How to plan a road trip in Crete (by car) – Guide + Itinerary Tips

Below are all my tips to help you plan your ideal Crete Road Trip. Exploring Crete by car is definitively the best way to discover the best that the largest of the Greek islands has to offer: beaches, mountains, gorges, monasteries, caves and villages. This should help you decide the best time to visit, where to go, define your Crete itinerary and prepare for your trip! Let’s make your trip unforgettable!

STEP 0 – Essentials to know before planning a Road Trip in Crete

Let’s start with a few essential facts to keep in mind before planning your trip to Crete :

• PLANNING – There are lots and lots of places to see in Crete ( see my best-of list ), often separated by mountain roads, so be reasonable in the planning  o your Crete itinerary
• HIGHWAYS – There are a couple of high speed roads on the North coast but no highways. No tollroads either. On those high-speed road, you should drive partially on the emergency lane to let vehicles overtake you (this is how it works here in reality)
• MOUNTAINS – There are mountain chains on the island, so you will find twisting roads and sometimes snowy conditions in Winter. My opinion is that there are not many very difficult roads, they are mostly wide enough.

• ACCOMMODATIONS   – Some destinations get very busy during the touristic season and you’d better book accommodations in advance (Elafonisi, Chora Sfakion…)
• CROWDS – July and August get really really crowded 
• WEATHER – Pack layers of clothes. Because of the mountains the weather can change, with storms and rain. Be ready for all weather.
• HOLIDAY TYPES – The North Coast is developed with organized beaches, while the South Coast is wilder
• GOOD TO KNOW – Part of the South coast is not accessible by car (around Agia Roumeli and Loutro, East of Palaiochora)

STEP 1 – Decide the best time to visit Crete for your road trip

If your dates are already blocked and you have no choice, skip to the next step. And don’t worry the island of Crete is beautiful all year round!

If you have not decided when to visit Crete yet, here are a few things to consider:

• Official Summer  period – Best months to visit Corsica are considered to be from  April to November  – during those, temperatures are nice reaching above 20°C during the day (Above 68°F)
• Opening sites – The Summer opening hours of the archaeological sites and museums are from April to November. Some places may be closed during Winter
• Crowds – July and August get really crowded especially on the popular beaches and famous town such as Chania and Rethymno.
• May and October are my favorite months. The water is still find to go swimming, especially in the shallow depth of lagoons

• If traveling in Winter, there will be snow in the mountains, and some passes may be closed
• In Winter, days are shorter and limit your exploration hours on a road trip
• In Summer you can have storms because of the mountains. And in shoulder seasons, you will probably wind and rain up in the mountains.

STEP 2 – Where to go in Crete – Regions and Map

Crete is cut in 4 main touristic regions. They are all home to nice beaches, archaeological sites and other wonders. However in all my favorite places to see, the highest numbers are in the Chania district and the Lassithi district. Below is a rough Map of the regions with just a few of the most famous sites

Overall touristic approach

The main distinction is that the North coast is much more developed with:

• The high speed road from Kissamos at the West end to Sitia at the East end
• All the main towns: Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos
• You will hardly find any wild beaches. They are all organized.

While on the South Coast the mountains are close to the coast, so some beaches are still quite wild and there are even areas not reachable by car.

The touristic regions of Crete – best places to visit in Crete by car

Here is an overview of the 4 regions and their highlights to help you narrow down where to go on your Crete road trip:

Chania Region

Chania is the Western part of Crete.  You won’t find many ruins here but some of the most beautiful beaches in Crete. The West coast is rather wild and you can choose between the inspired town of Chania or the isolated option of Palaiochora between mountains and sea.

Highlights:

• The inspiring landscapes Balos Lagoon
• The pink sand of Elafonisi beach
• The Venetian harbour of Chania
• The famous hike of Samaria Gorge

Rethymno Region

Rethymno one of the main town in Crete. It does not have the charm of Chania but it has a very long beach with seafront hotels. The region is home to some famous beaches and monasteries

• Preveli beach with the lake and the Palm trees
• The historical monastery of Arkadi
• Chora Sfakion and the ferry access to the undeveloped coast
• Lake Kournas, the only fresh water lake in Crete

Heraklion Region

If you want to discover more about the Minoan civilization, this is the region for you. And it is home to the capital of Crete: Heraklion with its airport and major harbor.

