The Trongone Band

Hailing from Richmond, VA, The Trongone Band is touring in support of their 2017 debut album, Keys to the House, released on Harmonized Records. With a sound that Paste Magazine likens to the “freak-outs of My Morning Jacket with the Muscle Shoals-inspired Leslie speakers and The Band’s narrative storytelling”, The Trongone Band is turning heads and making an impact on the Southern Rock ‘n’ Soul and Americana scenes.

Formed by brothers Andrew and Johnny Trongone with father John Sr on bass, The Trongone Band (tron-GO-knee) has grown from a family affair, playing a weekly sold out residency at Richmond’s Cary Street Cafe, to a full on touring machine with the addition of keyboardist Ben “Wolfe” White and bassist Todd Herrington. In the words of Live for Live Music, “the quartet has come together to create an old-school and all-in-the-family sound reminiscent of the Allman Brothers while still keeping it fresh with their cutting edge original compositions that also infuse funk and blues into the mix.”

Keeping with the homegrown vibe, the band nestled into the woods outside of RVA, tapping into Montrose Recording’s Flickinger console, one of only seven remaining in the world. Known as the console that revolutionized the recording industry in the 60s & 70s, the Flickinger provided the warm sounds that turned into Keys to the House and brought to life what MusicFestNews described as “imagery of boxcar drifters, rolling hills and dirt roads that are easy to close your eyes and get lost in”.

Summer and Fall of 2017 saw The Trongone Band taking Keys to the House on the road while touring in support of Americana stalwarts Reckless Kelly, American Aquarium and Cris Jacobs. Having graced the stages of Virginia’s Roosterwalk, Tennessee’s Riverbend Music Festival, Florida’s Riverhawk Festival, West Virginia’s Deep Roots Mountain Revival and The Allman Brothers’ Peach Festival, the band is primed for a busy 2018 festival season. This four-piece ensemble may not all be related, but with a chemistry so emphatically discernible, it's fair to call them brothers.

SONG PREMIERE: The Trongone Band Tackle Temptation with Soulful 70s Blues Rocker “Ain’t Worth A Dime”

Brothers Andrew and Johnny Trongone are better known as the leaders of Richmond rock n’ roll outfit The Trongone Band. They will release their Dave Schools (Widespread Panic)-produced EP Don’t Give Up on Love this fall. Recorded in their collective hometown, the EP is the follow-up to their celebrated debut LP, Keys To the House (Harmonized Records). The band will be performing select dates in Richmond on July 31st and three nights at Key West’s Green Parrot this August. The brothers plan to tour Europe extensively in early 2022 in support of Don’t Give Up on Love .

“What a pleasure to return to my hometown and to work with The Trongone Band. It’s great to see that the spirit of rock n roll still thrives in Richmond,” raves Dave Schools.

Today  Glide  is excited to premiere “Ain’t Worth A Dime,” one of the standout tracks on the new album. Firing up with a simple beat, sparse and haunting slide guitar, and soulful organ, the band lays into a twangy guitar track and blues-inflected vocals. Building layers of sound into a thick, 70s-style blues rocker, the song brings to mind acts like the Black Crowes, Gov’t Mule, and Greyhounds while also taking on its own style. Commanding vocals are complemented by a groovy rock soundtrack that is sprawling and ferocious while also carrying a sense of restrained cool. Lyrically, the song dwells on the various vices many of us partake in and sometimes struggle with, making it perfect for a dark nightclub.

“This song means a lot to me. It grew from just a groove we were messing around with in pre production. Producer Dave Schools made it a point that we would only attempt this song at the end of every session when we were tired and worn out. We were grinding. He wanted to capture a certain vibe though. We’d dim the lights real low to where we could barely see each other and just eased into the tune until it felt right. If it wasn’t there, we’d call it and try it again the next night. We ended up getting it on the third day. The vocal took a few takes too. Finally got it after Dave sent my brother into the booth with some scotch. We had just got back from a European tour so lyrically my head was thinking about all the red light districts in Germany and Prague. Dark, eerie, temptation everywhere. Though it isn’t particularly about that, but more so the bigger picture. People’s vices. Sex, drugs, booze, gambling, etc, and how those addictions just aren’t worth it in the end.” – Andrew Trongone

About South Hill Banks:

South Hill Banks – Lance Thomas (vocals, guitar), Eric Horrocks (mandolin, vocals), Ryan Horrocks (banjo), Dan Fiasconaro (guitar, vocals), and Matt Eversole (upright bass) – have carved a niche for themselves in the Richmond music scene with their genre-bending psychedelic bluegrass sound. Formed in August 2015 in Richmond, Virginia, South Hill Banks pulls from a wide range of influences such as Phish, Tony Rice, The Grateful Dead, Doc Watson, and Sam Bush to keep audiences entertained with a blend of sounds old and new.   Since the release of their debut album, Riverside Dr., South Hill Banks have taken central Virginia by storm, headlining a multitude of small- and medium-sized venues and working aside national touring groups with a devoted and ever-growing fan base following every step of the way.   South Hill Banks are currently performers-in-residence at The Camel in Richmond, Virginia, appearing on the 2nd Friday of every month with past supporting acts such as Dead 27s, James Justin & Co., Forlorn Strangers, Kendall Street Company, The Floorboards, Lord Nelson, Maradeen, Brock Butler (Perpetual Groove), Will Overman Band. Currently making a splash on the Southern Rock scene with the June 2017 release of their debut album, Keys to the House , Richmond VA’s own Trongone Band is branching out on tour throughout the east coast and adding new fans to their devout local base. The band generously etched a few minutes out of their tight schedule to answer a few questions for MonkeyGoose magazine about their inspirations and upcoming events.

