Zambia is a dynamic and developing country. It has magnificent scenery, an extensive and improving road network, mind-blowing wildlife and a wealth of activities for visitors. A self-driving trip through Zambia presents an unforgettable adventure in one of Africa’s great unspoilt wildernesses.

Elephant herd in Zambia.

But, and it’s a big but, while a self-drive safari is a fantastic option for a adventure holiday , it’s not for the faint-hearted! It demands careful preparation and a lot of ‘kit’, especially if you’re going to be camping. But first, let’s look at why a self-drive safari is such an amazing experience.

The Benefits of a Self-Drive Safari

There are several benefits, with the major ones being freedom, flexibility and affordability. A self-drive safari offers a unique way to enjoy the wilderness. You use your own vehicle, set your own timetable and plan your own itinerary.

You see animals going about their daily lives in their natural habitats at your own pace. You can linger to explore if you feel like it, take photos, or just sit and watch and soak up the tranquillity. You have complete control over where you go, what to see, and how long to stay in an area.

Leopard in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia.

You also know you’re supporting conservation and local communities by paying entrance fees at the parks and staying at lodges and camps that provide employment for local people. It’s a great way to discover ‘hidden gems’ by venturing off the beaten track and exploring less visited areas.

And, finally, if you’re on a budget, self-drive safaris are generally significantly less expensive than guided tours.

What Makes Zambia Such a Great Self-Driving Destination?

Oh, reasons abound! Zambia is an excellent self-drive safari because:

  • It has a wealth of fantastic wildlife

Zambia is home to a stunning variety of wildlife , including the renowned Big Five – elephants, buffalos, leopards, lions and rhinos, though the latter are rare. Its diverse ecosystems of forests, thickets, woodland, savannah and wetlands, hold more than 237 mammal species and more than 700 bird species.

Hippo family spotted at Luangwa River, Zambia.

Hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, zebras, giraffes, wild dogs, hyenas and cheetahs are just some of them.

  • It has great national parks

Zambia has 20 national parks and a further 34 protected game management areas. Many of them are perfect for self-driving. These include Luangwa, Kafue, Kasanka , Lower Zambezi, Mosi-oa-Tunya and Mweru Wantipa just to mention a few.

  • It has spectacular landscapes

Zambia’s diverse and stunning landscapes include nine different ecoregions comprising woodland, savannah grasslands, flooded grasslands, and evergreen forests.

  • It offers visitors unique experiences

Zambia’s unique wildlife viewing experiences will enrich your self-drive experience immeasurably. Liuwa Plain National Park has Africa’s second Great Wildebeest Migration in November each year. Kasanka National Park’s boasts an astonishing 10-million fruit bat migration from October to December.

  • Its culture and people

Zambians are known for their warm hospitality and rich cultural heritage. Learning about local cultures in Zambia and interacting with local people will add a great dimension to your self-drive trip.

  • It has excellent remote campsites

Zambia has some of the best campsites in Africa. They’re usually situated in spectacular locations and generally have very good facilities.‍

What are Road Conditions like in Zambia?

To put it very plainly, driving in Zambia can be hazardous! Many of the roads, especially secondary ones, are in poor repair. You’ll discover road and traffic conditions that are very different from what you’re used to. You’ll often need to navigate rough terrain and deal with challenging road conditions.

Driving through a river on a self-drive safari in Zambia.

Many of the roads don’t have sidewalks or shoulders. In practical terms this means that pedestrians, vehicles and livestock use the same road. At night this poses great dangers as streetlights are in short supply. In fact, don’t drive at night if you can avoid it.

Self-drive safari in Kasanka National Park, Zambia.

Due to poor visibility, drivers often drive on high beams and frequently fail to dim their lights. Speed limits of 30 mph/50 kmph in Lusaka and 60 mph/100 kmph outside city limits pertain, but they’re rarely respected and speeding is common.

Why It’s Not Recommended for Beginners

The challenges for beginners are the driving conditions and the extremely long distances. Negotiating Zambia’s challenging terrain requires an excellent level of skill, experience and confidence behind the wheel.

Dirt road in Zambia.

