Emerald Bay State Park Emerald Bay State Park free

U.S. News Insider Tip: Emerald Bay can become very crowded during the day, especially during the summer months. Visitors are frequently ticketed for parking in areas marked "no parking at any time." Arrive early in the day if you wish to avoid crowds and secure parking. – Katie Joll

Carved millions of years ago by passing glaciers, this state park is a must-see for anyone looking to experience Lake Tahoe's beauty. Surrounded by towering trees, this inlet along the southwest shore is known for its monumental granite cliffs and stunning panoramas. Follow Highway 89 south from Tahoe City, California, (about 20 miles) or north from South Lake Tahoe, California, (about 10 miles) and you'll come across the spectacular vistas of Emerald Bay. Make sure you have a camera on hand – the scenery is breathtaking and travelers say there are photo opportunities everywhere you turn. Emerald Bay offers some stunning hikes on popular trails, including the 1.9-mile Eagle Lake Trail, an out-and-back hike that takes visitors about an hour to complete and features waterfalls, granite peaks and even swimming opportunities.

Sand Harbor State Park Sand Harbor State Park

Visitors who want to see the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe flock to Sand Harbor. This is a great launch point for summer water activities. Swimmers, boaters, scuba divers, and fishers will all find something to enjoy in this beautiful stretch of Lake Tahoe. Picnic areas with barbecues are located in the shade of huge cedars and pines. This is also the site of the annual Shakespeare Festival.

If you're there in winter, Sand Harbor is a picturesque spot for photography, or for a stroll around the interpretive trail. You can expect that there may be snow on the trails during winter.

For those who prefer a more sedate pace, there are several spa options, gambling at the Grand Lodge Casino, lazy beach days, shopping and several well-rated restaurants. One very popular activity is to head a few miles south down Highway 28 to Sand Harbor. The azure waters and sandy beaches are very attractive to visitors, but it's often necessary to arrive early in the day during the summer months to ensure parking. Once there, the clear-sided kayak tours are a well-rated activity that should be reserved ahead.

Donner Memorial State Park and Emigrant Trail Museum Donner Memorial State Park and Emigrant Trail Museum free

The Donner Memorial State Park and Emigrant Trail Museum honor one of the darkest moments in American pioneering. Here, you'll find a great stone pedestal commemorating the Donner Party, the legendary pioneers who fell victim to the harsh Sierra Nevada winter of 1846 to 1847. The party (originally consisting of nearly 90 emigrants) was en route to California when their wagon train encountered a severe snow storm. Only half of the pioneers survived (many by resorting to cannibalism). The stone marker near the Emigrant Trail Museum stands 22 feet tall.

For more information about the tragic Donner Party, head to the Donner Memorial State Museum. There you'll also find intricate dioramas detailing the history of railroad development in the Sierra Nevada region. It's a great spot for history buffs, according to recent visitors, though some expressed that they felt parts of the story were sanitized to be more "kid friendly."

Kings Beach State Recreation Area Kings Beach State Recreation Area free

U.S. News Insider Tip: For the friends and lovers out there, Kings Beach is home to a "love locks" pier. Come prepared with your own padlock if you'd like to add yours to the collection! – Katie Joll

Stretching along Lake Tahoe's northern California shore, this beach is one of the largest in the area. The 979 feet of shoreline is ideal for swimming, sunbathing and boating; plus, there is a picnic area and a playground, as well as restroom facilities. There's also a shop offering kayak, paddleboard and pedal boat rentals, among other crafts.

Palisades Tahoe Palisades Tahoe

U.S. News Insider Tip: If you'd like a ski-in, ski-out experience and to avoid any parking crowds, a stay at Everline Resort might be for you. The resort has a Palisades Tahoe ski lift in its backyard so guests can quite literally ski out the door. – Katie Joll

Encompassing both Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadows, Palisades Tahoe is considered one of the world's finest ski resorts thanks to its nearly 6,000 acres of terrain and its advanced lift system. Plus, it sees about 400 inches of snow per year, meaning Palisades operates one of the longest ski and snowboard seasons in Lake Tahoe. It's no wonder the resort was chosen to host the 1960 Winter Olympics. Formerly called Squaw Valley, it was renamed in 2020 to avoid continued use of the term squaw – a known racist and sexist slur against indigenous women.

Lake Tahoe Balloons Lake Tahoe Balloons

It's hard to beat Tahoe on a good day, and one of the best ways to see it in clear weather is from up high. Lake Tahoe Balloons inflates, launches and lands on the world's only U.S. Coast Guard-certified aircraft carrier for hot air balloons. That's right: You'll launch from the water. Visitors are awestruck to land on the lake and rate this activity as a top experience and one that shouldn't be missed.

Located at the Tahoe Keys Marina in South Lake Tahoe, the balloon flights operate early in the morning, beginning just before sunrise (between 5:30 a.m. and 7 a.m., depending on the time of year). Typically, they take two flights of passengers so that while one group flies, the other remains on the boat, taking in the sights. Packages include beverages and refreshments, and private flights can be arranged. Guests are advised to wear layers as temperatures can be cold early in the mornings, even during summer.

Homewood Mountain Resort Homewood Mountain Resort

According to skiers, this small resort on Lake Tahoe's west shore (about 7 miles south of Tahoe City, California) doesn't have the crowds of nearby titans like Palisades Tahoe and Heavenly Resort . Sitting on 1,260 acres, Homewood features 67 runs and eight lifts. But its laid-back atmosphere and spectacular scenery impress visitors, who call it one of the most gorgeous resorts with amazing lake views and a great place to ski through the trees. Some recent visitors did not feel the experience met expectations, noting potential maintenance issues on the mountain, mixed reviews of ski lessons and lack of flexibility when weather prevented them from using prebooked tickets.

Homewood is also the perfect spot for those trying to experience Lake Tahoe on a budget, as lift tickets are cheaper than those at nearby resorts (starting as low as $104 per day for adults). Some travelers did not feel the experience was good for beginner or young skiers, but others describe it as a good place to take lessons.

Trying to avoid this region's parking challenges? Van Sickle Bi-State Park distinguishes itself from Lake Tahoe's many other outdoor areas in three ways: it is walkable from the casinos , it is open to equestrians and it offers a connector trail to the famous Tahoe Rim Trail. Until the 1990s, the Van Sickle family – which donated the 542 acres to create this state park – operated a stable here with dozens of horses.

Recent visitors delighted in this relatively uncrowded hiking area. Many praised the well-marked trails and opportunity to see a waterfall. The park is popular with visitors staying within walking distance, and several visited it more than once. That's high praise for a lake bursting with beautiful recreation areas!

Northstar California Resort Northstar California Resort

Although it's smaller than Palisades Tahoe or Heavenly Mountain Resort – boasting a mere 3,170 acres and almost 100 runs – Northstar California Resort is often rated among the top ski resorts in the West. In fact, Northstar had to construct an "express gondola" to accommodate the number of people who couldn't wait to hit the slopes.

Aside from skiing and snowboarding, other Northstar activities include ice skating and snowshoeing as well as swimming and biking in summer. After a long day on the slopes (or the trails or the rink or the pool), catch up on your rest and relaxation with some time at a nearby spa. There is also a movie theater on the property, as well as several shops and eateries. Recent visitors extolled the resort's awesome trails and family-friendly activities, but noted crowds and occasional service issues. Some have complained that accommodations in the village were below expectations.

Many companies also offer tours lasting two to four hours during the day, which may be the most kid-friendly option. Tours typically include a mix of history, sightseeing, and sometimes opportunities to swim or tube in the lake.

Many recent visitors to Lake Tahoe considered this a must-do activity. Some cruises may be on the more crowded side; it is worth looking up reviews and capacity for particular boat tours before booking. Depending on your travel style, you may want to begin a visit with one of these cruises to help orient you to the lake area, or cap off your vacation with this activity. For many travelers it was the highlight of their trip.

Heavenly Ski Resort & Gondola Heavenly Ski Resort & Gondola

With its summit soaring 10,067 feet above sea level, this wildly popular resort truly is heavenly. The Heavenly Resort also offers daycare programs and children's ski lessons, so feel free to bring the kids along.

While fresh powder and stunning lake views are a key draw, Heavenly's gondola is a year-round (wind-dependent) attraction. These suspended cable cars carry passengers more than 2 miles through the mountains to a 9,200-foot-high observation deck. Rides will cost you a small fortune ($102 for adults, $54 for kids during peak seasons)), but travelers agree that the experience is a must for first-time visitors. In addition, in the summer at the resort's Epic Discovery adventure area, visitors can enjoy zip lines, a mountain coaster, climbing walls and guided hiking tours.

Recent visitors enjoyed the views and hikes, which are moderately strenuous. Many note that this area is a bit trickier to navigate than other parts of the shore, as signage is limited. Parking can be challenging. Some recommend taking a ride-share instead.

First Timer’s Guide to Lake Tahoe: Vacation Tips

By: Author Leslie Harvey

Posted on Published: June 3, 2023

Share this!:

Located on the California-Nevada border in the Sierra Mountains, Lake Tahoe is a popular vacation getaway. Day trippers and weekend warriors from Northern California visit often, but Tahoe is a bucket list destination for travelers from all over the country and even the world as well. With skiing and winter sports in colder months and boating and beach activities in summer, the area offers a wide variety of pretty epic vacation experiences year round.

Lake Tahoe through the trees in summer sun.

I’ve lived in the Bay Area for over 15 years and have traveled the 3-4 hours to Lake Tahoe on dozens of trips. My family has visited at a variety of times of year. I’ve also been to quite a few different cities and communities that encircle the lake. To say this Tahoe guide is a bit overdue is probably an understatement!

No matter what time of year you plan to visit, it’s important to do your homework for a Tahoe vacation. It’s a huge area with some potential travel pitfalls if you fail to plan. Here’s everything that a first time visitor needs to know about visiting Lake Tahoe.

(Trips With Tykes uses affiliate links which means I may earn a small commission if you purchase through links in this post. See our full disclosure policy linked in the menu at the bottom of this site.)

Traveling to Lake Tahoe in California and Nevada? Whether you are visiting to ski in winter or hit the beach in summer, this first timers guide to the Lake Tahoe area has all the top tips. Where to stay, closest airports, and top things to do.

Where is Lake Tahoe Located?

Lake Tahoe is located in the Sierra Mountains on the border between California and Nevada. It’s about 85 miles northeast of the city of Sacramento, as the crow flies, but farther given the available driving routes.

Lake Tahoe is the country’s largest alpine lake and is the second deepest lake in the United States. It’s best known for its gorgeous crystal blue color, spawning the famous conservation message turned bumper sticker “Keep Tahoe Blue.”

Coming from most Northern California destinations like Sacramento or San Francisco, there are two major routes into Lake Tahoe over the Sierra mountains.

  • Interstate 80 : Interstate 80 passes over Donner Summit into the northern region of the lake. To get to the shore, travelers exit I-80 in the town of Truckee onto either Highway 89 or Highway 267.
  • Highway 50 : Near Sacramento, US Highway 50 splits off from I-80 taking guests to the southern end of Lake Tahoe. Highway 50 is a narrower route, but is sometimes an easier drive because it won’t have the same number of big rigs loaded up driving on it.

There are other smaller roads that lead to Tahoe for guests coming from Southern California or from eastern directions. Some of those routes may be inaccessible in winter, so check road conditions regularly. I have put together all my best tips for driving to Lake Tahoe in winter already to help, including what social media accounts to follow for the most accurate and up-to-date road conditions. Lake Tahoe can have very severe winter driving conditions. Guests who visit any time from late fall well into spring need to do some real homework in preparation and carry the right gear (like chains!).

