Passengers left waiting at Austin's airport after rare FAA ground stop

People wait in lines with their luggage at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Most flights out of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) were delayed Wednesday after the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily halted all air traffic in the United States.

ABIA had 235 delayed departures and 38 cancelations, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware . Airport officials say ABIA has been averaging 250 departures a day in January.

The FAA asked airlines to stop all departures Wednesday morning while the federal agency worked to fix a communication system used by pilots, leaving the skies over Austin unusually empty for a weekday morning.

A map view of flights in the sky around Central Texas. Only a couple planes are visible over the green satellite view of Earth.

The ground stop was lifted just before 8 a.m., but ABIA officials said people should expect delays as airlines work to clear a backlog of flights.

Travelers at Austin's airport were mystified.

"When did the FAA get all of the sudden crazy like this, everything getting canceled?" asked AJ Mancabelli, a guitarist with the Austin band Thunderosa that was heading to Brussels for a European tour.

The band scrambled to get to the airport after American Airlines rebooked them on an earlier flight. Then the rebooked flight was delayed.

"Leaves us more time to sit at the bar," Mancabelli said.

The FAA has not explained what caused the computer meltdown. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said there was "no evidence of a cyberattack at this point," but added the U.S. Department of Transportation would "conduct a full investigation into the causes."

ABIA spokesperson Bailey Grimmett said people should still check in for their flights and keep an eye on their status through their airline.

"We are still recommending people come to the airport to check in as regular just because we don't know how this will impact flights," she said.

The largest carrier out of ABIA is Southwest, which claims 41% of ticketed seats out of Austin. American Airlines is second with 26%.

Southwest said it would rebook all customers on the next available flight at no extra cost. People who can't travel because their flight was canceled or delayed significantly can get a refund in accordance with the airline's customer service plan .

On Wednesday morning, some delayed passengers were lounging by the ticket counters, taking the slowdown in stride.

"What can you do? Stuff happens," said Austin-area resident Petra Lawrence, whose 11 a.m. flight to North Carolina was delayed by at least an hour. "I'm used to it."

FAA grounds flights globally, causing delays and cancellations at ABIA

A ll flights from some of the United States' biggest airlines including Delta, United and American Airlines were grounded early Friday morning due to a communications issue, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

According to the FAA, the ground stop impacts all flights from the airlines, regardless of their destination.

As of now, it is unclear how long the ground stop will last, but the FAA suggested an update would be available by 5 a.m. ET.

The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport tells CBS Austin, a high number of delays and cancellations are expected for flights this morning but as of now, it's unclear what that number is.

ABIA is asking passengers to check their flight status often this morning, as it may change.

The ABIA also wants to stress, this is a global outage that isn't just affecting the Austin-area.

According to CNN, this airline grounding comes after a significant Microsoft outage brought Frontier Airlines to a standstill for hours on Thursday – though the ground stop for those airlines has since been lifted.

Other competitors including Allegiant and SunCountry also said they were having difficulties, including with their booking, check-in and trip-managing functions online, also according to CNN.

This is a developing story, we will post updates as they come in.

Biden in Austin: Austinites advised to expect airport travel, traffic, public transport delays

Video: biden arrives at austin airport.

President Joe Biden arrived at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport ahead of his keynote address at the LBJ Presidential Library

AUSTIN, Texas - President Joe Biden will be in Austin today (7/29) and it is expected to impact commutes and travel plans.

AUS officials are warning travelers to be prepared for minor impacts on operations because of the president's visit.

AUS officials say they are expecting traffic and flight delays of 15 to 30 minutes leading up to and during President Biden’s landing and take-off.

According to AUS, when Biden touches down in Austin, there will be a temporary ground stop and ramp freeze, which will likely cause minor flight delays for those scheduled to arrive or depart at the time. This will repeat when he leaves.

The City of Austin shared on Sunday that Austinites should expect traffic delays and potential street closures between the airport and the LBJ Library on Monday.

The city advises drivers to:

  • Allow extra drive time
  • Use public transportation options
  • Avoid parking along the route

CapMetro says that due to the impact on traffic, there will be service delays from Monday morning to Monday evening across Central Austin. The transit agency advises riders to expect possible delays on all routes that service:

  • Downtown Austin
  • UT Austin campus
  • East Austin
  • South Austin

Riders can check CapMetro's Trip Planner  for updates and are advised to use alternate routes if possible.

Estimated Wait Times For Today

* Wait times are estimates, subject to change, and may not be indicative of your experience.

How Early Should I get To Austin Airport

Probably early than you would expect. The airport itself has previously issued press release before holidays that passengers should arrive for domestic flights at least two and half hours early and three hours for international flights to allow enough time for parking, checking luggage and TSA processing.

Austin Airport security wait times have been increasingly frustrating travelers and even causing missed flights. As is the case at DFW Airport , AUS throughput is recovering from the pandemic much faster than most airports with flight numbers even surpassing 2019 levels with the major carriers add new routes in late 2021 and into 2022. Staffing shortages have also contributed to longer security wait times at Austin Airport, so much so that mandatory overtime had been initiated for TSA agents to cover busy periods. To find out how busy Austin Airport is right now please view the estimated wait times above.

An additional checkpoint with 3 new TSA security lines was earmarked for the end of 2021 to ease congestion.

A faulty track between Tunrham Green and Richmond is causing grey hairs – and it is not even rush hour yet.

London Underground District line is partially suspended between Turnham Green and Richmond, while there is no service on the Overground between Willesden Junction and Ricmond, the latest TfL status update shows.

Elsewhere, a crash on the M6 near Coventry is causing delays southbound between junctions J3 and J2, with normal traffic conditions expected by 5pm.