• Knossos Minoan Palace (home of the Minotaur legend)
• Phaistos Minoan Palace
• Matala Beach and its cave
• Gortyna ruins with the code of Law
• and the fantastic Archaeological museum in Heraklion

Lassithi Region

Lassithi is the region that has it all: Minoan sites, historical sites, organized beaches, cild beaches, mountains, monasteries… This is the region that gives one of the best overall view of Crete, in my opinion.

• Malia Minoan Palace
• Voulisma beach with unbelievable colors
• Vai beach with its palm trees
• Spinalonga island , the fortified islet with a long history
• Zakros: beach, ruins and gorge 
• The Lassithi plateau with the famous Cave of Zeus

STEP 3 – How long to tour Crete by car

Time for the complete tour of crete by car.

I would not attempt the tour of the island if you have less than 10 days. And even with 10 days, you will have to be rigorous in your planning and only select a few places to get an overall feel of each area in order to tour Crete by car.2 to 3 weeks is way more comfortable

Time to dedicate to each region

Of course you can focus on just one single region and visit it in depth. But below are my estimations to give you a general idea of what to plan. This timeframe do not include spending long hours laying on beaches or long hikes. I love road trips and seeing as much as possible:

• Chania Region – 4 to 7 days
• Rethymno Region – 3 to 6 days
• Heraklion Region – 2 to 5 days
• Lassithi Region – 4 to 7 days

Driving times in Crete

STEP 4 – How to get to Crete

Crete being an island, there are 2 ways to reach it: by plane or by boat.

Flight to Crete

For shorter travel time, I recommend the plane. You easily save one day of travel and the rental car prices are reasonable.

• The major airport is in Heraklion
• Smaller airport in Chania
• Coming from outside Europe, you will probably have a layover in Athens
• The local company is called Aegan Airlines
• Flights from Athens take 1h
• Flights from London takes 4h (if non-stop)
• Check out flight options on Skyscanner

Ferry to Crete

If you really want to come with your car you can take a ferry from Athens or from one of the other Greek islands (if doing a longer trip)

• Most ferries arrive in Heraklion
• The ferry from Athens takes 7 to 9 hours depending on which company you select. There are overnight crossing options.
• You can find all your ferry options and times on  Directferries.com

Don’t forget to check if you need a Visa to travel here. Crete is part of Greece and inside the Schengen area.

STEP 5 – Rent your car in Crete

If you fly in, it is now time to rent your car. You will find all the international brands and many many local companies at the Heraklion airport. It is very impressive. I have never seen that many options at an airport!

Here are a few tips:

• If you are not the most skilled driver, pick a car that is not too large so that you will be more comfortable in the more narrow sections of the roads
• Pick a car that has a good motor so that you can drive more comfortably in the mountains
• Note: In Crete, most cars are manual, so you will pay more to get automatic
• You don’t really need a 4WD, especially as most companies do not allow you to drive offroad even with a 4WD for insurance reasons
• If driving in the mountains, I recommend getting insurance for window protection because I saw a lot of gravels and rocks fallen on the side of the road

• Book early  to have a large choice of vehicles!

STEP 6 – Create your Crete Itinerary

Now that you have dates and transportation, you “just” have to decide on your Crete itinerary.

