Good - but needs status indicator

EDIT: Developer indicated that Apple does not allow the AdBlock icon to change color when Active vs Inactive. That's frustrating but I'm grateful for the Developer's feedback. FYI Apple - a bit more Developer leniency would be helpful in cases like these to enhance the user experience. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Works well for me - but why doesn't the icon gray out when I pause ad blocking? If I forget to turn it back on, the icon just remains blue and I forget that it's still paused. Please fix.

Developer Response ,

Hi, The blue icon is not something we can change -- Apple does not provide the functionality to gray out the icon if a app is active on a particular page. Because AdBlock is allowing ads, according to Apple, that means it's active. We wish we could change the behavior but we can't! Please do provide your feedback to Apple since this is something they can change. --AdBlock Support

Be prepared to be locked down for life

Adblock is just absolutely insane. It takes the liberty of putting itself front and center when you're in the middle of something to require some sort of action. "Hey look at me I'm adblock, I'm on your computer! I need to be updated every day!" It's as if it needs me to be reminded that it's installed on my computer EVERY DAY by stopping everything I'm doing and putting itself on a new tab for me to look at or pop up as an app for some sort of notification. And what's worse is when you try to delete it, it WON'T Delete. It'll tell you something like "The app can't be installed because it's still being used." And even though i turn off the eextension, it still says that and will refuse to be installed. This app is awful, please do yourself a favor and do NOT install this.
To prevent the AdBlock window from appearing, please go to the Settings tab and toggle the option "Launch at login" off. Note: you don't need to keep the app open to block ads in Safari. If you'd still like to uninstall and are running into an error message, I recommend this Apple Support article for additional information about uninstalling applications: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102610 — Kat C., AdBlock Support

Ad Block forever

Ad Block customer (forever). My MacBook and I - as an internet user(s) can never be without Ad Block. My daily 16 hours internet viewing and/or usage would not be as enjoyable, time efficient or educational - if I was constantly distracted with solitations, promotional items and marketing of products sent to me that I never need or will never purchase - I would not own a computer.
Thank you for your kind words! I'm so happy to hear AdBlock has improved your browsing experience. --AdBlock Support

Can't enable content blockers on your iPhone or iPad? Here's the fix!

adblock on safari not working

Whether you can't find the Content Blocker setting in Safari at all or you've found it and it's greyed out, here's how to troubleshoot and get you on your merry content-blocking way.

How to turn on the Content Blocker setting

If you can't find the content blocker setting, chances are you're either looking in the wrong place or you haven't yet installed a content blocker. For some reason, certain iPhones and iPads won't show the Content Blocker setting under Settings > Safari > Content Blockers until you've installed an applicable content-blocking app.

To do this, visit the App Store and pick any one of the content blockers currently on sale. (We really like Crystal and Purify

After you've installed the blocker, head back to Settings > Safari ; the Content Blockers menu should appear under the General subsection, below Block Pop-Ups .

How to fix greyed-out Content Blocker switches

If you've installed a content blocker and gone to enable it, only to find that the switch for doing so in Safari's preferences is disabled, you've likely accidentally enabled Restrictions for Safari. To check and see if you have (and disable such things), follow these steps.

  • Go to Settings > General > Restrictions and enter in your passcode.
  • Scroll down to the Allowed Content section. Do you have any restrictions set for websites other than All ? If so, you'll need to disable them in order to activate your content blockers. (Alternatively, just turn Restrictions Off .)

adblock on safari not working

  • Return to Settings > Safari > Content Blockers .

You should now be able to turn on your content blocker of choice. Once you've done so, you can reenable your Restrictions (by going to Settings > General > Restrictions > Websites ); the Content Blockers screen will be greyed out once more, but any blocker you set to activate will still be active.

Still can't get your content blocker of choice to work? Ping us in the comments and we'll try to help troubleshoot.

How to adblock Safari and Chrome on a Mac

David Price

Annoyed by online adverts and want to get rid of them? You’ve come to the right place. In this article we explain how to easily block adverts, popups, trackers and more on your Mac, using a variety of free and paid-for tools in the Safari and Chrome web browsers.

