Lady’s 21 Places You Have to Discover on the Thames in London

I was having dinner overlooking the Thames the other week and I started thinking about how many amazing places there are along the river in London. As I soaked up the view, I picked out my favorites. Now I want to share them, so today I bring you 21 amazing places to see on the Thames in London.

Places to See on the Thames in London

21 Places to See on the Thames in London

The following is an east-to-west list of riverfront spots in London I’ve come to love. From famous landmarks to secret gardens , there’s no shortage of gems along the water. I hope you enjoy discovering them as much as I have.

St Katharine Docks

1. Thames Barrier

I recently had my first up-close look at the Thames Barrier, the flood barrier that protects London from aggressive tides and storm surges. I previously thought it was more functional than aesthetic, but it turns out it’s a work of art in its own right.

Thames Barrier

2. Emirates Air Line

One of the most unusual ways of traveling in London is by air. The Emirates Air Line cable car soars over east London and offers views of everything from the 02 to Canary Wharf .

It’s a good way to see a different side of the city from a unique angle.

Emirates Air Line

3. Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich

Whenever I’m in Greenwich I love seeing the view of the Queen’s House through the Old Royal Naval College.

The symmetry of the buildings and grandeur of their design is beautiful from any angle, but it’s particularly lovely from the river and the hill.

Greenwich, London

4. St Katharine Docks

St Katharine Docks always transports me into another world.

The boats in the marina are reminiscent of the seaside, and the shops, restaurants, and markets always offer me something new to discover. I love the flower-covered facade of the local pub, too.

St Katharine Docks

5. Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge is one of London’s most iconic feats of engineering. Its Victorian style and eye-catching towers make me reach for my camera every time I’m on the Thames.

Tower Bridge

6. Tower of London

Speaking of towers, the Tower of London is one of the city’s oldest and most revered landmarks. With layers of history and sparkling jewels, it deserves its place among the top places to see on the Thames in London.

Tower of London

7. Borough Market

For food, there’s no better place along the river than Borough Market . Grazing through the stalls and taking in the smells and colors could occupy me all day (and often does).

Borough Market Cheese

8. Shakespeare’s Globe

When I’m in the mood for theater, Shakespeare’s Globe is the perfect riverfront stage. Whether I go for a classic play or something modern, I know I’m in for a treat.

9. Tate Modern

Next door is Tate Modern, one of the most visited museums in the world. The art is lovely to look at, as are the views from the terrace on the top floor of its Switch House.

Tate Modern

10. OXO Tower

Just down the river, the OXO Tower not only illuminates the night sky with its neon letters, but also offers some of the best views of the Thames from its restaurant terrace.

I had my aforementioned dinner here and couldn’t stop staring at the City skyline.

OXO Tower

11. London Eye

Equally impressive are the vistas from the London Eye, one of the city’s most iconic contemporary landmarks. I’ve conquered my fear of heights twice just to get a glimpse.

London Eye

12. Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament

The highlights of a ride on the London Eye are two more of the best places to see on the Thames in London. Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament are some of the most recognizable symbols of the city.

Big Ben

13. Tate Britain

Down the way is Tate Britain, another of London’s great art museums.

Its permanent collection and temporary exhibitions both draw me in for frequent visits, and I love having lunch at the restaurant’s outdoor tables in the summer.

Tate Britain

14. Chelsea Physic Garden

When I’m in the mood for nature, I beat a path to the Chelsea Physic Garden. This green space is full of medicinal plants and botanical beauties from around the world, and it’s the perfect respite from the busy streets.

Chelsea Physic Garden

15. Hurlingham Club

As is the Hurlingham Club. This private venue in Fulham is worth getting invited to for its lush gardens and sprawling croquet lawns. I enjoyed an afternoon barbecue here last summer and could have stayed all season.

16. Thames Path in Hammersmith and Chiswick

Up a bend in the river, the Thames Path in Hammersmith and Chiswick is one of my favorite places to walk along the water . From the cozy pubs to the beautiful houses, this stretch delights me every time.

Boat in the Thames

17. Kew Gardens

Around another bend lies Kew Gardens , one of the city’s most impressive green spaces.

I could spend all day walking through the grounds, but the real highlight is the collection of historic glasshouses that transport me straight back to Victorian England.

Kew Gardens

18. Syon Park

Across the river is Syon Park , another place I like to wander. It too has a glasshouse, but the weeping trees and arched bridges are equally lovely.

Syon Park

19. Richmond Pubs

When my feet need a rest, Richmond is one of the most welcome places to see on the Thames in London.

Its waterfront pubs are some of the best places to soak up the sun on warm days, and the neighborhood atmosphere makes the experience all the more pleasurable.

Boat in Richmond, London

20. Eel Pie Island

My most exciting surprise along the river has been Eel Pie Island . This gem in the Thames is full of quirky houses and artists’ studios, making it a great place to explore the unexpected.

Eel Pie Island

21. Hampton Court Palace

Way out west, Hampton Court Palace is one of London’s most impressive royal residences. I love how the interiors are rich in history and the gardens full of secret mazes and colorful blossoms.

Hampton Court Palace

There are a lot more places to discover along the waterfront, but I hope these give you a good base to start from. Someday I would love to venture up or down the river, but for now London is keeping me busy enough.

What are your favorite places to see on the Thames in London?

22 Comments on Lady’s 21 Places You Have to Discover on the Thames in London

I’ve seen most of these but I still have to visit Kew, Richmond and Hampton court palace:)

I hope you can get to them sometime soon!

For me, it’s the opposite: I’m way more familiar with the western end of the Thames. I think it’s now a bucket list item for me to visit all these, maybe walking the route over two days? I’m currently reading “Mindful London” and there are some lovely river/water based ideas in that.

That’s a good bucket list item! I hope you enjoy exploring.

The emirates air line is so cool! I prefer it as an attraction than the Eye.

I love a good walk along the river and the best part is that you will always find a new gem. Some of the places that you mentioned in this post, I’ve never been to but now I feel like I need to head out for a new walk when I next have a weekend free.

Nice! I hope you enjoy it when you go.

I have visited most but not all of these and am inclined to agree with your selection. I might include either the Old Thameside Inn (which is not at all old, really!) or the Oystershed as well, and perhaps Southwark Cathedral? But still, it is a personal list and 21 is quite a lot already. How about the Museum of London Docklands? I have been a couple of times but need to go again before I can give you a thorough recommendation – I did not allow enough time!

wow what a comprehensive post! I didn’t know about the fabulously named Eel pie island! I think Barnes village is also worth an explore along the thames and although it has been done 100 times there is usually something on at southbank. Oh and the thames clipper is my favourite way to travel down the river and see all these wonderful things!

Yeah, Barnes is lovely! I always enjoy visiting.

Thanks for the list! I was excited to see this as walking The Thames is one of my favorite things to do in London. Hard to think of my favorite, but I would say my favorite so far was relaxing while having lunch on the terrace at The Anchor Bankside, with the views of the Thames and St. Paul’s Cathedral, among others! Or maybe watching the sunset from the Queens Walk.

Good suggestions!

Great piece – I’ve never heard of Eel Pie island so just read your other post from a few years back. Sounds like such an intriguing place – in the middle of the Thames – who’d have thought!

Yeah, it’s such a great hidden spot!

I have visited London so many times, and every time I find there’s more to discover! Thanks for this post, I’ll be exploring many of these places on my next visit 🙂

You’re welcome! I hope you have fun exploring.

Thanks for this helpful post.Im visiting London first time and after reading about the 21 places, I’m very excited.

You’re welcome!

I enjoy taking long walks along the river because there is always something new to discover. I haven’t been to some of the places you mentioned in this post, I think I’ll go on a new walk the next time I have a weekend off.

I’m glad you want to! I hope you enjoy discovering new places.

River Thames Cruise Prices and Reviews

What is the best london river cruise.

take a trip along the thames

While our free London walking tours are a great way to see and learn a lot about the city, Thames River cruises offer a completely different perspective that you might also enjoy - I certainly do!

