Soccer’s Celebrity Supporters: The Clubs That The Stars Align With

Featured Image

While the superstars run around on the pitch, some clubs have even more recognizable fans supporting them. Everyone knows who Tom Cruise and David Beckham support, but what clubs are the younger generations of celebrities choosing to align with?

Here we go through what clubs are being backed by which celebrities and how they became supporters.

What Club Has The Best Celebrity Fans?

In the Juventus corner, you find two of the most popular young artists of this generation with both Drake and Rihanna supporting the Italian club. Having just Queen Ri-Ri as a fan is definitely enough for the club, but they landed both her and her lesser-known ex-boyfriend.

Drake is not the most dedicated Juventus fan as he has supported other clubs in the past — but if Paul Pogba gifts you a kit, you're no longer a hard rapper but just another Juventus fanboy.

While Juventus has two of the biggest stars of the modern day, Chelsea's famous supporters could match up to their star power. Everyone knows Will Ferrel is a big supporter, but what about NFL great and three-time defensive player of the year J.J. Watt? He made the decision to put his weight behind Chelsea as it was the first gear he received when he was looking for a team to follow. Seems easy enough. Chelsea should look into putting him on the backline.

Learning about the @premierleague and becoming a fan. Chelsea gear was the first apparel I received, so I rep it! Who's the team to follow? — JJ Watt (@JJWatt) March 14, 2014

The Blue support does not stop with J.J. as esteemed actress and model Cara Delevinge has been a long-time supporter. While some celebrities like to bounce around popular clubs, she has stuck with her team for a while. The low-quality picture of her and former Chelsea defender David Luiz from 2014 proves that she is not a bandwagon fan.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cara Delevingne (@caradelevingne)

Even though this man might be a few generations removed from being similar to these other celebrities, this guy inspired and educated enough of the younger generation that he is going in here. David Attenborough, the voice of Planet Earth and many other wonderful films, is also a die-hard supporter of Chelsea. His brother, the late Lord Attenborough, was an even bigger fan as he was a club director and vice-president at one point. With the most satisfying voice in the world, maybe Chelsea should think about adding him on as an announcer. I can already picture the long, calming "gooooaaalllll" call.

It was rumored that famous recording artist Ed Sheeran was also a Chelsea supporter as he could be seen supporting the Blue from the stands. But, Ed is actually an Ipswitch fan and just tags along with his Chelsea-loving family to matches.

While Chelsea might have quite the celebrity fan base, Fulham's supporters give them a run for their money. With just one celebrity fan supporting the club, Fulham has far and away the best support. Actress Margot Robbie takes the cake as the best supporter for obvious reasons. Who needs wins, trophies or even money when you have Morgot freaking Robbie rooting for ya. Good work Fulham, we see you.

They might have the support from a beuatiful actress, but do they have support from one of the greatest basketball players of all time? Nope, Liverpool takes that one as LeBron James is more than just a Reds supporter, but an investor as well. In 2011, a private investment group including LBJ invested in Liverpool Football Club. He purchased a 2% stake for around $6.5 million and now has seen his investment increase to around $51 million.

Not only does he support them as a fan, but at the bank too. You would think that's exactly the kind of fan clubs are looking for.

LeBron James detailed his "amazing" #LFC experience and discusses "unique" #ENG goal for Henderson https://t.co/OSYl6LWIdf — Liverpool FC News (@LivEchoLFC) July 9, 2021

The famous supporters of Liverpool don't stop with LeBron, as six-time Grammy nominee Lana Del Rey is also a fan. She even killed an acapella version of "You'll Never Walk Alone" that is featured in " The End of The Storm "  Liverpool documentary. With that voice behind you, how could you lose?

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lana Del Rey (@lanadelrey)

Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown was born into being a Liverpool fan and has not changed course since. Liverpool really has attracted quite the iconic fan base with LeBron James, Lana Del Rey and Millie Bobbie Brown leading the group.

With Rihanna behind Juventus and Lana supporting Liverpool, Tottenham secured their own generational artist as a fan a long time ago: Adele. The 15-time Grammy winner is from Tottenham and has been a supporter her whole life. She is joined by beloved High School Musical graduate Zach Efron. He is definitely not as die-hard of a fan of Spurs as Adele, but he is a good enough friend with Spurs star Dele Alli to be personally invited to games.

With the wide variety of celebrities who've chosen and supported their football club, what club comes away with the best celebrity fan base? We all know who I would pick... Fulham.

Sunday night's Euro 2020 final was played out in front of 65,000 supporters at Wembley stadium, including royalty and Hollywood star Tom Cruise.