Also, unless you’re an experienced self-driver, you may find all the complex forward planning and unpredictable circumstances of a Zambian self-drive safari daunting. The latter could include mechanical issues and problems with navigation.

Domestic animals like dogs, chickens, cattle and horses, and wild animals like antelope and elephants, often wander onto the roads.

Best Places for a Self-Drive Safari in Zambia

Self-drivers in Zambia have a wealth of choices as regards destinations, and Zambia Tourism has some valuable pointers about the different routes and options. Here are a few of the game parks you can visit:

  • South Luangwa National Park

Known as one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, self-driving is a superb way of seeing the park’s wildlife. This includes elephants, hippos, Cape buffalos, lions, crocodiles, eland, kudu, hyenas and leopard, to mention but a few. Unique to this area are Thornicroft giraffes, Crawshay zebras and Cookson wildebeest.

  • Kafue National Park

This is the largest national park in Zambia. Its diverse wildlife include lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos, zebras, and a rich variety of birds. The park’s Busanga Plains are famous for  impressive lion prides and cheetahs. You might even spot a rare yellow-backed or blue duiker.

  • Lower Zambezi National Park

Situated along the Zambezi River, this park has a diverse ecosystem that attracts many animals. You could also enjoy a canoeing safari or some fishing. Elephants, buffalos, hippos, and crocodiles thrive here.

  • North Luangwa National Park

Less visited than its southern counterpart, this park is renowned for its large herds of buffalo, elephants and antelope. Predators like lions, leopards, and hyenas are often seen.

  • Liuwa Plain National Park

Liuwe boasts the second biggest wildebeest migration in Africa. So if you’re interested in seeing multitudes of blue wildebeest, zebras, tsessebe, and red lechwe, this park is well worth a visit.

When Should I Do My Self-Drive Safari in Zambia?

The best time is during the dry season from May to October. This is Zambia’s peak tourism season. The wet season, from November to April, is the country’s off-season for tourism, and for a very good reason – road conditions can be horrendous with flooding and deep mud being common ‘attractions’!

Elephants in the Zambezi River, Zambia.

So, the end of June to end of October is the optimum period for a self-drive safari in Zambia. Driving is easier, and it’s better for wildlife viewing because the vegetation is less dense. The animals also tend to congregate conveniently around water holes.

Lion roaming in Zambia.

So, though it’s possible to do a self-drive safari during the rainy season, it really isn’t recommended. During this period 4×4 vehicles are an absolute must, as is carrying recovery equipment on your vehicle. Driving in convoy is also safer at this time.

‍Some General Points to Bear in Mind about a Self-Drive Safari in Zambia

  • Give yourself sufficient time

Zambia is a big country! You need at least three weeks to do the country justice and to see a goodly portion of what it has to offer. Also allow yourself time for overnight stops as you travel between destinations.

  • You have to see Victoria Falls

Nobody should visit Zambia without seeing Victoria Falls . It’s a breathtaking experience, and the range of activities on offer is mind-blowing. These range from heart-stopping adventures for thrill-seekers to leisurely river cruises and sumptuous dining experiences.

  • Make sure you have a robust vehicle for your self-drive

It’s crucial that you have a sturdy, well-maintained vehicle for your self-drive, preferably a reliable 4×4.

  • Familiarise yourself thoroughly with the Zambian Highway Code

This is particularly important as regards the rules dealing with encounters with animals and pedestrians. There are several useful guides available online that contain important information for visitors like this one by the International Drivers Association .

  • Make sure you’re properly equipped

This is particularly important if you’ll be camping, or if you’re going to be travelling through very rough terrain. It’s mandatory if you’re travelling during the wet season when you’re sure to need recovery gear and spares. There are numerous guides and lists available, so get yourself well-informed and well-equipped.

Aerial view of famous Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Discover Africa offers some excellent Zambia travel advice and suggestions.

  • Make sure all your documentation is in order

It’s vital your personal travel documents and the documentation for your vehicle and trailer (if applicable) are in order. Zambia Tourism is a great resource about this vital aspect of your trip.

  • Make sure your vaccinations and inoculations are up to date .

