USS Valiant

From star trek: theurgy wiki.

The USS Valiant (NCC-74210) was a 24th century Federation starship, a Defiant-class escort in Starfleet service in the 2370s decade. This ship was in active service around the Dominion War . Its commanding officer was Ramirez, until his death in 2373, when Red Squad cadet Tim Watters replaced him. (DS9 episode: "Valiant")

It was one of a number of vessels bearing this name of numerous vessels from history, all named for the common meaning of the term "valiant". (DS9 video game: Dominion Wars)

Service history and disposition

The Valiant was launched from the Antares Ship Yards on stardate 49456.5 in 2372. It was assigned as a training ship for the elite cadet corps Red Squad under the command of Captain Ramirez. (DS9 episode: "Valiant")

Only fifty out of the thousands of cadets would be assigned to Red Squad and serve on the Valiant. The ship split its time between the Sol system and locations that Starfleet Command found suitable for the ship's elite cadet crew. Unlike other vessels, the Valiant was fitted with detachable EPS conduits to allow commissioned officer to drill cadets on repairing damage.

In 2372, a computer error led to a quantum torpedo engaging accidentally, ripping a 5-meter hole into the vessel and killing two officers and ten cadets. Due to the detachable EPS conduit architecture, main power remained online, allowing the Valiant to continue operating through the tragedy. (Star Trek Adventures module: Gamma Quadrant Sourcebook)

In late-2373, the Valiant began a three month training cruise mission to circumnavigate the entire Federation before returning home. The plan was for the cadets to run the ship while the officers aboard observed and critiqued their performance.

The Valiant was assigned as a training ship for the elite cadet corps Red Squad. During the training cruise mission, the ship was transiting the Kepla sector when the Dominion War broke out and the ship was trapped behind enemy lines. During the attempt to return to Federation territory, the Valiant was attacked by a Cardassian battle cruiser near El-Gatark and all the regular officers, including Captain Ramirez, were killed or critically wounded, leaving the cadets in command. The Valiant lost main power and was adrift; fortunately, the Cardassian cruiser was no better off. The cadets got weapons and impulse engines back on-line within three hours, and were able to destroy that cruiser. The next day, just before Ramirez died, he appointed Cadet Tim Watters to take command of the Valiant.

Early in the war, Starfleet ordered the Valiant to track and collect technical data on a previously unidentified Jem'Hadar battleship that was believed to be operating in the area. However, because the Valiant was operating under complete radio silence and limited to a speed of warp 3.2, Starfleet was unaware that the ship's officers were dead, and Watters decided to undertake the mission.

Around Stardate 51825, the Valiant rescued Jake Sisko and Ensign Nog from the runabout Shenandoah, which was fleeing from a Jem'Hadar attack on Starbase 257. Nog assisted the Valiant's crew in repairing their warp drive, and the ship finally managed to catch up to the Dominion battleship and obtain detailed intelligence concerning the enemy's capabilities.

The plan to attack a certain section of the Dominion ship failed to destroy the vessel, which launched its powerful weapons against the Valiant. Jake Sisko, Nog and Dorian Collins were able to escape the Valiant before it was destroyed.

The destruction of the Valiant.

Captain Watters' overconfidence, however, proved to be the Valiant's undoing. Rather than returning the valuable information to Starfleet , Watters decided to attempt to destroy the battleship by exploiting a perceived flaw in her construction. Vastly outgunned, the Valiant was quickly devastated after an unsuccessful attempt to destroy the enemy's antimatter storage system primary support braces. With Captain Watters and most of the bridge crew killed, Nog gave the order to abandon ship. Two of the four escape pods launched were destroyed by the Jem'Hadar ship, while a third was destroyed when it was unable to clear the exploding Valiant. The remaining pod, containing Jake Sisko, Nog and Dorian Collins, was able to escape the Valiant before it was destroyed and flee the battle area and was eventually recovered by the Valiant's sister ship, the USS Defiant .