After Luke Shaw's opening goal, an overjoyed Prince George was pictured celebrating jubilantly with his father Prince William as Wembley erupted.

But there were more notable faces in the crowd, namely Hollywood actor Tom Cruise.

TV cameras panned to Cruise, who was sitting alongside former England captain and Manchester United legend David Beckham, up in the stands in the first half of the match.

Why is Tom Cruise at England v Italy Euro 2020 final?

He is a high-profile England supporter.

Cruise's attendance at the match comes after he sent a message to the England team ahead of their Euro 2020 final against Italy, wishing them luck as they bid to win their first piece of silverware since the 1966 World Cup.

In fact, 59-year-old Cruise tried to phone England manager Gareth Southgate ahead of the tournament finale, but the Three Lions boss missed the call as he was studying videos of the Italians ahead of the encounter.

The squad, meanwhile, were treated to a private Friday night screening of Cruise's latest film, Top Gun: Maverick.

"They were very fortunate," Southgate said of the team's message from Cruise. "I don’t know whether they’re supposed to have said this because they all had to sign a (non-disclosure) form.

"They had a preview of a film that’s due out further down the line and they had Tom dial in to speak to them which was, I would imagine, quite surreal.

"I was in a meeting watching videos of Italy but that’s another story.

"I think they all thoroughly enjoyed that experience and, yeah, they’ve had a good week, really. Ed Sheeran (who performed a private gig earlier in the tournament), Tom Cruise – the life of an England footballer."

What is Tom Cruise's net worth?

Cruise's net worth is believed to be around £432million, according to Parade.

Cruise had earlier been seen in the Wimbledon men's single final between Novak Djokovic and Matteo Berretini, which was won by the Serb.

England team receive support from Tom Cruise ahead of final

Cruise England Kane

Harry Kane has revealed that Tom Cruise FaceTimed the England squad on Friday to wish them good luck in the final.

The Mission Impossible actor is thought to be a big football fan, and was keen to offer his support to the players ahead of their showdown with Italy.

Gareth Southgate’s squad were also treated to a special preview of the anticipated Top Gun sequel.

FEATURE: One player from each Championship club with a point to prove

Kane told BBC Radio 5 Live: “We actually had Tom Cruise get in touch yesterday evening, you get everyone who loves football.

“We were fortunate enough to watch one of his films, so I think he was over here in the UK and he just dialled in and FaceTimed us just to wish us the best as a group, so that was nice of him.

“The majority of people in the world love football, so it’s great to have all that support not just in England but across the world.

“It’s been a great time for all of us, we’ve enjoyed every moment of it so we’re just looking forward to hopefully finishing the job.”

Wayne Rooney, the country’s record all-time goalscorer, thinks England’s quality will see them through.

“I think we’re favourites,” he said in his column for The Times .

“Quality-wise England have enough and mentally you can see the players are in a good place.

“My one warning would be that we can’t get caught up in how Italy play, the way they’ll try and slow the game down. If I were Gareth I’d be telling the England players to get the ball down and play quick, keep the tempo high, keep the Italians working, tire them out.

“Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini are great players – but not the quickest. I’m sure Gareth and Steve Holland will be looking at Alvaro Morata’s goal for Spain in Italy’s semi-final.

“It showed that if you can get bodies around those two great centre-backs, making sharp movements in behind them, they’re not comfortable.

“If England can get Raheem making his inside runs, and Harry and other quick players moving down their sides, Chiellini and Bonucci won’t enjoy it one bit.

“I honestly think if England can get their forward play right, we can have a field day. That today could – maybe should – be England’s day.”

Tom Cruise decided to surprise a local football club when he offered to sign some football shirts for their fundraiser .

The 58-year-old Mission: Impossible star, who is currently filming the latest installment of the franchise, was happy to help the grassroots club after they were forced to relocate from Bedfordshire sports ground to make way for filming.

While the team were initially "disappointed" at being unable to access the football pitches, the production company kindly offered to make it up to the group.

Tom Cruise was seen arriving at the town and later gave the club a signed football shirt that they were able to use in their fundraiser.

Woburn & Wavendon Football Club, which was trying to raise £12,000, had suffered serious financial losses as a result of cancelled tournaments the pandemic.

Luckily, Tom's kind donation was sold for £150 which went toward the fundraising efforts.

In the social media post shared on the Woburn & Wavendon Football Club Twitter page, Tom Cruise was pictured stood next to a helicopter alongside an image of the one-of-a-kind shirt.

The post said: "Hollywood star Tom Cruise was in town filming near one of our venues, meaning we had to relocate, but the Mission Impossible crew generously gave us their support with Tom signing a few shirts too.

