26 Stress-Free Packing Tips for Travel

Updated : June 24, 2024

AAA Travel Editor, Patricia Miller

Table of contents, pre-packing preparation, packing strategies and space savers, special considerations, additional travel tips for packing , pack for your dream trip with aaa travel.

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the thought of packing for a trip? We've created this comprehensive guide to simplify the process and alleviate any travel prep stress.

Whether you're exploring a top travel US destination or venturing abroad, these packing tips for travel are designed to help you easily conquer your packing to-do

list. Read on to discover hacks for maximizing space and travel essentials you never knew you needed.

Before you dive headfirst into packing, a little preparation can go a long way in saving you time and stress. Here are some tips to keep your packing process organized.

1. Start Planning Early

trip you up synonym

First and foremost, give yourself plenty of time to pack. It’s a good idea to start planning 2-3 weeks ahead of time. Whenever you think of something you’ll need, jot it down or make a list on an app. Even better, leave your suitcase where you can see it and throw things into it during the weeks leading up to your trip.

2. Research the Destination

trip you up synonym

Before diving into packing, especially for international travel , take a deep breath and research your destination. Understanding the climate, culture and any local restrictions will be your packing compass.

Will there be cool evenings that require a light jacket? Is it the rainy season, necessitating an umbrella? Knowing these things beforehand can help you avoid overpacking unnecessary items or feeling out of place.

It's important for women traveling alone to research cultural or legal dress codes in their destination country. For example, when traveling to Italy, consider bringing a shawl to cover your shoulders when visiting churches. With a little research, your suitcase will reflect your destination and not just your wardrobe.

3. Choose Your Luggage

trip you up synonym

Choosing the right luggage is key to a smooth packing experience. Think about the length of your trip and your mode of transportation. Weekend getaways may just need a carry-on, while longer adventures may require a checkable bag.

Consider a travel pack for hands-free travel or a suitcase with maneuverable wheels for navigating airports and uneven terrain. Opt for a well-made, lightweight option that prioritizes durability and ease of movement.

4. Create a Travel Checklist

trip you up synonym

Creating a travel checklist streamlines your packing process, ensuring you don't miss anything essential. Start by planning outfits for each day of your trip, considering your itinerary and weather conditions.

This not only ensures you pack everything you need but also helps avoid overpacking similar items. With a checklist in hand, you've conquered packing anxiety and are ready to explore!

H3: 5. Place Necessities in Carry-on

trip you up synonym

Stow necessities in your carry-on. This may seem too obvious, but medicine, expensive tech equipment, jewelry and essential toiletries are things you don’t want to lose and should keep close at hand.

In the unfortunate case that your luggage is lost or delayed, having your essential items will ensure you can get by on your trip until your situation is resolved. Consider also packing a change of clothes so you have a clean outfit to wear while you wait for your bag to arrive.

Your research and prep work are done! Now that those empty suitcases are staring you down, let's explore some space-saving packing strategies to keep everything efficient and organized.

6. Utilize Packing Cubes

trip you up synonym

Invest in a set of packing cubes to keep items separated. This will make finding things in your luggage, like your first pajamas for unwinding at the hotel, a breeze. The packing cubes keep your neatly folded or rolled clothes from wrinkling.

7. Embrace Rolling Your Clothes

trip you up synonym

Speaking of rolling clothes, many travelers firmly believe it’s the best way to keep your garments crease-free. Here's how to do it:

  • Lay your clothing piece flat and smooth out any wrinkles.
  • Fold a small section of the piece at the bottom inward.
  • Start tightly rolling from the bottom to the top. Use a tie or soft ribbon to secure the piece from unrolling.

This is a great space-saving technique that allows you to fit more into your bag.

8. Pack Versatile Clothing

trip you up synonym

Packing multiple outfits with your clothing pieces minimizes what you need to bring. Plan on wearing versatile neutrals like beige, navy and black, which mix and match well, allowing you to create multiple looks with a few key pieces.

For a pop of color, a scarf or jewelry does the trick nicely without taking up valuable luggage space. And remember, dark colors don't show spills as much as light colors do. Along with neutral colors, items that are classic cuts, like button-down shirts or a maxi dress that can transform from day to night, are ideal.

9. Lean on the Power of Layers

trip you up synonym

Packing versatile pieces that you can layer allows you to conquer a wider range of activities and temperatures. Consider bringing lightweight tank tops or tees, which you can easily warm up with a cardigan or sweater.

