ATLANTA — The PGA Tour season concludes at East Lake Golf Club for the Tour Championship this week, as the top 30 players look to take home the FedEx Cup.

Here is everything you need for the Tour Championship: a preview, full TV schedule, streaming schedule, and complete list of first-round tee times.

Tour Championship Preview

The final event of the 2023 season is here as the PGA Tour looks to crown a FedEx Cup champion at the Tour Championship. Players will compete for a $75 million purse, where the winner will take home a whopping $18 million.

This week is different from the BMW Championship and FedEx St. Jude Championship. Players start with strokes depending on where they finished on the points standings. Scottie Scheffler will start at 10-under, Viktor Hovland at 8-under, Rory McIlroy at 7-under, Jon Rahm at 6-under and so on.

East Lake Golf Club is a doozy. Multiple par-4s stretch beyond 450 yards, and there are only two par-5s on the course. Keeping it in the fairways will be imperative. Water comes into play on some pivotal holes, so avoiding the penalty areas will be a crucial component to hoisting the FedEx Cup trophy.

McIlroy sits in a strong spot entering the week. Last year, he came from behind and waltzed past Scheffler to win his third FedEx Cup. With nine straight top-9s and his game in form, can the Northern Irishman close it out in Atlanta again?

Scheffler fell short last year, but did he learn his lesson?

Hovland is coming off a historic 61 at Olympia Fields to win the BMW Championship, and he looks dialed in this week. Can he go back-to-back?

Xander Schauffele plays East Lake better than anyone in the field. Only Tiger Woods plays this course better historically. Schauffele won in 2017 and has finished in the top seven in the past six seasons.

So many intriguing storylines are here in Atlanta as the top players in the world will battle it out at East Lake. Of course, they will need to beat the heat too.

How to stream the Tour Championship

The Tour Championship will be available for streaming via ESPN+ from 11:15 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. For the third round, ESPN+ will stream coverage from noon to 7 p.m. Then on Sunday, streaming airs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

There will be featured group coverage on the streaming services all four days, per the PGA Tour.

Viktor Hovland wins the FedEx Cup with a record finish

ATLANTA (AP) — Viktor Hovland played the best golf of his life in the final two weeks of the PGA Tour season, and it paid off Sunday with the biggest trophy of his career — a FedEx Cup title along with the $18 million bonus.

Staked to a six-shot lead, Hovland didn’t flinch under a relentless challenge from Xander Schauffele. The 25-year-old Norwegian stayed on the attack and closed with a 7-under 63 for a five-shot victory at East Lake.

Schauffele made him work for that $18 million, firing at flags from the opening hole and closing with a 62. He got to within three shots with seven holes to play and had momentum on his side. And then Hovland ended the suspense with a 25-foot par putt on the 14th hole, and he put Schauffele away with a 10-foot birdie putt on the 16th.

Hovland was the No. 2 seed going into the Tour Championship, meaning he started the tournament at 8-under par. Hovland posted a 19-under 261 — the same score as Schauffele, who started the tournament at 3 under as the No. 15 seed.

It was the second time in four years that no one scored better than Schauffele, and he left Atlanta without a trophy to show for it.

U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark won the B-Flight, closing with a 65 to finish third, 11 shots behind. That was worth a $5 million bonus. Rory McIlroy had a 65 to finish fourth and collect $4 million, while Patrick Cantlay (66) was alone in fifth to earn $3 million.

The next time Hovland and Schauffele meet is for no prize money at all — the Ryder Cup in Rome in a month’s time.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Megan Khang beat Jin Young Ko with a par in a playoff for her first LPGA win, and Andrea Lee rallied to clinch a spot on the U.S. Solheim Cup team at the CPKC Women’s Open on Sunday.

After struggling most of the afternoon, Khang made a 4-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th hole at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club to force the playoff. Ko hit her tee shot on the first playoff hole into the hazard left of the fairway and took a double bogey after a penalty shot.