Winter Driving to Tahoe on Interstate 80

Sub-Regions, Major Cities, & Layout of Lake Tahoe

What many first time visitors to Lake Tahoe don’t understand is just how enormous the lake and the surrounding communities are. Driving the roads that encircle the lake takes about 2 full hours. The region spans three counties in California (Placer, El Dorado, and Nevada) and two counties and one city in Nevada (Washoe and Douglas Counties plus Carson City).

And because there are lots of mountains plus an enormous lake dotting the topography, there are not always direct routes between different places in the Tahoe area. Don’t expect to seamlessly hop from one area to another without some effort.

If you plan to explore the entire region, you definitely need at least a week. This is especially true when visiting during winter months when weather will slow you down. If you only have 2-3 days, I’d recommend picking a single home base and exploring a sub-region or single town or resort near the lake. Locals roughly divide the area between “North Lake” and “South Lake” but there are even further divisions than just that.

Major cities and neighborhoods of note in and around Lake Tahoe are:

Truckee, CA

Located right on I-80 just northwest of the lake is the city of Truckee, CA. Truckee has a laid back mining town vibe that is always welcoming. The Truckee area is home to several quality moderately priced hotels in the north lake area, including ones in national chains where guests can cash in or earn hotel loyalty points.

Kings Beach, CA & Incline Village, NV

Located due north of the lake on the water are several towns that blend together as they span North Lake Tahoe’s California/Nevada border. On the California side, the largest city is Kings Beach where a lot of moderately-priced Lake Tahoe vacation rentals can be found.

As you cross the border on State Route 28, the casinos of Crystal Bay, NV line the road. Incline Village, NV is the largest town a few miles farther down the road. Incline Village is a popular second home location for Californians seeking a lower tax state. For travelers, the beautiful lakeside Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe is a popular spot to stay.

Tahoe City, CA

On the northwest side of the lake where Highway 89 hits the beach road is Tahoe City, CA. The area has a cute walkable downtown with some beautiful beaches. The resort communities of Dollar Point and Chinquapin nearby are popular places to find rentals.

South Lake Tahoe, CA

Heavenly Skiing Tahoe View

South Lake Tahoe, CA is the largest city in the Lake Tahoe area. Located directly south of the lake right on the Nevada line, the city is home to Heavenly Resort, one of the largest ski resorts in the area. The high rise casinos of Stateline, NV just across the border are visible and easy walking distance from Heavenly’s gondola in the city center.

Reno is the closest big city near the Tahoe area, located a little over an hour’s driving distance northeast of the lake. The city of course is known for its casinos and nightlife, but plenty of family-friendly and outdoor adventures are available there too.

What are the Best Airports for Flying to Lake Tahoe?

Many visitors to Tahoe are Californians and others from drive markets. But plenty of visitors choose to fly in as well. Given its location high in the mountains, access to Lake Tahoe by air isn’t super easy or obvious. There is a small Truckee Tahoe airport for the well-heeled with private planes. But for the rest of us, the best airports with commercial service to get you to Tahoe include:

Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO)

The closest airport to the Lake Tahoe area is located in Reno, Nevada. RNO is served by 11 major carriers, including Alaska, Allegiant, American, Delta, JetBlue, JSX, Southwest, Spirit, Sun Country, United, and Volaris. Collectively these airlines serve more than 20 destinations non-stop, mostly in the West and Midwest, so availability is pretty solid.

The drive from RNO to Incline Village is about 45 minutes, Drive times to other destinations in the area are a bit longer (about 1:15 to South Lake Tahoe in regular weather conditions).

Sacramento International (SMF)

The even bigger airport in Sacramento serves over 40 non-stop destinations and has commercial service from Aeromexico, Alaska, American, Air Canada, Delta, Frontier, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, United, and Volaris. The drive from Sacramento to most destinations in Tahoe is right at about two hours.

Oakland International Airport (OAK) or San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

Many travelers to Tahoe spend time all over the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California, so one of the major airports in the Bay Area may be a choice as well. These airports are both served by too many airlines to count. They often offer some super-cheap travel deals, depending on where you are coming from.

Just be aware the drive from OAK or SFO to Tahoe is long and can be very traffic-filled. While many Tahoe destinations can be reached in 3.5 hours if you have smooth sailing, having that kind of traffic luck in such a busy corridor is a rare occurrence. As someone who has spent 11 hours driving that very same route in a winter storm, be advised.

What is the Best Season to Visit Lake Tahoe?

Tahoe is truly a year round destination, so you can’t go wrong with a visit any time of the year. Of course, the offerings are substantially different depending on what season you visit. Here’s what you can expect each time of year:

Tahoe in Winter

Diamond Peak Views

The Lake Tahoe area gets over 200 inches in annual snowfall (300-500 inches at higher elevations), so winter sports dominate the tourism scene in winter months. The best conditions and peak season are in January and February, but many ski resorts try to open by Thanksgiving and certainly before Christmas.

Tahoe in Spring

The snow in Tahoe continues well into spring, with most ski resorts keeping the slopes open through spring break into early or mid-April. Snows sometimes don’t melt until much later though. In fact, the major Tahoe ski resort Palisades Tahoe (formerly known as Squaw Valley) was able to offer skiing on July 4th a few years ago and made it again to Independence Day in 2023!

If you want more spring-like weather on a Tahoe trip without winter driving conditions, you won’t reliably see that until at least May.

Tahoe in Summer

Tahoe Vacation Rental on the water in summer.

Tahoe in summer is glorious. Because the snows linger well into spring and sometimes into early summer, June and even early July can be chillier than you might expect, especially at night.

Late July and all through August are the best times to visit for the warmest temperatures and all the adventures on the lake. Summer daytime temperatures are often well into the 80s, making it a perfect place for summer activities.

Tahoe in Fall

After Labor Day Weekend ends, a lot of tourists pack up and leave Tahoe. This makes the early fall shoulder season one of the better times to visit for lower crowds. The cooler temps in September and early October before the snow starts falling regularly make it a great time of year to hike. The area has some beautiful fall colors as well.

Just watch weather forecasts carefully, as early snows can start throwing a wrench into travel plans in October some years.

Things to Do in and Around Lake Tahoe

What you can do in and around Lake Tahoe is heavily dependent on what season you are visiting in. Here are a few of the major activities to add to your travel agenda, season-permitting:

Skiing & Snowboarding

Kid Skiing with Parents and Baby at Lake Tahoe ski resort.

In the winter, the biggest reason to visit Tahoe is to ski and snowboard at one of the area’s more than dozen resorts. Tahoe has mega resorts, mid-size ski mountains, and the tiniest of community ski hills.

The three ski resorts our family visits the most are Northstar California Resort, Diamond Peak, and Heavenly. Northstar is a full service resort operated by Vail known for its luxury vibe and family-friendly offerings (see my complete guide to skiing Northstar with kids for a deep dive). Diamond Peak is a mid-sized resort great for teaching kids to ski frequented more by locals that remains a bit of a hidden gem (check out my Diamond Peak guide here ). And Heavenly is an enormous resort spanning many peaks with multiple base areas with a little of something for everyone (see my Heavenly guide here ).

Of course, every family has their favorite Tahoe ski resorts and ones that have become traditions for them. It’s fun to mix it up and visit as many as you can. I’ve skied almost all of them, but still have a couple on my list to complete the Tahoe ski circuit (Palisades and Homewood continue to elude me but hopefully not for long!). To decide what resort is best for you, see my comparison of the family-friendly amenities at every Tahoe ski resort , which I update annually with prices and details.

Sledding, Tubing, & Snow Play

For families not interested in skiing or snowboarding, but wanting time in the snow, Tahoe has that too. The area has a number of areas for sledding, tubing, and other snow play activities. Places to visit in winter include:

  • Adventure Mountain Lake Tahoe : Located near Echo Summit on Highway 50 on the way to South Lake Tahoe, this snow play area has groomed tubing lanes and lots of place for sledding and snow play.
  • Soda Springs : Soda Springs offers some skiing (especially for beginners), but it’s mainly a giant snow play winter wonderland. There’s a tubing area, Planet Kids for little ones under age 7, mini-snowmobiles, and more. Located just over Donner Summit on the way to North Lake Tahoe, this area is just minutes from Sugar Bowl and Boreal.
  • Many of the major ski resorts (Northstar, Palisades Tahoe, etc.) offer tubing and other snow play activities as well.

Hiking, Mountain Biking & Outdoor Adventure Activities

Hiking with a Baby Near Lake Tahoe

The opportunities to get outdoors in the warmer months are pretty much endless in Tahoe. Depending on where you are staying, find a few nearby hikes. (Check out the 8 Best Hikes for Families Near Lake Tahoe from fellow NorCal blogger Jenna at This is My Happiness as a great place to start. And if you have little ones, be sure to read my tips and tricks for hiking with toddlers .)

Mountain biking is also extremely popular, with several of the ski resort slopes becoming biking trails when the snow melts. A few adventure activity operators to consider:

  • Heavenly’s Ridge Rider Mountain Coaster : A summer alpine coaster that sends guests speeding down the mountain.
  • Woodward Tahoe : An adventure sports center affiliated with Boreal Mountain that operates year round.
  • Northstar’s Bike Park : The slopes of Northstar turn into mountain biking trails in summer at Tahoe’s only lift serviced bike park.

Lake Tahoe Beaches

Blue water and beach on Lake Tahoe in summer.

A wide variety of beaches encircle the lake. Spending a Lake Tahoe day in the sand and sun is a must-do in summer months.

Parking can be a challenge at some of the most popular state park beaches. It’s smart to arrive early if you don’t want to get shut out. If you can find a vacation rental in a community with private beach access or a secret smaller beach that tourists don’t know about, that makes things even easier.

And of course there are beaches you can pull up to from the water. One of the most popular where we anchored on our last trip is Chimney Beach on the Nevada side of the lake.

Lake Tahoe Chimney Beach

One important word of warning if you plan time in the water: anyone coming from a warm weather climate should know that Lake Tahoe is COLD. This is true even on the warmest days of summer. Being from Alabama originally, it’s always a shock to my system. I have found, however, I am able to tolerate it in early August which is the warmest time of year. If you plan to spend substantial time in the water or have young kids, buying or renting a wetsuit isn’t a bad idea. (We found this inexpensive wetsuit for my son that works quite well!)

Boating & Water Activities

Speaking of water, I highly recommend not just staying on shore in the warmer months while in Tahoe. Here are a few ideas for getting out onto the lake.

  • Boat or jet ski rentals : Most of the cities along the lake have companies that rent boats. We used Boatsetter on our last trip to find a rental in Tahoe City near where we were staying.
  • Paddleboarding : SUP is crazy popular on the smooth water coves along Lake Tahoe. The most popular spot – and the site of thousands of Instagram photos – is Emerald Bay on the southern side of the lake.
  • Kayaking : The shorelines are dotted with kayaks in summer months. Tons of local companies will rent kayaks if you don’t have or can’t transport your own.
  • Parasailing : Several operators will take guests out on the lake parasailing. This is a great way to get on the water if you don’t want the responsibility of driving a boat yourself.

A few local operators offering several of these rentals and services:

  • North Tahoe Watersports (locations in Kings Beach or Tahoe City)
  • Tahoe Sports (South Lake Tahoe)
  • Action Watersports (South Lake Tahoe)

Tahoe Area Casinos

Open year round regardless of weather are the many casinos on the Nevada side of the lake. To the southern side of the lake, the high rises at Harveys , Hard Rock , and Harrah’s are the big players. On the northern side, there are a few smaller casinos in Crystal Bay as well as one at the Hyatt Regency in Incline Village .

