Touring with Le Petit Train in Cannes, France

Cannes is a fabulous town on the French Riviera that deserves a stop on your itinerary! During my planning, I kept knocking Cannes down on my list to make room for other towns like Villefranche-sur-Mer and Menton. And while those towns certainly deserve a spot on your trip, the moment I arrived in Cannes I could not believe I almost didn’t make it here! Cannes is the epitome of the French Riviera: charm, wealth, and scenic beauty, with a splash of Old Hollywood glamor! Even though I only had a few hours to spend in Cannes, I was so impressed and overwhelmed by this former fishing town. Since my time was so short, I decided to book a tour to make sure I got to experience it all. Le Petit Train Tour in Cannes gave me that opportunity, and more!

train tour cannes

About the Tour

Le Petit Train in Cannes offers three different tours : History Tour, Croissette Tour, and the Big Tour. The History Tour will take you through the Old Town of Cannes, while the Corissette Tour will showcase some of the Cannes-style glamor. The Big Tour, however, covers it all. For that reason, that is the one I chose! In the summer months, the train leaves regularly from 9 am until 11 pm. However, since I visited in March (the low-season), the last tour departed at 4 pm. I also appreciated that the tour was offered in a variety of languages, so I could truly appreciate everything that I was seeing. Headsets are available on the train and are offered in French, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Arabic or Chinese.

Joining the Tour

To join the tour, simply arrive at the starting point here , right near the Palais des Festivals and Cannes Walk of Fame. In my experience, there was no need to book ahead. However, if you are visiting in peak season, it might be wise to arrive early as a line may form. There is a minimum of 10 people required for each tour, so we did end up waiting around for a few minutes past the hour for others to join. Thankfully, when we got up to 8 people, our guide took us out anyway! Prior to departing, you will pay your guide the €14 cash admission and you will be on your way!

Le Palais des Festivals, La Croisette, and Famous Hotels

Once it’s time for Le Petit Train in Cannes to head off, you make your way down Boulevard de La Croisette . This promenade is hugs the Med and is so beautiful and scenic. Right near the starting point of the train, you’ll pass by Le Palais des Festivals . This is where the iconic Cannes Film Festival is held each year! When I visited, there was a bit of construction going on as they prepared for the festival to start in mid-May. However, whenever there was a construction fence set up, they had posters put up on them of celebrities at the CFF throughout the years. I actually loved looking at these and trying to identify celebs. As you continue on, on your right, you’ll pass by gorgeous beaches such as Croisette Beach and Zamenhof Beach . On your left, you’ll get to see luxury shopping stores and iconic hotels such as the Hotel Martinez and the Carlton Hotel . These hotels were swoon worthy and I can only dream of staying at either of these hotels one day! You’ll also get to see the famous Palm Beach and gawk at the boats parked in the Cannes Yacht Club .

Place de l’Étang

Place de l’Étang was one of the more interesting sights along the tour, and one that sparked a very weird rabbit hole of Googling for me. When we passed by on our Friday afternoon tour, the square was packed with locals playing some unknown game with silver balls. It looked kind of like bocce, but it wasn’t quite that. Enter: the game of pétanque ! According to Wikipedia, “In pétanque the objective is to score points by having boules closer to the target than the opponent after all boules have been thrown.” So, pretty close to bocce. I can’t explain why seeing this on the tour really struck me, but I loved seeing the square filled with so many people coming together to play a local sport. Learning more about the game reminded me how much I love traveling and learning about different cultures and traditions. If you’re lucky enough to be on Le Petit Train tour in Cannes on a Friday afternoon, keep your eyes peeled! I’m also dying to join a pétanque league now!

train tour cannes

Rue d’Antibes

As the train made its way back around through town, we cruised down the famous Rue d’Antibes. While the street itself runs for over 11 km, this short stretch through the city center is the heartbeat of Cannes. It is a shopping haven! Home to over 800 stores, I loved getting to practice my window shopping from the train. There are a ton of variety of shops. You can find more affordable brands like Zara and Levi’s, or higher end luxuries like Rolex. It’s not a far walk from the ending location of Le Petit Train, so I actually came back here for a stroll after my tour and picked up some chocolate treats for myself at nearby Jeff de Bruges .