Out of a crew of 35 (plus Nog and Jake), only three survived the battle. (DS9 episode: "Valiant")

Dorian Collins, the only member of Red Squad to survive, spent some time thinking about her experiences aboard the Valiant. (DS9 short story: "Dorian's Diary")

Starfleet Academy later established the Valiant commendation, an award named for the Valiant and its crew. (ST reference: Celebrations)

By 2379, another Defiant-class starship had been named USS Valiant (NCC-75418) and was part of Battle Group Omega. (TNG movie: Star Trek: Nemesis)

FIRST LOOK: Attack Wing Wave 22 -- U.S.S. Valiant

star trek valiant ship

This month, NECA/WizKids will release Star Trek: Attack Wing Wave 22 and StarTrek.com has the exclusive First Look at the ships in the upcoming expansion packs, starting with the U.S.S. Valiant. The U.S.S. Valiant NCC-74210 is a Defiant-class starship that was originally assigned as a training ship for elite cadet corps. Captain Ramirez was given command of the U.S.S. Valiant in order to train “Red Squad” during a three-month mission where the crew was expected to take control of the Valiant while being observed by senior officers. The U.S.S. Valiant soon found itself trapped behind enemy lines when the Cardassians took over the Kepla sector during the Dominion War. Attempting to return to Federation space, the Valiant encountered a Cardassian Battle Cruiser near El-Gatark. Within minutes all senior officers, including the Captain, were either killed or critically injured. The U.S.S. Valiant lost power and remained adrift while the cadets worked to get the weapons and engines back online. Under the command of Tim Watters, the Valiant and its crew were able to destroy the Cardassian Ship and return to the Federation.

The U.S.S. Valiant has one additional shield compared to the generic version of the ship and gains two Crew Upgrade slots while losing a Weapon Upgrade slot. The special ability for the U.S.S. Valiant allows you to gain one additional attack die when attacking with Photon Torpedoes, if you discard that card during the Roll Attack Dice step. The Captain in this pack is Tim Watters, this card adds one Crew Upgrade slot to your upgrade bar. Also, as an action, you may remove all Disabled Upgrade Tokens from all of your Crew Upgrades. Red Squad is an Elite Talent that allows you to start the game with a number of tokens (Evade, Scan or Battle Stations) on this card equal to the number of Federation Crew Upgrades assigned to your ship (max 4). During the Activation Phase, before performing your Action, you may remove 1 token from this card and place it beside your ship. Desperate times call for desperate measures and here we can see that Captain Tim Watters makes sure the cadets of Red Squad operate at maximum efficiency, while the Elite Talent grants you bonuses for each Federation crew member.

The crew of U.S.S. Valiant all work together to try and restore weapons and functionality to the ship. Riley Aldrin Shepard allows you to take an action to disable this card and perform an additional green maneuver with a speed of 1. Your ship cannot be target locked this round and if there is already a target lock on your ship, you may remove that token. Karen Ferris allows you to disable this card instead of spending a Target Lock when targeting an opposing ship with Photon or Quantum Torpedoes. Dorian Collins may be disabled to immediately repair 1 Shield if your ship suffers damage to its Hull. Nog can be disabled as an action to repair 1 damage to your Hull or Shields, OR if you execute a Red Maneuver you may disable this card to remove 1 Auxiliary Power Token from beside your ship. Photon Torpedoes is the Weapon Upgrade in this pack. This secondary weapon may be fired for 5 attack dice at Range 2-3. You may convert 1 of your Battle Stations results into 1 Critical Hit result.

Working together, the cadets from Red Squad were able to defeat the Cardassians and return the U.S.S. Valiant to the Federation. The crew of Valiant proved that teamwork and determination was enough to overcome any obstacle. Recreate the battle of El-Gatarik with the special scenario included in this pack and race against the clock to restore power to your ship.

Did you know

  • Trivia It has often been pointed out that Nog, a commissioned officer, outranked the entire cadet crew of the Valiant and should have assumed command when he arrived. Ronald D. Moore explained his rationale for the command structure in an AOL chat: "I decided to go with a somewhat older idea that a lawfully designated commanding officer cannot be removed from command except by someone of flag rank. (I'm over-simplifying this idea, but this is roughly the way that things worked in the 18th-19th century Royal Navy.) Captain Watters was given a valid commission and had held his command for eight months. It didn't seem like I was stretching things too far to allow him to continue in that role when Nog arrived - and remember that Nog was also commissioned as a young cadet who hadn't even been at the Academy for as long as Watters".
  • Goofs Watters claims a battlefield commission, but his story later is that he took over when the actual commissioned officers were all killed. The death of a superior officer would only place him in command until a commissioned officer would arrive. As such, Nog, being commissioned already, should automatically become the ship's captain upon his arrival.

Nog : You gonna write a story about all this?

Jake Sisko : Probably.

Nog : What are you going to say?

Jake Sisko : What do you think I should say?

Nog : That it was a good ship, with a good crew, that made a mistake. We... let ourselves blindly follow Captain Watters, and he led us over a cliff.

Chief Dorian Collins : That's not true. Captain Watters was a great man.

Jake Sisko : Dorian, he got everyone killed.

