The Tourist season 1 episode 4 spoilers: More devastation to come

The Tourist January 9, 2022

The Tourist

At this point, we should go ahead and now say that we’re at the halfway point in the season! More than likely, we’re going to see things continue to build from one week to the next. There’s a lot of shocking stuff that we’re going to see unfold. We have to get some sort of answers as to what’s next for The Man, and how we’re going to continue to see his journey unfold. Let’s just go ahead and hope that the show finds a way to tie together some of the loose ends.

For now, let’s just say that Jamie Dornan’s character is going to be traveling further and further into the Outback, ready to take on whatever problems lie ahead for him there.

Below, you can check out the full  The Tourist  season 1 episode 4 synopsis with more updates as to what lies ahead:

The chaotic events of the previous episode propel The Man (Jamie Dornan) and Helen (Danielle Macdonald) further into the outback and Luci (Shalom Brune-Franklin) is left to fight on her own.

With nowhere else to turn, and a trail of bodies in his wake, The Man is forced to use Helen to ensure he stays alive long enough to discover who he is. But their journey soon leads them to a grisly discovery that changes everything.

Meanwhile, Kosta (Alex Dimitriades) and Dimitri (Alex Andreas) fly to Australia. Upon their arrival, Kosta proves quite how dangerously unpredictable he can be. Paths converge, and Lachlan (Damon Herriman) is given a renewed urgency to find his suspect. But the course of events takes an unlikely and devastating turn, after Lachlan makes a grave decision.

The Tourist season 2 episode 4 recap: Who is 'Miss Cassidy'?

Elliot is desperate to make amends with Fergal, while Frank McDonnell is more determined than ever to make him pay...

The Tourist season 2 episode 1 recap The Tourist season 2 episode 2 recap The Tourist season 2 episode 3 recap The Tourist season 2 episode 5 recap The Tourist season 2 ending explained

After learning he has a son — Fergal McDonnell — Elliot heads to his mother's house and she fills him in on a little bit more of Cassidy family history, before they're forced to make a hasty escape. Meanwhile, Frank McDonnell is infuriated by the bombshell about his grandson and is determined to get his revenge, as this thriller really hots up...

The fourth episode starts by taking us back to that mysterious diver, who we saw retrieving a suitcase from a plane beneath the sea at the end of the first episode — and not before time. But what’s in the suitcase? Is it the thing that Frank McDonnell has been after all these years?

Meanwhile, Niamh Cassidy is digging up a similar suitcase but is furious when she finds it. Does this mean there were originally two cases and one was stolen? Why is she so upset? Either way, while she shoves it back into the hole, the mysterious diver is busy burying hers. However we get a big clue as to who this woman is when the taxi driver calls her ‘Miss Cassidy’? Is she Eugene's sister and has she betrayed Niamh?

Did Frank REALLY not know the truth about Fergal?

Elsewhere, Eugene calls Frank and says he's Fergal’s father. Frank says he didn’t know that, but we’re not sure we believe him. He was very keen to keep Fergal around in the last episode. Did he want to keep him around so he could use him as leverage against Elliot? If he did know the truth, why would he lie about it? Hmmm...

The Tourist season 2 episode 4 recap

What's in that suitcase?

But never mind about that, because Frank is now unloading some key plot info. It seems before his father died in America over 40 years ago, he sent Frank something important, however the plane went down in the sea. Frank sent a diver down to retrieve the bags, but he didn’t return and he suspects Niamh Cassidy is responsible and still has it to this day.

If Elliot gets it back, Frank says he’ll return Fergal… And the name of the man who went to retrieve the bags? Elliot Stanley. But what's in that case?

The Tourist season 2 episode 4 recap

Who was Elliot's uncle?

Elsewhere, Donal McDonnell finishes his drink and returns home to his wife Claire and confronts her about Fergal's parentage. We kind of assumed this was what Donal was so furious with Elliot about, but it seems he’s only just found out, so imagine how livid he is with Elliot now! Seconds later, Fergal walks in during their argument and learns the truth as well.

Claire speaks to Fergal later on and says his father — and we presume she means Donal — thinks it would be best if he left town for a bit, so they pack him off to study Irish at college.

Later on, Elliot visits his mother who finds the news about her newly-discovered grandson hilarious. Yet the mood soon changes when Elliot asks his mum about the thing she took from Frank all those years ago. She responds by telling him the story about how Frank murdered her brother — Elliot’s uncle — with a million-pound bottle of whisky, which puts a different spin on things. However, Niamh does say she will help him in his bid to get his son back. But we're desperate to know more about Elliot's uncle...

