sekumpul waterfall tour

Is Sekumpul Waterfall the most beautiful waterfall in Bali? Yes, I certainly think so!

Tucked away deep in the lush jungle of north Bali you’ll find Sekumpul waterfall , one of the most impressive works of nature on the island.

When arriving at the parking in Sekumpul village, you can actually hear the water roar far away and the surroundings are just so beautiful. Birds chirping, a sea of palm trees illuminated by the morning sun and colorful butterflies everywhere.

Sekumpul Waterfall stands about 80 meters tall and is actually made up of several smaller cascades. Although not the largest waterfall in Bali, it is one of the most mesmerizing waterfalls I have ever seen. So let’s take a look at how to get to Sekumpul, the best time to visit and what you can expect.

Article overview

From north Bali

From ubud or seminyak, sekumpul waterfall tour, best time to visit sekumpul waterfall, sekumpul opening hours, sekumpul waterfall entrance fee, how much time do you need at sekumpul waterfall, fiji lemukih waterfall, lemukih rice fields, scams to avoid, the walk down is tough on your knees, safety first, explore the surrounding area, what to bring to sekumpul waterfall, budget accommodation, high-value accommodation, upscale accommodation, popular bali waterfall tours, like this please help me share 😀, how to get to sekumpul waterfall.

Sekumpul is a must on any North Bali itinerary and is easily reached from towns like Lovina and Singaraja in just about an hour. Public transport in Bali is almost non-existent so you’ll either have to rent a scooter or hire a driver to take you there. Day trips from north Bali to the waterfalls usually cost somewhere between 500k and 600k.

If you drive by yourself and want to go straight to the main fall, search for Sekumpul on Google Maps and when you reach the village the parking area is easy to find. If you get lost the locals will point you in the right direction as the waterfalls are their main income.

At the entrance, there is a large banner reading “Welcome to Sekumpul”. The parking area will be on your left and from there it’s a 2/3-kilometer hike down to the main waterfall.

Even though it’s easier to get to Sekumpul Waterfall from north Bali, I’m guessing most of you will be based in either Ubud or Canggu/Seminyak. As I mentioned above we combined our visit to Sekumpul with sunrise over Pinggan Village while staying in Seminyak.

We left at 3.45 am to get there before sunrise and it was so nice to be the only ones on the road. Driving from Seminyak to Kintamani took under 2 hours while the return trip with all the traffic took more like 3-4 hours.

I definitely recommend hiring a driver so you don’t spend most of the day lost on the windy steep roads of north Bali. Trust me, driving a scooter and trying to navigate at the same time usually takes a lot longer than you’d think. We paid 1 million for a full-day tour to Sekumpul and Pinggan and I couldn’t be happier with our choice.

If you arrive later in the day and want to explore all the falls, using the Lemukih Waterfall entrance might be your best bet. The drive from south Bali is shorter and there are usually way fewer people there as it is little known.

🌟 I usually book this driver in advance >> Bali Private Car or Van Charter with Driver

If you don’t want to do any planning, I recommend this amazing tour that includes both Sekumpul and Banyumala, two of Bali’s absolute best and most beautiful waterfalls.

End the day with a visit to Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, a temple complex located on the shores of Lake Bratan in the mountains near Bedugul. One of the most iconic and recognizable landmarks in Bali. All three places are a must on any Bali Bucket List .

Sekumpul Waterfall practical info

You can visit Sekumpul all year round as there are positives and negatives with each season.

My favorite time to visit all the waterfalls in Bali, and the island in general really, is from February to April (avoiding Easter) when the two seasons overlap. This is when you get the best of both worlds!

During Bali’s rainy season from October to March, the falls are at their most powerful, but the water can sometimes be brown because of all the mud and sediment the rain carries with it. And make sure to be careful as the stairs and pathways can get quite slippery and the river you have to cross at the bottom becomes deeper this time of year.

Though not as powerful, the falls are still impressive during the dry season between May and September. It’s less humid and you’re more likely to have beautiful blue skies which make for some great photo ops. Especially in the early morning light.

But a lot of the greenery does get fried/turn brown in the warmer months so the surroundings might not appear as lush in August and September.

Sekumpul Waterfall in Bali is open from 08:00 am to 07:00 pm.

We booked a driver for a half-day tour and combined our visit to Sekumpul with sunrise over Pinggan Village. I’ll talk more about the amazing Pinggan Village in the next post but because we had to be there at sunrise and continued straight to Sekumpul, we got to the falls at 7.30 am. The lady in the ticket booth just got there, so we were able to enter a bit early.

I’m very happy we arrived when we did because we had time to enjoy the area and shoot some photos in peace before the crowds started rolling in at around 9:00 am. The climb back up all the stairs is of course also much easier in the cooler morning air.

There are three entrance fees to Sekumpul Waterfall :

  • View only – 20,000 IDR per person.
  • Medium trek – 125,000 IDR per person.
  • Long trek – 200,000 IDR per person.

I was told that all visitors to Sekumpul Waterfall now are required to hire a guide if they want to walk past the viewpoints. This is in part for the safety of visitors, but also to support the local economy and help maintain the area.

The “view only” fee is IDR 20,000 per person and allows viewing of Sekumpul waterfall only.

Medium trek

The “medium trekking” option costs IDR 125,000 per person, which includes a guide, a donation to the local village, and visiting both Sekumpul and Hidden Waterfalls.