train tour cannes

Le Suquet is the name of Cannes’ Old Town and is unbelievably charming. The street is lined with old homes, all different shades of pastel. The cotton candy vibes were unmatched! The roads were cobblestone, and steep as we made our way up to the top of the hill. Since the train was chugging uphill, the ride was slower than when we were cruising through town. Which made for the prime opportunities to take photos of the homes! The juxtaposition of driving through La Suquet after touring through the new part of town and passing high-end hotels and stores was not lost on me. It was dreamy!

train tour cannes

Free Time at Château de la Castre

The absolute best part of the tour however, was getting up to the Château de la Castre ! Le Petit Train parked in an open area and gave us about 10-15 minutes of free time to explore and take photos. I absolutely loved the views from this point that overlooked the port, Le Suquet, and beyond! The Église Notre-Dame d’Espérance and Château de la Castre are both beautiful buildings to quickly stroll around and take photographs. Also nearby is the famous Cannes sign ! Take a selfie to prove to your friends back home that you actually went to Cannes!

Back to Town

Finally, it was time to wrap up the tour and make our way back into town. The train made its way down the mountain and back through Le Suquet. You’ll drive down Quai Saint-Pierre and Prom. de la Pentiero, both which hug the Old Port of Cannes . We drove past fabulous people sitting on their fabulous yachts soaking up the fabulous sunshine. But I’m not jealous. The train ended at the same place as pickup , and then I made my way back to the train station just in time for sunset. Le Petit Train Tour in Cannes was the perfect way to see the city on tight time constraints!

Planning out the perfect one day in Cannes itinerary is one of the highlights of visiting France’s gorgeous Côte d’Azur. The beauty of the French Riviera is that it’s convenient to visit multiple cities in one trip, whether you have your own transport or rely on the excellent public transport links.

Located in the South of France, Cannes is a city perched on the glistening Mediterranean coast. Famous for the Cannes Film Festival, held in May, this city is world-renowned for its glitz and glamour. However, Cannes is not all red carpets, celebrities, luxury yachts and designer boutiques.

It’s also home to a wide range of watersports, traditional markets, sandy beaches and incredible seafood restaurants Cannes is a destination that should be on everybody’s list.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Cannes?

Before we dive into the itinerary, you may be wondering how many days to spend in Cannes. The city is smaller than neighbouring Nice, but there is plenty to do. You could easily spend 2 days in Cannes at a more relaxed pace but a day trip will give you enough time to visit the main attractions.

Seeing Cannes in one day is plenty of time to enjoy the best of this vibrant city. Grab your morning coffee at the Gare de Nice-Ville train station and before you know it, the short 35-minute journey will be over.

If you are considering taking a Cannes day trip from Nice, it’s important to carefully plan your day to make the most of your time in this bustling city.

You can tick off the top spots in just one day but don’t forget to keep an eye on the train timetables, it’s easy to lose track of time in such a vibrant city.

Beautiful Cannes

Getting To & Around Cannes

Base yourself in Nice for easy access to Cannes, Antibes, Saint-Tropez and many more. For those with limited time in the South of France, the easiest city to visit as a day trip from Nice is its glamorous neighbour, Cannes.

Nice and Cannes are close neighbours, just 30 km apart, travelling between them is affordable, quick and easy. There are 4 main ways to get to Cannes from Nice, by train, bus, personal vehicle or an organised tour.

The train is the most efficient way to get to Cannes. Taking just 35 minutes, the trains leave Gare de Nice-Ville station every 40 minutes or so. The last train back to Nice leaves at 10pm so you can really make the most of the evening in Cannes before heading back to your hotel. You can view train schedules here.

There are also direct buses that you can take from Nice to Cannes which take around 30-40 minutes. Keep in mind that this option is not as frequent as the train.  You can view bus schedules here.

If you are on a tight budget, you can take a city bus for a very low fee but be aware, it can take much longer to reach your destination due to all the stops and the traffic along the way. Allow at least an hour and a half to make this journey.

Whilst you don’t need a car to make the most of the French Riviera, if you have one with you in Nice you can drive to Cannes in just 40 minutes.

The downside of driving your own vehicle is, of course, the parking. There are a number of enclosed multi-storey car parks around Cannes so you will be able to find a space but at €3-4 an hour, this is one of the more expensive options. You can browse rental car options here.