A fluffy scarf can be used for both chilly evenings and as a cozy airplane blanket during your flight. By layering, you pack less while maximizing your outfit options.

10. Consider Laundry Options

trip you up synonym

Researching laundry options at your destination allows you to pack lighter. Check if your accommodation has in-unit laundry or if there are laundromats nearby. Pack a travel-sized detergent or invest in convenient detergent sheets for handwashing in your sink.

Prioritize quick-drying fabrics and versatile pieces that mix and match, creating multiple outfits. By planning for on-the-go laundry, you can pack fewer clothes and avoid overpacking.

11. Stay Connected With Chargers

trip you up synonym

Pack an extra phone charger and a portable power bank. It’s easy and fun to take photos for Instagram with your smartphone, but you can wear your battery down quicker than you may realize. And trying to find an outlet in a public place to charge your phone when your battery is at 4 percent power is almost impossible.

A portable power bank can give your phone a much-needed boost to keep you capturing your adventures throughout the day. Just remember to charge the power bank before you head out the door!

12. Pack Light on Toiletries

trip you up synonym

Bring travel sizes of grooming items like toothpaste, shampoo and deodorant, or fill up little empties with your favorite brand to save valuable space in your suitcase. To prevent leaks during transport, be sure to pack your travel tubes in a sealable plastic bag. Consider using solid toiletries like shampoo and conditioner bars to maximize space and minimize spills.

13. Separate Your Shoes From Clothes

trip you up synonym

Put shoes in thin plastic bags like a grocery bag or dry cleaning bag to keep them from touching your clean clothes. Pack footwear and other heavy things at the bottom of your suitcase to keep your clothes from wrinkling. This also helps distribute the weight evenly, making your suitcase easier to move.

14. Keep Your Clothes Smelling Fresh

trip you up synonym

For an extra touch of freshness, tuck a fabric softener sheet into your suitcase. While it won't necessarily remove wrinkles, it can help minimize mild odors and leave your clothes smelling pleasant when you unpack. Avoid using too many sheets, as the scent can overwhelm a confined space.

15. Maximize Dead Space

trip you up synonym

The key to packing like a pro lies in maximizing space. This means conquering every nook and cranny of your suitcase. Start by stuffing socks, underwear and other small items into shoes to fill their empty space.

Take advantage of rolled-up scarves, smaller tank tops or even rolled clothes to fill in those hard-to-reach areas. Remember, every bit of space you save means more room for those trip souvenirs!

16. Try the 5-4-3-2-1 Packing Method

trip you up synonym

Struggling with overpacking? The 5-4-3-2-1 method can help! This simple rule ensures you safe space by only packing what you need:

  • Four bottoms
  • Three accessories
  • One swimsuit

For maximum outfit creation potential, stick to a similar color palette for your clothing. This allows for easy mixing and matching throughout your trip

17. Wear Bulkier Clothes on the Plane

trip you up synonym

Airplane cabins can get chilly, especially if the air conditioning is blasting. To fight the cold and free up space in your suitcase, consider wearing your bulkier clothes onto the plane. This could include a sweater, a heavier jacket or bigger boots.

This method will keep you comfortable during your flight, but also allow you to pack lighter. Remember to choose clothing items that are easy to layer and remove as temperatures change during your journey to your destination.

Not every trip is the same? When it comes to how to pack for a trip, there are special considerations to tackle, from navigating airline restrictions to conquering diverse climates.

18. Pack for Your Itinerary

trip you up synonym

When booking your trip, you probably have a good idea of the activities you'll enjoy during your stay. Translate that itinerary into your suitcase! Long days of sightseeing call for comfortable walking shoes and versatile layers that adapt to changing temperatures.

Prioritizing poolside relaxation? Pack breezy clothes and a couple of swimsuits. Don't forget any special events or excursions—a dressier outfit for a fancy dinner or adventure-ready gear for planned hikes will ensure you're prepared. Planning outfits around your itinerary will help you feel comfortable and confident throughout your trip—and ready to tackle anything that comes your way.

19. Consider Packing Essentials for Young Children

trip you up synonym

Traveling with young children requires extra planning, from transportation to packing. While your itinerary is the most important, prioritize packing essentials to keep your little’s content and comfortable. Pack familiar items, like their favorite stuffed animal or blanket, for when they need to relax or take a nap.

