In 2017, Black Tomato launched its Get Lost adventure travel experience. With the support of a dedicated team, and without prior knowledge of where they're headed, Get Lost participants will find their way home from an undisclosed location. The location is selected based on a pre-travel questionnaire about which environment clients would like to immerse themselves in. Then, they show up at the airport and the adventure begins.

Best for Ages 25-39 : For The Love of Travel

With 80 percent of individuals traveling with For The Love of Travel jet -setting solo, each trip is packed with opportunities to meet fellow Millennial and Gen Z travel enthusiasts. For example, within your small “crew” of up to 14 people, make new friends doing snow sports and unwinding in saunas in Lapland or devouring tacos and sipping mezcal in Mexico City. Trips range from four to nine days, including weekends in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain wilderness or an extended weekend in Costa Rica where you’ll hike through rainforests, relax in hammocks, and hike, bike, or surf.

According to company feedback, the average FTLOT traveler is 30 years old and interested in meeting new people while traveling . The company bills itself as a mid-range travel company, where “​​we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin-worthy meal and a private catamaran ride.” 

In 2022, FTLOT plans to offer at least 10 new itineraries including to Belize, Turkey, and Spain’s Basque Country. And for those with the flexibility, the company launched Sojrn in 2021 featuring month-long, themed stays in destinations like Cape Town—focused on biodiversity—and a fashion-oriented stay in Paris.

FTLOT requires an initial deposit and allows installment payments if not paid in full.

Best for 50+ : Overseas Adventure Travel Rates

Overseas Adventure Travel is primarily aimed at American travelers aged 50 and over. It offers guided itineraries to worldwide destinations, including Africa, Antarctica, Asia, and the South Pacific, with trips ranked by activity level and accompanied by a list of physical requirements to help select an itinerary that is best suited for you. For example, their Japan and South Korea itinerary advise that participants be able to carry their own luggage as the selected hotels do not have porter service.

Some of Overseas Adventure Travel’s most popular trips include 17 days of wending the Adriatic from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina (think a walking tour in Dubrovnik, sampling traditional Bosnian food in Sarajevo, and exploring the countryside near Zagreb). On another popular trip, you spend 15 days traveling through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, ending in Helsinki, Finland. All trips offer pre-and post-itinerary extensions, and either waive the single supplement entirely or offer a discount on a private room.

The company offers a free Roommate Matching Program which helps you find a like-minded, same-sex roommate. If they can’t find a match, your single supplement is deducted. Small group sizes typically average 13 travelers.

The company also prioritizes hiring female tour leaders and on-the-ground guides. It offers outdoor adventures for women of all ages and identities and with a range of physical abilities (“whether your greatest skill is tracking a storm or talking up a storm, summiting mountains or summoning courage, keeping your kayak in line or coloring outside the lines,” as the company describes).

The company travels to 31 destinations around the world like Egypt, Tanzania, and the Azores islands. Itineraries are typically adventure-based and are filtered on their website by activity, with options ranging from sailing to cycling and horse riding. Imagine yourself sea kayaking and snorkeling in the Galapagos or scaling glaciers in Alaska. 

Most guests are solo travelers and there’s no single supplement to worry about as accommodation is typically in a shared room or cabin. Though if privacy is a priority, you can usually snag your own room for a nominal extra fee. Group sizes are kept small and social with between six and 14 women, depending on the itinerary you choose. The average group size is eight. 

Wild Women Expeditions also takes care to curate trips that avoid or minimize the disturbance of wildlife; supports environmental education and advocacy projects; and partners with social justice and women’s rights organizations.

Best for Solo Parent Travel : Intrepid Travel

Intrepid ’s family-themed holidays welcome adults traveling with children, including solo parents looking to travel with their kids without the stress of planning and coordinating a trip. Since each family’s travel needs and preferences are different, every itinerary includes an “essential trip information” section where Intrepid outlines whether the trip would be a good fit for you and your kids, as well as a physical rating from least to more strenuous activities. 

