Day 0 southampton, england.

Known as the cruise capital of Europe, the Port of Southampton is a passenger and cargo port located in the central part of the south coast of England. There are four dedicated cruise terminals at Southampton which play host to a wide variety of cruise lines. Southampton is one of the most lively and dynamic cities in the south of England. From bustling shops and marinas to seaside resorts and areas of outstanding natural beauty, the city and region have lots to offer.

Day 1 St. Peter Port, Guernsey

Saint Peter Port is the capital of Guernsey, Normandy and with its cobbled streets and picturesque seafront marina and historic gardens, it is considered one of Europe's prettiest harbour towns. Day can be spent by looking at all the fishing boats and sailing yachts, with regular breaks for coffee, ice cream or a seafood lunch in one of the pretty quayside cafes, bars or restaurants. Every traveler will enjoy in Victor Hugo's House, harbour, Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery or the Guernsey Aquarium.

Day 2 Cork, Ireland

Cobh is a town on the south coast of Ireland, on an island in Cork city's harbour. It's known as the Titanic's last port of call which sailed from here on 14 April 1912. The centre of Cobh is compact and quite flat with a large waterside park and a good selection of bars, shops, cafes and restaurants.

Day 3 Dublin, Ireland

Dublin, capital of the Republic of Ireland is steeped in Celtic legend, and is one of the liveliest and most historic cities in Europe. Among the many must-see highlights that the city offers is the National Museum of Ireland, which is spread out over several venues, each covering a different speciality. The famous Book of Kells can be seen in the Old Library at Trinity College, while the Christ Church Cathedral is Dublin's oldest building.

Day 4 Liverpool, England

The Port of Liverpool is 7.5 miles dock system that runs on the the River Mersey. Liverpool is a city with unique attractions, exciting events, legendary football clubs and a rich musical heritage that includes the Beatles, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and other groups from the Merseybeat era.

Day 5 Belfast, Northern Ireland

Belfast is Northern Ireland's capital. If passing through as part of a cruise, be sure to head straight for the so-called Golden Mile, which runs from Belfast City Hall to Queen's University, and is where you'll find the majority of the city's historic attractions as well as its best bars, restaurants and cafes.

Day 6 Greenock, Scotland

Greenock, formerly a burgh in the historic county of Renfrewshire, is a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area in Scotland, United Kingdom. Along with Gourock to the west and Port Glasgow to the east, it makes up a continuous urban area. Glasgow is Scotland's largest city and is renowned for its culture, style and the friendliness of its people. It's also famed for its Victorian and art nouveau architecture, a rich legacy of the city's 18th-20th-century prosperity due to trade and shipbuilding. Greenock is industrial town and port, hemmed in by hills. Main town attractions are: Town Hall, Custom House, churches, Sheriff Court, various mansions and the Watt Monument Library. Underheugh Cottage, is a working smallholding that is completely self-reliant. The owners organize various activities such as pig-keeping lessons, nature walks, gardening courses and the opportunity to dress up like an ancient Scottish.

Day 7 At Sea, At Sea

Wonderful day at Sea.

Day 8 Kirkwall, Scotland

Kirkwall is the largest town and capital of the Orkney Islands of Scotland. The town has two museums, the larger being Tankerness House Museum, which contains items of local historical interest within one of Scotland's best-preserved sixteenth-century town-houses. At the heart of the town stands St. Magnus Cathedral, which was founded in memory of Saint Magnus Erlendsson, Earl of Orkney 1108-1117 by Earl (later Saint) Rognvald Kali.

Day 9 Edinburgh, Scotland

The harbor is an excellent starting place for excursions to the city's Old Town, as well as to the medieval castle and other historic landmarks in the area. The Old Town, which was constructed during the Middle Ages when there was a continual fear of assault, huddles high on the Castle Rock with a view over the surrounding plain below. On the other hand, the New Town is comprised of a breathtakingly beautiful series of streets, crescents, and terraces.

Day 10 At Sea, At Sea

Day 11 le havre, france.

British Isles Cruise – Complete Packing List + Printable Checklist

If you are considering a British Isles cruise you may be wondering what you need to pack. The unpredictable weather can make packing for a British Isles cruise a little harder than other locations but I have successfully managed it and will show you everything that I packed in this article.

I took a British Isles cruise in 2018 and it was amazing.