Although you will end up with less time to explore Cannes itself, taking an organised tour is an excellent way to see the French Riviera. One option is this full-day tour that visits Cannes along with other stops on the Cotes d’Azur, such as Èze, Monaco , Antibes and Saint-Paul de Vence

Once you have arrived in Cannes, it is easy to navigate between the main attractions on foot. For example, walking from the Croisette to Le Suquet is only 600m and the ferry across to Lérins Islands is just at the start of the iconic boulevard.

There are also dedicated cycle lanes throughout the city and hiring a bike is a popular way to get around. However, if you are only here for one day, you won’t need to venture away from the city centre so navigating on foot is the best option.

If you happen to have more time in Cannes and want to explore the outskirts of the city there is an extensive network of affordable shuttle buses. These shuttle buses cover the main hotspots in and around the city and can be an extremely affordable way to take a sightseeing tour.

There is even a convertible shuttle bus that runs along the Croisette if you want to see the sights with the wind in your hair for a low price.

One-Day Cannes Itinerary

There are so many things to do in Cannes and it has something for everyone, whether you are there to soak up the glitz and glamour or enjoy the neighbouring haven of the Lérins Islands.

Promenade de la Croisette

Kick off your one day in Cannes with the iconic Promenade de la Croisette (also known as the Boulevard de la Croisette), famously home to the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, where the Cannes Film Festival is held.

Under the shade of pine and palm trees, this boardwalk stretches for 3 km along the golden sands, coastline, Vieux Port and azure sea of the Mediterranean.

However you arrive in Cannes, the famous Promenade de la Croisette is easy to reach on foot. Cannes train station is mere 350 metres north of the iconic boulevard and there are bus stops along the seafront. The Croisette is the perfect place to soak in the atmosphere of Cannes.

The street itself is dotted with designer boutiques, chic rooftop bars, modern restaurants and hotels fit for A-list celebrities.

Of course, make sure to stop off at a local pastry shop to grab a Tarte Tropezienne, a famous pastry originating from the French Riviera. Consisting of halved brioche filled with lemon and vanilla pastry cream and topped with a generous helping of sugar. Perhaps a more decadent breakfast option but one you will certainly never forget.

If you’re a film buff, don’t miss a stop by the Palais des Festivals, which is where the Cannes Film Festival takes place every year. You can take a picture on the famous red carpet and see the handprints of movie stars outside the building.

Boulevard de la Croisette in Cannes

Next, head into the heart of the picturesque old town of Cannes, known as Le Suquet. This historic district full of winding cobbled streets is perched on a hill with far-reaching views across the sea. You can also get a lovely view of Cannes itself here.

Wander through the local markets, nestled amongst the traditional buildings. Discover beautifully handmade crafts and souvenirs, including one of the oldest shops in Cannes, the Tesi hat shop.

There are beautiful winding streets to explore and also some interesting historic sites, such as the lovely Église Notre-Dame d’Espérance – a beautiful 17-Century church.

Le Suquet is full of charming restaurants and cafes so this is the perfect spot to stop off for some lunch. Try Le Troquet à Soupes on Rue du Marché Forville for some of the city’s best soups and light bites. This affordable lunch spot is a journey through French cuisine, the owner will happily take you through the dishes, ingredients and the story of the local ingredients used.

The French onion soup is incredibly moreish and they even do a vegan version.

Notre-Dame de l'Esperance Church in Cannes

Museum of World Explorations

After lunch, head over to the Museum of World Explorations (formerly known as the Musée de la Castre) situated atop the Suquet hill, this museum dominates the city of Cannes.

Climbing up the mediaeval tower rewards visitors with breathtaking vistas of the bay across to the Lérins islands. A remarkable assortment of paintings, artworks, and archaeological artefacts awaits visitors inside the castle and the adjacent chapel.

The museum boasts an extensive collection of antiquities, with a particular focus on artefacts from the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Don’t miss the iconic Cannes sign for a photo as you wander back into the city.

Lérins Islands

A trip to Cannes would not be complete without a visit to the Lérins Islands. This natural oasis is an archipelago made up of 4 islands, 2 of which you can visit from Cannes.

