The USS Artemis was an Akira class Federation starship operated by Starfleet in the late 24 th century.

Mickayla MacGregor served aboard the Artemis from 2373 until early 2381. During this time she earned two promotions from petty officer third class to petty officer first class. She received a demerit on her record in early 2381 when she discovered that her boyfriend of two years was already engaged to her roommate and entered an altercation with the two of them that put all of three of them in the infirmary. Charges were not filed and she accepted a transfer to the USS Endeavour .

Elro Kobol , M.D. served aboard the Artemis from the time of his graduation from Starfleet Academy in 2375 until his transfer to the USS Endeavour in 2380. Due to the heavy cruiser’s role as a border patrol vessel, the Artemis saw its share of action with pirates, alien anomalies, and other situations. During this time Doctor Tyre served in the Medical Department and earned a promotion from ensign to lieutenant (junior grade) in 2378. He received a second promotion days before leaving the Artemis to serve as the USS Endeavour ’s chief medical officer two years later.

USS Artemis (NCC-1992)

The USS Artemis (NCC-1992) was a Artemis -class starship in service in both the 23rd and 24th centuries . Starfleet launched the Artemis in 2274 , and she was used as a testbed for various technologies up until her destruction by a then-unknown assailant in 2364 .

Artemis 's destruction [ ]

Returning from a conference, Daniel Radke and Ensign Cathal O'Toole reported strange goings-on, including general feelings of an alien conspiracy (which later was revealed to be by a mysterious race of parasitic beings ). On this knowledge, Captain James Ashenfelder ordered the Artemis back to Federation space to warn other non-influenced Starfleet officers.

En route , someone or something sabotaged the Artemis 's starboard warp coils , stopping the ship. As the crew facilitated repairs, the ship was attacked by a then-unknown assailant, killing nearly 80% of the crew. The survivors abandoned ship as a warp core breach could not be contained.

In the escape pods , several survivors reported seeing the Artemis explode out of the small portholes.

The Artemis survivors were rescued nearly three weeks later by the USS Saratoga (NCC-31911) . Oddly, the debris left did not match the total mass of the Artemis . ( Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles : " False Security ")

"Lady Lazarus" [ ]

Years later, en route to another destination, the USS Prospect (NCC-60056) received a weak distress call . Captain John Greene changed course to intercept the vessel.

Upon arrival, the Prospect crew discovered the remnants of the Artemis . An away team , consisting of Commander Anne Lansing , chief of security George Stratos , counselor Daniel Radke and three security officers beamed over to the wreckage (after environmental controls were brought back on-line) to search for bodies. They split up into three groups: Stratos and his escort on the bridge ; Lansing and her escort in engineering ; and Radke and Ensign Garrett in the front section of the primary hull (which was blown out into a wide, three-deck or higher area contained by a force field ).

Lansing and her escort discovered the warp core was not overloading at the time the survivors abandoned ship, but something or someone deliberately sounded the warning when no real threat existed. They bring the warp core back on-line.

All reported finding no bodies aboard the ship, even though so many of their colleagues had died that day.

Radke and Garrett encountered the aliens who attacked the Artemis in 2364: the M'Tar . The M'Tar attacked Radke and Garrett, altering them into the Liaison and Link respectively.

The other teams converged on the area to find the Liaison and Link bound to the Artemis 's frame by some sort of biological vine (tied into the Link's back, which, in turn, was wrapped around the Liaison's body). The M'Tar revealed they originally wanted to use the Artemis to infiltrate the Federation while the conspiracy aliens attempted to take control of Starfleet . Unfortunately, they were left to drift for years (as their plan failed), but their new plan involved taking control of the Prospect and returning to enslave the Federation.

Unbeknownst to the M'Tar, their control on Radke weakened when they left his body to feed on corpses (the latest being one of the Prospect security officers). Undercover Na'arbi agent Hahn Jun-Seok , revealing some of his true identity to Greene on the Prospect , transported over to the Artemis , exploiting this weakness. After setting the warp core to critical, Hahn enabled the Prospect to beam over Lansing and her away team, sans the transformed Radke and Garrett.