The “long trekking” option costs IDR 200,000 per person and includes a guide, a donation to the local village, Sekumpul and Hidden Waterfalls, as well as the Fiji Lemukih waterfalls, which is a 30-minute hike away.

Bottled water is also included, but please refuse this and bring your own reusable water bottle to limit the plastic waste.

How much time you need at Sekumpul Waterfall depends on which hike you want to do and the shape you’re in:

  • View only – 1 hour
  • Medium trek – 3-4 hours
  • Long trek – 4-5 hours

Sekumpul Waterfall - The most beautiful waterfall in Bali. Book a tour guide or drive there by yourself - Here's how!

The hike down to Sekumpul waterfall

The paved path to the waterfall is easy to follow from the parking area. Although it’s steep and a bit of a workout, you will be able to do it even if you’re not in the best shape.

You’ll pass several warungs on your way down, some of which offer the most amazing views from their rooftops. So definitely stop for a cold drink before you leave. Both the food and drinks here were surprisingly cheap. I had a big plate of Mie Goreng and an iced lemon tea which only cost me 40k.

After a couple of steps, there is a small path on your left from which you get the most beautiful view of the falls. That’s where I shot the photo with me in it as you can see above. If there’s already someone occupying that spot, don’t worry, there’s another viewpoint a little further down. We were lucky enough to have both viewpoints all to ourselves as we got there before 8:00 am as I mentioned above.

Once you’re satisfied with your photos, continue to the bottom of the stairs. A narrow bridge takes you across the river and from there the path to the left continues for five minutes to the main falls and the right path leads to the additional waterfalls.

Your guide will most likely take you a short distance to Hidden Waterfall, an incredible spot where lush greenery completely covers the rock face and water flows down all around you.

Keep in mind that even though there’s a bridge you will have to get your feet wet to reach the pool at the bottom of the fall. And even more river crossings are necessary if you want to explore the other waterfalls.

The path down to Sekumpul Waterfall in Bali

There are also several other waterfalls to explore in the Sekumpul area, the main one being Fiji Lemukih about a 30-minute walk from Sekumpul. It is a bit smaller than Sekumpul, but still very impressive.

The waterfall is surrounded by lush jungle and there are several small pools at the bottom where you can take a dip. The water is crystal clear and very refreshing.

Complete the day with a visit to Lemukih Rice Fields, located just a few kilometers from Sekumpul Waterfall. This peaceful area is the perfect place to take a stroll and just enjoy the scenery of terraced rice fields and surrounding mountains.

You can also see local farmers at work, planting and harvesting rice. There are several small cafes and restaurants in the area where you can grab a bite to eat or a refreshing drink.

Sekumpul Waterfall in Bali, view of second waterfall

Things to know before visiting Sekumpul

The scams you may encounter at Sekumpul are the typical Bali scams . If you drive by yourself, remember to avoid the signs that say “Sekumpul Registration”. These do not actually lead to the waterfall, it is locals wanting to make some money off unaware tourists. Just look for the banner I talked about earlier.

During my last visit, I was also approached by a man right after the parking area who said he was a guide and that I could pay him directly for a guided tour. I said no thank you, and continued to the ticket booth closer to the waterfall.

This isn’t a scam per se, because he would probably take you to the waterfall, I’m guessing. However, it’s always safer to just go straight to the official ticket place.

I can’t say that I’m in great shape, but I was really struggling with the walk down the path and stairs to the falls. You will feel it in your thighs and knees, but it is totally worth it once you reach the bottom.

The hike back up to the parking area wasn’t a walk in the park either. Haha, I looked like a drowned rat when I finally got back. Be sure to take your time, especially in the mid-day sun.

The path and steps down to the bottom of Sekumpul waterfall get very slippery. So do the large rocks popular to climb up on to get the perfect photos. Please, don’t put yourself in danger to get the perfect shot.

On rainy days, the rivers you have to cross also get very powerful, so I recommend you check the weather forecast before you visit Sekumpual and any other waterfall in Bali.

Don’t go to north Bali to only see Sekumpul Waterfall, there are some epic viewpoints and other attractions that are definitely worth stopping by. Some of the favorite locations along the way are Strawberry Hill Lookout and the famous Handara Gates.

I also mentioned Pinggan Village and Ulun Danu Temple above, as the perfect additions to your day trip to north Bali. This is also where you’ll find many of the largest and most beautiful waterfalls, I’ll talk more about those below.

Air Terjun Sekumpul - The most beautiful waterfall in Bali. Book a tour guide or drive there by yourself - Here's how!

For the best possible experiences at Sekumpul Waterfall in Bali, it’s important to come prepared with the right gear and essentials. Here are some items that I recommend bringing with you:

  • Non-slip shoes   – The hike to the waterfall is steep and can be quite slippery in some places, so it’s important to wear shoes with good grip and support. I wore flip-flops and it was not ideal, so I suggest closed-toe shoes like sneakers or hiking boots, alternatively hiking sandals .
  • Swimsuit & lightweight towel   – You’ll definitely want to take a dip in the refreshing pool at the base of the waterfall, so don’t forget to bring your swimsuit and a towel. Even if you only plan to shoot some photos, you will get wet from the powerful waterfall.
  • Waterproof bag  – To keep your belongings dry, I suggest bringing a waterproof bag to store your camera, phone and any other valuables. I was completely soaked after our visit, even though I didn’t get in the water.
  • Waterproof & reef-safe sunscreen  – Be sure to protect your skin with sunscreen, I got very sunburned on my shoulders from walking in the valley.
  • Insect repellent  – Mosquitoes and other bugs can be a nuisance at Sekumpul Waterfall as the valley gets very humid, so bring some insect repellent to keep them away. My legs were eaten alive, even when the sun was shining.
  • Cash  – There is an entrance fee to the waterfall, and you may also want to purchase snacks or souvenirs from the vendors in the area, so bring some cash with you.
  • Reusable water bottle   – This one is my favorite. It’s important to stay hydrated, so bring a reusable water bottle to refill throughout the day. The guided tours include water, but please say no to the plastic bottles and bring your own.

