The same athleticism, excitement and revelry of the iconic Tour de France can be experienced in Las Vegas once again this May. L’Étape Las Vegas by Tour de France offers amateur cyclists the opportunity to compete for the same glory the world’s best peloton—or group of cyclists—vie for each year across the Atlantic.

And what’s better than exhibiting your cycling skills in the Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World? The destination has world-class restaurants to fuel up at, tranquil and serene spas for post-race relaxation, and amazing productions and nightlife to take in during the proverbial victory lap while celebrating how you tackled the course with vigor and determination.

L’Étape Las Vegas Race Basics

Taking place Sunday, May 5, this year’s race kicks off in Summerlin at Las Vegas Ballpark . The three racecourses—75-mile, 45-mile and 25-mile—have been designed by Tour de France experts, with all routes heading west into the scenic and dynamic Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

The varying courses are designed to offer cyclists of all abilities, from first-time racers to seasoned athletes, the opportunity to have this extremely special experience.

The 75-mile course features 6,000 feet of elevation.

The 45-mile course features 3,035 feet of elevation.

The 25-mile course features 2,260 feet of elevation.

Cyclists can rest easy knowing that the courses are supported by closed roads, mechanical support, and hydration and nutrition stations.

For the avid cyclist or cycling enthusiast, you know how coveted the yellow Tour de France jersey is. The top finishers in the 75-mile course will receive exactly that—how exciting!

Things to Do in Las Vegas While You’re Here

Whether it’s some pre-race pampering or post-race recovery, Lapis Spa & Wellness at Fontainebleau Las Vegas is here for you. Massages, facials, wraps—whatever you seek, this serene sanctuary features the industry’s latest and greatest treatments.

European and Eastern rituals guide the treatments at Awana Spa inside Resorts World Las Vegas, which offers a variety of options with a uniquely social approach. Be invigorated (and maybe even inspired) at the tranquil space offering the usual menu of massage, wraps and facials alongside interesting experiences like the Fountain of Youth and Art of Aufguss.

Just a short ride from the race’s starting line is Pedal & Pour , a coffee shop geared toward cyclists. Get caffeinated with a cup from local coffee mainstay Vesta Coffee Roasters, get your bike serviced and shop for some new gear!

TruFusion is a fitness studio in Downtown Summerlin offering several courses including a cycling class you no doubt will dominate. It might be a great warm-up to get you ready for race day. You also could opt for a yoga session to boost focus or a boot camp class to get you in tip-top shape. Plus, it’s just a short walk from the race’s starting line!

If you prefer sticking to the real thing, you could always show up a day or so early and give the course at Red Rock National Conservation Area a leisurely shot to see what you’re in for. Plus, instead of focusing on beating your personal record, you can take the time to enjoy the gorgeous sandstone rock formations and surrounding natural beauty of this breathtaking piece of the Mojave Desert.

Where to Fuel Up Before (or After) the Race

While Summer House at the recently opened Durango Casino & Resort does offer some more comforting options, its California-inspired menu has several fresh and nutrition-conscious selections. Go for a delicious kale salad with gala apples and aged balsamic, or order a spread of veggie plates like grilled avocado, shishito peppers and wood-grilled artichokes.

SkinnyFATS is a fun-loving eatery with both “healthy” and “happy” menu options (you get the name now, right?). From ahi poke and curry rice bowls to slow-roasted sweet potatoes and veggie sandwiches, there’s something to satisfy everyone at this restaurant, which conveniently has a location near the race’s starting line within Downtown Summerlin.

The Strip also offers delightful dining ideal for athletes seeking fuel with flavor. Zen Kitchen at Waldorf Astoria offers seatings for breakfast/lunch and a dinner, with every meal featuring a mix of light fare and comfort foods. Dinner offers a fabulous selection of sushi and sashimi alongside steaks and elevated mains such as Icelandic king salmon and a spring garden yakisoba dish perfect for carb-ing up!

If you seek a completely nutritious meal, Truth & Tonic at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas is exactly where to book a reservation. The full-vegan wellness café features a variety of nutrient-dense, plant-based offerings including salads and smoothies.

Whether you’re following the keto or paleo diets, sticking to vegan and vegetarian options, or just wanting something fresh and fabulous, True Food Kitchen inside The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace is calling your name. Explore its expansive, seasonal menu of dishes made with high-quality ingredients.

Where to Celebrate

Enjoy amazing views and fabulous entertainment at the center-Strip rooftop Drai’s Nightclub at The Cromwell. R&B/pop star Ne-Yo is set to give an incredible performance the night of the race.

Party poolside at XS Nightclub inside Wynn Las Vegas. The indoor/outdoor hot spot offers delicious cocktails, an electric energy and sets from the globe’s top DJs. RÜFÜS DU SOL will be behind the booth the night of the race, so put those dancing shoes on!

