Das Konzert in der Max-Schmeling-Halle am 17.03.2018 ist für uns leider eine Enttäuschung gewesen. Wanda ist zwar eine gute Band und wir mögen ihre Musik, eine so große Halle bekommen sie aber nicht beschallt. Mag ja sein, dass es im Innenraum für die 4.000 Besucher ein Hörerlebnis war, aber für die restlichen 7.000 auf den Rängen war es ein Witz. Da habe ich einen satteren Sound via einer kleinen Bose Box im Wohnzimmer. Zudem ist der Veranstalter eine Zumutung. In der Max-Schmeling-Halle wäre eine sitzplatzgenaue Reservierung der Tickets möglich, aber nichts da. Zudem war die Halle viel zu voll. Einfach nur schade.

Wanda Sykes will embark on her “Please & Thank You” comedy tour in 2024, the veteran stand-up comedian’s first major tour in six years, Variety can report exclusively.

The first 29 dates of the tour will begin on March 1 in Concord, N.H., and carry through June 15 in Kansas City, Mo., with more dates to be added into the fall. Artist presales will start on Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. local time, with tickets available to the general public on Oct. 27 at the same time, all on Sykes’ website.

For "Musikexpress", they are "perhaps the last important rock'n'roll band of our generation". For more than ten years, Wanda have been shaping their very own style with their mixture of rock, pop and profound lyrics. Following the release of their new album "Ende nie", the Austrians around frontman Marco Michael Wanda are now back on the road live - and will conclude their tour on 9 November 2024 in the Olympic Hall.

In 2014, they were the absolute high-flyers. With their debut album "Amore", the Viennese band reached number 2 in the Austro charts. The follow-up albums "Bussi" (2015), "Niente" (2017) and "Ciao" even took the top spot in the album rankings. Wanda also enjoyed great success in Germany, with the album "Wanda", released in 2022, reaching third place.

However, 2022 was also the year of a sad turning point, when keyboardist Christian Hummer died after a long, serious illness. Just a few months later, Marco Michael Wanda also lost his father in 2023. The band found their way out of the darkest and worst time of the past ten years through creativity - by composing and writing new songs such as "Bei niemand anders", which was released at the end of November 2023. Probably the most important song in the band's history, which Marco wrote shortly before his father's death. "When I was writing it, I realised that I wanted to use these lines to encourage everyone else who hears it. No matter what crisis they're in." With their sixth studio album "Ende nie", Wanda will go on a major tour of Germany again at the end of 2024 - with a finale on 9 November in the Olympic Hall that is sure to be both inspiring and touching.

‘WandaVision’ Finale Recap: Ending the Hex

The MCU series finished not with blockbuster cameos or shocking twists, but by zeroing in on the two characters who gave the show its title

“The Scarlet Witch is not born, she is forged.”

Through nine episodes of WandaVision , which concluded its first season on Friday, we watched as one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most neglected characters took the spotlight and became its most powerful. We watched as Wanda Maximoff was forged into the Scarlet Witch.

“It was always the design with these shows that they feel like a run of a comic,” showrunner Jac Schaeffer told The Hollywood Reporter in January—and after only nine issues, WandaVision has completed its run. Although there will likely be fans who are disappointed that the finale didn’t bring in the likes of Reed Richards, Professor Xavier, Clea, Mephisto, or whoever else came up during weeks of constant theorizing, WandaVision neatly tied up the MCU’s first Disney+ show by ending how it started: with Wanda and Vision. The series stirred up a chaotic discourse over its eight weeks, but ultimately stayed true to being a story about the love between a synthezoid and a grieving witch, while setting the standard for Marvel’s many TV shows to come.

But while WandaVision may be over, the Scarlet Witch’s story is only beginning. Wanda has confronted years of grief head-on (in a rather unhealthy way, but still) and now leaves Westview stronger than ever. Vision is alive yet again—well, sort of—and the twins have sadly vanished with the magic that was used to create them. But as Wanda and her Chaos Magic has proved: In the Marvel universe, death may not be the end.

For our final WandaVision recap, we’ll break down what happened in Westview one last time before taking a look ahead at what’s to come in the MCU.

What’s Really Happening?