Remember special medications, extra pairs of clothes for accidental messes and clothing layers for the plane. Pack plenty of healthy, high-protein snacks and nutritious food bars to keep your little ones happy and fueled throughout the journey. These essential travel survival tools will help create a smoother travel experience for your family.

20. Bring Home With You

trip you up synonym

Throw in some scented soap to add a touch of familiarity to your bath routine. Use a favorite scent to make you feel more at home and relaxed at the end of a long day of exploring your destination. Know your bathroom will have a tub? Consider packing a bath bomb to add another layer of relaxation to your bathtub routine.

21. Prepare for Bad Weather

trip you up synonym

Be prepared for bad weather and pack proper gear. Even sunnier forecasts can shift quickly, so layering with breathable layers is a smart idea. If you find yourself in a sudden thunderstorm, you’ll be glad you brought a mini umbrella, a light raincoat and a cheap plastic rain poncho.

22. Bring an Empty Water Bottle

trip you up synonym

Stash an empty water bottle in your carry-on to fill at water fountains. This way, you won’t have to throw away unfinished bottled drinks as you go through the TSA security screening line or wait for the flight attendant to bring you a beverage.

Using a reusable bottle is both eco-friendly and can also save you money on overpriced bottles of water you find in airport shops.

23. Remember To Pack for Your Service Animal

trip you up synonym

Just like you, your furry friend will need essentials while traveling. Pack food, medication and waste disposal bags to last the trip duration, and include extra in case of any delays.

Don’t forget their favorite couple of toys and a copy of their service certification, in case it’s requested. By planning ahead, you and your service animal can enjoy a smooth and stress-free adventure.

Below are some final travel packing tips to consider for a perfectly polished packing job.

24. Weigh Your Bag

trip you up synonym

Skip the baggage fee surprise! Before your trip, weigh your luggage at home with a handy luggage scale. Knowing your bag's weight beforehand allows you to strategically redistribute items or maximize your carry-on allowance if needed. Remember, airlines have strict weight limits. A little pre-departure planning can save you money, frustration and a last-minute scramble at the airport.

25. Protect Your Valuables

trip you up synonym

There are a few ways you can actively protect your valuables, even after you hand over your checked bag at the airport:

  • Utilize TSA-approved locks: If you must pack valuables in your checked bag, invest in a TSA-approved lock. These allow security checks while keeping your belongings secure.
  • Carry-on essentials: Keep important documents, medications and a small amount of cash in your carry-on for easy access and peace of mind in case of checked luggage delays.
  • Consider a Pacsafe: These travel bags feature slash-resistant materials and unique locking mechanisms, offering an extra layer of security in crowded areas like airports or busy cities.
  • AirTag or Tile your luggage: adding an AirTag or a Tile to your luggage can add peace of mind if the unfortunate situation occurs in which your suitcase is lost.

By following these tips, you can travel with confidence and know your valuables are protected.

26. Complete a Final Bag Check

trip you up synonym

Once you’re fully packed and weighed your luggage, take a few minutes to ensure a smooth departure. Run through your travel checklist to confirm all items are accounted for.

Review your planned outfits, making sure you've packed everything you need. Finally, pack any comfort essentials for your plane ride, like a travel neck pillow, earplugs or a good book. With a quick final check, you can confidently head to the airport, ready for a stress-free start to your adventure.

Both parties have decided: In the 2024 election, 'fear' is the word | Mitch Albom

trip you up synonym

My old friend Warren Zevon once wrote a song called “ You’re a Whole Different Person When You’re Scared .” Most of us are. And it seems that both of our political parties have decided that’s how they’ll win the upcoming presidential election.

Forget inflation, the border, abortion, schools, or international affairs. Fear is now the playbook for both Democrats and Republicans.

And, yes, I said both. This is not a partisan column. It’s a frustrated one. Because the Dems and the GOP have chosen the same awful game:

Scare the hell out of you.

Because it works.

Take Donald Trump and the GOP campaign. What’s the real message behind Make America Great Again ? If you don’t, it’s going to be horrible. Our country “ is going to hell ” Trump has said, many times over. The economy. The border. The nation’s morality. And without a Trump victory, he claims, we have a great deal to be afraid of.

The U.S. Department of Justice, for one. Trump, convicted in one trial and facing three more , has warned that what’s happening to him can happen to you. It WILL happen to you. The government will come after you for every time you disagree with it. That’s frightening, no?