You won’t be allowed into Zambia without these vaccinations . The most common vaccinations required are for measles, tetanus, diphtheria, MMR (mumps and rubella), typhoid, polio, and hepatitis A. A rabies vaccination is also recommended, as is preventative treatment for malaria, so consult your doctor well in advance of your trip.

Cheetahs cross the plains in Liuwa National Park, Zambia.

A self-drive safari in Zambia really could be the adventure of a lifetime! If you want to incorporate some luxury into your self-drive safari, Zambia has a wide range of luxury safari lodges and tented camps where you can break your trip in style!

They offer visitors superb amenities, service, cuisine and activities. A stay at these great accommodation options could really be the cherry on top of your Zambian self-drive adventure!

Ben Nelson reflects on his first self-drive safari in Zambia

I've been fortunate enough to self-drive all over Africa; an ongoing mission which will never be complete. I find it hard to believe that I've been doing it for over 10-years - the time has flown by.

I learn so much every time I reach a new destination - whether it be a region or a country - and from there, my interest in that destination explodes; I become transfixed. I believe self-driving has this effect; you become the explorer and your connection with that country becomes something much more profound.

I'm not against flying into lodges; I quite like this too, and we can arrange this for you. However, I think it's fair to say that you can't fly into two lodges and say you've seen a country. I digress, what did I think of my Zambia Self-Drive? ‍

What did I expect?

I knew that Zambia was home to some of Africa's best and lesser travelled National Parks; South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi most notably. These excited me. In South Luangwa I was due to stay at some new remote campsites that we had heard of, and visit a selection of Robin Pope  and  Norman Carr camps. I couldn't wait.

Robin Pope and Norman Carr are companies respectfully named after their founders, who pioneered the safari experience in this region and reimagined the walking safari. They are safari heroes in this part of the world.

What I had been told - but didn't quite comprehend - was that you had a few long drives between the National Parks and that I would have to stay at a few properties and treat them as pitstops. No problem I thought, I would get those out of the way and enjoy the highlights. Easy.

What did I discover?

It's hard to put this in order, but ‍

1) Traversing across the country is a real pleasure and a highlight

What I loved about this is that it gives you a chance to see Zambia as it is, away from tourism. You get to drive through real villages and towns and see how the residents of Zambia live their daily lives. Children are walking to school, locals are hard at work, some locals are not at work etc. Some areas are harsh, others inspiring, some fascinating, but what it is, is real. I would choose to see these areas rather than not now, every time. ‍

self drive safari zambia

2) The remote campsites in Zambia are some of Africa's best

Wow! We use a vast network of campsites in Southern & Eastern Africa - I would challenge anyone to name more - and these sites would be in my top 10. They are located in unbelievable locations which boast incredible views, and most importantly, you have them exclusively to yourself. Just you and the African bush. They also have excellent facilities. ‍

self drive safari zambia

3) Robin Pope Safaris and Norman Carr are excellent operators

They live up to their reputation. The walking activities on offer are top-level, and their guides are some of the best I've experienced in Africa. Everything is so creative and well done here, and the camps themselves - in terms of design - are fantastic; they blend right into the natural environment.

self drive safari zambia

‍ 4) Chongwe in Lower Zambezi is a must

It's easy to name fantastic luxury lodges, Africa is full of them. However there are a few that stick out and Chongwe is one of them.

self drive safari zambia

5) It rivals any destination as a wildlife haven

The wildlife viewing here is fantastic. You will see everything. South Luangwa is particular good and is also known as the home of the leopard.

self drive safari zambia

6) Kafue, North Luangwa and Kasanka are all worthy inclusions in your itinerary

‍ All unique and only by travelling all of them are you having the complete Zambian safari. North Luangwa pictured below.

self drive safari zambia

7) Don't forget the Victoria Falls

The Victoria Falls warrants it's position as one of the worlds natural wonders. The volume of water crashing over the side is astonishing (at the right time of year); earning them the nickname 'Mosi-oa-Tunya', which means 'The Smoke that Thunders'. If you haven't seen them, you really should.

self drive safari zambia

Where do I start and finish my trip?

We have some fantastic itinerary suggestions. They are all a little different and can start and finish in various combinations of Victoria Falls, Lusaka and Lilongwe (in Malawi).