In this post I am going to detail all the different options you have for cruising through London, as well as sharing some of my experiences and top tips.

The most popular type of river cruise is a hop-on hop-off tour , allowing you to stop and get off the boat at various docks on the Thames.

Here are the top cruise services in London:

City Cruises

Uber Boat by Thames Clippers

Thames river service.

There are also special cruise services such as Tate to Tate by Thames Clippers , connecting both historic museums by boat.

Alternatively, you might also want to consider a circular loop without any stops, or perhaps a speedboat ride during the summer.

Like many cities, there are also lunch and dinner cruises available on the Thames River.

If you're in North London (where I live), you might want to consider a canal cruise around Little Venice and Camden Lock instead.

Concerned about the price? Check my list of combo packages that include a Thames River cruise for free!

Although I do my best to provide a balanced look at these services, it's important to get other perspectives, so I've also included a selection of recommendations from members of our London Travel Tips Facebook group.

Disclosure:  While my recommendations are always unbiased, Tours by Foot may receive a small share of sales through some of the links below at no cost to you. See the  full text .

TIP: When planning your boat tour or cruise, make sure to check out the  weather in London beforehand.

HOP-ON-HOP-OFF THAMES RIVER CRUISES

If you’re looking for a boat tour or cruise that will allow you the freedom to explore at your own pace, consider one of the following companies.

Although there aren’t many London boat services that specialize specifically in hop-on-hop-off Thames cruises, there are a few that provide the opportunity to explore London however you wish.

You can choose to purchase one single ride, a cheaper return ticket, or a 24-hour travel pass with unlimited rides.

TIP: Many of these cruises are included for free or at a lower cost with any of the many London tourist attraction passes available to you.

City Cruises is probably the most well-known company offering a basic Thames River cruise. They are also the best value for the money, in my opinon.

City Cruises also offers speedboat tours and lunch and dinner cruises .

City Cruises offers both single tickets (which are fine) and a hop-on-hop-off service with 4 stops between Westminster and Greenwich (which is better).

The hop-on-hop-off ticket is called the River Pass and I bought this one just recently, when the spring weather finally hit London!

I used it to get me from Greenwich and back primarily, but I did make an impromptu stop at London Bridge to grab lunch at Borough Market.

I bought the River Pass, which gave me 24-hour unlimited access to the River on City Cruises Boats.

Even though I'm a tour guide, I enjoy going on other people's tours so I really enjoyed the live commentary on the journeys I took.

I was happy for the 24 hour pass, but if you want more time on the boat, you can get a 72-hour River Pass giving you three days to use the service, rather than the 24-hour pass I bought.

Since the weather was good, I sat on the open-aired top of the boat - but there is inside seating downstairs if the London weather gets a bit wet or chilly.

TIP:  City Cruises' hop-on-hop-off service is  included for free for holders of a London Pass , a tourist attraction concession card. It is also  included for free  with the purchase of a 24 or 48-hour hop-on, hop-off open-top bus ticket with Tootbus Tours.

Prices start at £10.80/adult (16+), £7.05/child (5-15), and free for infants 4 and under.

See their full list of single and return ticket prices here .

If you are planning on taking at least two rides, I recommend that you buy a River Pass.

This pass gives you unlimited travel between their piers.

River Pass Tickets

  • £24 Adults (16+)
  • £16.00 for Children (5-15)
  • Free for Infants (4 and under)

Cruises run every 30 minutes. (Frequency changes seasonally).

Exact departure times depend on which pier you wish to depart from.

But, as soon as I got to the piers I was able to check the display board to see exactly how long I would need to wait for the next service.

Highlights along the cruise include the London Eye, OXO Tower, London Bridge, The Shard, Tower of London, Tower Bridge, and Greenwich.

TIP:  City Cruises hop-on-hop-off service is usually  included for free for holders of a London Sightseeing Pass , a tourist attraction concession card. It is also  included for free  with the purchase of a 24 or 48-hour hop-on, hop-off open-top bus ticket with Tootbus Tours.

Reviews of City Cruises

City Cruises sports a 4 out of 5 stars  rating on TripAdvisor along with mostly positive reviews.

take a trip along the thames

Thousands of reviewers have given them a 5-star rating, which is a good sign.

The negative comments that have been left often mention unforeseen technical issues with the boats or scheduling software.

I haven't personally experienced any of that myself, however.

To avoid any issues, make sure to arrive early for your cruise and call them the day before your excursion to make sure there are no problems.

Thames Clippers is a commuter boat service which, in my opinion, are a vastly underrated way to travel through town.

They offer single-journey tickets, as well as an all-day ticket, that gives you unlimited hop-on, hop-off travel for one day (between 10 am and 11 pm).

This is what I always recommend to my friends and family when they come to visit me in London.

I think it's great value for money and makes travelling through town a little more fun and I take the Uber Boat at least once a month.

One of my favourite things about it is that I can pay using my contactless debit card so there's no need to faff around with tickets!

The Uber Boat is valid in their Central and East Zone lines which include 18 piers including Greenwich, Tower, Westminster, and more. Boats depart every 20 minutes.

Some of the central London landmarks you can get to easily from the Uber Boat piers:

  • St. Paul’s Cathedral
  • Tower of London
  • Tower Bridge
  • Tate Modern
  • Covent Garden
  • Trafalgar Square
  • Borough Market
  • National Gallery of Art
  • British Museum
  • Houses of Parliament
  • Churchill War Rooms
  • HMS Belfast
  • Shakespeare's Globe
  • Palace of Westminster

You can download their free audio tour (available in English, Spanish, French, and German) if you are taking the boat for sightseeing purposes, but I feel that the journey is enjoyable even without it.

Also, to the delight of myself and my friends, you can buy alcoholic (and non) refreshments on board.

I can personally recommend the rose' wine they sell, although the pre-mixed cans of Jack Daniels and Coke seemed to be the most popular option the last time I was at the bar.

And prepare yourselves...

The boat travels at a moderate speed through the city but once we passed Tower Bridge, it sped up and I was flying past the docklands toward Canary Wharf!

It's a thrill not everybody on board was expecting.

Uber Boat Ticket Prices

  • £22.10 Adults (16+)
  • £11.05 for Children (5-15)
  • This cruise is included with the London Pass .

Thames Clippers has received a 4 out of 5 stars  rating on both TripAdvisor and Viator.

Most reviews are very positive, stating that it is great value for the money. The staff is said to be courteous and helpful, which I definitely would agree with.

Also, guests said that the boat went just fast enough to get from point A to point B efficiently while still being slow enough to enjoy sightseeing with the downloadable app, which I think is an accurate way to describe the journey.

Read reviews here .

Thames River Services (TRS) offers a variety of guided sightseeing tours that cover several different highlights along the river.

Prices and the length of the trip vary depending on what route you select.

There are a total of six different tours offered out of Westminster, Greenwich, and St. Katharine's Docks (my favourite hidden gem and place to get a drink or bite to eat after finishing my All in One Tour ).

I would recommend the Westminster to Greenwich journey to soak up all the sights on the riverfront.

Guests have the option to pay for a one-way ticket or round-trip fare, a 2 days hopper pass, or a hop-on, hop-off ticket (through Circular Cruises).

With a 4 ½ out of 5 stars  rating on both Yelp and TripAdvisor, TRS is one of the highest-rated cruise companies in London.

A majority of reviews are very positive, but there are a few negative comments.

Complaints tend to focus on the fact that this is a sightseeing cruise, which means it might not be as speedy as other services.

I find that the leisurely ride with TRS is enjoyable, but it's not the best way to travel through town via the River - that definitely goes to the UberBoats.

Other than these issues, most passengers love Thames River Services!

Find out more about Thames River Service Tours .

Tate to Tate by Thames Clippers

This route on the Thames Clippers service is the "RB2 Tate to Tate".

It takes visitors between the two Tate Museums: the free  Tate Modern  at Bankside Pier and Tate Britain at Millbank Pier.

I recently took this ride to see the latest exhibition at the Tate Britain.

Boats run every 30 minutes and when I arrived at the pier I just tapped with my contactless card to pay for my journey - like with the Uber boats.