We have a separate guide if you specifically wish to block autoplay videos on Mac . And another for those who wish to block ads on iPhone or iPad .

Before we proceed, please bear in mind that the site whose adverts you’re blocking probably relies on revenue from advertising. That may not worry you, and we know that some of the online advertising out there really does cross a line in terms of intrusiveness. Just don’t complain if a site you love suddenly closes, or starts to charge visitors, because people refused to view its adverts.

Adblock in Safari

We’ll start with how to block adverts using Apple’s web browser, Safari. IN this article we have details of some third-party ad blockers that work with Safari but you don’t actually have to install a third party ad blocker to not see adverts in Safari – you can just set up Safari to block ads for you, here’s how:

Block ads in Safari using Reader mode

Strictly speaking, if you want to block adverts in Safari on the Mac you’ll need to install third-party ad-blocking software – and we’ll talk about that in a moment. But a far simpler approach is to use Safari’s built-in Reader mode, which is practically as good.

Reader isn’t quite an ad blocker, because it blocks a bunch of other visual distractions too: sidebars, mastheads, comments, social elements, videos. (It’s the same principle as the ‘Read later’ services we discuss at the end of this article.) You just get the text and the pictures, which can be a far calmer experience than some of the more visually ‘busy’ sites.

As a general rule, you can activate Reader mode at any time, although it’s not really possible on Home pages of sites that feature multiple stories and links.

There are a few different ways to enable the Reader mode. Here’s how to enable Reader mode in Safari:

  • Go to the menu bar at the top of the screen and select View > Show Reader
  • Hit Shift-Command-R.
  • Click the Reader button (the one with three and a half horizontal lines) next to the URL bar.

How to block ads on Mac: Reader

This will then strip the page down to its bare bones, leaving only the content behind.

How to block ads on Mac: Reader mode

From Safari 11 onwards it’s been possible to be more sophisticated and tell the browser to always open article pages from particular domains in Reader mode – or even to use Reader by default all the time.

Here’s how to set reader mode up for certain websites:

When you’re on a site you want to give this treatment, go to Safari > Settings for This Website (or you can right-click the URL box and choose Settings for This Website).

How to block ads on Mac: Use Reader when available

You can also remove domains from, and add them to, the Reader list in Safari’s Preferences page. Click on Safari > Preferences.

Click on the Websites pane.

Select Reader in the left-hand column.

You’ll see a list of all the websites currently open and any you have configured to use Reader. Select the website you want to default to Reader mode and click the menu to the right of it and select On (or Off if you don’t want it to use Reader mode).

How to use Reader mode all the time on Safari

You can actually set Reader mode to be the default option on any website that supports it! Here’s how:

  • As above go to Safari > Preferences and choose Reader.
  • At the bottom of this page you’ll see the option: ‘When visiting other websites’. Set this to On and Reader will be activated by default on all compatible web pages.

Note that if you have a website that is already defaulting to Off then you won’t see it in Reader mode.

How to block popup adverts in Safari

If popup ads are driving you mad then you can quickly put a stop to them. Since Safari 11 it’s been possible to block pop-up windows via Safari Preferences.

In Safari 12 and 13 here’s what you need to do:

  • Go to Preferences.
  • Select the Websites tab.
  • Click on the Pop-up Windows option in the left-hand column.
  • Now you can either make a rule for the website you’re currently visiting by clicking on the drop down menu to the right of its name, or go to the bottom of the window and click on the drop-down menu next to ‘When visiting other websites’.
  • Then select either Block and Notify, Block, or Allow.

How to block ads on Mac: Block popups in Safari

Best ad blocker for Safari

Reader mode is a great solution, but if you want to block the adverts but leave the rest of the visual elements intact, you need to install a third-party ad blocker. There are lots of them out there, plenty of which are free, but tread carefully.

Our top recommendation is be the donation-ware Safari extension AdBlock, which deals with graphical ads, text ads and even ads in YouTube videos.