That evening, while Elliot and Helen discuss their matrimonial future, Niamh is getting her camo gear on and preparing for the private army that is almost certainly coming for them. When they arrive, an almighty gun battle erupts, while Eugene, Helen and Niamh escape through a back door.

The Tourist season 2 episode 4 recap

Will Helen survive?!

The next morning Elliot receives a call from his son Fergal who wants to meet with him. Niamh asks him to take some of her crew with him for safety, but he refuses and sets off with Helen, who clearly is increasingly desperate to leave Ireland.

Elsewhere, when Claire gets back from dropping off Fergal, she finds Frank waiting for her and he’s absolutely furious. If he had always known the truth about Fergal then he's putting on a good performance since it came out.

He says Fergal needs to prove his loyalty to the McDonnell clan — but what’s he going to make him do? Betray his biological father? Is Elliot being lured into a trap by his son? Or is Frank using Fergal as bait?

We don't have to wait long before we get an answer, as when Elliot and Helen get to the (very remote) meeting place, they spot a suspicious guy wandering about, who they overpower and force to reveal Fergal's location. When they find him, the youngster tells them he didn’t want to call, but Frank insists before Elliot goes on to explain that while he’s done a lot of bad stuff in his past, he’s a changed man and would never abandon his son, as he did before. But their heart-to-heart is soon interrupted by Donal and his men, who take Elliot and Helen away. Some first day at college for Fergal!

The McDonnells take the couple to the woods, where Lena is waiting for them. She tells him she wants to see him suffer and then shoots Helen in the stomach! Shit!

The Tourist Series 2 Episode 4 Recap

As the fourth episode of The Tourist begins, a young Niamh (Maeve Smyth) opens a luggage. In the present, Niamh (Olwen Fouere) tells Tomasz (Raresh DiMofte) she is going for a walk. She retrieves the luggage and begins screaming. She buries it just like she did in the past. A young Niamh gets into a vehicle with a man who says his wife is pregnant. In the present, Elliot (Jamie Dornan) speaks to Frank (Francis Magee) on the phone. Frank calls him Eugene, but Elliot prefers the name Elliot. They begin talking about Fergal being Elliot’s son. Fergal doesn’t know that Donal is not his biological father. Frank makes it clear it is not Elliot’s place to tell him.

elliot and fergal s02e02 the tourist

Elliot wants to speak to him, but Frank reminds him that he didn’t bother speaking to him back then. Frank offers to let him speak to Fergal if Elliot does something for him first. He explains that the cargo plane was carrying something his father sent him. Frank sent someone down to get it. He didn’t come back and he believes Niamh is the reason. If Elliot gets that item for him, he can have the father-son thing with Fergal. Elliot agrees to speak to Niamh about it. Frank confirms Elliot Stanley went down into the plane with Niamh. Ethan Krum (Greg Larsen) tells Helen Chambers (Danielle Macdonald) about mansplaining. Helen says she broke up with him so it is over. Elliot interrupts to tell Helen he has to go away.

Elliot borrows Ethan’s car. In the car, Helen tells Elliot about Niamh killing Briain. They talk about Elliot’s kid who is an idiot. Helen believes coming here was a mistake, but Elliot says they can’t keep running away. She asks Elliot about something they found in his rucksack. Detective Slater (Conor MacNeill) sits near Ethan and gets a drink. Slater says there is no coming back from this, but Ethan tries to convince him otherwise. Ethan offers to buy him a scotch. Donal goes home where he tells Claire that the moon is laughing at him. He asks her about bending over and letting Eugene Cassidy put his baby inside her. Claire (Siobhan O’Kelly) says he is upstairs before Donal slaps her.

Fergal walks in and learns that Donal isn’t his father. Niamh laughs when she learns that Elliot is Fergal’s father. At one point, Helen calls Niamh her mother-in-law. They tell Niamh that Frank wants something his dad sent him. Niamh says a guy got ahold of a bottle of Macallan Michael Dillon at auction that was worth seven figures. He called it a barley branch and extended it to Frank in hopes of finishing the family feud. They went fishing to discuss it. Frank smashed the bottle off the side of the boat and slit the man’s throat. That’s why her brother is not sitting with them. Outside, a man calls to let someone know they’re inside the house now. Niamh promises she didn’t take anything from Frank, but she insists she can find a way to help.

