If you take multiple trips every year, insuring each one can be a hassle. There are forms to fill out, comparison shopping over and over again, and then remembering the policy documents for each specific trip. And then there’s the risk you might forget to take out travel insurance for one of your trips.

Plus, those costs add up. There must be a better way.

Enter annual travel insurance. Also known as multi-trip travel insurance, taking out an annual policy covers you for a whole year of travel. Not only is it simpler, it may be cheaper than taking out multiple single-trip policies. But is it right for you?

Annual travel insurance policies aren’t exactly the same as the trip insurance you’d buy for a weeklong holiday with your family. Here are the best annual travel insurance policies, what they do and don’t cover, and how to decide whether taking out a yearly policy might be right for you.

GeoBlue Trekker Choice

GeoBlue Travel Insurance annual plan comparison chart

GeoBlue offers 2 Trekker plans for annual coverage, which are unique in several ways. These plans cover preexisting conditions, COVID-19, and all travel outside the U.S.

However, they don’t cover any trips inside the U.S. or provide any coverage for canceled, delayed, or interrupted trips. Instead, these are travel medical insurance plans . With the GeoBlue Trekker Choice plan , you’ll get higher maximum payouts in all categories and pay a lower deductible ($100). However, note that this is still secondary coverage .

You’ll get unlimited access to telemedicine and coverage for trips up to 70 days in length . Additionally, coverage is available up to age 95, which isn’t offered on most other policies.

GeoBlue Trekker Essential

The GeoBlue Trekker Essential plan offers the same pros and cons as the Choice plan. The main differences are the lower maximum payout values and the higher deductible ($200 instead of $100). You also won’t get the Choice plan’s lost baggage and personal effects coverage, which can provide up to $500 per trip. Again, this secondary medical insurance policy is only valid on trips outside the U.S.

Trawick International Safe Travels Annual Basic

Trawick International Safe Travels Annual Basic page banner

Trawick International offers 2 annual plans, and the Safe Travels Annual Basic plan is more economical. You’ll have coverage for everything you expect in a trip insurance policy , such as 100% coverage for trip cancellation or interruption (up to a $2,500 annual maximum) and coverage for delays, lost luggage, delayed luggage, and even medical expenses. To make up for the lower cost of the plan, coverage limits are lower than what you’ll find elsewhere . However, if you want peace of mind while traveling, you can get it for a year and cover trips up to 30 days in length.

Trawick International Safe Travels Annual Deluxe

While Trawick International’s Safe Travels Annual Deluxe plan offers higher maximum coverage limits than the Basic plan, its maximum payouts for medical and evacuation benefits are lower than what you’ll find with competitors . Where this plan shines is in the coverage for change fees, lost deposits on tours, and coverage for lost items if an airline misplaces your luggage.

You’ll be covered for up to $300 per trip for prepaid excursions, up to 100% of your trip cost (with an annual maximum of $5,000) for trip cancellations or interruptions, and up to $150 per item and $750 per trip for personal effects. After signing up for a plan, you’ll also get a 10-day free look period.

Allianz Travel AllTrips Basic Plan

If you want an annual plan with a low price tag , this could be what you’re looking for. The Allianz Travel AllTrips Basic plan covers you for unlimited trips up to 45 days each over the course of a year. Coverage includes emergency medical, emergency medical evacuation, baggage loss and delays, travel delays, rental car theft and damage, and travel accident coverage.

However, there’s a fair list of exclusions from this plan . That includes trip cancellation, trip interruption, missed connections, and change fees. As the name implies, you’ll get basic coverage at a basic price.

Allianz Travel AllTrips Prime Plan

Allianz AllTrips annual plan options

The Allianz Travel AllTrips Prime option covers 365 days of trips, though the maximum trip length is just 45 days. While you’ll get coverage for all the standard travel insurance benefits, including trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical, delays, and baggage mishaps, there are limits you should know about with this plan.

The travel accident coverage, which applies to death or the loss of a limb, maxes out at $25,000 per trip, baggage delay maxes out at $200, and baggage loss or damage maxes out at $1,000. The maximum coverage for emergency medical is $20,000, and costs can exceed that quickly in a true emergency.

However, this is a decent option if you want a fair amount of coverage across numerous categories without a high price tag.

Allianz Travel AllTrips Executive Plan

For those worried about expensive business equipment or losing points and miles, this plan has you covered. On top of higher maximum payouts in categories such as trip cancellation, emergency medical transportation, or travel delays, you’ll also get rental car damage and theft coverage, change fee coverage, and reimbursement for renting business equipment if yours is lost, stolen, damaged, or delayed during a trip.

Moreover, you can be reimbursed up to $500 to cover fees for reinstating your points and miles if a covered trip is canceled or interrupted. The Allianz Travel AllTrips Executive plan also provides coverage for preexisting medical conditions if you meet certain criteria and buy at least 14 days before the first trip.

Allianz Travel AllTrips Premier Plan

Allianz AllTrips Premier start quote page

Allianz also has a customizable AllTrips Premier plan , allowing you to choose between several payout tiers for trip cancellation and interruption. You’ll pay more when choosing higher maximums, but this allows you to choose exactly what you want in coverage and not pay for more than you need. Another positive is coverage for preexisting medical conditions if you meet certain criteria and buy your policy at least 14 days before your first trip.

You’ll also get rental car damage and theft coverage , $500,000 of emergency medical transportation coverage, $50,000 of emergency medical, and coverage for travel delay expenses after a delay of 6 hours or more. The baggage delay coverage is up to $2,000, but it requires a delay of 12 or more hours. The maximum trip length allowed is 90 days.

AIG Travel Guard Annual Travel Insurance Plan

The AIG Travel Guard Annual Travel Insurance plan isn’t available to Washington state residents. Still, it provides coverage for trip interruption, trip delay, lost baggage, delayed baggage, and missed connections, as well as both medical and security evacuation, accidental death and dismemberment, and travel medical expenses. However, the coverage limit for dental is just $500, and the maximum coverage for travel medical expenses is just $50,000. Those are lower limits than other plans. Additionally, trip cancellation isn’t included.