Several of the casinos offer the usual Vegas-style shows and performers that come through on occasion for some additional entertainment offerings. Even if you don’t play, the casino hotels offer some great lodging options as well, often on the cheap.

Floating the Truckee River

Rafting Truckee River Tahoe City California

One of the most popular activities in summer is grabbing an inflatable raft, filling up a cooler, and relaxingly floating down the Truckee River. Local operator Truckee River Rafting Company has parking available at their large facility and buses you up the river so you can float back to where you started.

Historical Sites & Museums

Although the great outdoors is the big draw of Tahoe, there are a number of museums and historical sites with something to offer too. A few of the best to explore include:

  • Emigrant Trail Museum : Tahoe is famous (well, more accurately, infamous) for the trip of the Donner Party and you can learn all about that history here. Located in Donner Memorial State Park , there are also outdoor trails to hike here.
  • Vikingsholm : Tour an historic and magnificent Scandinavian castle near Emerald Bay.
  • Truckee Railroad Museum : A top stop for train-loving kiddos, this museum has an original caboose from the Southern Pacific Railroad and explores the rail history of the Sierra.

Lake Tahoe Hotels & Lodging: Where to Stay

The topic of lodging in Lake Tahoe is worthy of a post all its own which I’m sure I’ll get to eventually here on the blog. But in the meantime, here are the essentials you need to know as well as my top lodging picks!

Vacation Rentals

While the area certainly has many hotels and motels, many visitors to Tahoe opt for vacation rentals. Tahoe is a popular destination for families and bigger friend groups to travel together, and a house or condo means more space, room to cook, laundry and more, especially on longer vacations. Check out Tahoe vacation rentals on VRBO .

My personal favorite places to look for vacation rentals are in Kings Beach, Incline Village, and Tahoe City. Those areas are a little less expensive than the communities that directly orbit a major ski resort. Kings Beach is close enough to drive to either Northstar California or the Nevada ski resorts like Diamond Peak or Mount Rose. Incline Village is even closer to those Nevada ski resorts and is also well located for summer lake activities. And Tahoe City is not too far from Palisades or Homewood for winter activities and has lots of direct lake access in summer.

Lake Tahoe Hotels

If a hotel is more your speed, here are a couple of our family’s favorite places to stay in and around Lake Tahoe:

North Lake Tahoe Hotels

Ritz Carlton Lake Tahoe with snow

  • Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe : Located on the slopes of Northstar California Resort, this is the most luxurious hotel in the area and my top pick for ski-in, ski-out winter stays. See my Ritz Carlton-Lake Tahoe Hotel review here .
  • Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe (Incline Village, NV): Another full service higher end hotel close to skiing and directly on the lake for summer boating and beach time.
  • Hampton Inn & Suites Tahoe-Truckee (Truckee, CA): Just a short ride to either Truckee or Northstar California Resort, this moderately priced hotel can be a value option.

South Lake Tahoe Hotels

Marriott Grand Residence Club Lake Tahoe by Heavenly Gondola

  • Grand Residence Club by Marriott, Lake Tahoe : Prime location within walking distance of Heavenly’s gondola right in the heart of town and just a few blocks from the lake. Condo style accommodations with kitchens. We stayed there on our last trip to Heavenly and it worked exceptionally well for the price.
  • Marriott’s Timber Lodge : Right next to the Grand Residence Club with similar condo accommodations.

Tips & Tricks for First Time Visitors on Lake Tahoe Vacations

1. Book early – really early : Tahoe is a super popular destination year round, and peak weekends in both winter and summer book up fast. If you want your choice of lodging at a reasonable price, you really need to consider booking very early. For holidays during the ski season, I recommend up to a year in advance. But at the very least, consider booking before summer is up. Once the kids return to school in the fall, everyone really begins planning their ski vacations in earnest. The flip side is true for the summer season – definitely plan to book summer vacations in the dead of winter before everyone else’s minds turn to the changing season.

2. Respect the local community : While Lake Tahoe is a popular vacation getaway, so many travelers forget that there are real locals who live there year round. Respect the local community, their resources, and the lake. There is some real local resentment that has been building lately because of the behavior of travelers, perceived – rightfully or wrongfully – as entitled Silicon Valley tech bros… or worse. This resentment has grown especially since 2020 as the lake was overrun by tourists while so few travel destinations were open. Be part of the solution and not the problem. I promise you’ll have a much more authentic, relaxing, and rejuvenating Tahoe trip if you do. And that’s a win-win.

3. Plan for cell dead spots : Lake Tahoe’s cell and data coverage has improved a lot with each passing year. That said, there are still some pretty significant dead spots, including even on the drive along I-80! Input directions into your cell phone before you leave WiFi coverage. Pack an old fashioned map or guidebook. If your party plans to split up for hiking or skiing, have a set meeting place and time just in case someone can’t get calls or texts to go through.

What other questions do you have about Lake Tahoe? I’ll keep adding to this guide because we keep going back to Tahoe and discovering even more.

Hi! a couple girlfriends and I are going to be spending a 3 day weekend on the west side of Lake Tahoe at the end of Sept. Traveling from Oakland area. I am realizing this is sort of an "off" season as it isn't summer nor winter. We love to hike and are looking for a more "spiritual/healing" trip. Maybe doing some yoga during sunrise or sunset on a hike. Do you have suggestions for hiking trails on the west side that would give us a glorious sunrise or even sunset? Or a place that may hold a healing circle with sound bowls and such? Any other suggestions for that time of year?

Wednesday 20th of April 2022

Hi there! We are going on our honeymoon to Lake Tahoe in early August. I have found a lot of cool activities but am scared to book because I want to see what the weather is like. Since most activities are outside, I would be regretful booking things to find out that day was going to be rainy but also regretful if things fill up because I didn't book soon enough. Any tips on booking outdoor activities to get our spot but also not jumping the gun too soon? Thanks!

Things book up very quickly in summer in Tahoe due to crowds so I'd book earlier rather than later. There isn't a lot of rain in Tahoe in summer but most activity operators offer rain checks or refunds in case of bad weather.

Looking to make the most of your one day in Lake Tahoe?

Whether taking a day trip to Lake Tahoe from San Francisco or closer, you’ve landed in the right spot. I’ve crafted an action-packed one day itinerary for Lake Tahoe, highlighting the best things I experienced during my two getaways to this crazy clear lake.

The problem is Lake Tahoe is so different in the different seasons. Luckily for you, I went once in the summer on a California road trip and once in the winter for some New Year’s snowboarding. And I’ll have two itinerary versions for each season.

Let’s make the most of your limited time with an exciting day of activities, starting with a hike at Emerald State Park, water activities in South Lake Tahoe, and the best stops on a serene drive around the lake. Below that, I’ll also give you a rundown of the best winter activities in the area.

Sample One Day in Lake Tahoe Itinerary

So you have everything in one scroll, here is a summarized version on the summer and winter Lake Tahoe itineraries. Below, I will go into more detail about each activity.

Summer Day Trip to Lake Tahoe

A day trip in Lake Tahoe is enough time to drive around the whole lake and see the main highlights. But, I recommend sticking to the south and east sides of the lake so you have time for hiking and water activities.

  • Drive in from the south, as South Tahoe  will be where we spend most of the day.
  • If you haven’t had breakfast yet, head to the  Driftwood Cafe  in South Lake Tahoe for their fan-favorite pancakes.
  • In  Emerald Bay State Park,  stop at the  Emerald Bay  and  Vikingholm Castle.
  • Go on a  morning hike on the Eagle Falls Trail , a popular trail to a beautiful waterfall.
  • Grab a bite at  Freshies Restaurant & Bar  for a Hawaiian-inspired menu with fantastic lake views.
  • Rent a kayak or paddleboard, or go on a sailing trip  on top of the clear lake waters.
  • Start on the  scenic drive, hugging the east Lake Tahoe  coast up north.

Zephyr Cove

Cave rock beach.

  • Sand Harbor Beach
  • Clothing Optional:  Secret Cove Nude Beach

Recommended lodging options for the Night: South Lake Tahoe

  • Luxury: Edgewood Tahoe Resort
  • Mid-range: Marriott Grand Residence Club, Lake Tahoe
  • Budget: The Coachman Hotel

Feel free to mix and match based on your interest and pace. The tour covers a lot of ground, so don’t rush.

Winter Day Trip to Lake Tahoe

Most people who come in the wintertime do so for winter activities.

  • Alternative:  Go on a guided snowshoe tour.
  • Lunch:  I always love warming up in the ski lodges with some fries and chicken strips.
  • Alternative:  Snowtubing is also one of my favorite winter activities.
  • Relax at a Spa:  Treat yourself to a massage at The Landing Resort & Spa.

Quick Facts about Visiting Lake Tahoe

Did you know that Lake Tahoe is over two million years old and is considered one of the 20 oldest lakes in the world? It’s also the largest alpine lake in North America, and so deep – a whopping 1,644 feet – it could cover the Empire State Building!

Nowadays, Lake Tahoe is a playground that offers everything from thrilling water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding in the summer to adrenaline-pumping snow activities like skiing and snowboarding in the winter.

Its clear blue waters and the mountains surrounding it, combined with attractions such as Emerald Bay State Park and Heavenly Mountain Gondola, make it a popular destination for West Coastians especially.

Driving Around Lake Tahoe

Driving around Lake Tahoe is an adventure in itself! The entire loop is approximately 72 miles. It typically takes about 3 hours to complete without any stops.

But, with the views of the lake and the Sierra Nevada mountains, you’ll want to take your sweet time. That’s why I recommend starting at one end and working your way up only one side (the east side) if you are coming for a day.

What to Do in Lake Tahoe in One Day

Lake Tahoe truly transforms with the seasons. In summer, soak up the sun on its sandy beaches and go boating. In winter, the snowy wonderland invites you to strap on your skis and carve down its world-class slopes.

Below, I’ll go into more detail about the best things to do in Lake Tahoe, divided by its season and according to the itinerary crafted above.

Summer Lake Tahoe Itinerary

Morning: emerald bay state park.

Emerald Bay State Park is a must-visit in Lake Tahoe, especially in the summer. This park is home to some of the area’s most beautiful landscapes and hikes.

Start your day snapping a pic at the panoramic views of the bay from the scenic overlook on Highway 89. I’m sure your first sight of the emerald green waters of the bay will amaze you as much as it did for me.

Travel Tip!  There is a parking fee, and this place gets crowded in the summer.

Vikingholm Castle

Next, descend the trail to the shore, where you’ll find the historic Scandinavian-style mansion, Vikingholm Castle. Built in 1929, this 38-room mansion is one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the United States.

Originally built as a summer home, the castle is now a part of California’s state park system and is open to the public. You can reach the castle by a steep one-mile trail that descends about 500 feet from the parking area.

Then, you can take a castle tour or just wander around alone.

Travel Tip!  The castle is open for tours from late May through the end of September.

Eagle Falls Trail

Also within the park is the popular Eagle Falls Trail. This hiking trail is a fan-favorite and one of the best in all of Lake Tahoe. The path leads you to fantastic views of high-altitude lakes and waterfalls towards Eagle Lake.

Eagle Falls Trail is a relatively easy trail that takes about 2 hours to complete, covering a distance of about 2 miles round trip. After a few minutes, you’ll already have a great view of the lower falls and another amazing one of the Upper Falls at the end. You’ll have a complete panorama of Emerald Bay, Fannette Island, and Lake Tahoe in the distance.

Mid-Day: Lake Activities

After hiking, stop for lunch, then cool off with a refreshing swim. You can stay in Emerald State Park, South Lake Tahoe, or beyond.

Many activities can be done on or around the lake at many beaches. You can get your adrenaline flowing by renting a speedboat for the day or try out water skiing, wakeboarding, or tubing.