It's hard to say which combo is best. I'm a big fan of Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River, so would probably opt to start in Livingstone. I also really like finishing in Malawi on the shores of Lake Malawi or on my favourite island; Mumbo (pictured below), so perhaps I would finish here. This is probably the perfect route if time and budget allow.

Should you be pushed for time, Lusaka allows you to shave a few days off your itinerary, which is sometimes logical. Flights into Lusaka might also suit some people better.

Whatever you choose will be good.

self drive safari zambia

‍ When would I recommend travelling?

High Season - beginning of July to the end of October. Zambia is a very seasonal country and road conditions change quickly when it rains so I would ensure the conditions are perfect.

Be sure to give yourself time

My advice, if you go, give yourself enough time. It's a big country and you would need at least three weeks to see a good portion of what's on offer. I would also implore you to stay in both the exclusive campsites and the lodges mentioned above; it makes an incredibly balanced and rewarding trip.

The below are high-season from prices. Tailor-made itineraries available.

We as a family travelled through several East African countries with a very intense itinerary. We were very happy and delighted to have Self Drive Uganda both to organize a driver and a car for Kenia and Tanzania but even more to enjoy their services in Rwanda and Uganda. Everything was perfectly organized (thanks a lot to Rachael who was patient enough to answer all our questions ahead of the trip) with drivers who all met a high standard of quality. For Rwanda and Uganda our driverguide was Moses - both a great driver and an outstanding, friendly and caring personality (ask for him to drive you - you wil not regret it !).

Zambia Self-drive Safari Tour

A self-drive road trip through Zambia is a fantastic way of experiencing the essence of Zambia. With many significant national parks such as Kafue, South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi and Liuwa Plains, there is something for everyone. Experiencing the phenomenal Wildebeest Migration in Liuwa Plains (the second largest migration of these animals) and feeling the spray of the mighty Victoria Falls are simply exhilarating. Zambia is very well known as arguably the best place in Africa to fish for Africa's iconic game fish - the Tigerfish. It is also a birders dream with hundreds of birds to be found in the different parks, a highlight no doubt being the African Shoebill - a prehistoric looking stork. Self Drive Safari in Zambia

When most people think of Zambia they think of Victoria Falls and don’t realise there is so much more to see and do on a self drive safari. Zambia is a large country and although the road network has improved over the past few years allow plenty of time and overnight stops between main attractions.

Towns like the capital Lusaka and Livingstone were once dusty shabby towns, with a few mediocre hotels, badly dilapidated roads, no street lighting and no supermarkets have now been transformed into modern cities with brand new super highways, an influx of international hotels, remarkable restaurants and a flood of South African chain supermarkets and speciality stores.

But we are not here to talk about the great infrastructure, although it is important to know you can get pretty much anything in the large towns and cities.

Zambia is a dynamic country with magnificent scenery, ever improving road network, unbelievable wildlife and offers a range of activities.

It is well worth taking some time from your self drive safari and climbing aboard a helicopter to view Victoria Falls from the heights

Victoria Falls is the draw card and you cannot visit Zambia without seeing the Falls in Livingstone. Livingstone has benefited from Zimbabwe’s demise with most tourists now viewing the Falls from the Zambian side rather than the Zimbabwean side. The increase in tourism has seen Livingstone flourish with a broad range of hotels and campsites covering all budgets, an incredible range of activities from traditional village tours, sunset cruises, walking with lions, rhino trekking and canoeing to the more adventurous adrenalin activities of bungy jumping, microlighting, white water rafting and jet boating.

Although Livingstone has developed it has not lost its historical town charm with 19th century architecture still very much predominant. The well thought through and planned museum gives an in depth insight into Zambia’s history from the original tribes through independence and modern development. There is a room dedicated to David Livingstone with original diary entries on display along with a number of original artefacts.

Lake Kariba is Africa’s largest man made dam a whopping 226km long and up to 40km wide it is a haven for those after a few days of relaxation or for the budding sport fisherman. Every year in May Lake Kariba hosts the Tiger Fishing Competition attracting anglers from all over the world in pursuit of this elusive fierce fighting fish. A popular activity to do on Lake Kariba is hire a houseboat for a few days and set sail enjoying the peace, calm and unbelievable sunsets; a magical activity for the weary self driver wanting to recharge the batteries.