"Those are now available as rewards on our campaign page."

Tom Cruise has offered to help a volunteer-run UK football club whose fundraising activities were halted by coronavirus-imposed lockdowns.

The actor, who is currently filming Mission: Impossible 7 at locations across the UK, signed shirts for the Woburn & Wavendon Football Club, which will go towards its fundraising activities.

The club set up a crowdfunding campaign to help pay for its community initiatives after money-raising activities dried up due to pandemic-imposed lockdowns.

Members were initially disappointed when they had to relocate because their training ground in Bedfordshire was booked for the Mission: Impossible shoot, chairman Robert Hill told the BBC .

"They were desperate to get back on and play some football after lockdown restrictions eased," he said.

But when the club got in touch with the production company in charge of the film, they said they would do their best to help. Soon enough, Cruise obliged and signed some of the club's kit.

"Hollywood star Tom Cruise was in town filming near one of our venues, meaning we had to relocate, but the Mission: Impossible crew generously gave us their support with Tom signing a few shirts too," the club tweeted on Saturday, along with a photo of Cruise on set as well as a sample of a signed shirt.

Fans posted selfies with a smiling but socially-distanced and masked Cruise, as well as videos of the actor arriving on set in a helicopter.

Last month, Cruise was spotted coming to the rescue of a stumbling cameraman while filming a stunt in Yorkshire.

In February, he wrapped up filming scenes for Mission: Impossible   around the Louvre Abu Dhabi . The crew, along with Cruise, were in the UAE capital for a week.

Mission: Impossible 7 , which does not have an official title yet, has filmed around the world in places such as Norway, London, Rome, Venice and Abu Dhabi. The Christopher McQuarrie-directed film, which was initially supposed to release in July this year, will now hit cinemas in May, 2022.

England squad get Tom Cruise team talk after special Top Gun: Maverick screening as Red Arrows plan iconic display over Wembley ahead of Euro 2020 final against Italy

The England team received a very special message from Hollywood legend Tom Cruise on the eve of their Euro 2020 final against Italy.

But manager Gareth Southgate, ever the professional, missed it for another, far more important film... of their opponents.

Top Gun star and Hollywood icon Tom Cruise joined the England team via video call ahead of the Euro 2020 final

The Three Lions were treated on Friday night to an exclusive screening of Cruise’s latest blockbuster, highly anticipated sequel Top Gun: Maverick, which isn’t released until next month.

And after watching the movie at St George’s Park, the England players were then surprised by an appearance from star of the film, Cruise, himself.

The American star dialled in on FaceTime to speak with the team ahead of Sunday’s huge final, with the pressure of a nation and generations of hurt on their shoulders.

Cruise was one of the lucky ones to make it onto UEFA's VIP guest list for the Euro 2020 final

Cruise was actually a special guest of UEFA's at Wembley and was seen in the stands bumping fists with David Beckham in the stands as they celebrated Luke Shaw's opener.

You can imagine the team talk they would have been give by Cruise ahead of the game, but nobody knows exactly what was said, as the entire team were forced to sign non-disclosure agreements banning them from talking about the yet to be released movie and their conversation with Cruise.

But it is understood the squad were understandably thrilled about speaking to one of the biggest stars on the planet, who is a good friend of former England captain Beckham.

Kane and Sterling have been unstoppable for England - can they guide the Three Lions to a first major tournament win since 1966?

“The lads had a preview of a film that is due out and also had Tom dial in to speak to them," Southgate revealed.

“I would imagine it was all quite surreal. They were very fortunate, although they all had to sign a form.

“I was in another meeting watching videos on Italy – which is another story - but I think they all enjoyed the experience.

“They've had a good week really, with Ed Sheeran and Tom Cruise - that's the life of an England footballer.”

Ipswich Town fan and Grammy Award winning singer-songwriting superstar Sheeran put on a special gig for the England squad last month before the tournament began.

He has since been spotted at a number of the Three Lions’ matches at Euro 2020 and is likely to be back in the Wembley stands for the final.

That’s not the only Top Gun experience the England players will have before the final, though, with the Red Arrows set to perform one of their iconic displays over the Wembley roof ahead of kick-off.

The RAF display team will take off from an air base in Bournemouth at around 7:27pm and will be due to fly over the stadium shortly at 7:48pm - 12 minutes before the game is due to begin.

Spotted Hollywood star Tom Cruise in the Wembley crowd? Turns out Euro 2020 has made him quite the England fan

Tom Cruise, Euro 2020 final

Tom Cruise is among the names on the UEFA guestlist for Sunday night's Euro 2020 final between Italy and England.