When planning your Crete road trip itinerary don’t forget to consider the following essentials:

• DRIVING TIMES  – Always plan more time to go from point A to point B than what Google says. You will want to stop all the time to admire the scenery and the roads might have animals or traffic
• DAYLIGHT HOURS – Check out the daylight hours you have available when you are traveling. Check out how long you have to see all the sites during the days 
• PLAN FLEXIBILITY – Sometimes you can have bad weather conditions in the mountains. So plan to be flexible. 
• BOAT TOURS – plan time to enjoy boat trips to some amazing locations (Balos, Loutro, Spinalonga).. and this give you a break from driving; Check out my list of the best Boat trips in Crete

STEP 7 – Book your Accommodations for your Crete road trip

There is a very large choice of accommodations in Crete – campsites, hotels, resorts, rentals and all inclusive resorts. You can find something for everyone’s taste.

A few things to be aware of:

• Generally wifi is good
• Swimming pools at hotels are not often heated, so it can be cold during shoulder seasons
• Most establishment accept credit cards, but you may find a few places that will ask for cash
• A lot of places have very small showers. This is something to be aware of. It this is important to you, check out the pictures in details before booking.

Below is a snapshot of some of the places where I stayed. I will tell you more in my article about accommodations in Crete .

I think some of the best places to stay in Crete are:

• Chania  -The Venetian harbour and old town deserves for you to stay overnight. There is a great atmosphere in the evening – Check out the best rated accommodations in Chania
• Elafonisi – The shallow lagoon and beach are very popular. The best time to see it is at sunset or sunrise. There are not many accommodations but you can sty nearby. I stayed at the Elafonisi resort by Kalomirakis Family in a nice villa surrounded by olive trees – Check out photos and availability
• For stunning scenery , away from the large crowds –  See best rated options in Palaiochora
• For a very quiet area  –  see best rated options in Mochlos
• For a sandy beach  and some nightlife –  See best rated options in Malia  or  in Bali
• And many many places where you can stay right by the water with seaviews (for relatively cheap off the main touristic months)

STEP 8 – Get all the equipment you need to tour Crete by car

Classic clothes. Nothing special to think about. Check my overall  preparation and packing checklists  to help you.

And don’t forget: 

• Layers for rain and for colder night in the evening in the mountains
• Sunglasses & Hat
• Hiking shoes

And regarding electronics and other equipments, I recommend

• Photography equipment
• GoPro for snorkeling
• An extra battery to recharge your phone – you will want to take many photos and videos!
• I also recommend binoculars to see the geological details and animals in the gorges and the wild areas – see my guide to help you choose your binoculars

Binoculars to be able to admire all the details in the scenery and monuments ( see my guide )

Thermal Blanket. They don’t take a lot of space and it is safer to have one when driving in Winter or hiking

Power strip + adapter to be able to charge all my equipment at once

STEP 9 – Get ready to drive in Crete

I know you can find  a lot of comments from people who got scared driving in Crete. Personally, I did not find it that difficult. There are a few things to be aware but nothing really scary.

You just have to be aware that:

• On the high seep roads, you have to drive half over the emergency lane, to let the other cars overtake you. This is not in the driving rules, but it is how it works. If someones behind you i flicking its lights, move over the emergency lane.
• Animals can appear in the middle of the secondary road, so be vigilant!
• The other danger are small rocks falling in the mountains. You will see a lot on the side of the roads. Make sure you take an insurance that covers that.
• Just take your time and breathe. The millions of people who have had no issues tend not to write on the Internet that all went smoothly you only see people who got scared

STEP 10 – Fill your GPS with the coordinates

What I hate the most when road tripping is wasting time. Turning around to find a place, missing an exit. Sometimes it leads to adventure, but most of the time it just leads to frustration.

This is why I don’t rent a GPS with the car. I have my own TomTom. With this system I can use the MyDrive system on my computer to add all the hotels’ GPS coordinates as well as the carparks’ coordinates for all the attractions I would like to see.

This way I just pick the favorite and follow the directions!!! I recommend you do that for your road trip in Crete.