Kafue National Park is Zambia’s oldest national park and the biggest in all of Africa, home to over 55 species of mammals it is a wild park with few graded tracks. Allow yourself plenty of time to get there as the 200km from Lusaka is on rough broken tar and dirt tracks. Once you arrive at the park there is an array of activities from game driving to boat safaris on the Kafue River, ballooning, walking safaris and canoeing however try to avoid the months between November and April during the wet season when tracks in the park become impassable.

This hippo looked very comfortable and content in South Luangwa National Park in Zambia

South Luangwa National Park is one of our favourite parks and we never miss the opportunity to visit whenever we are in Zambia on a guided self drive safari. It claims to be the best park in Zambia and one of the best in Africa and we have to agree! The scenery is nothing short of stunning and the variety of animals never disappoints. If leopard is on your wish list then this is probably the best park to spot one or two. Only a couple of years ago this park was difficult to access on a self drive safari however a new road has been built from Chipata to Mfuwe reducing the travel time from up to 8 hours to less than 2 hours.

Zambia is a tremendous country for a self drive safari particularly for camping trips however as you are so close to Malawi it would be a pity to travel all the way to the African continent and limit yourself to only one country.

We travel through Zambia visiting Livingstone and South Luangwa National Park on a number of our multi country guided self drive safaris and expeditions including Dr Livingstone , Africa Overland Adventure , Africa Discovered and Cairo to Cape . If you have the time, as little as 4 weeks you can enjoy the best of Zambia but also experience the splendour of Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya on our Dr Livingstone trip.

You won’t be disappointed taking a bit of extra time for a dream holiday to Africa especially when you experience the great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara National Rerserve in Kenya, wake up in the morning to incredible views of Mt Kilimanjaro from Amboseli National Park, explore the historic town of Stone Town on Zanzibar, drive along the shores of Lake Malawi stopping to watch skilled craftsman carve the most intricate designs on furniture in addition to discovering the best of Zambia.

Here is our blog entry from a trip just before the road to South Luangwa was rebuilt.

Impossible Roads South Luangwa National Park is Zambia’s number 2 tourist attraction; second only to the mighty Victoria Falls however the road to access the park is the worst road we travel on through Southern Africa. Large holes, heavy corrugations, narrow boggy strips, sharp rocks and deep ravines cut through heavy tropical rain for approximately 40kms. We had been told in Lilongwe the road was impassable before meeting a Dutch couple who had just come from the park telling us it is bad but they managed to get through. So the next morning we left Lilongwe at 7am ready to cross into Zambia and tackle the road; the plan was simple – see how we go… The first 50kms we pretty good; the Chinese had built a new dirt road and although a little corrugated in all terms was a good road. We reached the turn-off to South Luangwa and the road slowly deteriorated, although it had been visibly very wet and boggy in parts; the road had dried enough to get through without too many hiccups. We were 5kms from South Luangwa when the fun really started; 800m of deep bog holes and no way around. Peter and Linda went first, weaving their away around the holes until they had no choice but to go through – water seeping up over the bonnet with the left hand side falling into deeper holes we slowly made our way through without incident – good old Land Rovers! Hippo Steaks We enjoyed sunny days, hippos wandering through the campsite in the middle of the day; elephants playing a few hundred metres away, impala grazed in the field next door, baboons raided the camp and the vervet monkeys stole Sue and Russ’s anti-malaria tablets (he gave them back once discovered they did not taste so great!). Early morning and late afternoon game drives through the Park spotting large herds of elephant, hippo, crocs, genet, lions and lots of antelope. As we were leaving I asked Sean, the manager, if they had any hippo steaks…yes they did. So I grabbed their last 10 steaks and threw them into the fridge; a bit of a treat for the group tonight. We had to leave via the same road we entered; it had only rained a small amount the afternoon before leaving so we knew the road would be passable. Thiemo went first to test the water level and to be the first across to get the rest of us crossing on video camera. Although deep, he managed to cruise on through; Russ and Sue were next…oh dear…stuck. Great footage for the video camera!! After a bit of pulling they were through; the rest of us decided to walk the bog hole to find the best way through… Ok we chickened out but got through without incident. We drove close to 400kms that day to a few hundred kilometres from Lusaka. That night I cooked up the Hippo steaks; after a bit of a pounding and flash frying. Surprisingly, they were pretty tasty; a bit like veal… Certainly a first for Thiemo and I; although some of the group did not believe it was hippo – I can guarantee you we ate Hippo steaks for dinner! The Smoke That Thunders Mosi-oa-Tunya (smoke that thunders) is the local name for what the rest of the world knows as Victoria Falls. In 1855 David Livingstone sat awestruck by this amazing find and in his journal wrote “on sights as beautiful as this, angels in their flight must have gazed”; a perfect way to describe one of the seven natural wonders of the World. So here I am sitting in the car park only metres from the Victoria Falls while the rest of the group are enjoying a fresh spray shower straight from the Zambezi river! With museums to visit, rhino to trek, sunset cruise and micro-lighting on the menu over the coming couple of days we are in for a full on time in the historic town of Livingstone, Zambia. Livingstone truly lived up to the expectations of the group. The Victoria Falls was everything everyone imagined it would be, if not better; an afternoon/evening on a sunset cruise with alcohol included saw everyone a little “happier” than usual, rhino trekking was a hit as was the rather informative Livingstone museum. It was time to continue.