Chief Dorian Collins : If he failed, it's because we failed him.

Nog : [to Jake] Put that in your story too. Let people read it, and decide for themselves.

[Nog gives Dorian his Red Squad insignia]

Nog : He may have been a hero. He may even have been a great man. But in the end, he was a bad captain.

Valiant-6089

The USS Valiant (NCC-6089) in 2368 .

A Defiant -class warship USS Valiant (NCC-6089) was proposed in 2368 in the aftermath of the Battle of Wolf 359 . It remained an unused concept in favor of launching the Defiant -class prototype USS Defiant . ( The Official Starships Collection Issue Bonus issue 29: "USS Valiant Concept")

After years of trial and mothballing, the Defiant entered service in 2371 . Its master systems display initially depicted the ship and its systems in the form of a Valiant -class vessel. ( DS9 episode : " The Search ")

Valiant detonates

The Defiant -class Valiant is destroyed.

The USS Valiant (NCC-74210) then entered service as a regular Defiant -class warship but was lost during the Dominion War . ( DS9 episode : " Valiant ")

USS Valiant NCC-74210

The second Defiant -class USS Valiant .

It was replaced by the fellow Defiant -class destroyer USS Valiant (NCC-75418) by 2376 . ( ST video game : Armada )

A new prototype Valiant entered service in the time of the Federation-Klingon War of 2405-2410 . The design was an evolution of the 2370s -era Defiant . The Valiant appeared more compact than its sister classes. The first ship of the class was the USS Valiant (NCC-60890) in 2409 . Ships of the class were rated as tactical escorts .

From 2410 onward, the Valiant represented its class in the Starfleet Shipyards Operations interface. ( STO - Klingon War mission : " Welcome to Earth Spacedock ")

Khitomer Alliance flag officer in, or aligned with, Starfleet, deployed Valiant for missions around the galaxy 's four quadrants as part of the four-quadrant strategy . ( STO - Klingon War mission : " Welcome to Earth Spacedock ", admiralty system)

Legendary pilot warship classes

The Defiant -class family.

Following the Battle of Excalbia on stardate 84999.22 [2] in January 2411 , which saw the prominent involvement of hero ships from the Federation's past and present, the Valiant was among the tactical escorts that received a refit to legendary starship qualifications. ( STO - J'Ula's Discovery missions : " The Measure of Morality (Part 2) ", " Welcome to Earth Spacedock ")

The Valiant was upgraded to a tier 6 legendary pilot warship , matching the qualifications of the upgraded Defiant class, premiered with the USS Valiant refit . ( STO website : 10th Anniversary Legendary Starship Bundles : Legendary Pilot Warship )

Star Trek Confirms Nog's Post-Dominion War Fate

Every star trek series finale ranked worst to best, 10 most important star trek time travelers.

Star Trek has had four starships named USS Defiant, especially the vessel in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine ,  but they don't share the same legacy. While the most famous Star Trek ship is the USS Enterprise , shows like Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Discovery had their own eponymous starships which each boasts historic voyages. However, the starships named USS Defiant all had very eclectic histories that altered the fate of the Prime and Mirror Universes.

Star Trek: The Original Series was the first to introduce the USS Defiant, which was nearly identical to the Constitution -class Enterprise commanded by Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner). The 23rd century Defiant is infamous for being lost in space, but it actually both time-traveled to the 22nd century and crossed over to the Mirror Universe. Meanwhile, most Trekkers are more familiar with the 24th century USS Defiant in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which was commanded by Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks). There are actually three versions of  DS9 's  Defiant , however, including a doppelganger built in the Mirror Universe to fight the Klingon/Cardassian Alliance.

Related: Star Trek: The Defiant's Original Name (& Why DS9 Changed It)

The DS9 season 6 episode "Valiant" also introduced the USS Valiant, an identical Defiant -class ship crewed by Starfleet's Red Squad cadets that was destroyed in a battle with the Dominion. Valiant was the original name intended for DS9' s starship before it was changed to Defiant thanks to an edict by the studio, but this was a fortuitous switch. The name Defiant far better conveys the scrappy nature of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , which was a black sheep Star Trek show in its time that has come to be regarded as an influential forebearer of Peak TV and is now seen as one of the best Star Trek series of all.

It took 3 seasons for the space station-set DS9 to get its own starship, but the Defiant has since become one of Star Trek 's most famous and beloved ships, even though it, confusingly, has no shared history with the 23rd-century starship of the same name seen in TOS and in Star Trek: Enterprise .