I only needed to wait 10 minutes for the boat and the ride took me 20 minutes so I got across town in a half an hour which is great!

The boats have both outdoor seating but the weather was not great on the day I travelled so I sat indoors.

As this is not a sightseeing boat there is no live commentary, but that wasn't the purpose of my journey so I didn't mind.

You can purchase tickets in advance online from the Tate Shop website , or before you board a boat from a self-serve kiosk on the pier.

You can also use your  Oyster card , if you have one, upon boarding the boat.

When you purchase, look for the RB2 service, a central zone ticket price.

Find out more or book tickets here.

Prices (single one-way ticket)

  • Adult:  One Way - £10.90
  • Child 5 to 15:  One Way - £5.45
  • Children under 5 travel for free
  • Adult TfL Travelcard: One Way - £7.30
  • Child 5-15 TfL Travelcard: One Way - £3.65

For a complete timetable of the RB2 route that stops at both Tates, click  here for schedules.

Look for times for Bankside (the Tate Modern) and Millbank (the Tate Britain).

The Tate Boat service has been given a 4 ½ star rating on TripAdvisor.

Although it is not a full five stars, the reality is that they haven’t received any negative ratings.

There is only one complaint thus far, and it focuses on the length of time it may take to get tickets onto the boat.

I found that this is no longer a problem as I just used my contactless card so there is no need to wait for tickets these days.

But, even that reviewer suggests that you persevere and use this ferry service to get from Tate to Tate as it was worth the hassle.

Most passengers love this form of transportation, and I find it pretty reliable!

CIRCULAR LOOP THAMES RIVER SIGHTSEEING CRUISES

A circular loop cruise is specifically a river tour of the Thames.

From the boat, you will see many amazing sights such as  St. Paul’s Cathedral , the Tower of London, the Houses of Parliament , and  Big Ben .

Most circular loop cruises are about an hour long.

Note that some circular loop cruises are hop-on-hop-off while others allow you to leave the cruise at any pier, but you may not board again.

Thames River Service Circular Cruise

take a trip along the thames

This circular loop cruise allows you to hop on and off whenever you wish so that you can get a better look at the sites located all along the Thames.

The full cruise takes about an hour, but you can embark and disembark at your discretion throughout the day.

This circular cruise will take you past more than a dozen historic locations that are visible from the water.

There is commentary provided along the way to point out significant sights such as Old Scotland Yard or the Houses of Parliament.

Find more information or purchase tickets here.

Single Ticket

  • £12.90 for Adults
  • £8.90 for Children/Freedom Pass Holders

Return Ticket

  • £18.90 for Adults
  • £12.90 for Children/Freedom Pass Holders

This cruise service has been in operation for several years, but they don’t have a lot of reviews.

The few negative reviews say that the tour feels short and that you do not see so many sights.

Mostly though the reviews are positive, saying that the live commentary is very informative and humorous.

Reviews say that the boat ride was relaxing and enjoyable, and well-organized. I haven't taken this one yet myself so we will take their word for it for now!

The London Eye River Cruise

Whether you’re planning to visit the London Eye or you just want a tour around the Thames which focuses on the giant Ferris wheel, this river cruise is a great alternative to other services.

Although the London Eye River Cruise is not as long as other boat tours in the area, it can be a lot more affordable.

This circular loop will take you past locations such as Big Ben, St. Paul’s Cathedral, The Tower of London, and the Houses of Parliament.

You can also purchase this as a bundle with your London Eye Tickets which is great for visitors wanting to take a journey on the ferris wheel.

I've done this in the past and booked online which saved me over £11.00!

TIP: This cruise is also part of the London Explorer Pass , which could save you between 20-50% off of the retail price.

Find out more or purchase tickets here.

Ticket Prices :

  • £19.50 for Adults
  • £16.50 for Children
  • Children under 2 ride for free
  • Cruise and London Eye Adult Price £60.00 for Adults and £54.00 for Children

Before purchasing tickets, note that this cruise is included in the  London Explorer Pass , which could save you between 20-50% off of the retail price.

When I went, I timed my visit to coincide with the tour departure times.

A single rotation on the London Eye takes around 30 minutes, and I went off peak so didn't have to wait in a queue.

It is possible to get the timings right if you do a bit of planning!

  • Daily Cruises from 10:45 to 19:45
  • Cruise departs *10.45, 11.45, 12.45, 13.45, 14.45, 15.45, 16.45, *17.45, *18.45, *19.45

Note: *Opening times may vary depending on seasonality. Be sure to check their schedule .

This river cruise company has earned a 4 ½ out of 5 stars rating on TripAdvisor.

Although there is a small contingent of passengers who had negative experiences, most reviews are very positive.

There aren’t enough complaints to suggest that these are common problems and I certainly didn't experience any.

Positive reviews for the service indicate that other guests found their tour guides to be quite helpful and informative.

The majority of people who take this cruise find it enjoyable - my family who I went with enjoyed it as they had limited time in the city so that made it a convenient choice for us.

It’s fair to assume that the few complaints may just be random outliers.

Sail on a 1920s Barge

Hop aboard a historic wooden Thames Sailing Barge, and enjoy a voyage through history along the Thames.

Lady Daphne was the last wooden sailing barge still working on the Thames - and has recently be replaced by the Sailing Barge "Will."

take a trip along the thames

There are regularly run tours and the ship is also available for private hire.

A fellow tour guide, Jess, and I were lucky enough to take a journey on the Lady Daphne and hope to repeat it with Will in the future!

On our journey, we boarded at Tower Millennium Pier and rode all the way to Greenwich (where we got an awesome view of the Thames Barrier) and back.

But the best part was that we also got to sail under Tower Bridge - and they raised the Bridge just for our boat! We felt like real VIPs.

Check their website for prices and more information.

SPEEDBOAT RIDES

Speedboat rides on the Thames are not a budget option, but they are thrilling - and I find them to be very popular with families who take my walking tour.

Throughout the experience, passengers will alternate between enjoying a leisurely ride along the Thames for sightseeing and a fast-paced thrill ride.

Guests are well protected with waterproof jackets, a life jacket, and goggle-style visors to withstand the thrilling wind speeds they will experience.

Thames RIB Experience

This RIB (Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat) is one of the fastest boats on the Thames, jetting visitors along the river at approximately 30 knots.

Each boat (which only holds up to 12 people) is manned by a guide who provides commentary throughout the journey.

In addition to their longer tour of the Thames, this company also manages three shorter tours of Canary Wharf, and the Tower Millennium Pier.

Ticket prices typically depend upon the length of the boat ride.

Find more information or purchase tickets here .

Ticket Prices:

Thames Barrier Experience (75 minutes)

  • £69.00 for Guests 14+
  • £59.00 for 14 and Under

Canary Wharf Experience (50 minutes)

  • £54 for Guests 14+
  • £49 for Children 2 - 13 years

Tower RIB Blast (20 minutes) - This is the one I hear the most about on my tours!

  • £35.50 for Guests 14+
  • £31.50 for Children 2 - 13 years

The Thames RIB Experience has earned a full 5-star rating on TripAdvisor – and that includes over 2,500 positive reviews.

Many comments report that this is an excellent trip for families on holiday.

Other positive comments mention that you will probably get wet while on this excursion, so it’s best experienced during hot days (I know that sounds like a joke but we DO get hot weather - I promise!).

This is intended as more of an entertaining thrill ride. If you’re looking for excitement on the river, consider the Thames RIB Experience.

Thames Jet by City Cruises

This speedboat service is managed by City Cruises and offers a similar excursion to the RIB Experience I listed above.

They don’t offer as many tours as their competitors, but the Thames Jet is an excellent alternative.

take a trip along the thames

Their Thames Rush speedboat tour is over 50 minutes.

Ticket prices are comparable to similar services, but they also offer family tickets at a concession.

  • £49 for Adults
  • £39 for Children (15 and under)

Tour Hours:

  • 9 tours between 11 am and 7 pm (there may be fewer tours in the winter months)

TripAdvisor has given the Thames Jet service 4 ½ out of 5 stars . Most of the reviews are very positive, but there are a few negative comments.