The Prospect pulled away as flashing emanated from the hull breach in the Artemis 's primary hull. At the last moment, Hahn broke Radke and Garrett away from the M'Tar vine and transported them back to the Prospect before the Artemis exploded, sucking the debris, Hahn and the two M'Tar through the portal the M'Tar created into the M'Tar Domain . The portal collapsed with the explosion. ( Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles : " Lady Lazarus ")

'It's heart-forward:' Q&A with 'Star Trek: Prodigy' creators about Season 2 (exclusive)

A chat with Kevin and Dan Hageman on this brilliant series' second chance.

Five alien teenagers stand together wearing spacesuits

Fortified with an optimistic spirit and settling into its new home on the Netflix streaming platform, "Star Trek: Prodigy" is boldly shifting into second gear for its 20-episode sophomore season.

This season finds our crew of intergalactic alien teenagers under the protective wing of Vice Admiral Janeway as they embark on a daring series of adventures in the final frontier aboard the Voyager-A starship.

Here's the official Season 2 synopsis:

"In Season 2, these six young outcasts who make up the ' Prodigy ' crew are assigned a new mission aboard the USS Voyager-A to rescue Captain Chakotay (voiced by Robert Beltran) and bring peace to Gwyn's (voiced by Ella Purnell) home world. However, when their plan goes astray, it creates a time paradox that jeopardizes both their future and past."

Emmy Award-winning creators and showrunners Kevin and Dan and Hageman ("Trollhunters," "Ninjago") couldn’t be more pleased that their beloved " Star Trek " brainchild has a new online landing pad. The colorful second season of this underrated all-ages show appears to have an abundance of the engaging, character-driven, story-first momentum that made it such a satisfying sci-fi series when it first debuted on Paramount+ and Nickelodeon three years ago.

"Kevin and I, our first entry into 'Star Trek' was ' The Wrath of Khan ' and that special Kirk and Spock relationship," Dan Hageman told Space.com . "Being children of the '80s, we’re very Amblin with earnest storytelling, so all of that is into Prodigy.

"In Season 2 with time travel , we always got the note, 'Is a younger viewer going to understand this?' We just need to spark something in their brain to want to dig into it more. We had a writer in the room who talked about a 'Star Trek' episode where they found Data's head buried in the sand, and it made his wheels start spinning of how that was possible. All 'Trek' fans will know that they were that kid too, where you take apart devices to see how they work. You want to know these things."

For the Hageman brothers, emotionality is everything; it surrounds and binds the entire animation project.

"It's heart-forward," Kevin Hageman adds. "When we think of the movies that stick to our bone as a kids, it's like ' E.T. ' He was dead lying on a table for a bit and I was crying. That's what makes a great story versus just some fun, funny comedy I saw as a kid. For us, whether it was 'Trollhunters' or even 'Ninjago,' it sticks with them.  We've talked to 18-year-olds, and they said that show meant something to them because we went there, and that’s what we wanted to do with 'Prodigy.'"

Everything You Need to Know on Star Trek: Prodigy | StarTrek.com - YouTube

Exploring new territory was foremost on the creators' minds launching into this resurrected Prodigy outing, and the award-winning filmmakers were full of "Star Trek" universe ideas.

"We didn't want to have the same ending as Season 1, so it's got completely different feelings," said Dan Hageman. "These are now kids in the adult world. And also it's not just kids learning from the adults, but the adults learning from the kids. So, if anything, Season 1 is an entry point, and now we’re getting into real 'Trek.'"

One of the biggest challenges for the showrunners was to avoid being like " Star Trek: Lower Decks ," in which all the main characters are treated like underlings.

"How to do you do that, treat it for real, but still allow for some wish fulfillment and spirit of adventure?" Kevin Hageman said. "And you'll see that as you watch more of the new season. How do you balance that in a military system?"

"Prodigy's" return vocal cast includes Kate Mulgrew (Kathryn Janeway), Brett Gray (Dal), Ella Purnell (Gwyn), Rylee Alazraqui (Rok-Tahk), Angus Imrie (Zero), Jason Mantzoukas (Jankom Pog), Dee Bradley Baker (Murf), and John Noble (The Diviner).

Season 2's added co-stars feature Robert Picardo (The Doctor), Jason Alexander (Doctor Noum), Daveed Diggs (Commander Tysess), Jameela Jamil (Ensign Asencia), Ronny Cox (Admiral Jellico) and Michaela Dietz (Maj’el).

Mulgrew and Picardo have expansive vocal duties in this Netflix season, and the Hagemens were fortunate to welcome such talented "Star Trek" luminaries aboard.

