Bong Me Up, Scotty: Pairing Weed Strains With The Original Star Trek Movies Image

Bong Me Up, Scotty: Pairing Weed Strains With The Original Star Trek Movies

By Michael Talbot-Haynes | October 1, 2023

“Space, that big black thing with twinkles that is fun to get high to. These are the voyages of the Lungship Cereal Box Prize, launching from the  Film Threat desert research lab. Its 8-hour mission to screen all four original Star Trek  films with four different strains of weed. Its final aim is to determine which strain with which film will get you to where no brain has gone before!”

So, if this were the 1960s  Star Trek  show, we would now have that great operatic la-la-laaaa opening theme. As these will be the theatrical  Star Trek  movies, your endless starry void is going to be filled by endless horns from the blaring brass of the soundtracks — honk, honk, honk, all throughout. Trumpets in double rows like shark teeth, there to chew your nerves apart. This element dashes my dream of being able to drift off to sleep at night to my old VHS copies of films. So, to help get the groovy going, this lungship needs a gallant crew of brave strains to get this party started. And now, thanks to the groundbreaking work of The Source dispensaries in Nevada, such a crew has been assembled.

One of the most trusted weed sources in Vegas and throughout the Silver State, The Source celebrated Star Trek Day on September 8 with various marijuana strains they paired with  Star Trek  characters for cosplay purposes and more. I think this is genius. I have paired strains with movies for years, but I love the idea of pairing strains with fictional characters. It is like something from the cult masterpiece  The Congress , where you can take drugs to feel like specific celebrities. It also opens up endless philosophical questions as to which strain is so hypnotic that you will become Counsellor Troi, with her naturally curly ESP and all.

Best of all, it gives me four strains grown by The Source’s in-house brands, CAMP and Flower House, to pair with the first four  Star Trek movies. Let’s make this clear: we would not be able to explore the distant reaches of outer space without The Source identifying these strains in relation to trekking. All you mind voyagers know that when you hit Vegas, it is of the utmost importance to immediately stash up at a reputable dispensary, and The Source is an excellent choice. As time travel seems to be a chronic occurrence in all of the franchise’s incarnations, we will begin with the fourth movie and work our way backward.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home  pairs with Grease Monkey:

You know weed has to go well with the “Save the Whales”  Star Trek  movie. Between the San Francisco in the 80s setting and the LSD jokes about Spock, the film already reeks of Pachouli. I remember this sequel was massive back in the day, especially since it followed the ’60s show blueprint of weaving real issues into sci-fi scenarios. It has aged badly, as a lot of what was brand spanking new about the storyline has now been retreaded into popcorn dust.

However, a fat nut of Grease Monkey will wake up your inner ’80s, so the film will rock your Amadeus. A cross between strain superstars Gorilla Glue #4 and Girl Scout Cookies, the Grease Monkey will plant a pair of wide eyes with a side of stupid grin as Kirk tries to save some humpbacks. The Source says if you want to feel like Scotty, this is the strain from Flower House to warp to. It will get you in exactly the right mindset for Scotty’s big scene with ancient P.C. desktops. It used to be a comedy sequence that was mostly funny to nerds but now has a universal gut laugh, especially with a smoldering log of Grease Monkey.

Strain of the Week: Star Trek

This nug brings the potent trainwreck and sensi star together..

star trek weed

By Carlos Swan

This week I was in search of an Indica dominate variety, and I found the space nugget of my dreams in Star Trek .

This strain weighs in at 28.33% THC and 2.17% CBD and joins the full body supernova of Sensi Star and my all-time mind-bending favorite, Trainwreck to blast your mind and body into the next solar system.

Once the nug jug lid was popped, I find myself imagining a slice of zesty lemon blueberry coffee cake. It's evident that the levels of limonene and myrcene are leading the terpene profile. This helps me explain the tangled feeling of being uplifted in my mind and the loosening of tension in the deepest nooks and crannies of my body. What in the world was this fabulous mess of aromas? Earthy sweetness meets it's counterpart in a floral and citrus mash up. This is what happens when two juggernaut strains bump uglies to create a magical alien spawn.