STEP 11 – Get ready for your Travels in Crete

Generally they speak good English throughout the island. Just in a few places it was a bit more difficult but we managed. Saying a few words in greek is always appreciated:

• Good morning – Kah-lee-MER-ah
• Bye – YAH-soo
• Please – Pa-ra-ka-LOH
• Thank you – eff-kha-ri-STOE
• Excuse me – sig-NO-mii

Food is great! A few things to know

• Almost all the places where we ate had menus in English (even in isolated areas).
• You will always find salads on the menu
• Sometimes the bread is placed on the table but not free
• Portions are very large. We used to take 2 dishes for 3 adults or share a selections of delicious appetizers
• Don’t miss the freshly squeezed juices !

Other tips for traveling in Crete

• Emergency number is 112
• Plug is 2 round holes
• Generally avoid tap water and use bottle water
• You must not throw the toilet paper in the toilet but in the bin of the bathroom

Here’s Why Sailboats Can Travel Faster Than The Wind

If you’ve ever wondered how the wind travels one speed but sailboats can travel another, then this handy explainer is for you..

Here at Jalopnik we usually like to focus on anything with an engine. Whether it’s a gorgeous new Bugatti with a V16 motor at the rear or a ridiculous driveable bathtub that’s powered by a motorbike , we love anything that goes vroom. Sometimes, however, we need to take a ride in the slow lane and look at things that move under their own steam, things like sailboats .

Sailboats have been the go-to way of getting around for many people for thousands of years. The craft are pretty simple, with a hull offering space for the captain, their passengers or cargo, and a sail at the center catching the wind’s power and moving you forward. But have you ever wondered why sailboats aren’t limited to travelling at the same speed as the wind wherever they go?

According to Instagram user Steve Mould, the brains behind the Stevemouldscience page , there’s a very simple explanation for how sailboats can go at almost any speed they want regardless of the wind.

To explain why this is, Mould starts with a model of a boat that has its sail at 45 degrees and pushes it side on. At this angle, the model boat moves as far forward as the simulated wind does when passing over the sail - meaning that both the wind and the ship are moving at the same speed.

Mould explains that this happens because the packet of wind, as he puts it, moves across the sail at the same speed as the other packets of wind around it so as not to cause any areas of low pressure. As it moves over the sail, it pushes the boat forward so it doesn’t cause any resistance to the flow of the wind. If the boat didn’t move, it would provide too much resistance to the wind, which would push it to speed up.

When the sail is pulled in much tighter to the boat, its angle to the wind is more acute and that makes the ship travel faster. This is for the same reason, except now as the packet of air moves forward, the length of the sail that the boat will move forward by is much longer in comparison.

Mould then hypothesizes that surely this means you could pull the sail in even sharper and go even faster. However, he explained that there’s an optimum angle at which the sail should be positioned. If it’s too sharp, the drag of the ship would be too much and the boat risks restricting the wind and capsizing.

It’s a nifty little explainer that gets to the bottom of one of the fundamentals of early transport, so I urge you to head to Mould’s page and give it a watch. While you’re there, check out some of his other videos on hammerhead sharks and sound waves.

What are the worst times for car travel during July 4 week? Here's what AAA says.

With Independence Day approaching on July 4, people are planning on hitting the road.

And according to AAA Northeast , that means traffic - lots of it.

“Summer vacations are in full swing, and with the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” AAA Northeast Senior Spokesperson Mark Schieldrop, said in a statement sent to USA Today Network New England. “We anticipate this July 4 week will be the busiest ever with an additional 5.7 million people traveling compared to 2019.”

Here's what to know about traveling during the upcoming holiday.

How many travelers are expected on the roads for July 4 travel?

AAA is projecting that 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home during the holiday travel period from June 29 to July 7.

This year’s projected number of travelers for that time period represents a 5% increase compared to 2023 and an 8% increase over 2019, according to a statement from AAA Northeast.

How many people are expected to travel by car?

AAA stated that a record 60.6 million people will travel by car over Independence Day week, which represents an additional 2.8 million travelers compared to 2023.

What are the worst times to travel by car during July 4 week?

AAA said that "the worst times to travel by car on the days leading up to and including July 4 are between 2 and 7 p.m., according to transportation data and insights provider INRIX ."

AAA added that the worst traffic delays are expected on Wednesday, July 3, "as travelers leave town, and on Sunday, July 7, as they return."