The American actor, 59, is not a renowned football fan, but seems to have become caught up in the national fervour around Euro 2020 while in the UK this summer.

Cruise already sent the England squad a motivational video message, which the team watched on Friday night, along with a screening of his upcoming film Top Gun: Maverick , which won't be out until November.

While he will enjoy the football on Sunday evening, his sporting weekend already included a trip to the men's Wimbledon tennis final earlier in the day.

England manager Gareth Southgate said the team were "very fortunate" to have got the message from Cruise – though admits he didn't see it himself.

"They had a preview of a film that’s due out further down the line and they had Tom dial in to speak to them which was, I would imagine, quite surreal," Southgate said. "I was in a meeting watching videos of Italy but that’s another story."

Other special guests at the match include Prince William, who is president of the English FA, football stars Sir Geoff Hurst, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Fabio Capello, Robbie Keane, Gianluca Zambrotta, Alessandro Nesta, Mauricio Pochettino and supermodel Kate Moss.

Tom Cruise helps out struggling non-league football club after using their pitch as a movie set

Hollywood A-lister Tom Cruise helped out a grassroots football club that is struggling financially by signing replica shirts for an auction.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many football clubs around the country have been suffering as fans haven’t been allowed to attend games.

But for Woburn & Wavendon Football Club in Bedfordshire, the annoyance of being kicked off their ground for a film shoot was eased when the film’s huge star, Tom Cruise, helped them out.

The football team had been forced to vacate the area to make way for the Mission: Impossible 7 film crew. But, to make amends Cruise signed some of the club's shirts that will now be auctioned off to raise money for the club.

The A-list actor signed a handful of their football shirts, and money raised from the sale of them will go towards their crowdfunding campaign, with the hope of reaching £12,000.

The football club’s chairman Robert Hill said the team was “desperate to get back on and play some football” since coronavirus restrictions were lifted, but that the production company reassured them they would “do whatever we could” to ease the burden.

In a message from Woburn & Wavendon FC’s Twitter account, they wrote: “Hollywood star Tom Cruise was in town filming near one of our venues, meaning we had to relocate, but the Mission Impossible crew generously gave us their support with Tom signing a few shirts too.”

The club has lost approximately £30,000 due to the impact of the pandemic and said some of the money raised would go towards supporting community initiatives.

Few Hollywood figures have had a better 2022 than Tom Cruise .

“Top Gun: Maverick” was as big of a success as you can possibly get, earning rave reviews while dominating the box office for months and proving there is still an audience for Cruise’s brand of high quality blockbuster filmmaking. The film had the kind of staying power that most blockbusters can only dream of. Paramount even re-released the film in theaters for a two-week run earlier this month. The film begins streaming on Paramount+ on Thursday, December 22.

Naturally, Cruise wanted to thank his fans for the success of the film but the daredevil actor doesn’t do anything the conventional way. Football fans were reminded of that during a commercial that aired during CBS’ Sunday NFL coverage. In a video taped from the set of the upcoming “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning” films, Cruise thanked his fans for his remarkable year.

“Hey everyone,” Cruise said from the plane. “Here we are over stunning South Africa, where we’re filming ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’ parts one and two. And I didn’t want the year to end without thanking you all for coming out to the theaters and thank you for supporting ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’”

He was promptly interrupted by “Dead Reckoning” director (and “Top Gun: Maverick” screenwriter) Christopher McQuarrie , who playfully told him to keep his remarks brief so they could get the shot of Cruise jumping out of a plane. Cruise happily obliged and jumped into the sky — but he wasn’t done talking.

“Where was I?” he asked while free falling. “Oh yeah. Thank you for supporting ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and thank you for allowing us to entertain you. It truly is the honor of a lifetime.”

As he got closer to the ground, Cruise understandably needed to cut the announcement short, but not before he wished his fans a happy holiday season.

“I’m running out of altitude, so I have to get back to work. We have to get this shot. You have a very safe and happy holiday, we’ll see you at the movies.”

Did Tom Cruise Play Sports?

26 july 2022.

If you’re one of the millions of people who are seen “Top Gun: Maverick,” you know that Tom Cruise is a pretty athletic guy.

If you’re a Cruise fan, you know just how athletic Cruise is, especially when it comes to doing the daring stunts that are part and parcel of his movies.

But those same stunts raise an obvious question-is Tom Cruise really an athlete, or is it all just movie magic? The answers will surprise you in at least a couple of ways, so let’s explore.

High School Hero

Back when he was in high school, Tom Cruise was fairly serious about sports. He played soccer, wrestled, and ran track, and he was slated to be a star middle linebacker for his high school football team in Glen Ridge, New Jersey when he was caught drinking beer before a game and bounded from the squad.