The finale wastes no time jumping into the action, picking up right where we left off last week , with Agatha dangling Wanda’s children before her in the streets of Westview. In an instant, Wanda manages to overpower Agatha with her magic, allowing Billy and Tommy to speed away to safety—but it plays out as Agatha intended. The purple-clad witch tells Wanda that she “takes power from the undeserving,” and just as she did to her coven back in Salem, Agatha absorbs Wanda’s magic for herself. After Wanda launches her Buick Verano at Agatha (triggering a quick, if too on-the-nose, allusion to The Wizard of Oz ), White Vision drops in … and immediately tries to squeeze Wanda’s head like a grape.

What follows is somehow WandaVision ’s first full action sequence, as Vision swoops in to save his wife, and the two witches and synthezoids begin to fight each other in a classic MCU final battle. Director Hayward and Co. evidently programmed their weapon to kill Vision in addition to Wanda, and so the white synthezoid turns his focus toward eliminating his carbon copy. While the Visions are flying in the air, zapping and phasing in and out of each other, Wanda and Agatha head to the crowded town square, where Agatha takes a different approach.

In an attempt to show Wanda that she is the world-destroying force that was prophesied, Agatha severs Wanda’s mind control over Westview’s residents. One by one, Wanda’s sitcom neighbors return to their natural states, and turn toward Wanda in anger and terror. Dottie remembers that she’s actually Sarah, and begs Wanda to let her see her 8-year-old daughter again. Norm says that they all experience Wanda’s nightmares when she lets them sleep, while Mrs. Hart adds that Wanda is poisoning them with her grief. As Wanda becomes suffocated by everyone circling her and pleading for their lives, she loses control and accidentally uses her magic to choke everyone. She immediately frees them from her hold, but at long last, Wanda sees her sitcom reality for what it truly is. “Heroes don’t torture people,” Agatha chirps from a distance.

In response, Wanda begins to remove her hex around Westview so the townspeople can escape—but there’s a catch. Vision and the twins begin to disintegrate, just as Vision did when he tried to leave Westview. Agatha puts Wanda’s choice in plain terms: “Save Westview or save your family.” Wanda chooses her family, saving them before they perish but trapping the rest of the town once again, just as they’d finally been given hope of escaping. When S.W.O.R.D. arrives at the scene to add to the chaos, it becomes the Maximoff family against the world.

Meanwhile, Monica has been stuck on the sidelines at Agatha’s house, with Fake Pietro holding her captive. Before long, though, Monica solves a mystery that lingered for most of the season: Agnes’s missing husband, Ralph, was never a villain in waiting, but rather just some poor sap who happened to live in the house next door to Wanda’s plot of land. Removing his bewitched necklace and freeing him from Agatha’s hold, Monica makes her acquaintance with a lowly actor named Ralph ... Bohner. (I just have to say, what an incredible troll job by the WandaVision team here. Not only did Pietro have absolutely nothing to do with Evan Peters’s Quicksilver from the X-Men universe, but Agnes’s mysterious husband turned out to be some guy of zero consequence who basically boiled down to being a dick joke.)

Monica times her escape well. She enters the fray just as director Hayward, monster that he is, begins FIRING A GUN at Billy and Tommy. Using her recently acquired superpowers, Monica steps in front of the children and takes nearly every bullet in the chest, allowing each shell to harmlessly phase through her as if they’re passing through a bowl of very thick Jell-O. As Hayward doubles down on his attempt to kill kids, hopping in a military truck to run them over, Darcy Lewis—still driving around her incredible funnel cake truck—rams into him, committing apparent vehicular manslaughter but also saving the day.

As all the action converges in the town square, the Visions take their fight to the library—both literally and figuratively. White Vision ceases his attack when his pink counterpart explains the flaw in his directive to “destroy the Vision.” They begin to hover in a circle opposite one another and start chatting about identity metaphysics. Citing the “ Ship of Theseus ” thought experiment, Westview Vision helps his newly formed clone see that neither of them is actually the true Vision, but merely pieces of him. Westview Vision convinces White Vision to let him upload his original memories so he can experience them for himself, and that does the trick: White Vision sees their collective past—from flying in Sokovia to getting killed by Thanos—and accepts the fact that he, too, is Vision, if only a copy of him. With that, he simply flies off, never to be seen again. (Seriously, though, where the hell did this guy just go?! It’s as if he suddenly remembered he had left the stove on, like, 10 MCU movies ago, and rushed to turn it off before burning down the Avengers tower.)