USS Defiant - 23rd Century

The Constitution -class USS Defiant (NCC-1764) made its first appearance in TOS season 3's "The Tholian Web" and it was trapped in a phenomenon called a spatial interphase. The insanity caused by the phenomenon caused the crew to kill each other and the Captain's neck was found broken when the crew of the Enterprise beamed aboard. The Defiant then vanished and it wasn't until Star Trek: Enterprise  that the fate of the Defiant was revealed almost 40 years later.

As seen in Star Trek: Enterprise season 4's "In A Mirror Darkly" two-parter, the Defiant not only jumped into the Mirror Universe but it time-traveled to the 22nd century as well. The Tholians took possession of the Defiant but the 23rd-century starship was liberated by Commander Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula), who planned to use its advanced technology to conquer the Terran Empire and declare himself Emperor. But Archer was betrayed by Hoshi Sato (Linda Park), who took command of the Defiant and declared herself Empress. It's not known what eventually happened to the Defiant, whether it was used as part of the Terran Starfleet or if it was stripped down for its parts and technology.

Related: Star Trek: Discovery Revealed The Mirror Universe's 32nd Century

Nevertheless, the presence of the Defiant  changed the direction of the Mirror Universe as it gave the succeeding line of Terran Emperors, including Star Trek: Discovery 's Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) knowledge of the parallel reality, including the existence of the Federation, although this information was kept secret from most Terrans to keep them from being "contaminated" by the Federation's values. The Defiant 's power and technology also gave the Terrans a leg up on the rest of the Alpha Quadrant and contributed to the Terrans' dominance until their empire eventually collapsed.

USS Defiant - 24th Century

In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's 24th-century era, the name "Defiant" was resurrected for the Defiant -class starships, which was designed with the express purpose of defeating the Borg in battle. In fact, Benjamin Sisko, a survivor of Star Trek: The Next Generation 's Battle of Wolf 359 against the Borg, was one of the designers of the Defiant , but the prototype warship was overpowered, over-gunned, and its design flaws threatened the ship to fly apart. In his third year of commanding DS9, Sisko requested the Defiant  (NX-74205) be assigned to him to meet the threat of the Dominion. Captain Sisko commanded the Defiant until it was destroyed in the Dominion War's Battle of Chin'toka during DS9 season 7.

DS9 's Defiant was a unique and beloved starship in Star Trek canon. The small and spartan vessel wasn't designed for families and it boasted features like pulsed phaser cannons, quantum torpedoes, ablative armor, and a Romulan cloaking device, making the Defiant a rare Starfleet ship authorized to use a practical invisibility screen. The "tough little ship" also appeared in the feature film Star Trek: First Contact , where it survived a battle with a Borg Cube and was left "adrift but salvageable" . While Paramount and Star Trek producer Rick Berman initially resisted DS9 getting its own starship, the Defiant  proved to be a necessary addition to the series that vastly opened up DS9 's storytelling possibilities. It's now hard to imagine Star Trek: Deep Space Nine without the Defiant , which has taken its place among Star Trek's greatest starships.

ISS Defiant - Mirror Universe

The Mirror Universe 's ISS Defiant (NX-74205) was built from the design specs of the Prime Universe's USS Defiant which were stolen from Deep Space Nine by "Smiley" O'Brien (Colm Meaney). In the DS9 season 4 episode "Shattered Mirror", the Terran Resistance built their Defiant to defend Terok Nor from the Klingon/Cardassian invasion fleet looking to retake the station. However, the Terrans ran into the same problems in regards to the Defiant 's design flaws, the Prime Universe's Captain Sisko was tricked into traveling into the Mirror Universe to fix the starship before the Battle of Terok Nor.

Related: Star Trek: The Mirror Universe's History Explained

Captain Sisko had the ISS  Defiant 's inertial dampeners overhauled to enhance the ship's structural integrity and the repairs were completed in time for the battle. With Sisko in command, the Defiant managed to do enough damage to the Alliance's flagship that the Regent, Worf (Michael Dorn), was forced to retreat. The ISS Defiant later reappeared in DS9 season 7's "The Emperor's New Cloak", where it defeated Worf's ship again thanks to sabotage, and the Terrans were able to take the Regent prisoner.

USS Sao Paulo Renamed Defiant

In the final episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Captain Sisko received a brand new Defiant -class starship, the USS Sao Paulo (NCC-75633). However, Admiral Ross (Barry Jenner) had a surprise for Sisko: special dispensation to rename the Sao Paulo the USS Defiant. The new Defiant boasted upgrades like redesigned shield generators, a more powerful warp drive, and a slightly different bridge interior. Captain Sisko commanded the second Defiant into the Federation's victory in the Dominion War.