However, Travel Guard has some strengths. Trip delay coverage applies for up to 10 days and requires a delay of just 5 hours, and the missed connection benefit applies after just 3 hours. You get a “free look” period of up to 15 days to cancel for a refund, so long as you haven’t started your trip or filed a claim. Maximum coverage for any particular trip is 90 days.

USI Affinity Voyager Annual Travel Insurance

ASI Affinity Voyager annual plan

USI Affinity’s Voyager plan has a Silver and Gold option , and pricing is easy to determine from the chart. Simply find your age bracket and the associated cost. The key differences between the plans are in the higher maximum payouts for nearly every coverage type with the Gold plan, other than emergency dental and accidental death and dismemberment. However, the Gold plan also includes coverage types the Silver plan doesn’t: political and natural disaster evacuation, airline ticket change fees, and trip interruption. However, trip cancellation isn’t included with either plan .

The maximum trip length is 90 days, and coverage for Silver and Gold plans lasts for 364 days. An unlimited number of international and domestic trips are covered, and you’re covered for trips as little as 100 miles from home. That’s a lower requirement than most other plans (which tend to require 150 miles).

Seven Corners Travel Medical Annual Multi-Trip

This plan is ideal for those who don’t live in the U.S., as other plans on this list are only available to U.S. residents and citizens. While the plan technically lasts for 364 days, Seven Corners’ Travel Medical Annual Multi-Trip plan is customizable. It lets you choose a maximum trip length of 30, 45, or 60 days and include or exclude coverage for the U.S. Note U.S. citizens and residents cannot add coverage for inside the U.S.

Seven Corners also provides coverage for travelers aged 14 to 75 years, though maximum payouts decrease in some categories for those aged 65 and older. If you receive medical care in the U.S., Seven Corners will pay 90% of the first $5,000 of covered expenses and 100% of the cost afterward. You’re covered 100% outside the U.S. Note that coverage doesn’t apply to your home country (which includes the U.S. if you’re a citizen, even if you live in another country) and isn’t available in Antarctica, Cuba, Iran, Israel, North Korea, Russia, Syria, or Ukraine.

A Plan That Didn’t Make Our List

We considered another plan. Here’s why this annual travel insurance policy didn’t make our “best of” list.

IMG Patriot Multi-Trip International : For trips inside the U.S., you may be on the hook for 20% of your medical expenses if you visit a provider outside IMG’s PPO network. Additionally, the maximum trip length is 30 days, and coverage limits are quite low in multiple categories. These include $50,000 for emergency medical evacuation and $10,000 for political evacuation, a maximum of $50 per item and $250 overall for lost luggage, a $100 maximum for dental treatment, and $25,000 for accidental death and dismemberment 24/7 coverage.

Annual travel policy plans vary considerably. Most provide secondary medical insurance, so you may need to submit to your other coverage (home healthcare plan, credit card insurance provider, etc.) first and then submit to your travel insurance provider for any remaining expenses or deductibles. If you won’t have other coverage, you may want to look for a plan that provides primary health coverage instead. Also, understand that most plans provide reimbursement, so you would pay out of pocket for overseas hospital visits and then submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement after the fact.

Annual travel insurance covers you for many trips over the course of a year (or sometimes 364 days). Rather than needing to buy a travel insurance policy for each trip separately — which can add up — you can buy a single policy that covers all your trips for the next year. It’s important to understand the terms of these policies, though. Some may require buying coverage in advance, such as 14 days before your first trip, while that requirement normally doesn’t exist on single-trip travel insurance.

It’s also important to note which types of trips and destinations are covered by your policy — and which aren’t. Look for how far from home you must travel to be covered and whether domestic trips are included. Moreover, consider what benefits you’re looking for. These can vary from medical-only to all the bells and whistles, such as baggage delay and medical evacuation. Once you know the type of coverage you want, you can find a policy or policies that align with your needs, helping you narrow down your options to conduct a more effective comparison.

How Annual Travel Insurance Works

Annual travel insurance works as an umbrella policy, covering all your trips during the policy period. You don’t need to inform the policy provider about each trip’s start and stop dates or destinations. You simply buy a policy, and then you’re protected for every trip that meets the conditions while your policy is in effect. Some regions may be excluded from coverage, and you may be subject to a maximum trip length.

Trip length is an important element to pay attention to. Annual travel insurance doesn’t cover you for a year-long trip. It covers you for a year for many small trips within that time, typically up to 30 or 45 days per trip. If you’re looking for a plan to cover you during a year-long trip to another country, you should look for specialized plans for study abroad, mission work, or other situations that apply to you. Traveling full-time? You may need a policy geared toward digital nomads and backpackers.

When To Buy an Annual Travel Insurance Policy

You should buy your annual travel insurance policy as soon as you know you’ll have multiple trips in the next year and determine that the cost of insuring each alone would be higher than that of a single multi-trip plan. What’s the break-even point on that cost? It depends on the coverage you want.

Considering that single-trip plans can sometimes be found for $10, yet an annual trip is likely to cost $150 or more per adult, you’d need 15 trips to justify the annual policy. However, that’s not really an apples-to-apples comparison, as a $10 basic travel insurance policy won’t provide as much coverage as you’re likely to find on even the most basic of annual policies.

It’s also not just about the number of trips you take but the types of trips, the complexity of the trips, and money at risk in nonrefundable costs. The more of these you foresee in your next year of travels, the more likely an annual plan would be good for you.

Couple reviewing financial documents

What Annual Travel Insurance Policies Do and Don’t Cover

We already highlighted that annual policies don’t cover traveling nonstop for a year due to their restrictions on the maximum trip length. Annual travel insurance policies also restrict how far you must travel for coverage to kick in. Driving to the next town over may be a trip in your kids’ eyes, but it’s probably not far enough for your travel insurance to kick in.