Below is a photo of me during my British Isles cruise. Note the red coat, that came in handy! We talk about clothing later in this article.

British Isles Cruise Loch Ness Passport

British Isles Cruise – Packing List: Essentials

Your passport is the most important item you’ll pack.

Even if you are from Britain and are taking a British isles cruise you will need a passport.

If you are from America or Australia there are certain cruises which you can do without a passport but this isn’t the case in Britain, all passengers must have a valid passport.

All guests coming from overseas will need a valid passport. It was the case that 6 months validity is required after the trip.

Bring Your Cruise Ticket to Make Everything Easier

Prior to your cruise, you will either:

  • Be emailed a cruise ticket (most common).
  • A ticket will be sent to you in the mail (less common).

If you are able to print out the cruise ticket it makes the process of checking in for the cruise much easier.

At check-in all that you need is this cruise ticket and your passport, a credit card also usually makes things easier but it isn’t mandatory for you to embark on your cruise.

In theory, the cruise line could find your booking from your passport but it’s much easier if you print the ticket yourself.

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance Confirmation

You will need travel insurance for a British isles cruise even if you are British. If you did become unwell or injure yourself treatment onboard is still incredibly expensive and getting you back to land to seek further treatment can cost a lot.

If you are from outside of Britain this is even more important.

Travel insurance can also cover you for things like lost luggage and possibly even missed ports if the travel insurance you buy includes this feature.

I always use a comparison website to buy my cruise specific travel insurance, check out my recommendations here: Travel Insurance Recommendations .

If you are not yet convinced that you need travel insurance to cruise check out this post which tells the story of a man who died when he had a stroke on a Carnival cruise and was unable to get back to the US as he didn’t have travel insurance.

Bring Any Prescriptions You May Need (Plus Extras!)

When cruising it’s always important that you bring any prescription medicines you may need and also bring your prescriptions with you if possible.

This way if you run out of your medicine when on board for any reason you may be able to get a refill and it provides a useful record of which medicines you take.

It’s important that when you check-in for your cruise you bring medicines in your hand luggage rather than your checked-in bag as you will be separated from your checked-in bag for a while and there is always the possibility that it will be lost.

Cruise ships do have pharmacies on board but these are limited. To learn more about the onboard medical facilities, check out the post below:

Cruise Ships Don’t Have Full Pharmacies on Board – Here’s What They Have

Print Your Own Luggage Tags if Possible

Many cruise lines will send you luggage tags. Some send the actual tags and others you are required to download and print at home.

This isn’t usually mandatory and if you don’t do it you can get the tags at the port but it makes things much easier if you have already done it at home.

The last thing you want is to have to stand in another line when you get to the port!

You usually have to either staple or tape your luggage tag to your suitcase so I usually bring a roll of tape with me if I am staying somewhere before the cruise.

norwegian epic luggage tag on bag

You NEED to Pack Travel Adapters For Your Cruise

When I took my first British Isles cruise with a friend she forgot to bring travel adapters (I had a spare)!

Don’t assume that cruise ships cruising the British Isles will have UK plug sockets because the majority don’t.

Generally speaking, cruise ships have a combination of UK and US plug sockets so bring an adapter for both. You can usually buy adapters onboard in the gift shop but these are incredibly expensive.

Bring Your Phone/Camera to Take Photos

I think this one goes without saying but make sure you pack your phone if you have one.

I use mine primarily is as a camera and carry it with me everywhere.

If you have a separate camera or action camera bring this too but don’t forget to bring all the chargers that you’ll need!

I’d also suggest bringing a battery pack if your phone is likely to keep running out of battery.

There isn’t much more annoying than wanting to take a photo of something and realizing your battery has run out.

You’ll Need a Credit/Debit Card and Cash

It’s usually easiest to attach a credit or debit card to your onboard account and to pay for your onboard expenses this way.

On many cruise lines, you are also able to ‘load’ cash onto your onboard account or pay in cash at the end. I also suggest bringing some cash for things like taxis and tipping.

It can be difficult to know just how much cash to bring on a cruise, I usually bring very little, to find out what I do recommend, check out this post:  How Much Cash Should I Bring on a Cruise? Budgeting Guide

british isles cruise packing

Save Money on Laundry by Bringing Travel Wash

If you think that you may need to wash some items of clothing but don’t want to pay for the onboard laundry one option is to bring a small bottle of travel wash and wash some clothes in the sink.