For example, an itinerary through part of the Amazon Jungle in Peru advises the jungle can be very hot and humid, and that the weather can be unpredictable in the Andes. On the other hand, an 11-day trip to Borneo island in Southeast Asia lists a minimum age of 5 and outlines a range of accommodations from hotels to guesthouses and jungle camps; on a few occasions, travel times between destinations range between four to five hours. Trips to Costa Rica, Tanzania, China, and Morocco are also listed.

Individuals under 17 years typically receive a 10 percent discount, and the company requires that adults have at least one child under 18 years traveling with them. Accommodation made easy

We try to make this part as simple as possible. You will be paired with another traveller of the same sex to share a room during your adventures so you won’t have to pay anything extra. If you prefer your own room you can pay a little extra (we work hard to keep this as little we can) which we can arrange after making your booking, just let us know.

We try to work with as many local providers as possible. It means we can offer you the biggest range of adventures and it enables you to see countries in a more unique and authentic way. Plus, we can keep the cost of the trip down by cutting out the middle man!

Like-minded travellers

Most trips are guided in small groups, usually made up of between 10 and 15 people. In these groups, half or more will be fellow solo travellers. You get to meet like-minded people who all have the same sense of adventure and thirst for exploring. You'll have a local tour leader to look after all of the group’s needs and logistics and ensure you have the best experience while you are away.

Independent travel

If you like to travel a bit more independently, we have a selection of tours that are self-guided. We will equip you with all the things you may need for your adventure and you can explore at your own pace. Again, we try to keep any single supplements as low as possible by working closely with our local partners.  

Adventure Holidays For Singles

If you're single this type of holiday is fantastic, we would say that but they really are. We have loads of trips for different age ranges and interests. The small group adventures offer a social holiday for singles which provide an immediate group (or squad) to explore with. You'll certainly make friends for life. 

How does room-sharing work?

If you are happy to share, the rooms will be allocated based on gender and age. So, you'd be paired with someone of the same gender and as close to your age as possible.

Now, you might be thinking, 'suppose I don't like my roomie?'. Well, although very rare, this does of course happen. This is a good example of why having a guide is a good idea. If you let your guide know they'll be able to find a solution which works and you can enjoy your holiday. We must stress, this situation is very rare!

If you would prefer your own room then in many cases you can pay a little extra during the checkout process to secure on your booking. Alternatively, we can request your own room from the operator and we try to keep the cost as low as possible for you.

What is the age of other travellers?

This can vary hugely depending on the trip. Take a look on our website for the age range of the tours you are interested in, some providers specialise in particular age groups and that will be listed here. Remember you can also ask our experts.

In general terms though the average age is around 39. However, we have some adventures with an age limit of 18-29 and the average age here is 24. Other adventures have an age range from 18-39 and the average age here is around 30. Then to consider are the tours themselves, some adventure tours just appeal more to a younger or older demographic.

We can always find out the mix of people booked onto any tour.

How social is it?

Most tours have a good mix of time as a group and time alone. In the evenings, for example, you may have dinner all together but you can choose not to join if you prefer to do your own thing. There will also be free time built into the itinerary for you to explore independently.  

You can make the holiday as sociable as you like and the choice is really yours.

Can I get my own room?

Yes, on most adventures you're able to pay a little extra for your own room.

Are other solo travellers on the trips?

Yes, typically each group is made up of around 50% solo travellers and the rest a mix of friends and couples.

How many people are in each group?

Groups sizes range from 1 or 2 up to typically 16 as a maximum but check the adventure details to be sure.

Cost and details of “My Own Room” vary according to the specific trip, so be sure to consult our trip summary pages for full details. On some tours, a single room may not be available at certain overnight stops, depending on the style of accommodation.