Here are the best, worst times to travel by car during the upcoming holiday week, according to AAA Northeast.

How many travelers are expected to fly next week?

AAA stated that the number of people flying is also expected to set a new record. The auto agency is estimating that "5.74 million people will fly to their July 4 destinations . That’s an increase of nearly 7% compared to last year and a 12% increase over 2019."

Are people traveling by other ways as well?

AAA noted that more than 4.6 million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation during the upcoming holiday week . Those means of travel include taking buses, cruise ships and trains. This category is seeing an increase of 9% compared to last year.

“What a delight it was to spend five minutes going over my car after a 12-hour drive with a small child, and getting everything nice and clean again for the drive home,” wrote one reviewer . “The attachments allowed me to get into the car seat, and sucked up all the miscellaneous snacks that seemingly disappeared into the abyss.” They said the vacuum is worth every penny.

The device comes with a two-in-one hose and dusting brush attachment for getting into crevices. The included stand stores both the vacuum and the attachment. It also comes with a USB cable that you can use to charge at home, in your hotel room, off a laptop, or in your car.

AIG Travel Guard Travel Insurance Review

AIG Travel Guard is among the best travel insurance companies with impressive coverage limits, even with its basic plan, Travel Guard Essential. It's emergency medical evacuation coverage is particularly high, making Travel Guard a good choice for insuring cruises, as sea to land evacuations are often expensive. 

Additionally, Travel Guard's Premium and Deluxe plans offer coverage that many of its competitors don't, such as its travel inconvenience coverage and ancillary evacuation coverage.  

That said, Travel Guard is on the pricey side, compared with its competitors. While age is often a factor in your insurance premiums, Travel Guard tends to quote older travelers higher rates than its competitors. However, you often get what you pay for. In Travel Guard's case, you'll find that its coverage justifies its higher rates. 

While great coverage is important, it's also crucial that an insurance company has a smooth claims process, which Travel Guard lacks, according to its customer reviews. Across 135 reviews on its Trustpilot page, AIG Travel Guard received an average of 1.2 stars, with 95% of reviewers giving the company one star. Surprisingly, AIG Travel Guard fares even worse with the Better Business Bureau, receiving an average of 1.08 stars out of five across 301 reviews. 

Coverage Options Offered by AIG Travel Guard

AIG Travel Guard offers three primary plans: Travel Guard Essential, Travel Guard Preferred, and Travel Guard Deluxe. Each plan has different coverage limits and various types of protection.

Here's a look at what you'll get with each plan:

Depending on the policy you select, additional coverages may be included at no extra charge, such as a pre-existing conditions waiver , single occupancy fee coverage, worldwide travel and medical assistance services, and more. Be sure to check each policy closely to see what is and isn't covered.

Each of these plans also includes coverage for one child under 17 as long as their travel costs are equal to or under the adult's cost. Additional coverage does not apply to the child.

The availability of these add-ons depends on the policy you're buying. Note also that some are already included in the Preferred and Deluxe plans. 

• Medical bundle — Increases coverage amounts for medical expenses and evacuation and adds hospital of choice and additional evacuation benefits.  
• Security bundle — Provides various coverages for trip interruption or cancellation due to riot or civil disorder.  
• Rental vehicle damage coverage — Reimburses a predetermined amount for physical damage to a rental car in the policyholder's name. 
• Cancel for Any Reason Insurance (CFAR) — This is just what it sounds like. AIG Travel Guard vs. Nationwide Travel Insurance

Nationwide is a household name when it comes to insurance providers and one of the largest and most recognized insurance providers in the US. Similarly to Travel Guard , Nationwide makes it easy to find coverage by offering just two single-trip plans: the Essential and Prime plan.  

In addition, Nationwide offers plans specifically designed for cruises along with annual trip insurance for those who travel a lot throughout the year.  

