‘never saw him again:’ houston-area contractor wanted in four counties is accused of swindling homeowners, 51-year-old eusebio maldonado is accused of theft in two states.

PASADENA, Texas – A Houston-area contractor is accused of ripping off home repair customers in four different counties, some of whom were victims of natural disasters, court records reveal.

Eusebio Maldonado, 51, has open warrants in Texas and Louisiana, according to charging documents.

Maldonado’s alleged scheme dates back to 2019 and continued at least until late last year.

“I needed my roof replaced because of the tornadoes and the hail damage that was done,” said Maria Iris Yanez, a single mother who lives in Pasadena.

After last year’s tornado, she hired Maldonado for repairs. He had been soliciting her parents for work at their home, she said, and when she needed it, her dad referred her to Maldonado.

According to court records, she paid him $3,500 for permits, materials, and work that still hasn’t been done. The total project was expected to cost around $8,500, she said.

“It’s really sickening that he can actually take advantage of people this way,” Yanez said.

Maldonado gave her many excuses about why the work wasn’t getting done, she said.

“He kept on saying that it was raining and that he couldn’t find any guys to to work, and then something about someone passed away in his family, then he said he was in Mexico,” she said.

In 2019, Maldonado is accused of stealing $5,000 from a Galveston County victim, records show. Then in 2020, he allegedly targeted hurricane victims in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. And in 2021, he allegedly pocketed $13,000 from a Chambers County couple.

“The only time we saw him here was whenever he picked up the money. We never saw him again,” said Melissa Salas, who hired Maldonado for a patio project at her Chambers County home.

Maldonado came recommended by her husband’s friend, she said. They had seen pictures of his past work, too, but after getting cash up front, he stopped showing up.

“He never delivered,” she said. “We trusted that man with our money, with our savings, and he just walked out like nothing,” Salas said.

He also gave them many excuses and never had the materials delivered for the project that would have ended up costing $23,000, she said. Their trust was shattered and they eventually hired someone else to do the job.

“He deserves to get some kind of punishment,” she said. “It’s not fair that people trust him and he just steals their money and walks away ."

Pasadena Police told KPRC 2 Maldonado is probably still operating in the Houston area and there might be additional victims. Police are asking for any tips of information that may help in the case.

Yanez still hasn’t been able to make the much-needed repairs at her home.

"Next time, I will really do my research,” Yanez said. “I don’t know how he can sleep.”

BBB tips to protect yourself

According to the Better Business Bureau, it should be a red flag when any contractor asks for more than a third of the total project cost up front to buy materials.

“A legitimate contractor will have funds to purchase the material needed until the job is done, then you go ahead and pay the rest,” said Carolina Petriciolet with the Better Business Bureau.

• Don’t rush into hiring someone
• Do get a contract and quote that lays out labor and material cost
• Get references
• Make sure you have an accurate phone number and address for the contractor
• Be cautious of paying with an app like Zelle or Venmo, because it may be difficult to track them down later if they stop showing up
• Be cautious of someone going door-to-door to solicit business

Petriciolet said any legitimate contractor will accept payment in various forms, like credit card, debit card, or check.

If you do get scammed by a contractor, you’re encouraged to file a complaint with the BBB and contact local law enforcement. If you pay with a credit card, Petriciolet said you can also contact your bank to try to stop the payment.

Live from Paris: Taylor Swift adds 'Tortured Poets' songs to Eras Tour in France

PARIS, France — The Chairman jump-started her tour after a two-month hiatus, and anticipation was high over whether Taylor Swift would incorporate her 11th era album into the Eras Tour set at La Défense Arena on Thursday.

She did and then some.

Swift extended the set list by one track to land at 46 songs. But many changes were made along the way. She added a new era for "The Tortured Poets Department," cut a handful of songs and rearranged most of the eras including combining the sets for "Folklore" and "Evermore."

She also debuted a number of new outfits along the way.

Delivering all the updates were Bryan West, the USA TODAY Network's full-time Taylor Swift reporter, from inside La Défense Arena in Paris, with Swiftie and trending reporter Anthony Robledo assisting from his desk.

