Lighthouse Family’s Tunde announces solo 2023 tour

Pip Ellwood-Hughes

Tunde, the voice of Lighthouse Family, is going on tour in the UK throughout May and June 2023.

The singer will be performing Lighthouse Family favourites such as ‘Lifted', ‘High' and ‘Ocean Drive', as well as previewing his new collection of 1970s songwriter era inspired recordings. Fans can expect to hear songs from singer-songwriters such as Bill Withers, Elton John, Van Morrison and others.

The Lighthouse Family released their debut album ‘Ocean Drive’ in 1995, with the lead single ‘Lifted' reaching the top five on the UK Singles Chart. ‘Ocean Drive’ was certified six-times platinum by the end of 1997, selling more than 1.8 million copies in the UK alone and spending 154 weeks on the UK Album Chart.

Lighthouse Family’s follow-up albums, ‘Postcards from Heaven’ achieved similar status in 1997, reaching 6 times Platinum status, and ‘Whatever Gets You Through the Day’ also receiving Platinum status.

They subsequently sold over 15 million albums throughout their career.

Tunde’s first self-titled solo album was released in 2004, with his second solo album, ‘Diamond In A Rock’, released in 2013. In 2019, Lighthouse Family released a new album ‘Blue Sky in Your Head’. It was the group’s first album in 18 years and was supported with two sell-out UK tours.

Over the past few years, Tunde has been working on a new collection of recordings, inspired by the artists and the singer-songwriter era of the 1970’s. Reunited with Lighthouse Family producer Mike Peden, they have recorded a selection of troubadour influenced songs.

"As one of the Duran Duran guys said to me: ‘What do you want to go in the studio for? That’s where all the arguments happen! Go and do some gigs...’ So, that’s what we did, and it was great.”

“What happens when Tunde and I get in the studio is, we just drift off –we don’t ever row!” he added. “There’s no shouting or throwing things. In fact we only ever had one argument - but it lasted 20 years!"

My daughter & I had an absolutely fantastic evening, my birthday treat :)

The venue was amazing (apart from all the building work going on in Birmingham!!)

Warm up act, Georgie was wonderful beautiful voice.

Enjoyed all the old favourite songs and some excellent new material.

Both Tunde & Paul looked as if they were genuinely enjoying themselves and glad to be back touring, very emotional.

Would definitely recommend to both Lighthouse Family fans and all music lovers.

"Lifted" is one of those nostalgic songs that transports you right back to the mid 90s, when Lighthouse Family were in their prime. Listening to their hits as well as their back catalogue of lesser known tracks, they were the duo that I could listen to time and time again, without getting the slightest bit bored of their three fantastically unique albums.

When I saw that they were touring in 2011, I was lucky enough to get my hands on a bunch of tickets for my friends and I, and what can I say, we certainly weren't disappointed. No one really knew what to expect as it was so long since they had last played together, but if anything they seemed to have improved in their 10 years of absence. Their dedication to the performance and audience was astounding, interacting enthusiastically, and putting new spins on some of their classics.

They opened with "High", my absolute favourite song, and from the opening chord had the entire audience engaged. The atmosphere was electric, full of dedicated fans who had waited several years for the performance, and everyone was singing along. Tunde would sing lines of their most famous tracks, and then hold out the microphone for the audience to fill in the chorus which was great fun. The energy was maintained throughout the entire performance, and even when they played some of their unreleased songs, they engaged the audience with short explanations of the songs, and paired them alongside their hits to keep the audience engaged.

If you're a fan and they tour again, you must check them out whilst you still have the chance. It was well worth the wait.

A genuine staple of the UK charts throughout the nineties, whatever you think about Lighthouse Family - or any perceived level of coolness, or otherwise, that you might associate with them - there’s no question whatsoever that they earned the commercial success that made them a household name across the UK back in their heyday. They were an unusual proposition, sonically; frontman Tunde Baiyewu delivered his vocals in a dulcet, smooth style that was easy on the ears - hence their often-unfair pigenholing as an easy listening act - whilst his partner in crime, keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist Paul Tucker, summoned up soundscapes that were genuinely interesting at times, and that guaranteed chart success with the likes of ‘High’, ‘Lifted’ and ‘Loving Every Minute’. Right up until their dissolution in 2003, Lighthouse Family remained a popular live act, fleshing out their songs with a full band and performing to some seriously big crowds across the UK. They officially reformed in 2010, but that’s failed to bear any recorded fruit yet, although their live comeback was met with huge singalongs and impressive ticket sales back in 2011 - don’t write off a second stab at the charts just yet, with the public appetite for the band clearly still a sharp one.