MG: The Trongone Band is built around the foundation of two brothers, Andrew and Johnny Trongone. At what age did each one pick up an instrument, and was there any particular song or artist that inspired that move? 

TB: I picked up the guitar when I was 10, and it was Clapton and Skynyrd that really got me excited about the instrument. My brother got some drums when he was 8, Zeppelin was the band that really inspired him to start playing. 

MG: Your debut album Keys to the House has a strong, coherent style throughout. In listening to it, I can hear influences of The Black Crowes, The Allman Brothers, and other Southern Rock greats. In your opinions, what bands out there today lead the resurgence of Southern Rock? What is The Trongone Band’s personal goal? 

TB: Lots of great bands out there keeping southern rock alive. Some personal favorites are Sturgill Simpson, Blackberry Smoke, Jason Isbell, and American Aquarium, Band of Heathens, to list a few. Keep writing, keep traveling, and keep rock n roll alive. 

MG: My “must listen” track from Keys to the House is the lead track, “Blind”, with its soulful harmonies and funky vibe. Who wrote the song, and what was the inspiration?

TB: We wrote the music collectively. The lyrics came later. I sat on the song for while before the write words came out. The inspiration came from specific things that were going on in my life at the time. The song is all about realization. 

MG: I’m from the Hampton Roads area in southeastern Virginia, and we are fortunate to have a small but tight music scene, especially in the blues genre. How supportive is the scene in Richmond, and was it difficult to make the jump out of Richmond and become a regional name?   

TB: Richmond’s music scene is super supportive to one another and is constantly growing. We’re also very tight, like one big family. Lots of amazing musicians, lots of music lovers that support the scene. It definitely takes time and work to grow regionally, but luckily Richmond is relatively close to multiple close by cities so that helps when starting to branch out. 

MG: The Trongone Band has recently started a fall tour of the east coast. Over this past year, which music events were highlights for the band, and what major events are you looking forward to? 

TB: We always have a blast at Roosterwalk Festival and this year was no different, also our tour with American Aquarium was a major highlight. Looking forward to getting down to Texas, New Orleans, and back over seas soon.

Formed as a family by brothers Andrew and Johnny, The Trongone Band enlisted much sought-after keyboardist Ben "Wolfe" White and award-winning bassist Todd Herrington to solidify their touring lineup. Herrington adds a crucial dimension of deep pocket groove and funk to the already seasoned unit. 

As a collaborative effort, the band is set to push forward and tour from coast to coast and continue their growth as a band. This four-piece ensemble may not all be related, but with a chemistry so emphatically discernible, it's fair to call them brothers.

Trongone Band's “STANDOUT” NEW SINGLE ‘AIN’T WORTH A DIME’

Brothers Andrew and Johnny Trongone, better known as leaders of Richmond rock n’ roll outfit, Trongone Band , premiered their latest offering, the Dave Schools’ produced single ‘Ain’t Worth a Dime’ via Glide Magazine.  Glide cheers, “Ain’t Worth a Dime’ [is] one of the standout tracks on the new album. Firing up with a simple beat, sparse and haunting slide guitar, and soulful organ, the band lays into a twangy guitar track and blues-inflected vocals. Building layers of sound into a thick, 70s-style blues rocker, the song brings to mind acts like the Black Crowes, Gov’t Mule, and Greyhounds while also taking on its own style. Commanding vocals are complemented by a groovy rock soundtrack that is sprawling and ferocious while also carrying a sense of restrained cool. Lyrically, the song dwells on the various vices many of us partake in and sometimes struggle with, making it perfect for a dark nightclub.”

Trongone Band will release their Dave Schools (Widespread Panic) produced EP, Don’t Give Up on Love, this fall.  Recorded in their collective hometown, the EP is the follow up to the band’s celebrated debut LP, Keys to the House (Harmonized Records). The brothers will be performing select dates in Richmond on July 31st and three nights at Key West’s Green Parrot this August.  The brothers plan to tour Europe extensively in early 2022 in support of Don’t Give Up on Love.

“What a pleasure to return to my hometown and to work with The Trongone Band. It’s great to see that the spirit of rock n roll still thrives in Richmond,” raves Dave Schools. “I want people to really feel this song. Like you’re kind of lost in a foreign town but don’t care. Dim the lights, pour a glass of scotch, and turn it up, because that’s what we did,” says guitarist Andrew Trongone.

“This song means a lot to me. It grew from just a groove we were messing around with in pre-production. Producer Dave Schools made it a point that we would only attempt this song at the end of every session when we were tired and worn out. We were grinding. He wanted to capture a certain vibe though. We’d dim the lights real low to where we could barely see each other and just eased into the tune until it felt right. If it wasn’t there, we’d call it and try it again the next night. We ended up getting it on the third day. The vocal took a few takes, too. Finally got it after Dave sent my brother into the booth with some scotch. We had just got back from a European tour so lyrically my head was thinking about all the red light districts in Germany and Prague. Dark, eerie, temptation everywhere. Though it isn’t particularly about that, but more so the bigger picture. People’s vices. Sex, drugs, booze, gambling, etc, and how those addictions just aren’t worth it in the end.”

The duo is joined by drummer Bill Vitt and bassist John Kahn, who soon became a lifelong Garcia collaborator.