African Self-Drive Safaris & Tours

An African self-drive safari might be right up your sleeve if you're a bit of an adventurer. There’s nothing quite like exploring Africa at your own pace and in your own time. While most safari packages adhere to a pre-determined itinerary, a self-drive safari is where you get to take control. Yes, you’ll need to have your campsites and other accommodation booked well in advance, putting some limits on your freedom. But it will be up to you which route you take, how long you stay to watch those lions on a kill, and how long you stop for lunch. That freedom comes with a sense of responsibility – if somethings happens, you’re the one who’ll need to deal with it. But help is never more than a satellite phone call away and it’s a small price to pay for the sort of safari holiday that you’ll never forget.

7 Questions About Self-drive Safari Tours

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

self drive safari zambia

Why should I choose a self-drive safari?

“A self-drive safari is the ultimate in African exploration. This kind of tour has the effect of sharpening the senses – you’re a participant in Africa’s drama, not merely an observer. You’re the one who controls the speed, and who decides which fork in the road to take and how long to linger. Every time you get out of your vehicle there’s nothing between you and the wild lands you’ve come to see. It would certainly be easier to let someone else take control and make the decisions, but the self-drive journey is a remarkable experience. As a general rule, self-drive safaris tend to be cheaper than other kinds of safaris. The cost of vehicle rental is expensive, but if you are on a self-drive camping safari you will save greatly on accommodation costs.”

Which countries are most geared to self-drive safaris?

“Self-drive safaris are possible in most African countries, but South Africa, Botswana and Namibia are probably the best. South Africa usually involves a combination of a safari with other tourist attractions and therefore offers less ‘wild’ self-drive tours. On the other hand, Kruger is probably the most popular and easiest park for self-drive safaris and great for first-timers. With their long history of self-drive exploration, well-maintained roads and tracks, and very little traffic, they’re ideal for those on their first such expedition in Africa. Zambia comes not far behind, although there’s heavy traffic in some parts of the country, and some roads can be in bad condition. And provided you take back roads wherever possible there is nothing to stop you from self-driving Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Remember, however, that traffic can be heavy in all of these countries, at least on major roads.”

Do I need 4x4 experience?

“For most self-drive safaris, it is strongly recommended that you take a 4x4 course, preferably in the vehicle you will be using on your safari. South Africa is a partial exception – most parks, including Kruger, have tarred roads, although Kgalagadi is one park where gravel roads are the norm. By its very nature, a self-drive safari is a serious undertaking. Working out how to engage the vehicle’s 4x4 or re-inflating tires are things not best done with darkness fast approaching in the middle of the animal-rich Okavango Delta. Many rental companies and self-drive safari operators can arrange such day courses. The experience and confidence you will gain will serve you well out on the trail. Most operators and vehicle-rental companies provide an overview of driving when you pick up the vehicle. If you plan to stick to main roads and main safari trails through parks and reserves, you may be fine with only this information. ”

What type of vehicle can I expect?