After Wanda plays one of her old mind games with Agatha to pull them back to 1693 for a brief (and very creepy) reunion with Agatha’s coven in Salem, Wanda and Agatha take to the skies for one final duel. As Wanda hurls her magic at Agatha, letting her believe that she’s absorbing all of Wanda’s power, the student quickly becomes the master; just as Agatha taught her, Wanda’s “misfires” were incantations placing runes around the hex, preventing Agatha from using any magic herself. Reabsorbing her power, along with some of Agatha’s, Wanda transforms into the true Scarlet Witch:

With Agatha neutralized, Wanda chooses a fitting role for her as punishment: the nosy neighbor, Agnes. Wanda then begins the countdown on Westview, shuttering her hex around the town and finally putting a stop to all the pain and destruction she’s caused. The Maximoff family returns to their Westview home one last time to say their goodbyes. For Wanda and Vision, this time, at least they can do it on their own terms. Vision asks his creator what he is, and Wanda replies: “You, Vision, are the piece of the Mind Stone that lives in me. You are a body of wires, and blood, and bone, that I created. You are my sadness and my hope. But mostly, you’re my love.”

“I have been a voice with no body,” Vision says, referring to his past life as Tony Stark’s virtual assistant. “A body, but not human. But now, a memory made real. Who knows what I might be next?”

The hex comes to a close, consuming the Maximoff household with it, and bringing Wanda back to where it all started: an empty plot of land where she and Vision had hoped to build a new life together. After a final goodbye to Monica (as well as a deserved sea of death stares from all the Westview residents), Wanda flies off into the sunset and the season concludes.

After the Credits Roll

The first of two stingers focuses on Monica Rambeau. With Jimmy Woo and the FBI cleaning up the mess in Westview (including arresting Hayward for his terrible “Vision” pun), Monica is pulled aside by an agent who tells her that she’s needed in the movie theater. But the theater is completely empty. “I was sent by an old friend of your mother’s,” the agent says as her face shape-shifts into its natural alien form. “He heard you’ve been grounded. He’d like to meet with you.”

When Monica asks where, the Skrull simply points to the sky, earning a big smile from Rambeau in return.

While Monica’s supposedly mundane task of chaperoning an imaging drone to New Jersey turned out to be just a bit more interesting than anticipated, the S.W.O.R.D. agent can now return to space like she originally wanted. She grew up around Skrulls in Captain Marvel , and now, either the Skrull leader Talos or Nick Fury wants to catch up with her.

All of this works toward setting up the events of Captain Marvel 2 , and potentially the future Disney+ series Secret Invasion , which is set to star Samuel L. Jackson as Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as Talos. Now equipped with superpowers of her own, Monica will also reunite with Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel 2 . Maybe then we’ll find out what happened between Monica and her mother’s best friend that seemed to cause such a rift in their relationship.

Into the Multiverse of Madness

Though Doctor Strange never made a guest appearance in WandaVision , the Sorcerer Supreme did receive a shout-out in the series finale. When Agatha is telling Wanda what it means to be the Scarlet Witch, she says: “Your power exceeds that of the Sorcerer Supreme. It’s your destiny to destroy the world.” This comes after Agatha explains that there’s an entire chapter on the Scarlet Witch in the Darkhold , “the book of the damned,” which glowed ominously when Wanda discovered it in Agatha’s basement.

In the series’ last post-credits scene, we find Wanda making herself some tea in a remote cabin tucked away in a beautiful snowy mountain range. But as the camera pans past Wanda as she walks toward a screaming kettle, the Scarlet Witch is simultaneously in the bedroom, parsing through the Darkhold in the astral plane—a level of multitasking only previously performed by Stephen Strange. Before the scene comes to a close, the twins’ cries for help echo throughout the room.

As she promised Monica she would before leaving Westview, Wanda is learning more about her true powers, and she’s doing so from the book of the damned itself. Seeing how she’s already hopping into other dimensions, she’s clearly picking it up quickly. Wanda may not have broken the multiverse during WandaVision , but now she is learning dark magic, and seemingly searching for a way to bring her children back to life.