Here are a few of the best activities:

Sailing Cruise Around Lake Tahoe

There is no better way to take in the beauty of Lake Tahoe than aboard a sailboat. Many sailing cruises depart from various ports around the lake.

Depending on your pick, you’ll get to put your feet up and relax or participate in activities such as winetasting, stand-up paddleboarding, swimming, and more.

This sailing cruise on Lake Tahoe is a very popular choice in the area. You’ll go out onto the water for two hours on a 40-foot sailboat.

sunset on sailboat

Kayak or Paddleboarding

For those looking for a bit of activity on the water, head out in your own kayak or paddleboard. The Lake Tahoe coastline is dotted with many rental shops that offer hourly to full-day rentals. Paddle over to hidden beaches and secret coves.

Otherwise, you can take this guided kayak tour from Sand Harbor , where you’ll paddle in a completely transparent kayak.

Afternoon: East Lake Tahoe Scenic Drive

After an exciting day on the water, go for that scenic drive along the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe. Head out of South Lake Tahoe, taking Highway 50 towards Carson City.

Along this route, the road weaves through the mountains with numerous overlooks to stop at.

Zephyr Cove is renowned for its beautiful beach and another place with exciting water sports. The wide sandy beach is perfect for sunbathing or a stroll by the lake.

The Zephyr Cove Stables also has horseback rides that lead you through beautiful forest trails with amazing lake views.

Zephyr Cove Beach on a lake tahoe itinerary

A bit further along the road, you’ll find Cave Rock Beach, a massive cavernous rock formation extending into the lake. The rock itself is a spiritual and historic site for the local Washoe tribe and has a unique geology that dates back millions of years.

Cave Rock Beach itself is small but a beautiful sandy beach. It’s also a favorite spot for fishing. The short Cave Rock trail also starts in a small parking lot on the west side of Highway 50 just before you reach the tunnel.

This moderate hike is about 0.8 miles round trip and goes to one of the most accessible top-down views of Lake Tahoe and its shorelines.

Sand Harbor State Park

If you are following this route, Sand Harbor should be the last major stop on your drive. The park has gorgeous sandy beaches, rock formations that frame the shoreline, and turquoise waters. It’s definitely somewhere I would include in any Lake Tahoe itinerary.

Another highlight of the park is the Sand Point Nature Trail, a short, half-mile trail that takes about 30 minutes to finish.

You can find any and all water activities here. In the summer, the park hosts a Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. You can catch performances in an open-air theater overlooking the lake.

From here, if you are headed back towards West California, you can pop out on the north end and keep driving west. If not, you can retrace your steps back to South Lake Tahoe.

Winter Lake Tahoe Itinerary

Winter road conditions might be icy, so going all around the lake or up steep mountain passes can be a bit scary.

All Day: Ski and Snowboard at World-Class Resorts

Lake Tahoe is renowned as a hub for winter sports, hosting an array of world-class ski and snowboard resorts. These resorts cater to all skill levels, from beginner slopes to challenging black diamond runs.

Many resorts also have other activities like snow tubing and sleigh rides.

I’m a very big snowboarder and have been since I was 8 years old. Around Lake Tahoe, I went to Palisades Resort and Heavenly, some of my favorites in the country.

Travel Tip!  If you’re going many times a season, I recommend getting the Ikon or Epic Pass as this gives you access to multiple resorts in the area. Or, opt for single-day lift tickets.

Lake Tahoe is home to 15 ski resorts, which is just insane.  But the best would be Heavenly, Northstar, Palisades Tahoe (formerly Squaw Valley), and Kirkwood.

The complete list of resorts includes:

  • Alpine Meadows Ski Resort : Known for its diverse terrain and scenic views.
  • Boreal Mountain Resort : A family-friendly destination, Boreal is renowned for its night skiing.
  • Diamond Peak Ski Resort : Breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe.

  • Sugar Bowl Resort : One of the oldest ski resorts in California.
  • Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area : A great place for beginner skiers and snowboarders.

Heavenly Gondola and Heavenly Village at dusk in winter

Alternative Activity: Snoeshowing Lake Tahoe

If smashing your tailbone all day isn’t your thing, or you’re just looking for a change of pace, snowshoeing is another fun winter thing to do around Lake Tahoe.

Hands down, one of the best places to snowshoe is around the frozen Echo Lakes.  Mount Tallac Trail  is an excellent choice as a more challenging option that will take you to the top of Mount Tallac, the highest peak in the area.

If you have no experience (but are looking to), take this guided snowshoeing tour, which will provide equipment and lessons .

Ice Skating Lake Tahoe

On the list of delightful winter activities around Lake Tahoe, you can’t miss ice skating. I used to compete back in the day, so I always love showing off to my friends who have no clue about my past axel attempts (which, by the way, I never quite nailed).

Around the lake, several outdoor and indoor ice skating rinks cater to skaters of all levels and provide skate rentals.

Spas Around Tahoe

Rest those burnt-out thighs with a rejuvenating spa treatment. I love going for massages and a sauna after being cold all day, and Lake Tahoe has lots of top-quality spas and services.

Here are a few:

  • Spa at Squaw Creek
  • Stillwater Spa and Salon
  • The Landing Resort and Spa
  • Elements Spa

Places to Visit with More Time

Other places around lake tahoe.

  • Taylor Creek Visitor Center : A popular spot for nature walks and bird watching.
  • Truckee River : Go rafting, kayaking, and fishing.
  • Tahoe Rim Trail : A 165-mile trail that circles Lake Tahoe.
  • Kings Beach State Recreation Area : A popular place to swim and do watersports.
  • Tahoe City : A quaint town on the lake’s shore.
  • Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park : A vast park with hiking trails and lake overlooks.
  • Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park : A state park with miles of hiking trails, a historic mansion, and a beautiful beach.

Taylor Creek Nature Trails & Visitor Center

Day Trips from Lake Tahoe

  • Sacramento, California : The state’s capital has many attractions, including the historic Old Sacramento Waterfront, the California State Railroad Museum, and the State Capitol Museum.
  • Reno, Nevada : Known as “The Biggest Little City in the World”, Reno has a great arts scene and is home to the National Automobile Museum.
  • Sierra Hot Springs:  Drive down Highway 395 for crazy cool hot springs like Travertine and Wild Willy’s.
  • Virginia City, Nevada : A historic mining town to explore old saloons, visit the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, and try your luck panning for gold.
  • Yosemite National Park : Although it’s a longer drive, the beauty of Yosemite’s waterfalls, valleys, meadows, and giant sequoias is well worth the trip.
  • Napa Valley, California : World-renowned for its vineyards and wineries, go wine tasting and fine dining.
  • Monterey, California : Famous for its beautiful coastlines, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and historic Cannery Row.

Where to Stay in Lake Tahoe

I stayed in south Lake Tahoe because of how close it is to numerous ski resorts, beaches, and nightlife. I think this is the best place with the most amount of options. So that’s why below I’ve given a few top options based on different budgets.

In the north, Tahoe Vista is more laid-back and is close to several parks, beaches, and hiking trails. Northstar California Resort area is where the luxury experience is at.

Best Hotels in South Lake Tahoe

Is 1 day enough for lake tahoe.

More than one day is needed for Lake Tahoe, especially because you are likely driving in from a few hours away. The region is brimming with activities and attractions in all seasons, and many people vacation here for a week or even more.

A day can be enough if you want to do a highlights tour or go skiing or snowboarding at one of the acclaimed resorts. But with more days, I recommend driving the entire Lake Tahoe Look, going on more hikes, or checking out other activities.

Camp Richardson Resort Beach

Best Time To Visit

Lake Tahoe really is a year-round destination, so the best time to visit depends on what you want to do.

In summer (June-August), the weather is sunny and great for hiking, water sports, and beach days. However, this is the peak season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices.

In winter (December-February), Lake Tahoe transforms into a winter wonderland with plenty of snow for skiing and other snow activities. This is also a popular time to visit, especially around Christmas and New Year’s. It also gets crazy expensive.

How to Get There

Lake Tahoe is situated near several major cities. If you’re flying, the nearest significant airports are Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) in Nevada, approximately an hour away, and Sacramento International Airport (SMF) in California, about two hours away.

Many people go on a day trip to Lake Tahoe from San Francisco or Sacramento through beautiful landscapes.

I don’t recommend public transportation, but several shuttle services operate from the airports to the Lake Tahoe region. Tahoe Truckee Area Regional Transit ( TART ) provides service throughout North Lake Tahoe, and Tahoe Transportation District ( TTD ) covers the south.

Final Thoughts: One Day in Lake Tahoe

Whether you’re coming in the summer or winter, come prepared to enjoy the great outdoors. Since I’ve been in both seasons, I can’t even make a final judgement into which I liked better since it was so different. The focus was so much more on the lake in summer, while in winter, it was on the mountain.

And if you have time constraints at Lake Tahoe because you’re seeing other destinations in California, continue to our next article.

A Day Trip to Lake Tahoe from Reno

December 4, 2021

A Day Trip to Lake Tahoe from Reno

If you happen to be in the Reno Nevada area, then a day trip to Lake Tahoe is a must. Within a short drive you will find some amazing scenic routes, views over Lake Tahoe, and some great places to stop for lunch.

While staying a little longer in Lake Tahoe or the Carson Valley area is a great idea, here is my guide on how to visit Lake Tahoe from Reno for the day.

Payton at Lake Tahoe

Getting to Lake Tahoe from Reno

The drive to Lake Tahoe from Reno is only 38miles, which takes about 45-50 minutes along the 550 and 431 highways. The easiest way to reach Lake Tahoe is by car, as you can then also drive some of the scenic byways around the lake.

However, there are a number of shuttles to the area , including the year-round North Lake Tahoe Express. You could then combine the shuttle with a guided tour of Lake Tahoe to see a lot in a short time.

View out over Lake Tahoe

Things to do in north Lake Tahoe on a day trip

Driving the 75 mile loop around Lake Tahoe takes a little over 2 hours if you drive it straight. But there is so much to discover, we suggest you add in some hiking, scenic look-outs and eating along the way…

There are lots of hikes around Lake Tahoe, for all levels of fitness. For day-trippers, I would recommend the sub-30-minute hike to some beautiful spots; perfect for short trips, and maximum impact for minimal effort. Here are some of our favorite spots:

  • Historic Stateline Fire Lookout – This is a steep but relatively easy paved hike up to the State Line lookout. It’s about 20-30 minutes to reach the top, depending on your fitness level.
  • Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park –

Payton hiking at Lake Tahoe

Scenic Overlooks

Here are some of the best scenic overlooks in Lake Tahoe.

  • The Lake Tahoe Scenic Overlook , Mt Rose Hwy, Incline Village, NV – THE best view over the whole of Lake Tahoe. On a clear day you can see all the way over to the Sierra Nevada mountains in the south of Lake Tahoe.
  • Emerald Bay State Park Lookout , 1805102, South Lake Tahoe, CA – With a spectacular view out over Fannette Island, the Emerald Bay lookout showcases the bays and coves of southern Lake Tahoe.
  • Cave Rock , 1430 US-50, Glenbrook, NV – Cave Rock is on the east side of Lake Tahoe, above Zephyr Cove on the Nevada side. It’s a great spot from which to watch the sunset.

Lake Tahoe Beaches

If action and adventure isn’t your thing, why not relax at one of the many beaches.

North – Kings Beach State Recreation Area is a great all-round beach. There’s is kayak and stand-up paddle board hire nearby, picnic tables and a pier.

South – Pope Beach is one of the best in the southern area of Lake Tahoe.

East – Sand Harbor Beach on the Nevada side is a family favorite. While the sand is still pebbly, the clear waters and conveniences nearby make it a popular lake beach option.