"We felt like after the death of Hologram Janeway at the end of Season 1, we were tickled with this idea that they needed a new mentor," Dan Hageman explained. "Admiral Janeway isn’t as soft and lovey and Hologram Janeway, and we thought it was hilarious that the Doctor would want to be endeared to the kids as much as they were to Hologram Janeway. She was Mary Poppins in Season 1, and he's like Mr. Belvedere in Season 2, trying to keep them out of shenanigans. We weren't trying to make a ' Voyager ' spinoff, but naturally if you have Kate Mulgrew and Janeway at the center of it, these characters are going to gravitate toward her."

Buoyed by fan appreciation, the Hagemans have high hopes for "Prodigy's" future.

"I'm always inspired by our crew and cast," Kevin Hageman said. "From out of the writers room and the ideas and scripts that were coming out, I was loving this show. And to see the animation and hear the music and the vocal records. Everyone loved this show and poured their hearts into it. I hope that we'll get future seasons or animated film installments to keep this going."

All 20 episodes of "Star Trek: Prodigy" Season 2 are now streaming on Netflix.

Memory Alpha

The SS Artemis was a 23rd century Federation colony ship .

Artemis was launched from Mars in 2274 , on stardate 7678.43, on a colonization mission to planet Septimis Minor . The mission commander was Philip Peter Bryce , with Galen Pizzorno serving as Deputy Mission Director . It had a crew of fifteen, plus passengers. Contact with the ship was lost on stardate 7780.85. Numerous searches by Starfleet failed to locate the transport or any trace of its crew and passengers. ( TNG : " The Ensigns of Command " okudagram )

After contact was lost, the ship's guidance system failed and took the craft off course . They instead headed for the planet Tau Cygna V and established a colony. ( TNG : " The Ensigns of Command " okudagram )

A closer look at the file

The fate of the Artemis was not stated in the episode, but as Tau Cygna V was the only suitable planet in range for landing, it was most likely eventually dismantled for materials.

Some of the information on the SS Artemis came from the okudagram Riker was reading in the episode. Though illegible on screen, a legible version was reprinted in The 24th Century Technical Manual , Vol. 2 (p. 41). Interestingly, only the first text block and the captions had relevance to the SS Artemis . The two lower paragraphs appeared to have been recycled texts concerning the Charybdis , intended for use on an otherwise unused okudagram in the earlier episode " The Royale ", published in Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Continuing Mission (p.81). [1]

According to the episode's script , the Artimis was launched 142 years prior instead of 92 years.

Get a Closer Look at the Star Trek Enterprise Model

The starship model used in filming underwent an extensive conservation

Starship Enterprise

On  Star Trek,  a TV series that aired in the late 1960s, more than 400 crew members explored the galaxy aboard the USS  Enterprise,  which had a length of 947 feet and weighed 190,000 tons. In actuality, the starship was an 11-foot-long model made of poplar wood and vacu-formed plastic.

None

Film of the model appeared in all 79 episode of the original series (broadcast from 1966–69), and the model was donated to the National Air and Space Museum by Paramount Studios in 1974.  Forty years later, the Museum undertook a two-year project to restore the  Enterprise  to how it looked during the filming of the 1967 episode "The Trouble with Tribbles"—the last known modification of the ship during the show's production. Today the Enterprise is displayed in the Museum's location in DC.

Let's take a closer look at the model.

None

During filming, the model balanced on a single-point stand attached to a geared head made to hold heavy cameras—insufficient support for such a large model. Today, the model rests upon two stanchions built by Museum staff.

Lower Decks – Savel, USS Artemis-A

uss artemis star trek

We’re here with another interview with a newer member of our community. The title of this column is “Lower Decks,” hearkening back to the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode titled “Lower Decks,” in which junior officers aboard the Enterprise-D speculate on the reasons for recent unusual actions taken by the command crew near the Cardassian border.

This month’s interview is with the writer behind Ensign Savel playing a male Vulcan Security Officer assigned to the USS Artemis-A.

DeVeau: Tell us a little about the writer behind the character — where in the world do you hail from?  Anything you’d like to share!

Savel: I currently live in South Carolina, specifically in a suburb just outside of the capital. I work in Emergency Management which can be a very interesting field that presents a lot of unique challenges.