AdBlock also lets you whitelist pages on sites whose adverts you do want to see, to support them or because the ads may be useful. To whitelist the whole site you’ll need to upgrade to the AdBlock Gold level that costs £4.99/$4.99.

You can download AdBlock here .

If you’re looking for something a little more advanced, we recommend AdGuard . It comes in two forms: a free-to-use Safari extension and a £29/$30 app with a 14-day free trial. While the Safari extension is decent and acts in a similar way to AdBlock, the desktop app provides advanced features across macOS, not dependent on a particular browser.

As well as blocking ads and pop-ups from websites, you’re able to block tracking from most online sources and even be warned of malicious websites that you might stumble across online. It provides granular control over your ad blocking settings, allowing you to whitelist sites and self-promoting ads, and is incredibly simple to use.

You can download AdGuard here .

Best ad tracker blockers

Another pest online: trackers that follow your movements around the web to serve up ads. This is why you’ll be looking at a product on one site, then an ad for it magically appears when you visit another site.

To stop this intrusive (and frankly creepy) behaviour follow these steps:

Open up Safari and go to Preferences > Privacy and enable the ‘Prevent cross-site tracking’ option.

Block ads in Chrome on the Mac

Google’s Chrome browser is a popular alternative for Mac users, and even though Google is a full paid-up member of the advertising fan club, it allows plenty of scope for ad-blocking.

How to block Popups in Chrome

Let’s start by disabling popups, something which can be done from Chrome’s own settings – no need to install any extensions.

  • In Chrome select Chrome > Preferences.
  • Scroll down and click Advanced.
  • Below the heading ‘Privacy and security’, click the option Content settings.

How to block ads on Mac: Block popups in Chrome

Best Chrome ad blockers on the Mac

As with Safari, Chrome won’t actually block adverts for you – and there isn’t an easily accessed equivalent of Reader mode. (Google has publicly discussed something similar called Distill Mode, but there’s no straightforward way for Mac users to turn this on without recourse to extensions.)

Many well known ad blockers are browser-agnostic, fortunately. The two suggested above – AdBlock and AdGuard – are both able to deal with adverts in Chrome.

‘Read later’ services

If you decide you don’t want to install an ad blocker, an alternative solution is to use a read-later service. These are simple systems that let you easily save an article in a form that strips out the adverts; you can then read if later (or right away, for that matter) without being troubled by all the visual tomfoolery.

Our favourite such service is Pocket . Sign up to the service and you’ll be able to create a ‘Read later’ button as a bookmark in Safari, Chrome or whichever other browser you like.

Open an article, click the button and it’ll save to your account. You can then read the ad-free version online (from any machine) or, best of all in our experience, offline using the iPhone app .

Block pop-up ads and windows in Safari

Learn how to block pop-up windows and handle persistent ads on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Pop-ups can be ads, notices, offers, or alerts that open in your current browser window, in a new window, or in another tab. Some pop-ups are third-party ads that use phishing tactics such as warnings or prizes to trick you into believing they’re from Apple or another trusted company, so that you’ll share personal or financial information. Or they might claim to offer free downloads, software updates, or plug-ins to try to trick you into installing unwanted software.

Use these tips to help manage pop-ups and other unwanted interruptions.

Avoid interacting with pop-ups

Unless you’re confident that they are a legitimate ad, avoid interacting with pop-ups or webpages that seem to take over your screen.

If you see an annoying pop-up ad in Safari, you can go to the Search field and enter a new URL or search term to browse to a new site. If you don’t see the Search field on your iPhone or iPad, tap the top of the screen to make it appear.

Some pop-ups and ads have fake buttons that resemble a close button, so use caution if you try to close a pop-up or ad. If you're not sure, avoid interacting with it and close the Safari window or tab.

On your Mac, you can quit Safari, then press and hold the Shift key while opening Safari. This prevents Safari from automatically reopening any windows or tabs that were open.

Update your software

Always install the latest software updates for all of your Apple products. Many software releases have important security updates and may include improvements that help control pop-ups.