With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness a little more than a year away, Wanda may already be on her way to fulfilling that disastrous destiny, one that the Sorcerer Supreme will likely be tasked with preventing. “You have no idea what you’ve unleashed,” Agatha warned Wanda as she emerged from their battle wearing her Scarlet Witch costume for the first time in the MCU. As Wanda continues to dive deeper into the dark magic of the Darkhold , she doesn’t seem too concerned with Agatha’s words, choosing to gain more knowledge and power just as Agatha did centuries ago.

Though the end-credit scenes may look ahead at Marvel’s seemingly infinite future of films and, now, TV shows, WandaVision avoided any crowd-pleasing cameos from mutants, demons, or astrophysicists. Instead, it stayed its course to conclude a story of a deeply traumatized witch who lost her grip on reality. The show may have had its blemishes and hiccups while melding its quirky sitcom homages with traditional MCU fare. But led by Elizabeth Olsen’s phenomenal performance, WandaVision highlighted a character who is neither hero nor villain, and allowed the MCU to reach exciting, new heights.

After eight near-perfect episodes, the story of WandaVision has concluded with a finale installment that sticks the landing on all fronts , including multiple cinematic battles, several heartfelt goodbyes, and a long-overdue moment of agency for a heroine who has so often been denied a choice in her own future. 

But while “The Series Finale” is a deeply satisfying coda to what is probably Marvel’s most emotionally gratifying outing to date, it leaves us with more than a few questions about where these characters go from here. Let’s break down what happened in the WandaVision finale, and what it might mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward.

Wanda Transforms Into the Scarlet Witch

Thanks to Agatha’s pronouncement last week , we already knew that Wanda was the legendary Scarlet Witch but in “The Series Finale” we see her fully embrace her chaos magic , right down to an amazing contemporary riff on her traditional comics costume. (That headpiece! The cape! We love to see it!)

There’s even a return of the mind control visions we saw her deploy to such great effect in Avengers: Age of Ultron . What can’t this Wanda do?

Granted, we still don’t know what all this power now means for her character in a larger sense, but to be fair, neither does she. Wanda’s abilities as displayed in this episode are fairly tremendous, as she uses witch runes to neutralize Agatha, wipes her mind, and brings down the Hex she’s built around Westview, freeing its residents. 

In the episode’s post-credits scene , however, her abilities appear to have grown even further, as she’s able to take in a scenic lake view even as her astral self is also busy reading the Darkhold, right down to making its pages turn on their own. 

This is a move we’ve seen Stephen Strange pull before, but according to Agatha, Wanda is even more powerful than the Sorcerer Supreme. So….what else will she be able to do? That seems to be what she’s trying to find out.

Westview Returns to Normal (Sort of)

During her (quite frankly pretty badass) battle with Agatha, the older witch frees several Westview residents from Wanda’s mind control, forcing her to face what she’s done to the townspeople in her quest to build a perfect life. The simultaneously angry and desperate crowd of Westview residents – who look like nothing so much as a suburban take on a horde from The Walking Dead – confront Wanda and reveal a bit of what it must really be like as a person who lives under the town’s spell.  

The most harrowing victim is certainly town queen bee Dottie, who comes to herself long enough to beg Wanda to allow her to see her daughter, or perhaps write her into the larger storyline as one of the twins’ friends. But we also learn that Wanda has been projecting her grief and pain into Westview’s nightmares, forcing them to suffer right alongside her, rather than providing a peaceful, perfect escape. 

What Happened to Agatha Harkness?

At least one resident of Westview won’t be returning to normal, however. After Wanda defeats Agatha by scattering witch runes around the Westview Hex to neutralize her magic, she uses her own power to wipe Agatha’s memories and essentially turn her into nosy neighbor Agnes, the WandaVision “role she chose,” for good.

Your mileage may vary on whether this is an acceptable ending for Agatha – a character who was, admittedly, often monstrous, even though she was right about the way that society is all too willing, even eager, to vilify powerful women out of fear (and often just because it can). On the plus side, since nothing lasts forever in the Marvel Universe and Agatha Harkness is a pretty powerful witch in her own right, there’s every chance this character will reappear down the road. After all, Agatha was Wanda’s mentor in the comics and she tells Wanda here that her magical expertise will be needed in the future. 

We Said Goodbye to Wanda’s Kids (Or Did We?)

