The Travelling Players - O Thiasos (DVD)

The Travelling Players - O Thiasos

Theo Angelopoulos – Greece – 1975

OV/german/french

the travelling players blu ray

The Travelling Players is a film of epic proportions. The action takes place during the years 1939-52 and is seen as a series of individual, often inexplicable events or tableaux, commentated by monologues, by slogans written on the walls, or by songs. It reveals the period's turbulent history while focusing on a travelling company of actors who spend those fourteen years wandering through provinces, cities and villages, performing, in increasingly threadbare circumstances, a 19th century pastoral melodrama, Persiadis' Golfo the Shepherdess. They never get to finish the play and the tranquil sheep painted on their back cloth gaze down upon generations of anguish and bloodshed. The passage of history reverberates in individual incidents or is summarized in symbols. These sad, shabby, often hungry folk, whose relationship is based on the family of the House of Atreus, are of varying political hues - from active collaborators with the Nazis (Aegisthus), to opportunists (Chrysothemis), to centrist Greek patriots (Agamemnon), to the apolitical (Clytemnestra), to left-wing idealists (Electra), to communist guerillas (Orestes). And they fill these roles as much as they do the mythic ones of wandering general, faithless wife, betrayer or vengeful son. As they travel amid the constant wartime convulsions, they begin, unconsciously, to enact parallels to Aeschylus' tragic cycle.  trigon-film dvd-edition 232 Double DVD Language OV greek Subtitles deutsch, français Length 224 min. THE TRAVELLING PLAYERS

The Travelling Players is a film of epic proportions. The action takes place during the years 1939–52 and is seen as a series of individual, often inexplicable events or tableaux, commentated by monologues, by slogans written on the walls, or by songs.

(aka "The Travelling Players" or "O Thiassos" )

directed by Theo Angelopoulos Greece 1975

Made, incredibly, under the noses of the military police during the Colonels' regime, Angelopoulos' film examines, with a passionate radicalism, the labyrinth of Greek politics around that country's agonising civil war. This is done through the eyes of a troupe of actors, whose pastoral folk drama Golfo the Shepherdess is continually interrupted as they become unwitting spectators of the political events that ultimately polarise them. This slow, complex, four-hour film will obviously provide problems for people raised on machine-gun cutting techniques. Editing is very restrained, and some takes last up to five minutes, but the stately pace of the film soon becomes compulsive; and the shabby provincial Greece of rusting railway tracks and flaking facades which the slow camera examines is visually beguiling. The closing passage, when one of the actors is buried after being executed, and his colleagues spontaneously raise their hands above their heads to applaud not a performance but a life, is an incredibly moving moment.

The Travelling Players

Film details, brief synopsis, cast & crew, theo angelopoulos, eva kotamanidou, aliki georgouli, statos pachis, maris vassilou, petros zarkadis, technical specs.

In 1952 a travelling actor's troupe roams the countryside performing a popular Greek pastoral play, which soon becomes a thinly disguised version of the "Oresteia." At the same time, their performances and lives are constantly interrupted by a year in which there is tremendous political change and they are forced to reflect upon their lives since 1939, the last time their country had a major political upheaval--the eve of entering World War II.

Curiously, the French prints have a slightly different order of scenes (Alexandre's first encounter with Eleni appears a little earlier), while the Greek prints have an additional voiceover at one point. But what a superb film! I'm haunted by this closing image , which, like so much else in Angelopoulos' oeuvre, moves me deeply in ways that I'm unable to account for intellectually.

3 Best Portable DVD & Blu-ray Players [2023 Updated]

Photo of author

In a few months, it’s going to be summer. Time to hit the road and enjoy a family vacation. Of course, this begs an obvious question: how do you keep your kids quiet in the back seat? One way is to use a portable DVD and Blu-ray player, so you can enjoy peace and quiet. But a portable player isn’t just useful for watching the latest Pixar movie. It’s also a great choice if you travel frequently for business. Sure, you could just use your laptop. But you probably need your laptop for work, and want to save batteries. Using a separate device can alleviate this problem.

But how do you choose a well-designed portable DVD and Blu-ray player? You want to look for a few different things. First, you want to look for a rugged, well-engineered design. By nature, this type of device needs to be able to handle the rigors of the road. Secondly, you want compatibility with other devices. This isn’t strictly necessary, but it will make your portable device useful at home as well as on the road. Finally, you want a good battery. If you’re just using it in the car for your kids, you won’t need this. But if you’re on an airplane, you’re going to want to get through at least one or two movies.