The safest way to download apps for your Mac is from the App Store. If you need software that isn’t available from the App Store, get it directly from the developer or another reliable source, rather than through an ad or link.

Check Safari settings

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Safari.

Turn on Block Pop-ups.

Turn on Fraudulent Website Warning.

On your Mac, open Safari and choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences) from the menu bar.

In the Websites tab , you can configure options to allow or block some or all pop-ups .

In the Security tab , turn on the setting to warn when visiting a fraudulent website.

If adware or other unwanted software is installed on Mac

If you see pop-ups on your Mac that just won’t go away, you might have unintentionally downloaded and installed adware (advertising-supported software) or other unwanted software. Certain third-party download sites might include software that you don’t want along with the software that you do.

If you think that you might have malware or adware on your Mac:

Update to the latest version of macOS. If your Mac is already using the latest version, restart your Mac. macOS includes a built-in tool that removes known malware when restarting.

Check your Applications folder to see if you have any apps that you don't expect. You can uninstall those apps .

Check the Extensions tab in Safari settings to see if you installed any unnecessary extensions. You can turn extensions off .

If you continue to see advertising or other unwanted programs on your Mac, contact Apple.

AdGuard, uBlock both should work well.

Ublock isnt supported in Safari 13 in High Sierra. Adguard seems very heavy/slow and buggy while i tried it. I looked into reviews of other adblock apps in appstore, and most of them are broken now and cant block youtube ads, probably due to some updated privacy tricks by Youtube algorithm.

How to Fix AdBlock Not Working on YouTube

Method 1: log out and back into your youtube account.

Method 2: Disable & Re-enable Adblock extension

Nothing fixes tech problems like the evergreen turn off and back on again method. The changed YouTube policy has been playing unskippable ads on browsers equipped with Adblock. While individuals that aren’t using Adblock only have to deal with skippable ads. A simple solution to this impartiality by YouTube is to disable Adblock for a short period of time and then re-enable it later.

For Google Chrome users:

1. As obvious, start by launching the browser application and click on the three vertical dots (or three horizontal bars, depending on the Chrome version) present at the top-right corner of the browser window.

2. In the ensuing drop-down menu, hover your mouse over the More Tools  option to open a sub-menu.

3. From the More Tools sub-menu, click on Extensions .

(You can also access your Google Chrome extensions by visiting by the following URL  chrome://extensions/ )

2. Switch to the Extensions  section and disable Adblock by clicking on the enable-disable toggle switch.

Switch to the Extensions section and disable Adblock by clicking on the enable-disable toggle switch

Method 3: Update or Reinstall Adblock to the latest version

It is quite possible that Adblock not working on YouTube is due to an inherent bug in a certain build of the extension. In that case, the developers have likely released a new version with the bug fixed and all you need to do is update to it.

By default, all browser extensions are updated automatically . However, you can also update them manually through your browser’s extension store.

1. Follow the steps explained in the previous method and land yourself on the Extensions page  of your respective web browser.

2.  Click on the  Remove  (or Uninstall) button next to  Adblock and confirm your action if asked to.

Method 4: Update Adblock Filter List

Adblock, like other ad-blocking extensions, maintains a set of rules to determine what should be blocked and what shouldn’t. This set of rules is known as the filter list. The list is updated automatically to adjust if a particular website changes its structure. The change in the YouTube policy was most likely accommodated by a change in its underlying structure.

To manually update Adblock’s filter list:

1. Locate the Adblock extension icon on your browser toolbar (usually present at the top-right corner of the browser window) and click on it.

In newer versions of Chrome, all extensions can be found by clicking on the jigsaw puzzle icon .

2. Select Options  from the drop-down that follows.

3. Switch to the Filter lists  page/tab from the left panel.

4. Finally, click on the red Update Now  button present next to ‘I will fetch updates automatically; you can also’

Switch to the Filter lists and click on the red Update Now button | Fix Adblock No Longer Working on YouTube

5. Wait for the Adblock extension to update its filter list and then close the Adblock Options tab .

6. Restart  your computer.

Once restarted, open your web browser and visit YouTube. Click on a random video and check if any ads still run before the video starts to play.