'Midnights' set follows secret songs

Swift stuck to her original set list for the "Midnights" era by singing "Lavender Haze," "Anti-Hero" and "Midnight Rain." She ended the night with a triumphant rendition of "Karma" as usual.

'loml' is second secret song

Fans got one more taste of "The Tortured Poets Department" when Swift played the heartbreaking song "loml" on the piano during her secret set.

'Paris' is a secret song, of course

Swift started her secret set with "Paris," a bonus song from her "Midnights" album.

New 'Tortured Poets' set is here

Toward the end of her show, Swift officially launched the long-awaited “The Tortured Poets Department” section of the tour after the 1989 era.

Swift performed the track “But Daddy I Love Him” off the April 19 album for her ecstatic fans while wearing a new beige dress with cursive letters.  

A road spiraled down the catwalk in an animation to initiate the era. The background animation showed a deserted road while large cages animated and fell on the road.

“Oh my god you should see your faces,” she sang.

She quickly segued into a brief moment of “So High School,” the beloved track speculated to be about her romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. She quickly performed the powerhouse anthem “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me.”

Swift switched to “Down Bad” before seamlessly transitioning into the lead single “Fortnight.” Stage production recreated an asylum that resembled the music video for the song with Post Malone, recorded harmony played concluding the song. 

Dancers entered the stage in a marching band style format playing drums as she performed the wrath-fueled song “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.” Jan Ravnik and Kameron Saunders then revived Swift in a jazzy skit to set up “I Can Do With A Broken Heart,” where she debuted another new outfit. 

“The End” text displayed wrapping up the era that’s likely here to stay. Other beloved tracks like “Guilty As Sin” and “Florida!” did not make the cut.

New '1989' outfit

Swift never goes out of Style. During her “1989” set, she debuted a new, sequined outfit of blue and pink. Her sparkly shoes matched with a different colored heel on each. For the bridge of “Blank Space,” the crowd started chanting in Sydney, Australia, “Syd-ney” as a nod to the 1989 World Tour concert movie where Swift would chant the name of the city she was in after hitting a pole with a club two times. Singapore followed the chant and Taylor Nation tweeted they want every city to incorporate the fan-fueled chant.In Paris, thousands chanted “Par-ee,” the French way to say the capital city.

Four songs cut from 'Folklore' and 'Evermore'

The new set list cut four tracks from the "Folklore" and "Evermore" eras:

• "'Tis the Damn Season"
• "Tolerate It"
• "The Last Great American Dynasty"

The combined set included eight songs altogether and wrapped up with "Willow."

'Folkmore' set debuts

Swift revealed she merged the 2020 pandemic albums “Folklore” and “Evermore” into one section. She told fans she wrote “Folklore” to represent spring and summer with “Evermore” representing fall and winter in what she always considered sister albums.

“On the Eras Tour we have now reunited the sisters, combined them into one chapter,” she said. “You can call it whatever you want as long as you promise to sing ‘Champagne Problems’ with me.”

'Folklore' set: 'Cardigan' makes the cut

Many fans had speculated "Cardigan" would be cut from the set list. But Swift actually moved it to the top of the "Folklore" set.

Swift kicked off her fifth set with "Ready for It?"

Another surprise: 'Speak Now' era comes fourth

Swift updated her "Speak Now" set with an intro dance featuring Raphael Thomas and eight other dancers wearing flowy purple dresses. She then sang "Enchanted."

Fan favorite track "Long Live" was cut from the set list.

Order of eras changed

After a fairly routine "Fearless" set, Swift altered her concert by including the “Red” era third instead of the expected “Evermore” set. Previously, "Red" came fifth.

With a new shirt that read “This Is Not Taylor’s Version,” the singer performed "22" and showed her audience that they needed to leave any expectations at home. 

The relocated "Red" set included the same four songs: "22," "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," "I Knew You Were Trouble" and "All Too Well (10-Minute Version)."