The Nationwide Essential Plan comes with trip cancellation coverage of up to $10,000, up to $250,000 in emergency medical evacuation, up to $150 per day reimbursement for travel delays of 6+ hours, and coverage for delayed or lost baggage.

In comparison, the Travel Guard Essential plan covers trip cancellations with up to $100,0000 in coverage, up to $150,000 in emergency medical evacuation expenses, up to $100 per day ($500 total) for trip delays of 12+ hours, along with lost or delayed baggage coverage. 

The high-tier Prime Plan from Nationwide offers even more coverage, including trip cancellation up to $30,000, trip interruption coverage up to 200% of the trip cost (maximum of $60,000), missed connection and itinerary change coverage of $500 each, $250 per day for trip delays of 6+ hours, and up to $1 million in coverage for emergency medical evacuation

AIG's highest-tier Deluxe plan comes with trip cancellation coverage of up to $150,000, up to $1,000,000 in emergency medical evacuation, up to $200 per day ($1,000 maximum) reimbursement for travel delays of 12+ hours, and coverage for delayed or lost baggage.

As you can see, it's hard to compare apples to apples when comparing the two different insurance providers. But it helps to know the specifics of the coverages that matter most to you.

AIG Travel Guard vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

With Allianz Travel Insurance , you can choose from 10 different insurance plans to find one that suits your needs. Like Travel Guard , it offers one-off policies for specific trips and an annual travel insurance plan for those who take multiple trips a year. Similar to AIG, too, the different plans offer varying levels of coverage. 

Allianz's most popular single-trip option is the OneTrip Prime plan. This plan offers trip cancellation coverage up to $100,000, trip interruption coverage up to $150,000, emergency medical coverage for $50,000, coverage for baggage loss, theft, or damage up to $1,000, and up to $800 in travel delay coverage.

The most similar plan from Travel Guard is the mid-tier Travel Guard Preferred plan, which which you'll get up to $150,000 in trip cancellation coverage, trip interruption coverage up to $225,000, $50,000 in emergency medical coverage, coverage for baggage loss, theft, or damage up to $1,000, and travel delay coverage of up to $800.

A variety of factors will determine the final cost of any of these travel insurance policies. However, when comparing quotes with the same factors, Allianz tends to be cheaper. Additionally, Travel Guard seems to be more sensitive to the traveler's age. However, it's best to compare quotes using your specific personal and trip details to determine which policy is the best for you.

AIG Travel Guard vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

Before purchasing a travel insurance plan, take a look at the coverage offered through your travel rewards credit cards. Some of the basic coverages you're looking for, like rental car insurance, may already be available through credit card travel protection . 

The coverage you have on your credit card couple be sufficient if, for example, you're taking a road trip by car and you don't have any non-refundable trip expenses. It could also be enough if your health insurance covers you while you travel and you aren't overly worried about incurring additional medical expenses during your trip.

It's also worth remembering that credit card coverage is usually secondary versus the primary coverage you'd get with a travel insurance policy. Meaning you'll have to file a claim with the other applicable insurance (like through the airline travel provider) before filing a claim with your credit card company.

Nearly 71 Million People Expected to Travel over July 4th Week

This year’s extended independence day forecast exceeds pre-pandemic numbers, sets new record.

WASHINGTON, DC (June 20, 2024) – AAA projects 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Independence Day holiday travel period*. For the first time, AAA looked at the entire July 4 th week, plus the Saturday before and the Sunday after the holiday. This year’s projected number of travelers for that time period is a 5% increase compared to 2023 and an 8% increase over 2019.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We anticipate this July 4 th week will be the busiest ever with an additional 5.7 million people traveling compared to 2019.”   

AAA projects a record 60.6 million people will travel by car over Independence Day week – that’s an additional 2.8 million travelers compared to last year. This year’s number also surpasses 2019 when 55.3 million people traveled by car over July 4 th week. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Dallas, Denver, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are the cities displaying the highest rental demand during the holiday week. The busiest pick-up days are projected to be Friday, June 28, Saturday, June 29, and Wednesday, July 3.   

