From an epistemological perspective, scientific research may be defined along a continuum from theoretical to experimental. The former consists of fitting together different visionary ideas to form a conceptual framework. The latter, a deductive approach, entails the objective observation of phenomena which occur in a relatively controlled situation.

The purpose of experimental research is to examine the cause of certain phenomena, establishing a cause to effect relationship among variables. To accomplish this, it includes the formulation of a hypothesis, a variable that can be manipulated, and variables that can be measured, calculated, and compared, in a relatively controlled environment. In social sciences, experiments consist of participants being subjected to some treatment or condition, to measure some outcome of interest. It is to test whether differences in this outcome are related to the treatment or condition.

Elephant tourism often involves cruelty. Here are steps toward more humane, animal-friendly excursions

Suju Kali is a 50-year-old elephant in Nepal who has been carrying tourists for over 30 years. Like many elephants I encounter through my research , Suju Kali exhibits anxiety and can be aggressive toward strangers. She suffers from emotional trauma as a result of prolonged, commercial human contact.

Like Suju Kali, many animals are trapped within the tourism industry . Some venues have no oversight and little concern for animal or tourist safety. Between 120,000 and 340,000 animals are used globally in a variety of wildlife tourism attractions, including endangered species like elephants. Over a quarter of the world's endangered elephants reside in captivity with little oversight.

Wildlife tourism—which involves viewing wildlife such as primates or birds in conservation areas, feeding or touching captive or "rehabilitated" wildlife in facilities, and bathing or riding animals like elephants—is tricky business . I know this because I am a researcher studying human relationships with elephants in both tourism and conservation settings within Southeast Asia.

These types of experiences have long been an extremely popular and profitable part of the tourism market . But now, many travel-related organizations are urging people not to participate in, or calling for an outright ban on, interactive wildlife experiences .

Tourism vendors have started marketing more "ethical options" for consumers. Some are attempting to truly improve the health and welfare of wildlife, and some are transitioning captive wildlife into touch-free, non-riding or lower-stress environments. In other places, organizations are attempting to implement standards of care or create manuals that outline good practices for animal husbandry.

This marketing, academics argue, is often simply " greenwashing ," applying marketing labels to make consumers feel better about their choices without making any real changes. Worse, research shows that some programs marketing themselves as ethical tourism may instead be widening economic gaps and harming both humans and other species that they are meant to protect.

No quick fix

For example, rather than tourist dollars trickling down to local struggling families as intended by local governments , many tourism venues are owned by nonresidents, meaning the profits do not stay in the area . Likewise, only a small number of residents can afford to own tourism venues, and venues do not provide employment for locals from lower income groups.

This economic gap is especially obvious in Nepalese elephant stables: Venue owners continue to make money off elephants, while elephant caregivers continue to work 17 hours a day for about US$21 a month; tourists are led to believe they are " promoting sustainability ."

Yet, there are no easy answers, especially for elephants working in tourism. Moving them to sanctuaries is difficult because with no governmental or global welfare oversight, elephants may end up in worse conditions.

Many kindhearted souls who want to "help" elephants know little about their biology and mental health needs, or what it takes to keep them healthy. Also, feeding large animals like Suju Kali is pricey, costing around $19,000 yearly . So without profits from riding or other income, owners—or would-be rescuers—can't maintain elephants. Releasing captive elephants to the jungle is not a choice—many have never learned to live in the wild, so they cannot survive on their own.

Hurting local people

Part of the problem lies with governments, as many have marketed tourism as a way to fund conservation projects. For example in Nepal, a percentage of ticket sales from elephant rides are given to community groups to use for forest preservation and support for local families.

Increasing demand for wildlife-based tourism may increase traffic in the area and thus put pressure on local governments to further limit local people's access to forest resources.

This may also lead to increased demands on local communities , as was the case in Nepal. In the 1970s, the Nepalese government removed local people from their lands in what is now Chitwan National Park as part of increasing "conservation efforts" and changed the protected area's boundaries. Indigenous "Tharu," or people of the forest, were forced to abandon their villages and land. While some were offered access to " buffer zones " in the 1990s, many remain poor and landless today.

In addition, more and more desirable land surrounding conservation areas in Nepal is being developed for tourist-based businesses such as hotels, restaurants and shops, pushing local poor people farther away from central village areas and the associated tourism income.

Some activists would like humans to simply release all wildlife back into the wild, but there are multiple issues with that. Elephant habitats throughout Southeast Asia have been transformed into croplands, cities or train tracks for human use. Other problems arise from the fact that tourism elephants have never learned how to be elephants in their natural elements, as they were separated from their herds at an early age.