My favorite filtered water bottle for travel, backpacking, hiking. LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottle.

Sekumpul Waterfall in Bali, a first timer's guide

Where to stay close to Sekumpul Waterfall

If you have the time I urge you to spend a night or two in North Bali, you’ll get a completely different experience and perspective of the island. There are accommodation options for every budget.

If you are comfortable staying in a humble room, you will absolutely love the highly-rated ESA di Kubu Homestay . This is where you will experience the true warmth and hospitality of the beautiful Balinese people, away from the hustle and bustle of the south.

Dekha, the owner, is so passionate about the environment and his village, and will happily share everything with you. He will introduce you to the locals, show you around local farms, take you on walking tours to all the waterfalls around Sekumpul and even some hidden gems.

His wife, Sunny, cooks all the meals with fresh produce from the garden and local markets. You can even get the sweetest fresh fruit straight from the trees. And the WiFi is great. I mean, does it get any better? I would not have had such a great experience in north Bali if it had not been for Sunny and Dekha.

Located just a few minutes from Sekumpul Waterfall, Rostika Villa & Camping Sekumpul is one of my favorite hotels in Bali.

They have done an incredible job of building up a complex with a pool and even a small waterfall in the middle of the mountainous jungle. The place is fresh, new and covered in pink and purple flowers. Every room comes with a balcony where you can watch the sunrise.

But what truly makes this place is the lovely staff that will do whatever it takes to make sure you have the best possible stay. They went above and beyond to accommodate our meal requests and help us with organizing transport.

If you prefer to stay somewhere a bit nicer, you should check out Munduk Kupang Villa & Resto Sekumpul . This newly built hotel boasts incredible views from the entire property and a large infinity pool.

You get your own bungalow with the most comfortable bed and pillows, which can be hard to find in Bali. The staff is also super accommodating and always smiling. One of the best places to stay in Bali .

Other waterfalls in north Bali worth visiting

While Sekumpul is my favorite waterfall in Bali, there are a lot more falls worth visiting close by. Banyumala is almost equally as beautiful and it does not receive as many visitors as Sekumpul, so be sure to check that out as well if you decide to go on a day trip. Others worth mentioning are NungNung and GitGit Waterfall.

A little further south you’ll find Tibumana and Tukad Cepung Waterfall which is located inside a cave. So definitely go chasing waterfalls in Bali.

Tukad Cepung is the only waterfall I do not recommend visiting as early as possible, you want that midday light to shine into the cave. You can read more about Tukad Cepung and the best waterfalls around Ubud here.

Sekumpul Waterfall In Bali – Visitor’s Guide (2024)

Sekumpul Waterfall is said to be the biggest and best waterfall in Bali and for a damn good reason!

There are not just one but three epic waterfalls in this valley that are a must-see during your visit to the Island of Gods.

I have put together this complete guide to Sekumpul Waterfall Bali (Air Terjun Sekumpul) including how to get there, how much it costs, the best time to visit, and what to expect when you arrive.

QUICK ANSWERS – SEKUMPUL WATERFALL BALI

Let’s start this guide with the essentials you should know about Sekumpul Waterfalls, from the location to getting there and more.

WHERE IS SEKUMPUL WATERFALL BALI?

Air Terjun Sekumpul is located in the northern region of Bali.

I recommend allowing a full day to visit these falls as it’s a 2-hour drive each way and you’ll need at least 2 hours to visit Sekumpul Waterfalls.

Click here to see the location on Google maps.

sekumpul map

HOW TO GET TO SEKUMPUL WATERFALL?

The best way to get here is by car or scooter.

You can rent a scooter online in advance and the drive takes around 2 hours one way from the main tourist areas of Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, and Ubud.

Don’t feel confident riding a scooter? Another great option for getting around Bali is to hire a private car and a driver for the day and experience all that the island has to offer.

  • Experienced Driver
  • Hotel pick-up & drop-off
  • Mineral water

The road gets very windy and steep as you head through the hills of Bedugul towards Sekumpul and it’s a common route for trucks and other commuting vehicles.

Please take care and I also highly recommend purchasing travel insurance , especially when riding on the roads in Asia. Safety first!

You can find some epic viewpoints and other attractions on the way that are definitely worth stopping for.

Sekumpul and Banyumala Waterfalls Hiking Tour Private All Inclusive

The BEST way to visit is to join a Sekumpul and Banyumala Waterfalls Hiking Tour !

It includes private transportation, all entrance fees, countless memories to make, and a fun guide.

ARRIVING AT AIR TERJUN SEKUMPUL

Before arriving at the parking lot, you’ll see a number of ‘ Registration ‘ points along the main road where there may be a group of locals that will try and stop you to pay a registration fee to visit Air Terjun Sekumpul.