In the documentary What We Left Behind , the apocryphal first episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 8 revealed that the Defiant was under the command of Captain Nog (Aron Eisenberg) 20 years later, before it was destroyed in what would ignite a new, season-long mystery.

Starship Valiant: A Star Trek Fan Production

Extended Interview: Michael L. King talks to Brittni Barger about his Star Trek Fan Production, Starship Valiant . From Beyond Geek – Beam Me Up episode.

About Starship Valiant

Starship Valiant is a new web series in development at Starbase Studios and created by Michael L. King. The science fiction series takes place roughly after the 3rd season of the original series and focuses on the starship USS Valiant NCC-1707.

Starship Valiant is a web series inspired by the 1966 classic series created by Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek. The show is set after the 3rd season of Star Trek and follows the exploits of the Federation Starship USS Valiant, a Constitution-Class ship.

The vessel is captained by Jackson K. Bishop, a stellar man at the helm but riddled with personal challenges. His second in command is Leeza S. Kennedy, an officer who excels in all that she does.

The missions of the Valiant are not that of direct exploration but she is a true “police-ship,” in that she goes where she is needed and most of time this elicits hostile territory. It is our goal to create a series that strives on the human condition. Human beings at their best but not always triumphant in their missions. Personality clashes and deeply developed characters that people can relate to.

The show is set after the 3rd season of Star Trek and follows the exploits of the Federation Starship USS Valiant NCC-1707, a Constitution-Class ship captained by Jackson K. Bishop, a stellar man at the helm but riddled with personal challenges. His second in command is Leeza S. Kennedy, an officer who excels in all that she does.

The missions of the Valiant are not those of direct exploration, she is more of a “police-ship,” in that she goes where she is needed and most of time this means hostile territory. Their goal has been to create a series that focusses on the human condition: human beings at their best but not always triumphant in their missions, with personality clashes and deeply developed characters that people can relate to.

Summary [ ]

Book one [ ].

The Valiant opens aboard the SS Valiant under the command of Captain Carlos Tarasco in the year 2069 . A mysterious force has thrown the Valiant far from home and now the crew faces the grueling prospect of crossing the Galactic Barrier if they ever want to see Earth again.

The Valiant 's primitive shields can do little to protect them from the Barrier though. Despite the fact that only the optical scanners can detect the Barrier, the effects it has on the crew are catastrophic.

Before Tarasco orders the ship to turn around, six crew are dead, one in critical condition, and the Valiant 's systems have been badly damaged. In fact, the Valiant may not be able to repair her warp drive . Left to drift, the crew begins making their repairs. Relieved in part that Assistant Engineer Agnarsson is alive, the crew continues on their way.

It is only later that Agnarsson begins to manifest strange psychic powers. The Valiant 's CMO realizes that the Barrier only affected those with extrasensory perception (ESP) . Thanks to his advanced abilities, Agnarsson was able to survive and the Barrier somehow enhanced those abilities. They also caused strange personality aberrations however and Agnarsson soon begins to suspect the crew of plotting against him.

Faced with the possibility of being killed by the psychotic engineer, Captain Tarasco prepares to kill his crewman. Ordering the launch of a recorder ( later retrieved by the USS Enterprise in " Where No Man Has Gone Before " ) Tarasco and his security officers then chase Agnarsson about the ship.

After Agnarsson kills several security personnel, Tarasco realizes the awful truth. He cannot stop Agnarsson on his own so he orders the evacuation of the Valiant and prepares to destroy his ship. The resulting explosion takes Agnarsson and Tarasco with it, leaving the survivors to drift on the opposite end of the Galactic Barrier with no chance of a rescue vessel.

Background information [ ]

  • Having established most of the Stargazer crew in the novel Reunion , The Valiant revisits some of those characters, and explains how Picard takes command of the vessel (as discussed in TNG : " Tapestry "). The success of this novel would lead to the creation of the Star Trek: Stargazer series, written by Friedman, to which the paperback reprint is retroactively inserted as the first novel in the series.
  • The audiobook version was abridged by George Truett .
  • An extract from this novel appeared in Star Trek Monthly  issue 66 .
  • The Science Fiction Book Club released a special edition of the hardback in May 2000 .
  • This novel was later collected, along with Reunion , in the Signature Edition omnibus, Pantheon .