You’ve been training for weeks for the race, likely also eating healthy and skipping dessert. It’s time to let loose with a lip-smacking cocktail, a sweet treat and even sweeter beats. Do just that at We All Scream , where an ice cream parlor meets a high-energy nightclub and music venue with psychedelic decor perfect for those celebratory selfies you’re going to take.

Want to celebrate with some competition that’s a bit more … casual? Don’t want to dance after cycling all day? Head to Level Up at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, where you can play arcade games with—or against—your crew, catch the night’s best games on TV and indulge in craft cocktails.

However you spend time in Las Vegas for such an exciting event like L’Étape Las Vegas, you know it’s going to be a trip for the books. Get your Las Vegas itinerary settled with this 2024 trip planning guide and if you haven’t booked that room, check out these hotel deals .

There will be three course options in 2024 for novice level riders to advanced cycling enthusiasts. The L’Étape Las Vegas 75-mile event is the ultimate cycling challenge, with the route based on a similar format to a genuine Tour de France stage. One of the enhancements made in 2024, is the new start & finish location from the Las Vegas Ballpark in Summerlin. The course will then head west into the famous Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and include some smaller climbs and inclines on a fully closed cycling course.

“Las Vegas provides a unique backdrop for special events, and L’Étape Las Vegas is another outstanding addition to our annual event roster,” said Las Vegas Events President Tim Keener. “All ability levels of cyclists will be able to test their skills on our closed race courses, with the start and finish line right in the heart of Downtown Summerlin at Las Vegas Ballpark. We look forward to welcoming the cyclists from across the globe in May, where they can expect Las Vegas hospitality and an average temperature of 84 degrees.”

The first 500 new registrants will receive a custom L’Étape Las Vegas Cycling Jersey.

A New Tour de France Event Is Coming to Las Vegas in 2023

The two-day event will offer 75, 50, and 25-mile options designed to provide everyone with a “Tour de France-level experience.”

las vegas boulevard, central

  • Tour de France’s fondo-style L’Étape ride is adding a second U.S. destination to the calendar.
  • L’Étape Las Vegas by Tour de France will be held May 13-14, 2023.

There will be three route options for the two-day event: 75, 50, and 25-mile options, with additional kid and family rides happening throughout the weekend.

It’s the second event in the U.S. run by L’Étape by Tour de France : The other fondo-style event takes place in San Antonio in May. The events are designed to provide everyone with a “Tour de France-level experience.” Worldwide, there are about two dozen L’Étape events in Europe, South America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania.

“As an avid cyclist, this is so exciting to bring an internationally recognized brand, Tour de France, to our community,” Clark County Commissioner Justin Jones told Fox News .

It’s not a shock that Las Vegas would be ideal for hosting such an event. The city is no stranger to major cycling events: For years, it was the host city for Interbike, one of the biggest cycling industry trade shows in the world, and it was also home to the legendary CrossVegas cyclocross race. CrossVegas was the setting of the first cyclocross World Cup in the U.S., hosted in 2015, and has hosted legendary racers like Sven Nys and Sanne Cant. CrossVegas also hosted the more dubious cycling legend Lance Armstrong, who raced in 2008 and finished mid-pack .

Las Vegas is, in parts, incredibly bike-friendly with paved, protected bike paths, or wildly dangerous for riders, depending on where you are in the city. While the city itself is surprisingly psyched on cycling and has built up a great collection of bike paths and MTB trails just outside of the city, it’s also seen its share of tragedy. In December of 2020, five cyclists were killed by a drunk driver when his box truck slammed into a 20-person group ride. Since then, a memorial ride in December remembers the riders who were lost.

The L’Étape route will reportedly run from the Las Vegas Ballpark toward Red Rock Canyon. It’s being run in partnership with Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, Las Vegas Ballpark, Clark County and Southern Nevada Bicycling Coalition.

L'Étape by Tour de France coming to Las Vegas in 2023

Sportive will run through Sin City and scenic Red Rock Canyon

Riders traversing Red Rock Canyon outside Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas will become the second U.S. destination to host a L’Étape by Tour de France event in spring of 2023.

Held in 21 countries across the world,  L'Étape by Tour de France is a Gran Fondo series organized by the Tour de France brand aimed at offering “amateur cyclists the ability to ride or race a stage of the Tour de France in their own backyard.”

Gran Fondos, also known as Sportives, are mass participation cycling events that, much like a running marathon, are a race for some and a fun, personal challenge for others.

The L'Étape by Tour de France routes are designed by Tour de France experts and held on closed courses. For the full Tour de France racing experience, there are official podium ceremonies held at the end of each event, complete with authentic Tour de France jerseys . The jerseys will be yellow for the race winner, white-and-red polka dots for the winner of the best climber classification, and green for those fastest through the timed sprint sections on the course. There’s even a ‘fan fest’ designed after the Village Départ.