While coverage varies by policy, you’ll typically have coverage for sickness, accidental death and dismemberment, lost or delayed luggage, trip cancellation, and possibly injuries during skiing or snowboarding. However, it’s important to read the terms of each policy because coverage maximums and inclusions vary widely. Some policies only provide medical coverage, while others offer robust coverage across the board.

Understanding Trip Length Rules

Each policy specifies a maximum trip length. How trips longer than that are treated can vary. Most policies won’t cover any expenses related to a trip longer than the maximum trip length. Suppose you take a trip of 41 days on a policy with a maximum of 40 days. In that case, claims for delayed luggage or medical expenses may be rejected when the claim evaluator asks for your trip confirmation details.

However, GeoBlue covers the first 70 days of any particular trip. If something goes wrong during that time, you’re covered. You’re on your own for anything that happens on days 71 or beyond. Still, you’re covered on those first 70 days, despite taking a longer trip.

If you foresee long trips in the future, make sure you understand these rules.

For some travelers, yes, annual travel insurance is worth it. For others, it’s not.

Annual travel insurance is worth it when it costs less than what you’d pay to insure each trip individually. It’s also worth it if you think you might forget to purchase some of those individual policies throughout the year and would prefer to be done with them for another 365 days.

However, annual travel insurance isn’t worth it if you only take a few trips a year, they’re mostly domestic, and you don’t have major nonrefundable expenses. If you’re traveling within the U.S. with your standard health insurance policy in effect and you have credit cards that provide trip insurance for delays or cancellations, that coverage may be sufficient.

Family playing at the beach with snorkel

Costs will vary by your home state, age, and number of people included in the policy. Here are the “starting at” costs for our best annual travel insurance policies, sorted from lowest to highest:

Yes and no. Using a credit card to pay for your trip can provide some built-in protections. However, you should be mindful of annual maximums on any policy. You may run into limitations such as a maximum of 2 claims per 12-month period or similar exclusions. If you take many trips, that could be an issue.

To better understand what is and isn’t covered, check out our complete guide to credit card insurance .

To choose the right policy, look beyond the cost alone. Rather than immediately choosing the cheapest policy, find the policy or policies that provide the coverage types you want with payout maximums that cover your travel plans for the next year — both confirmed bookings and likely plans.

Consider your coverage needs. Will you be carrying expensive items such as scuba equipment for a trip to the Galapagos or top-notch camera lenses for a bird-watching tour in Papua New Guinea? How many extreme sports will you participate in?

Conversely, how many “never heard of this airline before” flights will you take to get off the beaten path? These are flights where you may be worried about cancelations that lead to extra costs or a misplaced suitcase.

Consider the types of trips you’ll take and the up-front money at risk if something goes wrong or you get delayed, then look at which plans align with your travels. From there, choose the best plan that aligns best with your needs, which may or may not be the cheapest one.

As an annual travel policy holder myself, I promise you that having the right plan is important when you wind up in a remote hospital in Tanzania with malaria.

Woman Sick in Bed Sneezing

Annual travel insurance isn’t right for everyone. However, it makes sense for those who travel often and could save money by taking out a single policy instead of many separate policies. It also makes sense if you’d prefer to avoid filling out paperwork numerous times throughout the year for each trip.

Annual travel insurance policies aren’t great for those who tend to travel closer to home, don’t have major nonrefundable travel expenses, or need to customize coverage for each trip because their travels tend to vary. For example, you might need different coverage for a backcountry ski trip with friends versus a 2-hour drive with your family.

Look at what annual policies do and don’t cover and see if these align with your travel goals and needs. Then, consider the prices for the plans that align well with your situation. After taking an informed look, you should have a good idea of whether an annual policy is right for your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is yearly travel insurance worth it.

For some, yes. For others, no. Annual travel insurance is worth it when the cost is less than what you’d pay to insure each trip separately or you would prefer to just sign up once then be done for a year. However, annual travel insurance isn’t worth it if you only take a few, mostly domestic, trips a year where your healthcare coverage works, and you don’t have major nonrefundable expenses.

How much does annual trip insurance cost?

Costs vary greatly depending on the type of coverage you want. Annual travel insurance plan costs range from $140 to $500 for a single person. If you take a lot of trips, the cost can be worth it over the course of a year, but each person’s situation is different.

When should I take out annual travel insurance?

You should buy your annual travel insurance policy as soon as you know you’ll have multiple trips in the next year and that the cost of insuring each alone would be higher than the cost of a single multi-trip plan. What’s the break-even point on that cost? It depends on the coverage you want. Look at the different types of coverage and your expected costs for insuring each trip separately, then see if it makes sense for you.

Does annual travel insurance automatically renew?

It varies by policy provider, but some companies have an auto-renew feature to ensure you don’t have gaps in coverage.

ABN AMRO: How to be well-insured in the Netherlands

ABN AMRO: How to be well-insured in the Netherlands

Did you know the average person in the Netherlands has eight different insurance policies? This make the Dutch some of the most insured people in the world!

Being insured in the Netherlands is not only relatively cheap, it's also considered common sense as Dutch people want to be well-protected against a wide variety of situations. As an expat living in the Netherlands it's important to take out insurance as it can protect you from unexpected and sometimes very high costs.

Why the Dutch find insurance essential

"Suppose a faulty washing machine floods our (or our downstairs neighbours’) apartment. Or we accidently spill coffee over a tablet - either our own or somebody else’s. Or imagine our child scratches the neighbours’ car, our home is burgled or we hit someone with our car or bicycle."

Accidents do happen and it’s best to avoid unpleasant surprises. With the right insurance none of these situations need be a problem.

How to be well-insured

So how can you be well-insured in the Netherlands?  ABN AMRO advises: "Do it like the Dutch!"

Dutch people may have a lot of insurance policies, but it's relatively cheap in the Netherlands, and in some instances it’s compulsory. With the same coverage as the locals you can rest easy as you'll be protected from any unexpected or costly situations.