This is nothing more than a scam and you can continue driving down to the parking area located here .

Updated November 2023: There are now three Sekumpul Waterfall entry fee options to choose from which are:

  • View Only – 20,000 IDR
  • Medium Trekking – 150,000 IDR
  • Long Trekking – 250,000 IDR

View Only entrance ticket is pretty self-explanatory and only allows you to view the falls from above and doesn’t include the trek down to the falls.

Medium Trekking (recommended) includes a guide and a visit to Sekumpul and Hidden Waterfall.

Long Trekking includes a guide and a visit to Sekumpul, Hidden Waterfall, and Fiji Waterfall, all of which are located in the same valley.

SEKUMPUL WATERFALL HIKE

It’s approximately a 30-minute hike to reach the base of the falls through a lush bamboo-forested valley.

About a third of the way down, you will come across an awesome viewpoint of the falls from a birds-eye perspective and you can stop here to take some photos.

From this viewpoint, you’ll have a clear view of the main set of falls that gush down a whopping total of 80 meters before it reaches the rock pool at the base of Sekumpul Waterfalls Bali.

Continue to traverse through the forest until you reach the trail at the bottom of the valley.

From here you’ll have to walk along the banks of the stream and you may have to wade through shin-high water to get to the base of the main falls.

THE MAIN FALLS

You can hear the distant roar of the main falls before you see it. As you come around the corner, you’ll be graced by the incredible beauty of Bali’s best waterfall.

Be sure to bring your swimmers with you because it’s possible to go swimming in the rock pools beneath the falls.

However, I don’t recommend getting directly beneath the falls as the force of water is very powerful and could potentially cause an injury.

There are a few dry rocks beneath the falls where you can set down your belongings if you decide to go swimming.

Taking photos of the waterfall can prove quite difficult as the misty spray emitting from the falls is wild and consistent.

Be prepared with a lens cleaner or a towel to wipe your camera lens every 5 seconds.

HIDDEN WATERFALL

Once you’ve spent some time enjoying the main falls, continue the adventure upstream for around 10 minutes to where you can find the stunning Hidden Waterfall.

My first impression of Hidden Waterfall was how it looks like a flow of white satin threaded with silver as it surges between a crack in the rock face and into a natural pool below.

It’s possible to swim right up beneath this waterfall as it’s not as powerful as the main Sekumpul Waterfalls.

FIJI WATERFALL

The third waterfall in Sekumpul valley is called Fiji Waterfall.

From Hidden Waterfall, follow the trail back downstream, passing the main waterfall, and continue along the banks to the left.

Keep on going along this trail for around 15 minutes until it eventually emerges at the incredible Fiji Waterfall.

Featuring a trio of falls, this is one of the most photogenic waterfalls in Bali.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

The best time to visit is anytime between mid-morning and 2 pm to get the best lighting from the sun through the valley.

Do bear in mind that it is a 2.5-hour ride each way so you may want to consider spending a night out in the northern region, (see below for some accommodation options).

This also gives you the option to visit more of Bali’s waterfalls such as Aling-Aling Waterfall and Banyu Wana Amerta Waterfall which are both located in the northern region of Bali.

You may or may not know that Sekumpul in the local language translates to ‘collection’ or ‘group’ meaning that there are multiple waterfalls in the same valley.

You may have noticed in this article that I have used the words ‘Air Terjun’ which is the local language and translates to ‘waterfall’.

Hey! You might want to update the price. The Northern Bali “Government” has stepped in and now they have wristbands and a gate with locals scanning the wristband before you get to the stairs. It costs 125,000 for a medium trek which includes the two big falls and a guide. It started in February 2019 and there is no way around it. Just so tourists know going in that it is not a scam (the registration banners before you get there probably are) but this is not. The village got together and decided on a price and created actual employees and guides. I don’t blame them.

Hi and thanks for the new updated info! Will amend the blog post accordingly! Take care 🙂

The ultimate guide to sekumpul waterfall in north bali, known as ‘the best waterfall in bali’ which has 7 hidden waterfalls situated in the tranquility of valley and it surrounded by the lush jungle with serenity ambiance..

Sekumpul Waterfall also known locally as Air Terjun Sekumpul, is arguably Bali’s most spectacular cascades with a collection of 7 tall, misty waterfalls in one area.

The seven waterfalls each has its own beauty, form, and height that look extraordinary and makes these waterfalls as the most gorgeous waterfall in Bali island.

sekumpul waterfall

One look at Sekumpul Waterfall and you'll think you've arrived in the Lost World. The whole place is lush and green and the falls are huge, giving a pre-historic feel to the area.

Where the air is very fresh, you can relax and escape from your busyness, of course, make you feel peaceful and all the problems lost.

So if you’re heading north of Bali and wish to visit Sekumpul Waterfall, here’s everything you need to know :

What to Expect Sekumpul Waterfall

  • Sekumpul Waterfall Address & Map Location

How to Get to Sekumpul Waterfall

Sekumpul waterfall from ubud or seminyak, sekumpul waterfall entrance fee, best time to visit sekumpul waterfall, the walk to sekumpul waterfall, sekumpul waterfall height, sekumpul waterfall hike.

As mentioned earlier Sekumpul Waterfall different from the other waterfalls in Bali. It not consist of one or two waterfalls, but seven waterfalls in one area.