We know how Jein, Okuda et al came to think WNMHGB's Valiant appeared. But the ship was mentioned at the dawn of Trek, not long after Jefferies had designed the Enterprise itself. How do you think Jefferies imagined the ship to have appeared-or any ship from two centuries before his Enterprise design? Do you suspect he already dreamed of submarines in space? Would he have imagined such a ship to look like his ringship proposal for Enterprise? Something entirely different? I'm posting this question not so much as a call to design something - though feel free to do that if you like. Are there designs by Jefferies himself you think he'd have drawn upon, or designs by someone else you think capture that spirit and look he exemplified in his designs? In other words, what would have looked "right" to you if WNMHGB had started with a scene of Valiant itself being destroyed?

The Valiant is most likely re-usable delta shape spaceship.

Bell'Orso

You know, I rather like the Jein/Okuda take on it without the added warp nacelles, as can be seen on Doug Drexler's blog.

  • Mar 17, 2013

Nightowl1701 , I rather like your suggestion. It fits well with something I found a while back. The ship in the lower right corner: http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/wiredscience/2013/01/FAEMPIREh.gif I like the idea of building on Jefferies' ringship design, but if I were to do a ship with warp nacelles I think something along these lines could work as well. Sort of similar to what you are suggesting.

I always thought that it would be some off-shoot or cousin in design to the SS Conestoga. My thoughts would be that it would be cylindrical in design with old impulse engines and a pair of nacelles of a similar or earlier era.

Warped9

  • Mar 18, 2013

As you know, I really like your design, Warped. It is pure retro. I'm not sure if Jefferies would have gone with the chrome look (I'm sure it would have been the devil to film). But it conveys the pre-1960s point very well.

Potemkin_Prod

Personally, I always saw the saucer design (a la Forbidden Planet) as the basis of most Federation ships. But I love the design, Warped9. Just don't think of that as the Valiant.

  • Mar 19, 2013

Well it was an off-the-cuff effort as I played with around with Photoshop. But it certainly isn't definitive. That said it is a general concept I like. If I were to start again I'd probably use something like the Spaceship Friede from 1929's Woman In The Moon as a starting point.

I think it's a fine design, but I think it would be more suited for space opera like Space Probe Taurus (which I enjoy from time to time on TCM): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059743/

The thing is that such a shape isn't alien to TOS. Recall Kara's ship in "Spock's Brain" which was something of a rocketship concept in form.

Quite true.

Wingsley

  • Mar 22, 2013
Wingsley said: My basis for a Valiant ring-ship is that the rings are not part of the propulsion system. Faster-than-light propulsion is accomplished by nacelles, similar in design to those of Cochrane's Phoenix, but larger. These nacelles are mounted outboard on the rings. These are not the only pods mounted on the rings. There are other, removable, interchangeable "mission pods" that can also be mounted on these rings. Think of this pod-mounting system as being vaguely similar to Franz Joseph Schnaubelt's container-pods being mounted under a Ptolemy-class warptug. (Only these mission pods are much smaller.) It is possible that some specially-designed mission pods serve as detachable short-range spacecraft that can make planetfall if necessary, like a big, early shuttlepod.) Much of the design philosophy of later-generation Earth and Federation starships is based on starship classes, with different classes presumably designed or sized for different tasks. The Valiant, being a first-generation FTL starship, reflects a more generic, utilitarian design ethos. It is a "star ship class" vessel. That is to say, there are no cruisers or tugs or science vessels or hospital ships. This is all Earth of the late 21st century could muster; a general-purpose modular FTL spacecraft that could swap out ring pods for mission-specific applications. (Not unlike the Eagles of SPACE: 1999) The ring design facilitated this pod-swapping feature, making these early starships easier to adapt to mission-specific applications and also to swap out components for maintenance and repairs. (If a mission pod is worn out, it can be removed and recycled; if a pod is jettisoned or otherwise destroyed, is can be replaced, etc.) Even the central "nose cone" structure would be modular, with a forward "command module" and also a mid-section "service module" and an aft "engineering module"; all of which can be removed, serviced and replaced. Click to expand...

Jefferies appeared to consider the rings to be the warp drive. There is no other apparent drive on his various ringship designs. Also, it fits with modern conceptions of a hypothetical "Alcubiere" warp drive requiring a negative energy induction ring. Finally, we are told a nacelle is filled with multiple ring-like "warp coils". It would make sense that an early warp drive might consist of only one or two of those coils.

While I have nothing against the concept of an "Earth ringship" with the ring actually being a warp engine ( Warped 9 's concept is really amazing), my take on the ringship concept is quite different. In my concept, the ship's warp engines are nacelle-based, directly related to Cochrane's Phoenix. The ring structure isn't an engine at all, but rather a framework to attach mission modules and engines to a multi-purpose spacecraft.