I’ve done this on a number of occasions and it does work well for certain things.

Some cruise lines do have self-service laundries and if the cruise line you’re cruising with has these this is usually an easy way to wash your clothes for a cheap price.

That said, don’t spend too much of your cruise doing laundry!

Embarkation Day Bag

When you embark you will check in your luggage and it’ll arrive later in your cabin. For a few hours on embarkation day you will be without access to your luggage so it is important that you keep any essentials that you need in your embarkation day bag.

I usually keep everything I need in my Mia Tui handbag.

A few things to keep in your embarkation day bag are:

  • Any Medicines You May Need
  • Your Passport
  • Your Car/House Keys
  • Cameras/Phones
  • Cruise Tickets and Documentation

To learn more about why you’ll see me with a Mia Tui bag on every cruise, and for an exclusive discount, check out this post:  Mia Tui 15% Discount code + Bag Review

British Isles Cruise – Packing List: Clothes

For a 7 night British Isles cruise I would recommend packing the following quantity of each item:

Pack More Underwear Than You Think You’ll Need!

I’d always recommend packing at least 7 sets of underwear/socks and would suggest that you pack more than this.

You might go swimming mid-way through the day and want to change or you might go on an excursion and get wet feet.

It’s always better to pack more underwear than you think you’ll need! If you do run out though, you can use the travel wash that we mentioned earlier.

Underwear is very easy to wash using a travel wash and can be hung in the bathroom to dry.

Simple T-Shirt and Tops Are Key!

7 t-shirts or tops of some kind should be more than enough. That said, you will probably want to get changed for dinner and may want to include some more formal t-shirt or blouses.

If you are planning on doing any exercise classes onboard you may also need a couple of workout appropriate tops.

Princess cruises cruise around the British Isles frequently and have free Zumba classes onboard. Don’t miss these if you are cruising with Princess!

To learn more about the included Zumba and other things that you shouldn’t miss on a Princess cruise, check out this post: Golden Princess Review, Food, Ship & More!

Bring Evening Wear if You’d Like to Change

Depending on the cruise line you may have formal nights.

Formal nights usually require men to wear a shirt and women to wear either an evening dress or a top/trousers combination.

I usually pack 2 or 3 ‘formal’ outfits for a 7-night cruise but don’t forget that things like formal shoes/cardigans/shrugs can be re-worn!

It isn’t against the rules to wear the same thing for multiple formal nights either, you’ll likely only be wearing it for a few hours and if you don’t spill anything down your front you are good to go!

Norwegian Cruise Line Formal Nights

You’ll Need Pants/Trousers/Jeans as The Weather is Unpredictable

The weather in the British Isles can be INCREDIBLY unpredictable.

I was very lucky when I cruised to the British Isles because we had glorious sunshine almost every day.

That said, even if it’s sunny in the morning it can be pouring with rain in the afternoon so it’s important you have enough trousers/jeans to wear every day if needs be.

For a 7 night cruise, I would pack around 3 pairs of pants/trousers/jeans.

Do NOT Cruise to The British Isles Without Multiple Sweaters/Jumpers/Hoodies

This is possibly the most important thing that you will pack for a British Isles cruise and I would recommend that you pack more layers than you usually would.

For a 7 night cruise, I would recommend packing 3 hoodies/jumpers/cardigans/pullovers of some kind.

Even if you are lucky and have the best weather possible this is likely to be mid 20c’s (70f’s) and the weather can change fast.

I’d always recommend bringing something small with you incase it does get cold and/or rain. The weather, particularly in Scotland can be very unpredictable.

Bring Comfortable Shoes (and Formal Shoes Too)

For a British Isles cruise, I would recommend that you first pack a pair of shoes which you are comfortable walking in such as sneakers or trainers.

You will probably be walking quite a lot and if you are visiting places like Giants Causeway it’s important that you have a good grip and feel comfortable walking in the shoes.

I’d also recommend that you bring some waterproof shoes such as boots. When it rains it rains a LOT and having wet shoes is not ideal. I’ve been on cruises before where it has taken multiple days for my shoes to dry after a rainstorm.

For formal nights/onboard the ship I would recommend that you pack a couple of pairs which are either heels/flats/sandals.