Luckily, the few negative reviews don't appear to be the norm.

Most people enjoy this speedboat tour, with a majority of reviews stating that the tour guides are very entertaining and informative.

CANAL BOAT RIDES

Operating entirely along the canals that flow through the north of London, a canal ride is a charming way to see parts of London that most tourists miss.

As I live in north London, a canal ride is a yearly tradition of mine!

take a trip along the thames

For a true experience off the beaten path, these relaxing and beautiful rides are a definite must.

Jason's Original Canal Boat Trip

From March to November, you can take a canal boat ride with Jason's Original with live commentary from trained guides.

  • One Way: Adult - £18 / Concession £14
  • Return: Adult - £23 / Concession £19

Jason’s London Canal Boat Trip is offered as part of the London Pass , which means more savings for you!

London Waterbus Company

This is the company I usually book with as the price is great, the boats are comfortable, and the staff are fantastic.

The last time I went was a beautiful summer day and I boarded in Little Venice and travelled to Camden Lock (where Camden Market is).

On the ride, we passed through Regent's Park and the grounds of London Zoo for some charming views!

It took us just 45 minutes for the one way journey, and I enjoyed live commentary the entire way.

  • Adult (17-59 years) £16.00
  • Child (5-16 years) £12
  • Student 17+ with photo student ID £12
  • Senior 60+ years £12
  • Toddler (under 3 years) Free

Check their  website  for more details and to purchase tickets.

LUNCH AND DINNER CRUISES

Sightseeing cruises are nice, but they might not be the best option for business events or dating.

If you’re looking for a more sociable trip along the Thames, consider one of the following Dining Cruises.

In addition to the typical dinner cruise, many companies offer a variety of dining and party cruises, such as tea and showboat cruises, that allow you to enjoy more than just the sights and sounds of London.

To browse a full list of lunch and dinner cruise options by type rather than by company, click here .

Whether you want to go on a cruise with wonderful music and fabulous food, or you just want to have your afternoon tea out on the Thames, City Cruises offers a wide variety of options.

The Jazz Cruise is my favourite! I did this one just a few weeks ago, in fact. I arrived with a friend about 15 minutes before departure.

When I boarded I was given a glass of sparkling wine to kick things off! I was shown to our pre-allocated table and then we were free to wander the boat and enjoy the live music.

After being on the water for a bit, we returned to our table for a fantastic 3-course dinner, followed by dancing as the band continued to play.

The whole experience lasted about 3 hours and was worth every penny!

If you order online during the summer, you can save 20% on each dining cruise offered through this company.

Tickets are already quite affordable, so this is an excellent opportunity to save money while having fun out on the water.

More information or to purchase .

I am lucky because I live in London which means I can take advantage of these tours all year long.

The reason I'm saying this is because their prices fluctuate throughout the year and on different days of the week.

So it's worth taking a look at their fare calendars to see which is cheapest when you are in town.

Lunch Cruise on The Thames

  • £51 for Adults
  • £41 for Children (ages 3-12)

London Dinner Cruise on The Thames

When it comes to its dining cruises, this company has received fairly high ratings on TripAdvisor.

Although this isn’t their primary service, City Cruises regularly receives positive remarks for their dining boat trips.

Most reviewers have given them a 5-star rating, reporting that the food is quite excellent and the cruise itself is very relaxing.

Some have said that their Sundowner cruise is a great way to unwind after a long day, while others have reported that the Afternoon Tea cruise is a good value for the money.

And, as I stated above, the Jazz Cruise gets 5 stars from me, too.

BUS & BOAT COMBOS

There are a lot of boat tours and cruises offered on the Thames, but none of them can show you EVERYTHING worth seeing in London.

To experience more than just the river that runs through this beautiful city, you’ll want to consider combining a cruise with either walking tours or bus tours.

Thankfully, there are a lot of companies in the area that provide combo packages that include many different types of excursions.

These combination packages can be a great way to save money on all kinds of activities!

Big Bus Tours

Big Bus is one of the most popular tour companies in the world.

They offer services internationally and are well known for providing quality service.

take a trip along the thames

Their combo package for London includes a cruise with City Cruises, their hop-on, hop-off bus tour, a selection of guided walking tours, and a promo codes booklet.

Tickets for this combo package can be purchased either for 24 or 48 hours, allowing you to take as much time as you wish to enjoy everything included.

If you’re looking for a combination package that will allow you to discover as much of the city as possible without paying a lot of money, this is a great choice.

  • Tickets can be used on any date within 6 months of purchase.
  • Enjoy each tour or cruise at your own leisure.
  • Follow the tour hours of City Cruises to schedule your boat trip.

Big Bus Tours of London has a 4-star rating on TripAdvisor. Most reviews are very positive, and comments about this specific combo package tend to be favorable.

Even customers who did not enjoy their experience reported that the cruise was excellent. Many passengers have said that this is a great value for the money.

Others report that the buses run frequently, allowing you to get off and experience various sites such as the Tower of London.

Tootbus Tour

This tour service is almost the same as Big Bus Tours.

Much like their competitor, they also offer a Thames River cruise pass through City Cruises.

In recent times, I have found that the Tootbus has become more popular with my visitors than Big Bus Tours and they seem to be getting ever more popular.

You’ll also have access to 80+ stops at attractions all over London on their hop-on, hop-off bus tour.

Ticket prices are very similar, so this might be a great alternative if other combo packages are all sold out.

  • Follow the tour hours of City Cruises to schedule your boat trip

Tootbus, once known as the Original London Sightseeing Tour, has received a 4-star rating on TripAdvisor.

A majority of the reviews are positive, but experiences with this tour company are a bit more mixed than other services in the same range.

Most of the complaints focus on a lack of buses, but, in my opinion, this has changed as the brand has become more popular.

Most customers have not reported a problem with their offerings, and there are thousands of reviews suggesting that this company provides excellent service.

Many passengers noted that their tour guides are very good (and I know a couple of them personally so I van vouch for that, too!), so this should be a great choice if you want to learn a lot about the London area.

Things to Know When Going on a River Thames Cruise

Do you need to book Thames River Cruises in advance?

You don't necessarily need to, but if you do not book your tickets in advance, then you can get ticket from ticket counters on piers.

Due to limited availability, you may not always get tickets for a particular date or time slot. As such, it is always advisable to book your cruise tickets in advance.

Note that it depends which boat journey you are going to take as to whether this is needed or not.

I found it worth it to book in advance for the London Eye and Boat bundle as that saved a bunch of money but for my trips on the Uber Boat, I wouldn't - and don't need to.

take a trip along the thames

Where can I catch a Thames River Cruise?

Piers of some popular cruises are listed below:

  • City Cruises - Westminster Pier, London Eye Pier, Tower Pier, and Greenwich Pier
  • Uber Boat by Thames Clippers - Embankment Pier, Westminster Pier, Tower Millennium Pier, London Bridge City Pier, Canary Wharf, Greenwich Pier, North Greenwich Pier
  • Thames River Service - Westminster Pier
  • Tate to Tate by Thames Clippers - Bankside Pier, Millbank Pier
  • Thames River Services' Circular Cruise - Westminster Pier
  • London Eye River Cruise - The London Eye pier
  • Lady Daphne - Tower Millennium Pier
  • Thames RIB Experience - Embankment Pier
  • Thames Jet by City Cruises - Westminster Pier

Our Westminster Walking Tour ends within walking distance of the Westminster Pier and our City of London and All in One Tours finish right next to Tower Millennium Pier!

How far do cruise boats go up the Thames?

It all depends upon which river cruise you are taking.

Most of the cruises start from Westminster Pier and goes up to Tower Millennium Pier.

Some long run cruises also start from Millbank Pier and reach Greenwich Pier.

To see it all, I would strongly recommend riding from Battersea to Greenwich, where possible!

There are also some special river cruises during the warmer months which run from Westminster to Hampton Court Palace .

Are River Cruises safe?