LIGHTHOUSE FAMILY Return after 18 Years with new album ‘Blue Sky In Your Head’ + November UK Tour

LIGHTHOUSE FAMILY Return after 18 Years with new album 'Blue Sky In Your Head' + November UK Tour

Messages of hope and uplift. Sentiments of community and communion. Songs of love and connection. Tunes to sing, loudly, from the heart. It can only be Lighthouse Family, back to dream up the magic all over again. “I like hymns, always have. I was in the choir as a kid,” adds Tunde. “I think all the songs on the record have that feel. They’re urban hymns.”

Indeed, the new album has something that has always been present with Lighthouse Family: a sense of optimism and renewal. “We’re trying to create something anthemic and uplifting but real,” says Paul. “That idea of: ‘I know the sun’s gonna shine again’, it’s quintessential Lighthouse Family.”

“And that’s kind of you what you want Lighthouse Family songs to do: put a Blue Sky In Your Head,” adds Paul.

‘Blue Sky In Your Head’ opens with the rippling, rolling, title track. Its theme is, says Tunde, similar to ‘Ocean Drive’. “A dream of a place, a dream of escape, something you want to get away to.”

Those years have not dulled Lighthouse Family’s remarkable ability to craft elegantly beautiful songs. Their first single in almost two decades, ‘My Salvation’ is an upbeat track that flies high on lush strings and has echoes of Pet Shop Boys at their imperial best. Inspired in part by the birth of Paul’s son, its sentiments chime perfectly with the band’s return. “I wrote it at the end of 2016, when there were lots of things changing in politics and it felt like there was nothing solid to hold on to. There’s the line: ‘When you say a prayer, does anybody hear, send an SOS…’ You’re looking for that touchstone that salvation can bring.”

Check out the video for ‘My Salvation’ – BELOW:

“What happens when Tunde and I get in the studio is, we just drift off – we don’t ever row!” says Paul. “There’s no shouting or throwing things. In fact we only ever had one argument – but it lasted 20 years!”

The old itch was still there, though, and by the time the band reunited again in 2016 they were determined to make a record, something that was classic Lighthouse Family, but also sounded like it could be made today. Bunkered in a north London studio, the old friends and collaborators quickly found their groove.

“Somehow we couldn’t knock it together in the studio,” says Paul. “So we decided to go and do some shows, to remind ourselves who we are and what we do. As one of the Duran Duran guys said to me: ‘What do you want to go in the studio for? That’s where all the arguments happen! Go and do some gigs…’ So, that’s what we did, and it was great.”

In the intervening years Paul formed a band, The Orange Lights, while Tunde released two solo albums, but the old connection between the pair remained, and in 2010 they got back together with a view to making a fourth album.

The 1997 follow-up, ‘Postcards From Heaven’, featured three Top Ten singles – ‘Raincloud’, ‘High’ and ‘Lost in Space’ – and also went six-times platinum, charting across Europe, the Far East, Australia and New Zealand. Their third album, ‘Whatever Gets You Through The Day’ (2001) produced another Top Ten single in the shape of ‘(I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be) Free/One’, but by this time the band were at breaking point, their friendship burnt out after years on the road living in each others’ pockets. And both of them were heartbroken by grief. Paul’s father had died, and he sought solace in the rock’n’roll lifestyle. While Tunde had lost his mother, a situation complicated by the fact that his stepfather, Olusegun Obasanjo, was at the time the President of Nigeria. Little wonder the duo badly needed a break.

Tunde Baiyewu and Paul Tucker formed Lighthouse Family after meeting at Newcastle University in the early 1990s. Their 1995 debut album ‘Ocean Drive’ was a slow-burning success, going six times platinum while staying in the album charts for almost three years. ‘Lifted’ became one the defining songs of the era, a pop-soul classic that was inescapable on radio, becoming the soundtrack of high street Britain, drivetime Britain and night-out Britain.