Today, we’ll be looking at three different options. First up to the plate is the NAVISKAUTO 12” Portable Blu Ray Player. This is a powerful, travel-ready device that’s also compatible with your home entertainment system. Next up is the FANGOR 10.1″ Portable Blu-Ray Player. This is a travel-ready player with a built-in handle that’s perfect for kids. Batting cleanup is the DBPOWER 12″ Portable DVD Player. This is a fun, colorful machine with a long-lasting battery. But which one is the best? Let’s find out!

NAVISKAUTO Portable Blu Ray Player

NAVISKAUTO 12″ Portable Blu Ray Player

The NAVISKAUTO 12″ Portable Blu Ray Player is designed specifically to be used in your car. This isn’t to say it’s no good for other purposes. It’s simply that it’s ideal for kids to use in the back seat. In addition to a long-lasting battery, there’s also an optional headset mount available. In addition, tabletop or desktop use is also easy. The built-in screen can be rotated 270 degrees, which allows for easy positioning under almost any circumstances. The screen can even be flipped 180 degrees and used like a tablet.

The overall dimensions of the device are roughly 15 inches wide, 10 inches long, and 3 inches thick. These are closed dimensions, not opened dimensions. But for transport and carrying in your carry-on bag, the small size is helpful. The total weight is 4.21 pounds. This is a bit beefy, but not terrible. It’s like carrying a second large laptop along with your supplies.

The design is intuitive and easy to use, with several control buttons located on the surface. These allow for quick, easy operation. If you want to use the player in tablet mode, you won’t have to worry about the controls being obstructed. There’s a remote control included in the kit. In addition, the kit also includes a DC adapter for wall charging, as well as a 12-volt car charger. There’s even an AV cable for connecting to your TV or monitor. NAVISKAUTO guarantees the player for 18 months, so you don’t have to worry about any manufacturer defects.

NAVISKAUTO Portable Blu Ray Player

Many portable DVD and Blu-ray players don’t have the same capabilities as a home player. The most annoying feature that’s often missing is the memory/resume function. With the NAVISKAUTO, this is a non-issue. Remove the disc, turn off the player, and it will remember where you stopped. When you turn the player back on, you can resume playing from the same point.

Video and Audio Quality

No DVD player is worth buying if the screen quality is sub-par. So how does the NAVISKAUTO stack up? It has a 1024 x 600-pixel display, which is quite good for the size. It would have been nice to see 720p, but in practice, there’s not much difference here. Given the relatively small screen size, it might as well be true HD. The audio quality is reasonably good, not just stereo, but Dolby. As you might expect from a small unit, the speakers are fairly small, and have limited quality. That said, when you plug in a pair of decent headphones, you’ll be blown away by the quality of the audio.

NAVISKAUTO Portable Blu Ray Player

Compatibility & Battery Life

When it comes to compatibility, the NAVISKAUTO player performs very well. It’s not locked to any region for DVDs. For most people, this won’t make much of a difference. But if you’re a fan of foreign films, you’ll be able to watch all the Japanese anime DVDs you want. Blu-ray discs are limited to Region A. This covers North America, most of South America, Japan, and parts of Southeast Asia. That said, you won’t be able to play 4K or 3D Blu-ray discs. In addition to playing videos from discs, you can also play videos and music from a USB or SD card. The card size is limited to 128GB, but that leaves space for plenty of movies.

But suppose you want to watch movies on your TV? No problem. Use an HDMI cable, and you’ll get full 1080p HD on your living room or hotel room TV. You can also connect two NAVISKAUTO players together with the AV cable. This allows you to play the same disc on both screens at the same time. If you have two kids in the back seat, this will keep them from fighting over a single screen.

The NAVISKAUTO player’s battery life depends on what type of media you’re playing. If you’re playing a DVD, you’ll get 5 hours of battery life from a full charge. If you’re playing a Blu-ray disc, this drops to 3 hours. This is because Blu-ray requires a more powerful laser for playback. Regardless, you’ll be able to get through one or two movies on a single charge. And if the unit is plugged in, you don’t have to worry about battery life at all.

FANGOR Portable Blu-Ray Player

FANGOR 10.1″ Portable Blu-Ray Player

The FANGOR 10.1” Portable Blu-Ray Player is a bit bulkier than the NAVISKAUTO player. It measures 14.2 inches wide, 10 inches deep, and 2.9 inches thick. That said, the overall weight is actually light, at slightly less than 4 pounds. And part of the expanded size adds extra functionality. There’s a built-in handle on the front, which makes the FANGOR easy to carry. Like the NAVISKAUTO, the FANGOR can be used in a variety of configurations. The screen swivels 270 degrees, which makes it easy to position for viewing from any angle. And like the NAVISKAUTO, it can be flipped 180 degrees and used like a tablet.