I would describe the structure of this bud as cake-like. The density is impressive and the layers of trichomes make it hard to distinguish the leaves from other parts. The vine like orange hairs creep from it's core and resemble little feelers to the universe. Don't be surprised if ones wondering eye has a hard time looking away…

This level of cannabis required a water lamp to fully enjoy the ride and " Nice as F*#K " on repeat. I loaded up a fat bowl of the sticky for a pre-podcast smoke session and learned quickly of it's power. The smoke swirled into my lungs gracefully and were filled before I realized what was happening. A familiar heavy tickle formed in the back of my throat. It felt as if someone rung out the tension out in my shoulders and back like a wet rag. A drum beat of energy began to build from within me. It was party time! My co-host and I were sent reeling for a time. Our memories may have been wiped. I giggled as we struggled with setting up the microphones.

We came to an agreement to never smoke before setting up ever again. The euphoria was like a warm blanket. Garage Band looked like some two-bit stranger and it took us three takes to get shit right. Our working memory was faulty, but our hearts were full. After the mule kick that is the first few bong rip of Star Trek, we found a common wave of energy. The pot thoughts were flowing at an incredible rate. My thought patterns were nothing short of "K.C. Jones high on cocaine, driving that train!" or a bent beat poet on a stream of conciseness voyage.

Piece of the Week | Star Trek Pipes

Rob schmidt  .

In honor of the new Star Trek movie “Into Darkness” we’ve scoured the web looking for Star Trek pipes and paraphernalia. Surprisingly there isn’t a lot of great stuff out there, but here’s what we could find:

Star Trek Pipes

I’m planning on seeing the new movie in the near future, and what better way to prep than to hit the Enterprise pipe?  Do you know of other pipes and bongs we can share? I’m guessing that with the success J.J. Abrams is having with this franchise that we’ll see some renewed interest from the younger generation in Star Trek, which hopefully will lead to some  more creative glasswork!

Star Trek Into Darkness Synopsis

Here’s the synopsis of the new movie:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes ‘Star Trek Into Darkness.’ When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew. Star Trek Already Confirmed the 1 Species More Powerful Than the Q

To me, seven of nine is star trek’s most impressive character, after 58 years, star trek is finally killing off scotty - theory explained.

  • The nature of Trelane's mysterious god-like species is revealed in Star Trek #21 after 57 years.
  • The connection between Trelane and the Q Continuum is questioned in this latest issue.
  • The absence of Qs in the assembly of gods raises questions about their responsibilities to our reality.

Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek #21!

Trelane was one of Star Trek ’s most intriguing one off characters, and after 57 years, the truth about his god-like species has been resolved. Captain Kirk and company met Trelane early in the five-year mission, and the petulant god made a huge impression on fans. Now, a century after first contact with Trelane, Star Trek #21 makes a stunning revelation about him and his people.

Star Trek #21 is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Megan Levens. The gods of the Star Trek universe reside in the Pleroma, and have gathered to address the issue of reviving the Organians. Trelane is among them. Apollo brushes a quip from Trelane off, telling the young god that his parents were invited–not him. Trelane informs Apollo that his parents have abdicated responsibility for this reality.

Trelane, on the other hand, was very interested in the proceedings, and came to the meeting.

Trelane Was One of Star Trek's First God-Like Beings

Some fans have speculated trelane is connected with the q.

Trelane would return in various licensed media, including a well-received novel, Q Squared , that drew a connection between the child god and the Q Continuum.

Trelane was one of the first villains Captain Kirk met in the classic Star Trek television program. Debuting in the first season episode “The Squire of Gothos,” the god-like Trelane held Kirk and his crew prisoner, using his powers to toy with them. Trelane only made one live-action appearance, but captured the imaginations of fans. Trelane would return in various licensed media, including a well-received novel, Q Squared , that drew a connection between the child god and the Q Continuum. The link between Q and Trelane by this point has almost become canon.