The 25-year-old Khang hit her second shot to the fringe left of the pin on 18 and two-putted for her first win in eight years on the LPGA Tour, giving her caddie a giant huge after it dropped. She shot 2-over 74 in the final round to finish at 9-under 279.

Lee needed to finish 13th to earn one of the seven automatic qualifying spots for the U.S. team. She just missed a birdie on 18 to shoot 70 in the final round, leaving her 11th at 2 under with several players still on the course.

After a nearly hourlong wait, Lee tied for 13th, earning a spot in the Sept. 22-24 matches in Spain.

Lexi Thompson earned the eighth U.S. Solheim Cup spot based on world rankings despite missing the cut by eight shots.

EUROPEAN TOUR

PRAGUE (AP) — Todd Clements came through a bunched field Sunday to win the Czech Masters for his first European tour title, closing with a bogey-free round of 9-under 63 for a one-stroke victory over Matt Wallace.

Wallace missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole at the Albatross Golf Resort that would have forced a playoff. He shot 67.

Clements, who turns 27 on Tuesday, graduated from the Challenge Tour last year and is ranked No. 394. He hadn’t finished in the top 20 in any previous event this season, but shot in the 60s every round at the Czech Masters.

Clements finished on 22-under 266.

Nicolai Hojgaard (69) finish third. The six-way-tie for fourth included Robert MacIntyre of Scotland (66) and Ludvig Aberg of Sweden (66), both of whom could be part of Europe’s team for the Ryder Cup next month.

MacIntyre’ strengthened his spot in third place on the European points list. Qualifying ends next week at the European Masters in Switzerland. Aberg, a 23-year-old Swede who only turned pro in June and was playing in his first European tour event, is under consideration for a captain’s pick.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

GRAND BLANC, Mich. (AP) — Vijay Singh won The Ally Challenge for his first PGA Tour Champions title in nearly five years, mainly because of a five-putt triple bogey by Paul Goydos.

Singh closed with a 4-under 68, and he walked off the 18th green at Warwick Hills thinking he would need some help from Goydos, who was in the group behind and had a one-shot lead. Singh didn’t realize the help already had been delivered.

Goydos was leading by one and had about an 18-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th hole. He left that about 3 feet short. He rammed the par putt by the hole. He missed the 3-foot bogey putt. And then he missed again from about 4 feet and then tapped in for triple bogey.

Goydos closed with a par for a 71, two shots behind. Singh finished at 14-under 202, one shot ahead of Jeff Maggert.

Steve Stricker, playing for the first time in a month, closed with a 68 and tied for eighth to match his worst finish of the year. He has five wins — three of them senior majors — and five runner-up finishes.

KORN FERRY TOUR

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Chan Kim closed with a 7-under 64 to win the Albertsons Boise Open for his second straight win on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Kim needed a strong closing round to hold off David Kocher, who birdied his last hole for a 59 and finished two shots behind. It was the third 59 on the Korn Ferry Tour this year, and the sixth sub-60 round in professional golf in 2023.

Kim, the Hawaii native who played at Arizona State, previously had eight wins on the Japan Golf Tour. Now he has back-to-back titles on the Korn Ferry Tour, and he already is assured of a PGA Tour card for 2024.

Starting with a two-shot lead, Kim opened par-birdie-eagle to seize control. The challenge came late in the round when Kocher had seven birdies over the final eight holes of the front nine, made eagle on the par-5 16th and finished with a birdie for his 59 to close to within one shot.

Kim made birdie on the 16th for a two-shot cushion with two to play, and he finished with two pars for a four-day total of 28-under 256.