The case is constructed from sturdy black ABS plastic, with speakers towards the front by the handle. In addition to manual controls, you also get a remote control. The kit also includes a DC power adapter, car charger, AV able, and an owner’s manual. Throw in a 12-month manufacturer’s warranty to protect you from defects, and you’ve got an excellent product package. Not that you’ll need the warranty. The FANGOR is shock-resistant.

FANGOR Portable Blu-Ray Player

In addition to standard playback, the FANGOR also provides several extra options. There’s a slow-motion function, as well as a zoom function. There’s also a memory function, much like the NAVISKAUTO offers. If you have to stop playback in the middle of a movie, you won’t have to fast forward to find your place.

Like the NAVISKAUTO player, the FANGOR’s screen has a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. Once again, at this size, that’s essentially the same as HD. You’ll think you were watching a gorgeous big screen TV. The audio quality is about what you’d expect from a small set of speakers. That says, there’s only basic 2-channel stereo. If you’re wearing headphones, you’ll get louder volume, but the quality won’t be as good as Dolby.

FANGOR Portable Blu-Ray Player

The FANGOR player offers region-free DVD playback, as well as Region A Blu-ray playback. Like the NAVISKAUTO, it doesn’t support 4K or 3D Blu-ray discs. It does support USB and SD cards, although the maximum size is limited to 32GB. When connected to a TV via HDMI cable, it will play video in full 1080p.

The FANGOR 10.1” Portable Blu-Ray Player has a built-in 3,800mAh battery. This will get you up to 3 hours of DVD playback, which is a bit underwhelming. Blu-ray playback times are a bit shorter, but still long enough that you can get through most movies. And when you’re plugged in, you can watch for as long as you like.

DBPOWER Portable DVD Player

DBPOWER 12″ Portable DVD Player

The DBPOWER 12” Portable DVD Player is designed to be an affordable alternative to other options. On the one hand, this means you can save money while prepping for your family vacation. On the other hand, it means you’ll get fewer features. The case is available both in black and in a fun blue finish. It measures 12 inches wide, 7.2 inches deep, and 1.6 inches thick, and weighs 3.25 pounds.

The 10-inch screen swivels 270 degrees, and can also be flipped over like a tablet. In addition to the player itself, you’ll receive a DC adapter and a car charger. Battery life is no issue when you can stay plugged in. You also get a 1-year manufacturer’s warranty that covers defects in parts and labor. This ensures you’ll be protected from any factory defects.

DBPOWER Portable DVD Player

Like the other DVD players on our list, the DBPOWER has a screen resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. This is more than good enough for the size, and you won’t have any complaints. That said, the speakers have a very low maximum volume. Even when it’s cranked all the way up, it can be tough to hear over traffic noise. Make sure to buy a pair of headphones for your kid.

DBPOWER Portable DVD Player

The DBPOWER player supports playback of CDs, DVDs, and even CD-R/RW and DVD +/-R/RW. However, you won’t be able to play back Blu-ray discs. DVD playback is region-free, so you don’t need to worry about restrictions on foreign films. If you prefer different formats, you can also play back video from a USB or SD card. Keep in mind, though, that the maximum size is 32GB, and the maximum resolution is 720 x 576.

With an AV cable, you can connect the DBPOWER player to your TV to enjoy full 1080p. Alternatively, you can link two DBPOWER players together for simultaneous playback. This is a great feature if you’ve got more than one kid in the back seat. The DBPOWER player has an internal 2,500mAh lithium battery, which allows for 5 hours of playback. This should be more than enough for most purposes.

Final Verdict

So, which one of these players is the best of the bunch? If you want maximum compatibility, the NAVISKAUTO 12″ Portable Blu Ray Player is our choice. It supports HD upscaling as well as shared playback. And the support for 128GB USB players is a nice touch.

For portability, the FANGOR 10.1″ Portable Blu-Ray Player is the best choice. The built-in handle makes it easy to carry. And it still supports Blu-ray playback, although the battery life is relatively limited.

Finally, there’s the DBPOWER 12″ Portable DVD Player , which is very affordable. That said, it comes with commensurately fewer features. For example, there’s no HDMI port, and there’s no support for Blu-ray playback. But if you want to save a few bucks, it’s a great choice.

Are Blu-ray players still worth buying?

Blu-ray players offer stunning clarity and immersive sound for physical film lovers, but streaming services compete with vast libraries and convenience. If you cherish movie nights with pristine quality and control, a Blu-ray player might be a satisfying investment. Consider how often you enjoy physical discs and weigh them against streaming options before making your decision.

What will replace Blu-ray players?

The future of physical media playback remains uncertain, but several contenders could potentially replace Blu-ray players: streaming services, advanced physical formats, Holographic Versatile Discs, and cloud-based gaming.

How can I play Blu-ray without a Blu-ray player?