On the surface, Star Trek #21 seems to retcon the connection between the two, now suggesting there was never one at all. When Trelane mentions his parents, he does not call them “Q” or “the Continuum.” It is possible, however, that Trelane is indeed another renegade from the Continuum. Trelane says his parents abdicated this reality, but did not state why. In an early issue of IDW’s Star Trek comic, Q told Captain Sisko he was leaving our reality. It was assumed Q was fleeing Kahless and his god-killer array, but he may have been playing one of his games.

Q, Star Trek's trickster figure, has very few peers in the universe, but another, surprise species can give him a serious run for his money.

Why Did Trelane's Parents Turn Their Backs On Our Reality?

And is there still a connection between q and trelane.

Members of the Q Continuum were also conspicuously absent from the assembly of gods in the Pleroma. If Trelane’s parents are indeed Qs, and they shirked responsibility for our reality, then it implies the species has a duty to lesser beings, which is a huge revelation about the Continuum. The Pleroma meets and votes on matters of universal importance, and for the Q to not be present seems to be a glaring omission. Trelane could very well be the last Q left in the Star Trek universe, remaining behind for reasons that are his own.

Star Trek #21 is on sale now from IDW Publishing!

'Star Trek: Prodigy' warps into Season 2 with new Netflix trailer (video)

R esurrected by Netflix and zooming onto their streaming platform starting on July 1, 2024, the award-winning animated children's series, " Star Trek: Prodigy ," is cleared for launch and CBS Studios has just revealed the thrilling first trailer and key art for its next 20-episode mission.

This highly underrated project was developed by Emmy Award winners Kevin and Dan Hageman ("Trollhunters," "Ninjago") in collaboration with Alex Kurtzman to be the first all-ages "Star Trek" show out of spacedock, " Star Trek: Prodigy " premiered on Paramount+ in the fall of 2021 hauling a 20-episode split season that ended in December of 2022.

The colorful kids' show centered around a rowdy gang of alien teenagers on the mining colony of Tars Lamora outside Federation space who discover an abandoned Starfleet ship, the USS Protostar, and must band together to escape from the Delta Quadrant all while learning about Starfleet during their cosmic misadventures.

Following its cancellation at its original home at Paramount+, Trekkies demanded that the series live long and prosper and mounted a serious online campaign to keep the show traveling at warp speed. Netflix thankfully came to the rescue and re-released the premiere season last Christmas to prep fans for the new adventures.

Here's the official Season 2 synopsis:

"In Season 2, these six young outcasts who make up the 'Prodigy' crew are assigned a new mission aboard the USS Voyager-A to rescue Captain Chakotay (voiced by Robert Beltran) and bring peace to Gwyn’s (voiced by Ella Purnell) home world. However, when their plan goes astray, it creates a time paradox that jeopardizes both their future and past."

"Prodigy's" stellar vocal cast includes Kate Mulgrew (Hologram Kathryn Janeway), Brett Gray (Dal), Ella Purnell (Gwyn), Rylee Alazraqui (Rok-Tahk), Angus Imrie (Zero), Jason Mantzoukas (Jankom Pog), Dee Bradley Baker (Murf), John Noble (The Diviner) and Jimmi Simpson (Drednok).

Season 2's additional voice co-stars are Robert Picardo (The Doctor), Jason Alexander (Doctor Noum), Daveed Diggs (Commander Tysess), Jameela Jamil (Ensign Asencia), Ronny Cox (Admiral Jellico) and Michaela Dietz (Maj’el).

"We deeply appreciate our fans who have stood by us and our passionate crew who made this all possible. The work speaks for itself, but it's the heart that will endure," said co-showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman in a statement regarding the sophomore season's debut.

Landing July 1, 2024, "Star Trek: Prodigy" hails from CBS' Eye Animation Productions, Nickelodeon Animation, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth act as executive producers with co-showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman. Ben Hibon multitasks as a main director, executive producer, and series lead creator.

Foundation honoring ‘Star Trek’ creator offers million-dollar prize to develop AI that’s ‘used for good’

To boldly go where no man has gone before.