The cruise river boats are inspected by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and they carry modern safety equipment onboard.

Also, trained skippers and crews run the safety briefing as they leave their respective boarding points.

In other words, there is no reason to worry about safety while enjoying a cruise ride.

Tips From Locals and Travelers

Assuming you've read all or even just some of this post, you've had the chance to see my personal recommendations when it comes to Thames River cruises.

However, it's important to get a variety of opinions when it comes to these types of services.

Thankfully, many members of our London Travel Tips group on Facebook will offer their own thoughts on these cruise companies, and I've included some of their most helpful suggestions here.

take a trip along the thames

It can get pretty cold in London during the winter, so travelers might be surprised to learn that they actually do keep most of the Thames River cruises open all year.

While it can get cold, pretty much every company uses boats with an indoor area where you can stay warm as you enjoy the ride.

take a trip along the thames

Even so, it is recommended to bundle up during the winter anyways, so you shouldn't be too cold on a river cruise boat as long as you wear warm clothing.

take a trip along the thames

A lot of locals recommend using the Uber Boat, because it's a very easy and consistent service and it offers stops all along the Thames, even in Greenwich. As you already know, this is my favourite!

take a trip along the thames

The reason this river cruise boat is so popular is because it's often used as transportation by people who live in London, and in fact they rely upon these boats to get to and from work.

take a trip along the thames

Locals also note that you can pay for the Uber Boat by using an Oyster Card, and they offer price cuts for card holders.

Even better, once you get past the Tower Bridge, the boat will speed up and allow you to get around the city much quicker!

take a trip along the thames

If you're wondering whether to take a hop-on hop-off tour on the river or a dinner cruise, it's worth noting that the dinner cruise does not include any commentary.

Travelers who want to learn more about the city while cruising down the Thames might not enjoy the dinner cruise as much, but it's still a great service for anyone who wants to enjoy the view of London as the sun is setting!

take a trip along the thames

Other travelers suggest skipping the dinner cruise and hopping on the speed boat. As Trish notes, these boats will wait until they are in clear waters and take off at thrilling speeds!

For even more helpful advice, you can always visit our London Travel Tips group on Facebook and ask whatever questions you might have.

25 Terrific Things To Do Along The Thames

From go karting to grabbing cocktails at rooftop bars, here's our rundown of 25 things to do along the Thames.

Samuel Hopkins

The Thames Path is a 180 mile stretch from Gloucestershire to East London but, since we’re all about London, we’ve cut the trek down to a *relatively* short journey from Richmond to Greenwich , crossing various bridges and stopping at some great spots along the way — including art galleries, touristy hangouts, bars, pubs, and garden oases. We are by no means suggesting that you tackle this all in one day… you couldn’t possibly squeeze it all in. But chop it up into parts, and you’ll have some jolly good days up your sleeve. So without further ado, here’s a roundup of the best things to do along the Thames:

1. Kew Gardens

The beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, which are showing one of the best photography exhibitions in London for 2022

These world-renowned botanical gardens are made up of over 50,000 living plants which can be discovered in a variety of environments from the famous Arboretum to the Alpine rock garden. It’s a lovely spot which borders the Thames and was recently voted the UK’s favourite garden to visit.

2. Dine at Banyan on the Thames

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Banyan On The Thames (@banyanonthames)

Banyan on the Thames is a wonderful riverside restaurant with a fantastic choice of food in Wandsworth. They do a mean plate of seafood here, so if that’s your kind of thing then you’re in luck!

3. Battersea Park and the Peace Pagoda

The pagoda and pathway of Battersea Park in the shining sunshine

A 200-acre slice of tranquility, Battersea Park is one of Londoner’s favourite parks and there’s everything here from tree-lined boulevards to its own bloomin’ zoo! Make sure you pay a visit to the Peace Pagoda, which was built as part of Buddhist monk Nichidatsu Fujii’s (1885–1985) advocacy for world peace and non-violence.

4. Putt in the Park

6. Visit the Tate Britain

10. somerset house.

18. Explore the stunning St. Dunstan’s in the East

The bombed out ruins of this church was named for St. Dunstan, a tenth century monk with a colourful past. He survived brushes with black magic, leprosy, and the Devil himself to become Archbishop of Canterbury – good on him we say! It’s a serene spot which has now been transformed into a beautiful garden. It’s a fantastic spot if you’re wanting to take some time out to relax.

19. Walk along the river to the Tower of London…

One of the city’s oldest and most recognisable tourist attractions, the imposing Tower of London has stood since William the Conqueror decided the capital needed a fortress to remind Londoners of his conquest.Nearly 1000 years later, it’s still standing, famously housing the Crown Jewels and a flock of ravens, who are billed as the ‘Guardians of the Tower’. It’s right by the Thames and it’s a fantastic view – great for a selfie or two!

10 top places to visit along the Thames

By Phoebe Frangoul

10 top places to visit along the River Thames

Take us to the river

While Londoners often take the River Thames for granted, many visitors only see it from the Southbank, a boat tour and then from the plane window on their way out of the city again. And yet the mighty waterway is 346km, and today boasts hundreds of attractions on its banks, from the antique to the all-new, from east London to west. So, to help celebrate the longest river in England, here are our top 10 spots to visit alongside and over it.

BEST FOR: Adrenaline junkies

If you have a good head for heights, pull on some climbing boots, a helmet and a harness and climb the O2, otherwise known as the Dome. London's former white elephant has been reborn as a world-class music venue, which has seen the likes of Prince and Beyoncé play to sell-out crowds, and is also now home to London's branch of hipster New York cocktail bar, Brooklyn Bowl (we recommend the Wythe Avenue: bourbon with raspberry liqueur, fresh raspberries and cranberry juice). However, it's the tours of the bouncy white roof that are truly ingenious - and unmissable. Climb by daylight to take in the full beauty of the London skyline and make out landmarks up to 15 miles away, or opt for a sunset or twilight ascent for breathtaking views of the city lights. £26, Peninsula Square, London SE10 (+4420 8463 2000; www.theo2.co.uk )

BEST FOR: History buffs

The Cutty Sark recently underwent an astonishing refurbishment after a devastating fire. Now the fastest and last remaining tea clipper of its kind sits like a glowing, golden bird on land, illuminated from beneath by glass walkways. Children will adore the experience of walking underneath the 963-ton vessel, as well as climbing aboard to find out what life was like on a 19th-century sailing ship. The events programme features live music and educational activities, making this an excellent all-weather family day out. Tip: the ship's location, on a deep curve of the Thames, is particularly thrilling to approach by boat. Adults £13.50, children aged 5-15 £7, King William Walk, Greenwich, London SE10 (+4420 8858 4422; www.rmg.co.uk/cuttysark )

BEST FOR: Thirsty bookworms

The Thames is dotted with many venerable drinking establishments, but one of the most legendary is The Grapes at Limehouse, which just so happens to have Gandalf as its landlord. Well, not exactly, but Sir Ian McKellan is the proprietor of this East End boozer, that proudly traces its lineage back to 1583. Enjoy a pie and a pint in the snug bar where Charles Dickens used to drink (he namechecked The Grapes in Our Mutual Friend ) or opt for the full white-linen-and-crystal experience in the elegant dining room upstairs, while watching the lights of Canary Wharf glitter on the water outside. 76 Narrow Street, Limehouse, London, E14 (+4420 7987 4396; www.thegrapes.co.uk )

BEST FOR: Fans of style and substance

Downriver from London Bridge, past the Mayor's Building and under Tower Bridge, you'll find yourself on a comparatively quiet stretch of water overlooked by a cool, modernist building (a banana warehouse in a previous life): this is home to the Design Museum. The temple to innovation has a permanent collection devoted to all aspects of design, from fashion to furniture, plus a programme of temporary exhibitions. The Blueprint restaurant on the first floor, the ground-floor café and the Riverside Garden all provide excellent views of the water, and there's a fantastic shop that stocks everything from Anglepoise lamps to Miffy books. Entry adults £8.80, students £6.60, children under 16 £4.40, those under 6 go free, 28 Shad Thames, London SE1 (+4420 7403 6933; www.designmuseum.org )