‘Blue Sky In Your Head’ is Lighthouse Family’s fourth album, and sees them back on their original label Polydor and reunited with Colin Barlow, the A&R that discovered them, and their first manager, Keith Armstrong; the same team that was around them when they were at their FM Radio-dominating peak.

The duo will follow the album’s release with a UK tour later this year, culminating at the iconic London Palladium on November 22 on Polydor and will include ‘Essentials’, all the bands classic songs remastered for the very first time to celebrate their 25-year recording history.  The lead single is ‘My Salvation’, a lushly melodic track every bit as good as you’d expect from the band that produced the timeless hits ‘Lifted’, ‘High’, and ‘Ocean Drive’, which are all included on ‘Essentials’.The Lighthouse Family, one of the most successful bands of the late 90s and early 00s, return with a new studio album after a gap of 18 years. ‘Blue Sky In Your Head’ will be released on May 3

Lighthouse Family announce split and cancelled performances: 'It’s been an incredible adventure'

Virgin Radio

8 Jun 2022, 12:41

Paul Tucker and Tunde Baiyewu from The Lighthouse Family

After 28 years together, the Lighthouse Family have decided to part ways.

Keyboardist Paul Tucker announced the sad news on Facebook, and explained that vocalist Tunde Baiyewu is leaving to concentrate on his solo career.

The duo, who released huge hits such as Lifted and Ocean Drive, last put out new music together in 2019, and were due to perform at the Mouth of the Tyne Festival near Newcastle.

In the social media post, Paul confirmed the band would no longer attend the festival, and they wouldn't be performing together.

In the lengthy statement, Paul wrote: “I’m so sad to let you know that after almost thirty years we have reached the end of our Lighthouse Family journey. Having set off from our little basement studio in Newcastle in 1993 it’s been an incredible adventure beyond our wildest dreams. Thank you all for all your love and support through the years, we could not have done it without you.

“I’m so sorry that this means that our headline show at Mouth Of The Tyne Festival on 9th July is now cancelled. I have tried everything with our agents and promoters over the last few weeks to make this work but we just couldn’t get it over the line.

“Tunde now wants to focus on his solo career and I wish him all the best. I would like to say sorry to the promoters and to all of you who have tickets for this show and have waited through the last two years.

Having started in Newcastle back in 1993, Paul added that he was excited for the hometown gig, and to play near to the lighthouses that inspired their name.

The musician finished the statement saying: “ I am as disappointed as you are. It breaks my heart to let you down.”

Mouth of the Tyne festival organisers are now looking for a replacement act to take over the Lighthouse Family’s slot, with Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Keane and Newton Faulkner already headlining the July festival.

In their near 30-year career, the Lighthouse Family released four albums, all of which landed in the UK top 10.

A Tour of the Family Beach Area at Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point

The family beach area at Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point spans well over 500 yards on the Atlantic Ocean coastline of Eleuthera with loungers, chairs, and umbrellas. The Family Beach area is noted by the number 8 on the map, but in reality, the family beach spans from the south end to the where the adult only area begins at Serenity Bay, approximately in the vicinity of True-True BBQ Too.

DCL Disney Lookout Cay At Lighthouse Point Directory Map Atlantic Ocean 20240502

Like most beach environments, you will likely encounter changes in the sea conditions and marine life throughout the day. There are beach caution signs placed at various access points providing a more details on the potential conditions.

Lookout Cay Family Beach Caution Sign

Due to weather, ocean currents, marine life, or other conditions in the area, swimming in the ocean or other activities may be restricted or unavailable at times. Guests should always swim near lifeguards and follow their instructions. There may be times when access to the ocean for swimming or other activities may be unavailable due to weather, ocean currents, marine life, or other conditions in the area.

You may notice some flags along the beach. These are visual markers placed by the lifeguards to identify different ocean and surf conditions, which vary from hour-to-hour and place-to-place. For example, a green flag indicates calm conditions with good swimming conditions, a red flag indicates high surf and/or strong currents, and the lifeguards will limit the swimming area near shore, and a black flag means the water is off limits, but you are still permitted on the beach.