What was your introduction to Science Fiction in general and Star Trek specifically?

My first introduction to sci-fi was probably Star Wars when I was a kid, watching the VHS tapes of the original trilogy at my grandparents’ house. I don’t think I was introduced to Star Trek until much later when it would just happen to come on TV because I didn’t know anyone else that watched it. I remember getting to watch TNG a lot while I was getting ready for school when it’d come on BBC America but I didn’t get to sit and watch the whole series in order. Most of my Star Trek experience was from playing different video games, mostly STO and Bridge Commander. I’ve also spent quite a lot of time watching and re-watching Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis. Pretty much, if it’s got “star” somewhere in the name I’m probably going to be interested in it.

It wasn’t until I got into SB118 that I actually started to sit down and watch the Star Trek series in full. I started with TNG and the subsequent movies, mostly because Picard was my favorite Captain at that point with my limited exposure, and just finished it sometime last year. Now I’ve moved onto DS9 and I’m about halfway through that. In between I’ve also watched the first two seasons of SNW which have been really fun to watch. I hope to eventually get through at least one watchthrough of all the series at some point.

What is your experience with roleplaying?

I’ve been doing roleplay online for a little under 15 years now. Most of that has been done in different games, usually MMOs, but I’ve also had a little bit of experience doing forum RP as well. The format for all of that has been prose, so there was a bit of adjustment to the style done here in SB118. I’d never written anything in the style of script before, even just something for myself, so it took me a few to get used to that. SB118 is also the first time I’ve done any PBEM ever. I was admittedly a little hesitant since it was very different from what I’d done in the past but I’m glad I didn’t let that keep me away.

What brought you to SB118?

Every once in a while I’ll jump back into STO and play a little bit. During one of those times, I got the itch to try roleplaying there so I started to search the web for any fleets that were focused on doing RP. At some point during my search I came across the SB118 website and was immediately drawn in. After reading the website and glancing over the wiki, I immediately started to fill out an application and that is easily one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’m super glad I stumbled across this community because I’ve met some absolutely amazing writers that are even greater people.

Why did you choose this specific character and duty post?

I’ll start with the duty post, because that one was pretty much a case of writing what you know. Since I wasn’t super familiar with Star Trek I figured I’d choose something close to what I do in real life. Having a career in Emergency Management means I’m familiar with how law enforcement and emergency response operate so security seemed like a good fit. I also figured that no matter what was going on, security would likely be somewhere nearby, which meant my character would also get a chance to be involved.

Choosing a Vulcan was actually a little more boring. I didn’t want to write a human, because I thought an alien would be more fun for me personally, and Vulcans were one of the aliens that I knew the most about with my limited knowledge of Star Trek overall. I unfortunately can’t say I took inspiration from a Tuvok archetype because I still haven’t gotten to Voyager yet.

Where do you see your character five years from now?

Ideally he’ll be moving along the command track, possibly even in a red shirt someday, but I’m not eager to see him move up just for the sake of collecting pips. So, as long as he’s at least further along in his career than he is now I’ll be happy.

The biggest thing I want is to have him continue to grow as a person. It’s been fun exploring his inexperience navigating different social situations, for example. It was something I started with the help of another writer in the fleet and have since roped in a few other people on the ship to slowly start growing that part of him. If I can keep that going and help him become a more well-rounded and interesting character, then I’ll feel like I’ve accomplished my goals with him.

Thanks for your time, Ensign Savel!

Conversations filled the room with anticipation for the day ahead.

NASA’s Stennis Space Center hosted Take Our Children to Work Day on June 27 with a day set aside for children of employees to see up close the work carried out at NASA Stennis by its diverse workforce.

A video featuring NASA Stennis Associate Director Rodney McKellip welcomed the enthusiastic crowd. He shared about the different hats worn by the more than 5,000 employees throughout the NASA Stennis federal city.

There are engineers who help make the south Mississippi NASA center the premier rocket engine test facility in the country. NASA Stennis, the place that tested rocket stages to put the first humans on the Moon, remains on the frontlines of preparing NASA and the United States for its return to the Moon through the Artemis campaign to explore more of the lunar surface than ever before.

Those attending Take Our Children to Work Day learned how NASA Stennis has many rocket scientists and test engineers carrying out this work, but that is not all.

Gator, a fictional character, is drawn as a photographer capturing a cyro demo.