As products of the Hex, young Billy and Tommy Maximoff’s fates were always going to be tied to it, so in choosing to break the illusion, Wanda also accepts that she’ll have to say goodbye to her sons. In one of “The Series Finale’s” most heartbreaking scenes, she and Vision, knowing what’s coming, tuck the boys in for bed one last time, as the red glow of the shrinking boundary line edges closer to their house. 

Wanda also thanks the boys for choosing her as a mother. Reader, I cried. Plus, this basically confirms that Billy and Tommy aren’t entirely constructs of Wanda’s imagination. They’ve come from somewhere, and possess something like souls. How that all happened is anyone’s guess – here’s your entry point for Mephisto, folks! – and it’s something future series can explore, but it’s certainly the way I’d prefer to read it. 

But, since the last thing we hear on WandaVision is also the voices of Tommy and Billy shouting to their mother that something is wrong, it seems pretty likely we’ll see some version of these characters again. There’s precedent in the comics after all, and finding her lost boys is a pretty powerful narrative throughline to carry over to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness . 

What Happened to White Vision?

Paul Bettany’s dreams of essentially working with himself are realized, as Vision and the White Vision come to blows in the skies of Westview. But despite the epic battle between the synthezoids – or, synthezoid and Mind Stone-fueled recreation of that same original, as the case may be – physical combat isn’t the most compelling, or even interesting part of their encounter.

Instead, it’s philosophy. Yes, you read that right. Upon realizing that the two are too evenly matched for either to emerge victorious, Vision decides to engage the White Vision in a thought experiment about their shared existence, and whether either of them is truly the man (robot?) they claim to be. The two end up in a sort of pseudo-philosopher’s debate about The Ship of Theseus, a thought experiment centered on issues of identity and meaning, and what makes a thing real.  

This is surprisingly deep stuff for a Marvel property but the conversation contains tantalizing hints about what we could expect as we head into Phase 4 of the MCU. After all, it will likely contain stories full of magic, mutants, and transformation of all types; this is simply WandaVision giving us a metaphorical anchor to hang onto throughout. Well, that and providing a way to bring Vision – or some version of him – back for good, as Westview Vision restores White Vision’s memories and gives us all a reason to hope that he and Wanda will one day be reunited again.

Was the Vision in Westview Real? 

Yes and no. The Vision that lived in Westview and shared a house with Wanda wasn’t physically the Vision we’d previously seen in the Avengers films. He was a flesh and blood construct, created by Wanda’s power, informed by her grief memories, and born from the piece of the Mind Stone that lives inside her. (This makes sense, given that the rise of Wanda’s magical abilities was connected to her initial exposure to the Mind Stone. As Agatha puts it, the Scarlet Witch is forged, not born, and for Wanda, that crucible was her time with Hydra and the Infinity Stone that served as a sort of cosmic gasoline on her sleeping abilities that might never have stirred otherwise.) This Vision represents Wanda’s hope and sadness, but mostly her love. 

And, as a result, even Westview Vision doesn’t greet his oncoming demise with sadness, or even fear. Instead, he reasons, he and Wanda have been here before twice already, forced to say goodbye before their time. And since their relationship has survived before, there’s every reason to believe it will again, and they’ll find their way back to one another.

Monica’s Powers, the Skrulls, and Captain Marvel 2

Unfortunately, thanks to everything else going on in “The Series Finale,” Monica Rambeau doesn’t have a ton to do here. However, she does get a straight-up hero moment, where she throws herself in front of a bullet (or four) for Wanda’s kids and reveals a heretofore unseen ability to phase through objects and slow them down. She also frees the real Ralph Bohner, and happily helps send dirtbag SWORD director Tyler Hayward to prison. 

Happily, however, despite her limited screentime in this episode, Monica’s MCU future looks bright. In the mid-credits scene, she’s approached by a Skrull disguised as a SWORD agent who takes her aside and reveals she was sent by a friend of her late mother, Maria’s. And that friend, who is most likely Nick Fury, would like to see Monica – in space. 

We’d all basically assumed that Monica, who is Maria’s daughter and clearly has some as-yet-unprocessed resentment toward Carol Danvers, would be a significant player in the upcoming sequel Captain Marvel 2 , but perhaps there’s an even broader future in store for her, as part of the SWORD-like organization Fury and the Skrull named Talos formed at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home . 