That’s the mission of the USS Enterprise — and arguably the aim of a $1-million prize being offered through a foundation created to honor the father of the “Star Trek” franchise.

The Roddenberry Foundation — named for Gene Roddenberry — announced Tuesday that this year’s biennial award would focus on artificial intelligence that benefits humanity.

Lior Ipp, chief executive of the foundation, told The Times there’s a growing recognition that AI is becoming more ubiquitous and will affect all aspects of our lives.

“We are trying to … catalyze folks to think about what AI looks like if it’s used for good,” Ipp said, “and what it means to use AI responsibly, ethically and toward solving some of the thorny global challenges that exist in the world.”

California lawmakers are trying to regulate AI before it’s too late. Here’s how

California lawmakers are trying to get ahead of AI in the workplace, but are already playing catchup

June 19, 2024

The Roddenberry Prize is open to early-stage ventures — including nonprofits and for-profits — across the globe.

Each cycle, the focal point of the award changes. The spotlight on AI and machine learning arrives as recent strides in the technology have sparked excitement as well as fear.

Concerns abound that AI threatens privacy, intellectual property and jobs, including the work performed by this reporter. Although it can automate busywork, it may also replicate the harmful biases of the people who created it.

California legislators are racing to address anxieties through about 50 AI-related bills , many of which aim to install safeguards around the technology, which lawmakers say could cause societal harm. The proposed legislation targets AI-related fears ranging from data security to racial discrimination.

“We’ve seen with other technologies that we don’t do anything until well after there’s a big problem,” said state Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), who wrote a bill that would require companies developing large AI models to do safety testing.

“Social media had contributed many good things to society ... but we know there have been significant downsides to social media, and we did nothing to reduce or to mitigate those harms,” he said. “And now we’re playing catch-up. I prefer not to play catch-up.”

Ipp said the foundation shares the broad concern about AI and sees the award as a means to potentially contribute to creating those guardrails.

The language of the application states that it’s seeking ethical proposals. And much like the multicultural, multi-planetary cast of “Star Trek,” it’s supposed to be inclusive.

“Any use of AI or machine learning must be fair, transparent, respectful of individual rights and privacy, and should explicitly design against bias or discrimination against individuals, communities or groups,” according to the prize website .

Inspiration for the theme was also borne out of the applications the foundation received last time around. Ipp said the prize, which is “issue-agnostic” but focused on early-stage tech, produced compelling uses of AI and machine learning in agriculture, healthcare, biotech and education.

“So,” he said, “we sort of decided to double down this year on specifically AI and machine learning.”

The most recent winner was Sweden-based Elypta , which Ipp said is using liquid biopsies, such as a blood test, to detect cancer early.

Though the foundation isn’t prioritizing a particular issue, the application states that it is looking for ideas that have the potential to push the needle on one or more of the United Nations’ 17 sustainable development goals , which include eliminating poverty and hunger as well as boosting climate action and protecting life on land and underwater.

‘Star Trek’ is the greatest sci-fi franchise of all. Why it’s stood the test of time

Full of ideas and emotions, the ever-expanding ‘Star Trek’ canon is still finding new ways to go where no TV show has gone before, 55 years on.

Oct. 28, 2021

“Star Trek,” which first aired in 1966, featured tons of enviable tech, including the universal translator, the tricorder — a handheld device that performed environmental scans, data recording and data analysis — and the transporter, useful for when you need to hop to an alien planet in a pinch.

And you could always trust Capt. Kirk, Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy to employ the gadgets for good.

Those who meet the eligibility criteria for the Roddenberry Prize can apply through July 12. The grant will be awarded to one winner in November.

The foundation was launched by Gene Roddenberry’s family after his death in 1991.

Things To Do

Adam nimoy shares journey in ‘the most human: reconciling with my father’.

(Photo adamnimoy.com)

At 67, Nimoy’s new memoir, “The Most Human: Reconciling with My Father, Leonard Nimoy” (Chicago Review Press), examines the gulf between the public image of the “Star Trek” icon and the reality of a distant father.