Our groups often experience a good mix of ages, everything from travellers in their early-20s to those aged 60 and over. We sort all of our trips into Travel Styles, which guarantee that you’ll be travelling with people who share the same interests you do. Over the years, we’ve found that a good range of ages within a group often adds to the experience

On most evenings, your Chief Experience Officer (CEO) will organize a group meal. It’s pretty flexible; you can choose to dine with the group or head off and do your own thing. Other nights, your CEO may recommend a few nearby restaurants you can try. Again, you determine whether you want to stick with the group or go it alone.

Most of our trips split pretty evenly down gender lines. We average roughly 60:40 female-to-male, so you’ll never feel outnumbered.

On most G Adventures tours, the ratio of solo travellers to others (couples, friends travelling together, etc) is roughly 40:60. For privacy reasons, we can’t share information about your soon-to-be travelling companions ahead of time. Our tours appeal to a wide cross-section of adventurous people from all over the world united by a desire to experience our planet from a grassroots level. Our tours are conducted in English and tend to attract travellers from North America, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.

A solo holiday means flexibility . That’s why, when you travel solo with Friendship Travel , you’ll have a selection of airports and flights to choose from, even on trips that include the cost of the flight in the package.

Once you’re in the country, we pay for the cost of transfers between the airport and the hotel, and we try to be as flexible with these as possible. However, if your flight is too far outside the designated time slot for arrival, we may have to charge extra for the additional journey we’ll need to make.

THE HOLIDAY TRAVELER APP

GREAT FEATURES AND BENEFITS Our new mobile app, Holiday Traveler, has launched! Available for free on Apple and Android devices, the app provides numerous features and benefits that enhance your tour experience at all stages of your journey.

EASY TO SET UP – EASY TO USE Download the app, create an account, then add your tour(s). As your tour nears and documents are finalized, you will find them here, such as an introduction to your tour director, flight details, and travel documents. Receive additional app details by email 21 days prior to departure. They will also be provided in your tour documents that are mailed approximately 10 days prior to departure.

Step 1: Press ‘CREATE AN ACCOUNT.’

Step 2: Enter your email address and first and last name, then press “I Agree” on the next page.

The account creation process then completes and the app opens to the home page.

Step 3: You will then receive a confirmation email. Once received please press ‘Confirm email’.

Note – remember to check your junk mail if you do not receive this confirmation email within 10 minutes.

Step 4: Once the Account has been created then you press the Add my Tour button. The Booking Number form then appears.

Step 5: Add your booking number and last name then press “Submit.”

Step 6: A list of guests on the booking are displayed and then choose your name.

Step 7: Press ‘CONNECT FAMILY & FRIENDS’ if you wish to use the app to send your tour album and email postcards to your family and friends during your tour.

Step 1: There are two ways to start adding a tour:

Option 1: Press the “+” icon. The Switch Tour screen will display with an “Add a Tour” button.

Option 2: Press the on the “≡” menu icon at the top left of the screen. Then select “Add a Tour” from the menu.

Step 2: The Booking number screen will display. Add the booking number and last name of the booking, then hit the submit button.

Step 3: The Booking number screen will display. Add the booking number and last name of the booking, then hit the submit button.

Step 4: Once the “Tour Added” notification pops up, again click on the “+” icon to go to the Switch Tour screen.

Step 5: Choose which tour you want displayed. You may also delete old tours if you wish using the trashcan icon and pressing the “Confirm Delete” button that pops up.

Learn About Your Tour Director Read a bio about your expert Holiday Vacations tour director before you travel.

HOW-TO: Press “My Booking,” then “My Tour Director” from the main menu.

View Your Travel Documents, Hotel Details, Flight Details and the Latest Travel Requirements Your Holiday Traveler app gives you access to information on your flights, hotel stays, and international entry requirements.

HOW-TO: Press “My Booking” from the main menu, then My eDocs,”“My Flights,” “My Hotels,” or “My Travel Requirements.”

Chat Directly with Your Tour Director If you have any questions during your tour, you can use the app to chat directly with your Tour Director. They can also message the group with any updates or changes.