There are two fallen waterfalls and the source of a waterfall covered by green trees that cover the surface of the hill. These waterfalls have a different character and source.

sekumpul waterfall

The first waterfall has a single flowing waterfall.  Such other waterfalls are often encountered and come from a mountain spring.

And the second waterfall is higher than the first waterfall, has a waterfall shape that dangles like a mosquito net and comes from the stream of a river.

The freshness of the water that fall from the 80 meters height, and the lush trees will make anyone amaze and fall in love instantly to this waterfalls.

Even so, getting down here requires a good deal of effort, with paths comprising dirt tracks, a hundred or so steps and crossings over streams, but when you reach the waterfall, it was all paid off.

Sekumpul Waterfall Address & Map Location

Sekumpul Waterfall located in the village of Sekumpul, Sawan district, Buleleng regency, in the northern region of Bali.

The village is within an hour’s drive southeast from Lovina Beach, and approximately a 2.5 to 3 hour drive from Denpasar.

Getting to Sekumpul Waterfall you should go to Sekumpul village in the northern region of Bali.

Its took 2,5 to 3 hours drive by car or scooter from Kuta area, and 18 kilometres southeast of Singaraja or 27 kilometres from central Lovina.

If you’re coming from Ubud, Seminyak or another area further away, it’s still possible to visit Sekumpul waterfall although you’ll most likely want to opt for a driver rather than taking the long bike ride! .

sekumpul waterfall

You can hire a driver + car for around $45 for the day CHECK HERE → Bali Car Rental with Driver , or you can ask your accommodation to arrange this for you.

If you like to ride scooters, you can find scooter rentals shops practically everywhere in the main tourist hubs such as Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu.

The scooters can be rented for $5 to $10 a day with a full tank of gas. This is my preferred means of travel around Bali, as it is cheap and you can stop anywhere and anytime you like!.

The road gets very windy and steep as you head through the hills of Bedugul and it is a common route for trucks and other commuting vehicles.

So please take care and don’t overtake unless you think it is safe to do so. You can find some epic viewpoints on the side of the road that are definitely worth stopping for.

Would require a long day trip with this being the only thing you would realistically have time to do.

Google Maps claims it takes two hours, but it would probably be a lot longer, especially if you are on a less than gutsy scooter!

As with most natural attractions in Bali, visit to Sekumpul Waterfall there’s an entry fee of 20,000 IDR per person, payable at a small booth in the village.

A local trekking association offers guided treks of the area with warnings that it’s at your own risk if you don’t use a guide.

It would be easy enough to reach the first falls unguided, but we found our guide helpful navigating the paths and several river crossings to the second group of falls as the trail wasn’t so obvious.

Rates quoted for a group size of up to four trekkers are 150,000 IDR for a short trek (two hours), 200,000 IDR for a medium trek (three hours), and 350,000 IDR for a long trek.

The best time to visit Sekumpul Waterfall is anytime between mid morning and 2pm to get the best lighting from the sun through the valley.

To see the falls at their most powerful, visit during Bali’s rainy season – which runs from October to April.

sekumpul waterfall

If you do visit during this time, make sure to take care on the walk down as the stairs can be wet and there may also be slippery rocks.

The falls are still impressive in the dry season between May and September too. A good compromise is to visit around April and May as the falls will still be relatively powerful but the weather will be better at this time of year.

The path to the waterfall is easy to follow from the car park. As you follow it round you’ll reach stairs that will lead you the majority of the way to the falls.

ot long after you begin going down, there will be a small path on your left from which there is a brilliant Sekumpul viewpoint.

sekumpul waterfall

From here you can really appreciate the beautiful waterfall and the its location amongst the surrounding nature.

Once you’ve taken a few pictures here, continue down the stairs. At one point you will have the option to either turn off to the left, or continue to the right.

The easier path is to continue to the right where a bridge will lead you across the river. If you go to the left you’ll have to cross the river by foot.

After crossing the bridge, turn left and from here it’s a relatively short walk to the base of the waterfall.

You will have to get your feet wet at this point, so either take off your shoes or bring appropriate footwear!

The height of Sekumpul Waterfall is around 100 meter, and this waterfall also well- known as Gerombong Waterfall.

This is not the only one waterfall that drains water. However, two waterfalls are flowing swiftly.

We can enjoy the waterfalls from a distance before we enter the waterfall area because of the height.

There are two fallen waterfalls and the source of a waterfall covered by green trees that cover the surface of the hill.

These waterfalls have a different character and source. The first waterfall has a single flowing waterfall. Such other waterfalls are often encountered and come from a mountain spring.

So during the rainy season, the first waterfalls remain in a clear state, while the second waterfall will be brown turbid.

Hidden in the dense forest of North Bali, Sekumpul waterfall is an impressive work of nature.

Sekumpul in the local language translates to ‘collection’ or ‘group’ meaning that Sekumpul Waterfall is actually one of the multiple waterfalls.

In fact, there are 5 or 6 waterfalls in the same valley. These can also be explored after you visit the main attraction of the twin falls.

sekumpul waterfall

The main falls stand 80 metres tall, surrounded by beautiful greenery that is typical of Bali. Each waterfall is within 5 – 10 minutes hiking of each other.

Although the hike down to Sekumpul Waterfall is steep and a bit of a workout, it’s manageable for travellers of all ages.