OTHER TOURS

Trish Johnson of England closed with a 1-over 72 and won the U.S. Senior Women’s Open by one shot over Leta Lindley at Old Waverly. Catriona Matthew of Scotland had a 73 to finish third. Annika Sorenstam shot 71 and tied for fourth. ... Eugenio Chacarra closed with a 5-under 67 and then went 10 extra holes — the longest playoff in Asian Tour history — to defeat Matt Jones in the St. Andrews Bay Championship. Jones closed with a 69 and lost when he missed a 5-foot par putt on the 10th playoff hole. ... China’s Yue Ren beat Thailand’s Chanettee Wannasaen with a par on the second playoff hole to win the Epson Tour’s Circling Raven Championship. Ren posted a final round 8-under 64 and tied Wannasaen (4-under 68) at 13-under 203 after 72 holes. ... Younghan Song closed with a 3-under 69 for a one-shot victory over Ryutaro Nagano in the Sansan KBC. Song won for the first time on the Japan Golf Tour, and the first time anywhere since the Singapore Open in 2016. ... Jacques Kruyswijk of South Africa birdied his final two holes for a 4-under 63 to win the rain-shortened Dormy Open in Sweden and claim his first European Challenge Tour title. The third round was completed Sunday after it was determined the fourth round could not be played. ... Hayden Springer closed with a 6-under 66 to win the Manitoba Open by three shots over Etienne Paineau. Springer’s first PGA Tour Canada title also was the first pro title of the American’s career. ... Ryan van Velzen and Luca Filippi teamed for an 8-under 64 and defeated Louis Albertse and Hennie O’Kennedy in a playoff to win the Bains Whisky Ubunye Championship. ... Peter Baker coasted to victory in the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship with an even-par 72 at Trump International in Scotland and a six-shot victory over Greg Owen. ... Erika Kikuchia shot a 5-under 67 and then defeated Jiyai Shin and Akie Iwai in a playoff to win the Nitori Ladies on the Japan LPGA.

Viktor hovland wins 2023 tour championship to claim season-ending fedex cup, share this article.

ATLANTA – When Viktor Hovland won the Hero World Challenge in December, it put a bow on a year that was defined by close calls but otherwise was short on victory. For some, it would have represented a time to kick back, enjoy the holidays and assume his end-of-the-season winning form would be a springboard to bigger things, but not Hovland. He sought to get better and that meant it was time to re-make himself into a more complete player.

“If you want to get to the next level, you have to look introspectively,” he said. “I think when you try to be honest with yourself and ask yourself, OK, how can I get better, I just basically have to force myself to change a couple of these mindset things.”

All the hard work – to his swing, short game, use of Aim Point and course strategy – paid off, culminating in back-to-back wins and a prize of $18 million as the FedEx Cup champion. On another hot, humid day that led to a nearly two-hour weather delay, Hovland carded a 7-under 63 at East Lake Golf Club and rolled to a five-stroke victory over Xander Schauffele in the 30-man Tour Championship, the 47th event of the 2022-23 season and third and final leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

“He just keeps his foot on the pedal,” three-time FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy said, “just isn’t scared.”

No fear and a refusal to be complacent are attributes that have made the 25-year-old Norwegian a three-time winner this season and one of the best players in the game. Despite winning the U.S. Amateur in 2018 and finding immediate success on the PGA Tour as one of the best ballstrikers in golf, Hovland grew frustrated with his consistency last season.

“It’s a little frustrating showing up to events when you don’t feel like you have your best stuff,” he said before winning in the Bahamas in December. “You don’t have the confidence over the ball thinking, ‘OK, I’m going to stuff this 7-iron,’ because that’s what I used to do when I first came out here and the last two years basically it’s been pretty deadly from the fairway.”

Hovland’s frustration boiled over and in his search to identify flaws in his game that could help him challenge for world No. 1, he changed swing coaches in January, hiring Joe Mayo, better known in social media circles as the Trackman Maestro.

“It is amazing that a player could win a tournament and not be happy with themselves,” Mayo said of Hovland switching coaches shortly after a win, but Mayo’s seen pros who have attributed a win to “smoke and mirrors.”

Switching coaches can be a risky proposition for a player. It can be a recipe for disaster but Mayo noted that Hovland is too savvy to let that happen.