HOW-TO: Press “Chat with Tour Director” from the main menu. You can now view past message or start a new one by clicking the plus icon at the top right of the screen.

View Your Detailed Itinerary – Access Your Tour Itinerary, Weather, and Tour Map You will see your tour Itinerary and weather information as well as detailed information about the daily activities and highlights you will enjoy along the way.

HOW-TO: Press “My Tour Itinerary” from the main menu. Press the box at the bottom with the date of the information you would like to view. This will open an overview of the day. Click the arrow next to the weather information for more in-depth details (weather will not appear until close to your trip). Daily activities schedule, press “View Activities.”

Create Your Personal Travel Album With your Holiday Traveler app you can add your favorite holiday photos to your personal Tour Album. Each photo is tagged to the map so you know exactly where it was taken.

HOW-TO: Press “My Tour Album” from the main menu. Press on the “Add Photo” button in the bottom left. Either choose photos from your phone or use the camera to add them to the app. Choose the add a caption, choose your sharing options, and press“Add.” You can also send an E-Postcard at this time if desired.

Send Email Postcards – Share Your Tour with Family and Friends Each photo you add to your Tour Album can also be sent to your selected friends as an attractive email postcard. Each postcard you send includes a link that will take your friends to an online version of your Tour Album.

HOW-TO: Press “My Tour Album” from the main menu. If you already have photos uploaded press on the “Send E-Postcard” button in the bottom right. Send up to 1 photo with the “Send E-Postcard” or up to five with the “Create Collage.” (keep in mind they can access full travel album via the email link). Add a message, pick your contacts, and press “Send.”

Your Friends Can Follow Along In ‘Real Time’- Friends Can See Your Tour Album and Live Tracking Map Your friends who receive your postcards will see a link to a live tracking map of your Tour and all of the photos you have chosen to share along the way!

HOW-TO: Press the “Share My Tour” from the main menu, click on the up-arrow icon in the itinerary, or send an Email Postcard.

Complete Your Tour Survey Without Having to Wait Your tour survey will be available from the first day so you can complete your feedback at your desired pace while the experience is fresh in your mind.

HOW-TO: Press “My Survey” from the main menu. You can now add feedback as desired. You can move forward or backward in the survey and it will save the information you have entered. However if you click submit at the end, you will no longer be able to edit.

When can I download the app before my tour?

It is available in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store 30 days prior to your tour’s departure.

How do I add a tour?

Press on ‘Add a tour’ on the home screen and enter your booking number and last name (if it not already entered).

Where can I find my booking number?

Your booking number is provided in your trip confirmation email that is sent 24 hours after booking as well as with the Booking Summary that comes with your invoice. You can also find the booking number on your invoice located below your address and after the tour code. See example below: Stephanie Long 303 Orchard Dr. Irwin, PA 15642 AKKT:20220802-1 58753 Apr 19, 2022 In this example the booking number is 58753

Will the app work if I’m not connected to the internet or data services?

The Holiday Traveler App is designed to work in both an online and ‘off-line’ mode. When not connected to the Internet certain features will be disabled. You will however still be able to upload photos to your tour album. These photos will automatically be uploaded to your on-line account when you next connect to the Internet. Likewise any unsent email postcards you have sent via the Holiday Traveler App while offline will be sent when you again reconnect to the Internet.

How do I ensure the app doesn’t use mobile data?

We understand that guests might not want to incur data or roaming charges while using the app. If this is a concern, particularly for international travel, we recommend using your phone in “Airplane Mode” when you are not on WIFI for this (and any) app while you are traveling.

Can the app access information on my phone?

To add photos to your Trip album, you will need to give the app permission to access your phone’s photos. However, that will only give the app the ability to access photos that you choose to upload and nothing beyond that. View the next question for answers on photo rights that are uploaded to the app.

Can Holiday Vacations use my photos that I upload into the app?

