Southwold Sea Fishing Mark

A lovely seaside town and home to the Adnam’s brewery, where the pier has been rebuilt in recent years.

A local club controls the pier fishing, but day tickets are available at the entrance, tel: 01502 722105. Fishing is 8.30am to 4.30pm.

The end of the pier goes just beyond a sandbank running parallel to the beach, so offers access into reasonable depth. At the southern end of the beach is the harbour where the River Blyth enters the sea. There is a strong tidal flow but plenty of fishing potential right through to the saltmarshes at Blythburgh. The beach is a sand and shingle mix and fishes well on the flood and ebb.

Mullet work their way into the saltmarshes in summer and there are bass in the harbour, around the pier and from the beaches from May to September. Fishing for soles can be excellent from June to September with the beach north of the pier favoured. Whiting arrive in September and leave at Christmas, while codling show from October to April.

Lure fishing for bass is popular at the harbour entrance, but the big fish are caught on fish guts or whole squid fished near the commercial boats. Ragworms are used for soles, although lug will catch. Lug tipped with fish or squid takes bigger whiting. Lug tipped with squid is good for codling. Peeler crabs are best in spring for codling and bass.

Carp rods can be used for lure fishing. There is plenty of room to cast from the pier so standard beach rods are fine. The tide can be quite strong, but 150g sinkers are usually enough. Distance casting is sometimes needed from the beach for codling and whiting, but the soles are usually very close. Fixed spools and small multipliers loaded with 15lb line and a shockleader will suffice.

Pier Closure

Due to high winds, unfortunately, the Pier is currently closed.

There’s plenty of fish in the Southwold sea.

Keen fisher or novice, you’re welcome to spend your day sea angling from the end of the Pier.  Cast your line at Southwold’s most easterly point and see what takes the bait. Regular catches include Whiting in the autumn and Codling in the winter, while Dover Sole and Bass are plucked from the water in the summer months.

You can pick up a Day Fishing Permit from any of the units along the Pier for just £6.50 which will allow you to enjoy a full day’s fishing.

It’s a wonderful place to see the sunrise and a great place to enjoy true peace and quiet. And if you need any tips or local knowledge, there’s usually a member of the Southwold Pier Angling Club nearby who will be happy to share their experience.

If you are looking for a fishing charter boat in the Felixstowe area then you have come to the right place.  You will receive a warm and friendly welcome from your skipper Garry, who is also the boat’s owner.

We specialise in deep sea wreck fishing and inshore bottom fishing.  We cater for groups chartering the whole boat.

We have hundreds of wrecks and numerous rough ground and banks to target.

Come and enjoy a day aboard Dawn Raider, our fast, spacious and well-equipped 260hp, 29ft boat;  purpose built for sea fishing.

We also offer boat trips and and charters for all occasions along the scenic Suffolk Coast.

RIVER FISHING TRIPS

Four hour river fishing trips available.  Anchoring and drifting for bass during summer months.  

Tariff: £280.00 for 4 people including rag worm bait.

INSHORE FISHING TRIPS

We offer a wide variety of fishing trips and charters from Levington Marina, Felixstowe (Suffolk Yacht Harbour) aboard Dawn Raider. We run bottom fishing trips all year round, which normally involves fishing inshore over  rough grounds or sandbanks. Most of these are no more than a 30 minute cruise out of Levington Marina. This type of fishing is ideal for those new to fishing and also experienced.

Tariff: Uptide/Inshore:  £420.00 (max 8 people – includes squid bait)

OFFSHORE FISHING TRIPS – We are currently not operating this trip.

The Suffolk Coast is one of the premier spots for deep sea wreck fishing trips with several hundred wrecks to choose from.   Our wrecking season is generally from April to September with main target species being cod and bass. The wrecks we generally fish are lying in depths of 45—65m and most are reached within 60 minutes of leaving Levington Marina, maximizing your fishing time.

Tariff: £650.00 (max 7 people)

We have carried out film work on board Dawnraider for BBC, Channel 4, Discovery, Windfall Films, CBS and various international film companies.

SCATTERING OF ASHES

We can also arrange a respectful scattering of ashes for when someone passes away who wishes to have their ashes scattered at sea;  perhaps an ex-mariner. 

Tariff: £230 Harbour Entrance.