A team of folks, including accountants, lawyers, environmental specialists, educators, and public affairs specialists, wear the NASA hat to ensure mission success too.

There also are teams climbing on test stands, installing rocket engines into the stands, working with piping, electrical, welding, construction projects, safety inspections, and more.

In addition to being the premier propulsion test site supporting NASA’s mission, NASA Stennis is where commercial companies experience success and benefit from the expertise of NASA personnel. Companies like Relativity Space, Rocket Lab, and Evolution Space have established ongoing operations at NASA Stennis as the commercialization of space continues.

The NASA Stennis federal city also includes a range agencies, universities, and companies sharing costs and carrying out individual missions.

It is the command site for the largest collection of oceanographers in the world and where Navy Seals train.

Participants learned about such operations from a panel of employees from NASA, Aerojet Rocketdyne, an L3 Harris Technologies company, Lockheed Martin, and Relativity Space.

They toured NASA Stennis and participated in activities facilitated by NASA, Aerojet Rocketdyne, and the National Data Buoy Center.

The NASA Stennis associate director left them with a final thought before their day started: If you hear something loud during the day, just know that is the sound of progress at the nation’s premier rocket propulsion test facility and federal city known as NASA Stennis.

Sure enough, that afternoon, the unmistakable sound of engine testing could be heard across the site. For this ol‘ Gator, it sounds like music to the ears.

NASA’s Stennis Space Center and partner Sidus Space Inc. announced primary mission success July 2 for the center’s historic in-space mission – an autonomous systems payload aboard an orbiting satellite.

Science fiction fans at the Mississippi Comic Convention were provided an out-of-this world experience, while learning about NASA, during the two-day event in Jackson, Mississippi, thanks to employees from NASA’s Stennis Space Center.

“I’ve never been to an outreach activity that you reached so many people and from such a wide spectrum of people, from grade schoolers to retired grandparents,” said Troy Frisbie, NASA Stennis legislative affairs officer and chief of staff. “We interacted with a wide audience and really shared how NASA and NASA Stennis benefit all. It was a really, really good experience.”

The NASA booth, at an event that attracted 18,000 people to the Mississippi Trade Mart and Coliseum on June 22-23, featured an immersive experience with virtual reality goggles. Participants were able to view an engine test conducted at NASA Stennis, take a virtual spacewalk while visiting the International Space Station, and experience a simulated rocket launch to Mars.

One group enjoying the interaction with NASA was the Star Trek fan club from Jackson, Mississippi.

“They were real big supporters of NASA,” Frisbie said. “They loved the virtual reality experience and encouraged others at the convention to come by and visit with us.”

NASA Stennis budget analyst Rebecca Mataya and engineers Paul Fuller, Steven Helmstetter, and Chris Barnett-Woods volunteered with Frisbie. The center employees talked to college students majoring in engineering, graphic design, architecture, education, and healthcare.

“The assumption is everybody has to be an engineer to work at NASA, and that is not the case,” Frisbie said. “There are all kinds of opportunities, and that was an eye opener for many.”

Conversations centered on job opportunities and careers with NASA, as well as work conducted at NASA Stennis. The volunteers also fielded general questions about NASA’s powerful SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and the agency’s Artemis campaign of returning astronauts to the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and inspiration for a new generation of explorers: the Artemis Generation.

“We enjoyed telling the NASA story and how NASA Stennis on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi serves as an economic engine that contributes to this nation’s space dreams,” Frisbie added.

USS Artemis-A

Introduction

The USS Artemis (NCC-81287) is a Luna class starship under the command of Captain Addison MacKenzie .

The Artemis -A was originally launched in 2392 as the USS Doyle (NCC-80221-A) and named after Scottish physician and writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) and one of New Scotland 's moons. The Doyle -A was commanded by Captain Shelther Faranster and then Captain Selene Faranfey until mid-2393, when Faranfey and most of her crew transferred to the USS Athena . In her first two years of service, the Doyle -A explored the Avalon Sector and the Briar Patch as a support vessel for Deep Space 285 . The Doyle -A was eventually deactivated and spent the rest of the 2390s as part of the reserve fleet.

In 2400, after undergoing a minor refit, the ship was relaunched and recommissioned as the USS Artemis and given a new registry number, NCC-81287, and sent to the Borderlands .