San Antonio, Texas, became the first U.S. city to host an official Tour de France Sportive for the first time just last month. More than two thousand cyclists attended the inaugural event, and were joined by two-time Tour de France winner and official Tour de France ambassador, Alberto Contador .

A local news channel reports Las Vegas event will be held across two days, May 13-14, 2023, and will take riders from the Las Vegas Ballpark into the scenic Red Rock Canyon. There will be three routes on offer: a 25-mile beginner-friendly route, a 50-miler and a 75-mile challenge.

As she competed at the elite level, her journalism career followed, and soon she became a full-time cycling journalist. She's now been a cycling journalist for 11 years.

Tour de France event coming to Las Vegas in 2023

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - An event by the group behind the iconic Tour de France will be held in Las Vegas next year.

According to a news release, L’Étape by Tour de France “offers amateur cyclists the ability to race or ride a stage of the Tour de France in their own back yard.”

The event will be held May 13-14, 2023. Organizers say that riders will launch from the Las Vegas Ballpark and head west into the scenic Red Rock Canyon.

“As an avid cyclist this is so exciting to bring an internationally recognized brand, Tour de France, to our community,” Clark County Commissioner Justin Jones said.

The routes will weave through District F including Red Rock, Summerlin and Potosi. L’Étape by Tour de France says it will feature 75-mile, 50-mile, and 25-mile route options, along with family and kids rides.

“I think when you have a world wide brand like Tour de France and they’re looking at the United States, they wanted to come here to Las Vegas to continue that reputation as the world’s sports capital,” Jones said.

This announcement comes just a month after Formula 1 announced plans to host a race on the Las Vegas Strip.

San Antonio is the only other U.S. city to host the unique Tour de France event.

Those taking part will compete for an authentic Yellow Jersey and will get the chance to ride with a Tour de France champion, according to the release.

Attendees can also enjoy a fan fest at the Ballpark that will be patterned after the Village Départ, the legendary gathering point for the Tour de France.

Cyclists react: Tour de France coming to Las Vegas

vegas tour de france

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Avid Cyclists in Las Vegas keep track of Tour de France developments all year long, and some couldn't believe the tour would bring their international attention to Las Vegas for a two day event in 2023.

Deb Hawkins has been a road cyclist for years, and said the newly announced L'Etape Las Vegas races was very exciting news.

"I think it should have been done a long time ago," Hawkins said. "We actually keep the map on our wall that's set for the next year, pegged for all the sections and stages."

Hawkins said, as a front-line nurse, cycling helped her and several of her coworkers keep it together as the pandemic upended thousands of lives.

"The biggest outlet was bicycling," she said. "I can't tell you how many referrals. I told people, I want you to go to the bicycle shop, get out on your bike, it's the only thing you can do."

Hawkins said she believes the tour's plan to get Las Vegas cyclists ranging from veterans to amateurs involved in three races starting at the Las Vegas Ballpark with a chance to ride with a Tour de France champion on the line could bolster interest in the valley's already thriving cyclist scene.

It could also help the workers at her favorite shop, Pro Cyclery, whom she calls family.

"It's exciting," employee Justin Caramanica said.

Carimanica said any attention brought to cycling in Las Vegas could help boost sales at the locally owned shop.

"Anything that brings more people into the sport, brings more people into local mom and pop shops like ours, is a good thing for cycling," he said.

The L'Etpe Las Vegas will roll into Las Vegas on May 13 and 14 of 2023.

HOW TO WATCH

vegas tour de france

Everything you need to know about the second season of Netflix Tour de France: Unchained

S treaming platform Netflix has released the second s eason of its first-of-its-kind documentary series about the Tour de France . It will came out 11 June at 08:00 in the UK. This equates to 03:00 US east coast time, midnight on the US west coast, and 17:00 in Sydney, Australia.

Titled 'Tour de France: Unchained', or 'Tour de France: Au cœur du peloton' ('Inside the peloton') in French, here's everything you need to know about it.

The big news is that this year's series features Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and Mark Cavendish (Astana-Qazaqstan) as well as the stars of season one.

What is it?

Tour de France: Unchained is the second season of a Netflix documentary series that tells the story of the 2023 Tour de France.

The initial news of its production came in March 2022, with camera crews then embedding within seven teams at the race. Created as part of a joint venture between Quadbox and Box to Box Films, the makers of F1: Drive to Survive, the series offers exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to the highs and lows of the Tour de France. France Télévisions also contributed to the production.

The second season consists of eight episodes, each lasting around 40 minutes. Below is a chart of the episode titles, and which teams they are focused on. However, it is less structured than last year, so most episodes contain many different narratives.