Lookout Cay Beach Warning Flags Green

One major difference between the beach access at Lookout Cay compared to Castaway Cay is that you access walk-across elevated walkways spanning sand dunes, which are in place to provide a physical barrier and protection to inland structures during storms thus limiting the impact of storm surge and potential damage from high waves.

Lookout Cay Family Beach Dunes Elevated Walkway

The natural sand dunes have been preserved to provide protection for wildlife and the beaches. Just like dunes elsewhere: Please stay off the dunes! – I am not familiar with the regulations in The Bahamas, but it is illegal to walk on the dunes in Florida . The design plan for Lookout Cay worked to preserve the shrub-filled sand dunes, which act as an important animal habitat and helps to maintain the island’s natural shoreline.

There are rows of beach chairs and umbrellas before you cross the dunes. In most areas, the lower elevation of the beach allows for a view of the beautiful turquoise waters.

Lookout Cay Family Beach Dune Seating

There are elevated walkways with stairs and some with ramps providing beach access. Most walkways and venues around Lookout Cay feed into the beach access points.

Lookout Cay Family Beach Dunes Elevated Walkway

I have been fortunate to visit many amazing beaches in my life, and Lighthouse Beach did not disappoint. It is gorgeous and frankly, my pictures and video do not due it justice. While not a vibrant pink beach as one may see in photos, Lighthouse Beach sand is considered a pink sand which gets it’s pale pink color from microscopic coral insects, known as Foraminifera, which have a bright pink or red shell full of holes through which it extends pseudopodia, footings that it uses to attach itself and feed ( Link and description is specific to Harbor Island Pink Sand Beach which is in North Eleuthera , about 90 miles north of Lighthouse Point.)

Lookout Cay Family Beach

You will notice white buoy bags out in the water, these are used to define the available swimming area which is enforced by the lifeguards.

Lookout Cay Family Beach

Here is some video of the family beach from different access points starting with a spot near the Reef & Wreck Bar earlier in our day ashore followed by the Goombay Cultural Center in the afternoon.

The beach is amazing and this will be one of my most controversial statements made on this website – Disney Lookout Cay family beach is exponentially better than the family beach at Castaway Cay . For those that have been, what do you think about the family beach at Lighthouse Point?

Did you go in the water? Wondering how quickly it gets deep and current. I love to swim and I know Castaway Key was swimming was easy in the family beach area. Wondering how it is without a secluded cove. We are going next April on the Fantasy. I am enjoying all the previews I am getting.

' src=

I made it in up to my knees a couple of times, but I didn’t have much time sit back relax and really swim.

' src=

Thank you for all this information. We have cancelled our cruise to this nightmare destination. I would advise anyone who is thinking of changing their cruise to do so right away as cabins our filling up quickly for those cruises that go to Castaway Cay.

' src=

Scott, are people bringing chairs/umbrellas down to the beach or is the cruise line putting them there? I thought I read that all the chairs/umbrellas were behind the berm.

The chairs, loungers, and umbrellas are placed by Disney Cruise Line. Guests are asked to not move beach chairs from their designated locations.

Just for clarification: does the beach have pink sand? Some videos I’ve seen make it look pink-ish, but most it just looks white…Are the ones with the pink sand a completely different area somewhere on a nearby beach that most won’t have free access to?

Search resumes for missing swimmer at Evanston's Lighthouse Beach

Good Samaritan helped rescue 3 other swimmers

WLS logo

EVANSTON, Ill. (WLS) -- Lighthouse Beach in Evanston officially reopened to swimming Tuesday morning when lifeguards came on duty as the search continues for a missing swimmer.

The beach was closed all day Monday as recovery efforts for the missing 41-year-old continued. Those efforts restarting Tuesday, albeit, in a pared down manner.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

A surface and shoreline search is what Evanston's Fire Department said it conducted Tuesday morning as the effort to recover the body of a man who went missing off of Lighthouse Beach Sunday afternoon entered a third day. The man apparently drowned after witnesses said he and a woman jumped in to help two teenage girls who had gotten into trouble.

"It just didn't look like everything was going well so I got down to my shorts and jumped in water, grabbed mother and the daughter and one of the other girls and pulled them up," Joe Flanagan, who rescued the people in the water, said.