West – Sugar Pine Point Beach is a haven on the west coast. A rocky beach with a pier, it’s great for exploration rather than sunbathing.

Lake Tahoe is stunning. As a travel writer, I’ve traveled extensively over the last ten years, and I have yet to find a mountain destination anywhere in the world that has everything Lake Tahoe has to offer while also being so strikingly beautiful.

Located on the California-Nevada border, northeast of Sacramento, Lake Tahoe is a popular destination for adventure lovers, families and anyone wanting to reconnect with nature in the great outdoors.

Known for its crystal blue water, beautiful beaches, excellent hiking and world class ski resorts, Lake Tahoe attracts over 2.7 million visitors annually and has been consistently ranked in the top five best places to visit in California, top five best adventure vacations in the U.S.A., and it was rated “America’s best lake” by USA Today.

I lived in North Lake Tahoe for a winter season during college and taught skiing and snowboarding at Northstar Resort, and recently I remodeled a vacation home in Carnelian Bay.

From my experience being somewhat of a local, I put together this Lake Tahoe guide to help you make the most of your visit to this incredible destination!

Where To Stay In Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe offers an array of cute cabins and luxury vacation homes  on both the north and south shore.

I personally prefer to stay on the north shore in Carnelian Bay or Tahoe City when I visit Lake Tahoe. This area is gorgeous and I love being close to the lake while also having access to all the great restaurants in this area.

As I mentioned, I also recently purchased and remodeled a cabin in this area with beautiful lake views – @LakeTahoeCabin . We took this entire 1970s cabin down to the studs and reimagined it with high-end finishings, appliances and decor. All the bedrooms are en-suite and offer sweeping lake views.

The location of our cabin is ideal, walking distance to the lake, a short drive to public beaches, Northstar Resort, Palisades Tahoe Resort, golfing, and close to an array of excellent restaurants. My Lake Tahoe Cabin is the perfect luxury vacation rental for your next family or group getaway to North Lake Tahoe!

  • Location:  Carnelian Bay
  • Sleeps: 10+ guests
  • Size: 4 bedrooms + a loft / 5 beds / 4.5 bath
  • Price: Lake Tahoe Cabin

I also put together this list of the 20 Best AirBnBs in Lake Tahoe so you can quickly and easily look through the best rental options for large and small groups on the north shore and the south shore!

North Lake Tahoe Versus South Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is one big, beautiful lake, but it is often referred to by its two different regions – North Lake Tahoe and South Lake Tahoe.

Both regions are beautiful and have many similarities as far as having great rental options , access to the lake, beautiful beaches and world class ski resorts. But North Lake Tahoe and South Lake Tahoe are also very different.

North Lake Tahoe aka Tahoe North

North Lake Tahoe is the quieter side of the lake and is arguably the most beautiful region.

North Lake Tahoe is made up of small cities and cute mountain towns including: Incline Village; Sunnyside/Tahoe City; Kings Beach; Carnelian Bay; Crystal Bay; Tahoe Vista; and Truckee, and there is world class skiing here at Squaw Valley, Northstar and other north shore resorts.

Truckee has a population of just over 16,000 people and is located about 12 miles north of the lake. Truckee  used to be a mining town and still exudes old school rustic charm and a slow paced lifestyle. In fact all of North Lake Tahoe embraces a low paced, relaxed vibe so much so that locals here often refer to it as “Tahoe Time.”

North Lake Tahoe is more pristine, less crowded and feels more connected to nature compared to South Lake Tahoe. But the south shore also has some unique pluses to offer.

South Lake Tahoe aka Tahoe South

South Lake Tahoe is basically the Las Vegas of Lake Tahoe. South Lake Tahoe is on the Nevada side so if you like to gamble this is the region you should stay in as there are an array of casinos to be found here along with a bustling nightlife!

The south shore of Lake Tahoe includes South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Stateline, Zephyr Cove, Glenbrook, Emerald Bay, and the Markleeville and Kirkwood areas. South Lake Tahoe is the largest city around Lake Tahoe with a permanent resident population of just over 21,000 people.

There is world class skiing on the south shore at Heavenly Resort along with an array of great restaurants, bars, and shops. If you prefer to have all the amenities of a big city during your mountain vacation, then South Lake Tahoe is for you.

How To Get To Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is an ideal destination because it is easily accessible by car from everywhere in California. Tahoe is just a 3.5 hour drive from San Francisco and 7.5 hour drive from Los Angeles.

If you opt to fly you can fly into the nearby Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) and rent a car at the airport. From the Reno Airport it is an easy 45 minute drive to Truckee, a 50 minute drive to Incline Village, a 1 hour drive to Tahoe City and a 1 hour drive to Carnelian Bay.

Almost anywhere in North Lake Tahoe can be reached by car from the Reno Airport in an hour or less, and you can drive to South Lake Tahoe from the airport in about 1 hour 25 minutes.

Ubers are also available from Reno Airport up to Lake Tahoe but they are pretty pricey. If you book an Uber be prepared to pay around $120 for a standard UberX or around $200 for an Uber Black.

Things To Do In Lake Tahoe

There is so much to do and see in Lake Tahoe! These are some of the top activities in North Lake Tahoe and South Lake Tahoe that will keep you busy during your stay here. You can also check out my guide, 30 Things To Do In Lake Tahoe , for an extensive list of Tahoe activities.

  • Hiking – There is great hiking all around Lake Tahoe. If you’re looking for a moderately easy hike in North Lake Tahoe try  Tahoe Rim Trail to Picnic Rock Viewpoint  which takes about 45 minutes and offers incredible views at the top! Check out All Trails for a list of the best hikes in South Lake Tahoe and the best hikes in North Lake Tahoe .
  • Biking – In the summer months there is world class mountain biking at many of the ski resorts, and there are also bike paths that run along the lake, so you can enjoy biking through the mountains or around the lake with your family.
  • Ice Skating & Rollerblading – The Village at Northstar Resort has an outdoor rink that is used for ice skating in the winter and rollerblading in the summer. This is a great place to let your kids play while you enjoy cocktails rink side.
  • Boating – I highly suggest renting a boat and spending a fun day out on the water exploring Lake Tahoe’s beautiful coves and beaches.
  • Water Skiing & Wakeboarding – Lake Tahoe is an excellent lake to water ski or wakeboard or inner tube! You can book a private customizable water sports excursion  to enjoy a fun-filled day on the lake.
  • Beach Day – If you don’t rent a boat but still want to be on the water you can drive to one of the many public beaches and enjoy a fun beach day lakeside. In the summer months parking can be hard to find at the public beaches so go early.
  • Kayaking & Paddleboarding – Kayaking and paddleboarding are both great ways to get out on the water, explore the lake and get some exercise.  You can book a private kayaking or paddleboarding tour.
  • Swimming – Lake Tahoe’s average surface temperature in the summer is 63°F, and can drop to 53°F just 18 inches below the surface. For young children who will likely want to spend hours splashing in the lake I suggest bringing a wetsuit. They might not need it but it’s nice to have just in case.
  • Happy Hour Cruise – Enjoy a relaxed experience on the lake by taking a happy hour cruise .
  • Emerald Bay State Park – This inlet along the southwest shore of Lake Tahoe is known for its colorful granite cliffs and stunning panoramas. Carved millions of years ago by passing glaciers,  Emerald Bay State Park is a must-see. To avoid the crowds and parking hassle, I suggest booking a private Emerald Bay boat tour .
  • Donner Memorial State Park & Museum – This park offers hiking, camping, fishing, boating, the Emigrant Trail Museum & a historic monument.
  • Float The Truckee River – In the summer months you can float the Truckee Rivers! Start in Tahoe City at Truckee River Raft Co. and end at River Ranch Restaurant & Lodge . The company takes the rafts from you at the end and returns them while you take a shuttle back to the point of origin. To save money, you can also just buy individual inner tubes at the gas station across the street from the raft rental places, but then you also have to make sure you have 2 cars; leave one car at the end point and one at the starting point. It’s about a 3 hour raft ride, slow and mellow.
  • Art Walks & Art Tours – In the summer months there are art walks and art tours in North Lake Tahoe and South Lake Tahoe. These events are being updated constantly so do a quick internet search to find art events in the area you are staying.
  • Gambling – There are lots of spot to go gambling in Lake Tahoe. If you want to stay where you can gamble try Border House at Crystal Bay Casino on the north shore or  Bally’s Lake Tahoe Casino and Resort on the south shore.
  • Golfing – There are an array of great golf course courses in Lake Tahoe including  Incline Village Championship Course  in North Lake Tahoe and Edgewood Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe. Here’s a list of the top 10 golf courses in Lake Tahoe .
  • Miniature Golf – There are several miniature golf courses in Lake Tahoe. We golfed at Magic Carpet Miniature Golf Course in Carnelian Bay which was very fun! There is also a miniature golf course in Kings Beach and a Magic Carpet Miniature Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe.

When Should I Visit Lake Tahoe?

One of the best things about Lake Tahoe is that it is a great destination to visit year-round!

In the summer months of June, July and August the temperature is usually in the mid to upper 70s Fahrenheit making these months an ideal time to spend your summer getaway on the lake.

In the winter months of December, January, February and March the average temperature is around 45 degrees Fahrenheit. From mid-December to mid-March there is typically excellent snow coverage making this an ideal time to go on a ski trip to Lake Tahoe.

Summer and Winter are high seasons in Lake Tahoe so if you want to avoid the crowds and get better prices on Tahoe vacation homes I suggest visiting during a late spring or early fall.

In May the weather is usually in the mid 60s Fahrenheit, and in September (my favorite month in Tahoe!) the weather is typically still in the mid 70s Fahrenheit so you get to enjoy warm “summer” days without the crowds!

Lake Tahoe Ultimate Guide Wrap Up

I hope my Lake Tahoe Guide has inspired you to visit this amazing destination. It’s truly a very special, one-of-a-kind destination that should be on your bucket list.

Lake Tahoe itself is one of the most beautiful, sparkling blue lakes you will ever see in the United States. And as of June 2023, the lake is also the clearest it has been in over 40 years! Apparently, the lake is even more pristine this year than usual because of tiny zooplankton that eat up particles that can make the water cloudy.

So if you’re thinking of booking a Lake Tahoe trip, now is a great time to do it. Happy travels!

US-395 going past Mono Lake in California with the Sierra Nevada mountains in the background as seen from Conway Summit.

Road Trip From Las Vegas To Lake Tahoe

If you live in Las Vegas and want to escape the Nevada heat for the cooler climes of a pristine lake surrounded by mountains, Lake Tahoe on the border with California is the perfect place and the route there is a whole experience in itself.

The 480-mile road trip from Las Vegas to Lake Tahoe takes 8 hours of driving through the Death Valley and along US-395. Explore Sierra Nevada along the way in Yosemite National Park, Mammoth Lakes and Inyo and Stanislaus National Forests.

With inhospitable deserts, otherworldly rocky terrain, redwood groves, snow-capped mountains and even ski resorts all along the way, this might just be the best road trip route from Vegas.

How far is Lake Tahoe from Las Vegas and how long will the road trip take?

The route from Las Vegas to Lake Tahoe covers about 480 miles, which equates to about 8 hours of driving, before adding on stops and breaks.

You can feasibly take off right around breakfast time and make it to Lake Tahoe in time for a late-afternoon or evening dip, but you will sit in the car for the whole day and see nothing on the way.

Google and your GPS system will tell you that you should drive up US-95 instead which will cut your journey by 30 miles and save 45 minutes, but you will miss out on all the amazing nature and sights along the way so feel free to completely ignore that route.

With so much to see on the way, you can easily spend a week or longer driving one-way so however much time you have on your hands for the road trip, there will be more than enough to occupy your time.