BEST FOR: Curious explorers

Tower Bridge has made cameo appearances in countless films and television shows. However, to really understand this prime example of Victorian engineering, join a tour up the vertiginous walkways that reach 42m above the Thames. You'll learn about the history of the bridge and its ingenious bascule design, a layout that allows tall ships to pass beneath. Visit the interactive displays in the Victorian Engine Rooms to bring the story of this iconic structure to life. And yes, a red double-decker bus has made the terrifying leap from one side of the open bridge to the other. Adults £9.00, concessions £6.30, children £3.90, Tower Bridge Rd, London SE1 2UP (+4420 7403 3761; www.towerbridge.org.uk )

BEST FOR: Food with a view

The sixth-floor restaurant at Tate Modern has one of the most spectacular views of any dining room in London, if not the world, with the dome of St Paul's peering grandly through the wall of glass that spans one side of the airy space. Furthermore, the place is unpretentious and buzzy: babies are as welcome as business folk. If you really want to impress a date, take them to the bar for a glass of wine before dinner and watch the river churn below, while the sun sets behind that iconic skyline. Bankside, London SE1 (+4420 7887 8888; www.tate.org.uk )

BEST FOR: Aspiring Don Drapers

Londoners are spoiled when it comes to cocktail bars, but one of the very best is the Royal Festival Hall's Skylon. This Modernist masterpiece has double-height windows that command spectacular views of the river, soaring concrete columns and mid-century furniture that befits its 1951 'Festival of Britain' origins. Watch the mixologists at work from a seat at the bar or enjoy the view of the Southbank crowds from the riverside lounge. There's an extensive wine list but the cocktails are the real draw: the menu covers the classics as well as seasonal specialities. Royal Festival Hall, Belvedere Rd, London SE1 (+4420 7654 7800; www.skylon-restaurant.co.uk )

BEST FOR: Floating above the city

Yes, many cities across the globe have their own souped-up ferris wheels but none come close to the London Eye (literally, at 135m it's the tallest in the world). Both an architectural masterpiece and an innovative feat of engineering, it's fast become a well-loved part of the landscape since its completion in 2000, thanks to its elegant design. With its unbeatable location on a curve of the river that takes in everything from Westminster to Windsor Castle, the Eye feels like a fast-track to the heart of the capital and the surrounding countryside. Adults and children over 4 £29.50, Riverside Building, County Hall, Westminster Bridge Road, London SE1 (+44 871 781 3000; www.londoneye.com )

BEST FOR: Green-fingered folk

The Garden Museum is one of those treasures that feels like a delightful surprise to even the most jaded Londoner. Sat quietly off the bustling Lambeth Palace Road, the museum's collection of ancient implements, paintings and exhibitions on gardeners past and present is housed in the deconsecrated parish church of St-Mary-at-Lambeth. Outside, a 17th-century-style knot garden pays tribute to John Tradescants the Elder and Younger - great plant hunters whose tombs inspired the museum's creation and whose discoveries fill its flowerbeds. The garden café serves lunch and cakes made with ingredients grown within this secret urban oasis. £7.50 adults, 5 Lambeth Palace Rd, London SE1 (+4420 7401 8865; www.gardenmuseum.org.uk )

BEST FOR: River walkers

Upriver, at Richmond, life on the Thames has a distinctly tranquil, laid-back flavour, as evidenced by the White Cross pub. At high tide the drinking spot is marooned on its own island, so you can bob up in your boat, pull on the wellies that have been thoughtfully provided and enter from the water. There's been a watering hole (sorry) on this spot ever since 1748, and everything from the roaring fire to the dog-friendly philosophy renders this one of those pubs where you feel like a local, even if you've come from further than around the bend in the river. Thames Boat Trips: More Than a River Experience

take a trip along the thames

Here at The Thames Rib Experience, we know a lot about the River Thames and our boat trips are lauded as the best way to experience this fascinating river of ours.

You can read about our Thames experience here.

We’ve been working on the Thames since 2008, and in that we’ve learnt a lot about this famous river. So to give you some pointers, this article is dedicated to the history of the Thames, so that the next time you’re on one of our boat trips you can take in some of the sights armed with some useful and interesting information.

A Bit About The Thames

The roman influence on the thames.

The Romans had a profound influence on the Thames and its development. In AD 43, the Romans famously invaded Britain, landing in Kent. Pursuing the ancient Britons along the banks of the Thames, they came to the first fordable point of the river. Under the rule of the Emperor Claudius, the Romans occupied England and recognised the economic importance and value of the River Thames. As a result, it became a major trading port, allowing Roman vessels to trade products such as grain and wine with other countries, as well as offering routes via roads to the rest of Britain. It was the Romans who erected the first bridge over the Thames. The bridge was built entirely of wood and stood a little down-stream from the present London Bridge.

Middle Ages on the Thames

During the Middle Ages, economic prosperity and the foundation of monasteries by the Anglo-Saxons attracted unwelcome visitors and by around AD 870, the Vikings were sweeping up the Thames on the tide and creating havoc and destruction.

Once King William had won total control of the strategically important Thames Valley, he went on to invade the rest of England. He had several castles built, including those at Wallingford, Rochester, Windsor and, most importantly, the Tower of London. A consequence of his reign was the completion of the London Bridge, which acted as a barricade and barrage on the river, affecting the tidal flow upstream and increasing the likelihood of the river freezing over.

Early Modern Period of the Thames

During a series of cold winters, the Thames froze completely. When the ice was thick enough and lasted long enough, Londoners would take to the river and celebrate the Frost Fair, a tent city that was set up on the Thames offering several amusements, including ice bowling. They even led an elephant across the river below Blackfriars Bridge.

After the temperature began to rise again, starting in 1814, the river stopped freezing over. The building of a new London Bridge in 1825, allowed the river to flow more freely and prevented it from freezing over in cold winters.

The Great Fire of London

The City of London was virtually destroyed in 1666 when a fire, which started in the king’s baker shop, spread through the timber buildings of the Old City. The fire was the second disaster to strike the capital in the space of just 12 months, following the Great Plague. The fear at the time was that the fire would pass across the River Thames and begin to set fire to the south of the city, though fortunately, that never happened. The catalogue of destruction was appalling: in just four days 13,200 houses were destroyed and over 100,000 people made homeless. And all because a maid had failed to put out the ovens at the end of the night in the King’s baker shop.

The Importance of the Thames for Trading

In good conditions, barges travelled from Oxford to London carrying wool, timber, foodstuffs and livestock. The Thames provided the major route between the City of London and Westminster in the 16th and 17th centuries. To help reduce the shipping queues, the first dock was constructed below Tower Bridge in 1661. Over the next 200 years, to meet the every-expanding merchant fleet, the number of docks grew greatly in number and size, culminating with the Albert Dock in 1880.

By the 18th century, the Thames was one of the world’s busiest waterways. Efforts were made to resolve the navigation conflicts upstream by building locks along the stream.

Victorian Era on the Thames

The quality of the water in the Thames had been deteriorating for decades but it wasn’t until the 19th century that the problem became extremely pronounced. Due to the ride in population and dumping of raw sewage into the Thames, the river was filling up with harmful bacteria. As a result, four serious cholera outbreaks killed tens of thousands of people between the years of 1832 and 1865.

During ‘The Great Stink’ in 1858, the pollution of the River Thames had reached such an extreme that chlorine-soaked drapes were hung in the windows of Parliament to stave off the smell of the river, but to no avail. To fix the problem, a concerted effort was made to construct massive sewer systems on the north and south river embankments, under the supervision of engineer Joseph Bazalgette. Similar undertakings also took place to improve the quality of the water by building reservoirs and pumping stations on the river.

20th Century Thames

The growth of road transport, and the decline of the Empire in the years following 1914, reduced the economic prominence of the river. During the Second World War, the protection of certain Thames-side facilities, particularly docks and water treatment plants, was crucial to the munitions and water supply of the country.

