Dates & Prices

Perhaps the most potent symbols of Kamchatka’s untamed nature are its towering volcanoes and the mighty Kamchatka Brown bears , the furry residents are the ancestor of the Alaskan Kodiak bears. These two iconic natural emblems are the main subjects of our Kamchatka bears and volcanoes tour, an adventure into the wilds of Russia’s Far East that's equal parts thrilling and humbling. Including three nights staying in a cabin on Kuril Lake at the height of the bear's salmon hunting season, this Kamchatka wildlife watching tour will get you closer than you ever imagined to the animal inhabitants of the Kamchatka peninsula.

Kamchatka - Kingdom of the Brown Bears tour highlights:

  • Kuril Lake during the summer salmon run is one of only a few places where visitors can observe hunting brown bears in their natural habitat at close proximity. To get the best chances of adrenaline-pumping close encounters and amazing photos ops, we’ll watch bears feed and frolick along the shore from a motorboat, as well as on-land from a special viewing platform overlooking prime fishing grounds.
  • Take off in a Russian Mi-8 helicopter for a breathtaking flight to the Khodutka River hot springs, nestled in a forested valley where we’ll bathe, relax and camp for the evening. The largest collection of hot springs in Kamchatka, water temperatures in the various spring pools range from 40 and 60°C.
  • Embark on a full day trek to the summit of Mutnovsky, one of the most active volcanoes in Russia. From the rim of the crater, you feel as if you’re witnessing the earth’s creation, gazing down upon glaciers and mineral lakes and the torches of sulphur spewing fumaroles far below.
  • Board a boutique cruising yacht for a relaxing day exploring the wildlife-rich waters of Avacha Bay and out to the stunning Three Brothers Rocks, keeping an eye out for whales, seals and seabird colonies along the way.

This Kamchatka bears and volcanoes tour starts and ends in the peninsula’s capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a humble but surprisingly lively port city and one of the few places in Kamchatka to offer genuine comfort. However, to properly experience Kamchatka, it also means forgoing hotel beds and restaurants and embarking on an extended commune with nature.

To maximise your time with the Kamchatka brown bears, you’ll spend three nights in a wooden cabin close to Kuril Lake. After our volcano summit scaling expedition, we’ll be staying in tents at base camp on the plateau of Mount Mutnovsky. With a hard day's trekking complete, there's nothing better than relaxing around the campfire under a roof of radiant stars. After several nights in the wilderness, this Kamchatka bear tour will treat you to an overnight stay in a hot spring resort in the gorgeous Paratunka Valley.

Your last full day can be spent exploring the township of Petropavlovsk at your leisure, or you can keep the action coming with the option of an awe-inspiring helicopter flight over the famous  Valley of Geysers.

For wildlife lovers, nature photography buffs and those who enjoy a challenging hike or two along the journey, this 10-day tour is the perfect window into the lost world of Kamchatka, one of travel's last frontiers.

Day 1 arrival to kamchatka.

Arrive in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative, cultural and industrial centre of Kamchatka and home to around 180,000 people. It is a remote poor city with little infrastructure, in a dramatic and beautiful setting; built on a series of high hills on the Pacific harbour of Avachinskaya Bay, surrounded by a chain of five towering volcanoes, two of which are still active.

From the airport, you’ll be transferred to your hotel in town, where you will take your time to relax and acclimatise. Meet a guide for a short briefing on a tour ahead.

You’ll be welcomed to Kamchatka this evening with a group dinner in a city restaurant.

Day 2 Helicopter fight to Kurilskoye Lake

This morning our journey to the Kingdom of Brown Bears kicks into high gear, with a morning flight by MI-8 helicopter to Kurilskoye (Kuril) Lake, deep in the heart of brown bear country!

One hour into our flight we’ll make a stopover at the Ksudach Volcano (if weather permits). We’ll take a walking excursion visiting the deep blue crater lake of Schtubelya, situated inside the volcano, and to a lovely waterfall where water cascades from the crater. Volcanic hot springs create a ‘hot beach’ on the lake’s shore, where it’s possible to take an invigorating swim.

Following your dip, our chopper flight continues the short distance to Kamchatka’s famed Kuril Lake. Our home for the next three nights is in a very basic but cozy wooden lodge. A wraparound deck affords a gorgeous view of the lake and surrounding mountains.

It’s often possible to watch bears fishing along the lake’s edge without even leaving the grounds of the lodge! In the afternoon, you’ll have time to enjoy excursions along the lake’s pumice rock beach, where you’ll be briefed about the next day’s activities.

Day 3-4 Kurilskoye Lake: bears watching, boat and walking excursions

Kuril Lake is without a doubt one of the best places on earth to spot and photograph brown bears in their natural habitat, so the next two days are devoted to observing these mighty mammals as they hunt the salmon that gather here in their millions during the summer months.

We’ll use a mix of a motorboat and walking excursions with experienced local wardens in order to maximise our chances of seeing bears up-close and observing different behaviours. The bear viewing platform (250m from our lodge) is located at the mouth of the many rivers that drain into the lake, providing awesome opportunities to take Nat Geo worthy photos of the bears fishing for migrating salmon.