That kind of risky business didn’t seem to hurt Cruise’s career in the long haul, though. The one big obstacle Cruise faced when he was younger was dyslexia, which he hide the fact that he was functionally illiterate from his classmates.

Even Cruise himself didn’t know at that point that his athleticism would play a prominent role in his success as a movie star.

A lot of that was about his stunning handsomeness, but Cruise worked hard to hone his skills as an actor, and using his athleticism to his advantage was a major part of that.

The Ultimate Athletic Action Hero

It was during his roles in action movies that Cruise’s athleticism truly began to emerge. He’s always taken care of himself, but he quickly acquired a reputation as a daredevil when he insisted on doing his own dangerous stunts.

Many of those stunts are legendary, especially the ones that have him leaping from buildings in the “Mission Impossible” series. Cruise may not be a competitive athlete on the professional level, but every stunt man who’s ever done what cruise is done knows the strength and speed that goes into those kinds of stunts.

There’s serious danger involved, too. Taking a hit in the NFL or a charge in the NBA might hurt, but those kinds of hits are rarely life-threatening.

The stunts in the movies are. Plenty of safeguards are put in place, but stuntmen live with broken bones as a factor of life, and Tom Cruise took on the same kind of risks they did.

Cruising Speed

The one element of Tom Cruise’s athleticism that has come under scrutiny recently is his speed, especially now that Cruise has turned 60.

Based on his role in “Top Gun: Maverick,” several media outlets have done some probing interviews about the speed Cruise has shown in his most recent movies.

Those interviews were revealing, to say the least. It was Cruise himself who brought attention to his speed when he finally joined Instagram, and his self-assessment steered clear of obvious choices like “three-time Oscar nominee,” or “sold $10 billion worth of movie tickets.” Instead, Cruise cited himself as an actor and producer, but the tag for those two jobs was shocking: “been running in movies since 1981.”

ESPN was curious about this, of course, so they asked some telling questions to some very high-level track stars to analyze Cruise’s technique.

Jackie Joyner-Kersee was one of those who analyzed Cruise’s style, and while she said that certain things he said were designed to make him look good on film, his stiff but disciplined running style actually wasn’t bad at all.

But track stars like Joyner-Kersee weren’t the only ones who broke down Cruise’s style. Given the vagaries of modern video technology, various video experts have clocked Cruise at just over 15 mph when he runs, and Cruise himself has said he’s hit 17 mph.

The final words were put in by marathoner Will Blase, who claims that Cruise might be the fastest actor ever to hit the silver screen. He broke down Cruise’s speed against that of Tom Hanks in “Forrest Gump,” Harrison Ford’s sprint to escape from a builder in “Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Stallone’s staircase spring in “Rocky II,” and Cruise won the imaginary gold medal.

Don’t expect Cruise to stop going for the gold, athletically speaking. His ambition doesn’t seem to have diminished much at all, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see him running for his life and for big box office receipts-in whatever movie he decides to do next.

12 Things You Might Not Know About Tom Cruise

By jake rossen | may 28, 2024.

Tom Cruise in 2023.

Defining movie star is somewhat subjective. If it’s a combination of charisma, audience interest, and box office success, then one of the few performers that continue to meet the definition is Tom Cruise. The actor, who has been on screens for over 40 years, regularly makes movies that are considered appointment viewing in theaters even in the era of streaming. His Mission: Impossible series alone has brought in over $1.3 billion domestically.

Part of Cruise’s appeal is his enigmatic public persona. He rarely lets his guard down, preferring to let his work speak for him. Nonetheless, there’s still plenty to know about his life and career.

Tom Cruise started doing stunts early on.

He was a pretty good high school wrestler., cruise auditioned for risky business with a chipped tooth., he didn’t love cocktail ., cruise directed an episode of television., cruise took heat for two adaptations., cruise could have been in the shawshank redemption ., cruise was involved in one of the longest film shoots of all time., he has a cousin who is also an actor., cruise rescued multiple people from maritime disaster., he asked to be included in a photo with some famous directors., cruise gifts colleagues with hundreds of holiday cakes..

Born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York, Cruise seemed to be drawn to physical activity and danger from an early age. In 2022, the actor recalled that when he was around 4 years old, he thought it would be a good idea to jump off the roof of his childhood home while using a sheet as a parachute. "It’s that moment when you jump off the roof and you go, ‘This is not gonna work,’” he said. “’This is terrible. I’m gonna die.’ And I hit the ground so hard. Luckily, it was wet … And I saw stars in the daytime for the first time, and I remember looking up, going, ‘This is very interesting.’”