Elliot s02e01 the tourist recap

She offers to let them stay there for the night. In private, Helen complains about Elliot’s decision to stay. Helen thinks it might be a good idea to leave, but Elliot wants to get answers. Fergal talks to Claire about his dad. Claire insists Donal is still his dad and he is still a McDonnell. Fergal says he is not going tomorrow because he doesn’t need to learn Irish. A group of men is shown in the back of a vehicle. Elliot asks Helen about the ring. She says it is in the bag at the police station. Helen isn’t sure she’d know what she would say until he actually asks. Moments later, Niamh yells for them to have sex quieter. Seconds later, they learn that they have company. Before long, they were involved in a gunfight inside the house.

Niamh and the others catch up with Tomasz who says there are tens of them. Once they escape, Elliot and Helen wake up in a caravan. Claire talks to Fergal before dropping him off. She insists this is the best place for him right now since they’re going to stir things up. There is a war coming and this place will help Fergal find out who he is. Fergal goes inside and learns they’re only allowed to speak Irish, but he is unable to do that. He explains he is there because Frank wants him to reconnect with where he’s from although where he’s from is a lie. Niamh calls Monsieur Tiote and blames him for sending Frank’s people to his doorstep. Elliot and Helen learn that many people died last night. Niamh tells Elliot that Fergal is on the phone and he wants to talk to him.

Elliot admits he isn’t good at this sort of thing. They discuss the possibility of meeting without Fergal’s family knowing. Helen asks Niamh about Claire. Niamh tells Elliot he should take some of her people to be safe when he meets Fergal. Elliot refuses because he doesn’t want to spook Fergal. In the car, Helen and Elliot talk about why Elliot always thinks the worst of himself. He thinks she is trying to dig into his past to find a way to prove he is a good person and didn’t do those awful things. Elliot says people are dead because of his actions and nothing will change that. Frank talks to Claire and blames her for not keeping her legs closed. Frank says Fergal is a Cassidy although Claire thinks otherwise. He hopes she realizes people are going to hear about this.

Fergal s02e04 the tourist

Frank says Fergal has something to prove now. He says she shouldn’t be making too much of a racket since she played a big part in all of this. Helen wonders if it is a good idea for Elliot to meet Fergal. Elliot says Fergal is the reason he is alive. They get ready to approach Fergal until they see someone else with him. Elliot says the first thing his son did was sentence him to death. He believes Helen can’t accept who he is. They see a man nearby so Elliot approaches and grabs him. Helen gets his gun before Elliot takes it. They ask the man where Fergal is. They learn that Fergal is at The Mountcarrick Hotel. They lock the man in the boot of a car. Elliot tells Helen that he wouldn’t have killed him. Fergal is surprised to see Elliot outside. He approaches him outside to talk.

They agree to go inside to talk since it is raining. Donal lets the man out of the boot. Helen decides to step outside so Elliot and Fergal can talk privately. Fergal says Frank made him call even though he didn’t want to do it. Fergal asks if Elliot thinks they look alike. Elliot believes Donal is more of his dad. Elliot knows he hurt a lot of people, but he says he is different now. The person he is now wouldn’t run away from Fergal. He is trying to take responsibility for his actions. Outside, Donal pulls a gun on Helen. Elliot comes out surrounded by Frank’s men moments later. They’re driven to a secluded place. Elliot tries to convince Donal to let Helen go. Lena approaches them. Fergal continues his lessons. Lena admits she sent the letter. The photo was some guy Elliot went to school with.

She knew he wouldn’t be able to resist learning about his past. Lena wants Elliot to suffer like she did. She saw the people she loved die because of him. Lena wants to film this for Mila’s son since she died on the plane. Then, she shoots Helen.

The Tourist Review

This episode of The Tourist was the tipping point where I genuinely stopped caring about the story and the characters. The other episodes were ludicrous, but they weren’t necessarily boring. Unfortunately, this episode fits into the latter category. Really, this episode probably could’ve been skipped besides a few minutes here and there.

Even with the gun battles, the episode was dull. Not to mention the cop presence is pretty much nonexistent. After all, they’re having gun battles with countless deaths and the cops are nowhere to be found. Plus, the real gun battle wasn’t even shown on camera.

The relationship between Elliot and Helen doesn’t work because there is no chemistry there. It works in a sense of being cringe like the rest of the series so far but nothing more. One performance in particular is consistently bad because it is so far over the top. With two episodes left, this is going nowhere fast.

The episode scores a 4.5 out of 10. Recaps of The Tourist can be found on Reel Mockery here . Find out how to support our independent site at this link . Learn more about advertising with us here . Discuss this series and more with friends at the Reel Mockery Forum .