So tourism may be vital to providing food, care and shelter to captive elephants for the rest of their lives and providing jobs for those who really need them. Because elephants can live beyond 60 years, this can be a large commitment.

How to be an ethical tourist

To protect elephants, tourists should check out reviews and photos from any venue they want to visit, and look for clues that animal welfare might be impacted, such as tourists allowed to feed, hold or ride captive wildlife animals. Look for healthy animals, which means doing research on what "healthy" animals of that species should look like.

If a venue lists no-touch demonstrations—"unnatural" behaviors that don't mimic what an elephant might do of their own accord, such as sitting on a ball or riding a bike, or other performances—remember that the behind-the-scenes training used to achieve these behaviors can be violent, traumatic or coercive .

Another way to help people and elephant is to to use small, local companies to book your adventures in your area of interest, rather than paying large, international tourism agencies. Look for locally owned hotels, and wait to book excursions until you arrive so you can use local service providers. Book homestay programs and attend cultural events led by community members; talk to tourists and locals you meet in the target town to get their opinions, and use local guides who provide wildlife viewing opportunities while maintaining distance from animals .

Or tourists can ask to visit venues that are certified by international humane animal organizations and that do not allow contact with wildlife. Or they can opt for guided hikes, canoe or kayak experiences, and other environmentally friendly options.

While these suggestions will not guarantee that your excursion is animal-friendly, they will help decrease your impact on wildlife , support local families and encourage venues to stop using elephants as entertainment. Those are good first steps.

Building on the success of the inaugural grant scheme in 2023, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Zayed National Museum , the national museum of the UAE currently under construction on Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island , have launched the second round of the Zayed National Museum Research Fund. The fund continues to uphold the legacy of UAE Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan , while fostering research into the culture and history of the nation.

The Zayed National Museum Research Fund, with an annual allocation of AED1 million, is one of the most significant funding opportunities in the region. The funding scheme is designed to support new research on a range of aspects of UAE culture, heritage, history, and archaeology – including the enduring impact of Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed and the country’s intangible heritage such as oral traditions, stories, and songs.

With large and small grants available, the funding scheme aims to support both established and early career researchers and bolster a new generation of scholars specialising in the history of the UAE. Applications for the second round of funding are now open, inviting researchers from around the globe to contribute to the preservation, advancement of knowledge and understanding of the UAE’s heritage. Researchers can submit their applications before 20 July 2024, and grants will be announced in November.

Applications will be reviewed by a panel comprising representatives from Zayed National Museum and DCT Abu Dhabi, as well as external subject matter experts. The research projects will be assessed against criteria such as research methodology, experience, outcomes, and alignment with the museum's mandate.

The success of the inaugural grant scheme is reflected in the diverse pool of recipients, with 10 researchers selected from 77 applicants, representing 19 countries. Their projects shed light on various facets of UAE culture and history, contributing to a rich tapestry of scholarly works. Projects chosen in the inaugural year covered a broad spectrum, including Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed’s societal and cultural influence, historical ties between India and the Arabian Peninsula, and the role of women in Arabian Peninsula trade, among others.

His Excellency Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, Undersecretary of DCT Abu Dhabi, said: "After the resounding success of last year’s funding round, we are delighted to launch the second year of the Zayed National Museum Research Fund. Zayed National Museum is committed to building on the extensive body of scholarship on the rich history of the UAE and supporting both established researchers and those beginning their academic careers. It is an exciting time for research in the UAE, with a new wave of archaeological discovery and academic thinking. We hope this funding opportunity will help researchers follow their curiosity and unlock new understandings about the land and lives of the UAE.”

When you read about a new study, you may wonder: How accurate are these results? MIT economist Isaiah Andrews PhD ’14 often asks that as well, especially about social sciences research. Unlike most of us, though, Andrews’ job involves answering that question.

Andrews, a professor in MIT’s Department of Economics, is an expert in econometrics, the study of the methods used in economics. But the purpose of his specialty defies simple boundaries. After all, the point of refining research methods is to make applied studies better — and to better grasp their limits.

“There are many fields in economics that answer socially significant questions,” Andrews says. “There are things it would be good for us to understand, but I often find myself interested in how sure we are about them. To what extent do we know the things we think we know? To what extent is there more to know, based on the uncertainty and degree of confidence? These issues of uncertainty matter because the answers to the substantive questions matter.”