Cruise’s mother, Mary, separated from his father, Tom Senior, in 1976, when Cruise was 14. (The actor would later allege that Senior had been abusive toward him.) The family moved to Louisville, Kentucky, and Cruise also spent some time in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he briefly considered becoming a Franciscan priest. Eventually, he rejoined his family and they settled in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, where he joined the varsity high school wrestling team as a junior and senior. During the 1979-1980 year, the team went 14-4-1.

The wrestling may have indirectly played a role in his career choice. After a leg injury prevented him from continuing, he decided to investigate acting and signed up for a role in a school production of Guys and Dolls . “All of a sudden, I felt like I knew what I was doing,” he said in 1983. “And I got all this attention, and it just felt right. So I came to New York. I wanted to try [acting].”

In 1981, Cruise appeared in a small role in Endless Love and as a military cadet in Taps . Two years later, he appeared in the teen sex comedy Losin’ It and the football drama All the Right Moves . Cruise also scored a role as a street punk in The Outsiders . It was during filming of The Outsiders that Cruise auditioned for Risky Business , which cast him as a preppy kid who runs amok when his parents leave town. “I told them, ‘I can't afford to tamper with my Outsiders character because I have to work tonight,’” he said in 1983. “’I can't take a shower, even.’ I was all greasy, had a chipped tooth and a tattoo, and an Okie drawl. And they cast me for this clean-cut boy.”

Risky Business was considered Cruise's true breakout role. It also made Cruise synonymous with Ray-Ban sunglasses, which he later wore to great effect in 1986’s Top Gun .

The mid- to late-1980s was a period where Cruise was able to demonstrate his dramatic chops with prestige directors in films like 1985's Legend (Ridley Scott), 1986’s The Color of Money (Martin Scorsese), 1988’s Rain Man (Barry Levinson), and 1989’s Born on the Fourth of July (Oliver Stone). In the middle of this impressive run came Cocktail (1988), a relatively lightweight drama about a bartender who relocates to Jamaica. It was “not a crowning jewel,” he told Rolling Stone in 1992. The film earned a Golden Raspberry Award, or “Razzie,” for Worst Picture, the same year that Rain Man won the Oscar for Best Picture.

Given his collaborative nature and intense interest in filmmaking, it’s somewhat surprising Cruise has yet to helm a feature film. But he has gotten behind the camera. In 1993, Cruise directed an episode of the Showtime series Fallen Angels , an anthology set largely in 1940s and 1950s Los Angeles. In the episode, titled “The Frightening Frammis,” a con man (Peter Gallagher) has the misfortune to cross paths with a femme fatale named Babe (Isabella Rosellini). The series was produced by Sydney Pollack, who had just directed Cruise in the 1993 film The Firm .

When Cruise was cast as the vampire Lestat in 1994’s Interview With the Vampire , the book’s author, Anne Rice, was a vocal critic, saying she preferred someone like Daniel Day-Lewis for the role. After seeing Cruise in the part, Rice changed her mind, calling him “wonderful.” Cruise had a similar experience in 2012’s Jack Reacher , where fans of the Lee Child book series found him smaller in stature compared to Child’s towering protagonist. The film did well, however, meriting  a 2016 sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back .

The list of movies Cruise has been offered (or at least had discussions about doing) is long, and the list of movies he’s turned down is likely even longer. Among them: Footloose , Edward Scissorhands , and The Shawshank Redemption . Director and writer Frank Darabont, who adapted the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption for the screen in 1994, said that producer Rob Reiner offered to acquire the script so he could direct and his A Few Good Men star Cruise could step into the role of Andy Dufresne. Darabont was tempted, but ultimately decided to make the movie himself. He cast Tim Robbins as Dufresne.

Cruise and then-wife Nicole Kidman agreed to star in director Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut , which examines the complicated marriage of a young couple tempted by forces outside their union. Kubrick ( 2001: A Space Odyssey ), a notorious perfectionist, shot the film for an astounding 15 months, far beyond the typical four- to six-month shoot of many films. Guinness World Records recognizes it as the longest continuous production in cinema history. (Interrupted shoots are a different story: Richard Linklater’s coming-of-age drama Boyhood shot for 39 days over a window spanning from 2002 to 2013.)

Eyes Wide Shut was met with a tepid reception, though it proved bountiful for Cruise. While on set, he met with director Paul Thomas Anderson, who cast him as a motivational speaker in 1999’s Magnolia . That part earned Cruise an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He had previously been nominated for Born on the Fourth of July and for Jerry Maguire (1996), though he has yet to win.

