  • Some of the most historic pubs in the city

History and pubs go hand in hand in London, and there’s no better way to learn about the past than with this walking tour of the most historic pubs present in the city.

On this tour, you’ll learn more about the important figures of London and where they spent all their free time.

For instance, you’ll see the last Victorian gin palace in the city and check out the pubs where Charles Dickens used to drink mead (a pub with a Victorian-style interior called the Lamb) and Queen Elizabeth I used to come to dance (Ye Olde Mitre, one of the most difficult pubs to find that also has no TV and where Samuel Jackson has also spent a good chunk of time).

The other three stops include the Crown Tavern which was frequented by Lenin before he went to Russia (it’s even rumored that he might have met Stalin here!), the Blackfriars Bridge which has an extravagant religious-themed interior, and the Seven Stars, one of the few places that survived the Great Fire of London.

At each stop, you can purchase drinks to taste their wares while they indulge you in a lively commentary.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

The 7 BEST Dublin Pub Crawl Tours + Information for Self-Guided Crawls

Affiliate Disclaimer

It is no secret that Dublin is a big drinking city and has fantastic nightlife; did you know that Dublin has over 700 pubs across the city? I remember thinking it was like Starbucks in America – one on every corner! And if you are looking to get the full Irish experience, you will likely want to do the best Dublin pub crawl tour (maybe even MULTIPLE Dublin Pub Crawls!) during your stay.

For those who are not much into drinking, I still recommend the experience of a Dublin pub crawl, just skip the booze! Pubs are a staple in Ireland and are really a part of the local Irish culture. Dublin pub crawl tours are a great way to explore the city, meet new people (hopefully hear some wild stories from the locals!), and most importantly to have fun while experiencing a unique Dublin activity.

🍻 JUMP STRAIGHT TO THE BEST DUBLIN PUB CRAWL TOURS 🍻

pin this guide!

What Is a Dublin Pub Crawl?

A Dublin pub crawl essentially entails visiting between 3-5 pubs (or more if you’re really ambitious and have the time!). Some Dublin pub crawl tours might have a theme to them, such as literary or music, and could include more information and/or theatrics. Otherwise, the most simple Dublin pub crawl would be to find a few pubs that interest you and map a route to hop between them.

What Is the Legal Drinking Age in Ireland?

The legal drinking age in Ireland is 18. Some places will check for an ID, but it is much more relaxed than some countries (such as America).

HOW to Do a Dublin Pub Crawl Tour and Where to Look For One

There are a few ways to do a pub crawl in Dublin. The first is to book a GUIDED pub crawl tour. If you are looking for someone to lead you between traditional Irish pubs and give you a bit more of the history or stories of each place, this will be the best option for you!

a pub full of people

Another option for Dublin pub crawls is to keep an eye on Facebook events or Meetup-type platforms. Often groups or local organizations will put together a more casual pub crawl. These are often larger groups that draw more locals looking to spend a night out meeting friends and moving from one place to another together. They are more common during holidays or special occasions such as Halloween or St. Patrick’s Day.

Last, you can always put together your own list of pubs in Dublin that interest you and have a go at creating your own DIY, self-guided Dublin pub crawl!

Below I will share my list of best paid, guided Dublin pub crawl tours, along with my favorite pubs and nightclubs that I enjoyed visiting while living in Dublin.

The Guinness Storehouse tour is a self-guided tour of Dublin’s most popular attraction. I must have gone on the tour 5 or more times during my few months of living in Dublin because I wanted to take every guest that visited me. I never got bored of going and learned something new each time!

The tour walks you through the brewing process and history of Guinness, which takes you through some important Irish history as well. The tour ends at the sky-high “Gravity Bar” where you can take in 360-degree views of Dublin. There’s really nothing else quite like this bar in the whole city! Plus, you get to enjoy a free pint of Guinness while you take in the incredible view.

Guinness Time at the Guinness Factory Tour

The Jameson Irish Whiskey Distillery Tour is also one of Dublin’s popular tours. It varies enough from the Guinness tour for both to be incredibly interesting and unique tours, even if you don’t like the taste of either beer or whiskey! The Jameson tour gives you a comparative whiskey tasting as well as a complimentary Jameson whiskey drink.