In the post-war era, most trade was moved downstream from central London. The decline of heavy industries on the Thames improved the water quality greatly in comparison to the late 19th and early-to-mid 20th centuries.

The Thames Today

The Thames has been host to two Summer Olympic Games: 1908 rowing and 1948 rowing and canoeing. Rowing and sailing clubs are common along the Thames and a path runs alongside the river, offering a National Route for walkers and cyclists. The River Thames has also been the setting for many Hollywood films, a gateway to important artistic and cultural centres, many of which you will see on The Thames Rib Experience. The dress code on most Thames River Cruises is smart casual attire. However, feel free to dress more formally for any special occasion. Opt for comfortable attire that allows freedom of movement. It's also advisable to dress in layers as London's weather can be quite unpredictable. This way you can add on more layers if the weather gets chilly. Don't forget hats and sunscreen if you are opting for a cruise during the day, especially in the summer.

No Smoking sign

  • Safety first:  Life jackets are provided and must be worn if instructed. Crew members will brief you on safety procedures before departure.
  • Smoking restrictions:  Most cruises have a no-smoking policy indoors, including cabins and enclosed areas. Smoking might be allowed on designated outdoor decks, so check signage.
  • Mind the gap:  Be cautious when moving around the boat, especially between decks or when disembarking. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip.
  • Keep it clean:  Bins are provided for waste disposal. Help maintain the cleanliness of the boat by disposing of rubbish responsibly.
  • Evening Cruise on River Thames: Children aged 13 and under are not allowed on the cruise. Outside food and drinks are not allowed and it is not wheelchair accessible.

Aerial view of the Thames

  • Dress for the weather:  Pack layers! London's weather is notoriously fickle. A light rain jacket, a scarf, and sunglasses (even in cloudy skies) are your allies. If it's a scorcher, a hat and sunscreen are essential. Opt for comfy shoes – you might be tempted to explore once you disembark.
  • Pick your pier on HOHO:  Consider your cruise's direction. Greenwich Pier offers a glimpse into maritime history, while Westminster Pier puts you near Big Ben. Research your starting point for nearby restaurants or pubs for a pre-cruise bite.
  • Pack like a seasoned traveller:  Bring a reusable water bottle and a tote bag. Plastic is a foe on the Thames! Pack snacks if you're on a longer cruise, but don't forget – most cruises offer food and drinks for purchase. Cameras are a must, and binoculars add an extra layer of swashbuckling fun!
  • Capture the golden hour: For stunning worthy for the ‘gram photos, go for sunset cruises, when the sky explodes with vibrant colors.

11 Must-See London Landmarks Along The River Thames

take a trip along the thames

Pawel Kowalczyk / Shutterstock

  • Destinations
  • United Kingdom

The River Thames runs through the heart of London, England. Famous landmarks on both sides of the river can be viewed via sightseeing bus or on foot, but seeing them from the river itself provides a unique perspective. As England’s longest river and an important trade route, the River Thames has shaped the city’s history. Viewing London from the Thames gives you a deeper appreciation of the river’s importance to this great city.

Several tour companies offer River Thames sightseeing cruises with commentary, often with refreshment services on board. Thames River Sightseeing offers two different cruise tours. One route runs from Westminster to Greenwich. A shorter hop-on, hop-off route covers five piers from Westminster to Saint Katharine’s Pier. Viscount Cruises offers daytime sightseeing cruises and a Sunday evening cruise. One of the ticket options on City Cruises is a 24-hour pass that allows you to get on and off at any of four piers. The more adventurous may be interested in a speedboat tour. Both Thamesjet and Thames RIB Experience offer tours on rigid inflatable boats (RIB).

Thames Clippers is a water bus service with 23 pier stops on its routes and departures every 20 minutes. They offer a River Roamer fare that allows you to hop on and off boats on any of the piers all day long. You won’t get the commentary offered on the other cruise tours, but you will have a great deal more flexibility. This was the way I saw London from the Thames.

As you sail down the river, watch for some of these London landmarks.

1. London Eye

The London Eye is the world’s largest cantilevered observation wheel. Launched in 2000, this giant Ferris wheel offers 360-degree views of the city. It has changed the London skyline and is now an icon of the city. As you travel through London, you’ll notice that the top of the wheel is often visible behind other buildings. Sometimes you’ll catch glimpses of larger portions of the wheel. The wheel is situated along the South Bank of the Thames across from the Houses of Parliament, and you’ll get an unobstructed view of the entire wheel from the river.

2. London Skyline

The river also offers an unique view of the London skyline. The London Eye is not the only structure that has changed the London landscape over the past 20 years. Today, modern skyscrapers stand among centuries-old buildings. The Shard , a 95-story building that looks like a glass pyramid, sits at the edge of the South Bank. You’ll see new structures — like the Gherkin , and the commercial skyscraper at 20 Fenchurch Street that has become known as the Walkie Talkie because of its shape — towering behind old buildings. You’ll see the dome of Saint Paul’s Cathedral , the Houses of Parliament , and Big Ben . From the river, the city is spread out before you on both sides.

3. London’s Bridges

A number of bridges, many of which are themselves London landmarks, cross the River Thames, linking the South and North Banks. You’ll likely travel over the bridges several times as you explore London. During a river trip, you’ll sail under the arches of Westminster Bridge and Southwark Bridge, the beams of the modern London Bridge, and the dampers of the pedestrian Millennium Bridge. As you approach the majestic Tower Bridge , you’ll spot people on the glass-floored high-level walkways running between the two towers.

4. Houses Of Parliament

The sand-colored limestone Palace of Westminster , built between 1840 and 1870 on the North Bank of the River Thames, is the home of the United Kingdom’s Houses of Parliament. The image of this iconic symbol of Great Britain is found on many souvenirs. The Elizabeth Tower , the clock tower housing the famous Big Ben clock, stands at the north end of the Houses of Parliament.

5. Cleopatra’s Needle

An original Egyptian obelisk sits on the Thames Embankment; it commemorates the British victory over Napoleon. It was made in 1460 B.C. for the Pharaoh Thutmose III. It became known as Cleopatra’s Needle when it came to London via the city of Cleopatra in 1878. Two large bronze Sphinxes lie on either side of the obelisk.

6. Globe Theatre

The Globe Theatre is a reconstruction of the original open-air playhouse where Shakespeare worked and where many of his plays were staged. The circular white-and-black timber-frame building with its thatched roof, located on the South Bank in London’s Bankside district, is easily visible from the river.

Pro Tip: If you wish to explore more of Bankside on a self-guided walking tour , get off at London Bridge or Bankside Pier.

7. HMS Belfast

The HMS Belfast is a Royal Navy warship that fired some of the first shots of World War II’s D-Day landings. It served in the Arctic convoys and in the Korean War and is now permanently moored as a museum ship in the River Thames.

8. Tower Of London

In the 1070s, William the Conqueror built a massive stone fortress with a stone tower at its center on the banks of the River Thames. The Tower of London remains an impressive landmark today. Between 1275 and 1279, King Edward I added a new water gate to provide access from the river. The Tower has served as a royal palace, a storehouse for weapons, and a home for the Royal Mint. It was also used as a prison for enemies of the state, although it was not specifically built for that purpose. The new water gate became known as Traitor’s Gate. As you glide past Traitor’s Gate, you can imagine what it might have felt like for prisoners to approach the fortress via boat.

9. Docklands And Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf is an urban hub of apartments, businesses, shops, and eateries. As you approach the modern skyscrapers, you’ll pass old buildings and former warehouses that speak to the area’s history as a busy shipping center. The West India Docks were built in the early 1800s, and other docks followed. For many years, the Docklands area was a major commerce center, full of ships coming and going. Over time, the ships became too big to travel up the Thames. The port industry began to decline in the 1960s, and all the docks were closed by 1980. Redevelopment began in the 1980s.

Pro Tip: If you venture off the boat in this area, two pubs are worth visiting. The Grapes is a 16th-century waterside pub on Narrow Street in Limehouse. It was once frequented by Charles Dickens. Actor Sir Ian McKellen is one of the current owners of the pub. The Prospect of Whitby is located on the banks of the Thames at Wapping between Canary Wharf and Saint Katharine’s Pier. It is one of London’s oldest pubs and is thought to be the oldest riverside pub on the Thames.