On the way down you’ll even be rewarded with a picture perfect spot at the Sekumpul viewpoint.

Before you can enjoy the waterfall up close, visitors will be invited to travel on foot after the entrance.

Passing through several concrete steps and a handle of iron. This makes the visitors feel safe to descend the hills.

When going down the stairs you can hear the sound of a thundering waterfall hitting the pond of water under it.

Once down the stairs, there is a bridge with a clear river water below it. Soft tracking shortly after passing the bridge through a small forest and then you get to the Sekumpul Waterfall .

How To Visit Sekumpul Waterfall In Bali Without A Guide

Sekumpul Waterfall is a huge twin waterfall in Singaraja Bali, with two 80 meter tall (260 foot) streams pouring out of the jungle treetops.

If you’re looking for the biggest and best waterfall in Bali, this is probably it! To top it off, while hiking to these falls you get to see some of the most scenic jungles and rice terraces on the island.

The Sekumpul Waterfall is no longer a secret, but since it’s in the far northern part of the island and pretty far from town, the crowds are still not too bad.

This Sekumpul Waterfall blog will explain how to get there, how to do the hike without a guide, what kind of entrance ticket to expect, and everything else you need to know before you go!

sekumpul waterfall tour

Sekumpul Waterfall Bali: What To Expect

The Sekumpul waterfall hike is pretty straightforward, but I’d rate it as moderate.

It’s not dangerous, but the steep hike up and down to the falls is a huge workout and it takes about 30-60 minutes to get there, depending on where you park.

Before you even start the hike, you’ll be taking dozens of pictures. The views in north Bali are incredible — steep green mountains and rice terraces in all directions!

You’re basically hiking down into a big ravine in the jungle, and the views along the way are absolutely mind blowing.

sekumpul waterfall tour

Fiji Waterfall

Near the end of the hike, you’ll reach a junction with a sign pointing to two different waterfalls.

Go right for 5 minutes if you want to see ‘Grombong Waterfall’ — the main Sekumpul waterfall shown on this page.

Then retrace your steps to the sign and walk in the other direction for 5-10 mins to reach Fiji Waterfall, a cool triple waterfall in the same canyon.

Sekumpul Waterfall Without Guide (i.e. Registration Scam)

You should be aware that there’s an annoying scam at Sekumpul Waterfall where a group of locals has set up a series of fake (but convincing) “registration” checkpoints along the road there.

If you stop at one of these, they will try to force you to hire a guide for 450k IDR ($30 USD) per person . They will tell you it’s dangerous and required, and might show you a fake entrance ticket.

Tell them you don’t need a guide, or better yet, just keep driving. This is easier to do if you’re in a car, of course.

If you drive through without stopping, it’s possible to bypass the scammers, the bogus registration, and the fake entrance ticket completely.

Next, you will need to stop in Lemukih village and hike from the south entrance there, NOT from the north entrance at Sekumpul village (which has a metal gate where they WILL stop you).

The area is a bit confusing at first, but hopefully the pictures and map below will help.

sekumpul waterfall tour

Ignore all “registration” checkpoints WITHOUT stopping, and drive until you reach this fork in the road. Take a LEFT here and you can drive down to the free parking area where no one will hassle you. (if you take a right here, you will end up in Sekumpul village)

sekumpul waterfall tour

This guy is NOT one of the scammers. He is cool. He asked to be in this pic. On the left is the last (and best) car parking area for the hike. On the right is the foot path down to the falls.

sekumpul waterfall tour

This is the REAL entry fee for Sekumpul waterfall (also includes Fiji waterfall). This ticket was sold by a one eyed gentleman at a booth halfway down the foot path.

Keep in mind this is a very poor, remote area of Bali where the locals have very few legitimate ways to make any money.

Think about things a little bit from their perspective, and then make your own decision about whether or not to use the ‘mandatory’ local guide.

I’m sure the guides are helpful for taking your photos and such, but the path is pretty safe and easy to follow without a guide. It’s definitely not necessary for most people.

If the price was reasonable, I might be inclined to pay it just to help out the locals. But being forced to pay $30 per person for a short hike is not reasonable in my book.

Sekumpul Waterfall Entrance Fee / Ticket

As of 2020, the legitimate entrance fee for Sekumpul Waterfall is only 15k IDR (~$1 USD).

sekumpul waterfall tour

How To Get To Sekumpul Waterfall

Sekumpul Waterfall is located in North Bali, about 2.5 hours drive from Ubud or 1 hour from Singaraja.

The best way to get there is to rent a scooter or hire a private car and driver (both of these can be booked online).

You can use the map below to take you to the Sekumpul Waterfall location in Bali, or just route your map directly to Warung Fiji (click for GPS). This little warung is the southern starting point for the hike.

Scooters can go all the way to Warung Fiji, but cars will need to park a bit earlier. Make sure you stop at the last parking area, though, because it’s significantly closer to the waterfall and it’ll save you from hiking too far.

The walk to the falls from the last parking area (aka Warung Fiji) is only about 30-45 minutes, and follows a narrow downhill path.

sekumpul waterfall tour

Lemukih Water Slide

If you want to see yet another waterfall at Sekumpul, there’s also a fun natural water slide located near Lemukih village, called the Lemukih water slide.