You have several options for playing Blu-ray without a physical Blu-ray player. You can use Blu-ray player software like Vidmore Player to watch Blu-ray movies on your computer. Stream Blu-rays from some streaming services like Vudu, Amazon Prime Video, and iTunes. Or use a gaming console with built-in Blu-ray playback, such as Sony PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Xbox One.

In an era of streaming dominance, portable Blu-ray players might seem like relics of the past. However, for cinephiles and movie enthusiasts who crave the unparalleled quality and uncompressed cinematic experience of Blu-ray, these compact devices are more relevant than ever. You can select a desired one from the introduced portable Blu-ray players above.

An Ingenious Blu-Ray Mini-Disk Player

Internals of the Blu-ray player, showing both the blu-ray drive and the custom PCBs

[befi] brings us a project as impressive as it is reminiscent of older times, a Blu-Ray mini disk player. Easily fitting inside a pocket like a 8 cm CD player would, this is a labour of love and, thanks to [befi]’s skills both in electronics and in using a dremel tool.

A BluRay drive was taken apart, for a start, and a lot of case parts were cut off; somehow, [befi] made it fit within an exceptionally tiny footprint, getting new structural parts printed instead, to a new size. The space savings let him put a fully custom F1C100S-powered board with a number of unique features, from a USB-SATA chip to talk to the BluRay drive, to USB pathway control for making sure the player can do USB gadget mode when desired.

There’s an OLED screen on the side, buttons for controlling the playback, power and battery management – this player is built to a high standard, ready for day-to-day use as your companion, in the world where leaving your smartphone as uninvolved in your life as possible is a surprisingly wise decision. As a fun aside, did you know that while 8 cm CDs and DVDs existed, 8 cm BluRay drives never made it to market? If you’re wondering how is it that [befi] has disks to play in this device, yes, he’s used a dremel here too.

Everything is open-sourced – 3D print files, the F1C100S board, and the Buildroot distribution complete with all the custom software used. If you want to build such a player, and we wouldn’t be surprised if you were, there’s more than enough resources for you to go off. And, if you’re thinking of building something else in a similar way, the Buildroot image will be hugely helpful.

Want some entertainment instead? Watch the video embedded below, the build journey is full of things you never knew you wanted to learn. This player is definitely a shining star on the dark path that is Blu-Ray, given that our most popular articles on Blu-Ray are about its problems .

Nice work, now for the next project, reimagine this,

https://obsoletemedia.org/videonow/

First thought before clicking the link, “Oh, TechMoan should cover this!”

Interesting claim of 25 minutes of video given 80mm cd only held 18 to maybe 24 minutes of audio depending on the format, or 210MB at most. If literally only using one audio channel for the video, the greyscale choice makes some sense but it would still be very poor quality or resolution. I imagine some form of VCD encoding was likely used given that was all the rage before DVD burners and media become more prevalent, reliable and affordable.

… it’s not a CD…. it’s a Blu Ray….. that’s the source of your confusion I’m guessing.

“VideoNow used non-standard sized optical discs, apparently based on the audio Compact Disc format. These were known as Personal Video Discs (PVDs) and the discs for VideoNow were 85mm in diameter (compared to 120mm for a standard Compact Disc) with a capacity of up to 25 minutes of video. Only mono sound was available as the video information took up one of the audio channels.”

↑ Quoted from the link you are replying to.

Ah, mini disk, not mini disc. And no, I don’t know how a Blu-ray Mini Disc player would have worked lol

Super cool! But, uh, what’s it for? This recap does not actually mention what it does, only that it’s small…

Since its bluray, i presume it’s video? How much video can it store, what’s the capacity of such a small disc?

Everyone wanted universal storage on Minidisc to be a thing in the nineties like in Johnny Mnemonic & Matrix. But Sony is Sony, they only relented somewhat in 2001 with NetMD (can you store arbitrary files, or still just the music?).

This presents viable alternative in case you are planning time travel ;-). Mini CDs are barely larger than MD.

Im quite surprised you can just cut ordinary CD-RW/Bluray and it still works :-o

MD DATA actually existed since ’93, needed specific drives… NetMD does not allow you to put arbitrary files but the later HiMD does (both with MD and HiMD discs as long as they’re formatted in HiMD mode)

Yeah, I have HiMD discs and recorders. You can virtually put what you want on them. I managed to hook up a camera and record live images onto them.

MD always seemed like a great idea to me. It’s so stable, not susceptible to random magnetic corruption. The media is protected, unlike CD/DVD-RW. I always expected someone to push it for archival storage.

I always thought it was dumb to have so much wasted space in the middle of CDs etc. I’d like to see a project to reclaim all that wasted real estate.