The Ins and Outs of Commissioning a Work of Art

Requests for private commissions are not always granted, but those that are can deepen relationships between buyers, artists and galleries..

adblock on safari not working

The commission conversation often starts with, or gets around to, a client telling the chief executive officer of New York’s Petzel Gallery that they love the work of one of the artists represented by the gallery… it’s just that none of the pieces currently in the gallery is right for a particular space in their home or, if they represent a corporation or nonprofit agency, a lobby or some other public area. That’s when Andrea Teschke , also a partner in the gallery, brings up the idea of a private commission. “It happens with some regularity and with some artists more than others,” she tells Observer.

Petzel Gallery doesn’t advertise that some of its artists take private commissions, and most clients don’t think to ask, she says. But perhaps they should. Many art galleries are happy to entertain the prospect of a private commission for the artists they represent. “One of our strengths is the nurturing and management of private or public commissions by a number of sculptors of the gallery,” says Mary Sabbatino , vice president and partner at New York’s Galerie Lelong. With private collectors, “the client may see an artwork in the gallery that is sold and ask if the artist can make something in the same ‘family.’ At that point, we discuss a commission. Some artists are open to this and like the challenge, while others feel the idea is finished.”

At both Galerie Lelong and Petzel, the price of a ready-made piece and one that is commissioned are the same—the only difference being there are no discounts (five or ten percent, customarily) for artworks the artist already has produced. Private commissions create a “pride factor” on the part of buyers who see themselves as part of the creative process in terms of indicating what they want and seeing that come to life. In the process, they acquire not just an object but also a story about the piece. A private commission allows them to talk about the artist and their relationship with that person, as well as the genesis of the artwork and how it progressed. That extra involvement adds considerable personal value to the commissioned work.

For the gallery, there rarely are any drawbacks other than perhaps one fewer work for the gallery to exhibit. Among the many benefits is the fact that the connection between buyer, artist and gallery becomes closer, which makes future purchases of that or some other artist’s work at the gallery more likely.

That said, artist commissions can create extra work for galleries. Teschke stated that the gallery handles all communication between artist and buyer (the two never actually speak, text or email each other), and according to Liz Bower , a director at Galerie Lelong, “private commissions are much more time-consuming than other sales,” and often require the writing of a contract, which “can get quite lengthy, such as those for [sculptor] Andy Goldsworthy, all of whose pieces are site-specific.” Pages and pages of details lay out the timeline of a project, starting with the artist visiting the site and then creating a proposal, how and when the proposal is approved, how and when the completed sculpture is installed, how the piece will be maintained, the price of the artwork and how payments will be made, travel costs and fabrication fees.

Painter Robert Kushner has “done quite a lot of private commissions, most of which have come through my dealer,” D.C. Moore Gallery in New York. Known as a leader in the pattern and decoration movement, he creates “things that people want to live with.” One client was a woman in Seattle, Washington who wanted him to paint images on doors for a walk-in closet in her home: “I met the woman during a site visit, and I liked her. I really liked her art collection and wanted my work to be part of that.” Another client was Manhattan restaurateur Danny Meyer who commissioned Kushner to cover the walls of his Gramercy Tavern, a work that measured six feet by ninety feet. “We negotiated the exact size, the due date and the price. I asked him what he was looking for, and he told me ‘étonnez-moi,’ astonish me.”

A colorful mural hanging over a bar

Another artist who regularly accepts private commissions is painter Will Wilson , a long-time West Coast artist who currently resides in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and is represented by Gallery Henoch in New York City. “A lot of the people who have bought my works in a gallery also want me to do a commission,” he tells Observer. One of those people was Michael Jackson , who had seen a show of his paintings at San Francisco’s John Pence Gallery and was interested in a particular work on display. “The one he wanted, which was called ‘Sleepwalking,’ was already sold, but I asked that buyer for permission to make another version of it, and he said yes,” and that was his first commissioned work for the singer. Not long after, Jackson asked him to paint an image for one of his last albums, Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix.