Beflore playing “All Too Well (10 Minute Version),” Swift talked about bringing all of her favorite memories to France.She did her 2019 “Lover” live show here but hadn’t brought a tour to the country since the Speak Now World Tour 13 years ago.“I cannot thank you enough. I’m so moved," she said.

Swift cut "The Archer" from her "Lover" set before beginning her "Fearless" set in a silver and black minidress as opposed to her classic gold one. A graphic showed her "Lover" house with a new addition in the attic for "The Tortured Poets Department." 'Je m'appelle Taylor'

In her monologue before playing the song "Lover," Swift said the night would span 18 years of music. Previously, the concert covered 16 years. Get ready for a "The Tortured Poets Department" addition some time tonight.

She confirmed the tour would still go era by era, and also spoke about how Paramore is a band she idolized since she was a teenager. She ended with some French: "Je m'appelle Taylor."

Taylor Swift takes the stage

Swift took the stage about 8 p.m. in Paris (2 p.m. ET) to relaunch her Eras Tour in Europe. She kicked it off with a countdown clock and the Lesley Gore song "You Don't Own Me" as usual. Then she began her "Lover" set with "Miss Americana."

Paramore covers Blondie, Talking Heads in Paris set list

At the Paris show Thursday, Paramore energized fans with eight tracks including their cover off the upcoming “Stop Making Sense” tribute album out May 17 featuring artists like Miley Cyrus and Lorde.

Debuting a blond mullet, lead singer Hayley Williams encouraged fans to dance without fear of judgment ahead of Swift’s performance.

“Enjoy your time with Miss Taylor, we will see you next time,” Williams said.

At about 6:45 p.m. in Paris (12:45 p.m. ET), Paramore began their set, officially restarting the second year of the historic Eras Tour. Lead singer Hayley Williams sported a new, blond mullet hairdo.

The American rock band is joining Swift on her European leg of 51 shows. Paramore also opened the show for two nights in Glendale, Arizona, in 2023. Their setlist then included nine songs:

Where to watch the Eras Tour livestreams

The Eras Tour is one of the first tours that has been followed, globally, by thousands of fans on digital platforms. Fans dedicate part of their concert experience to livestreaming as Swift performs. Livestream Queen Tess Bohne has spearheaded the "Great War" to find fans going live on social media and broadcasting a custom show to tens of thousands of fans almost every night on her account @tessdear .

On YouTube, user @TaylorSwiftHockeyBro also livestreams the 3-hour show, and on Twitch, @folkleric is a host fans follow.

There is also an app, Swift Alert , that notifies fans who only want to watch certain eras like the acoustic, surprise set. The app also sends out push alerts if there are any major announcements.

What secret songs are left?

For the past 83 shows, Swift has had an acoustic set she customizes every stop with a guitar and piano performance. In 2024, the Eras Tour star added mash-ups of her songs for each stop. Here are the songs she has yet to perform:

Welcome to the Eras Tour (France's Version). Swift is kicking off her 3-plus-hour concert from La Défense Arena in the Jardins de l’Arche district. Rory McIlroy wins Wells Fargo again; Rose Zhang takes Founders Cup to end Nelly Korda’s streak

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Rory McIlroy won the Wells Fargo Championship for a record fourth time Sunday, overcoming a two-stroke deficit to beat Xander Schauffele by five strokes.

No other player has won the event more than twice.

McIlroy closed with a 6-under 65 at Quail Hollow, playing the final 11 holes in 6 under even with a double bogey on the 18th hole. He finished at 17-under 267 after four straight rounds in the 60s and won his second straight PGA Tour event after teaming with Shane Lowry to take the Zurich Classic two weeks ago in New Orleans.

Schauffele shot 71.

McIlroy trailed by two after Schauffele made an eagle on the par-5 seventh, but the world’s second-ranked player quickly shifted into another gear.

The star from Northern Ireland pulled even after birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 and then made a 33-foot eagle putt on the 10th for his first lead of the tournament.

McIlroy’s finish was reminiscent of 2010 when he carded six straight 3s en route to a final round 62 to beat Phil Mickleson for his first career PGA Tour win. He also won the event in 2015 and 2021.