It’s usually relatively warm inside the cruise ship and you don’t have to worry about your feet getting wet!

Don’t be afraid to re-wear the same shoes, by sticking to neutral tones you can avoid having to change your shoes to go with each outfit.

I usually bring one pair of nude or black heels which I pair with most outfits for dinner.

british isles packing list

Consider Bringing Nightwear

This one is up to you but I’d recommend packing some nice pajamas.

Some cruise cabins do include bathrobes but being able to step out onto your balcony in your pajamas is nice!

The Most Important Thing to Pack for a British Isles Cruise is a Coat

I would recommend that you pack at least one good heavy coat.

The best thing to do is usually to wear this on embarkation day as then it doesn’t take up too much room in your suitcase.

As far as coat sizing goes bring a larger coat than you would usually wear because you’ll probably be layering up and wearing this over a sweater.

Don’t be fooled if you are embarking on a British Isles cruise in Southampton and the weather looks good that it will be for the entire cruise.

The weather changes quickly and it can be sunny in one part of the country and pouring with rain in another. Never take a British isles cruise without packing a coat.

British Isles Cruise – Packing List: Extras

Consider a small umbrella.

Having a little umbrella in your bag can save the day when on a British isles cruise.

I wouldn’t recommend bringing a full-sized umbrella as having to carry this around can be quite annoying but a small fold-up one that can fit in your backpack or handbag is definitely a good idea.

If you are cruising with a luxury cruise line like Viking you will have umbrellas available for you to use.

To learn more about cruising with Viking, including how to make the most of the included drinks, check out this post: Viking Ocean Cruises: What’s included (12 things)

Pack Hat and Gloves if Cruising to the British Isles

It can get incredibly cold and having a simple hat and gloves is definitely a good idea.

You probably won’t need these in the peak of summer (July-August) as it’s more likely to be rainy than cold but if you are traveling at any other time of year I’d recommend packing some.

If you’re cruising outside of summer a scarf might be a good idea too.

You May Need Suncream/Sunscreen, Even in Britain!

This may sound silly given the suggestions above but believe it or not, it can get pretty hot on a British Isles cruise!

Before you go have a quick look at the weather forecast and if there is any risk of hot wear make sure you pack sunscreen/suncream.

You would be able to buy this on the ship if you forgot it but toiletries sold on the ship are usually very expensive.

Always Bring A Small Fold up Coat

On my British Isles cruise, I took a very small fold-up waterproof coat that folded into a bag.

It was very inexpensive and wasn’t really very waterproof but it did the job when there was a light rain forecast.

Fold up coats like this are also great because they don’t make you very warm, sometimes wearing a big coat can feel too hot even if it is raining, especially if you are walking around a lot.

American arrested in Turks and Caicos over ammo found in bag gets suspended sentence of 52 weeks

By Alex Sundby

Updated on: May 24, 2024 / 10:47 PM EDT / CBS News

An American tourist who was arrested in the Turks and Caicos Islands for possessing ammunition was given a suspended sentence of 52 weeks on Friday and left the British territory following a monthslong ordeal, a spokesperson  posted to social media . The spokesperson for Bryan Hagerich of Pennsylvania initially said the sentence was 52 months long and then corrected the length of the sentence.

Hagerich was one of several Americans facing a potential mandatory minimum sentence of 12 years in prison on ammunition charges in Turks and Caicos. According to spokesperson Jonathan Franks, the judge found that the case had exceptional circumstances and that the lengthy sentence would be arbitrary. The father of two, who also had to pay a $6,700 fine, landed in Pittsburgh late Friday night, where he was met by his family, along with Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Republican Rep. Guy Reschenthaler.

Before leaving the islands, Hagerich told reporters he was elated with the outcome of his case.

"This is what we've been waiting for for the last 101 days, and to experience this here and eight short hours to be home and hug my kids, it's the best day," Hagerich said.

He said he was going to tell his children that he loved them.

"We have a lot of time to make up for," his wife Ashley Hagerich said.

Hagerich had pleaded guilty to possessing 20 rifle rounds, according to the Turks and Caicos government. He was arrested in February when the ammunition was found in his checked bag, and he said he spent eight nights in jail before he was released on bail.

"Some of the darkest, hardest times of my life, quite frankly," Hagerich told CBS News last month.