These are hands down my favorite tours/museums as an alternative to a Dublin pub crawl tour, and I highly recommend securing your tickets in advance so you don’t miss these popular attractions. The link below will give you admission to both tours PLUS timed skip-the-line passes – an incredible offer since the lines can last hours for those that wait!

Howth is an adorable town just outside of Dublin that will give you a small taste of the Irish countryside and the slower outer city lifestyle. This tour is best if you want to hear the history of Howth and be a part of a guided tour to make the most of your time, otherwise, it is easy enough to wander around the town and nature trails yourself.

Howth is easily accessible from Dublin by a short ride on the DART (about €6 each way and 25-30 minutes) from the Dublin Connolly station or on Dublin Bus 31 (about €5-6 round trip and 35 minutes).

Top 50 BEST Things to Do in Dublin at Night

Favorite Pubs for the Best Self-Guided Dublin Pub Crawl

I found so many pubs in Dublin (it’s truly a city of pubs) that I can hardly remember them or keep them straight! There is a pub that matches the need of just about every type of person, including casual and non-drinkers too. You will find pubs in Dublin that have traditional Irish music and dance, pubs where you can play board games, dance pubs, gay-friendly pubs, the list goes on and on!

What Is the Most Famous Pub in Dublin?

The Temple Bar is the most famous pub in Dublin. If you have ever seen an image of a Dublin pub, you likely saw a photo like the one below of the Temple Bar.

1. The Temple Bar (Pub and Area)

Temple Bar in Dublin, Ireland

This is arguably the most popular, and most touristy pub in Dublin. The Temple Bar is both a stand-alone pub, and the surrounding area located near the city center that has a high concentration of pubs, shops, and restaurants (which confused me for a while when I first moved to Dublin).

The Temple Bar is also popular because it offers Dublin’s largest collection of rare whiskeys– over 450 different varieties! Plus it’s always full of people having a good time on any day of the week.

I do think you still have to hit this tourist spot just to experience it, and you likely will find yourself in the area anyway while you’re exploring the city center.

A few of my other favorite Dublin pubs in the area that I recommend hopping to are Bad Bob’s and Fitzsimons .

A Few Other Popular Dublin Pubs to Crawl:

2. whelan’s pub.

This is a great dance pub with several stages throughout that play different music and often have dancing.

3. Doyle’s Pub

This pub is still in the city center but is lesser-known. It’s a nice place for food and a drink during the day and turns into more of a dance pub at night.

a pub with empty bar stools

4. The Camden Pub

A sports pub, it has large screens and is a lot of fun for Irish game days. It is located on Camden Street which is another area of Dublin with a good amount of fun, unique bars. If you are looking to hop between pubs just keep walking down Camden Street.

5. O’Reillys Pub

Known for their unique, “candlelit gothic bar” this Dublin pub is great for the character– and their cheap beers.

a gothic style pub

6. Sheehan’s Pub

Located on Grafton Street, it is surrounded by stores. Sheehan’s is perfect if you want to stop for a pint while getting some shopping done. It is also known for having great food.

7. Brazen Head

This is another touristy place because it is the oldest pub in Ireland. It has a very traditional Irish feel to it and is good for food and beer. It has a nice outdoor area so this is a good one to visit on a sunny day. Plus it’s fun to say you’ve been to the oldest pub in Ireland!

beers on tap, Guinness, etc.

8. Cassidy’s Pub

This pub has board games such as Jenga or Guess Who, to add an extra layer of entertainment for you and your friends beyond the pints!

Best Dublin Pub Crawl Routes

As far as choosing a Dublin pub crawl route goes, I recommend starting by picking a list of 3-5 pubs that are within a roughly 5-10 minute walk of each other. From there, you can map out where you want to start and end in relation to your accommodation or the next place you are trying to get to.

In most cases, I would say the best place to start is at the Temple Bar and work your way out of the city center from there. The easiest way is to walk along Camden Street, there are many great pubs along this route. Starting at the Temple Bar gives you a taste of the large and crowded touristy-type pubs, and then you can branch off into some of the smaller, more niche pubs.

Best Drinks to Try During Your Dublin Pub Crawl Tour

a pint of Guinness in Dublin, Ireland

1. Guinness

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Dublin pub crawl if you didn’t try a pint of Guinness! This delicious stout is a staple of Irish drinking culture, and for good reason. Every Dubliner and tourist alike can confirm that Guinness tastes its best in Dublin. There is a freshness and quality of pour that just can’t be beaten in other countries.