Sainte Marguerite with a military fortress now housing a museum or Saint Honorat, home to an active 5th-century monastery where you can sample the wine and liquors produced by the monks who inhabit the island. A budget-friendly 15-minute ferry crossing will whisk you away to another world, away from the hustle and bustle. You can buy tickets here .

Sainte Marguerite is the larger of the two islands, offering meandering trails through the fragrant pine and eucalyptus forests and out to hidden rocky coves. This is the perfect place to discover your own corner of the Mediterranean for a quick dip in the glistening waters or a picnic on the rocks.

The island has a rich history to discover within Fort Royal, home to the Royal Musee de la Mer. This 17th-century fort is famous for housing the ‘Man in the Iron Mask’ – a prisoner during the time of Louis XIV. You may already know the story from the 1998 film, The Man in the Iron Mask with Leonardo Dicaprio.

Saint Honorat is the second largest island in the archipelago, inhabited for several centuries by the monks of the Lérins Abbey who devote themselves to prayer and the production of wine, liqueurs and olive oil.

You can enter the fortified monastery free of charge but it is highly recommended to take a guided tour of the vineyards and chapel ruins before participating in a wine tasting. There are 7 world-renowned wines produced here using ancient methods. It’s a wine-tasting tour unlike any other.

Fort Royal on Sainte-Marguerite Island

Evening in Cannes

After a busy day exploring the city and its surroundings, it’s time for some well-earned dinner. After alighting from the ferry, stroll back along the Croisette in the golden evening light to discover some of the fresh seafood Cannes is known for.

Dining along the Croisette is a truly unforgettable experience. This iconic promenade is lined with some of the best restaurants in the world boasting unrivalled views across the shore of the Cotes d’Azur.

Cannes is known for its vibrant nightlife, an energetic city that never sleeps. You can follow dinner by visiting one of the many chic rooftop bars and clubs along the Croisette before heading back to Nice.

Have 2 to 3 days in Cannes?

If you are lucky enough to have more time in Cannes, you can soak in this city at a more relaxed pace. Although we have covered the highlights in just one day, with extra time you will be able to enjoy the hidden gems as well as the must see attractions.

Marché Forville, Cannes’ large covered produce market is just a stone’s throw from the Croisette boulevard. The sights and smells alone are a sensory adventure. You can find fresh fruits and vegetables, locally caught fish and of course, pop up vendors selling delightful street food.

Take a beach day, relax beside the sea with a good book and a glass of rosé. There are two options for lounging on the beach along the Croisette, find one of the public beaches in Cannes or visit a private beach club (such as the Carlton Beach Club).

Both have their own pros and cons but if you really want to experience Cannes, you can rent a sunlounger, towel and an umbrella from a beach club for €30-€40 per day. Although this may seem like an unnecessary expense, it comes with the added benefit of the beach club food and drinks brought directly to you.

All you need to do is soak in the golden sunshine, take a dip in the Mediterranean sea and unwind.

You could also give watersports a go. There are plenty of options for watersports along the beachfront, from kayaking and paddleboarding to jet skiing and snorkelling. Hire a boat for the day to explore the hidden coves and sandy beaches along the coast or get the adrenaline pumping and try out parasailing.

Activities range from full-day excursions to hire by the hour so there is something to suit every budget.

It comes as no surprise that Cannes is known for its theatre scene. Visit Les Arcades Cinema or Cinema Olympia to catch the latest Hollywood blockbuster or perhaps enjoy an independent French film.

Sandy beaches in Cannes

Where to Stay in Cannes

Villa Claudia Hotel Cannes – Located in the centre of Cannes, this 3-star hotel is an excellent place to stay in this coastal French town. There are several rooms of varying sizes available, daily breakfast and a gorgeous private garden to enjoy.

Hotel Splendid – This upmarket hotel is an excellent choice for those who are looking for a luxury stay in Cannes and aren’t too concerned about their budget. There are a number of lovely rooms to choose from along with all of the amenities you would expect from this type of hotel.

La Bastide de l’Oliveraie – This is another excellent luxury option in Cannes, particularly if you’re looking to stay in a suite rather than a standard room. There are lots of choices of rooms and suites which all come with spa access.

Not quite what you’re looking for? Click here to browse more Cannes hotels!