Trump claims that if President Joe Biden wins, we will be overrun with illegal immigrants , the majority of whom will commit crimes, often violent crimes, like the ones that allegedly claimed the lives of Laken Riley and Rachel Morin .

If Biden wins, Trump claims, our schools will be overrun by transgender story hours , the death of girls’ sports, and a crazy, unfair obsession with diversity, equity and inclusion . We will lose our kids. We will lose our way.

Worst of all, the Trump camp warns, if Biden is reelected, he will quickly abdicate the position — or die in office — and we will be stuck with years of … President Kamala Harris.

Are you quivering yet?

More Mitch: Michigan Central Station celebrates not just Detroit's future, but its present

Trump the Hun

The Democrats, who decry Trump as “fearmongering” are no better themselves. Their entire campaign is based on fear. They have turned Trump into Hitler, Hannibal Lecter and Attila the Hun.

Trump, according to the Biden campaign, is a “ spiraling and unhinged man who will do anything for power, revenge, and retribution .” If he somehow got elected, here’s just a few things you need to be afraid of:

  • Retribution. Just as Trump warned that a Biden justice department would come after you, so does the Biden camp warn about Trump. He’ll target his enemies, they predicted. It will be a four-year revenge tour. Liberal TV commentators are afraid they’ll be targeted, as if Trump’s first order of business as president would be to put Rachel Maddow in jail.
  • Should Trump return to the White House, Biden’s camp cautions, he promised to be “ a dictator on Day One ” (Trump’s aides said he was joking.) Immigrants will be in the crosshairs. Abortion will be outlawed . Minorities will go backward.
  • A billboard in Philadelphia , where Trump was scheduled to speak this weekend, shouts that "If Trump wins, Black families lose," because he will " sabotage Obamacare , (pass) tax breaks for the rich, and slash Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid."

Scared yet?

Heck, the New York Times recently ran a column “If Trump Wins” that foretells of a “a radical reshaping of American government if he regains the White House.” The writers list, as if they’ve come from the future to warn us, a step by step prediction of Trump’s plans “for  cracking down on immigration ,  directing the Justice Department to prosecute his adversaries ,  increasing presidential power ,  upending America’s economic policies ,  retreating militarily from Europe  and  unilaterally deploying troops to Democratic-run cities .”

My Lord. Who on earth would vote for such horror?

Mitch Albom: Public discourse by lawmakers is now a notch above food fight

They're predicting a dark future. Don't believe them.

Both parties, it seems, have seen the future, and it is dark and terrifying. They warn of a national Armageddon. Which is why Americans seem so depressed about this election. You don’t inspire people with fear.

But you can control them.

Look no further than the recent COVID-19 pandemic, which witnessed some awful behaviors , with Americans turning on one another in shameful ways . People reporting their neighbors . Shutting down religious services. Shaming those who didn’t wear a mask outdoors.

In hindsight, we look kind of foolish. And our government looks needlessly authoritarian. Standing 6 feet apart wasn’t a fact-based policy. Shuttering nursery schools was overkill.

But it worked, didn’t it? Because fear works. Fear sells. If you’ve ever wondered why, during ratings sweeps months, you suddenly see local TV news investigations into dangerous germs or predatory babysitters, it’s because fear gets eyeballs. Fear makes us pay attention. And in a nation of 336 million distracted citizens, getting people to pay attention is how you win an election.

It doesn’t make it right. Or moral. Or admirable. As we get closer to Nov. 5, and you hear the candidates’ ads, you should ask yourself, first and foremost, “Are they trying to scare me into voting for them?”

The answer will be yes more than no. So remember the lyrics to Zevon’s song:

In the Kingdom of Fear

Dangerous creeps are everywhere

You're a whole different person

When you're scared

Don’t vote in fear. Don’t decide while petrified. The fact is, by Election Day, we will have already lived through four years of Trump and Biden. So no matter what the doomsayers predict, we have a plenty of experience from which to make up our own minds.

Don’t let these candidates court your alter ego, the one you become when you’re afraid. Do your own homework. Talk to lots of people. Then make up your own mind, rationally and calmly.

Let the politicians be scared of that.

Do You Have Food Allergies? Here’s How to Travel Safely.

Airlines, restaurants and hotels are all making travel easier for people with sensitivities to foods like peanuts, wheat and milk, but it’s still critical to be your own advocate.

An illustration shows a woman walking down a path wearing a big sun hat and pulling a suitcase. The path leads through stalks of wheat, a herd of cows and trees bearing fruit.