Cruise wasn’t the only member of his family to get into acting. His fraternal cousin, William Mapother, is also in the business and has shared several of Cruise’s film sets. Mapother was a production assistant before getting parts in Magnolia (1999) and in 2002’s Minority Report , playing a desk clerk who is threatened by Cruise’s distressed protagonist. Mapother might be best known as Ethan Rom, a character of dubious intentions on ABC’s drama Lost .

In 1996, Cruise and then-wife Nicole Kidman were aboard a yacht near Capri, Italy, when they came upon a family floating in a lifeboat whose own yacht had caught on fire. They climbed aboard Cruise’s vessel until the Coast Guard arrived.

A decade prior, it was Cruise himself who needed a hand. While filming Top Gun , he was dragged underwater by parachute lines. According to United Press International, Navy swim school instructors rushed to pull him out.

Shooting The Last Samurai with Cruise in 2003, director Ed Zwick was surprised to see several A-list directors dropping by the set to see Cruise. When the actor learned that David Fincher ( Fight Club ), Cameron Crowe (who directed Cruise in Jerry Maguire ), and others posed for a group photo with Zwick while he was busy, he asked that he be retroactively placed in the image.

To work with Tom Cruise is to risk being sent a cake every holiday for the rest of your life. (Or his.) Each year, the actor orders white chocolate coconut Bundt cakes from Doan’s Bakery in Los Angeles and has them sent to a list of recipients, including former co-stars. According to former talk show host James Corden, Cruise himself has never tried the cake. (Other stories, however, have him tasting it as part of a “cake-off” while Cruise’s then-wife Katie Holmes and Diane Keaton were making a film together in 2008. The cake was reportedly Keaton’s favorite.)

I Just Found Out Tom Cruise Was Originally Part Of The Brat Pack. So What Happened?

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The “Brat Pack,” a term coined during the rise of the decade of excess, evokes memories of some of the best films of the 1980s and a group of young actors who defined a generation. The core members of this group included some of the most iconic '80s actors and important '80s actresses such as Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Molly Ringwald, and others who starred in classics like The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo's Fire. However, it might surprise you to learn, because I just did, that Tom Cruise was once considered part of this illustrious group. So, what happened?

In a thought-provoking guest column for Deadline , Carl Kurlander, co-writer of St. Elmo's Fire , reflects on the origins of the Brat Pack. Kurlander explains that David Blum's infamous New York magazine article, which coined the name for the group, was inspired by a group of young actors who seemed to encapsulate the spirit of the rising MTV Generation. As the writer notes:

What went viral from the article where Blum created an imagined group of hot young actors who essentially had a club, and Emilio was its president. Rob was labelled ‘most beautiful face,’ Judd ‘the overrated one,’ Sean Penn ‘most gifted’ and Tom Cruise ‘the hottest one.’ It also included Tim Hutton as “the one with the Oscar.” Andrew seeks out Hutton for the film, calling him ‘The Godfather of The Brat Pack.’

This early grouping included the Mission: Impossible megastar, who was dubbed "the hottest one." However, Cruise's career trajectory quickly diverged from that of his peers. Kurlander explains:

Both Rob and Emilio got their big break when they were cast in Francis Coppola’s Outsiders with other unknowns including Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze and Tom Cruise, the latter of whom Andrew concedes transcended The Brat Pack label.

Cruise's departure from the Brat Pack can be attributed to his role choices and rising stardom. While other members of the core group were often cast in roles reflecting youthful rebellion and coming-of-age stories, the Cocktails star took on a variety of characters that showcased his versatility. By the mid-1980s, he was headlining blockbuster films such as Top Gun ; roles that helped establish him as a leading man in Hollywood.

With a Hulu subscription , you can watch the documentary Brats , directed by Andrew McCarthy, which revisits the era and offers insights into the group's legacy. McCarthy's film suggests that while Cruise was initially part of this group, he was not confined by the label. This distinction is critical in understanding his unique career path. Tom managed to avoid the typecasting that plagued many of his peers by continuously reinventing himself and choosing diverse roles across many genres.

The Brat Pack label, while emblematic of a significant moment in Hollywood history, became both a defining badge and a limiting descriptor for many of its members. For Cruise, it was a phase rather than a career-defining identity. His ability to transcend the group moniker speaks to his ambition and strategic career decisions.

Today, the Eyes Wide Shut actor stands as one of the most recognizable and successful action movie stars and actors globally. His filmography includes a range of iconic roles, from Jerry Maguire to one of the best modern-day action series , the Mission: Impossible franchise . While his early association with the Brat Pack is a fascinating footnote in his career, it highlights his exceptional ability to evolve and thrive in Hollywood's ever-changing landscape.