“Most 4x4 safari vehicles have all the essential elements of hard-core expedition cars. Typical vehicles include a Land Rover Defender, Toyota Hilux or other off-road workhorse. Most will be manual, although automatic transmission vehicles are also possible. Some will be single cab (for two people), while others are dual cab (for four or, a tight squeeze, five people). Unless you’re driving from one lodge or tented camp to another, you’ll likely have a 4x4 camper. If that’s the case, your sleeping quarters will consist of a pop-top roof, or a rooftop tent that you’ll need to set up every night. In the back there will also be a fridge and/or freezer as well as a gas stove, cooking equipment and eating utensils. The better vehicles will have a portable shower, lighting, a shade awning and a mini-ladder. And, importantly, a toolkit with basic tools and essential elements such as rope, a winch, electric pump for inflating tires and other necessary items.”

What should I do when I encounter animals?

“Stay in your vehicle. Never get out of your vehicle if there are animals around. Ever. Most national parks have speed limits that rarely exceed 40km/h (25mi/h), and in many instances you’ll want to drive even slower than that. Some wild animals can be skittish and unpredictable around vehicles, so be ready to stop suddenly whenever animals are around (and even when you just suspect they might be nearby). You’ll quickly discover how close is too close. Approach slowly and watch for any signs that the animal in question may be becoming agitated. Never get between a mother and her offspring. Remember, too, that some animals such as rhinos have poor eyesight and are liable to charge if they sense (or even imagine) a threat. Don’t do anything that changes the shape of the vehicle in an animal’s eyes, such as climbing onto the roof, dangling limbs outside the car, or opening doors. It’s always better to enjoy an animal encounter from a reasonable distance than it is to scare off that animal by trying to get too close. In general, always drive with great care. Slow down to avoid accidents. Stop and admire the view. And be prepared to wait for animals to pass by, do something interesting or come down to the waterhole to drink.”

How much will this safari cost?

“The price of a vehicle alone usually begins at around US$100 per day. However, it can go above US$170 per day, sometimes significantly so, for a fully equipped 4x4 camper. Remember, however, that this is the cost per vehicle, to be shared between all of those who will be traveling in the vehicle. In addition to this per-day cost is petrol, camping fees and/or accommodation costs, satellite phone and food supplies, all of which can vary significantly from country to country. Some operators will give you a rate that includes most of these, although petrol is usually considered an additional cost. The range of self-drive safari packages is vast.”

What should I consider when choosing a self-drive trip?

“The biggest question is whether self-driving is for you. The experience of driving yourself around Africa may be exciting, but it’s not for everyone. If this is supposed to be a relaxing holiday, consider a guided safari. On a self-drive camping safari, you’ll spend quite a bit of time each day setting and packing up camp, and cooking, not to mention sleeping on what are usually thin mattresses. You also need to be realistic in what you hope to achieve, making sure that daily distances are sensible. Be sure to build in a few rest days along the way. Breaking down in the middle of nowhere without a telephone signal is a great way to ruin your trip. Make sure that you carry a satellite phone with you.”

Self drive Zambia

Self Drive Zambia

Impressive natural wonders can be found in Zambia’s national parks. Self Drive Zambia. With its sometimes less easily accessible roads, Zambia is a country for the more experienced Africa travellers. A self drive trip through Zambia is a real 4×4 overland adventure. And the best way to see all the highlights of this beautiful country.

Most travellers choose to visit Zambia between the beginning of April and the end of November. During the rainy season it’s much more difficult to travel through Zambia. Even with a 4×4 many places cannot be reached.

Car hire is available from Livingstone at Victoria Falls and from Zambia’s capital Lusaka. It is also possible to rent a 4×4 car from Lilongwe, Malawi. Car hire in Zambia is relatively expensive. If you have more time available, the advice is to start and end your tour in Johannesburg, South Africa or Kasane, Botswana.