What's it like?

Our very own Adam Becket reviewed the first season, concluding: "It's a thrilling watch for both those who know cycling, and those who are new to the sport. It might prove too general for the committed fan, but there is something for everyone."

"There are flaws, with the absence of Pogačar the biggest, and it appearing surface level at times," he writes. "However, professional cycling is a confusing sport, and  Unchained  does an excellent job of breaking down the barriers to entry to show just how enthralling it is."

Who's involved?

It was originally understood that eight teams had given exclusive access to Netflix camera crews for the series. These were: AG2R Citroën, Alpecin-Deceuninck, Bora-Hansgrohe, EF Education-EasyPost, Groupama-FDJ, Ineos Grenadiers, Jumbo-Visma and Soudal Quick-Step.

Netflix’s Tour de France: Unchained 's second season also includes Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates and Mark Cavendish of Astana-Qazaqstan. The UAE team are featured quite heavily, in an update from the first season.

As part of the series, the teams’ managers have undergone sit-down interviews, much like those in the F1: Drive to Survive episodes. These include Groupama-FDJ's Marc Madiot and EF Education-EasyPost's Jonathan Vaughters.

A number of journalists, working across various outlets around the world, have also been interviewed for the series. Among them is Eurosport presenter Orla Chennaoui, who revealed her involvement on her Instagram page.

What do we already know about it?

The producers of the series released a teaser trailer for the second season last month. In it, questions over doping and "scandals" appeared, as well as lots of footage of crashes.

A clip shows last year’s winner,  Jonas Vingegaard , walking to his team bus while a narrator speaks of "scandal", before a second clip shows the recently retired  Thibaut Pinot  being asked if he thinks an unnamed rider is doping.

Of course, the story of the race, won by Jumbo-Visma’s Vingegaard, will already be well known to cycling fans.

When will it be released?

The series has been available to stream on Netflix on 11 June. This came a week after the Critérium du Dauphiné , the key precursor stage race to the Tour.

Unchained is available in 190 territories, and was released at 08:00 in the UK. This equates to 03:00 US east coast time, midnight on the US west coast, and 17:00 in Sydney, Australia.

You can access it here on Netflix's website .

How much did it cost?

According to reports, for the first season, Netflix covered the production costs of €8 million to make the series, paying a total of €1 million to the different parties involved. The participating teams are understood to have been given around €62,000 each.

Will there be a third season?

It is unknown at this stage whether there will be a third season, covering the 2024 race, but it should be pretty clear to judge come the Tour de France, with the camera crews standing out by each team taking part. It is therefore unknown which teams and riders will be taking part.

Have Netflix produced Tour de France documentaries before?

Tour de France: Unchained is Netflix’s first official docuseries about the French Grand Tour.

The streaming platform has, however, produced three seasons of a fly-on-the-wall series about the Movistar team, titled ‘The Least Expected Day’, covering the squad’s 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Similar docuseries have been made about WorldTour teams Soudal Quick-Step, Jumbo-Visma and SD Worx for Amazon Prime.

Opinion: 5 reasons why tadej pogačar will win the tour de france, pogačar is halfway to history to become the first rider since marco pantani to complete the giro-tour double, and there's no one who can stop him..

Tadej Pogačar is halfway to history, and looks poised to become the first rider since Marco Pantani in 1998 to win the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France in the same season.

The Slovenian star bulldozed his way to victory at the Giro by dominating the racing every single day. The statistics reflect the imperious rule the 25-year-old imposed on the “corsa rosa.” Six stage wins, 20 days in pink, and the biggest winning margin since the 1960s.

What’s next?

After taking a break to recover from the Giro, Pogačar will hit altitude at Isola 2000 in the southern Alps to keep the wheels spinning before the Tour starts June 29 in Florence, Italy.

All things point toward the historical Pantani mark. Who or what can beat him? Right now, destiny seems to be on Pogačar’s side.

Here are five reasons why Pogačar will pull off the Giro-Tour double.

1. Pogačar raced the near-perfect Giro

Dario Belingheri/Getty Images

First things first, Pogačar had to win the Giro, and he pulled off a near-perfect race.

Of his six grand tour starts since 2019, this Giro was perhaps Pogačar’s most balanced, all-round effort. He dominated the Giro from start to finish, setting the tone and pace right from the very first stage, and raced three weeks largely unchallenged .

UAE Team Emirates did its job to protect him on the flats and deliver him to the key moments of the race without putting Pogačar into the wind.

And Pogačar paid them back with six stage wins, and three more top-3 podiums. And despite cat-calls that he was being a cannibal and too greedy, Pogačar was quite sensible across this Giro.

In the past, he’s sometimes spent too much energy chasing unnecessary stage wins and results, especially at the Tour de France, when that over-eagerness might have cost him the yellow jersey in 2022.