“He’s not gonna let any instructor screw him up,” Mayo said. “He’s too smart for it. He’s got a great bullshit meter, as I would say.”

Mayo studied 3-D imaging of Hovland’s swing and helped him reestablish a repeatable swing and restore faith in his squeeze cut. Hovland said he’s had his best driving season. East Lake is too difficult to play from its wiry rough but Hovland, who ranked first in driving accuracy for the second straight week, could be aggressive and go flag-hunting.

“His ballstriking is probably top 3 on Tour, especially when he’s playing well,” said Edoardo Molinari, a winner of three DP Tour titles, who doubles as Hovland’s performance coach. “He doesn’t miss a shot.”

His short-game was another story. Early in his career, Hovland admitted his chipping game “sucked.” He ranked 191st in Strokes Gained: Around the Green last season.

“Before, when I was standing over every shot, I was like, ‘Don’t duff it, skull it, don’t leave it in the bunker,” Hovland said last week. “Me and a buddy of mine, we made up this saying: Just land it on and keep it on. We set the bar pretty low when we had a chip. Now it’s a lot of fun to be able to open up that face and just slap the ground and put some friction on the ball.”

At the Tour Championship, Hovland ranked first in scrambling as he notched his sixth career PGA Tour title. Mayo said he didn’t even discuss the short game with Hovland during their first month together. On Tuesday of the Genesis Invitational in February, Mayo told his pupil, “Anybody that can put a 4-iron on the back of the ball at 105 miles an hour and hit it 240, are you telling me that you can’t chip a golf ball? I don’t accept that, and I don’t buy it.”

Mayo introduced the short-game package in tiny morsels throught the Players Championship in March. Hovland has improved to 105th in SG: Around the Green this season.

Mayo points out that that figure doesn’t take into account when they started working together. Mayo asked Molinari to run his short game stats from the Players through the FedEx St. Jude Championship and the numbers don’t lie: He’s gained .176 shots, “which puts him at about 55th,” Mayo said.

“That’s been the difference from being still a top-10 player in the world to what he’s done this year,” McIlroy said.

The final ingredient in turning Hovland into his best self this season was improving his course management. He began working with Molinari last year but it was this spring where they made one of their biggest discoveries. After the Masters, where Hovland finished T-7, Mayo asked Molinari to crunch some numbers and discovered that when Hovland attacked greens with pitching wedge through 8-iron, he was short-siding himself 30 percent of the time and the Tour average is 20 percent of the time.

“Sometimes he just misses in spots where no one would get up and down,” Molinari said. “The short game is less of an issue than it is believed to be.” Hovland compared his new-found focus on course management to the game of poker and placing smart bets depending on the hand he’s dealt. He implemented the strategy at the PGA Championship and finished T-2, and it worked to perfection at the Memorial in June, the first of his three wins in his last eight events.

“Anytime you can tilt math to your advantage, that can be huge,” he said. Mayo has beaten into Hovland’s head that in Tiger Woods’s heyday, he made a living off of hitting safely to 20 feet, shooting 70 and winning a bundle of majors.

“It’s called boring golf and if Viktor Hovland plays boring golf, he’s going to be hard to beat,” Mayo said.

A week ago, at the BMW Championship near Chicago, Hovland said he “blacked out for a minute” en route to a final-round 61, which included seven birdies and a back-nine 28 to clip world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick.

At East Lake, where he won the 2018 East Lake Cup men’s stroke play title, which included his first hole-in-one at the par-3 11th, Hovland began the week in second place with a stroke allocation of 8 under in the staggered start. With rounds of 68-64-66, he built a commanding six-stroke lead and he continued his assault on par with four birdies in his first six holes. Schauffele (62) did his best to chip away at the lead, making birdie at seven of his first 12 holes to trim the deficit to three.

“I’ll hold my head up high,” Schauffele said. “It was the most fun I had losing in quite some time.”