2. Smithwick’s Beer

If you prefer a slightly lighter beer, Smithwick’s is a popular Irish red ale.

3. Bailey’s

Another popular Irish drink, Bailey’s Irish cream is a sweet and creamy liqueur that is perfect as a dessert.

4. Baby Guinness Shot

No, it is not a small Guinness – it just happens to look like one. A baby Guinness is typically a shot of Irish cream, coffee liqueur, and black Sambuca (licorice taste). It is sweet and way too easy to drink!

a cup of Irish coffee

5. Irish Coffee

Coffee with whiskey in it, and maybe a dollop of whipped cream on top. You could also ask for it with some Bailey’s in it for a bit of extra creamy flavor! This is the perfect drink to warm you up on a rainy Irish afternoon.

6. Irish Whiskey

Another classic Irish drink to try during your Dublin pub crawl. Irish whiskeys worth trying include Jameson, Bushmills, Connemara, or Teelings.

7. Rock Shandy (Non-Alcoholic)

A refreshing Irish drink that is a mix of sparkling orange and lemon.

How Much is a Pint of Beer in Dublin, Ireland?

A pint of beer in Dublin averages about €5. In the more touristy areas (yes, like Temple Bar) a pint could even go up to €7 or €8 depending on what you order. Though typically a pint of Guinness hovers around €6 or below at most places you go across Ireland.

🍻 TIP: When you “cheers” in Ireland, you say “ sláinte “. Pronounced a bit like “slawn-cha” and means “health”.

Best Night/Dance Clubs in Dublin

Dublin has a good handful of nightclubs if you are looking to take your Dublin drinking experience to the next level and go beyond a typical Dublin pub crawl tour. Dublin’s dance clubs are always full of young Irish students and young adults looking to have a fun night!

Most of Dublin’s popular nightclubs are found on Harcourt Street. So when in doubt, just walk down Harcourt and look for the best line to hop into. Plus, try looking out for Dublin club deals online for reduced entry fees and to learn about what events might be happening while you are in town.

a blue lit night club

A note: I do actually highly recommend sticking to mostly trying out different Dublin pubs. Especially if you are short on time in Dublin and only have a few nights. Nightclubs will be nightclubs pretty much anywhere in the world. While they’re still very fun in Dublin, each pub has a bit of its own character and will give you a much more fulfilling Irish cultural experience!

1. Dicey’s Garden Club

This popular nightclub is always busy and draws a fun international crowd. The drinks are some of the cheapest in the city (€2 pints and wine some nights) and there’s a live DJ every night playing a mix of Latin and European hits. One of Dicey’s better-known features is the huge beer garden right outside of its 2 dance floors.

2. Copper Face Jacks (Coppers)

Coppers is another great, standard dance club to get a sense of Dublin’s nightlife. It has multiple dance floors, is open late, and draws young crowds. It is one of the most popular nightclubs in Dublin and always has some sort of deal or event happening.

The ONLY Checklist You NEED for a Trip Abroad

3. The George

This club will certainly not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it was one of my absolute favorites! It is an LGBTQ nightclub with fun, pop vibes and a friendly atmosphere. Beyond the great dancing that is always happening, The George will often have karaoke or drag nights that are hugely entertaining and draw some of Dublin’s most talented performers.

nightclub

4. The Grand Social

A unique circus-themed venue known for its friendly atmosphere and live music. It typically features more gigs and performers and is a bit smaller and more intimate of a crowd than some of the other Dublin nightclubs.

This is a unique venue with a little bit of something for everyone. You can hang out on the dance floor or outside under the heaters in the outdoor beer garden. It has a great atmosphere with occasional live music and multiple rooms to find your right vibe for the night.

The Ultimate Dublin Pub Crawl

Published by the student housing company on september 21, 2016 september 21, 2016.

Home to the world-famous Guinness Brewery, the city of Dublin knows a thing or two about pubs. You won’t be able to wander down one of the main streets without stumbling upon a traditional Irish drinking den or a more modern evolution.