A dream come true. Thanks to everybody who made it possible. Grazie Mille Italia❤️ pic.twitter.com/jOxPlimMnF — Tadej Pogačar (@TamauPogi) May 26, 2024

UAE Team Emirates and Pogačar hatched a plan for this Giro — to attack early to gain a comfortable lead — and they pulled it off without a hitch.

The weather helped, too. Despite a few cold days in the final week, the first two weeks of racing were contested under relatively mild racing conditions, meaning that Pogačar wasn’t burning unnecessary matches to stay healthy.

Pogačar also avoided crashes and spills, and was never caught out by a rogue attack that might have scrambled the GC playbook.

Despite a three-week grand tour full of traps and obstacles, Pogačar raced across Italy suffering only one puncture and one minor spill.

A relatively easy Giro — if there is such a thing — will help him recovery faster and ease into the Tour with the best chances for the double.

2. Pogačar didn’t go too deep

Pogacar

Despite his domination, or perhaps because he was so strong , Pogačar never went too deep to win the maglia rosa .

Though no one has the direct line on his power meter, Pogačar never appeared to go into the red or over-extend himself at any moment during this Giro. Most of his winning attacks seemed to be safely inside the realm of a laser-guided 20-minute effort .

His biggest moves also came at precise moments to have maximum effect, and he seemed to be able to handle the big efforts in the key mountain stages as if he were on an intense training camp.

Nothing against his direct rivals, but the likes of Daniel Martínez (Bora Hansgrohe) or Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) never had the legs to take it directly to Pogačar . And the rest of the top-10 was full of riders who, let’s be honest, are never going to win a grand tour outright.

That meant Pogačar could extract maximum gains with minimal effort.

The team’s coaching staff built the Giro-Tour double into Pogačar’s calendar already late last year. That means that everything was calibrated going forward to see Pogačar leave the Giro without being overly extended.

Well, we made it to Rome A fifth Grand Tour podium and one of my proudest. Of course we came here to win, but sometimes you have to hold up your hands to greatness. It’s an honour to race against Tadej. Chapeau mate, and chapeau Dani #Giro #grazie pic.twitter.com/hzdCSglf2M — Geraint Thomas (@GeraintThomas86) May 27, 2024

Before the Giro, he skipped the punishing cobbled classics and the sponsor-friendly UAE Tour to hit the Giro with only 10 days of racing.

Previous Giro-Tour double attempts have seen riders come out of the Giro ragged and worn after scraping through a hard-fought fight for pink that continued into the final week, with those efforts later costing them in the back half of the Tour.

Pogačar seemed to glide across May, and that will help shuttle him toward Florence next month in optimum condition.

Without burying himself in May, Pogačar might be able to have the legs when it counts in the back-half of a much more challenging Tour.

3. No one can beat him at the Tour de France

Evenepoel Vingegaard

What should have been a once in a generation showdown at the Tour this summer took a massive blow in the horrendous Itzulia Basque Country crash in early April that saw three of the “Big 4” suffer potentially career-altering injuries.

Instead of seeing Pogačar face off against Jonas Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel and Primož Roglič in full splendor, the others will be entering the Tour hobbled at best.

There is still a question mark over Vingegaard being at the start line, and if he does make it, it’s very likely he won’t be at 100 percent to race for a third consecutive title. The Dane, backed by a stacked Jumbo-Visma in 2022 and 2023, was the only rider who broke the “Pogačar Code.”

Slovenian Grand Tour overall victories 1909-2018: 0 2019-2024: 7 — CafeRoubaix (@CafeRoubaix) May 26, 2024

Without Vingegaard at top form, all eyes will turn to Evenepoel and Roglič.

Evenepoel seems to have recovered from his broken bones and surgery, but missing out on a few weeks of training in the key weeks and months ahead of the Tour will be felt. Even at his best, the Belgian star would have a hard time matching Pogačar’s explosive power in the high mountains.

Despite his sky high personal confidence, Evenepoel and Soudal Quick-Step will also be out-gunned by superteams UAE and Visma-Lease a Bike. He’s already tamping down expectations and said a podium in his Tour debut would be a welcome result.

Roglič came out of the Itzulia nightmare with the least damage, so the Slovenian veteran could emerge as Pogačar’s most dangerous direct rival.

He simply has the most to chase at this Tour. At 34, time is running out for Roglič, even if he did come late to the sport. Now with Bora-Hansgrohe, Roglič will be looking to avenge his 2020 Tour loss, but question marks remain. The Critérium du Dauphiné next week should tell us more.

Is there anyone else who can beat Pogačar? Not likely. A rider like Carlos Rodríguez or Richard Carapaz might be able to stay close in the mountains, but they’ll be shellacked in the time trials.

