour date.

If you cancel less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time, a 100% percent cancellation fee is applicable.

No changes are allowed within 24 hours of the experience’s start time.

Helicopter tours require good weather.

If the tour is canceled due to poor weather or non-fulfillment of the minimum number of passengers, you may be offered a different date or a full refund.

Scenic Juneau Helicopter Icefield Glacier Tour

Take a thrilling helicopter tour of Alaska's magnificent glaciers before landing on one to explore it up close. This Alaska helicopter icefield excursion is perfect for adventurers of all ages.

To start off your helicopter icefield Juneau tour, the helpful and courteous ground crew will help you board your modern helicopter before taking off on this fantastic Juneau glacier tour. In Alaska, helicopter tours are only the first step on your journey into the wild. Your experienced pilot will fly you over the enormous ice formations, deep blue crevasses and glistening ice rivers of Alaska while pointing out the once in a lifetime views out each window.

Your Juneau excursion will take you over the spectacular rock formations and icefalls of the Juneau Icefield, as it heads toward the Herbert, Taku, Lemon, or Norris Glacier. Depending on weather conditions, your skilled pilot will choose the best glacier to touch down on, so you can do a little ice exploration.

Upon reaching your destination, your expert pilot becomes your knowledgeable guide, shutting down the helicopter to escort you on an informative, relaxing walk across the glacier. Your guide will give you some detail on your natural surroundings and the deep history of these immaculate ice formations. Snowshoes are provided to give you an authentic Alaskan experience on the frozen glacier.

After 20 minutes or so strolling the blue hued face of the glacier, you'll climb back aboard the helicopter and lift off, watching your tracks in the snow disappear below you as you climb high into the crisp, cool air of Alaska. Your helicopter tour continues as you head back to the heliport and snap pictures of the breathtaking scenery of the Alaskan wilderness on the way.

This Juneau icefield helicopter tour lasts approximately one hour from the time it lifts off until it returns to the heliport, but will vary depending on which glacier your pilot determines to be the best on the day of your tour, based on weather and glacier conditions.

See the glaciers before they disappear on this truly unforgettable Juneau tour of Alaska's icy giants. Get the full picture of these behemoths from the helicopter before landing amongst the glaciers to get a greater understanding of their majesty.

Alaska Helicopter Tours Knik Glacier Landing Review

Flightseeing is an incredible way to experience Alaska and one of the best ways to experience Alaska’s glaciers . This enormous land is just begging to be seen from the air to fully appreciate its vastness and Knik Glacier is the perfect place to do it.

A blue pool of water on Knik Glacier surrounded by white and gray ice and high snow covered and glaciated mountains

Alaska Helicopter Tours provides the ideal opportunity to do this, as well as to get safely onto a summer glacier to see those gorgeous blue pools of water. This is a particularly good option for any slightly nervous flyers as the helicopter ride for the Knik Glacier Landing is relatively short and absolutely spectacular. This experience is also ideal if you have some extra time before your flight out of Anchorage as it’s a very convenient half day experience – they even provide a shuttle from Anchorage if you don’t have a car.

There are MANY wonderful flightseeing opportunities in Alaska (like helicopters to dog sledding, float planes to remote areas, helicopters to ice fields and flying above the Arctic Circle). I’ve been lucky enough as a former Alaskan and a guide and travel writer who spends several weeks there are year to participate in several flightseeing experiences.

Similar to the Denali Flightseeing tour with glacier landing (my other favorite!), the location of Alaska Helicopter Tours base near Palmer has fewer flights cancelled due to weather than some other parts of Alaska (like Southeast Alaska and Katmai National Park – which are also amazing).

Let me tell you a bit more about what to expect on this wonderful tour. This review covers my experience on the tour in May 2024. If you’d like to feel like you’re there with me, check out this short video of the helicopter landing on Knik Glacier and taking off again.

Where does Alaska Helicopter Tours fly from?