Cannes offers something entirely different to Nice whether that is for a day trip or a long weekend. If you can visit both cities during one trip, you will gain an entirely new perspective of the incredibly varied, Côtes d’Azur.

Start:  Puno End:  Cuzco Departs: Three times a week Distance:  241 miles (388km) Duration:  10 hours

Traversing the Altiplano, from the shores of Lake Titicaca to the bustling heart of the ancient Incan empire, the railway from Puno to Cuzco cuts a ponderous but picturesque path through the snow-dusted peaks and voluptuous valleys of the Andes, across the epic Peruvian plains , passing hardy bowler-hatted llama farmers and traveling through remote towns and villages.

4. The Beijing-to-Lhasa Express, China

Start:   Beijing End:   Lhasa Departs: Daily Distance:  2330 miles (3750km) Duration:  40 hours

From the futuristic architecture and imperial wonders of Beijing, the Z21 train transports its passengers from the neon lights of urban China  across the Tibetan plateau , where it glides past grazing yaks, fluttering prayer flags, snow-capped mountains and boundless blue skies. At your destination, magenta-robed monks await.

A Kiwirail TranzAlpine train arriving in Arthur’s Pass station, Arthur’s Pass National Park, South Island, New Zealand

5. The TranzAlpine, New Zealand

Start:   Christchurch End:  Greymouth Departs: Daily Distance:   139 miles (223km) Duration:  4hrs 30mins

Under five hours, this journey is surely one the world’s finest and most scenic one-day train rides. Commence the TranzAlpine experience in Christchurch, before speeding along the Canterbury Plains and climbing quickly through the snow-capped mountains of the Southern Alps, then descend through a thrilling tunnel to emerge among the lakes, streams and rainforests of the South Island ’s West Coast.

6. The Bergensbanen, Norway

Start:  Oslo End:   Bergen Departs: Four times a day Distance:  308 miles (496km) Duration:   6hrs 30mins

This astonishing train is one of Europe’s best railway rides  – and one of the least well known outside of Norway . It covers the spectrum of the Nordic country’s natural splendor: climbing canyons, crossing rivers, burrowing through mountainsides and traversing barren icescapes.

A train travels on a high track over a valley in a lush forest.

7. Tazara Railway, Tanzania and Zambia

Start:  Dar es Salaam End:  Kapiri Mposhi Departs: Twice a week Distance:  1160 miles (1860km) Duration:   46 hours

Few trains in the world offer the chance – and we should point out that it’s a chance rather than a guarantee – of spotting big game from your seat. The Tazara ( Tanzania and Zambia Railway Authority) does just that. The highlight, though, is the chance to spend two days watching everyday life out of the window, and enjoying the clamor and chaos when the train pulls to a halt – scheduled or unscheduled.

8. The Sunset Limited, USA

Start:   New Orleans End: Los Angeles Departs: Three times per week  Distance: 1995 miles (3211km)  Duration:  Two days

The ultimate American railroad ride: east to west, coast to coast, clean through from the bars of New Orleans to the breakers of the Pacific Ocean. If you’ve always dreamed of crossing the States, but don’t much relish the prospect of two weeks spent cooped up in an automobile, then a ride on the Sunset Limited is the answer. Sit back and let America’s landscapes buzz by: from Louisiana’s bayous, past the high-rises of Houston, across the deserts of Texas and Arizona , over the Californian hills all the way to LA’s golden beaches. Saddle up, partner: it’s gonna be quite a ride.

The Caledonian Sleeper train crosses Rannoch Viaduct on the scenic West Highland Line railway in the Scottish Highlands.

9. The Caledonian Sleeper, UK

Start:  London (Euston) End:   Fort William Departs: Daily Distance:  509 miles (819km) Duration:  13hrs 30mins

Segueing from the sooty suburbs and crowded concrete-lined cul-de-sacs of central London to the crisp air and soaring vistas of the Scottish Highlands via one overnight train journey epitomizes the romance of rail travel. Enjoy the buffet-car banter, be lulled to sleep by the rhythm of the rails, then wake up to bedside views of towering granite peaks.