There’s a risk of counting victory too soon, but Pogačar confirmed during the Giro he will focus on what’s directly in front of him without looking too far down the road.

4. Pogačar is at his physical peak

Pogačar

Another key factor tilting in Pogačar’s favor for the Tour will be that he’s attempting the Giro-Tour double at the height of his powers.

Over the last 25 years, many of the top contenders for the double often left it too late or didn’t even bother. Lance Armstrong never tried to race the Giro during his now-disqualified seven-straight Tour wins. Others, like Alberto Contador, never raced the double at peak form because the Tour de France simply holds so much importance to sponsors.

Chris Froome , who was the king of the Tour during the previous decade, never dared to race the Giro until 2018.

By then, Froome had already won four yellow jerseys, and reluctantly took on the double to check off the Giro box. He had to go so deep to win the Giro, however, that it cost him later at the Tour, when he finished third on the podium behind teammate Geraint Thomas and Tom Dumoulin.

Other Giro-Tour attempts were either almost accidental, in that a Giro winner would race the Tour out of obligation to a sponsor, or perhaps came from a rider who won the Giro but never really stood the chance to win the yellow jersey in the first place.

Tadej Pogacar in six Grand Tour starts: 3-1-1-2-2-1 20 stage victories 41 leader’s jerseys — CafeRoubaix (@CafeRoubaix) May 25, 2024

What’s different about Pogačar taking on the Giro-Tour double right now is that he is at his physical peak.

His double attempt is not a late-career challenge, but instead it’s coming just when Pogačar is looking better than ever.

Across the Giro, Pogačar looked leaner and more focused than at any point of his already prodigious career. At 25, he’s hitting near maturity that is showing up in interesting ways.

Pogačar in 2024 is more akin to Miguel Induráin winning the Giro-Tour double two years in a row in 1992 and 1993 when “Big Mig” was truly coming into his own.

And let’s not forget his UAE Team Emirates squad. If the team might have brought its “B-team” to the Giro, the Tour lineup looks to be cycling’s version of Murderer’s Row from the New York Yankees.

Last year’s third-place man Adam Yates is back, along with Juan Ayuso, Joǎo Almeida, Pavel Sivakov, and Tim Wellens.

With a strong team and an even stronger Pogačar, against the backdrop of hobbled key rivals, the road to Nice is looking clear.

5. Pogačar is a generational star

vegas tour de france

Perhaps more than anything, fate and momentum seem to be on Pogačar’s side.

He is that rare racer who transcends the rest of the peloton and who is capable of pulling off the impossible.

Comparisons to Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault do not miss the mark. What Pogačar is accomplishing will elevate him to among the sport’s very best.

⭕️Youngest riders when completing trilogy of GC podiums in GTs (//): 25-205: Hinault 25-225: Gimondi 25-247: Pogačar 25-289: Contador 26-219: Quintana 26-276: Fignon 27-250: Nibali 27-295: Fuente 27-301: Van Springel 27-330: Merckx @VeloStatistics — Cycling Statistics (@StatsOnCycling) May 26, 2024

That’s not to say that Pogačar’s generation is weak. Quite the opposite. Today’s grand tour depth and quality is the best and varied as it’s been in decades. And it’s shame that the likes of Vingegaard, Roglič, and Evenepoel suffered that horrible crash. In a way, that incident is stealing away perhaps what could have been one of the greatest Tours in modern cycling history.

This Tour still should be one to remember.

Though the Giro was almost a foregone conclusion from the start, Pogačar’s racing style and grace still made this Giro wildly entertaining.

Witnessing Pogačar in his prime taking one of cycling’s most elusive and prestigious milestones will make this Tour one to remember.

Tennis Briefing: French Open highlights and grass-court season preview

Welcome back to the Monday Tennis Briefing, where The Athletic  will explain the stories from the past week on-court.

This week, the French Open in Paris drew to a close, with the second Grand Slam of the season playing out at Roland Garros. Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz   won the singles titles, in a fortnight of five-setters, Hawk-Eye drama, raucous crowds and much, much more.

For a special edition of the Tennis Briefing, the writers at  The Athletic look back on the tournament, and ahead to the coming of grass-court season.

How many kinds of five-set thriller are there?

The 2024 French Open was a tournament for the five-set advocates and the sceptics.

There was high drama in Carlos Alcaraz’s semi-final win over Jannik Sinner and his Sunday defeat of Alexander Zverev in the final , both of which went to five sets, and both of which were electric, jittery, at times uncomfortable matches, as that drama appeared to take over. Novak Djokovic’s gruelling, and ultimately hugely damaging, win over Francisco Cerundolo in the fourth round was less than sparkling on the quality index; ditto Zverev edging past Tallon Griekspoor in the third round.