Insurance types in the Netherlands

Besides compulsory health insurance, here are the most common insurance types in the Netherlands: › Building insurance (for owners) › Liability insurance › Car insurance (compulsory for owners) › Home contents insurance › Legal insurance › Travel insurance

Insurance types like liability and home contents are considered essential and are not expensive. Good liability insurance, for example, costs only a few euros a month, and full home contents insurance is around 10 euros a month. So for a small sum you can insure yourself against pontentially sky-high costs.

What insurance do you need? Visit  ABN AMRO How to be well-insured  to learn more and easily take out policies for yourself.

An example of good insurance coverage

Karin (42) and Michel (44) de Vries and their two sons have several different kinds of insurance with ABN AMRO  to cover their property and lifestyle: "We are well insured and that gives us peace of mind."

"Our boys are always playing football and have been known to occasionally break a window. Fortunately, we have good liability insurance. And of course we also have home contents insurance. If there’s a burglary, fire, storm or water damage, for example, then we’re covered.

Our car is only a year old and is covered by all-risk insurance. So whatever damage might happen, we won’t have any hassle. Every summer we take the kids to France for three weeks and in the winter we go skiing in Austria. Our multi-trip travel insurance is ideal for this and also covers our weekends away.

We also have insurance for legal expenses in case we we get into a dispute with our employers or neighbours, and naturally we also have health insurance - but everyone must have that."

Insurance in the Netherlands: The Dutch obsession with insuring themselves

Anna Chow

You might not realize it, but the Dutch are absolutely obsessed with insurance. There are a variety of types of insurance you can get in the Netherlands.

If you think that by insurance I mean the mandatory health insurance any residence of the country needs to possess, car insurance because you drive, or life insurance because you have a mortgage, then buddy, you’re missing a very important part of the Dutch experience : living your life to the fullest without a thing to worry because there is always an insurance coverage for every aspect of your life. A typical Dutch person would be contributing to the 6 or 7 types of insurance every month easily.

Insurances in the Netherlands

Insurance as an instrument to protect people from financial lost might have been invented by the Babylons and popularized by American insurance giants but the no one utilize insurances as fully as the Dutch.

abn amro travel insurance review

Here are few types of other very popular insurances in the Netherlands you’re probably not yet subscribed to:

A ‘Continuous’ Travel Insurance – Not the ones you buy on Booking.com

Most Dutch people do not need to buy the extra insurance coverage when they book their trips overseas because they would already possess a ‘continuous’ travel insurance. It means that they are covered 365 days of the year regardless where they go. You can use it to get financial compensation when your trips need to be cancelled for valid reasons, for delays with flights, for baggage lost, or help with medical expense should you need it in the foreign country. For people living in a small country like the Netherlands, they certainly go out of the country a lot. Travel insurance is almost a must for them.

The terms might be different for each insurer’s offers but many times it would also cover that of a partner. So if you’re dating or married to a Dutch person , you might be able to save a few bucks!

In addition, many Visa card companies offered travel insurance as well. If you’ve been ignoring all the communications they send to you in the mails, it might be a good time to check them before your travels. This kind of insurance always come in handy, since we have so many vacation days and holiday money living and working in the Netherlands.

Home Content Insurance – Not the ones to get you a mortgage

Don’t confuse ‘Home Insurance’ with ‘Home Content Insurance’. The distinction might be clear in English, but when you were shown words like ‘Woonverzerkering’ and ‘Inboedelverzekering’, you’re entitled to feel a bit lost. For how common homeownership is in the Netherlands, many people have home insurance as it is required as a mortgage against fire, water, storm damage or burglary (frequently called the ‘Opstalverzekering’).

The second kind, the home content insurance, however, was to protect the content of your house, like your laptop and your television. Even renters should have them, because God knows your landlords would not have bought it for your own stuff.

Here is a graphics, in Dutch about the difference between ‘Home Content’ and ‘Home’ insurance.

vergoeding-inboedel-en-opstalverzekering

Legal Insurance – A lawyer can be your new best friends in a complex world

48% of Dutch have legal insurance. If you’re British, you are probably also familiar with it since 40% of British have legal insurance as well. However, the concept of legal insurance is not as prevalent in rest of the world as it is in Britain and the Netherlands.

It is possible to buy many many kinds of insurances in the Netherlands, but if you don’t have someone there to represent your best interest in all situations, then you are also as good as screwed. Many people, for example, when faced with a potential unemployment situation, instead of thinking of unemployment insurance,  would get legal insurance to cover any legal fees that might incur should they need to sue their company for firing them if they believe they have good rationale to challenge the decision of the company in front of the court of law.

Dental Insurance – Not included in your typical health insurance

If you ask me, I think it is super weird that the health of your teeth and gums were not included in the typical Dutch health insurance. (Some do offer them). But I suppose this is in line with the world’s discrimination of dentist not being a real doctor. We all deserved to pay more for our bad behaviors towards the dentist profession, I guess. (That, or the healthcare system in the Netherlands isn’t so great after all).

Here you can insure your mouth:

Disability Insurance – Because 1 in 10 Dutch has reported to suffer from disability

1,8 million Dutch people are estimated to have a disability, which includes anything from loss of motor ability, visual and hearing capacity and sub-optimal mental health. If you are disabled and could not or could only partially work, then you would suffer a loss in income. The disability insurance would help you through the period, supplementing other disability benefits you would receive from your employer or the government.

The amount of registered disability in the Netherlands is not particularly high compared to the rest of Europe at 13% in 2011, while countries like Portugal (17,2%), France (21,1%) and the all-time highest Austria (23,5%) have higher percentages of disabled persons due to various health and social-economic reasons. If you come to think of it, one in ten people would need some form of disability assistance in the Netherlands, and that’s kind of a lot, especially if you came from countries like Turkey, India or China where disability benefits from government agencies or their employers are often minimal, and you would consider limping to work even when you have suffered a horrendous but non-life threatening accident a triumphant feat and a display of loyalty and bravery.