Premier C. Washington Misick said in a statement Friday that justice had been "served as the law intended."

"Today's decision reflects our commitment to judicial independence along with upholding the law," Misick said in a statement. "Residents and visitors can be confident that the Turks and Caicos Islands are dedicated to safety and compassion as we protect the safety and rights of all."

Hagerich told news outlets he didn't know he brought the hunting ammunition on a family vacation to Turks and Caicos but he recognized it when authorities found it in his bag.

Who are the Americans arrested in Turks and Caicos?

Hagerich is the first of several Americans arrested on ammunition charges in recent months to be sentenced. Three other Americans' cases are pending in the archipelago southeast of the Bahamas. A fifth American who was also recently charged was allowed to return home for medical reasons.

Tyler Wenrich , a father from Virginia accused of having two 9 mm bullets in his backpack when he was trying to board a cruise ship, pleaded guilty this week and is awaiting sentencing.

Ryan Watson , a father from Oklahoma, is expected to plead guilty next week after four rounds of hunting ammunition were found in his carry-on luggage last month.

Sharitta Grier , a grandmother from Florida who allegedly had two bullets in her carry-on bag when she was going home from a surprise Mother's Day vacation, has a court date scheduled for July.

The cases caught the attention of members of Congress, who recently visited Turks and Caicos and met with officials. Sen. John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, issued a statement Friday expressing gratitude for the judge's decision.

"When we met with TCI officials a few days ago, they made clear that they wanted this situation resolved," Fetterman said in a statement. "They recognized that Bryan and the other detained Americans are not gunrunners – they are just people who made a mistake."

Hagerich's congressman, Republican Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, said the ordeal was avoidable.

"While I am overjoyed to see Bryan Hagerich will be returning to Pennsylvania and reuniting with his wife and two children, this terrifying situation should have never happened to him," Reschenthaler said on social media .

Turks and Caicos travel advisory

Before Friday's sentence was handed down, Reschenthaler called for the Biden administration to stop Americans from traveling to Turks and Caicos. He told CBS News he wants the U.S. State Department to issue a no-travel order for the islands.

"Without question, Americans should not travel to Turks and Caicos until two things happen," Reschenthaler told CBS News senior transportation correspondent Kris Van Cleave on Thursday. "Number one, all our detainees need to be released to the United States immediately, and Turks and Caicos needs to repeal this draconian law that's totally out of step with other nations."

The State Department has a travel advisory in place for Turks and Caicos urging Americans to exercise increased caution there, which is similar to what the department has in place for some European countries and other places.

In a similar case last year, an Indiana man served more than five months in prison.

"No clean running water, you're kind of exposed to the environment 24/7, mosquitoes and tropical illnesses are a real concern," Michael Grim told CBS News.

Donald Trump became the first former US president to be convicted of felony criminal charges Thursday.

The real estate mogul, former commander-in-chief and presumptive Republican 2024 presidential nominee was found guilty on all counts Thursday by a jury of 12 Manhattanites in the unprecedented criminal prosecution of an ex-president.

The bombshell verdict was read in Manhattan Supreme Court just after 5 p.m. following nearly 12 hours of deliberations spread over two days — and a seven-week trial that saw X-rated testimony from porn star Stormy Daniels and Trump’s former “fixer” Michael Cohen take the stand against him.

“Guilty,” the jury foreman said calmly on the first count — before repeating the word 33 more times.

Trump, 77, in a bright blue tie, slouched in his seat, shoulders forward, tilting his head and looking at each of the jurors, seven men and five women, as they confirmed his fate.

  • Experts split over whether ‘hush money’ guilty verdict could cost Trump swing states

“The real verdict will be Nov. 5 by the people,” he told reporters glumly outside the courtroom. “I’m an innocent man.”

He repeated his charge that the trial was “rigged” against him and a politically-motivated witch hunt by Democrats.

What happens next after Trump is found guilty in hush money case

  • Donald Trump, who was found guilty on all 34 counts, will remain free until his scheduled sentencing on the morning of July 11.
  • The former president also does not face any travel restrictions until the sentencing.
  • Trump’s attorneys said they plan to appeal the verdict “as soon as we can.”
  • If Trump loses an appeal with the mid-level appeals court, he’ll likely seek to have the state’s highest court hear his case, which could take an additional year.