Mysterion

Vice Admiral

I've got to agree with Aridas on this one. In the illustrations I've seen of the "ringship enterprise", I've always had the sense that the ring was the warp/propulsion source for the craft, and the pod at the axist of the ring was the crew/payload module. The ring is away from the crew area in the same way that the nacelles are on later starfleet vessels.

This and the other thread has gotten me thinking...and sketching. And so I think I'm going to tackle a more serious effort to design this. My sources: TOS, TAS and TMP sources as well as period (1920s to 1970s) speculation of future spacecraft both real world and fictional. The key for me is trying to put my mindset back into the thinking of that era. The only concrete onscreen visual clues we have are the DY-100 class ships of Trek's 1990s and the ringship seen in TMP from approximately Trek's late 21st to early 22nd century. What we know is that sleeper ships were used for interplanetary travel (within the solar system) until 2018 when some sort of advanced propulsion became available and that most likely wasn't FTL. We know Zefram Cochrane developed a form of space warp sometime around Trek's mid 21st century. What we don't know---and it's rather irrelevant---is what kind of mission the Valiant was on, how long it was operational and how long it was contact with Earth, and finally how and when it ended up at the galaxy's edge. We do know the ship was classified as a "galactic survey cruiser." That does suggest extended range exploration, at least within limits of the era. Now on to the drawing board... Hmm...should I start a thread?

Was there actually some marking on the Valiant's recorder-marker that said "galactic survey cruiser"? I don't remember that.

Overview [ ]

The Valiant -class is a small, fast, high-powered, heavily-armoured limited-role Starfleet gunship. It is classified as a Tactical Corvette . Ships of this class are specialized in interdiction and short-term tactical missions.

Onboard tactical systems [ ]

Valiant -class Tactical Corvettes were typically assigned to protect deep space stations or command ships of Starfleet. This type of ship boasts of two Type-XII pulse phaser cannon assemblies, which has a much higher combat yield compared to standard phasers. It also has a total of three torpedo launchers, 2 fore and 1 aft. These torpedo launchers allowed the ship to fire both quantum torpedoes and photon torpedoes .

The shield system of the Valiant -class is equal to that of the larger Defiant -class Tactical Frigates and is therefore among the most powerful found on any Starfleet ship. It is outfitted with regenerative, multiphasic, and metaphasic shield systems, and secondary shields. The design was modified just prior to installation in order to have regenerative features and to increase effectiveness against both high energy tractor beams and phased anti-muon (polaron) particles, measures clearly aimed at the Borg and Dominion respectively.

Under normal operation, the shield modulation frequencies are controlled by the ship's computer system, which continually evaluates incoming weapons fire and automatically re-modulates the shields to provide the most effective possible defense. It is thought that this system can also prevent beam-through by Borg transporter technology.

The Valiant -class boasts of a hull that is made of overlapping and regenerative ablative hull armor that allows it to take many direct hits from enemy fire even with minimal shields. In addition, the class has been equipped with two separate armor generators that can deploy a thick layer made of ablative armor plating along the contours of the entire ship when activated. This can be done through the numerous armor plating emitters that are installed at different points on the ship's hulls. This coating covers the ship's phaser mounts, but torpedo launchers are not affected by it.

This triple redundancy feature of shields and armor on the Valiant -class allows it to effectively counter Borg and Dominion firepower. However, due to the huge energy needed to deploy both the shields and the generated armor coating at the same time, the Valiant can only use these simultaneously for a maximum of one hour. As a result, the shields and the generated armor coating are used alternately when the ship is in battle.

Command and senior Staff [ ]

Valiant -class starships have Commanding Officers that have the rank of Lieutenant Commander , while First Officers have the rank of Lieutenant junior grade .

Propulsion systems [ ]

Ships of this class are capable of cruising speeds of Warp 8.5, and sustained maximum speeds of Warp 9.5. Equipped with the enhanced warp drive of the Khronnians , Valiant –class Tactical Corvettes assigned to Vanguard Command can now attain and sustain a maximum cruise speed of Warp 9.5.

The impulse drive system of the Valiant -class is the most sophisticated model in production. Its oversized impulse engines are equipped with impulse thrusters that provide superb sub-light maneuvering speed, especially considering her size. With this design, along with the new retro-thrusters, and uprated structural integrity fields give the ship maneuverability equal to the size of a Valkyrie -class advanced tactical flyer.