The graphics below show how the Dutch are spending a lot more money on disability than OECD average, and the study’s benchmark country, the U.S. With Dutch’s disability benefits reformed, the percentage has dropped significantly, and this would mean that people would need to be more prepared for the financial impact on their lives in this kind of situation themselves, perhaps by the purchase of a disability insurance.

Motor Insurance – Not the same as car insurance

I added in this one because the Dutch distinguishes between ‘Auto’ (car) insurance and ‘Motor’  ( motorcycle) insurance. If you have both types of vehicles, you will need both types of insurance, and they fall under different Dutch names because picking insurance for automotive vehicles is not complicated enough. Surprise, surprise.

Here you can get some car insurances:

And here the motor ones:

Liability insurance – To brake a stranger’s property in freedom

As careful as you might be, you – or your children – may always cause damage to e.g. a neighbor (think about the typical ball through the windowpane). The liability insurance protects a person or entity from claims initiated by another party. Although there are people in the Netherlands who think this is a compulsory insurance, it is NOT.

Damage caused by motor vehicles is not covered by this insurance. Almost all insurance companies offer this Aansprakelijkheidsverzekering, AVP (Personal Liability Insurance).

Smartphone Theft and Damage Insurance – Because you might as well

If you are insured in almost all aspects of your life already, how could you not insure the most important device in your life? Many telecommunication companies offer smartphone theft and damage insurances, because God knows we are careless animals that like to drop our phone into the toilet once in a while. Theft though, on the other hand, is not a serious issue nowadays given the advance in financing scheme and manufacturing technologies, making these devices cheaper every day.

Do I need an insurance for the insurances??

At this point of the article, you might start panicking on how much money you will actually need to shell out to live a ‘well-insured’ Dutch experience. Interesting enough, because how many Dutch people are buying these insurances, the average premium for these policies is often less than ten euros each (with the exception of health and car insurance). You may find out your premiums by using services like Independer.nl which are really good tools for clueless expats like you and me.

What do you have insurance for? Let us know in the comments below.

This is the worst bank I ever had to…

This is the worst bank I ever had to deal with. Takes 2 weeks to receive a simple card plus another 3 days to receive 3 more envelopes with pin, 18th century token the size of a brick and some activation code. Except that they do not send everything, so for the activation code you need to go to the bank and wait an hour or schedule appointment weeks later. Finally got the card activated after two visits to the bank but as a month passed I forgot the pin, so now card is blocked. Customer Service is more like an appointment scheduling service as they cannot do anything over the phone and the app is useless if the card is not activated. Another visit to the bank now. I only need this rubbish card as it's Maestro and it seems that this is the only type accepted in most shops, which is unbelievable for such developed country. I should have gone to other bank, but I was stupid enough to transfer funds before activating the card...

Unethical banking practice

Unethical banking practice, in my view. They sold my Apple shares without my approval during 2020, in the thick of Covid. Then they closed my account - also without making direct contact with me - it was clearly not important enough to them. So imagine my shock when, on a good trading day, I tried to access my account in order to transact (sell my shares and pay an account or two online) only to find myself blocked from my own account! (Understand, these people have had my phone and email details for decades, details which never changed!) Long story short, whatever you do, BE VERY VERY CAREFUL about signing up with ABN. They will drop you when and if it suits them, Covid or no Covid, without the courtesy of a whatsapp or email. I do not enjoy trashing a service provider on an open platform - so I wrote to the bank directly expressing my reaction to their poor service standards. Their response was offhand at best. My worst banking experience EVER in 5 decades. I wouldn't even give them one star .....

They're ruining my life. Stay away from ABN AMRO.

STAY AWAY FROM ABN AMRO. I had my debit card and phone stolen at the beginning of June. I have since tried to recover access to my Internet Banking, but the customer service has been first unresponsive, then they made me send a physical form to their office to request a debit card, and after two months and a half I am still locked out of my account. Apparently, the form went lost or they forgot about it, because when I called them a week ago, there was no trace of it. I submitted everything again. I have sent dozens of emails, talked to multiple customer support agents and so on. Today I made another phone call and I was informed I am going to receive my debit card in two weeks, not one as they previously told me. Meanwhile, my landlord has not received payments for two months and is threatening to sue me or sell my debt to a debt collection agency, which will make the debt higher. Finally, they are trying to prevent me from filing a formal complaint, which I believe to be illegal. Being an ABN AMRO customer is a nightmare. Stay away from them for your sanity.

Solid experience with a few annoyances

After a lot of research, I picked ABN AMRO because they seemed like the bank that was the best for expats in the Netherlands. Signing up was a bit of a hassle, since none of the automated features worked for me. The automated features don't work for expats, and I wish they would make that clear when signing up. I was able to make an appointment over the phone in English, which was amazing. Everyone I spoke to on the phone was helpful and made me feel confident that if I had a banking issue in the future, that I'd be able to fix it even with my limited knowledge of Dutch. The meeting at the bank to set up the account was also entirely in English, which was fantastic. The only complaints I have about ABN AMRO are 1) the e.identifier, which is just an annoying calculator like appliance used for online banking and 2) that ABN AMRO does not work with Google Pay. Those are pretty minor complaints in the grand scheme of things. Overall, I've been happy with this bank and would absolutely recommend it to expats in NL.