10. Historic Greenwich

The Old Royal Naval College in historic Greenwich.

Kiev.Victor / Shutterstock

Maritime Greenwich is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The impressive neoclassical Old Royal Naval College makes a striking impression as you approach the pier. It is easy to see why it has been used many times as a film location. Alongside the historical buildings, you’ll see more recently constructed landmarks such as The O2 arena with its massive dome and the Emirates Air Line cable car overhead.

Pro Tip: The highlights of Maritime Greenwich — the Old Royal Naval College , the Royal Observatory , the Queen’s House , the National Maritime Museum , and the Cutty Sark historic sailing ship — are within walking distance of the pier. If you wish to stop for refreshments, head to the Trafalgar Tavern , a Victorian riverside pub, or the Cutty Sark pub , a Georgian riverside pub with cozy decor and views of the river.

Explore hotels and Airbnbs near Historic Greenwich

11. Thames Barrier

The Thames Barrier is one of the largest movable flood barriers in the world. It has 10 steel gates that can be raised into position across the River Thames to protect central London from flooding caused by tidal surges. When raised, the main gates stand five stories tall. The Thames Barrier became operational in 1982 and has been closed 186 times between its opening and October of 2019.

Note that not all river tours go as far east as the Thames Barrier. For many, the easternmost point is Greenwich. Those tours that do include it may do so seasonally. If touring by river bus, you’ll need to pick a boat going to Woolwich in order to pass the barrier gates.

Take A Scenic Drive Along The East Coast On This Must-Do US Road Trip Route

O ne of the beautiful things about exploring the United States is that you can hop in a car and go wherever the wind takes you. A road trip is the perfect way to travel , and driving around the sprawling country has become one of the ultimate expressions of freedom and adventure. The Great American Road Trip has been immortalized time and time again by writers like Steinbeck and Kerouac.

If you've been dreaming about hopping behind the wheel and hitting the open highway, consider planning a trip along the United States East Coast from New York City to Key West, Florida. The scenic drive along the Eastern Seaboard will take you along scenic coastal roads bordering the Atlantic Ocean, with opportunities to stop in some of America's coolest cities and funky beach towns. You'll cover over 1,600 miles with a total driving time of around 33 hours, so it's best to budget a whole week or more for this trip and give yourself plenty of time to stop for sightseeing along the way.

Whether you're a first-time visitor to the United States or a veteran road tripper looking to experience a new region of the country, grab your road atlas, make an epic playlist, and get ready for the ultimate East Coast road trip.

New York City To Atlantic City (The Jersey Shore)

New York City is the perfect place to begin your road trip along the Atlantic Coast. Aside from being an iconic destination all on its own, it's greater metropolitan area has no fewer than three major international airports, so finding a flight from anywhere in the world should be no trouble. If you're renting a car, there are dozens of rental locations in the city.

Driving around New York City can be stressful — there's a lot of congestion on the roads, and parking can be costly. If you're renting a car for your road trip, it's best to wait until you're ready to leave the city. Until then, you can explore New York's unique neighborhoods, museums , nightlife, and food scenes by taking the city's excellent public transportation system. Budget at least a day or two in New York to see  iconic sites like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, and the Empire State Building. With more time, wander around neighborhoods like Soho, Greenwich Village, Manhattan, and Chelsea. Whatever you do, don't forget to try a slice of pizza before hitting the road.

The drive from New York to Atlantic City on the Jersey Shore takes just over two hours, so it's a nice way to start your road trip. Spend a night in Atlantic City exploring the famous boardwalk and trying your luck at some glittering casinos.

Ocracoke, North Carolina

After the hustle and bustle of New York and Atlantic City, you'll be ready for a change of scenery — and Ocracoke Island off the coast of North Carolina is the perfect off-the-beaten-path beach destination along the Atlantic Coast. The trip from Atlantic City to Ocracoke Island will take around 10 hours, including a one-hour ferry ride to the island. So, if you want to break it up, consider stopping halfway in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Somehow, Ocracoke Island remains one of the best kept secrets on the East Coast. The entire island is only 16 miles long and 3 miles wide and was once a favorite hideout of the notorious pirate Blackbeard and his men in the early 1700s. During your stay; you'll have the opportunity to take in historical landmarks and learn plenty of local legends associated with pirate life. Make sure to visit Springer's Point, which was once the location of unhinged pirate parties but now serves as a beautiful nature preserve.

Ocracoke Village is tiny and picturesque, with a variety of tasty restaurants serving freshly caught seafood and some cute shops with local artisan goods, and many of the local restaurants and bars have live music in the evenings. Locals and tourists alike enjoy spending the days sprawled out on the island's spacious white sand beaches, swimming in the Atlantic, riding bikes, and taking scenic boat rides around the island.

Charleston, South Carolina

After spending a few days enjoying the surf and sun on Ocracoke Island, hop back in the car and drive for about nine hours until you reach Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston is one of the most picturesque cities in the southeastern United States, and you should add it to your travel list immediately .

Charleston is known for its historic architecture, cobblestone streets, and laid-back Southern vibes. You can explore art museums and galleries here, catch a theatrical performance, and chow down on delicious Southern cuisine. For excellent shopping and people-watching, stroll down King Street or head to City Market to pick up some souvenirs from local artists and craftspeople. If you're looking for more beach time and less urban exploration, head to nearby Folly Beach, an adorable beach just over 20 minutes from downtown Charleston.

While Charleston is beautiful, it also has a complicated and disturbing history as a former hub of the North American slave trade. There is no denying that the city's wealth and prosperity were due to the exploitation of enslaved Africans and their descendants. While the horrors of that time can never be erased or forgotten, in recent years, the city of Charleston has attempted to preserve Black history with various tours, museum exhibits, and events where you can learn about the many ways African-American culture impacted the city and the American South as a whole.

Savannah, Georgia

After you've enjoyed the city of Charleston and its nearby beaches for a few days, hop back in the car for a short two-hour drive to Savannah, Georgia, which tourists often call  the most friendly destination in the U.S.   With streets draped in Spanish moss, beautiful architecture, and a thriving arts scene, Savannah makes an excellent stop along your East Coast road trip.

The city is home to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), one of the top-rated art schools in the United States, so it's no surprise that the city has developed a reputation for artistic expression and creativity. As you explore, you'll find plenty of art galleries, music venues, and theaters scattered among historic buildings and cobblestone streets.

With a day or two to spend in Savannah, you'll have time to experience the city's highlights. To cover the most ground, consider taking a hop-on, hop-off trolley tour, which will take you by all of the significant landmarks. For a spooky and unforgettable evening, book the Ghosts and Gravestones tour offered by Old Town Trolley Tours — Savannah is considered one of the most haunted cities in the United States.

Afterward, walk down its famous River Street, located along the waterfront, and admire the views before enjoying some mouthwatering seafood and a delicious cocktail at one of the many restaurants.

Key West, Florida

Key West, Florida, is the southernmost tip of the continental United States, and the drive from Savannah is about 10 hours. If you have time, break up the long stretch in the car with stops in either St. Augustine or West Palm Beach. Key West is one of the most enchanting beach communities in the United States, and there are many adventurous things to do during your visit. The tiny island is made of sand and coral and measures 4 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. To get there, you'll drive along the famous Overseas Highway, a 113-mile stretch with tons of bridges over the ocean and incredible views the entire way.

During your stay in Key West, leave plenty of time to kick back, relax on white sand beaches, and swim in shallow, turquoise waters. If you're an ocean lover, make sure you book one of the snorkeling excursions offered by various tour companies so that you can explore the only barrier reef in the United States. Back in town, you can enjoy excellent seafood restaurants, colorful architecture, and historic sites including the home where Ernest Hemingway lived and wrote many of his most iconic books throughout the 1930s.

If you rent a car for your road trip, you can choose to drop it off in Key West or head back to Miami, where you'll find a major international airport with plenty of options for flights home.