CLIFTON, N.J. (AP) — Rose Zhang won the Cognizant Founders Cup to end Nelly Korda’s record-tying LPGA Tour winning streak, rallying to beat Madelene Sagstrom by two strokes.

Zhang birdied four of the final five holes to overcome a three-shot deficit in a thrilling final-round duel with Sagstrom after the two broke away from the field Saturday.

Zhang shot a 6-under 66, birdieing Nos. 14, 15, 17 and 18 at Upper Montclair Country Club. Sagstrom bogeyed the 16th in a 69.

Korda, who struggled the final two days after playing magnificently in winning the five straight events she entered, had a second straight 73 and tied for seventh at 7 under.

After her final putt, Zhang bent over and put her hands to her mouth, before walking to hug caddie Oliver Brett. The two-time NCAA champion at Stanford who won last year at nearby Liberty National in her pro debut, finished at 24 under 264 total — the best score in the three years the event has been held here.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Doug Barron won the Regions Tradition for his third PGA Tour Champions victory and first major title, shooting a 4-under 68 to hold off Steven Alker by two strokes.

Barron finished at 17-under 271 at Greystone in the first of the season’s five senior majors. He ended a victory drought dating to the 2021 Shaw Charity Classic. Wins eluded him throughout his PGA Tour career, where he didn’t finish higher than third in 238 events.

But there wasn’t a lot of drama in this one as he outlasted some of the tour’s biggest names with a bogey-free round and a casual tap-in finish. Hall of Famers Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington ended up being the ones offering congratulatory hugs at the end. Barron called it “a dream come true to beat all these great players.”

Alker had a 63 to match the tournament record for Greystone.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — Chris Gotterup won the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic for his first PGA Tour title, closing with a 4-under 67 for a six-stroke victory at Dunes Golf & Beach Club.

The tournament was played opposite the Wells Fargo Championship. a signature event in Charlotte, North Carolina. Gotterup got a spot in the PGA Championship next week, but not in the Masters or a guaranteed spot in the remaining two $20 million signature events.

Four strokes ahead entering the round, Gotterup bogeyed the first two holes, then rebounded with a birdie-eagle-birdie burst on the next three. The 24-year-old former University of Oklahoma player won in his 27th tour start, finishing at 22-under 262.

Alistair Docherty (64) and Davis Thompson (68) tied for second.

Blades Brown, the second 16-year-old in two weeks to make a cut, tied for 26th at 19 under after a 69. Last week, Kris Kim advanced to the weekend in the Byron Nelson.

OTHER TOURS

Just over a year after Michael Hendry was diagnosed with leukemia, he made it all the way back by winning For The Players By The Players on the Japan Golf Tour. Hendry, a 44-year-old from New Zealand, earned six points in modified Stableford scoring for a one-point victory over Hideto Kobukuro. Hendry, who had to turn down his spot in the British Open last year while being treated, won for the sixth time in his career. … Ruixin Liu of China won the Carlisle Arizona Women’s Golf Classic for her seventh career Epson Tour title. She closed with a 7-under 64 at the TPC Scottsdale’s Champions Course to finish at 14-under 270, three strokes ahead of Mariel Galdiano. Hyo-Joo Kim of South Korea closed with a 4-under 68 for a three-shot victory in the Aramco Team Series on the Ladies European Tour in South Korea. … Joel Moscatel of Spain birdied the last hole for a 5-under 67 and a one-shot victory over Tapio Pulkkanen and Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen in the Spanish Challenge on the European Challenge Tour. … Michael Hollick closed with a 5-under 68 and won the FBC Zimbabwe Open by two shots over Darren Fichardt on the Sunshine Tour. … Chisato Iwai closed with a 5-under 67 and won the RKB Mitsui Matsushima Ladies by three shots over Saiki Fujita and Miyuu Yamashita. Iwai now has two wins and two runner-up finishes this year on the Japan LPGA. … Yewon Lee shot a 4-under 68 for a three-shot victory in the NH Investment & Securities Ladies Championship on the Korean LPGA.