By Lisa McCarty

For the 33 million Americans managing any of the most common nine food allergies — including milk, eggs, nuts, wheat, soy, sesame and different types of fish — traveling safely can be challenging, but it’s becoming easier.

In the air, where carriers say they can’t guarantee fully nut-free flights, the recently enacted Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act will, over the next two years, add epinephrine injectors on planes and provide additional medical training for crew members.

On the ground, hotels and restaurants are also customizing meals, providing menus with allergen symbols, enhancing staff education and instituting better processes for food handling.

But still, it’s critical to speak up for yourself. As a person who is gluten-intolerant and a parent of a child with a serious peanut allergy, I’ve learned simple and effective ways to eat safely and reduce the risk of a reaction while away from home.

Pack to protect yourself

Consider packing allergy-friendly snacks for your trips. Some of the reliable brands without peanuts, tree nuts, gluten and dairy are MadeGood, Goodie Girl , Enjoy Life and Simple Mills . These portable products include snack chips and granola bars . For travel within the United States you can also store fresh fruit in resealable bags with reusable mini-ice packs, which are permitted in carry-on luggage, but the ice packs must be placed with other liquids when you’re passing through security.

If you travel with an epinephrine injector, insert a tracker like an Apple AirTag or Tile in its case and place it in your carry-on. Then, set an alert to notify you if you forget it at home or misplace it during your travels, so you will never be without it. The Transportation Security Administration limits passengers to two injectors, which should be kept in the original box with a visible prescription label.

The Food and Drug Administration also suggests packing cleansing wipes. Unlike hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes can remove up to 99 percent of allergens, including peanut residue , from surfaces. This can help protect you from cross-contamination. Be sure to wash your hands afterward to avoid direct contact.

Tell your hotel what you need

The Americans With Disabilities Act helps to protect those with food allergies by giving them the right to ask for necessary changes in hotel policies or conditions that place them at a disadvantage. However, hotels and rental properties can’t always guarantee allergy-conscious accommodations. When booking, prioritize establishments rated highly by other travelers with dietary sensitivities in online tools like the Spokin app and blog. The service allows you to search allergy-specific reviews of hotels and restaurants. Walt Disney Resorts, Hilton, Marriott, Fairmont, Kimpton and the Four Seasons are a few highly rated global hotel chains . Additionally, all Kimpton Hotels around the world offer a Forgot It? We’ve Got It program, in which they stock nonallergenic toiletries and snacks.

Most hotel booking apps allow you to limit your search to rooms with a kitchen, should you prefer to have the control that comes with preparing your own meals. If you can’t book a room with a kitchen, you may be able to ask the front desk for a microwave and a mini-fridge to store and reheat your own meals. When you book, personalize your profile with details of your dietary sensitivity and confirm with managers upon arrival. Be sure to ask them to also make their staff aware.

Airbnb and Vrbo properties typically come with a full kitchen, but remember to wash cookware and service items with hot soapy water before use to reduce the risk of contamination.

Fly allergy-friendly skies

The Air Carrier Access Act , like the A.D.A., protects airline passengers with dietary sensitivities by permitting early boarding for travelers to clean the seats and other surfaces. Although many airlines do not currently serve peanuts, a common allergen, there is no guarantee that onboard snacks do not contain traces of peanuts, which could set off a reaction. Some flights have designated areas called buffer zones, where peanut products are not served or eaten by passengers. Contact the airline before booking to learn about the specifics of your flight.

At the airport, Spokin can help locate nearby suitable meal options in 80 countries. You can filter by your specific dietary restriction and view thousands of user reviews for each establishment. The FindMeGlutenFree app searches worldwide airports for celiac-friendly options.

Talk to the chef

It seems simple, but filtering a Google Maps search with the keywords “specialty markets” can reveal a world of allergy-friendly options as well as helpful reviews. Organic markets or health stores are often good alternatives for people with food intolerances.

If you’re planning to eat out, platforms like OpenTable allow you to make direct requests for accommodations in 80 countries. The AllergyEats app lets you search for restaurants with dietary restrictions by state , but it is available only in the United States.

For international destinations, consider carrying a downloadable chef card from the nonprofit group Food Allergy Research & Education to convey, in any of the 10 languages besides English offered on its website, what foods a restaurant must avoid serving you. The iTranslate app can translate from a photograph of a menu or a sign to help you convey your needs to the restaurant staff.