Emergency holographic complement [ ]

This class is equipped with holo-emitters on every deck to allow emergency holographic programs a higher level of access and free movement around the ship. The ship’s computer systems can simultaneously bring online 1 Emergency Multi-Purpose Hologram (EMPH).

Science features [ ]

In its limited role as a reconnaissance starship, the Valiant -class was equipped with one compact and scaled down astrometrics lab .

Medical facilities [ ]

The sickbay of the Valiant -class only contains two biobeds and was not equipped with full surgical facilities.

Crew facilities [ ]

Due to the militaristic nature of the Valiant -class starship, the interior design was the most spartan in Starfleet.

Accommodations [ ]

With emphasis towards the tactical systems being the foremost priority in the vessel designers' minds, quarters aboard Valiant-class vessels for its 12-man crew were as austere as those on the Defiant -class . Except for the command officer’s quarters, standard crew quarters had two stacking bunks fitted into the walls of each cabin. Each cabin was equipped with one replicator port, a two-man dining bar cum work area, and one standard computer terminal.

Mess lounge [ ]

The only place for informal gathering was the mess deck. Like all the equipment and materials aboard the ship, the mess deck was compact and functional, which doubled as a makeshift meeting area.

Holodecks & other facilities [ ]

There are no holodecks or holosuites onboard a Valiant -class

Vanguard Command [ ]

Officially, there are 63 Valiant -class Tactical Corvettes assigned to Vanguard Command serving as tactical escort vessels, at 9 per sub-command. In the Abraxis Command in the Gamma Quadrant , two serve the Katana -class Command Battleship USS Dauntless and support the Defiant -class Tactical Frigate USS Lionheart . Five serve the Alexandria II class space station Deep Space Gamma Zero-One . Another two serve Abraxis Base . Unofficially, a tenth Tactical Corvette, the USS Switchblade , is hidden in a secret mountain base on the planet Abraxis IV . Only Admiral Gibran knows about this. It is the admiral’s emergency starship, programmed to come online when Rogue Protocols are activated and manned by 6 special emergency holographic programs who follow only his commands.

  7. 'Valiant' Was Star Trek: Deep Space Nine At Its Darkest

After a violent skirmish with the Jem'Hadar, they're beamed aboard the U.S.S. Valiant, a Defiant -class ship used to train elite cadets. The cadets are all that's left of its crew; their captain and the rest of the adult officers were killed in a Cardassian encounter that severely weakened their warp capabilities.

  8. SS Valiant timeline : r/startrek

This discussion might be better served by r/DaystromInstitute, but the SS Valiant is in the unenviable position of being an very old piece of background Trek lore that was never "synced up" when more of First Contact-era Earth history was developed. I personally assume the Valiant was warp-capable; after all, the Friendship 1 probe from VOY was warp-capable, and it was built and launched just ...

  11. DS9 Wasn't Supposed To Have A Ship But It Got 3 Defiants

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's executive producer Ira Steven Behr fought to get a starship, and Paramount and Rick Berman ultimately relented, with the caveat that DS9's ship would have to be smaller than the USS Enterprise or Star Trek: Voyager's ship. Behr also had to change the name he originally wanted, the USS Valiant, because the studio ...

  15. Valiant (episode)

  16. What happened to the Valiant....

It's meant to be a pre TOS era cruiser, one of Starfleet's earliest ships. I've even wondered if this ship could be similar to the Republic mentioned in "Courtmartial" as well the Valiant mentioned in "A Taste Of Armageddon," having gone missing without a word fifty years ago in the vicinity of the Eminian star system.

  17. Valiant class

A new prototype Valiant entered service in the time of the Federation-Klingon War of 2405-2410. The design was an evolution of the 2370s -era Defiant. 18. Star Trek: What Happened To All 4 Starships Named Defiant

In the final episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Captain Sisko received a brand new Defiant -class starship, the USS Sao Paulo (NCC-75633). 19. What did you think "Valiant"? : r/startrek

The crew of the Valiant are all whiny brats. I understand that that's the point of the episode, but it doesn't make it very enjoyable to watch regardless. The idea of taking a group of cadets and give them the command of a top notch battleship even for training is ridicilous. So I never liked that episode.

  23. S.S. Valiant Appearance

Hmm. Maybe something like this, from a 1963 Douglas ad about a possible Mars spaceship: At this early point (if I'm Jefferies), I still don't know how far in the future Star Trek is, but I've gotta figure the Valiant is much closer to our time than it is to Kirk's. The only clue I get on the ship's appearance is a reference to "old impulse engines," yet clearly some kind of FTL drive is also ...