Andrews’ core contributions to economics very much involve uncertainty and confidence. He first became known for research on “weak identification,” settings where key variables do not yield much information about the issues being studied. And he has published notable work about the challenges of building economic models.

Andrews’ work also illuminates larger ideas about how we use data. His most recent published paper examines the “winner’s curse” in the social sciences — the idea that programs testing well one time are too often chosen for implementation, when sometimes they performed well purely by chance, and are likely to perform worse the next time they are tried out.

Another major Andrews paper, from 2019, analyzed how much publication bias exists in academic journals — which can lean toward publishing dramatic findings rather than equally valid null results, as replication studies, in part, can reveal.

At times, Andrews’ work seems like the social science equivalent of an X-ray machine: He scans studies to look for problems under the surface. But Andrews does not only look for problems; he develops techniques to prevent them in the first place. In typical Andrews fashion, his papers on the winner’s curse and on replication bias both offer new methods for avoiding these pitfalls.

“It’s important to work on these tools because the tools are going to be used on important things,” Andrews says. “If you have a beautiful tool and it’s never used, is it a tool, or a work of art?”

Andrews is recognized as a leading-edge practitioner in his field. In 2021, he was given the John Bates Clark Medal, awarded annually by the American Economic Association to the best economist under the age of 40. In 2020, he was granted a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship. With his career flourishing, Andrews rejoined the MIT faculty last year.

Career-changing conversation

Andrews grew up in the Boston area, in a family where both of his parents had earned PhDs in economics. While Andrews was not always set on becoming an economist, he did take advanced courses in the subject as an undergraduate at Yale University, where he graduated summa cum laude. He then entered the doctoral program at MIT.

At the time, in 2009, after the financial-sector meltdown and related recession, a lot of attention in economics was directed toward finance and macroeconomics, but Andrews did not feel compelled to study those topics.

“I didn’t feel they were such a good fit in terms of the style of work that appealed to me,” Andrews says. “I was finding econometrics-y questions very interesting.”

At one MIT Department of Economics function, Andrews started talking to Anna Mikusheva, an econometrician on the Institute faculty. By the end of the event, Mikusheva had suggested Andrews help with some research she was working on.

“The research assistant role for Anna turned into a joint project and I found my interest continuing to be drawn to these questions,” Andrews says. “So by virtue of that, that’s where my work went.”

Mikusheva and Andrews co-authored a high-profile series of papers on weak identification that wound up getting published soon after he received his PhD from the Institute in 2014. After spending a couple of years as a junior fellow in the Harvard Society of Fellows, Andrews joined the MIT faculty in 2016. He moved to Harvard University in 2018, then returned to MIT last summer.

As Andrews’ career has evolved, his wide-ranging work has often involved productive research partnerships, including papers co-authored Mikusheva, Matthew Gentzkow and Jesse M. Shapiro, Toru Kitagawa and Adam McCloskey, and Maximilian Kasy.

At all turns, Andrews stays focused on questions about the certainty (or uncertainty) involved in economic analysis and the degree of confidence (or lack thereof) we might have as a result.

“The worst scenario is when the data tells us very little, but we’re wrongly overconfident and think the data is telling us a lot,” Andrews says.

Making numbers more useful

To a consequential degree, Andrews also finds motivation in particular research problems. His recent paper (with Kitagawa) and McCloskey on the “winner’s curse” both introduces a new technique for estimating results and then applies it to a major research project on the social mobility of different U.S. neighborhoods, initiated by economists Raj Chetty and Nathaniel Hendren. Andrews’ conclusion: The Chetty/Hendren findings hold up well, suggesting social programs can productively use those results.

“The thing that matters for society is what is it we all do with those numbers,” Andrews says. “If we can think about what makes numbers more useful for people downstream, it’s important.”

Research is hardly all Andrews spends his time on. He has a long-running commitment to teaching, working with both undergraduates and graduate students, and as a PhD candidate in 2014, won MIT’s Robert M. Solow Prize for Excellence in Reasearch and Teaching.

“MIT students are very smart, so if you can help them frame a question the right way, it’s important,” Andrews says. “Ten years down the road, they may not retain the exact answer, but if they retain the framing of the question, they can work their way to the correct answer.”

In the MIT Department of Economics, where working productively with graduate students is a point of emphasis, Andrews now finds himself in the position Mikusheva was in, a decade ago, when she was encouraging him to follow his core intellectual interests.