ABSOLUTELY HORRENDOUS

ABSOLUTELY HORRENDOUS My son has a young saving account that his grandparents set up for him - he would like to use some of this money so we called the bank and they said it was a SIMPLE process - he had to open up a current account, transfer the money into it and then he would be able to withdraw money - but because we have moved abroad the process might take a little longer which we could understand - we have now been involved in this SIMPLE process since the beginning of April and still no further on - they sent him a card (apparently it takes 3 weeks to send a card from Holland to another European country - I didnt realise the NL post was so bad) and then you have to wait for the activation code which is another week - then we think we have it and then the activation code is incorrect - so the process starts all over again - when we ask to speak to a manager there is never anyone available - I have NEVER experienced anything like it - I dont know how they can call themselves a bank as it is completely incompetent ........

bank completely locks me out of my account after my debit card expired While I was in a foreign country While I was unable to travel due to COVID They offer to send new debit card which constantly get "lost" in the mail. I ask them to send at least registered mail so i could have a tracking code or something like DHL which I'd be happy to pay for it and they refuse. ITS MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY One year of waiting in vain, completely locked out of my account!!!! Every time I call an agent, same story "please wait another 2 weeks", we can send a new debit card but we'll cancel the one in transit. ONE YEAR WAITING FOR THIS NONSENSE Half way that year, suddently I get a letter they won't serve customers outside the Netherlands and they plan to close my account! For what I trust ABN AMRO with my money!! Then they want all communication going by slug mail which takes months during covid. So of course my statement was delayed and they end up not processing it. Then they start charging me XX EUR monthly fees for foreign customers without even an email or phone call. OH BUT WE SEND YOU A LETTER TO YOUR DUTCH ADDRESS - f**** ABN AMRO

ABN AMRO DELFT (Netherlands) 1. They very few ATM machine in Delft (Near TU Libary, near the ABN bank and near the SUBWAY City center Delft). But guess what it's been closed for more then 2-3 years and they don't even fix it. Ask any one in Delft ABN AMRO ATM is joke! 2. They will push you take NL Bicycle insurance for 1-2 EURO/month when opening the account for expat even if you dont what it ! 3. There Mortage is so amazing they don't mention there the max amount an indivudual can pay usually between 23k EURO to 35K EURO per year, more then that bank will ask for additional money for you trying to close your mortage! Expat trying to make early payment with Delft ABN AMBRO can't be done. Cause of there loop for draining from the poor people! 4. Currently, it's not even possible submit cash at the Delft Bank! You have to goto find and ATM machine which will not be Delft cause they write there generic message "sory deza automate machine niet working" pathetic. So you run around to find an ATM which is 30km from Delft around 30 min drive. Wow so nice ABN AMRO Delft. You need a kass and boterham trophy for sure!

The worst bank in the Netherlands

Let me start with the fact that I have been told upon my arrival to the Netherlands that this is EXPAT oriented bank. This is the biggest crap I have heard in my life. They have the worst customer service I have ever witnessed. They simply do not care about you as customer. My wife was trying to open account. First they sent somebody completely strange to our house to check signature not to mentioned he was stranger and incompetent. After his visit my wife still had to go to bank in person with small daughter (1,6 years old). They verified her and now after nearly 4 months, yes 4 months they did not even get back to her even though in the meantime she called to ask what is going on. They told her they will call her...…..:) this is unheard of. Now I have applied for loan and this is the biggest pain i had to go through. They keep asking for additional documents, approvals and verifications. And when you think this idiotism will be over and they will approve you for silly amount they come back with claims they need documents where there is clearly written your BSN number ( i have explained to them that I am expat and my documents do not have BSN). After 18 months will this atrocious customer service i am finally giving up and changing bank. This is warning to all the expats please do not open account with them. Please DO NOT..

This bank needs to close down

After 27 years, I moved my entire relationship to a real bank. ABN has fallen so far, and they need to be shuttered. Where to begin?: For 5 yrs, during one of the busiest shopping days of the year, I could always count on at least one major service outage. This was due largely to very poor choices in IBM and Backbase to run their ops and digital banking, which they are still paying for today. During my second mortgage with them in 2016, they used an appraiser they knew would low ball my home value, so I needed to pay 10s of thousands more at closing. They also fed me so many different versions of closing docs I lost track...including 3 the day of closing! 6 months later I paid for my own appraisal and brought it to the bank. They knew they were in trouble and offered to pay for both mine and the original that was wrong to begin with. Only once you catch them raping you do they back down... I work with nearly every major bank in Europe, and bank with 5 global banks. ABNAMRO no longer qualifies as either, and I can say they have the worst service, product offerings and rates of any bank I know. Dutch arrogance has penetrated throughout this bank, and they speak to you as if you don't know banking, but it is actually they who struggle to understand just how far behind they are compared to leading banks today. Don't waste your time, and don't risk your money...stay away and let them fade away.

Impersonal and unwilling to help

The only reason I opened an account with ABN AMRO was because I could do so before receiving my BSN number in the Netherlands. The fact you need the e-identifier device to do essentially anything is very stupid and unpractical. Last week an ATM in Portugal ate my ABN-Amro debit card. I contacted ABN-Amro and they informed me they had blocked my card as 'a precaution' as I have used an ATM within the last month where other customers have had their card skimmed. They did not inform me of this. Now they have sent a new card to my address in NL but of course I am in Portugal now for work. It is being sent to me by a friend however I cannot access any services until I have the physical card. I need to make international transfers and after being on the phone with them, verifying my identity they are unwilling to help. I was very rudely told "I'm sorry this is not how the system works you need to wait until you received the card. You should have updated your address". ... You should have informed me you are blocking my card? I am in an extremely vulnerable situation now with no access to money and I am extremely upset that i am paying for a service, for them to hold my money, but not being able to get any assistance. Situations like this have happened before where I was told when wanting to deposit large sums of cash, that I must do it at an ATM in the street, even though I explained I felt uncomfortable doing so and wanted someone to help me. Please avoid this bank if you want to be treated like a human.

How road trip insurance works

How to choose between road trip travel insurance companies, best plans for road trip travel insurance, other tips for road trip travel insurance, top cards with travel insurance for road trips, road trip travel insurance recapped.

There’s nothing quite like breezing down a highway with the windows down, the wind in your hair and a cooler full of sodas in the back seat. Whether you’re traveling alone or enjoying a road trip with friends or family, you’ll want to be sure that you’re covered with travel protections on your drive. This is as true whether you're embarking on a classic American road trip — like U.S. Route 66 — are or braving the roadways in a foreign country, in your own car or a rented vehicle.