Our longer walking excursions will lead us to a lush summer meadow where the bears feed on wild berries and visit other spawning streams further from the lodge. Along these streams, you’ll be able to see the spawning salmon in shallow water and many signs of a large number of birds in the area. There’s a good chance of spotting bears fishing only metres away as you walk along the banks of the streams.

Day 5 Helicopter flight to Mutnovsky volcano

In the morning we’ll take a final stroll around Kurilskoye Lake and head up to the bear-viewing platform for a final opportunity to bag a prize-winning shot of the magnificent beasts in their element.

Our afternoon MI-8 helicopter flight will drop us off on the banks of the Khodutka River for a bathe in the thermal hot water springs – the largest in Kamchatka. The water bubbles out on to a section of tundra located just under the Khodutka Volcano, forming a small stream. We board the MI-8 once more and set out for our camp on the Mutnovsky Volcano plateau, where our 4 or 6WD truck and team of volcano guides will be waiting for us. Accommodation for this evening is in a tented camp under the stars.

Day 6 Mutnovsky volcano trekking

After breakfast at the camp, we set out for a full day trek up the Mutnovsky volcano.

With two options for the walk depending on the group’s ability, the trek is an enjoyable adventure for everyone, with the highlight being a stroll into the active caldera. The first trekking option covers just under 7km, with a rise of 600m. A gentle stroll soon starts to climb steadily on the bedded volcanic rock of the Mutnovsky slopes, following a stream which emerges from the caldera gorge ahead. The second option is a long walk but with a lesser climb. A 6WD bus will take you as far as possible on a track below the hills of Skalisty and Dvugorby, two 20,000-year-old volcanoes. Beyond the track, a foot trail climbs past old bore holds spouting steam, with views of a number of peaks in the distance. The route makes a long traverse on a mix of rough tundra, lava blocks and banks of air-fall ash and pumice. It crosses three broad snowfields before a final rise to the mouth of the caldera gorge. The caldera floor is at an altitude of 1,540m, which is still 800m below the ice-capped summit of Mount Mutnovsky.

A picnic lunch will take place some distance from the active fumaroles. Afterwards, we’ll return to the campsite along the outward route. Dinner will be enjoyed back at camp.

Day 7 Gorely volcano trekking

Today’s destination is Gorely (1,829m), one of the most active volcanoes in Kamchatka. From our campsite, the 6WD heads north around the edge of a large lake that lies in the unfilled eastern crescent of the Gorely caldera. From the lake flats, the walk up the huge shield volcano is about 5km, with a steady 750m height gain. We’ll cross a mix of grassy tundra with dwarf willows and bare strips of basaltic lava and lava flow formations. The magnificent panoramic view in front of us looks out over a sudden, vertical descent into the active crater. Over 100m down, a hot acidic lake has active fumaroles around its margin and beneath the surface, thanks to Gorely’s recent steam eruptions.

After returning back along the trail, we re-join our vehicle and hit the road, rambling south to our next destination, the stunning Paratunka Valley. Check into hotel and enjoy a relaxing day’s end swim in a pool filled with thermal hot water.

Day 8 Avacha bay cruise and Volcanology Museum

Today, we’ll enjoy the day cruising and discovering the wildlife-rich waters of the Avacha Bay. A boat trip (6 hours) out into the bay is a very relaxing way of gaining an alternative view of the splendid setting of Petropavlovsk and its dramatic volcanoes. Departing from a pier near the centre of town, the expanse of the hilly city soon falls into perspective. Further toward the middle of the bay, both Koryaksky and Avacha volcanoes come into view behind the city. Near the mouth of the bay, the Three Brothers are tall finger-like sea stacks, whose rock faces rise vertically out of the water. The cliffs around the bay house many colonies of seabirds in their natural habitats, and puffins are commonly seen among many other types of seabird. Hot lunch is aboard.

This day, we also visit the Volcanology Museum with its spectacular photographs of most of the volcanoes. Return to Petropavlovsk sometime in the afternoon.

Day 9 Valley of Geysers and Uzon Caldera by helicopter (optional)

Today the choice is yours to either enjoy free day exploring Petropavolvsk at your leisure, or join an optional* scenic helicopter flight to the World Heritage site of the Valley of the Geysers and the crater of the mighty Uzon volcano.

The Valley of Geysers is the only geyser field in Eurasia and the second largest concentration of geysers in the world. This cluster of around 90 geysers, fumaroles and hot springs in this valley were only discovered in 1941. They lie above the marginal fractures of the oldest Uzon caldera and periodically expel hot water in spectacular jet streams. The MI-8 helicopter will take you on a flight (about 1h 15min) over Karymsky (active) volcano and Maly Semyachik volcano with its spectacular acid crater lake, and finally will land in the valley. The walking route (1h 30 min) goes along the wooden decking of the paths to the main observation points, from which you will see eruption of the biggest geysers, look into the “Gates to hell”, enjoy the views of the pots with boiling red clay.