The smash happened southbound between junctions J3 and J2 at lunchtime.

Drivers should prepare for 10-minute delays in the area, National Highways alert says.

Traffic delays after cyclist is hit by lorry driver

A London Air Ambulance helicopter landed on Parliament Square after a cyclist was hit by a lorry driver.

Roads were blocked at the Parliament Square in London after a cyclist was hit by a lorry driver.

One woman was taken to a trauma centre, and while her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, they may be ‘potentially life-changing,’ the Met Police said.

The crash happened just moments after Sir Keir Starmer’s car convoy had gone through the Parliament gates, an eyewitness claimed.

One witness said on X: ‘Not looking good. All this traffic was held for Starmer coming in. First vehicle released went over cyclist.’

Thames Water comments on burst pipe incident at Victoria

All lines have now reopened after the burst water main on Ebury Street forced trains to slow down at London Victoria.

However, delays and cancellations are likely until 11.30am as services recover from the disruption.

Journeys could take 20 minutes longer than usual, National Rail said.

A spokesperson for Thames Water told Metro.co.uk: ‘We were alerted to a suspected burst near Victoria Station earlier this morning.

‘Our engineers are attending Ebury Street where they will work to locate the leak before carrying out the necessary repairs.

‘We are very sorry to local residents and commuters for any disruption caused during this time.’

Major disruption on trains from Bristol

CrossCountry and Great Western Railway trains have been hit by severe delays and cancellations after an emergency incident between Taunton and Bristol Temple Meads.

All lines have been closed as a result.

Passengers should brace themselves for cancellations and delays of up to 60 minutes.

The disruption is expected to last until 10am, National Rail warned.

Here are the affected routes.

  • CrossCountry between Penzance and Edinburgh, between Plymouth and Bristol Temple Meads / Derby / Edinburgh, and also between Paignton and Bristol Temple Meads
  • Great Western Railway between Penzance / Plymouth / Paignton / Taunton and London Paddington, between Penzance / Plymouth / Exeter St Davids / Taunton and Cardiff Central, between Newquay / Taunton and Bristol Temple Meads, and also between Plymouth and Gloucester

What to do if you’re travelling on CrossCountry or Great Western Railway

CrossCountry is trying to sort out replacement vehicles between Exeter St Davids and Bristol Temple Meads, with further information expected once it is confirmed.

Great Western Railway has been able to arrange ‘a very limited replacement transport between Taunton and Exeter St Davids,’ National Rail said.

Passengers ‘strongly advised’ to sort out their own travel between Taunton and Exeter St Davids, it said.

Burst water main impacts trains to Gatwick Airport

A water main has burst near the railway not far from London Victoria.

Trains have to run slower on all lines which means services are being delayed.

This is impacting Gatwick Express trains as well as Southern services to and from Victoria.

Disruption is expected to last until 10.30am.

Ten trains bound for London Liverpool Street cancelled

A missed deadline means people will struggle to travel from Norwich to London until 11am this morning, National Rail said.

Ten trains scheduled to terminate at London Liverpool Street Station have already been cancelled due to engineering work not finishing on time.

Some Norwich-bound trains are instead terminating an hour’s drive south at Ipswich.

Greater Anglia is trying to source alternative means of transporting passengers to their final destination.

London Overground delays expected to last all morning

Good luck catching a London Overground train in north and east London, where disruption is expected to last all morning due to a signalling fault.

There are currently no trains between Willesden Junction and Camden Road, or between Gospel Oak and Walthamstow Queen’s Road.

Services between Camden Road and Stratford may also face delays, according to TfL, which expects it to last until midday.

Breaking news, nyc river water floods into queens midtown tunnel — snarling traffic and terrifying drivers.

Water from the East River flowed into the the Queens Midtown Tunnel Wednesday afternoon after a drilling contractor accidentally punched a hole in the roof and caused a deluge that terrified drivers, according to officials and shocking video.

Workers were doing “investigative work related to the design of the upcoming UN esplanade project ” when they punctured a hole in the edge of the tunnel, Josh Kraus of the New York City Economic Development Corporation said at a press conference.

The busy passageway sprung a leak in the south tube on the Queens side at around 12:30 p.m., prompting officials to close it for roughly 45 minutes.

Queens-Midtown tunnel shut down due to water condition causing traffic delays

Video of the massive leak, showed cars driving trough the tunnel as water cascaded down from square openings.

“Well that’s scary,” said someone in a video posted online by @whatisnewyork.

By 3 p.m. officials had reopened one lane in each direction — but traffic remained snarled.

MTA CEO Janno Lieber said city-funded private contractor caused the damage while drilling to find pylons for the East River greenway and that the hole was 2 1/2 inches in diameter in the roof, according to Fox News .

“We determined it was a drilling contractor who drilled about a 2.5 inch hole through the cast iron liner [of the tunnel],” Cathy Sheridan, President of MTA Bridges and Tunnels said at the press conference.

“We don’t know when we will be open. We hope it will be within hours and not days,” she said.

Queens-Midtown tunnel shut down due to water condition causing traffic delays

Sheridan said an interim contractor was on-site working on a temporary repair ahead of a more permanent fix.

City officials urged commuters to take public transportation to avoid delays.

The flooding flub comes after the tunnel was partially closed throughout the summer — as the MTA ran tests on 20-ton flood doors designed to protect the tunnel from hurricanes and storms.

The 29-foot structures were installed in 2017, as a part of the $7.6 billion program to repair and reinforce the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

“The MTA is actively pumping water out and two-way traffic has resumed at the north tube. The south tube is still being assessed,” Gov. Kathy Hochul tweeted .

“Please exercise caution if you’re in the area and plan alternate travel routes.”