Let’s take a look at road trip travel insurance, how it works and the best plans for auto travel insurance to suit your needs.

Road trips aren't immune to disruptions, and road trip insurance works similarly to travel insurance . Most plans require purchase before your trip begins and cover your prepaid expenses.

For rental cars

Not all third-party travel insurance policies automatically include coverage for a rental vehicle. Seek out plans that provide rental car insurance specifically — or book your car with a credit card that offers these specific protections .

Rental car travel insurance policies generally protect against damage to the rental vehicle only. Causes not within your control, such as collision, theft, vandalism, windstorm, fire, hail or flood damage are typically covered.

Because of the limited scope of rental car insurance, know that you may be on the hook if you’re liable for damage to other vehicles or if there’s bodily injury.

When picking up your rental car, you will likely be offered the insurance sold by the rental car company at the counter, typically called a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW). You can decline this protection if you have sufficient coverage elsewhere (e.g., via a third-party policy or a credit card).

For your personal vehicle

Getting road trip insurance for your own vehicle isn't as common as travel insurance for rental cars , but it can still be a valuable consideration depending on your situation. For instance, access to roadside assistance can provide peace of mind if you are driving for long stretches in rural areas.

Finally, road tripping doesn’t end at driving a car. Other trip protections you may consider including in a travel insurance policy include medical evacuation, trip cancellation insurance, trip interruption coverage and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance . This is true whether you opt to drive your own vehicle or rent one for your trip.

» Learn more: How to find the best travel insurance

With several travel insurance companies out there, it can be difficult to narrow down the one you really need. Before buying, always get quotes from multiple businesses.

This is because coverage levels and prices can vary dramatically. Insurance aggregators such as InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth (a NerdWallet partner) allow you to generate multiple quotes at once, plus they include filters for sorting so you can find the right policy for you.

Here are a few things to consider when looking for road trip insurance:

Whether you’re renting a car.

Where you're traveling.

Whether you already have car insurance.

What types of coverage you’re interested in.

If you’re also planning on flying, cruising or using a ferry.

How long you’ll be gone.

The cost of the plan.

To figure out the best road travel insurance, we combed a variety of insurance providers to check out their offerings.

Our quotes were built using a hypothetical 37-year-old from California taking a road trip throughout the United States. The total trip time was 15 days, and the total trip cost was $2,700. Here were the top contenders.

Waiting for more than 2 years for a solution!

I informed ABN Amro more than 2 years ago that my company changed the status from ZZP to BV and asked for 2 new cards. After numerous calls during these years with no resolution, being sent from one department to another, I finally receive a letter in which they are asking me to open a new bank account or else they will be blocking the current account despite my previous failed attempts! I have been trying to do so online, via phone for 2 consecutive days as well with no luck! Keep getting errors again and again. Services are becoming ridiculously expensive with 0 quality, trust, accountability. Worst experience, most unprofessional hires ever.

Good afternoon, Sorry to read that you keep having these issues! I want to invite you to submit a complaint, so we can resolve this as soon as possible. You can file the complaint online (https://www.abnamro.nl/en/commercialbanking/about-abnamro/complaints/index.html) or by calling us on 088-2262626. Rob

Story of a happy customer!

I’ve been a customer of ABN AMRO since 2018 and never had an issue that was not solved in timely manner. I am using different products like insurance, mortgage, savings, and current account. I thought they deserve a review to appreciate their good work. I must admit that I have not used any other bank as I never had to! So my review is a bit biased! The only issue I’ve seen a close friend had with ABN AMRO was for a foreign student who came to netherlands and because of my suggestion he just decided to use ABN AMRO. Unfortunately the verification phase of the registration took more than 2 months and my friend just went ahead and opened an account with ING in few days or so. But as I said, I am happy with them and love their support. They are always helpful and despite some lengthy processes they do their best to help.

Good afternoon, we appreciate it that you took the time to send a message about our service. Elvira

What a terrible experience.

I have never on my life used a more outdated anti user firendly bank. An absurd plastic edentifier, several printed letters with different codes, pins and numbers. A terrible UX/UI website and app. The only reason I open a bank account here was for a mortgage with another company, but there is absolutely no way in life I would recommend anyone using this terrible bank.

A continuous and horrendous experience…

A continuous and horrendous experience with this bank. I have bank accounts in a number of countries and ABN Amro is by far the worst - customer service is non-existent, and you can spend an eternity trying to get through to them on the telephone. Once through you are met with a barrage of hostility and unhelpfulness. Sending an email doesn't help either - the response is "We will contact you within 3 days" - 14 days later and still no response. I can't spend any time suggesting how they can resolve the number of issues ABN Amro has - it will take a major overhaul of everything they do and stand for. Goodbye ABN Amro - I'm glad that I will not have to deal with you anymore.

Sometimes their system automatically…

Sometimes their system automatically blocking my transfers, but the Support is very helpfull and they always solving such a small issues for me within 10-15 minutes. the estimated awaiting time on the line is quite long, but I always know I will reach some good person who will not leave me!

Date of experience : September 01, 2023

Hello wop hoekstra, thank you for your message. We appreciate it that you took the time to provide us with feedback. Elvira

The customer service is horrible…

I’m thinking about changing banks. I don’t want to deal with them anymore after a series of bad encounters and errors. The last straw was - they refused to give me an appointment to get the Bank reference letter because it can be done online. But the page online didn’t work because of a technical error. It was a vicious circle where no one wanted to help and was saying “no appointment”, “not possible “, “ try later”. I couldn’t get my visa because of the absence of this letter in time. But there have been so many more situations with Abn Amro. The question I have - does no-one in the administration care about the reputation of the bank?

