Tourist arrivals and overnight stays

Below is statistical data on tourist arrivals and overnight stays according to the countries from which they come. The Tourism Barometer has been attached to the interim data, as it contains key information on tourists in Slovenia. The source of the data from the collection below is the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia.

The Year 2023

In 2023, slovenia recovered faster than the european and world average.

According to the lates data from the UN Tourism, international arrivals at the global level in 2023 were still behind 2019 (the year before the pandemic) by 12 percent, and in Europe by 6 percent. Slovenia therefore recovered faster than the European and world average. The Middle East recorded even 22 percent more international arrivals than in 2019. According to the UN Tourism, global tourism should achieve full recovery this year.

A remarkable annual performance

The year 2023 was the most successful year for Slovenian tourism so far. We recorded 16.13 million overnight stays, which is 2 percent more than in 2019 and 3.5 percent more than in 2022. We realized 6.19 million arrivals, which is almost 6 percent rise compared to 2022 and only 0.6 percent drop compared to 2019. At the same time, we kept the average length of stay at the level of 2019, despite the trend of shorter breaks during the year.

Strong growth in arrivals - the structure of overnight stays in 2023 equalized with 2019

Despite facing challenges, such as floods during the peak season, and the unfavorable global factors, we exceeded the number of overnight stays by foreign guests by almost 2 %, and the number of overnight stays by domestic guests by almost 4 % compared to 2019. Compared to 2022, foreign tourists made 15 % more overnight stays, while domestic tourists made 17 % fewer. The ratio of overnight stays by domestic and foreign guests has thus normalised and returned to pre-pandemic levels.

Strong growth in arrivals from the German and Visegrad markets

Germany, Italy and Austria remain the most crucial foreign markets, followed by the Czech, Dutch, Croatian, Hungarian, French, Polish and UK markets.

Overnight stays by German tourists increased by 24.4 % compared to 2019. Markets in the Visegrad Group, including the Czech Republic (+28.8 %), Hungary (+14.1 %), Poland (+31.4 %), and Slovakia (+36.5 %), showed significant growth. The Netherlands (+9.9 %), Belgium (+7.1 %), France (+28.9 %) and Croatia (+15.5 %) also saw positive trends. However, tourists from Italy (-15.6 %), the United Kingdom (-13.6 %), and Austria (-3.3 %t) are returning more slowly post-pandemic. Multi-year trends in these markets indicate a gradual recovery.

Slovenians go to medical spas, foreign tourists discover mountain municipalities

Domestic tourists spent the most overnight stays in spas (39 %) and seaside municipalities (27 %), while foreign tourists stayed in mountain municipalities (35 %) and Ljubljana (19 %). All types of municipalities are booming, except medical spas, which are facing a decline in Russian guests.

The growth rates of overnight stays compared to the year before the pandemic reveal a revival in most municipalities. Radovljica recorded the highest growth among the TOP 15 municipalities in terms of overnight stays (+40%), followed by Koper and Maribor (+23% and +17%) and Bovec and Bohinj (+15% and +14%).

Slovenia's tourism figures hit all-time high in 2023

  • Government Communication Office

slovenia tourism statistics

"2023 was the most successful year in terms of tourism, with 2% more overnight stays than in 2019, the previous record year for tourism," the Statistics Office said in releasing the figures on 25 January.

Compared to 2022, visitor numbers were up by 5.5% to 6.19 million and the nights they spent rose by 3.5% to 16.13 million. Foreign tourists accounted for 72% of all overnight stays.

Most visitors from Germany

Local tourists spent 17% fewer nights than the year before, and foreign visitors spent 15% more. Compared to 2019, the figures are up for both Slovenian and foreign visitors, by 4% and 2%, respectively.

Most foreign visitors came from Germany. They spent 1.9 million nights accounting for 16% of all spent by foreigners.

Other major source markets for Slovenian tourism were Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Croatia.