Tom Cruise has an extensive filmography, offering countless incredible performances across the decades to enjoy. However, if you want to revisit his early career and his brief association with the Brat Pack, check out the classic coming-of-age film The Outsiders (1983) . You can stream it with a Paramount+ subscription .

The Truth About Tom Cruise's Relationship With Suri

Tom Cruise on the red carpet

Tom Cruise  filmed "Misson: Impossible 7" and "Mission: Impossible 8" back to back, which kept him pretty busy. Still, the actor had time to take a break and take his rumored girlfriend Hayley Atwell to Wimbledon over the weekend of July 9, per Page Six . Atwell was Cruise's co-star in "Mission: Impossible 7," and the two reportedly grew close during the production of the film.

Speaking of the actor's long-public personal life, let's remind you that he has two adult children with ex-wife Nicole Kidman: Connor and Isabella. Cruise and Kidman adopted Connor and Isabella in the 1990s, per Hollywood Life . Cruise's other child, Suri, is his daughter with ex-wife Katie Holmes, and is his only biological child.

Over the years, there's been a lot of speculation about Cruise's relationship with Suri. Keep reading to find out the state of his relationship with his youngest child.

Does Tom Cruise ever see Suri Cruise?

In late October 2012, Life & Style reported that Tom Cruise had "abandoned" his daughter Suri. Cruise filed a $50 million lawsuit against the magazine's parent company, Bauer Media Group, per The Hollywood Reporter . At the time of the filing, his attorney said, "Tom is a caring father who dearly loves Suri. She's a vital part of his life and always will be." Cruise and Bauer settled the lawsuit for undisclosed terms in February 2013, according to  The Hollywood Reporter .

During the lawsuit, Tom Cruise admitted in court, per  People , that he hadn't seen his youngest daughter Suri Cruise in 100 days because of work commitments (though he noted they frequently spoke on the phone). In 2016, that number had grown to 1,000 days, per InTouch . At the time, a source said , "He's disconnected from [ex-wife] Katie [Holmes], and then de facto from Suri, because of her connection to Katie. He hasn't seen her since she was 7."

Today, Suri lives in Manhattan with her mother. Per The Sun , Suri's older half-siblings Isabella and Connor are Scientologists, but she is reportedly not. In 2019, Us Weekly reported that it had been several years since Cruise had seen Suri. Even more shocking is the idea that the Church of Scientology allegedly doesn't allow relationships with parents and their children who aren't Scientologists, as one former member claimed to Us Weekly (the church disputes this, however).

Did Tom Cruise give Suri a gift for her 13th birthday party?

Tom Cruise hadn't reportedly wanted to reach out to Suri Cruise for her 13th birthday, according to Hollywood Life  in 2019. "Tom does plan to send Suri a gift and call her on her birthday," revealed an anonymous source. The source also implied that Tom has struggled with his estrangement from Suri. "As challenging as things have become for him and his daughter, he still loves her," added the source. "[He] thinks about her all the time and will recognize that she is becoming a teenager and a young woman on her big day." Furthermore, the source claimed that Tom wanted to reconcile with Suri in the future. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem as if this reconciliation has happened over the past few years.

Fortunately, Suri has a village with her mother, Katie Holmes, who has a great support system of her own. Holmes previously revealed to People that she not only has her mother, but her friends to help her raise Suri. "I lean on them," shared Holmes. "For advice, for recipes, for all of that stuff: 'What am I supposed to do? Can you come over and watch? Can you be a helping hand?'" added Holmes. "And I do have help, yes, but ... it's your baby, you know? You want to be the one who is there."

Tom Cruise will probably pay for Suri's tuition

Even though Tom Cruise and Suri Cruise don't appear to have much of a relationship, he's still going to fund her college education, according to the Daily Mail . In March 2023, the outlet reported that 16-year-old Suri — who reportedly has her heart set on studying fashion — has been scouting around with her mom to find the perfect school. Tom will pick up the tab. The outlet cited Tom and Katie Holmes' hefty divorce settlement, which included language about Suri's college expenses. "Tom has always maintained his responsibilities when it comes to financial obligations to Katie and Suri," shared a source.

Unfortunately, Brooke Shields revealed another indicator that Tom and Suri may not be on the best terms. In March, Shields spoke with People and lamented about no longer receiving one of Tom's famous Christmas cakes that he gifts to his inner circle. However, she also accidentally revealed that Tom, Suri, and Katie Holmes used to give the cakes as a family. But he eventually removed them from the process. "It was from them and Suri, so it was the three of them, and then soon it was no Suri and no Katie and just Tom," Shields shared. "Then it went from just Tom for a while, but not every holiday. And then the cake stopped."