“The graduate mentoring piece is very, very important,” Andrews says. “If you look at the social impact of an hour of my time, I feel the highest marginal product things I do are around advising. These are extremely capable people where a little bit of input or redirect can have big benefits down the road for them, and then hopefully the things they are doing are useful, and will benefit society.”

On all fronts, then, Andrews keeps trying to refine our knowledge about the extent of our knowledge. Summing up his work, Andrews offers his own epigram about the nature of his research.

“I would like to understand the extent to which we understand things,” Andrews says.

Methodology

Most Black adults say they have experienced racial discrimination (75%), either regularly (13%) or from time to time (62%). They say these experiences make them feel like the system is set up for their failure. Many also say Black people must work harder than everyone else to achieve success.

Three-quarters of Black Americans say they have experienced racial discrimination, either regularly (13%) or from time to time (62%). Fewer say they have not been discriminated against because of their race (23%). Black adults differ slightly on this question by age, education, family income and where they live.

Eight-in-ten Black Americans ages 65 and older say they experience racial discrimination, compared with smaller shares of Black adults under 30 (71%), ages 30 to 49 (76%) and 50 to 64 (75%). Black men 50 and older (82%) were most likely to say they experience racial discrimination when compared with men under 50 (73%) and Black women of any age (75%).

By education and family income

Most Black adults with at least a bachelor’s degree (82%) say they experience racial discrimination. Fewer of those with some college (77%) or a high school diploma or less education (70%) say the same. Black adults with upper incomes (80%) are more likely than those with lower incomes (74%) to say this. 1

Black adults who live in Western states (81%) are more likely than those who live in the Northeast (72%) and the South (74%) to say they experience racial discrimination. In the Midwest, 78% of Black adults experience this.

Black Americans who experience racial discrimination have a range of reactions to this treatment. Large majorities say their experiences with racial discrimination made them feel angry (76%) and like the system was designed to keep them down (73%).

Smaller shares say they felt nervous or anxious (59%), negative about the future (56%), scared for their personal safety (53%), isolated (52%) or depressed (41%), or had trouble sleeping (25%).

There are a few key differences among Black adults in their reactions to racial discrimination. Black women under 50 (80%) are more likely than Black men under 50 (73%) and women 50 and older (75%) to say racial discrimination made them feel angry.

Most Black adults also say experiencing racial discrimination made them feel like the system was designed to hold them down (73%). Black men 50 and older (75%) are more likely than Black women in this age group (69%) to say this.

By birthplace, education and party

Black adults born in the U.S. (77%) are more likely than Black immigrants (65%) to say experiencing racial discrimination made them feel angry. And Black adults who went to college (80%), regardless of their degree level, are more likely than those with a high school diploma or less (70%) to say the same.

Black Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (76%) are more likely than Black Republicans and Republican leaners (63%) to say their personal experiences with racial discrimination made them feel like the system was designed to hold them down. Still, majorities of both groups say racial discrimination makes them feel like the system was designed to hold them down.

Regardless of whether they feel systems are designed to hold them back, Black Americans generally view their road to success as more difficult than others’. Three-quarters of Black adults say they must work more than everyone else to achieve success. Far fewer say Black people must work the same as everyone else (19%) or less than everyone else (4%) to be successful.

By discrimination experience

Discrimination is still a key factor in how Black Americans think about their progress. Black adults who have experienced racial discrimination (79%) are more likely than those who haven’t (63%) to say Black people must work more than everyone else to be successful, though majorities of both groups share this view.

By ethnicity and age

Ethnicity and age also play a role. Non-Hispanic Black adults (76%) and multiracial Black adults (74%) are more likely than Hispanic Black adults (50%) to say Black people must work more than everyone else to achieve success. And the oldest Black adults, those ages 65 and older (82%), are more likely than those younger than 30 (69%) to say this.

By education, family income and party

Over eight-in-ten Black adults with a bachelor’s degree (84%) say Black people have to work more than everyone else to achieve success. Fewer of those with some college experience (77%) or a high school diploma or less education (68%) say the same. And Black adults with upper incomes (84%) are the most likely among income groups to say Black people must work harder than everyone else to be successful.

Political affiliation is also a factor in how Black Americans think about their progress. Black Democrats (79%) are more likely than Black Republicans (58%) to say Black people must work more than others to achieve success (though majorities of both groups say this).

The middle-income range for the American Trends Panel is about $47,800 to $143,400 annually for an average family of three. Lower-income families have adjusted incomes less than $47,800 and upper-income families have adjusted incomes greater than $143,400. All figures are expressed in 2022 dollars.