Here you can read more about what happens next following the historic guilty verdict and what Trump potentially faces.

“I’m fighting for our country, I’m fighting for our constitution,” Trump said. “We’re a nation in decline.”

Pols from both sides of the aisle were fired up about the verdict, with Dems including New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse cheering it.

“The rule of law applies to everyone,” Ocasio-Cortez gloated at a town hall in the Bronx. “Donald Trump was convicted by a jury of his peers.”

Republicans, such as House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, of New York, blasted the decision as showing “how corrupt and rigged the American justice system has become.”

Trump was accused by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office of illegally trying to cover up a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels — part of a scheme to stifle sex scandals that threatened to derail his 2016 campaign.

Jurors found that Trump falsified business records throughout 2017 by lying that he was paying his then-lawyer and “fixer” Michael Cohen for phony “legal services” when he was actually reimbursing him for the hush money that kept Daniels from speaking out about having sex with Trump inside a Lake Tahoe hotel room in 2006.

Prosecutors showed 11 invoices, 12 digital ledger entries and 11 checks to Cohen, most of which were signed by Trump, that they said were evidence that the Trump Organization tried to disguise the repayments to Cohen as phony legal services.

Trump’s lawyers seized on Cohen’s history of lies — and revealed that he’d once stolen $60,000 from the ex-president’s business — as they tried to paint him as a serial fabulist hellbent on seeing his former boss behind bars.

Cohen — a convicted perjurer who testified that he lied under oath in the past to “protect” Trump — was the prosecution’s star witness.

Other evidence suggested that Cohen, 57, was telling the truth when he claimed that Trump — who bragged in book excerpts shown to jurors about micromanaging every detail of his business — directed him to buy Daniels’ silence.

“He said, ‘Absolutely. Do it. Take care of it.’’’ Cohen told the jury.

Jurors heard Cohen on tape discussing Trump’s knowledge of the Daniels payoff with the porn star’s lawyer.

In another recording played at trial, Trump appeared aware of a plan to pay $150,000 to work with the National Enquirer to kill a story from another alleged mistress, Playboy model Karen McDougal, before the election.

Stormy Daniels testified about her affair with Trump.

“What do we got to pay for this? One-fifty?” Trump told Cohen on the recording.

In all over the six weeks of testimony, jurors heard from 22 witnesses total, with 20 called by the prosecution and two called by Trump’s side.

The panelists — who were kept anonymous throughout trial for their safety — asked for the long jury instructions to be read back to them and to again hear portions of the testimony, including that of former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker.

Pecker testified about two catch-and-kill payments he paid — at Trump’s behest — to the Playboy Playmate McDougal and a Trump Tower doorman to keep them from going public about other affair allegations.

Trump’s main witness was Robert Costello, a former federal prosecutor with ties to Trump’s legal team, who claimed that Cohen told him that Trump didn’t know about the Daniels payoff.

Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump walks to speak to the press after he was convicted in his criminal trial at Manhattan Criminal Court in New York City, on May 30, 2024.

Each of the 34 felony counts Trump was convicted of carry a possible sentence ranging from probation to up to four years in prison.

Trump is set to be sentenced on the morning of July 11.

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan said Trump can remain free without bail until that date.

On his way out of the 100 Centre Street courtroom, a red-faced Trump gave a vigorous handshake to his son Eric.

Demonstrators celebrate outside Manhattan criminal court following the verdict in former U.S. President Donald Trump's criminal trial over charges that he falsified business records to conceal money paid to silence porn star Stormy Daniels.

The jurors were asked to stay behind by Merchan, so he could thank them for serving and to get their feedback, before they were ushered away from the courthouse in four vans.

Bragg at a press conference declined to say whether he’d be seeking jail time at Trump’s sentencing.

“I did my job. Our job is to follow the facts and the law without fear or favor and that’s exactly what we did here,” the DA said. “There are many voices out there. The only voice that matters is the voice of the jury and the jury has spoken.”

Trump denied the charges and, in daily press conferences from the courthouse hallway, blasted the case as what he called a politically motivated plot to remove him from the campaign trail.

Trump denied the charges and, in daily press conferences from the courthouse hallway, blasted the case as what he called a politically motivated plot to remove him from the campaign trail.

Still, Trump was limited on what he could publicly say after Merchan before trial issued a gag order, barring him from speaking about jurors, witnesses, and court staff, including relatives of the judge himself and Bragg.