CLIFTON, N.J. (AP) — When two-time NCAA champion Rose Zhang came out of Stanford and became the first woman to win her professional debut since 1951, the sky was suddenly the limit.

Everyone expected Zhang to win again and again and again, much like Nelly Korda has been doing these days with her five-event streak.

Something unexpected happened. After winning the Mizuho Americas Open in Jersey City, New Jersey, last year, Zhang hasn’t won again. She played well last year, posting four top- 10 finishes and earning $1.39 million in 13 events, missing only one cut. The Ws just haven’t been there.

Back in New Jersey this week, the 20-year-old tied the tournament record with a 9-under 63 to take a two-stroke lead over Madelene Sagstrom in the Cognizant Founders Cup at the Uppper Montclair Country Club. Korda was six shots back.

The bogey-free round featured nine birdies, including one on the No. 18 hole of the event that honors the 13 founding members of the LPGA.

“It’s been a really interesting journey for me,” Zhang said. “I think the first couple months that I was out here it was very adrenaline based where I was just living the life and kind of going out, having a lot of fun, no expectations, just learning and taking everything in.

After the rush wore off, fatigue settled in and Zhang found it difficult to get back on track. This season was complicated because after playing in the season opener, she took took months off to finish her degree. She has played in six events overall, missing two cuts. Her best finish was a tie for fifth in the Match Play event.

“I just want to reiterate, it’s so hard winning out here on tour,” Zhang said. “What Nelly is he is doing is something quite unheard of, and only two other players have done it before. It’s the best players in the world, and sometimes I have to remind myself of that. Just because I was winning a lot in college and in this game, you lose more than you win.”

Zhang said it felt like she was on auto pilot at Upper Montclair, a layout she played the front nine on Tuesday and the back nine on Wednesday. That’s her only experience with the layout.

“I do think this golf course is very suiting for the eye, and if you’re able to hit good shots and be in the right places, you’ll be able to play well out here,” Zhang said.

If Zhang does, Korda’s record-tying winning streak will come to an end.

This round boosted Zhang’s confidence.

“It’s pretty big actually, just because I know that the number’s out there for me, and if I’m able to get dialed in and do what I need to prior to playing an event, and also even just during the event, at least the number’s out there and I can kind of let free a little bit more to play my own game,” she said.

Real Madrid’s final La Liga match of season set to accommodate Taylor Swift tour

Real Madrid will play their final La Liga match of the season on Saturday, May 25 to accommodate Taylor Swift’s concert at the Santiago Bernabeu the following week.

The Spanish club are due to play Real Betis on the final day of the Spanish league season over the weekend of May 25-26.

Earlier this month, The Athletic reported that Madrid had made a request to La Liga for their final game of the campaign to be played on Saturday , rather than Sunday, due to Swift’s tour which will include a concert at their stadium.

Swift’s Madrid leg of The Eras Tour takes place across two dates, May 29 and 30, with the facilities requiring sufficient time after the previous football match to accommodate the event.

La Liga has agreed to Madrid’s request, with Betis having no objection to the match being played on the Saturday. The decision, however, may impact other league fixtures.

Matches must be played simultaneously on the final day of the campaign if the outcome of one has a material impact on another in league classification.

As things stand, Madrid are six points clear of Girona at the top of La Liga and eight ahead of Barcelona , in third. Betis are currently sixth in the standings, occupying a Europa Conference League spot, two points ahead of Real Sociedad and seven points behind Athletic Bilbao.

It means that the La Liga title could be decided on a day that suits Madrid’s schedule. To ensure sporting fairness, however, Madrid, Girona, and Betis would need to play their final league fixtures simultaneously.

Swift is set to visit a number of football stadiums as part of the 2024 tour, including Liverpool’s Anfield, Wembley Stadium in London and Lyon’s Groupama Stadium.

Concerns had been raised over her Lyon dates, with the risk of them clashing with the Ligue 1 relegation play-off. Lyon sit three points above the Ligue 1 relegation play-off place.