After that, the helicopter will take you to Uzon Caldera (5-10min flight). During the excursion (40- 50min) you will walk along the Eastern thermal field to observe moon landscapes and volcanic activity. From here, you will fly (40 min) to the beautiful Nalychevo Valley where you will have lunch and a relaxing soak in natural thermal pools. Another 20 min flight, and you will back to the heliport.

Day 10 Departure

Today marks our final day in the Kingdom of the Brown Bears. After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the airport. Please keep in mind when planning your departure that hotel check-out is at 12pm.

Testimonials

Sarah Craig UK

Everything about the trip was done to the highest standards possible and I was very impressed!

The tour was smoothly planned and we were very lucky with the weather too and went straight from Kuril Lake to base camp by Helicopter giving us lots of extra time on a day that could’ve been all travelling. I enjoyed my time in Kamchatka very much! I would say I struggled a little being in such an organised trip, I’m used to doing my own thing, but in this location, I definitely got to see and enjoy more because it was a group and not just me on my own. Just because of the diversity of spectacular photographs I got on that day, the helicopter tour to Valley of the Geysers was the highlight of the trip, however, Kuril Lake is a close second!

I thought the hotels were very good. Our chef was FANTASTIC and the meals in restaurants got better and better finishing in a really luxury place on our final night! I found Russian people to be extremely friendly, surprisingly so seeing as they don’t all smile much! I felt very safe on my trip, and again I was surprised at how safe it is to be in Russia. In Moscow, teenagers had their phones in their back pockets unconcerned… in London, they would be stolen!

I wanted to leave a good review of my Russia tour because I was extremely happy with 56th Parallel services, I felt like a person the whole time I was dealt with and all the information was clear and correct. Everything about the trip was done to the highest standards possible and I was very impressed!

Anne Oppliger Switzerland

An unforgettable trip, out of the ordinary, I can only strongly recommend to all people who love open spaces and wild nature!

The bears are really not interested in your presence, too busy fishing…The lodge at Lake Kurilskoye is very comfortable. The large tents at the foot of the volcanoes were also very comfortable (camp beds, electricity).

Everything was perfectly organized,  our guide-interpreter was very friendly, experienced and efficient. We shared unforgettable moments in the group.  To conclude it was an unforgettable trip, out of the ordinary, that I can only strongly recommend to all people who love open spaces and wild nature.

Russian Far East (Asia)

Eight time zones away to the east of Moscow and even further away than Siberia lies the Russian Far East. One of the world’s most inaccessible places there are almost no roads and very few people over this vast tract of wilderness. Endless taiga forest and tundra hold enticing but elusive wildlife while the cold oceans bordering it support some of the most spectacular concentrations of marine mammals and seabirds found on Earth.

The Shantar Islands lie within the Sea of Okhotsk, a water body that is icebound for much of the year allowing it to support disjunct populations of mighty Bowhead Whales and several species of ice seals including Bearded, Ringed, Largha and even Ribbons. Orcas are common in the area and feast on the bounty of wildlife that congregates in the region during the brief open-water period of late summer and early fall. The shorelines support an important population of Brown Bears, here of one of the largest subspecies in the world. Birdlife in the region is also impressively prolific especially during the summer months when one can find massive Steller’s Sea Eagle, many species of alcids including Long-billed Murrelet, Tufted Puffin and many others, along with a fantastic assortment of waterbirds and breeding songbirds.

One of the best-kept secrets of wildlife travel anywhere on the globe, that is quickly changing and there has never been a better time to visit the Russian Far East!

Popular Tour

wildlife tours russia

Our wildlife holidays, wildlife tours and safaris of Russia are listed below:

By far the largest country in the world and with wilderness areas which may not have seen a human for 100’s if not 1000’s of years, Russia is one of the last great wildlife watching destinations. We are one of the few companies which visit Russia and in particular the far eastern Kamchatka peninsula. Exploring this vast expanse of land will always bring up a few wildlife gems and always surrounded by spectacular volcanoes, everywhere you look.

Bear watching is one of the most thrilling of all wildlife adventures and in Kamchatka you can be in the midst of dozens as they fish the spawning salmon. In addition to these magnificent animals there is excellent sea watching chances with orcas, sea lions, seals, dolphins and other whales all regularly seen. The area is also famous for its birdlife which boasts hundreds and thousands of shearwaters, gulls, petrels and other marine birds including the largest eagle in the world the glorious Steller’s sea eagle!

We also have a fantastic range of pioneering tours to Russia that focus on the Siberian Tiger (otherwise known as the Amur Tiger) and its far rarer cousin the Amur Leopard. We have developed a range of tours that have great chances of seeing the Siberian Tiger (less so the Amur Leopard but we hope for increased sightings as their numbers increase) in the wild. We have a great range of experts working in the Russian Far East and are confident of showcasing this iconic and incredible animal. So if you wish to see and track down the elusive Siberian tiger or Amur leopard then we can definitely help you fulfill your dream.

But it is not just the amazing and abundant wildlife of Kamchatka which is a major draw card here but the amazing scenery as volcano after hot spring after volcano after geyser after volcano litters the environment and makes you feel like a real adventurer.

All these tours are available on other dates (subject to availability) than the dates listed. Please contact us to arrange a tour on a date which suits you.