We give you the option to choose whether you share your photos with Holiday Vacations or just your friends and family. When you upload photos to your Tour Album or Send an E-Postcard, you can press the check box to either enable Holiday Vacations to showcase your photos or keep them private. If you choose to share your photos with Holiday Vacations, it gives us the right to use those photos on social media or other promotional material like brochures and catalogs.

Can I send more than one photo using the email postcard?

At this time, only one photo or a single photo collage can be sent by email postcard at a time.

How can I add the location to my photos in my photo album?

If your device’s privacy settings has enabled Location Services, your device’s camera will retain your photos’ location information. The Holiday Traveler app automatically reads this location information when you add photos to your album. To upload a photo into My Tour Album, do the following:

• Open your tour album by pressing ‘My Tour Album’ on the home screen.
• Select one of your photos that you have uploaded by pressing on a photo in the grid. Once the photo opens in a single page you can see where it was taken by pressing on the ‘Map’ button located on the right-hand side
• After pressing the ‘Map’ button you will see the photo displayed on the map above the location where it was taken.

I like to work on my tour survey throughout the trip, can I still do this in the app?

Your tour survey will be avilable from day 1 of your tour. You may input feedback and navigate throughout the different screens of questions by pressing “Next” or “Back.” However, if your press “Submit” at the end of the survey, you will not be able to further modify your answers.

Tour days tend to be shorter in length, at a relaxed pace, and include lots of unscheduled time for leisure. Expect standing and walking for extended periods of time on flat surfaces, mostly low altitudes, and consistent temperatures.

Excellent trip

I found the overall trip excellent. I believe Diane's professionalism, inclusive personality and ability to relate to all contributed to this. Fantastic first solo trip

I had a fantastic trip. Absolutely loved Canada and Alaska. It's the first time I have travelled solo and was pleasantly surprised to find a bunch of people that all got on so well. Diane our host was great. She did a good job of getting us altogether for meals, excursions, shopping trips etc. I liked that she quietly got things done without being loud or "in-your-face". I had a fabulous time

I had a fabulous time. Lake Louise and the hotel were magnificent. The cruise was excellent. Diane made sure that she was available for group meals and sightseeing, and was alway in good humour and great fun. I would recommend your company to everyone and am very interested in the Scandinavia  tour at the end of 2017.

Great holiday

Juneteenth, which became both a federal and state holiday in 2021 , celebrates the anniversary of federal troops’ arrival in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to ensure all enslaved people had been freed. This year, the holiday falls on Wednesday, but celebrations are happening over the next two weeks.

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. –  Indigo Arts Alliance presents The Welcome Table, an intergenerational symposium celebrating global cultural and culinary histories. Activities include art, movement and meditation workshops led by activists and cultural workers. 60 Cove St., Portland.  indigoartsalliance.me

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. –  Victoria Mansion is hosting a community day with free admission and a recitation of the Emancipation Proclamation by local actors. 109 Danforth St. Portland.  victoriamansion.org

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. –  Space and the Tate House Museum are putting on a Juneteenth community day with free admission and tours of Ashley Page’s “Imagining Freedom” exhibit at the museum. 1-6:30 p.m. –  The first event of “The City that Carries Us: Pain, Streets, and Heartbeats” will take place at the Public Theatre in Lewiston. The celebration will have a parade and a block party with performances, as well as scheduled activities and rituals throughout the day. 2-3 p.m. –  Through “Poems of Reckoning and Resilience,” the Portland Museum of Art and Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance seek to honor the legacy of Black Americans. Featured poet Nathan McClain will join local poets in the Great Hall at the museum to celebrate Black liberation and creativity. 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. –  The fifth annual Juneteenth Celebration on House Island in Casco Bay will focus on Black joy, as well as nature, health and economic opportunity. 4:30-7 p.m. –  The Community Organizing Alliance is putting on an event with speakers, live performances, poetry readings, a voter registration drive and catering by Bab’s Table. 7-8 p.m. –  The Portland Yoga Project is putting on a class called “Liberated Breath: A Juneteenth Yoga Experience” that seeks to reflect on the holiday through yoga.