Compared with 2022, 27% more Croatian tourists, 18% more Italian tourists, 16% more Czech tourists and 11% more Austrian tourists were recorded.

Mountains and capital top destinations

Mountain municipalities and the capital were the most popular destinations. Ljubljana saw the highest annual increase in the number of visitors (20%).

Urban municipalities in general recorded an increase of almost 14%, and mountain municipalities also recorded a rise, but the number of visitors decreased in spa and coastal towns.

All types of municipalities except those outside the largest towns and in coastal municipalities saw an increase in nights spent at accommodation facilities. The most were recorded in mountain municipalities.

Tourists mostly stayed in hotels, but the largest year-on-year increase was recorded at private rooms, apartments and houses, followed by hotels and apartment complexes.

Strong growth in December

In December tourist accommodation facilities reported 329,000 arrivals and 795,000 nights spent, an increase of 10.6% and 8.7% on the same month in 2022.

Foreign tourists accounted for 216,000 arrivals and almost 493,000 nights in what is a 14% year-on-year increase. Thirty percent of those nights were spent in Ljubljana.

Tourism shows resilience

The record figures were hailed by Minister of the Economy, Tourism and Sport Matjaž Han and the Slovenian Tourist Board (STO) with Han noting they were attained despite floods hitting the country in peak season.

This shows the tourism industry's resilience, he said, pointing to a major investment cycle to upgrade tourism facilities, including mountain resorts, over the past two years.

STO head Maja Pak Olaj said Slovenian tourism recovered faster than the European and global tourism last year. The STO expects a slight growth this year as well.

The STO highlighted the record number of American tourists last year. Their arrivals exceeded those of 2022 by 31%.

Slovenia Tourist Arrivals in Slovenia: 2021 Compared to 2020 + 31%

slovenia tourism statistics

Tourist arrivals in Slovenia increased by 31% in 2021 to reach just over four million, while overnight stays were up by 22% to 11.3 million, show data released by the Statistics Office on Tuesday. Both figures are still far behind the records of 2019, when Slovenia reported 6.2 million arrivals and 15.8 million overnight stays. Domestic tourists accounted for 2.2 million arrivals last year, an annual increase of 17%, and 6.5 million overnight stays, an increase of 10% over 2020.

e-vignette

While the Slovenian tourism sector catered to more domestic guests, to a significant extent due to tourism vouchers issued to all citizens, there was a significant number of foreign tourists as well. The contribution of vouchers and government measures to help tourism was also highlighted by Economy Minister Zdravko Počivalšek.

“For the continued turnout by both domestic and foreign visitors it is important that they should know that tourism providers in Slovenia offer safe and quality services and welcome all guests with a great deal of hospitality,” commented the minister.

“Successful tourism will, by virtue of multiplier effect, contribute to higher economic growth this year and in the future,” Počivalšek was quoted as saying in a press release of the Slovenian Tourist Board. The board’s acting director Ilona Stermecki added that Slovenian citizens would be encouraged to spend holidays at home this year as well.

slovenia tourism statistics

Promotional campaigns will focus on active outdoor and sports tourism. A further focus will be on digitalisation of tourism and tapping on Slovenia’s potential for tailor-made tourism offerings. Arrivals and overnight stays of foreign tourists in 2021 stood at 1.8 million (up 51%) and 4.8 million (up 43%), respectively. Most of the foreign tourists came from Germany – just under 415,000, up 43% compared to 2020 – and they accounted for just over a million overnight stays, up 31%.

Germany was followed by Austria with 171,000 arrivals (up 20%) and 434,000 overnight stays (up 16%), and Italy with 162,000 arrivals and 354,000 overnight stays, which is roughly the same as last year. Tourists generated the most overnight stays in mountain resorts, almost 3.5 million, followed by seaside resorts and health or spa resorts with just over 2.6 million and 2.5 million, respectively.

The most popular type of accommodation were hotels, which accounted for just over 4.5 million overnight stays, followed by private accommodations with almost 2.7 million and camping sites with almost 1.8 million.