Who Was the Fake Pietro Maximoff?

Sadly, the character played by Evan Peters in WandaVision was not actually Wanda’s brother Pietro ported over from the Fox X-Men universe like we all hoped. So yeah, unfortunately, that means mutants technically still do not exist in the MCU, and that’s a problem another movie or series will have to address.

While trapped in his self-described “man cave”, Monica discovers that the Fake Pietro is really just Ralph Bohner, the mysteriously absent husband Agnes was constantly complaining about throughout the season. Agatha kept him under her spell using an enchanted necklace, and when it was removed his real identity returns. Whether the fact that Agatha’s punishment to live as her Agnes identity involves being really married to Ralph is unclear but in Westview, anything is possible, I guess.

Wanda’s Future and Doctor Strange 2

Wanda has long been confirmed as a major player in the upcoming sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness , but we haven’t known how exactly she would fit into this story, having never exactly met Stephen Strange before. But since the WandaVision post-credits scene confirms that the new Scarlet Witch is determined to learn more about her powers, it seems that will change fairly quickly. The only question is how?

Stephen Strange has served as a mentor to many magic users throughout Marvel Comics history and could certainly be someone that Wanda seeks out to help her access and control her new abilities. But given that she’s also currently DIY-ing her knowledge of witch history with a magical item that is basically subtitled the “book of the damned,” it’s also very possible that she and Strange will end up at odds over the Darkhold’s existence, her possession of it, or both. Plus, there’s that interesting wrinkle of her still hearing the voices of her construct children that shouldn’t still exist outside of Westview thing. Time to explore the multiverse, anyone?

Why the Tour of Guangxi exists: Wanda’s vision for cycling in China

When the UCI first announced the Tour of Guangxi in late 2016, the general reaction was one of scepticism. Putting a new Chinese race straight onto the WorldTour calendar didn’t work out so well with the Tour of Beijing, so why would anything be different with the Tour of Guangxi?

One of the things that is different is the organisation running the event. Gone is the UCI’s ill-fated events management arm, Global Cycling Promotions. In its place is Wanda Sports, a division of one of China’s biggest companies, Dalian Wanda, and the owner of sporting brands like Ironman and Infront Media (owners of the Hammer Series).

In a sit-down interview with CyclingTips and Het Nieuwsblad, CEO of Wanda Sports China, David Yang, spoke of the challenges of getting the Tour of Guangxi off the ground, Wanda’s vision for cycling, and what the future might hold.

(The following interview has been edited for fluency and brevity.)

How much of a challenge was it to pull together the Tour of Guangxi?

Challenges lie in many aspects. When Wanda Group set its vision on cycling, one of the very first initiatives we started to undertake was we talked with the UCI. Believe it or not, in the very beginning there was a lot of scepticism around [the Tour of Guangxi] because they didn’t really see that China would have the kind of beautiful environment that you guys have seen.

They only realise “Oh Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, skyscrapers, air pollution, crowded … red lights all the time” — that’s what people’s impression was. So when we talked with the UCI they’re saying “Are you sure? How can you overcome the air pollution issue …?” Because there was an event in Beijing — it was not particularly successful.

So Wanda took a lot of efforts in convincing the UCI and we are very grateful that the UCI eventually actually were convinced and they saw the great potential in this sport in China. But more importantly they saw a great partner in Wanda Group.

So we were able to introduce Guangxi as not just a beautiful, very scenic region of China but more importantly [we could show] the support from the government. I think that’s really a very important ingredient for any large-scale sports event to be successful.

So through several meetings in different parts of the world, whether it’s in Zurich, or Lausanne, or in Doha — we went to the managing committee of the UCI — they were very open for us to make presentations to the members. And you know it’s a very complex organisation and we’re very grateful that eventually they agreed.

How long did it take to pull it all together, from start to finish?

The first conversation happened in March of 2016. Normally it would take much longer but that’s why there [was] a lot of scepticism — people were thinking “Can you really pull this off?” We said “Trust us.”