It’s a long water slide of about 50 meters, similar to a natural slip n’ slide of sorts, and you can reach it on a quick and easy trek from Lemukih village! The trekking distance from Sekumpul waterfall is also pretty short and manageable.

Best Time To Visit

Any time of day (or season) is good to visit Sekumpul Waterfall and take great photos.

This waterfall doesn’t dry up as much seasonally compared to some other waterfalls in Bali, so you can still visit it in the dry season months of May to November, although it may start to shrink a bit in the later months of the year (especially after August).

Our Sekumpul Waterfall pictures in this travel guide were taken in July, and there was still plenty of flow, plus a nice rainbow in the late afternoon! We’ve seen the rainbow here on two different afternoons in July. The rice terraces in July will be freshly planted (watery), not green, but that can still be nice for photos.

The bright green rice terraces you see in this guide were photographed in March, which is still the rainy season in Indonesia, but we didn’t run into any problems with rain, and the waterfall was still photogenic as usual!

Bali Private Driver & Motorbike Rental

If you want to explore Bali in the comfort and safety of a private car with an English speaking driver, my top recommendation would be GetYourGuide .

Their price is 650k Rupiah ($45 USD) for a full day of driving and sightseeing in Bali (up to 10 hours) for 1-5 passengers. That's the total price for the whole car + driver + petrol! It's a great deal. They also offer affordable hotel transfers from the airport.

If you'd rather travel by motorbike, they have that too. Their scooter rentals start at 140k Rupiah (~$9) and include a helmet, rain coat, and free delivery in the south Bali area.

We've used GetYourGuide for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they're great! Highly recommended.

I thought Sekumpul waterfall is the best waterfall in Bali. Green and good atmosphere

' src=

Definitely one of the best waterfalls!

' src=

Thank you for clearly explaining and exposing the “required guides” scammers and describing how to avoid them. We went today and were harassed by the local guides at Lemukih, who told us it was “not possible” to go to the waterfalls without a guide. We asked, is it possible to go to Warung Fiji without a guide? They said yes. We drove to the car parking and walked to W. Fiji, and one confronted us again there, saying, “We live here and we made this rule”. We said, “We follow the government rules” and got a “fuck you” in response. But they did not physically try to stop us. We walked down the trail, paid the government fee of 20,000 rupiah each, showed our reciepts at the bottom checkpoint (where they tore off a corner for going to Fiji Waterfall), and had a great time at all the falls. Upon our return, the scammer guides glared at us and seemed to be trying to identify our driver. We didn’t let their boorish attempt to create a monopoly by deceotion, for their own benefit, spoil our enjoyment of this lovely spot.

Thanks for the update! Sorry you guys got harassed, but glad you were still able to visit the waterfalls without being scammed.

' src=

Thank you for posting this, it’s much appreciated. Just to clarify, the Sekumpul waterfall official parking on Google is not the recommended place to park, rather Warung Fiji? Aside from the scammers, is it possible to get a legitimate guide at the Warung Fiji parking area? We will not have scooters, only a car. Also, roughly how long is needed to hike to Sekumpul and Fiji waterfalls round trip without stops from the Warung Fiji parking area? We move at average to above average speed.

Hi Craig, thanks for your comment. Yes that’s correct, it’s best to park at Warung Fiji or close to it. The scammers are fine guides though, they will show you everything and take pictures for you etc, I just don’t like being forced to hire a guide, and it’s pretty overpriced for Bali. But if you’re wanting a guide then I’d just negotiate what seems like a fair price with them, otherwise you can also try to hire someone from Warung Fiji to show you the way, but if you reach that point it’s already pretty straightforward, you just walk down the hill and follow the signs. From Warung Fiji, the hike takes about 30-60 minutes to get there, but going back up takes a little longer since it’s all uphill. The total amount of time will depend on a lot of things, like how much time you spend taking pictures etc, but I’d say maybe 2 hours roundtrip with an average speed and some pictures, or 3 hours if you do all the waterfalls and lots of pictures.

Thank you so much! Much appreciated!

' src=

Hi where do we park if we just want to see the view point (20,000idr)? I plan to have a driver for the day but don’t want him to spot at the wrong place and we face getting scammed. Many thanks

Hi. If you mean the viewpoint of the waterfall, it’s inside of the main waterfall area, so you can’t see it unless you get past the scammers, unfortunately. But if you just want to see the view of the rice terraces and mountains, park at Warung Fiji.

' src=

Hi! Just wanted to thank you for this precious information. I came across so many blogs who just didn’t mention this at all.

Great! Welcome!

' src=

They won’t let you go anywhere near it now and there is nowhere to buy the ticket without a guide. The guy with one eye is now in on it too. Thank you for the information though!

Sorry to hear that, but thanks for the update. I have a friend who got in recently without a guide, so maybe it just depends if you’re lucky.

Yeah must be! I tried several times and even showed the photo of that ticket you managed to get but he said you cannot buy that, and the Sekumpul North side said the same.

Navigating to North Bali: Picking the Perfect Ride for Your Sekumpul Adventure!

Tourist woman on rented scooter amidst views of green Balinese rice fields

Planning a trip to Sekumpul Waterfall? Choosing a suitable mode of transport is crucial for a comfortable journey. Here are some options to consider:

1. Motorbike Rental

For couples or solo adventurers staying in South Bali, renting a motorbike can be convenient. It offers the freedom to zip through traffic and enjoy the scenic mountain vistas up close.