The helipad is at the Alaska Glacier Lodge about 50 miles northeast of Anchorage on Knik River Road. To get there, drive out the Glenn Highway and turn right on the Old Glenn Highway just before the Knik River bridge and then go straight/right on Knik River Road when the Old Glenn Highway goes left over the river towards Palmer. The road dead ends at the helipad.

Getting to Alaska Helicopter Tours without a car

If you don’t have a car, no problem! They have a shuttle van that goes from the downtown hotels in Anchorage out to the lodge, which takes about an hour. There is an additional charge for the shuttle but it’s much less than renting a car and a great option if you’re going car free or if you want to return your rental car a day early and head out to the glacier before you go to the airport.

Who is the Knik Glacier Landing Helicopter tour best for?

This is an amazing experience for anyone who wants to get up close and personal with a glacier and also for those who want to take in the vastness of Alaska’s landscape from the air without too much time in an aircraft. It’s also an ideal experience for anyone who wants to experience a helicopter ride in a stunning location.

I also highly recommend a helicopter tour for anyone who craves solitude. You will be with 2-4 other guests on your helicopter (depending on the model) and while exploring the glacier. It’s really amazing to be with just a couple other people in this beautiful place.

When is the best time of year to take a helicopter to Knik Glacier?

You can do this all year. However, if you want to see the blue pools, those are only visible in the summer when the snow is melted and the ice melts (May – September).

Wheelchair accessibility.

Contact Alaska Helicopter Tours directly about navigating getting in and out of the helicopter as a wheelchair user – they will do everything they can to make it work for you if they know in advance! The helicopter is quite close to the ground so does not require stairs to get in.

What to expect on your flight

When you arrive at the Alaska Glacier Lodge, check in at the building with the restaurant and deck. This is also the check in point for the lodge.

There are likely to be several helicopters departing at the same time, so you’ll need to be patient while everyone gets checked in. You will need to step on a scale to get an accurate weight with all your clothes/gear on. Make sure you have everything on you you are bringing in the helicopter before your weigh in.

Once everyone is checked in they’ll give you a safety briefing and then take you out to the helipad. Let the staff show you where to go and help you get settled for your safety and also to keep things running smoothly.

Once everyone is on board and you’re ready for lift off, you’ll fly up and over the Knik River to Knik Glacier and fly over the glacier before landing on it. You’ll see amazing mountains in all direction, the glacier below you and have an excellent chance of spotting wildlife below you on the flight – especially mountain goats, dall sheep, moose and bears. When I went, we saw lots of mountain goats in both directions.

When you land on the glacier your pilot will let the engine cool down and then help you step out of the helicopter. Make sure to stay where the pilot directs you to go and return to your seat at the time your pilot tells you to.

You’ll follow a similar route, though probably on the other side of the valley when you return to the helipad at the lodge.

How long is the helicopter ride?

The helicopter ride to land on Knik Glacier is about 15 minutes in each direction, leaving you about 25 minutes to explore on the glacier. These estimates vary based on the weather and other factors, but in general this is what to expect. Some of other tours have a slightly longer ride.

What can I bring on the helicopter?

Not much! You can bring what you can fit in your pockets and that’s it. Make sure you have sunscreen on and sunglasses and I’d recommend a couple of layers for cooler glacier temperatures (although the sun can be very intense).

Make sure your phone or camera is fully charged and ready to document the experience for you. You can not bring any back up batteries on the helicopter so make sure you have everything charged up.

You can also bring a waterbottle to drink some glacier water – pretty fun! Don’t miss out!

Other tour options with Alaska Helicopter Tours

If you want a longer helicopter experience or what more big adventures, Alaska Helicopter tours also offers glacier dog sledding in the summer, heli hiking, heli paddle boarding and kayaking (whaaaaaat?!?) and more.

In winter they offer heli skiing and heli ice skating (so cool!) among other winter adventures.