This is perfect news for students! Take a night off from the bars and clubs and grab a bunch of your friends to head out on a Dublin pub crawl across the Irish capital. Here are the top picks of pubs you should stop at for a beer or two along the way.

beer-dublin-barrel-guinness

Brazen Head

With the honorary title of Ireland’s oldest pub (it’s been around since the late 12th century), the Brazen Head is well worth a visit. Inside it’s the epitome of a traditional pub, with exposed brick walls lined with plenty of vintage wartime ads and medieval-inspired scripts, as well as lots of wooden benches for big groups, making it a homey spot for a pint with all your friends.

If you time it right, the pub also has a reputation for showcasing live Irish music on most nights, from local bands and some more well-known talents. Sit back and enjoy a classic Irish night in seats once frequented by famous literary names, including James Joyce, Jonathan Swift and Brendan Behan.

The pub is just around the corner from Christ Church Cathedral and Dublin Castle, with a view onto the River Liffey, so the terrace garden is the perfect spot during the summer months. If you get a bit peckish, their fish and chips goes a treat with a beer.

pub-dublin-brazen-head

Davy Byrnes

Dublin’s original gastro-pub, Davy Byrnes, is a good place to start off your night of pub-hopping. It’s less than five minutes from Trinity College (on Duke Street), which is very convenient when you’re in need of a break from studying.

The interiors are really impressive, making this pub far from average – with a glass-domed ceiling, polished surfaces and maritime features, the pub is worth a visit even just for its artsy, majestic design.

Throughout the day they serve up some of the best seafood in the whole of Dublin, but if it’s beer you’re looking for, they’ve got you covered there too with plenty of beers on tap and craft bottled beers.

What’s more, you know a place is going to be good if Ireland’s most successful novelist, James Joyce, referenced it in his epic novel Ulysses.

Another pub that wins points for its decor, Toners is a rite of passage for any student in Dublin. Filled with glass cabinets of trinkets and curios, and decked out with flagstone floors and gilded mirrors, the pub ups the ante by blending traditional with modern, welcoming a younger crowd alongside the locals so you and your friends won’t feel out of place.

Toners became one of Dublin’s trendiest pubs when the Yard played host to Mumford & Sons back in 2012, and although the band may not be stopping by again any time soon, the outdoor beer garden is just the place to chill after a long day of studying.

It’s only fifteen minutes from Trinity College, by St Stephen’s Green and the National Archaeology Museum of Ireland, on Baggot Street. Take a seat where the king of Dracula Bram Stoker and legendary poet and playwright WB Yeats once sat, and soak up the sun.

pub-drinking-irish

The Palace Bar

Like many of the others that made this list, The Palace Bar is one of Dublin’s oldest pubs, with a literary reputation too, and is still decked out with Victorian influences. There’s always a lively vibe whatever day of the week. You can make the most of the sporting seasons here too – The Palace Bar airs big matches, from football and rugby to horse racing and hurling.

You won’t have any excuse for not visiting either – it’s right in the heart of the city on Fleet Street and just one minute’s walk from Trinity College, so you can guarantee a younger crowd (you might see some of your lecturers too!). If you’re bored of beer or want something a bit different, make sure you try The Palace Bar’s own whiskeys.

dublin-palace-bar

Cassidy’s Bar

This pub-cum-bar has a modern edge with its graffitied walls, old leather couches and all-round cosy vibe, making it a haven for students. There are a couple of nods to traditional Irish culture too, so you can get into the spirit of the country, with good company and a beer in hand.

Enjoy all three floors and choose whichever best suits your mood – there’s jazz in the basement, a piano bar, and a mezzanine area. Situated on Westmoreland Street, right by The Palace Bar and Trinity College, Cassidy’s is an ideal stopping point on any pub crawl.

street-dublin-ireland-trinity-college

The Cobblestone

In their own words, The Cobblestone is ‘a drinking pub with a music problem’, which beautifully fits the spec of the kind of place you want on a Dublin pub crawl with your friends. You’ll have to cross over the River Liffey to get onto the north side for King Street North, but it’s not too far from The Brazen Head to give you a little fresh air between pubs.

The pub has a stellar line-up of gigs throughout the week, with all kinds of music acts taking to the stage, from soul and country to classical instrumental orchestras. The Cobblestone is a great way to wind down the night and experience a different side to the city.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

student tours pub crawl

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

student tours pub crawl

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

student tours pub crawl

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

student tours pub crawl

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

student tours pub crawl

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

student tours pub crawl

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

student tours pub crawl

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