Just when it looked like it was about to become a taut affair, Hovland canned a clutch 23-foot par putt at No. 13, the longest putt he made all week, and tacked on birdies at 16 and 17 for good measure to wrap up a bogey-free final round and a total score of 27 under that made the walk to the 18th green a foregone conclusion. It was a testament to how far Hovland’s game has progressed.

“I’m very hard on myself and I felt like even though I had the game to compete, I never truly believed it,” he said. “I’ve just gotten better and better every single year, and with that comes the belief and I feel like the belief was the last missing piece.”

The full field was released Sunday night for the upcoming Wells Fargo Championship, the PGA Tour’s sixth signature event of the season.

The $20 million tournament will take place at Quail Hollow Golf Club, May 9-12, in Charlotte, North Carolina. All of the eligible players are competing with the exception of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler who, with wife Meredith, has been expecting the couple’s first child.

Highlighting the world-class field is Rory McIlroy. The world No. 2 has won this tournament three times (2010, ’15 and ’21). Wyndham Clark is the defending champion. Like McIlroy, Clark collected his first Tour title at Quail Hollow and went on to become a major champion, also winning the ’23 U.S. Open at LA Country Club.

LIV Golf's Talor Gooch Will Not Try to Qualify for the U.S. Open

Several LIV Golf League players will attempt to make the U.S. Open field via final qualifying next month.

Talor Gooch won’t be one of them.

The top player on LIV Golf in 2023 who won three times and captured the season-long points race said during a news conference in Singapore on Thursday that he would not be taking part.

He did not give a reason.

Gooch appeared alongside Smash GC teammates Brooks Koepka, Graeme McDowell and Jason Kokrak, and they were all asked if they would attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open, which will conduct 36-hole qualifiers around the country on May 3.

Both McDowell and Kokrak said they would not only attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open, but for the British Open as well—which will have final qualifying two weeks prior to the championship.

A total of 35 players from LIV are scheduled to play in final qualifying. Koepka, a two-time major winner and the reigning PGA champion , is exempt.

Gooch simply said: “I’m not.”  And offered no explanation.

The one-time PGA Tour winner has been outspoken about not being included in the major championships.

Last year, he earned his way into the Masters and the British Open having finished in the top 30 in the 2022 PGA Tour FedEx Cup standings. But Gooch was miffed that the U.S. Open changed its rules to state that the same exemption would only go to a player “eligible” for the season-ending Tour Championship. Having gone to LIV Golf, Gooch was not eligible.

Earlier this year, Gooch made headlines when he said: “If Rory McIlroy goes and completes his (career) Grand Slam without some of the best players in the world, there is just going to be an asterisk. It’s just the reality.”

LIV Golf does not receive Official World Golf Ranking points for its events and many of its players have plummeted in the rankings while not earning points. Gooch, who was top 50 in the world around this time last year, has sunk to 624th in the OWGR. He is ranked 41st by Data Golf, which includes LIV tournaments.

He tied for 34th at the Masters last year and then missed the cut at the PGA Championship. He did not attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open and then missed the cut at The Open.

Gooch has no victories so far this year with LIV Golf but does have three top 10s. He is the defending champion of this week’s event in Singapore.

Among the LIV golfers scheduled to compete in final qualifying for the U.S. Open are Sergio Garcia, Patrick Reed and Henrik Stenson.

Only a couple of tournaments remain on the pga tour calendar before the second major championship of the season.

The PGA Tour returned to its regularly scheduled programming with a standard format of 72 holes of stroke play to decide a winner this weekend at the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson. Welcoming the normal cast of characters to TPC Craig Ranch for the fourth straight season, the PGA Tour embarks on its final full-field event before the PGA Championship to be held in two weeks.

After three rounds, it's Canadian Taylor Pendrith at the top of the leaderboard at 19 under, one shot ahead of Jake Knapp.

Last year's winner, Jason Day, is set to defend his title while two-time champion K.H. Lee hopes to grab his third Byron Nelson title in the last four years. Adam Scott, Sungjae Im and Min Woo Lee are among the rest of the large international contingent to round out the action.