Also stressed is the importance of the 12-step program that helped father and son reconcile, heal and bond. Nimoy makes an appearance June 30 at Boston’s West End Museum, the neighborhood in which his father grew up.

“This is really the story of the journey of my father and myself, where I started to come around and reconcile with my dad. That’s the focus,” he said in a phone interview from his LA home.

Leonard Nimoy, he readily conceded, “was a difficult man to communicate with and on a personal level, it was hard to connect with him. We didn’t have many things in common — until I started watching him on TV.

“He was a man of few words, much like his father. He could be very introspective, distant and cool. There was a discomfort with him, where I just didn’t feel connected with him.”

His mother compensated. “My sister and I were very fortunate that our mother was very affectionate, loving and supportive. We really felt loved and taken care of by her. Also, her parents had moved to Los Angeles from Cordova, Alaska, and they were also very demonstrative, very affectionate people. So we had good modeling on that front.”

His book notes how father and son both ventured down parallel paths with marriages leading to divorce, battling addiction and finding recovery.

“That worked out well. We had a very great relationship the last years of his life. We had similar experiences: My dad and mom were married for 32 years and that marriage ended. Not long thereafter, my dad went into recovery.

“My marriage ended after 18 years, and immediately I went into 12-step recovery.

“My dad was the alcoholic in the family, something that he had admitted to on many occasions. I was mostly a pothead; I smoked pot pretty much every day for 30 years.

“I never considered myself an alcoholic. But I identify as one because I go to AA meetings because it’s 12-step recovery. It’s all the same. Alcohol was not what we call our drug of choice. It was just marijuana.

“But the recovery work is all the same. We abstain from everything, and we practice the same principles of working the program.

“With my dad, we finally figured out how to reconcile with one another and become very close.”

Mick Jagger, of The Rolling Stones, performs during a concert...

For most of the next two hours, Jagger nearly single-handedly carried the concert. He defied the limitations often associated with his 80-year age and refused to mail in a single verse. Questions about the Stones’ predictability, purpose and joyfulness aside, the physically fit singer continues to take performance as seriously as anyone in the business. He nailed his deliveries, projected enthusiasm, embodied determination and gave a master class in the art of animated dance moves. AARP, the tour sponsor, couldn’t have dreamt up a better advertisement.

Playing the 40th Chicago concert of their career and the first local gig without their late drummer Charlie Watts (who died in 2021), the Stones frequently needed the boost. The impossible task of succeeding Watts fell to the talented Steve Jordan, whose collaborative relationship with guitarist Keith Richards stretches back to the Reagan era. In a possible nod to Watts’ famously keen fashion style, Jordan sported a smart suit and black sunglasses. He knew the parts inside-out, though his approach — slightly busier and heavier, with less swing, glide and refinement than the jazz-leaning Watts — altered the rhythmic structures in ways obvious to anyone with a history of seeing the band.

Still, as they say, the show must go on. Nearly 35 years after they mounted a comeback trek that prompted some critics to crack wise about their ages in the context of rock ‘n’ roll, the Rolling Stones keep on keepin’ on, in spite of internal issues, health setbacks and mortality. In the face of endless, cliched stories that lazily incorporate their song titles (“The Last Time,” “It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It)”). Their persistence — along with their ubiquitous classics and iconic tongue-and-lips logo — have made the Stones the most widely identifiable rock group in history.

In many ways, the Stones are as much a brand as a band, and one that apparently never goes out of style. Modeled by chic young adults, the vast array of apparel hawked on their website gives fashion houses a run for their money. While Taylor Swift inspires headlines about boosting local economies and altering countries’ inflation rates, the Stones remain a box-office juggernaut that regularly grosses upwards of $10 million per gig. This after creating the blueprint for stadium tours in the late ’80s.

Lineup alterations aside, little regarding the Stones has changed since they released their last great album (“Tattoo You”) in 1981. The primary differences today concern the environment in which the group operates. The concept of selling out no longer exists. Rock ‘n’ roll ceded its dominance to hip hop and pop decades ago. Standalone artists overtook groups in terms of star power. Consider: You don’t even need all the fingers on one hand to count how many bands formed since the dawn of the 21st century can fill a hockey arena for two shows.