I think 1 star is even too much

I think 1 star is even too much! The KYC team keep harassing customers. I understand that they have to do their job and comply with the regulation. But I have had my account with this bank for many years, and receive some money from the same account of my family. All of sudden, they started to ask questions. At first, I was corporative and provided informations, till them started to asked irrelevant information, invading people's privacy, increase their mental stress by treat people like criminals. It almost feels like they are just keep emailing and calling customers so they make the Dutch government KPI of "making efforts to know you customers", just to avoid being fined by the government again. Please, leave the normal people alone. It's time to switch to a different bank!

Good morning Susan, Thank you for sharing your experience with our KYC team with us and sorry to read that you’ve experienced the contact with my colleagues this way. Although we have a legal obligation to act as a gatekeeper, you still may expect us to be helpful and decent in our communication towards you. I will make sure that your experience reaches our KYC department. Did you already file an official complaint on this matter? Worst bank in NL

Worst bank in NL. They act like the police and send emails and ask questions and basically accuse their clients of being criminals. Then after you explain the questioned transaction, they just say, "Ok, we accept your response" Like they are a friggin Judge. Total Sh!t Shop. Avoid at all costs. Rabo is nice btw.

Bank is useless, worst banking system on earth. They’ll instant transfer dummy payments internationally then the main transfer will go missing, hate them with all my heart. Do not use it!

Awful Banking App - what an involution!

Awful Banking App! Initially, there was an amazing app (Grip) working perfectly and providing a lot of insight information on your money. Then they removed it by saying that those functions would have been included in the main AMN AMRO app. First of all, they made this switch in the middle of December which is the moment when the app is mostly needed (along with July/August). Second of all, they never made these changes. So now, we ended up having a disgusting app that does not even tell you how much money you spend in a month and how much money you have earned. We passed from having the best-ever app to the worst one! Congrats ABN for the involution! Opposite to what dutch culture taught me.

Date of experience : August 03, 2023

Good afternoon, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I can imagine that it takes some getting used to that the GRIP app has stopped. The first functions 'Predictions' and 'Fixed Charges' are now available to all customers in the ABN AMRO app. We are working hard to further expand our functionalities, but unfortunately we have to deal with various dependencies. As a result, we can't yet say exactly when more new functions will become available in the app. In any case, we aim to further expand 'Fixed Charges' with the option to hide certain costs. It will also become possible to cancel subscriptions via the ABN AMRO App. Check this link for an explanation of the new functions within the app: https://www.abnamro.nl/en/personal/themes/overview-and-insight/insight.html I would advise you to keep a close eye on our website for the latest developments and news within our app. Jeremy

Abn AMRO seems to have really lost any…

Abn AMRO seems to have really lost any idea of customer service. And at the same time nearly doubled fees for investment portfolios. I have been a client of their private banking for 15 years and have finally moved most money out as the service is terrible. At my new investment bank I feel valued, get fantastic service, pay much lower fees, get nearly twice as much interest in my cash. Safra Sarasin. And Bunq is so much better for a bank account. I see no future for abn amro. They are annoyed at me as I have taken money out and now cannot even get them to close accounts that I cannot do myself online. My private banker and his assistant ignore my emails. It’s simply unbelievably bad.

Horrible experience, cant even manage a simple task!!!

What a horrible experience we have with this bank. My grandmother moved and wanted the new bank card send to her new adress. We are living in Germany. It is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE for this bank to manage even the simple tasks. They are not able to answer our e-mails, nor can they help us via phone. My grandmother hasn´t access to her bank AT ALL since MONTH!!!!!! She isn´t able to get any money from her bank account!!! It is horrible. She is a customer at this bank for years now and isn´t able to get access to her money??? She needs a new card but they wont send it to her and can´t help us in the process. We are beyond angry!

Date of experience : February 20, 2024

Good morning Sophie, I'm sorry to hear that your grandmother don't have access to her bank account and she is unable to apply for a debit card. There may be several reasons why applying for the debit card is not possible at this time. For example because her new German address is not known to us. To help your grandmother and find a solution, we need to speak to your grandmother. Hopefully she's able to call us via 0031-102411720 (with your help or help of another relative). Kind regards, Elvira ABN AMRO Webcare

Tragic experience, discrimination and leaving foreign student without funds.

I am an international student from Russia, and the amount of stress and problems that this bank put me through is impossible to describe. Due to sanctions, my parents are forced to send me money using a large crypto exchange. One day after the transfer, my account was blocked and without the opportunity to send any preliminary evidence, they took 924 euros from me, accused me of participating in fraud and added me to the internal register. When I called, they could leave me waiting on the line for an hour, and then simply hang up. If you expect fair and non-discriminatory treatment, choose another bank. To this day I am waiting for a decision regarding the funds taken by the bank from my account. I seen all of these bad reviews and…

I seen all of these bad reviews and thought it best to add mine. I've never had a bad experience within the 4 years I've banked with them. The only pain is applying for a loan. The process takes too long, but I've always found them friendly and helpful.

Date of experience : January 10, 2024

Good afternoon, thank you for your review. Always nice to receive compliments! A loan request may take a few days to be processed. For the status, it is best to start a chat conversation in the app. You enter securely and my colleague can then view the status of the application. Jeremy

Super slow, Need to phone to get them to work.

Extremely slow to process anything, app is very limited and just sends you straight to their website for most things. Took me 4 months to start a debit account, as an expat needing a bank account for my salary this was extremely stressful. subsequently asking for a credit card took a few more weeks as well even after finally having an account. Creating an account took more than 10 phone calls, 2 video calls and numerous emails. After disclosing my full financial information since 2003 I still had to give them more information before they had enough to review, along with answering the same questions multiple times to each new person who got handed my case. Go with Bunq, as an expat took a day to get a debit card and account, app has more functionality and actually looks nice.

Worst banking experience ever!

First of when I opened my account their employee has added insurance I haven't agreed on. Also I was supposed to get all letters to use the banking in 5 days, it is already 2 weeks and one is still missing. I have called them they were complaining on post, but haven't send it yet. Choose any other bank, I am switching asap!