Highlights Zambia

Extensive savannas, large lakes and lots of wildlife: that’s Zambia! This African country has a lot to offer. At the border with Zimbabwe we find two places of interest that are worth visiting, namely the Victoria Falls and the Kariba reservoir (Lake Kariba). Further to the center of Zambia you will find the main game reserves North and South Luangwa National Park as well as Kafue National Park. You will definitely find wildlife here! In the north of Zambia is the impressive Lake Tanganyika, the longest freshwater lake in the world. This lake is about 670 kilometers long and is located in four countries: Zambia, Tanzania, Burundi and Congo-Kinshasa. Anyone who likes water sports will certainly feel at home here!

Selfdrive4x4.com offers car rental to Zambia and custom made tours. Ther is also a 16-day package holiday to Zambia, South Africa and Botswana.

Contact with the company was very pleasant and they kept us posted with updates about the progress of our trip. Gps, maps, book and 12V equipment was sent to our home as soon as our trip was confirmed.

Price wise it was a great deal and everything in Namibia (car and layovers) were to our satisfaction. We would definitely book again with this company and we would recommend it to our friends.

10 Tips for Self-driving in Zambia

With its assorted landscapes and thriving wildlife, Zambia is a great African destination for self-drive escapes. Driving in this unique country comes with its challenges though, especially if it’s your first time traveling here. We’ve put together 10 crucial tips for safely navigating Zambia’s roads and making the most of your self-drive vacation.

1. Understand the Road Conditions

Zambia’s roads are a mixture of paved and unpaved roads, like most countries in Africa. Although the main highways are typically well-serviced, secondary roads and roads in rural areas sometimes feature potholes, uneven road surfaces, and loose gravel.

It’s a good approach to always drive carefully, particularly on unfamiliar roads, and to stay aware of possible abrupt changes in road conditions.

2. Choose the Right Vehicle

Depending on where you want to go, you might need a 4×4 vehicle to negotiate rough terrain, particularly in national parks and remote areas, best explored with a 4×4 hire . Make sure that your rental 4×4 is equipped with the right tires, a spare tire, and tools for changing a flat tire. You’ll also want to check your vehicle’s suspension and clearance for navigating rough terrain.

3. Follow Local Traffic Rules

In Zambia, you drive on the left hand side of the road and your vehicle’s driver seat is situated on the right hand side. Pay attention to local traffic signs, speed limits, and road markings. Always obey traffic rules and regulations and drive with your seatbelt on at all times.

4. Be Cautious of Wildlife

Zambia has plenty of wildlife and it’s common to find animals crossing the road, particularly near national parks and wildlife reserves. Should you encounter wildlife, slow down and always give the animals the right of way.

It’s a good idea to avoid driving at night when wildlife is more active and harder to see.

5. Carry Essential Documents

Make sure you’re carrying all necessary documentation such as a valid driver’s license, vehicle registration, and insurance papers. If you’re carrying a foreign driver’s license, it’d be a good idea to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) before leaving your home country. Always be prepared to display these documents at police checkpoints.

6. Plan Your Route and Fuel Stops

Always plan your route before traveling and pay close attention to the distances between towns and fuel stations.

There may not always be fuel in the more remote places, so fill up your tank whenever you get the chance and consider carrying extra fuel in a jerry can for emergencies.

7. Stay Updated on Weather Conditions

Zambia’s rainy season is from November to April and can contribute to a decline in road conditions. Check the weather and condition of the roads before heading out, especially if you’re traveling to remote areas.

Expect muddy roads and river crossings during this time of the year.

8. Respect Local Customs

It’s a Zambian custom to greet people with a smile and a handshake. If you’re passing through a village, slow down and wave. It’s a small gesture that goes a long way. Always ask for permission before taking photos and do your best to respect local customs and traditions.

9. Carry Essential Supplies

This is especially true for traveling in more remote areas. Always ensure you have enough water, snacks, a headlamp or flashlight, and a first-aid kit. Make sure your phone is charged, carry a power bank, and keep a map or GPS handy in case you can’t get a mobile signal.

10. Stay Informed and Seek Local Advice

Stay on top of local news and travel advisories. Zambians are friendly and happy to offer advice and knowledge. Speak to locals, tour operators, and park rangers about road conditions, wildlife sightings, and possible hazards, especially during the rainy season.