Footprints along the crest of a sand dune at sunrise in the Death Valley National Park, California.

There are also some pragmatic issues with trying to power through this route. For starters, if you're interested in checking out the ever-so-scorching Death Valley (which, for the record, you absolutely should), chances are you'll be too tired by the time you've reached Bishop or Mammoth Lakes to even think about driving.

Another thing worth keeping in mind is that, once you make it to California, you'll be driving along the Sierra Nevada up the US-395 highway to Lake Tahoe.

Seeing as the weather and road conditions on the high-altitude roads can be unpredictable, you may or may not end up going a bit slower than you might have hoped.

Best road trip route from Las Vegas to Lake Tahoe

By far the best way to get from Las Vegas to Lake Tahoe is to follow the Sierra Nevada range north. You'll mostly just be following a single highway once you cross over to California, making the drive both scenic and straightforward.

Whether you're flying into Las Vegas, or you simply don't have your own transport in the city, renting a car for your road trip is something you'll want to take care of ASAP.

For an easy-to-compare view of rental options for your road trip from Las Vegas to Lake Tahoe, take a look at our partner site, RentalCars.com .

Road trip route from Las Vegas to Lake Tahoe

First, head north from Las Vegas along U.S. Route 95, following it past Red Rock Canyon. At Amargoza Valley, take Highway 373 towards Death Valley Junction. This will take you right into the heart of Death Valley and into California.

There is a lot to explore in Death Valley but after seeing the sights, Route 190 will cut right across the desert and past some of the best sights before reaching US-395 in the foothills of the Sequoia National Park.

From there, the road will head north through Bishop with the stunning Sierra Nevada mountains to your left. Make sure you check out Mammoth Lakes before cutting through Inyo National Forest and Mono Lake.

If time is on your side, you can make detours through Yosemite National Park or Stanislaus and Eldorado National Forests on your way up to Lake Tahoe.

For most destinations around Lake Tahoe, you'll want to follow Route 207 towards the lake - South Lake Tahoe and Heavenly ski resorts are right on the border between California and Nevada and you can loop around the west part of the lake along Route 89 for some scenic views.

Best places to stop between Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe

Stopping between Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe is practically mandatory, considering the varied road conditions and abundance of places worth checking out. In a vast sea of tourist traps along this route, these are genuinely some of the best places to stay:

Enjoy the royal treatment in Death Valley

If you're truly set on exploring everything in as much detail as possible, Death Valley is bound to eat up a day or two of your time before you can move on towards Lake Tahoe. By any conceivable metric, the best resort in the entire park is the Inn at Death Valley .

If you've ever wanted to know what a celebrity vacation is like, look no further than this amazing resort. Featuring everything from a gigantic garden area and an outdoor swimming pool with a fireplace to an all-American restaurant and fitness center, you'll find it hard to say goodbye to the Inn.

Chances are you'll be quite sore after a tiring hike in the heat, so the on-site sauna is a great place to spend the evening. If you have a surplus of energy, you can try your hand at golfing or cycling in the immediate area – there truly is something for everyone here.

As you might expect from a hotel that Oscar winners have frequented, the stay isn't cheap, but it's also not overpriced to the point where it feels too exclusive. In fact, it could probably get away with costing much more, considering you'll be waited on hand and foot for the duration of your stay.

Experience the very best of Lake Tahoe

After long hours of exploring the lakeside and mountains of Lake Tahoe, you'll want a luxurious place to lay your head for the night. One of the very best hotels around Lake Tahoe is the luxurious Edgewood Tahoe Resort .

With its spacious, colorful lobby and beautifully decorated rooms that come with a terrace and fireplace, this resort is the most elegant you can hope to find near Lake Tahoe by a wide margin.

You don't have to stay in your room to unwind here, though – you can enjoy a massage at the spa center or get a workout in at the fitness center.

You wouldn't think that a large swimming pool right by a lake would be so great, but it really is – you can marvel at Lake Tahoe and the beautiful mountain backdrop from the comfort of the pool, then dry off at the outdoor fireplace.

For those visiting during the chilly season, you'll also have access to an amazing hot tub.

With so much to see near South Lake Tahoe, the hotel shuttle is handy if you don't want to bother with parking or want to have a drink when you're out.

All these things, in conjunction with the private beach and amazing location, are more than enough to justify the relatively high price of the hotel.

Things to see on a road trip from Las Vegas to Lake Tahoe

With a bit of an adventurer's spirit and one or two weeks to spare, you can turn this road trip into one of the most scenic of your life. Every landmark along the way offers countless hours of scenic exploration – these are the places you should definitely check out:

  • Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area – visible from the Las Vegas Strip, this area is a testament to the often-underappreciated beauty of the desert. You might need to make a reservation for a timed-entry slot, so check the official website before traveling.
  • Death Valley – although it's best avoided in the summer, the badlands and sand dunes are a must-see for spring or fall travelers
  • Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest – this forest is home to the Methuselah Grove, which features one of the oldest trees known to man
  • Bishop – located not too far from Death Valley, this city is one of the major stopovers in the Inyo County area
  • Manzanar – this concentration camp held thousands of Japanese-American prisoners in WWII and is a must-see for history buffs
  • Inyo National Forest – home to both the tallest peaks in the area and some of the oldest trees in the world, this is truly a forest of extremes
  • Mammoth Lakes – if you're visiting Lake Tahoe in or near wintertime, you have the opportunity to see this beautiful town in its snowy prime
  • Mono Lake – this saltwater lake is an incredibly important cog in a complicated ecosystem involving various water bird species
  • Yosemite National Park – beautiful no matter the season, this park features valleys, rock formations, and skiing spots for an amazing year-round experience
  • Bodie State Historic Park – this gold-mining-town-turned-ghost-town makes for an interesting visit, as it has hardly been retouched at all since its abandonment
  • Stanislaus National Forest – featuring the Stanislaus River and a whole slew of others, this is a great spot for recreational activities like kayaking
  • Eldorado National Forest – this beautiful forest is a popular camping spot, due in no small part to its wide variety of gorgeous flora
  • Emerald Bay State Park – this beautiful park is known for the Vikingsholm mansion, as well as for housing Lake Tahoe's only island
  • Carson City – the capital of Nevada technically extends all the way to Lake Tahoe, giving you an urban setting for your lakeside trip if you want it

Best time to go on a road trip from Las Vegas to Lake Tahoe

The best thing about going on a road trip from Las Vega to Lake Tahoe is that it is amazing no matter what time of year you go although there's some important things to note if you're driving in the middle of the summer or winter.

Lake Tahoe is not particularly known for having long or hot summers – in fact, the peak temperatures in July are below 80 degrees, and the water averages a somewhat chilly 65, with quite a rapid decrease in temperature as you dive deeper in.

Besides the water, though, the area thrives in terms of natural landmarks – you'll have a wide array of hiking trails to check out throughout most of the year, and the thick layers of winter snow make Tahoe's Squaw Valley one of the most popular ski resorts in the States.

When it comes to stops along the route, exploring Death Valley in the summer can range anywhere between unpleasant and unbearable. Seeing as this is one of the most scenic parts of the trip, you'll definitely want to find a sweet spot when the temperatures are more hospitable - spring and late fall are by far the best times to go.

Also, it's very difficult to just pass by Yosemite National Park without at least a brief visit. The problem is that Tioga Pass will be inaccessible between November and May, so doing the trip this time of year comes with a huge trade-off.

Although it remains largely open throughout the year, US-395 itself can and does get hit by snowstorms so make sure your car is well prepared and you bring plenty of warm clothes with you.

Taking everything into consideration, going in the fall, especially around late September, might be the best time for this trip. Death Valley should be quite pleasant by its standards, Tioga Pass is guaranteed to be open, and all the hiking trails around Lake Tahoe will still be accessible.

5 Amazing Stops On The Scenic Route From Reno To Lake Tahoe

Are you looking for a scenic and relaxing drive to take in the incredible natural beauty of Lake Tahoe? If so, consider taking the Lake Loop route from Reno around Lake Tahoe, visiting Carson City and Virginia City. The route is breathtakingly beautiful. You’ll see incredible scenery, take in some history, and enjoy some lovely small towns that are great places to stop and explore.

Another couple joined my husband and me during the first 4 days in Carson City, and then two other couples joined us during our time in North Lake Tahoe. We visited during the month of August. It was warm but not terribly hot. Late spring into early fall would be great times to visit unless you are into snow sports and want to ski.

Most people who travel between Reno and Lake Tahoe tend to stick to the interstate, which is understandable given its convenience. However, taking the scenic Tahoe Loop is worth considering if you’re looking for something different. It is a fun road trip you won’t regret.

Visit Carson City and their partners hosted our four-day visit and activities in Carson City and surrounding areas. All opinions are my own.

Public art in Reno

Reno is like a mini Las Vegas. There are casinos, and gambling is available everywhere, including the airport. But there is so much more to this town. Reno offers much, from outdoor adventure to art to award-winning restaurants.

The Riverwalk along the Truckee River is beautiful. There are several eateries along the walk with tables overlooking the water, and we enjoyed just walking along the river. You can find boutique shopping and world-class entertainment along the Riverwalk district. Plus, they have a fun award-winning white water park.

One of the most popular and fun monthly events the 50+ traveler might enjoy in Reno is the monthly Wine Walk held every third Saturday of the month throughout the year. The walk is held along the Truckee River and on neighboring streets, and proceeds benefit local charities.

After a day in Reno, head south for a short 25-minute drive to Carson City.

Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City

2. Carson City

Carson City was our home base for most of our adventures in the area. It is the capital city with lots to see and do.

Downtown Carson City is walkable, with stops at the Capital Grounds, the Battle Born Memorial, several antique shops and bookstores, museums, and restaurants.

We enjoyed touring the Capital Building and Battle Born Hall inside the Nevada State Capitol Building when we visited. The public is welcome to tour two floors of the capital building, which was built in 1871.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum is full of memorabilia, locomotives, and other equipment that will take you back in time to when the railroad was the king of transportation. You can enjoy a historical train ride experience aboard the Virginia and Truckee Railway from Carson City to Virginia City.

Railbikes in Carson City

A new railway experience is the Carson Canyon Railbike Tours . We were fortunate to be able to take this fun 2-hour tour.

The Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum and the Nevada State Museum are two other museums of interest.

During our visit, we hit the Kit Carson Trail , a self-guided walking tour with 48 stops, and each was identified with a marker. An audio tour is available to provide information about what you see as you walk through Carson City’s West Side Historic District. The landmarks included churches, museums, and Victorian-style homes that told a story of the town’s rich history.

Several excellent hikes include Carson River Park and Ash Canyon Creek Trail . You can also hike to the Kings Canyon Waterfall .

Carson City also boasts hot springs, water adventures, an up-and-coming food scene, and numerous annual events.

A great place to stay when you are in Carson City, Nevada, is the Staybridge Suites . It is easy to get to and within close driving distance of everything. The rooms are lovely, and the staff is friendly and helpful. We especially enjoyed the free laundry area to wash clothes for the next leg of our trip. The outdoor space and pool were lovely, with lots of room to relax and enjoy the view. We had a two-bedroom suite with a full kitchen and living area. It was perfect for two couples traveling together.

Pro Tip: If walking downtown or taking the Kit Carson Trail or other hikes, be sure to stay hydrated and hike early in the day. The heat later in the day is intense.

A train on the Virginia and Truckee Railway in Virginia City

3. Virginia City

While Carson City was our home base, we took a day to drive to Virginia City to take in the Old West action there. Virginia City is a 20-minute drive from Carson City on a very curvy and winding road that increases in elevation as you go.

You can ride the Virginia and Truckee Railway up the mountain on days the train is running.