10. Mombasa to Nairobi, Kenya

Start: Mombasa Ends:  Nairobi Departs: Daily Distance:  360 miles (579km) Duration:  5hrs 10mins

The Nairobi–Mombasa railway route is among Africa’s most legendary: it even helped foster the modern concept of safari. The rickety old railway has undergone a rebuild in recent years with smart new stations and a new track laid across the Kenyan savannah . What hasn’t changed is the spellbinding journey, with trains departing from Mombasa and passing in the shadow of Kilimanjaro to the cusp of the Great Rift Valley.

11. Tangier to Marrakesh, Morocco

Start:   Tangier End:  Marrakesh Departs: Daily Distance:  360 miles (580km) Duration:  5hrs 15mins

Nothing can fully prepare you for the magnificence Morocco ’s most evocative city – from the clamor and spectacle of the central square, Djemaa El Fna , to the primary colors of the Jardin Majorelle ; and from the peaceful madrassa of Medersa Ben Youssef to the mad profusion of alleyways. There’s no doubting that a railway journey down the spine of this North African nation is a profoundly uplifting experience.

People sit in the observation desk of a train looking out at the Rocky Mountains.

12. The Rocky Mountaineer, Canada

Start:   Vancouver End:   Banff Departs: Twice a week Distance:  594 miles (957km) Duration:  37 hours

Clattering across the wild Rocky Mountains along a pioneering 19th-century railroad, this train journey is all at once a geological field trip, sightseeing adventure and wildlife safari. It promises cinematic views of Canada ’s quintessential mountain landscapes, plus a bevy of engineering marvels, from dizzying bridges to logic-defying tunnels. And with luck, you might even spy a bald eagle, moose or grizzly bear.

13. Alexandria to Aswan, Egypt

Start:   Alexandria End:  Aswan Departs: Daily Distance:  670 miles (1100km) Duration:  16 hours

A ride from Alexandria to Aswan means you will travel the length of Egypt 's rail network – and also undertake an odyssey in the company of the great Nile River , with chances to disembark and explore the relics of empires along its banks . Do keep in mind that, for all their plus points, Egyptian trains are not always known for punctuality.

14. The Serra Verde Express, Brazil

Start:   Curitiba End:  Morretes,  Paraná Departs: Daily Distance:  42 miles (68km) Duration:  3hrs 30mins

One of Brazil ’s most spectacular train journeys, the Serra Verde Express starts in the architecturally bold city of Curitiba and winds its way through dramatic mountain passes covered with tropical rainforest before it drops you in Morretes in the lush state of Paraná. The half-day trip takes in canyons, jagged mountain peaks and verdant lowlands, and the slow-going locomotive allows plenty of opportunities to photograph the cinematic backdrop while traversing some 30 bridges and chugging through 14 tunnels. Aside from the captivating scenery, the journey provides a fascinating glimpse into the past as it trundles through tiny stations dating back to the late 1800s.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway passes by produce venders in the town of Ghum, West Bengal, India

15. The Darjeeling Toy Train, India

Start:   New Jalpaiguri End:   Darjeeling Departs: Daily Distance:  55 miles (88.5km) Duration:  7–8 hours

India ’s narrow-gauge steam railways are the stuff of legend, and the bottle-blue Darjeeling Toy Train is the nation’s lead engine. The ride from the Bengal plains to Darjeeling travels past emerald-green tea plantations and precariously balanced, tin-roofed townships, while clouds tumble down the looming massif of Mt Khangchendzonga. Steam engines are now only used for a small section of the route, yet this iconic mountain journey still serves up a sizable slice of history.

16. The Hokkaidō Shinkansen, Japan

Start:  Tokyo End:  Hakodate Departs: Daily Distance:  512 miles (824km) Duration:  4 hours

The Hokkaidō Shinkansen , one of Japan’s iconic bullet trains , takes you from Tokyo to Hakodate, the southern port of Hokkaidō . Along the way, it zooms past picturesque scenes of rural Japan , through mountains and under the sea. The route is only part of it, though: riding the shinkansen – with its food trolleys and staff who bow upon entering and exiting the train car – is a classic Japanese experience.