Up to ten agencies were involved in the initial effort to find the 41-year-old, making use of sonar and other technologies, but to no avail. Tuesday morning, Evanston's fire department put three of their vessels in the water

"We have trained personnel doing visual searches," Evanston Fire Chief Matt Smith said. "We also involved the use of an aerial drone to have faster more accurate and zooming capabilities along the shoreline. And any water than can be visualized. Unfortunately with the conditions remaining difficult to view in the lake we were not able to visualize anything at this point."

According to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project 16 people have drowned in Lake Michigan so far this year. A beach hazard statement was in effect Sunday when this latest incident happened, with a red flag warning in place alerting swimmers to not get into the water.

Evanston only just instituted the flag system this year. With Fourth of July weekend coming up, officials are pleading with beachgoers to be safe.

"It doesn't matter how strong of a swimmer you are," Evanston Fire Field Chief Sean Malloy said. "At the end of the day. Those currents are going to take you out there. Just be careful. Follow the advice of lifeguards. Follow the advice of any signage and try to stay out of the water if conditions aren't good."

Because of water conditions, the search has been suspended once again, but officials said they will restart as conditions merit of actionable information becomes available.

Who are the luckiest people in the world? At least for theater fans, the answer is “people who need people,” a line made famous well over half a century ago by Barbra Streisand in the original production of the musical “Funny Girl.”

THEATER REVIEW

WHAT: “Funny Girl: the Musical” by Maine State Music Theatre

WHERE: Pickard Theater, Bowdoin College Campus, Brunswick

REVIEWED: June 28 (matinee); continues through July 13

TICKETS: Starting at $93

CONTACT: 207-725-8769, msmt.org

On the heels of the show’s recent Broadway revival, the Maine State Music Theatre has opened a spirited production of the classic musical on its home stage at the Pickard Theater on the campus of Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

The show primarily captures the rousing excitement of early musical theater while unavoidably making us think about how it launched the career of Streisand. At a lengthy but enjoyable two-and-one-half hours, plus intermission, it’s a show that still charms with its memorable songs, old-style comedy and bittersweet love story.

The impressive production, directed and choreographed by Kenny Ingram and with the time-honored music of Jule Styne, lyrics by Bob Merrill and book by Isobel Lennart, tells the semi-fictionalized story of Fanny Brice, a real-life figure who rose from humble origins to showbiz stardom as a give-it-everything-you’ve-got performer in the early 20th century.

At first socially awkward and vulnerable, but with a unique talent and an admirable determination to succeed, Fanny gained the attention of famed impresario Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. and went on to star in many of his glitzy stage shows. At the same time, Fanny’s personal life was a bit of a rollercoaster ride.

Jenna Lea Rosen takes the lead role and scores comedically with her initially wide-eyed approach to Fanny’s personal and professional challenges. Armed with a feisty “New Yawk” accent, the actress easily takes charge of backstage, front stage and offstage scenes. Her vocals are compelling on both comic numbers (“Sadie, Sadie” and “Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat”) and in more intimate moments (“People” and “Don’t Rain On My Parade”). Advertisement

Douglas Raymond Williams plays Fanny’s handsome rogue of a love interest who brings her to a fuller life but fails her in the end. His opera-trained vocals alongside Rosen (“I Want to be Seen With You” and “You are Woman, I am Man”) establish both the heat and uncertainties within their relationship.

Among the many standout secondary actors and choristers, Tyler Johnson-Campion is a tap-dancing whiz. His work with Sue Cella, who plays Fanny’s mom, is a treat on “Who Taught Her Everything.” Cella also has some fun moments squabbling with a competitive friend played by Maine State favorite Charis Leos.

Tommy Betz shines as a Tenor and David Girolmo returns to the Pickard stage as the stern but supportive Mr. Ziegfeld. Jeremiah Valentino Porter gets to toot a hot horn on “Cornet Man.”

The Maine State Music Theatre Orchestra, led by Jason Wetzel, mixes up the period flavors with a newer Broadway expansiveness. The costumes designed by J. Theresa Bush and scenic design by Jeffrey D. Kmiec take the audience back to a distant era when musical theater and its early stars were on the rise.