The crucial and final moments were made even more dramatic by the spells when those matches were simmering, and the five-set format retains a uniqueness of tension and endurance that a three-set match arguably can’t. Sceptics would say that some of those matches were long on time and low on quality. Both things are true; it’s possible for there to be bad, indifferent and brilliant five-set matches.

vegas tour de france

We saw all of the above at this French Open, including genuine thrillers like the late-night barnstormer on court 14 when Holger Rune edged past Flavio Cobolli in a final-set tiebreak, Djokovic and Lorenzo Musetti ’s latest-ever finish at Roland Garros, and Dusan Lajovic and Roman Safiullin’s epic in the early rounds.

What's the one thing you would change about tennis?

Is Coco Gauff a multiple Grand Slam doubles champion in waiting?

It wasn’t the title Coco Gauff came to Paris for, but it was one she really wanted.

Gauff didn’t even think she was going to be playing doubles here, because her usual partner at Grand Slams, Jessica Pegula, is still recovering from an injury. Then another American, Taylor Townsend got injured. That left Katerina Siniakova — who, along with Gauff, is one of the world’s top doubles players — without a partner.

Townsend gave Gauff’s phone number to Siniakova. There was a text, and two days before the tournament began, the French Open had a very formidable new doubles team: an elite singles player and an elite doubles one, with plenty of experience in the biggest events: Siniakova was a seven-time Grand Slam doubles champion even before this tournament, Gauff a two-time Grand Slam doubles semi-finalist.

The results were both surprising and predictable. Gauff and Siniakova basically winged their way to the title, like two great jazz musicians playing a series of gigs together after little to no practice, ending with a 7-6(5), 6-3 win over Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani in the final .

vegas tour de france

It wasn’t flawless.

Siniakova pegged Gauff in the back of the head in one match. Sometimes they didn’t know which direction the other one was heading in. Giggling apologies between points were not infrequent. Talent is talent though, and Gauff’s 125mph serves also helped plenty.

When it was over, Gauff said there was a larger lesson to cull from the experience. “I think it’s just one of those things that when you least expect it to happen, it happens,” she said.

“Same thing (with the) U.S. Open, when I won it (last September). I didn’t expect to win. I was having a really bad year. Then here, I didn’t even expect to play (doubles).”

Can the wisdom of crowds prevail?

It already feels like it was about 10 years ago, but the first week of this French Open was dominated by stories of bad crowd behaviour. Raucous fans were making life hard for some of the players, and David Goffin reported he had been spat at by a supporter when the atmosphere was particularly feverish during his first-round win over home favourite Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo announced a site-wide ban on drinking in the stands a couple of days later, in what straight away felt like a heavy-handed response.

In her tournament review on Sunday, Maursemo accepted organisers may have jumped the gun, while also rejecting the idea that the ban contributed to the numerous empty seats seen on the main courts at Roland Garros.

vegas tour de france

“Honestly, in my opinion, the alcohol, maybe it wasn’t necessary, and I don’t think it was the reason why the stadium at some point was empty,” she said.

The lesson here is that tennis needs to take a step back and not try to stamp out all behaviour it finds a little too much. Something like the Goffin incident clearly oversteps the mark, but having passionate, engaged fans is hardly a bad thing.

There are plenty of tennis players who would love to have this kind of raucousness more often, with many tour events grappling with empty seats and a lack of atmosphere that is, in a wider sense, a far bigger problem for the sport.

The wisdom of crowds: Tricolores, trumpets, and truculence at Roland Garros

What will it take for the French Open to accept Hawk-Eye?

Apparently, the people who run the French Open needed yet another reminder:

High-speed cameras and the computer technology that allows them to make line calls with the tiniest margin for error are better than the human eye — and better for humans.

Little has moved the needle so far, but costing a finalist a Grand Slam title may make the FFT (France’s tennis federation, which organizes the French Open) reconsider staying loyal to umpires coming down from their chair to inspect ball marks on the red clay to estimate whether the edge of a tiny ball nicked or missed a painted line, with millions of dollars riding on the decision.

Last year, Wimbledon’s obstinance may very well have cost home favourite Andy Murray a chance to win his match against Stefanos Tsitsipas. But that was in the second round.

On Sunday, in the fifth set of the men’s final , a similarly mistaken line call prevented Alexander Zverev from breaking Carlos Alcaraz’s serve and knotting the set at two games each. Everyone watching on television or with access to social media knew very quickly that Alcaraz double-faulted and that chair umpire Renaud Lichtenstein should not have overruled the original line judge’s call.

vegas tour de france

Once again, the wider world had access to the correct information, but the people who really needed it, and should have been protected by it, did not.

“There’s a difference whether you’re down 3-1 in the fifth set or you’re back to two-all — that’s a deciding difference,” said Zverev, after he had learned that the final call had been wrong. “It’s frustrating in the end, but it is what it is. Umpires make mistakes. They’re also human, and that’s OK. But of course, in a situation like that, you wish there wouldn’t be mistakes.”