A smiling woman looks out from a train window as it travel on a picturesque railroad in Sri Lanka

17. Colombo to Badulla, Sri Lanka

Start:  Colombo End:  Badulla Departs: Daily Distance:  181 miles (292km) Duration:  9–10 hours

One of many unforgettable things about Sri Lanka is the variety and intensity of the color green throughout the year . And for train aficionados, there is no better way to appreciate the country’s full, verdant spectrum than an all-day rail journey from Colombo’s urban gardens at sea level to tea plantations in the Hill Country , via brain-spinning sensory doses of jungle and forest, paddy field and palm tree, mountain and valley, national parks…and human habitation, too. Expect to move slowly – and enjoy one of the most scenic train trips in the world.

18. Bangkok to Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore

Start:   Bangkok End:  Singapore Departs: Weekly Distance:  1200 miles (1900km) Duration: Three days

A railway journey from Bangkok to Singapore spans three countries, three capital cities, and – without disembarking once – can be completed in under three days. But to go so fast would be to miss the point of this artery along the Malay Peninsula – a line suited to capricious roaming. You always have the option to hop off – to see tropical islands, to scale the cool heights of tea plantations, and to linger in a trio of metropolises that are each entirely different.

A train enters a tunnel in a snowy landscape in Switzerland.

19. The Glacier Express, Switzerland

Start:  St Moritz End:  Zermatt Departs: Daily (in season) Distance:  180 miles (290km) Duration:  8 hours

Switzerland is a nation of rail fanatics . And if the Swiss could pick one definitive ride, the honor would surely go to the Glacier Express . This eight-hour journey from ritzy St Moritz to Matterhorn-topped Zermatt unzips the lovely Alpine terrain in the country’s south, corkscrewing up to wind-battered mountain passes, teetering across 291 bridges and rumbling through 91 tunnels. It intentionally moves at a snail’s pace so you take in those out-of-this-world views of meadows, forest, falls and mountains – all through panoramic windows.

20. The Bernina Express, Switzerland & Italy

Start:   Chur End:  Tirano Departs: Daily Distance:  96 miles (156km) Duration:  4hrs 30mins

We can wax lyrical about the glacier-capped mountains, waterfall-draped ravines, jewel-colored lakes and endless spruce forests glimpsed through panoramic windows on Switzerland’s Bernina Express – but seeing is believing. Rolling from Chur in Graubünden to Tirano in northern Italy , this narrow-gauge train often tops polls of the world’s most beautiful rail journeys. The line has even made UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites – and with good reason.

A wagon conductor transports passengers' luggage for hotel transfer on the Orient Express.

21. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, England, France, Switzerland and Italy

Start:  London End:  Venice Departs: One to six times per month Distance:  1300 miles (2090km) Duration:  Two days

The promise of traveling from London to Venice cocooned in luxury while sitting in twinkly dining cars with fine china and silver cutlery is surely one that endures in the hearts of all rail enthusiasts. While the Orient Express’ various other 20th-century routes are sadly long gone, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express offers a tantalizing sample of the original on a trip that is surely the best journey back in time ever. But this route gained a new rival in 2023 with the Orient Express La Dolce Vita service  – and, in 2025, a new service on the original route is scheduled to hit the rails .

22. Nova Gorica to Jesenice, Slovenia

Start:  Nova Gorica End:   Jesenice Departs:  Daily Distance:  55 miles (89km) Duration:  Two hours

Here is a near-perfect railway adventure that most people have never heard of. The Bohinj Railway connects two places whose significance can be lost to modern travelers. An unassuming regional train rattling out of a faded-grandeur halt on the Italy– Slovenia border doesn’t even hint at what’s to come. The journey is a spectacular tour of Slovenia’s upland highlights from Nova Gorica, climbing through mountain towns and villages along the Soča River , passing through superb Alpine scenery close to Lake Bohinj , and on past world-famous Lake Bled to Jesenice.

A train winds through an outback landscape in Australia.

23. The Ghan, Australia

Start:   Adelaide End:  Darwin Departs: Twice a week Distance:   1851 miles (2979km) Duration:  54 hours

Cutting vertically across the Outback heart of Australia , straight through the desolate deserts of the Red Centre, the Ghan is one of the southern hemisphere’s most unforgettable train journeys. This cross-country train service has provided a vital link between Australia’s north and south coasts, traveling north across the country from well-to-do, orderly Adelaide to the tropical, croc-filled creeks of Darwin. Luxurious and legendary, it’s Australia’s elegant version of the Orient Express.