Now, you guys sit in a Wanda hotel [ed. The interview was conducted in a Wanda Realm hotel in Liuzhou after stage 4 of the Tour of Guangxi] — we have 100 hotels like this in China. Last year alone we built 50 Wanda Plazas and none of them missed the deadline. So we show them the video and how we build Wanda Malls, how we built Wanda theme parks — that’s a 30 billion RMB (AU$5.8 billion; US$4.5 billion) project for each one of them. There’s 13 of them in China — we never missed a single deadline. So we showed them all that and they said “Well, a cycling event seems to be easy, if you compare that with building this real estate!”

The irony is that in December of 2016 there was an official report from the UCI Road Commission saying “Oh my god, the road condition was not particularly good in Guangxi. We did the first round [checks] and David Yang you need to look at this — you know you need to work hard on this.” [And I thought] “Yeah, we need to work hard on that.”

And then six months later they came back again saying “Oh, things have changed quite dramatically! Maybe you have a good chance to pull it off!” And then three months after that they said “We’re there. We’re not worried anymore.”

What does Wanda Sports want to achieve with the Tour of Guangxi, and with cycling in China more generally?

Wanda Sports has a vision that we want to really promote people to appreciate sports more, and going beyond just what people traditionally do (i.e. table tennis or badminton). We want them to really appreciate more exciting sports, more popular sports in the world so they will ingrain themselves into the whole platform of the world sports.

So cycling is [like] triathlon or marathon or even others — even winter sports — that I think are not really as popular as they should be. So that’s why Wanda want to invite the best athletes in the world in those disciplines to come to China so that people can be really impacted.

What does Wanda Sports get out of that?

For us, if we really do those things well, we see this as a viable business model that we can deploy in the future. Because the more people who start doing cycling then our events will become more popular and then TV and digital media will provide more coverage and then hopefully economic benefits will be generated over time.

So why Guangxi? Why hold the race here? Is it the government support and the scenery, as you say, or is there more to it?

In the process of convincing the UCI we had to define a place that was not going to be plagued by air pollution. There are a few choices and Guangxi of course is among the better ones. And it’s easy — we don’t have to really do anything. You look at the sun, the breeze, the blue sky, the ocean, the mountains … it certainly stands out.

And [provincial] government support has been tremendous. They spent 2 billion RMB (AU$390 million; US$300 million) in the process and … paved the roads and got it into shape. You saw the police — you saw the safety. You saw the people — the passion, they are cheering all the way. It’s pretty amazing. Some people are saying “David, it kind of reminds me of the Tour de France because you see we’re in a rural area — they just really treat this as a festival.”

And then the third element … is we really see the hunger of our people. They are really dying for world-class sports events. They really want to get their fingers on this. I think the inspiration factor is very very important because you want younger generations, you want people who didn’t really have access to cycling as a sport, to have the feel, have the appreciation of the sport. Then they probably can really grow up as a cyclist and become a cyclist to compete.

Will Wanda create cycling events for amateurs, as well as professionals, creating a sort-of pyramid of cycling participation in China?

Yes, definitely. That’s a very good point you touched upon. We are thinking about another event called a Velothon. It’s also a UCI-granted concept. It’s more likely we do that in the bigger cities and then probably more around a city and then get more people involved and more amateurs.

You can see … a lot of amateur cyclists come here just to follow the race — their own helmets, their own jersey and ride their own bikes. Those guys are dying to get on the track. So what we’re going to do is invite of course the elite athletes to come in and at the same time lead mass participation. So that’s our goal.

We are trying to do at least one, maybe even two, in 2018 and even more in the future. And I think it’s very very important for people to really get the pulse of this sport. Not just kind of watch — they need to participate.

Wanda Sports has a five-year contract with the UCI to run this race. Do you see Wanda Sports’ involvement in cycling existing beyond that?

Yes. Definitely. Because the more I practice cycling, the more I appreciate it. And now I’ve got my wife started doing it. So every Saturday my wife and I go to the gym and we do the spin class. We have every time 24 of us getting on a bike and we’re doing all the different programs. Before, after only three minutes I was done; now I’m about 45 minutes and I’m still riding.

It’s just a great sport. And nobody knows! I would say that in China a very small percentage of the population would appreciate that. People don’t really have a chance to appreciate it.