For U.S. getaways, when possible, choose off-peak hours to dine — typically between 2 and 4 p.m., versus during the lunch or dinner rush. At those times, the chef is more likely to be able to speak with you about special meal requests. Also, without orders piling up, the kitchen staff can lower the risk of cross-contamination by taking more time to prepare your meal carefully.

Rellana Twin Moon Knight stands in an Elden Ring DLC boss fight arena in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Rellana, Twin Moon Knight presents a completely different kind of challenge in Elden Ring ’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC compared to what you faced in Belurat . Rellana is swift and merciless, with brutal, near-unbreakable combos, high defenses, and some deadly magic — but has one big weakness.

Our Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree guide explains how to beat Rellana , including details about her weaknesses, and how to prepare for the boss fight.

Rellana location in Elden Ring DLC

Rellana is waiting around in the Ensis Moongazing Grounds at the eastern edge of Castle Ensis . She’s a mandatory boss and impossible to miss if you want to make it to Scadu Altus this way, unless you skip Castle Ensis by taking the long way around via Ellac River. There’s a site of grace just outside her arena, as with all bosses, and two NPC summons: Dryleaf Dane and Needle Knight Leda.

Bear in mind that every NPC or human ally summoned will increase the boss’ health, but having both on hand also makes for a useful set of distractions while you learn how Rellana works — by watching her cut your allies down.

Rellana weaknesses and how to prepare

Picking the best weapon for Rellana is something you’ll probably have to experiment with as you get used to her moveset to see what works best for your style. Heavy weapons can knock off a sizeable chunk of her HP, but the trouble is it’s tough to land a hit with one. Rellana moves quickly in general, and she can dodge heavy attacks and follow up with a strong flurry of counter strikes.

An Elden Ring player circles Rellana in the DLC

I struggled to land more than two hits at a time even with a katana. However, fighting styles with straight swords and light greatswords are lithe enough to let you execute a few attacks — even a well-timed Ash of War skill — and retreat while Rellana recovers. Milady , which you can find near the Miquella’s Cross at the Castle Ensis checkpoint, is a strong choice for this fight.

Use a melee weapon that scales with intelligence or faith if you’re running a magic build, and bear in mind that spells will do little good against Rellana, as she has some of the highest magic defense of any enemy. Magic does have its place in this fight, though, as she’s prone to Frostbite .

She’s also weak to lightning , but it’s rather more difficult to get a good lightning build together if you don’t already have one. Frozen Lightning Spear takes advantage of both weaknesses, though since Rellana tends to dodge sideways, she often places herself out of reach of the incantation’s initial hit and its follow-up explosion. This one works best if Rellana is distracted with an NPC summon or your Spirit Ash .

Rellana lunges at a player with swords imbued with fire and fire in the Elden Ring DLC

An easier way to inflict Frostbite is with Glintstone Icecrag . It has high Frostbite scaling, and unlike Ranni’s Dark Moon, it tracks your target foe and has a faster casting animation. Its low intelligence requirement of 15 means even strength or dexterity builds can use this spell. Rellana won’t take much damage from Icecrag itself, even if you have a high intelligence stat, but it’ll trigger the Frostbite status after about four or five hits. Frostbite deals heavy damage and increases the amount of damage Rellana takes from magic and might for roughly 15 to 20 seconds.

You can also skip the spells and use Freezing Grease on your weapon instead, though Frostbite buildup happens more slowly if you can’t land several hits in a row.

Some purple rocks float between Rellana and the Elden Ring DLC player

Either way, you’ll know it worked if you see a frost cloud hovering around Rellana. You can potentially get away with just using Frostbite to wear her down If your Spirit Ash is aggressive enough to keep her distracted for most of the battle. However, when Frostbite is active, you should try to land some hits with your weapon and take advantage of the ailment while it lasts.

As always, make sure your weapon and Spirit Ash are upgraded as high as you can get them. If you’ve run out of Smithing Stones or Glovewort, take a trip back to The Lands Between to pick up some Bell Bearings for the Maiden Husks.

How to beat Rellana, Twin Moon Knight in Elden Ring DLC

Rellana’s attacks are fast and fluid, and she strings multiple combos together. She sometimes changes which attacks she uses in the middle and sometimes even skipping them completely to deliver one powerful blow when you aren’t expecting it.

As we suggested with the Divine Beast Dancing Lion boss, you may want to consider recording footage of your fight so you can look back later and watch how she behaves without trying not to die.