He declined to take the stand to testify in his own defense, but jurors are not allowed to take that decision into account during deliberations.

Trump repeatedly decried the gag — which an appeals court upheld — as unfair. Merchan slapped Trump with $10,000 of fines for ten violations of the order.

The case marked the first time in US history that a former president stood trial on criminal charges.

A man holds a placard outside Manhattan criminal court following the verdict in former U.S. President Donald Trump's criminal trial over charges that he falsified business records to conceal money paid to silence porn star Stormy Daniels.

Trump still faces three other criminal cases including in Georgia state court for allegedly attempting to interfere in the 2020 election result, in Washington DC federal court for his alleged involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol Riot and in Florida federal court for allegedly mishandling classified documents.

New York Law School professor Anna Cominsky said while Trump was convicted, there is certainly a long road ahead with his inevitable appeal.

“The jury has spoken,” Cominsky said. “Trump, like every criminal defendant, enjoyed the presumption of innocence until today.”

While “the case is not over” with the upcoming sentencing and likely appeal, for now, “he is the first president to be found guilty of felonies in our country’s history,” Cominsky said.

Protesters, both for and against Trump, flocked to the lower Manhattan courthouse during deliberations, with a few skirmishes breaking out between them and NYPD officers at one point stepping in to separate the mob.

At the end of the day, anti-Trump protester Nadine Seiler held a “Trump’s Convicted” banner and chanted “Don’s a felon!”

“He is not a Teflon Don anymore. He’s a convicted Don,” said the 59-year-old Maryland resident.

Cruise operators offer summer discounts as ships crowd the Caribbean, Alaska

By Doyinsola Oladipo

NEW YORK (Reuters) -Cruise operators Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings are discounting summer itineraries as they look to fill empty cabins aboard older ships, according to travel agencies and company websites.

The companies are lowering summer prices in part because more vessels are headed for already popular Caribbean and Alaskan destinations - and as they reroute ships away from Red Sea destinations due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Cruise operators on earnings calls have recently boasted of record demand that has driven revenue sharply higher as cruise passenger volumes surpass pre-pandemic figures. However, prices for cruises departing domestically from the United States this summer will be cheaper than the same period last year, according to data from travel group AAA.

In the Caribbean and Bermuda, Royal Caribbean's seven-day itinerary prices for interior cabins in June are down 21% year-over-year as of May. Similar Norwegian and Carnival itineraries are down 12% and 11% respectively, according to TripAdvisor's Cruise Critic, a vacation planning website.

Royal Caribbean is cutting rates for Caribbean itineraries for the third and fourth quarters, said Todd Elliott, CEO of Orlando, Florida-based Cruise Vacation Outlet, a travel agency.

"It seems more strategic on sailings that need a little more help," said Elliott. He noted cruises sailing around Africa instead of through the Red Sea are also being discounted.

Royal Caribbean, Carnival Corp and Norwegian declined requests for comment.

Cruise operators have been offering discounts on older vessels with newer ships coming onto the market, said an AAA spokesperson. Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Sea, which had its first voyage in January, demands at least $500 to $1,000 more per person than similar sailings in the region, Elliott said.

"Royal Caribbean has been able to keep the integrity of those prices thanks to the interest surrounding the ship," said Cruise Critic spokesperson, Aubrey Manzo Dunn.

Royal in April raised its 2024 profit forecast for a second time. Carnival said in March that its North American and European brands set booking records in the first quarter.

Some 202 vessels are sailing the Caribbean in 2024, an 8% increase year-over-year, according to Christian Savelli, cruise analytics director at Oxford Economics.

"There is an over-representation of new vessels in the region," said Savelli. "Rates seem to have reached a plateau."

Cruise fares are similarly falling this summer in Alaska due to increased capacity. Interior cabins aboard Carnival's Alaskan summer cruises are selling for about 20% less in July and August than they were in the same period in 2023, said Cruise Critic, while Royal Caribbean's Alaska trips are 6% and 12% cheaper in the same period for those months, respectively.

The number of vessels in the region are up 9.3% year-over-year according to Savelli.

However, with the communal nature of buffet dining, it’s important to be mindful of buffet etiquette to make sure everyone has a great experience. Here are 10 things you should never do at a cruise buffet.