We had planned to ride the train but found out a few days before our visit that the train was not running while we were in town.

Wild horses along the road between Carson City to Virginia City

Wild horses were out along the road when we left Carson City to drive up the mountain. They are native to the area and often even walk into town.

Spending a day in Virginia City is like being in a place where the hands of time stopped a hundred years ago. Millions of dollars from mining proceeds made Virginia City a boomtown back in the day. Today it is a tourist destination like no other.

Instead of sidewalks, there are boardwalks along the main street of town. Virginia City is home to unique museums, paranormal tours, train and trolley rides, historic churches, mining tours and exhibits, numerous shops, over a dozen eateries, some Old West hotels (no modern hotels with swimming pools and game rooms here), and a Wild West comedy show.

Old-fashioned candy store in Virginia City

We visited many shops and purchased some old-fashioned candy and other items.

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad offers 35-minute round-trip rides from Virginia City to Gold Hill. The conductor narrates the history of how the town was once the wealthiest city on earth, how the railroad was built, where the mines were located, and more. The conductor had lots of information and obviously loved his job. We loved this ride.

Next time we visit, we want to do the Chollar Mine Tour . It takes you underground into a mine to see how miners in the Gold Rush times extracted the wealth Virginia City is famous for.

After our time in Virginia City, we drove further up the mountain to Geiger Lookout , which provided a scenic view of Reno and the surrounding area. The hotel manager suggested it in Carson City, and the view was worth the few extra miles.

Our 4 days in Carson City went by so fast that we could have easily spent an entire week there. But we were off to meet two other couples joining us in North Lake Tahoe.

We continued taking the scenic Lake Loop route and headed around the south end of Lake Tahoe.

Emerald Bay on Lake Tahoe

4. South Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe sits on the Nevada and California border in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The water is crystal clear, and the scenery gorgeous and majestic. The largest alpine lake in North America is stunningly beautiful.

South Lake Tahoe is more commercialized than the other areas around the lake. The largest town around the lake, it has the largest variety of shopping and dining options. You will also find casinos, concerts, and festivals in South Lake Tahoe.

Along the lake’s southern end, you will find one of the world’s most beautiful and photographed locations, Emerald Bay . Known for the crystal clear blue waters and huge dramatic cliffs, visitors can park and enjoy picnicking, swimming, and hiking.

Emerald Bay also boasts one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the area, Eagle Falls.

The roof of Vikingsholm

Once you hike down to the lake, you can stop at the visitors center and tour Tahoe’s hidden castle, the Vikingsholm Castle . Built in 1929, it is a replica of a Viking-era castle.

Palisades Tahoe, 1960 Olympics location

5. North Lake Tahoe

We met two other couples and spent the remainder of our time in North Lake Tahoe.

We stayed at the rustic River Ranch Lodge , which was on the banks of the Truckee River. The lodge also has a restaurant and counter service lunch on a huge patio overlooking the river.

There are miles of paved bike trails along the river. Both pedal and electric rental bikes are available.

We spent an afternoon horseback riding with Alpine Meadows Stables . The horses were well-trained and carried us along the rugged paths with ease.

We spent one day at Palisades Tahoe , where the 1960 Olympics were held. It is the largest ski resort in Lake Tahoe and has enjoyable year-round activities. We rode the aerial tram to the top of the mountain and enjoyed the breathtaking views. There is also an Olympic Museum, a skating and hockey rink, restaurants, and hiking.

Tahoe City is a charming town and home to the only outlet for Lake Tahoe. The water is released into the Truckee River. River rafting is a popular activity in the area. Tahoe City boasts numerous dining options, boutique shops, museums, and a beach area.

One of the highlights of our time in North Lake Tahoe was a dinner cruise on the lake.

Pro Tip: The area is also frequently visited by bears, so don’t leave food in your car.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable road trip experience, take the Tahoe Loop from Reno to Lake Tahoe. The drive will take you through some of Nevada’s most picturesque scenery, including Emerald Bay and Carson City. Make a stop in Virginia City to explore its Wild West history, then continue to beautiful Lake Tahoe. No matter what time of year you go, the views are sure to amaze.

Plus, having a car gives you the flexibility to venture off the beaten path and discover hidden gems that may not be easily accessible by public transportation.

Before renting a car, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the local driving regulations and weather conditions. Lake Tahoe experiences snowy winters, so if you’re visiting during that time, make sure to choose a car equipped with winter tires or chains for optimal safety. Additionally, be aware of parking regulations in the area to avoid any unnecessary fines or inconveniences.

“Road warriors who drive along the Free-Range Highway are encouraged to pull over and explore art installations, ghost towns, famed hotels and more on this scenic road trip,” Tracie Barnthouse, public relations specialist for Travel Nevada says.

The first stop is Beatty, Nev. , once a thriving gold mining town in the early 1900s and now considered the “Gateway to Death Valley”. Here, visit the nearby ghost town of Rhyolite, the Beatty Museum and some preserved fossil remains dating back hundreds of millions of years.

Beatty Nevada

A few minutes away off Route 374 is the Goldwell Open Air Museum, the first art highway highlight outside of Vegas. Its ghostly plaster sculptures, 24-foot miner and other surreal pieces break up the landscape en route from Las Vegas to Lake Tahoe.

Vegas to Lake Tahoe Step Two:

Some professional ghost hunters have dubbed Goldfield, Nev. one of the most haunted places in the country. Stopping in this former mining hub, once the largest town in the state, you can get a hefty dose of heebeejeebees and history.

International Car Forest Last Church Nevada

Need another break from driving? Stop in Tonopah, Nev ., just over three hours from Las Vegas.

While here, don’t be alarmed if you see any odd lights or objects in the sky—the Extraterrestrial Highway, aka State Route 375, is just to the east.

Grab a drink and unwind at either the Tonopah Brewing Company or Tonopah Liquor Company.

Then, get a room at the renovated Mizpah Hotel, a treasure trove of regional history in itself, or the pooch-friendly Clown Motel, where a flamboyant circus of thousands of static clowns awaits you in the lobby.

You’re almost there. You can almost smell the crisp mountain air.

Walker Lake

About 1.5 hours from Tonopah is scenic Walker Lake, a great place to stretch your legs during your trip from Las Vegas to Lake Tahoe. How to Get to (and Around) Lake Tahoe

trips to lake tahoe nevada

Planning a trip to Lake Tahoe? Get prepared to be awed by the region’s natural beauty no matter what time of year you’re visiting. Though it’s an extremely popular tourist destination, Tahoe is still somewhat rural, so you’ll need to do a bit of planning to make sure you’ve got your transportation needs covered. Depending on where you’re staying, you will likely need a car, and winter road conditions can affect your ability to move around the area.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the idea of driving in snow or commuting between Tahoe’s towns, don’t worry. Most hotels know that transportation in the area is complicated and are usually happy to help you arrange anything you need, including airport rides and assistance with ski shuttles.

Here’s a quick guide to getting around Lake Tahoe during your trip to the outdoor paradise.

Getting to Lake Tahoe

By Plane: Whether you’re going to the town of South Lake Tahoe or any of the towns on the north shore of the lake, you’ve got two options for airports: Reno-Tahoe International Airport (which is 30 minutes east of North Lake Tahoe), and Sacramento International Airport (which is about 90 minutes west of both the North and South Shores). Although the Reno airport is closer to Lake Tahoe, it is important to keep in mind that it has fewer direct flights. If you’re flying from western cities like Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Denver, or Seattle, there's a good chance you'll be able to find a direct flight to Reno. Otherwise, you’ll likely have to make a transfer. Reno does not have any shuttle services to North Lake Tahoe, but there is one that runs to South Lake . If you fly into Reno on a ski trip, save your boarding pass because a few ski resorts will give you a free lift ticket that same day.

If you’re flying from further away, you may be better served by flying directly into Sacramento. Winter travelers should be aware that driving from Sacramento to South or North Lake Tahoe may be restricted in the winter.

By car: If you’re staying in South Lake Tahoe (or Stateline, which is what the town is called on the Nevada side,) you can probably get around without a car. There are plenty of taxis and ride shares, and many bars and restaurants are within walking distance of hotels. If you're on the North Shore, you’ll almost certainly need your own vehicle. Public transportation exists—but it’s not a thorough or quick system, and it doesn’t run late into the night.

To drive to the North Shore from San Francisco, take Highway 80 the entire way. It takes about three and a half hours to get to Truckee, and from there, you can get to most of the other towns in the North Shore in about 25 minutes. If you’re leaving from Sacramento, Highway 80 is also the quickest route.

To get to South Lake Tahoe from Sacramento, take Highway 50 east. It takes roughly two hours without traffic. If you’re coming from San Francisco, take Highway 80 to Sacramento before heading east on Highway 50.

Rental cars can be easily arranged at both the Sacramento and Reno airports. The rental car terminal at the Reno airport is directly across from baggage claim, making rental pickup a very quick process.

Getting Around Lake Tahoe

Public Transit:  Public transportation is available in South Lake Tahoe/Stateline and the North Shore, although it's more extensive in the former. In South Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe Transportation System operates a bus route that runs from Julie Lane in California to Herbig Park in Nevada. The bus starts picking up passengers at 5:50 a.m. and makes its last stop at 8:28 p.m.

On the North Shore, visitors will want to take the Tahoe Area Regional Transit, more commonly known as TART. The bus route goes from Soda Springs (west of Tahoe) to Incline Village in Nevada and Homewood on the west shore of the lake. The system can be very convenient for some locations, especially during periods of heavy traffic, but it can also take quite a long time to commute if you need to switch buses. Check the route and map in advance.

Shuttles : Nearly every major ski resort provides a free shuttle to and from the slopes. Considering traffic can be quite bad in the winter, it’s a great idea to take them whenever possible. Shuttles are offered from Northstar California Resort, Heavenly Mountain Resort, Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows , Diamond Peak , and Homewood Ski Resort.

Traffic: Most of Tahoe’s roads are windy, two-lane roads, and traffic can be bad on weekends or whenever it’s snowing (the drive from San Francisco can take eight hours or more if it's a holiday weekend). Midweek travel is always advised, though most roads have significant traffic every day in July and August. Give yourself extra time to get anywhere.

Winter Driving Consideration: Tahoe gets incredible amounts of snow every year and many roads are subject to chain control, which occurs whenever conditions are extremely icy and snowy. Chain control is completely dependent on weather; It could last for days, or for just an hour or two. To pass the chain control inspection point, you’ll need chains on your tires or a four-wheel drive vehicle with snow-rated tires. Make sure to rent a car with those features if you’re arriving in winter. Driving in the snow is exceptionally slow and can be dangerous, so if you’re uncomfortable with the idea, keep an eye on the weather forecast and head out of town earlier or later if need be. Note that the roads around Emerald Bay on Tahoe’s southwest side are often closed for weeks at a time due to avalanche danger. Use the Caltrans website to check on road restrictions.

A road trip from foothills to the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe

(FOX40.COM) — Any time outside of winter, when the roads are more accessible and the vegetation has a little more color, is a good time to explore from the foothills to the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe.

Not to say that wintertime is not a good time to visit, but the weather and road conditions allow for more daylight and more ability to move around on foot and by vehicle.

A good route to explore and learn about the area will start you off in historic Auburn, continue onto Nevada City, up the grade to Truckee, along Lake Tahoe to Meyers, back down to Placerville and finish where you started, in Auburn.

It’s a route that could be done in a day, but it’s better to take it over several days, exploring the historic communities and breathtaking natural scenery.

Auburn to Nevada City

Besides being the capital of Placer County, Auburn is a gold rush town in the lower part of the foothills, sitting alongside Interstate 80, a short drive from the Sacramento metro area.