Working one-on-one with a specific client appeals to some artists more than others. “I’ve always liked the people who want to commission me,” Wilson says. “When someone buys my work, I’m disposed to like them.” Kushner, on the other hand, keeps stricter boundaries. Visiting his studio, for instance, is not a client’s right. “My studio is sacred. I let people know that this is a privilege.”

Requests for private commissions are not always granted. Artists may bristle at being told what to do and what colors to use. “One out-of-towner said to me, ‘I love your work, but I hate pink,’” Kushner recalls. “I use a lot of pink, so that didn’t work out.” They may also be loath to do something they’ve done before. “Been-there-done-that, probably not; but slightly out of the ordinary gets an artist’s attention,” says one New York City gallery owner who prefers to stay anonymous. And an artist may simply not have the time, or a proposed subject may not appeal to them. “A corporation wanted me to include some of its products in a still-life,” Massachusetts painter Scott Prior tells Observer. He ended up saying no to the commission.

Google to push ahead with Chrome's ad-blocker extension overhaul in earnest

Starting monday, users will gradually be warned the end is near.

On Monday, some people using Beta, Dev, and Canary builds of Google Chrome will be presented with a warning when they access their browser's extension management page – located at chrome://extensions .

The banner will say that legacy Manifest V2 browser extensions will stop working soon.

Those extensions include ad-blockers and other content filters that rely on the Manifest V2 API. And though leading ad-blocking extensions more or less support Manifest V2's successor, conveniently named Manifest V3, there is still some argument that these filters will be disadvantaged under version 3 when they are no longer allowed to use version 2.

In any case, users are going to be warned that V2 is on the way out.

"This will be followed gradually in the coming months by the disabling of those extensions," said David Li, product manager for Chrome Extensions, in a blog post published Thursday.

"Users will be directed to the Chrome Web Store, where they will be recommended Manifest V3 alternatives for their disabled extension. For a short time after the extensions are disabled, users will still be able to turn their Manifest V2 extensions back on, but over time, this toggle will go away as well."

The manifest file for a browser extension is where developers declare its capabilities via the Chrome Extension APIs .

The transition from Manifest V2 to Manifest V3 has been underway for at least five years. It makes new APIs available to browser extensions and removes old ones. The most salient of these is the blocking version of the webRequest API, which is used to intercept and alter network traffic prior to display. Under Manifest V2, it's what extension developers use to stop adverts, trackers, and other content appearing on pages, and prevent certain scripts from running.

The new MV3 architecture reflects Google's avowed desire to make browser extensions more performant, private, and secure. But the internet giant's attempt to do so has been bitterly contested by makers of privacy-protecting and content-blocking extensions, who have argued that the Chocolate Factory's new software architecture will lead to less effective privacy and content-filtering extensions.

As a result of this multi-year tussle and concessions Google has made to frustrated extension developers, the current version of MV3 is generally perceived to be better than initially proposed, but hasn't entirely addressed developer concerns or provided functionality that's equivalent to what's being removed.

Li acknowledged the issue by noting the ways in which Google has been responsive, by adding support for user scripts, for offscreen documents that have access to the DOM API, and by increasing the number of rulesets in the declarativeNetRequest API (the replacement for webRequest ) to 330,000 static rules and 30,000 dynamics ones. Those rules can be used by ad-blockers to weed out adverts and other stuff for users.

Manifest V3 is now supported to varying degrees by other browsers, such as Edge, Firefox, and Safari. And by the beginning of 2025, when the API changes have been available for some time in the Chrome Stable channel, Manifest V2 extensions will stop working.

Enterprises using the ExtensionManifestV2Availability policy will be spared until June 2025.

According to Li, more than 85 percent of actively maintained extensions in the Chrome Web Store support Manifest V3, "and the top content filtering extensions all have Manifest V3 versions available – with options for users of AdBlock, Adblock Plus, uBlock Origin and AdGuard."

For users of uBlock Origin , which runs on Manifest V2, "options" means using the less capable uBlock Origin Lite , which supports Manifest V3. ®