Things You Should Never Do at a Cruise Buffet

1. use the same plate.

When you go back for seconds at a buffet, it’s important to use a new plate. This is for sanitary reasons, so you don’t inadvertently spread your germs to the buffet. It’s also good buffet etiquette to get a new plate when you go back for seconds.

2. Use the Same Serving Utensil on Several Dishes

When serving yourself at a cruise buffet, it’s important to avoid cross-contamination of food. If you are scooping food out from one dish using a serving utensil, don’t reuse the same utensil to scoop out food from another dish. This can lead to cross-contamination of the food between dishes, which can be harmful to people with food allergies.

As a mom whose son has food allergies, I understand the importance of being mindful of cross-contamination of food. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

3. Not Wash Your Hands

When serving yourself at a buffet, it’s important to wash your hands before eating. Cruise lines have made it easy for passengers to keep the buffet clean by installing handwashing stations and hand sanitizing stations at the entrance of buffets. As a reminder, they usually have a cruise staff member at the entrance whose sole job is to remind passengers to wash their hands at the sink. However, despite that, some cruise passengers completely ignore the handwashing station, hand sanitizing stations and walk right past the cruise staff!

Remember, washing your hands before eating is a simple yet effective way to prevent the spread of germs and keep yourself and others healthy.

4. Not Sanitizing Your Hands Before Eating

After serving yourself at a buffet, it’s important to clean your hands with hand sanitizer. Since you have gone around touching the serving utensils, it’s smart to sanitize your hands to get the viruses and bacteria off your hands when you’re eating.

5. Getting too Much Food

When serving yourself at a cruise buffet, it’s important to avoid over-scooping. The buffet is usually vast and offers a wide variety of food. Instead of filling your plate with too much food, try getting a little sample of everything. This way, you can try different dishes and know what you like. You can always go back for seconds if you want more.

6. Not Making One Round at the Buffet

Cruise buffets are usually vast and offer a wide variety of food. They can span an entire deck and have different types of food on both sides. It’s common for cruise lines to have themed dishes on one side and then have another type of food on the other side. So, don’t assume that the food at the buffet on one side is the same as the other side.

To make the most of your cruise buffet experience, it’s a good idea to check out the entire buffet so you can try everything. Don’t miss out by settling and eating from only one section of the buffet.

7. Not Dressing Appropriately

When serving yourself at a cruise buffet, it’s important to dress appropriately. Just because the buffet is next to the pool, you might think it’s okay to come in a wet bathing suit, towel, and flip flops. However, it’s poor buffet etiquette. You should at least have the courtesy of a swim cover-up to put over your bathing suit when you are at the buffet.

8. Don’t Hog the Table

The buffet is usually a busy and popular spot, especially during peak dining times. It can get so crowded that it’s hard to find a table. So, don’t be that table hog who is playing cards or hanging out at a buffet table long after you’re done eating. If you’re done eating, go somewhere else and let other passengers use the table.

9. Don’t Cut the Line

When you’re at the cruise buffet, be mindful of the line. Don’t just swoop in and cut the line. Be mindful of where the line is and make sure you are lining up at the buffet. Don’t be that rude passenger who cuts the line!

10. Don’t Let Your Kids Run Wild

It’s important to supervise your kids at a cruise buffet. Don’t let your kids get food unsupervised. They may not be taught proper buffet etiquette and may scoop food messily or even use their hands to reach for the food. They might also cut the line, which can be frustrating for other passengers.

To ensure that your kids are behaving appropriately at the buffet, it’s important to teach them proper buffet etiquette and supervise them so they are not cross-contaminating food and spreading germs at the buffet.

11. Don’t Miss the Made to Order Food Stations

One of the best parts of a cruise buffet are the made-to-order stations such as the omelet station, waffle station, wok station, or the pasta station. Because it’s made to order, the food is fresher than the food that’s been sitting out at the buffet table. If you want fresh food, order from the made-to-order station. Make sure you don’t miss out on Made to Order food!

12. Not Letting the Staff Know About Food Allergies

If you have food allergies, make sure to let the cruise staff know. They are usually very accommodating and can tell you what food is safe and what is not safe for you to eat. However,  there is always the risk of cross contamination at the buffet. For a safer option, go to one of the made to order stations and get your food especially cooked just for you without the allergens.