You have the Tour of Guangxi, you already have a stake in the Tour de Suisse. Are other projects on the horizon for Wanda Sports when it comes to road racing in Europe? [ed. There have been rumours of Wanda buying the Tour de France from ASO]

We had interesting discussions with different parties and even with Yann [Le Moenner], the CEO of ASO. I’d say he’s a very good person, a very good professional. I got to know him last time I was in Paris and we had a great conversation about potential cooperations in many many different aspects.

I think the Tour de France has a very special place in the sport of cycling. No one can replace that. Because of the Tour de France cycling can become such a popular sport. Being a cycling sports lover, I kind of respect that and I really appreciate that. So I hope that we can really learn a lot from those guys. I have sent delegations to go to watch and we can certainly do that.

And then Tour de Suisse has been successful and we are trying to work out a better calendar position but in the meanwhile we have Ironman, we have Infront — we are really doing a lot of stuff. And Andrew Messick, who is actually CEO of World Triathlon Corp, used to run the Tour of California for several years. So he’s a passionate cyclist. So we are looking for opportunities to do more.

One of the things that’s different about the Tour of Guangxi is the massive numbers of security staff on the side of the road. Can you explain the philosophy behind that?

It’s a dilemma, frankly. People say “Oh, David, good job on the safety side.” At the same time I cringe — it consumes a lot of public resources. If they [the Guangxi provincial government] ask Wanda to pay for everything, I would be broke tomorrow. That will not become viable anymore. So for us we have to find ways to find a middle ground somewhere.

I think today if you ask me this question I think Guangxi government has done an excellent job. I was talking actually this morning [with] the head of Guangxi province’s security. He said “David, are you happy?” I said “I’m happy.” He said “I’m glad you’re happy, but at the same time do you know how much I’ve put in?! If you do this every single year I will have more grey hair! You cannot let this happen so intensively.”

I said “Don’t worry — this is a process. Why is the Tour de France so successful but it requires much less, maybe, monetary-wise investment from the government? Because people are used to it. Every year they know what they expect. They can really cheer for the peloton, they can cheer for the leaders, but at same time they wouldn’t hurt riders; they wouldn’t cause any problems.

“Those guys grew up … when they were five years old the boys and girls were standing by the roadside to watch. And here, you look at people — they’ve never seen this before. Not in 100 years they have seen this, seriously. So this is a process.”

So what we’re hoping for … we want to do it long term because the longer term we do this, the easier the process can become. And then you see the people — this year they’re all cheering for it, next year they will cheer for it but they wouldn’t really try to cross the road right before the race comes in! So this is an educational process.

But some fans at the Tour de France still cause trouble by getting too close to the riders, perhaps when they’ve had a bit too much to drink …

We all have different issues. Over there, it’s maybe a little more an alcohol issue. Here it’s more like people are too eager to jump ahead [of the riders]. I think that little string of security helps, but I think the number of [security staff] we should use should come down over time.

Right now you see, especially in cities, almost every 10 meters you have a volunteer standing there — they’re not real police. They’re just kind of wearing a … they’re not real police. We have a lot of volunteers. But the next year we’ll hopefully [have them] not 10 metres [apart]; maybe 100 metres.

Do you have an idea of roughly how many people are involved in security at the race? It must be in the thousands or tens of thousands?

No. I wouldn’t even dare to guess.

Is there a chance we could see the Tour of Guangxi expand beyond six days in the future?

For us, of course, we take it one step at a time. So even now, today is the fourth day — it’s too early to talk about success yet. We still have two more days to go. We have the UCI Gala to be held in almost 48 hours. So we take one step at a time and we’re sure that will be a much bigger scale in the future.

Of course Tour of Guangxi itself is six days, but there could be another tour in some other part of China. We’ve already received a lot of positive feedback from other parts of China and other provinces saying “Why can’t we have it?”

Even today I was watching the internet … there’s so many positive comments. Even from the local residents in their local cities they would say “Gosh, I have never even realised how beautiful my city is. I’ve lived here for 20 years and I didn’t really appreciate the beauty.”

Because when people see it on TV or on digital media, they see the helicopter, the birds-view of the city … oh my god. That really triggers a lot of pride. I’m sure other parts of China, the governments, will probably think the same way.

Church domes are visible like mushrooms from anywhere and everywhere in the town like in a fairy tale. No wonder Suzdal is called the ‘Town Museum”.  It is definitely worth visiting!