24. Cannes to Menton, France

Start:   Cannes End:  Menton Departs: Daily Distance:  34 miles (55km) Duration:  1hr 20mins

It’s the stuff that travel dreams are made of: a slow train skirting the French Mediterranean coast, through towns whose very names resonate with glamour – Cannes, Antibes , Monaco . On one side of the tracks lies that sparkling sea; on the other, dramatic cliffs interspersed with the gorgeous coastal towns of the French Riviera . You can make a long day of this short trip, hopping on and off to explore a street market, linger at an outdoor terrace, take a breath of history and get a taste of luxury.

Dramatic. Conniving. Fame-seeking. If you turn on many reality TV shows today, these are some of the descriptors that may come to mind when thinking about the cast members.

The team behind Netflix’s “ Love Is Blind ” makes sure that the people they choose to go through the experiment are quite the opposite of those unflattering adjectives.

Related Stories

Xbox dominated summer game fest — but game pass remains tricky bet, ice spice’s debut album, ‘y2k,’ finally arrives next month, popular on variety.

Over the past six seasons, 11 couples have tied the knot , nine of whom are still together.

While people can apply to be on the show, “Love Is Blind” casting begins with a local search within a 50-mile radius from the city of choice. And then the outreach begins.

“Outreach is essential because we have to get the word out on a local level. We want reporters, politicians, realtors, salon owners, pastors, nurses, teachers and everyone in between,” says Donna Driscoll, exec VP of casting and talent for Kinetic Content. “We want there to be a huge buzz around the city that we’re there and we’re looking for singles who are ready for a deep and meaningful relationship and marriage.”

Coelen notes it is essential for them to find people who wouldn’t necessarily apply. “We want to make that tent as big as possible, to get as broad a cross-section of people as possible,” he says. “Then we put everybody through the same process and same filter as we narrow down the pool of people.”

As the show has become more popular, there are more applicants, which just means more work to find people who are “there for the right reasons.”

“I always encourage the team to get on the phone and talk to people about the fact that we’re in their city,” says Driscoll. For about two weeks, the casting team focuses on outreach. “Once we develop a relationship with people over the phone, if they find or think of somebody in their life that they want to nominate, they have a direct line to our team, and we have cast people out of that step.”

One of the most exciting parts for Driscoll is that this can “expand the idea of what a candidate for reality television might look like or do for a living.” The show has cast scientists, geologists, lawyers, engineers and tech executives.

What you won’t see? Influencers.

“Influencers and actors are off the table,” she says. “I want the people to come in and feel very authentic and raw — and that’s not to say that an influencer, model or actor could not do that. But I want to steer clear of getting somebody into the pod, as much as I possibly can, for the wrong reasons. With somebody who is an influencer … I’m really hesitant to go down that road just because I want to make sure that their heart is in the right place.”

After the phone interviews, which includes questions about relationship deal-breakers, the casting team moves along to Zoom interviews — sometimes one-on-one and other times, with four or five people — that can last up to 90 minutes. Here, potential cast members discuss everything, including past relationships.

Sometimes, things slip through. In Season 5, it was revealed that Lydia Gonzalez and Uche Okoroha had briefly dated before coming on the show. But there was no way the casting team could have known since there was no paper trail.

“We are so diligent from the get-go. We cross-reference Instagram accounts — three times — to make sure there’s no connection between handles,” says Driscoll. In fact, “time and time again,” they’ve had to call potential candidates and tell them they couldn’t move forward because of an Instagram connection. “Lydia and Uche did not have a committed relationship.”

That checking will continue, as will trusting cast members as much as possible without going through their phones or direct messages.

During the Season 6 reunion, it was revealed that cast member Trevor Sova had a girlfriend at home — something he hid from casting.

“We did our due diligence with every single step,” Driscoll assures. “The thing that makes me upset is that it took someone else’s spot who could have been there for the right reasons.”

“When we get them on the phone for the final call, we always ask, ‘Is there anything that you haven’t told us that we need to know specifically about your relationships?’” she explains. “We give them several opportunities to tell us the truth, and we know they’re human. We’re also human … We have to trust that all of what they’re telling us is true. Will all of our eyes be a lot more open after Trevor? Absolutely.”