Rellana boss fight phase 1

Rellana swings a large sword at the Elden Ring DLC player

In general, you can expect three parts to Rellana’s combos.

  • The first is an opening strike, usually a single swipe from one of her swords.
  • Then comes a follow-up from the other sword, which might be an upward slash or an overhand strike. Rellana may add several of these in the middle of her combo, or a downward slash from both swords, or even a little twirling slash.
  • The combo ends with a strong finisher, as she crosses both swords before bringing them down in a powerful thrust.

Rellana can cancel her attacks and switch to a different combo move and seamlessly swap between targeting a summon or you. It all sounds a bit overwhelming — and it feels overwhelming to play, initially — but Rellana’s attacks have one thing in common: They’re all forward-facing. Your first instinct might be to back up and get away when she starts her barrage of attacks, but dodging forward puts you out of harm’s way more effectively.

Still, Rellana pivots quickly, so you won’t have much time to rest after you get away unless she gets distracted by something else.

The Elden Ring DLC player walks back, dodging some of Rellana’s attacks

Her other attacks include a strong thrust followed by a second thrust or a slash from her other sword. Rellana also summons Carian swords that fly at you after a few seconds, similar to what the Carian Knight earlier in Castle Ensis did, and will sometimes fire off an arc of magic energy at you. Dodge forward or to the side when you see her hand and sword glow blue.

The fallen Carian princess also has a devious trick that makes most strong attacks and elaborate weapon skills obsolete. When you start performing one of those attacks, Rellana sweeps around at a 270-degree angle — that’s three-quarters of a circle — and hits you with an upward strike from one of her swords. She’ll sometimes follow that with a downward strike as well. Your skill misses, and you get a big chunk of your HP taken off as well.

Rellana sweeps in a circle attempting to hit the Elden Ring DLC player

Stick to normal attacks when Rellana is facing you, and only opt for something fancier if she’s occupied with another character.

After a few minutes, Rellana will summon a Carian Greatsword and perform a vertical slash, which you can dodge sideways to avoid, followed a second later by a sweeping horizontal slash. Dodging forward or sideways works for this one, but if you miss the right timing, you’ll take heavy damage.

Rellana swipes the area with a huge blue glowing Carian Greatsword in Elden Ring

Rellana boss fight phase 2

Things kick off even more once Rellana’s HP drops by about half, and now’s the time to summon your Spirit Ash if you haven’t already. She pauses for a moment and ignites her right-hand sword with magic and her left-hand sword with fire, and she’ll follow that either with a firestorm that spreads in a diagonal pattern around her or with a flurry of sword strikes that deal fire damage if they connect.

Rellana prepares another attack with a glowing sword in Elden Ring DLC

If it’s the firestorm, make sure you’re not standing on a flame spot before it erupts. If it’s the sword strikes, try dodging them.

Rellana’s basic attack combos are unchanged in this phase, though they can deal magic and fire damage if they connect. She does have some new tricks as well, though.

Her sword summons are more like Greatblade Phalanx than Glintblade Phalanx now, but even though they’ll deal more damage if they hit you, you can still dodge them in the same way as before. Rellana will also use her Carian sword slash skill more frequently and aggressively, often firing several arcs in quick succession.

Rellana will also occasionally thrust both swords forward and create a small tunnel of flame. Dodge sideways from it, and use the few seconds while she finishes the animation to land one or two hits.

Lava and fire plumes around Rellana in the Elden Ring DLC

Once Rellana’s HP reaches about a third of its maximum total, she will occasionally leap into the air and summon two moons. One moon crashes into the ground after a second or two and sends a shockwave of magic out, and the second moon follows right after. Then, Rellana herself crashes back onto the battlefield and sends an even bigger magic wave rippling out.

These moves happen quickly, and not only are they difficult to dodge, but getting hit by all three — or even just Rellana’s final descent — is enough to send you back to the nearest site of grace. Given the nature of the attacks as circular waves, your best bet for avoiding them is dodging forward right when they connect with the ground. Alternatively, if you’re very quick and Rellana isn’t in the arena’s center, you could retreat to the room’s far edge and avoid damage that way.

You might also get lucky and avoid this final trick of hers altogether, if you press the attack hard enough and keep Frostbite going.

Defeating Rellana earns you her Remembrance , which you can give to Enia at Roundtable Hold in exchange for Rellana’s Glintblade Swords or her twin moon sorcery.