But, a word to the wise – pack a raincoat! Mountainous areas are prone to sudden showers, even in the dry season. Depending on the bike model, rental prices typically range from IDR 100,000 to 250,000 per day.

2. Car Rental

Furthermore, you can rent a car in Bali with or without a driver . However, if winding roads and steep climbs aren’t your cup of tea, opt for a car with a driver for a stress-free experience.

For instance,  renting a Toyota Avanza in Bali  may cost around IDR 250,000 – 300,000 per 24 hours without a driver and fuel. With a driver, it’s about IDR 400,000 for 12 hours, excluding fuel. Plus, having a driver means sitting back, relaxing, and soaking in the views.

Bali Tour Packages

Several tour operators in Bali offer packages that include a trip to North Bali in a single day. Therefore, contact a travel agency and request a customized itinerary that includes a visit to Sekumpul Waterfall.

This option is excellent for those who prefer to have everything arranged for them, from transportation to scheduling.

Journey to Sekumpul Cascade: From Parking to Paradise

The trek to Sekumpul Cascade is not for the faint-hearted, but trust me, it’s worth every step. Picture this: a descent of around 350 steps, with sections so steep they’ll make your heart race. But as you navigate the winding path, you’re rewarded with breathtaking views of traditional Balinese houses, lush rambutan and durian trees, terraced rice fields, and rolling green hills.

As the waterfall comes into view, your excitement builds. About 30 minutes later, you’re at the base. Still, one more obstacle to conquer is crossing a river with water reaching an adult’s thigh. It’s all part of the adventure!

Unveiling the Splendor of Bali’s Grandest Waterfall

Visitors enjoy the enchanting beauty of Cascade in North Bali

Sekumpul Waterfall, a hidden paradise in North Bali, is a sight with its twin cascades plummeting from great heights. My first encounter with this natural marvel left me in awe. Meanwhile, the waterfall’s cool mist and thunderous roar welcomed me as I reached the bottom.

I seized the opportunity to swim in the crystal-clear pool beneath the falls, immersing myself in the purity of the mountain water.

What’s fascinating about Sekumpul is its seasonal transformation. Meanwhile, a friend from Buleleng explained that the left waterfall emerges from a hillside spring in the rainy season. At the same time, the right one turns a murky brown, fed by the village river.

Although I missed the color contrast during my dry-season visit, I learned that the waterfall’s cliff stands at an impressive height of about 100 meters.

Despite the exhausting trek, the mesmerizing beauty of these twin waterfalls makes it all worthwhile. Remember, the journey back involves challenging climbing up those steep stairs!

Unveiling Sekumpul: The Enchantment of Seven Waterfalls

What sets Sekumpul Waterfall apart on the global stage is its remarkable assembly of not one, not two, but seven waterfalls! Also, each cascade boasts unique charm, from towering majesties to smaller, more delicate streams.

“Sekumpul” translates to “a group” or “collection,” aptly naming this cluster of seven mesmerizing waterfalls. While international visitors often call it the “Seven Point Waterfall,” locals lovingly call it the “Ceburan Waterfall.”

Moreover, only two of the seven are easily accessible from the main road. The rest are hidden gems that require a bit more effort to uncover. Therefore, this sense of seclusion makes Sekumpul a true treasure of North Bali.

The waterfalls’ crystal-clear waters, set against a backdrop of lush greenery, create an atmosphere of pure natural bliss. Sekumpul is also famed for its stunning rainbows, which frequently grace the falls when sunlight dances through the mist. Also, this magical display adds an extra layer of enchantment to the Sekumpul experience.

Beyond marveling at the waterfalls and mountain vistas, Sekumpul offers a picturesque setting for pre-wedding photoshoots or memorable snaps with friends and family.

Curious about the other five waterfalls? To fully explore the seven wonders of Sekumpul Village, consider hiring a trekking guide who knows the area inside out.

Optimal Time for Trekking to Sekumpul Waterfall: Embrace the Morning Adventure

Natural Cascade seen from the air, surrounded by green trees in Bali, Indonesia

Moreover, for those eager to explore the captivating beauty of Sekumpul Waterfall, the ideal time to embark on your trekking journey is in the morning. Therefore, aim to start your adventure between 07:00 and 08:00 am to seize the best experience.

You might wonder why it is early to start. Well, there’s a practical reason. Mornings typically have a lower chance of rain than afternoons. Since rainfall can make the trails slippery, an early start ensures a safer trekking experience.

Now, considering that Sekumpul is a reasonable distance from the  famous tourist spots in South Bali , the journey from Kuta could take about 3 hours. This means a departure from Kuta around the ungodly hour of 4 am. Yes, it does sound incredibly early, doesn’t it?

But fear not, there’s an alternative for those not keen on a pre-dawn start. You can head out in the afternoon and spend the night at a hotel in Singaraja. This way, you can set off for your trek to Sekumpul Cascade the following day, feeling refreshed and ready to immerse yourself in nature’s wonders without any rush.

Ideal Months to Visit Sekumpul Waterfall: Timing Your Adventure Just Right

When selecting the perfect time to visit Sekumpul Waterfall, the prime window is the dry season from April to October. If you want to witness the waterfalls at their most potent with minimal rain, then March and April are your best bets.

However, planning your visit between May and October might make the waterfalls less voluminous. The upside is that the trekking paths are generally drier and more comfortable to navigate during this period.