While only a relatively small amount of gold was found in Auburn it would become a supply hub between Sacramento and the gold fields further into the foothills.

Today, Old Town Auburn has numerous restaurants and shops inside historic buildings. Perched at the top of Lincoln Way is the Historic Auburn Courthouse.

Taking CA-49 north towards Grass Valley and Nevada City you will see a mix of commercial areas, wineries, forestland and remote retail areas.

After a 40-minute drive, you will end up in the city of Grass Valley, which is home to Empire Mine State Historic Park, where more than 5.8 million ounces of gold were pulled out of the ground between 1853 and 1956.

A few minutes more on the 49 gets you to Nevada City, with its iconic Broad Street and its countless historic Old West buildings.

Strolling along the streets of downtown Nevada City, one will find more modern brick buildings mixed in with Victorian-era timber buildings and homes.

Not far from the city center there are walking trails at Hirschman’s Pond and the Nisenan Tribute Site.

Nevada City to Truckee

Getting back onto CA-49 north, it will become SR-20 and begin turning east towards Interstate 80 towards Truckee. This section of the drive is about an hour and 20 minutes.

Before even getting on Interstate 80, though, there are some beautiful views along the mainly two-lane SR-20.

About 20 minutes out from Nevada City, a vista point parking lot will be seen along the westbound side of the state route. This provides a look over the forest surrounding Jefferson Creek.

Another five minutes along the roadway will bring drivers to a large scenic overlook of the Omega Diggins, the site of a large hydraulic mining site.

There is a short trail down to a lower observation deck that provides a better overlook and diagram of the Diggins.

Before joining I-80 at Yuba Pass, detour onto Bowman Lake Road and visit the Sierra Discovery Trail for a short loop trail along raised walking platforms that take you into the surrounding forests and include a small waterfall.

From Yuba Pass, drivers will follow I-80 east to Truckee for about 30 miles, which usually takes about 40 minutes.

A popular alternate route is exiting the main interstate and taking Donner Pass Road along Historic US 40, along Donner Lake to the Donner Memorial State Park.

This is a great spot to recreate in the lake or walk along its beautiful shores. Getting back onto Interstate 80 it is only another seven minutes to Truckee.

Truckee to Meyers

Taking SR-89 south, it is a little over one hour drive from Truckee to Meyers with the roadway following the western coast of Lake Tahoe.

Some notable stops along the way include Tahoe City, Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park and Vikingsholm.

This area has beautiful views of Lake Tahoe, smaller surrounding lakes, campgrounds, hiking trails and ski resorts.

Meyers to Placerville

Although this stretch takes you back to the main highway of US 50, it is one of the most breathtaking portions as you make your way down from the Sierra toward the foothills.

About 30 miles of the 52-mile stretch takes drivers along a two-lane highway through pine forests, steep granite rock walls and mighty rivers.

This area is notable for its hiking trails and recreation areas like Echo Lake, Pyramid Creek Trailhead, Lovers Leap and Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort.

For those on this roadway at night, a stop at Ice House Reservoir might be good as it is one of the best places in the area to see the night sky.

From US 50, it is about a 10-minute drive up Ice House Road to the Ice House Observation Point 1.

Another popular recreation area along this section of US-50 is the Sly Park Recreation Area where many people camp, boat, hike and swim. Sly Park is located about 10 minutes from Pollock Pines.

Finally arriving in Placerville, the capitol of El Dorado County, you will find a downtown that still holds its Old West charm with a few mid-century buildings mixed in.

The city is the gateway to the famous Apple Hill region with its dozens of family-owned apple orchards, wineries, bakeries and other local businesses.

If you want to dive into some gold rush history, Gold Bug Park and Mine , located about 4 minutes from downtown Placerville, is a special experience.

Placerville to Auburn

The final stretch of the journey has drivers rejoin CA-49 North for about 26.5 miles and towards one of the most historically significant places in California history.

The first nine miles will take you through rural El Dorado County as you pass various orchards, farmlands and open fields. There are several wineries along this stretch of the roadway.

As you complete the first nine miles you will be transported to the 1850s as you find yourself in the historic town of Coloma and the Marshall Gold Discovery Site State Park.

CA-49 cuts straight through the town that brought millions of people from around the world to the West after gold was discovered there.

Although the population has dwindled in the last 174 years since then, there is still an operating blacksmith’s shop and a café, The Argonaut, that serves more than tasty coffee and cakes.

At the peak of the park is the James Marshall Monument, a larger-than-life-size recreation of the man who discovered gold in John Sutter’s Wood Mill just a few hundred feet below the monument.

You can hike Monument Trail or drive up what is claimed to be California’s shortest highway, California SR-153, to the top of the hill.

Beyond being an area full or California’s golden history, this is also a popular spot for kayakers and rafters to put their vessels into the South Fork of the American River, as it boasts some of the best whitewater rapids in the state.

Once you’ve finished taking in the history and natural beauty of Coloma, it is back onto CA-49 North towards Auburn.

If there is still a need to take in more of the natural beauty of the Northern California countryside, stopping at Dave Moore Nature Area, Magnolia Ranch or Cronan Ranch Regional Trails Park is a must-do.

The Bureau of Land Management owns and maintains these properties and it is free to park and hike.

Cronan Ranch is about 6.3 miles from Coloma and the furthest of the trails from the town.

If there is no longer a desire for hiking, it is an 18.1-mile drive back to downtown Auburn to finish this exciting road trip.

However, before completing this journey, there is one more place to stop at that you don’t need to go too far to appreciate, the Auburn State Recreation Area.

You will notice that after leaving the small community of Cool, you’re heading back downhill and into a very wide and tall canyon.

As you pass Cool and Cave Quarry, you’ll pass through some switchbacks and come upon a large green bridge as you make the final large bend.

The Foresthill Bridge, California’s tallest bridge, towers over the confluence of the North and Middle forks of the American River as the clear water makes its way into Folsom Lake.

This is one of the largest state recreation areas in the Sacramento region, spanning from Auburn to Colfax along the North Fork of the American River.

There are countless hiking trails, including the Western States Trail that runs for 100 miles from Olympic Valley to Auburn.

Even if you don’t hit the trails it is still a great place to pause and take in the natural beauty.

NATURAL RESOURCES/CLIMATE

Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park is abundant and diverse in natural resources,  from high alpine mountain peaks (Snow Valley Peak, Marlette Peak) to lush meadows (Spooner Meadow), majestic forest stands to ribbons of aspen groves, sub alpine and alpine lakes, to the prominent granitic rock outcrops and sandy beaches of Lake Tahoe’s spectacular shoreline. This varied environment supports the dynamic processes that shape the habitat for a rich spectrum of vegetation, wildlife, and fisheries within the park. ( READ MORE )

HISTORY OF VAN SICKLE – Established in 1988

As a memorial to his late grandfather Henry Van Sickle, Jack Van Sickle donated 542 acres of his land to the State of Nevada in 1988 to create a new Nevada State Park. Subsequently, the State of California purchased the adjacent land, the Van Sickle family’s former Crescent V Ranch, to connect the park to the community of South Lake Tahoe.

The ranch’s barn, a circa-1914 log cabin and housekeeping cabins from the 1930s-era Three Pines Motel, were all relocated to their current location in 1960. The Van Sickle family operated the Stateline Stables on the site until 1993 with up to 60 horses taking riders on trails throughout the area, creating unforgettable memories for many of Tahoe’s vacationers. Opened to the public in the summer of 2011, the park is managed by the Nevada Division of State Parks in partnership with the California Tahoe Conservancy.

It may be Spring, but no one told Lake Tahoe: Record-breaking snowstorm coats mountains

Late season snowfall breaks historical record for the month of may while also bringing the largest 24-hour total this year.

trips to lake tahoe nevada

People were digging out from a record-breaking snowstorm in Northern California this weekend, which is something they don't normally do in May. The snow that accumulated from 8 a.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Sunday was the largest 24-hour period of snowfall for this water year, said Andrew Schwartz, lead scientist and manager at the  Central Sierra Snow Laboratory , a University of California, Berkeley field research station located at Donner Pass in California's Sierra Nevada mountains.

Water years are measured from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30. The spring storm brought a whopping 26.4 inches of snow to the Lab.

The Tahoe snowfall also broke 24-hour records for May

While this year is nowhere near the record snowfall seen last water year, this weekend broke records for the month of May. The 26.4 inches seen over the weekend surpassed any other snowstorm on record at the lab, which goes back to 1971. "We regularly receive snowfall at the Snow Lab in May but the accumulation amount for this storm is what made it unique. This storm produced the largest single-day accumulation in May in our digitized records," Schwartz said.

Here's how this water year – stacks up against record-breaking 2022-2023 and the median:

2023-2024 Tahoe snowfall slightly above average so far

Aside from a record-breaking weekend, the 2023-2024 season has been normal. "This year was remarkably average, which is something that we rarely get in the Sierra Nevada," said Schwartz.

While the 2023-2024 season isn't officially over, here are this year's snowfall totals, compared with previous water year data from the Snow Lab:

The popular ski resort Palisades in nearby Olympic Valley also confirmed receiving 26 inches in a post to X , formerly Twitter. The resort plans to remain open through Memorial Day.

"We did end up slightly above average for our total snowfall and snow water equivalent, so it has been a good year overall," said Schwartz.

Golden State Warriors

Golden state warriors | steph curry won’t defend tahoe golf title due to olympic commitment, the 36-year-old will be participating in the paris olympics, the first of his career.

STATELINE, NEVADA - JULY 14: Stephen Curry of the NBA Golden State Warriors hits the tee on the 7th hole on Day One of the 2023 American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course on July 14, 2023 in Stateline, Nevada. (Photo by Isaiah Vazquez/Getty Images)

Curry announced in a statement on Tuesday afternoon that he will not participate in the 2024 American Century Championship, a celebrity golf tournament in mid-July, passing up the opportunity at back-to-back titles in the pursuit of international athletic achievement.

“I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to defend my title at the American Century Championship in Tahoe this summer, but the chance to represent my country and, hopefully, win an Olympic gold medal for the first time at the 2024 Games in Paris is an opportunity that I simply could not pass up,” Curry said in a statement. “I look forward to returning to the shores of Lake Tahoe and creating more memories next July and in subsequent years. In the interim, I know that Dell and Seth will represent the Curry family well in my absence, but if one of them doesn’t come home with another trophy for our mantel, I will be highly disappointed!”

Curry had no shortage of brilliant moments en route to winning the 2023 championship, the highlight being a 152-yard hole-in-one . He became the first African American champion in the tournament’s 35-year history, as well as the first active athlete to win since the Tennessee Titans’ Al Del Greco in 2000.

“Well, we’ve discovered that the only thing Stephen Curry can’t do is be in two places at once,” said Jon Miller, NBC Sports’ President of Acquisitions and Partnerships, in a statement, wishing Curry and Team USA success in Paris and hinting at a Curry return for the 2025 tournament.

Following a Wednesday practice round and the Thursday Celebrity-Am, the tournament will take place from July 12-14 and feature 84 athletes and entertainers, a list that includes Seth and Dell Curry, Jerry Rice, Steve Young and Charles Woodson, among others.

Curry has three gold medals on his resumé from the 2014 FIBA Men’s World Cup, 2010 FIBA Men’s World Championship and 2007 Global Games, as well as a silver medal from the 2007 FIBA Men’s U19 World Championship, but this summer will mark the first time that the 36-year-old will participated in the Olympics. In addition to Curry, James and Durant, Team USA, coached by Steve Kerr, will feature Joel Embiid, Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, Jayson Tatum, Devin Booker, Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Haliburton, Bam Adebayo and Jrue Holiday.