Indeed, the sense that the imitable combination of sound, interplay and chemistry that transpired on the grand if somewhat minimalist Soldier Field stage might soon be difficult to come by seemed lost on no one — including the last three core Stones themselves and their supporting cast, particularly longtime keyboardist Chuck Leavell and Chicago native Darryl Jones, whose full-bodied bass lines provided a steadying element when other aspects wavered.

Sticking to the center of the stage, tufts of white-and-gray hair struggling to emerge beyond his trademark headband, Richards occasionally appeared reticent and noncommittal. The 80-year-old looked as if he’d slowed. He struck noticeably sour notes on “Start Me Up,” adopted a perfunctory stance during his vocal lead on a flat “Tell Me Straight” and required several songs to find his footing. Yet Richards’ personalized technique — he navigated by feeling, read what the material demanded and reacted accordingly, ignoring timing and placement conventions — corresponded to a manner of disciplined improvisation that can only be shaped over decades of experience.

When it sparked, his rapport with fellow guitarist Ron Wood gave diehards visions of a more youthful past and newer fans a reason to savor the moments when the duo locked into a groove and held tight. Jabbing and scraping their instruments’ strings, Richards and Wood juggled decay and distortion and communicated with scuffed tones, squawking riffs and sharp, twangy fills. The grittiest of their output doubled as rude interjections (“Little T&A”), R&B rejoinders (“Tumbling Dice”), clarion calls (“Jumpin’ Jack Flash”) and booze-soaked lures (“Honky Tonk Women”).

As expected, the Stones leveraged familiarity to their advantage. Along with one fan-selected song (a watered-down “She’s a Rainbow”) and one dusted-off gem (a reggae-tinted “Get Off of My Cloud”), four songs from their recent “Hackney Diamonds” LP cracked a setlist anchored by the same hits the group has featured for eons. Nothing released between 1981 and 2023 made the cut. Yes, people pay big bucks to hear favorites. But why not tackle one of the other seldom-played numbers (“Bite My Head Off,” “Fool to Cry,” “She’s So Cold”) that lost the popular vote? Or toss a couple of known albeit deeper tracks into the mix?

Instead, the energetic and attitudinal antidote to the pervasive politeness stemmed from Jagger. Adorned in black jeans, and modeling an assortment of jackets and shirts, the livewire singer justified the presence of both the stage’s short runway and extended wings. He strutted, waggled, pointed, shimmied, shuffled, summoned, pouted, preened and vogued. His petite hips turned on an imaginary swivel; his loose shoulders flirted with joint dislocation; his restless hands flapped as if trying to shake off a tingling numbness.

Save for the 15 minutes he went backstage and let Richards handle the microphone, Jagger alternated between the roles as singer, cheerleader, MC, jokester — he deemed the evening’s presidential debate “Viagarapalooza” — and storyteller. He touched on the band’s first trip to Chicago in 1964 and fortune at meeting its idols (Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Chuck Berry) at Chess Records. He failed to mention that the studio sat about a mile from where he currently stood, or that the Stones recorded a batch of songs while there. Too bad the group didn’t play one of them as a full-circle tribute.

The closest the Rolling Stones got to musically acknowledging the city’s blues impact on their fare arrived during a tease of “Sweet Home Chicago” amid a harmonica-laden run-through of “Midnight Rambler.” The circa-1969 tune emerged as one of the few that hinted at its original menace. Another, a long-fuse reading of “Gimme Shelter,” also of ‘69 vintage, benefitted from the fiery participation and soulful blare of backup vocalist Chanel Haynes.

“War, children,” Jagger and Haynes sang, conscious of the ominous warnings that followed. “It’s just a shot away.” For the briefest instant, all the years and wrinkles melted away, and the Stones were again ragtag British dissidents spreading and sounding an urgent alarm amid an ever-tumultuous global climate. Godspeed.