Pascal Maria, the assistant referee for the French Open, said earlier in the tournament that officials are not considering moving to fully electronic line calling, which will be ubiquitous on the ATP Tour next year.

Officials used to argue that the Hawk-Eye system was not as effective on clay because of the raised lines. Supporters of the technology say that is no longer an issue, and regardless, the computer was always better than a human anyway for this task.

The ruling against Zverev fell within the error tolerance of 3mm (just under an eighth of an inch), so it may never have been called out by an electronic system — but there would have been no person being asked to track a minuscule distance at high speed under severe pressure. Tennis needs to save its officials, and itself, from the vitriol that comes with mistakes.

Welcome to 'Ump-Head': The tiny camera thrilling fans and embarrassing players in Paris

Can Iga Swiatek emulate Rafael Nadal in yet another way?

Iga Swiatek has long idolised Rafael Nadal — and similarities between the two have become increasingly hard to ignore.

So here’s another one: it was after Nadal’s fourth Roland Garros title that he won his first Wimbledon, in 2008. So could this be the year, after Swiatek’s fourth French Open, that she too breaks her duck in south-west London?

When The Athletic  put this to Swiatek on Saturday, she responded with typical modesty.

“I think the biggest progress I can make on grass right now is using my serve that is better, but also I don’t expect a lot at Wimbledon next month),” she said.

vegas tour de france

“The balls are different. Overall, tennis is different on grass. I’ll just see and I’ll work hard to play better there.”

Swiatek also explained that she has been happy with her progress on grass, saying that she feels “like, every year, it’s easier for me to adapt to grass”.

Whether Swiatek can complete the fiendishly difficult French Open-Wimbledon double this time — as with every year she wins at Roland Garros — will be one of the key sub-plots as the surfaces switch for the early summer.

'I get better every match': How Iga Swiatek learned to be inevitable

Will the grass provide a soft landing for stars on the comeback trail?

It’s impossible to have witnessed this French Open and not feel very encouraged about the prospects for a few stars on the comeback trail from injury or, in Naomi Osaka’s case, maternity leave.

Canadians Denis Shapovalov and Bianca Andreescu both made the third round at Roland Garros on a surface neither of them particularly enjoys. Shapovalov has been working through an injured knee. Andreescu has spent eight months recovering from a stress fracture in her back.

Both are now moving on towards Wimbledon.

Shapovalov could not be more thrilled. Grass is his favorite surface, and if he can beat quality opponents on the clay, he’s someone that players and fans alike will want to circle on their draw sheets.

vegas tour de france

The same goes for Andreescu, the 2019 U.S. Open champion. She showed every bit of her competitive fire and nearly unmatched creativity in Paris, and though she’s hardly a grass court specialist, her athletic talent and experience on the surface should make her a very good watch at the All England Club.

And then there’s Osaka, the furthest thing from a clay lover, pushing Iga Swiatek, the reigning and ultimate champion, to within a point of elimination in the second round. Osaka has never been much for grass either, but if that is what she is capable of on a surface she doesn’t like, there’s no reason she can’t perform even better at Wimbledon, where the grass will give her all sorts of love that the clay does not.

taylor swift the eras tour las vegas, nv

Taylor Swift is back on tour and making her way through Europe after the first very successful leg of her North American tour and visits to South America, Japan, Singapore, and Australia. Since the Eras Tour started, Swift has released a whole new album with The Tortured Poets Department . The brand new material seems to have inspired the wardrobe department, because Swift has debuted a number of different looks from the first era of the Eras Tour during her concerts in France, Portugal, and Madrid.

The singer has kept to her classic style, favoring sparkling materials, bright colors, and flowing skirts, while using designers like Versace, Roberto Cavalli, and Oscar De La Renta for her coutore looks. She’s also shown off new versions of her older outfits, changing up the colors so she can have some variety on the road. And there are some special ensembles just for TTPD . Scroll through for style inspo for enjoying another Swiftie summer.

Taylor Swift: Which Eras Tour Songs Didn’t Make Concert Film & Which Surprise Songs Got In

Every show on the Eras Tour involves an acoustic set where Swift performs at least two songs custom to that night’s show. At first, she wouldn’t allow herself repeats unless she messed up the lyrics to a song, but now, she has done away with that rule and gotten more creative by combining songs in mashups and playing up to four in a segment. The first song or three take place on guitar, and then she shifts to piano for the second half before diving beneath the stage to resume the setlist – which has since contracted and expanded to include a  Tortured Poets Department  era and set .

Below you’ll find Taylor Swift’s surprise songs that she has played most recently in Europe as well as a record of all those she has played on the entire tour so far.