Gas prices are lower than last year when the national average was $3.53. Pump prices will likely continue going down leading up to Independence Day.  At that point, they will likely level off and remain relatively stable until after Labor Day, similar to last year.  An important caveat is hurricane season – underway now – which could affect gas prices should a storm negatively impact Gulf Coast oil production and refining centers.  

The number of air travelers is also expected to set a new record. AAA projects 5.74 million people will fly to their July 4 th destinations. That’s an increase of nearly 7% compared to last year and a 12% increase over 2019. AAA booking data shows domestic airfare is 2% cheaper this Independence Day week compared to last year, and the average price for a domestic roundtrip ticket is $800. Airports will be packed throughout the week. AAA recommends arriving 2 hours early, reserving parking ahead of time, and traveling with carry-on luggage versus checked bags to save time and money.   

More than 4.6 million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. This category is seeing an increase of 9% compared to last year, but this year’s number is shy of 2019’s figure of 4.79 million. Cruising continues its remarkable post-pandemic comeback. This time of year, Alaska cruises are in high demand, making Seattle and Anchorage top domestic destinations. Cruise travelers are also finding deals this summer. With new ships coming onto the market – and going for a premium – some cruise lines have been offering targeted discounts to fill older inventory for remaining cabins.  

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro 

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says the worst times to travel by car before and on July 4 th are between 2pm and 7pm. Drivers should hit the road in the morning, and travelers returning on Monday, July 8 th should avoid rush hour traffic in the morning and afternoon.  

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3 rd , as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7th, as they return,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “R oad trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal. Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations, and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions.”

Family Road Trip Checklist    

With road trips expected to set a new record this July 4 th week, AAA teamed up with Chicco to share safety tips for families with young children.  

• Check car seat fit. Before you hit the road, check your child’s weight and height to ensure they’re in the right seat and mode of use – especially when it comes to transitioning from rear to forward-facing. Children should remain rear-facing as long as possible for better protection of their head, neck, and spine in the event of a crash. • Double check car seat installation. Even if your car seat is already installed in the car, it’s worth checking everything is safe and secure. An easy at-home way to do this is with the “inch test.” Simply grab the seat at the car seat belt path and pull side to side and front to back. If it moves more than one inch in any direction, uninstall and start over until a secure fit is achieved. For any questions, utilize the car seat manual, QR codes, or online resources like those offered by Chicco.    
• Secure loose items in the car. Take time to organize and clean up your car before hitting the road. Storage organizers that secure to the back of the driver and passenger seats are simple solutions to make sure everything has a spot, especially loose items that can become projectiles in case of a sudden stop.  
• Be prepared for the unexpected. Pack an emergency kit with first-aid supplies, water, snacks, blankets, jumper cables, and flares. Make sure your phone is fully charged – and keep a charger in the car – to call AAA or request roadside assistance digitally if your battery dies, you lock yourself out, or you need a tow.

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.   

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.  

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of May 27, 2024.   

Because AAA forecasts focus on domestic leisure travel only, comparisons to TSA passenger screening numbers should not be made. TSA data includes all passengers traveling on both domestic and international routes. Additionally, TSA screens passengers each time they enter secured areas of the airport, therefore each one-way trip is counted as a passenger tally. AAA focuses on person-trips, which include the full round-trip travel itinerary. As a result, direct comparisons of AAA forecast volumes and daily TSA screenings represent different factors.  

*Independence Day Holiday Travel Period   

For this forecast, the Independence Day holiday travel period is defined as the nine-day period from Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, July 7. Historically, the Independence Day holiday period included only one weekend. This is the first year the Independence Day holiday travel period is a longer timeframe with two weekends included.

Yes, you can purchase/ renew multiple insurance policies/ takaful certificate via CarInsure but only the first policy/certificate is entitled for the Cashback, subject to the Promotion Terms and Conditions.

Are there any capping/limitations to this promotion?

The Cashback is only limited to the first 2,000 comprehensive policies/certificates throughout the Promotion Period based on a “first come, first served” basis.