Over the years we have carried out various above and below water surveys.

Dawn Raider is a great workboat due to her large open deck which can be useful for a variety of different purposes.

In our part of the country there are different species of fish at different times of the year.  We can advise you on what is in season and what will be available to catch.

We offer advice on rods and reels and also what tackle you need to bring.  We can also offer advice on bait, what to bring or what we can supply.

Walberswick River Trips

We will be starting our scheduled trips from May. Online booking is now available. Private trips can be booked from Easter onwards.

Come and join us on one of our boats, Daybreeze or Seafever, for a relaxing one-hour trip along the River Blyth in Suffolk. Our qualified skipper will take you on a journey through the Walberswick Nature reserve, an area of Outstanding National Beauty, towards Blythburgh. We will recount stories of local history, the changing coastline and recall some smuggling tales as you sit back and enjoy the stunning views and wildlife that our estuary has to offer. You may even be lucky enough to spot a seal and many of the beautiful birds that frequent our river.

Ticket prices

Trips last approximately one hour and we can take up to ten passengers on each trip. Please arrive ten minutes before the time of your trip so we can fit you with life jackets.

Tickets cost £20 for adults (15 years+) and £10.00 for children (14 years and under) This ticket price includes a £5 non refundable booking fee.

Infants, under two, can travel free, although they must be included when booking.

Private Boat Hire

Our boats are available for private hire for special occasions. We have had some amazing private trips so far including proposals, birthday parties, stag and hen parties, bird watching trips, corporate trips or just families getting together.

We are happy for you to bring your own picnics, and refreshments to have on the boat; this is especially popular on the evening sunset trips.

We charge £180.00 for the whole boat for one hour's exclusive hire and can take up to 10 passengers on each trip.

How to find us and where to park

Getting to us by car or foot

Our trip leaves from the Walberswick side of the River Blyth opposite the Southwold to Walberswick Foot Ferry.

We operate from the Walberswick Ferry hut, at the ferry near to the public car park on Ferry Road, Walberswick, IP18 6TJ.

There are two car parks in Walberswick, Ferry Road Car Park and the Beach Car Park. Ferry Road Car Park is only a few minutes walk from us. If you are arriving from the Southwold side there is parking on the Harbour Car Park and then you can walk over the Bailey Bridge (1.5 mile walk) or take the foot ferry open 10:00 until 17:00 daily from Easter to October 2022. The ferry costs £2.00 per adult and £1.00 per child for each crossing.

We will endeavor to get back to you as quickly as possible but please remember that during the Summer Season we may be on the boat until the evening with no access to the internet.

Please be aware that we are unable to offer private charter trips with less than 24 hours notice.

Charters Out Of Southwold?

Hello Fellas Has anyone got the contact numbers for any of the boats out of Southwold? My birthday has duly come round as they do and the old fella has kindly offered to take me out afloat. He had a chat to one of the guys at Yarmouth who has said he goes a couple of miles off and they've been getting a few Whiting and Doggies which dosn't really sound very promising for a one off. Has anybody been out off Southwold recently and done ok? Also an idea on the cost would be handy. Thanks in adavnce..  

hi, I have no experience of charters around that area, however, although this info may mean a bit of a drive for you, they are a great crew and have been finding some fish.they run out of wells. £65 a day all in. tackle,bait,food,drink. http://www.norfolkseafishing.co.uk/ check out nigels diary for latest catches. all the best simon. :fish:  

Yo Dan, we had a couple of cracking trips out of Southwold in 2006 and 2007. If you search "southwold mistress" the threads should come up. You'll gather she's been sold. There is now a fast Cat that runs the wrecks out of 'stoft. In fact the lads should be out this Sunday, gutted I can't do this one but such is life. They'll be a report on here shortly after, so it might help with decisions if you can wait that long. Many happy returns btw. Not sure if there are any other long haul wreckers out of Southwold?

Cheers anyway Booster! I ain't so sure there's a decent Bass left in the North Sea to catch. It seems to of been very quite all round the coast this year for spikeys. Hows your fishing going Booster, Coarse or Sea?

You're a gent Nigel!! I'll let you know what I end up doing. Much appreciated! How many of the Cod did you end up taking home and mores to the point where'd you put all those fillets?? I might have to invest in a chest freezer before I head out.

Cheers BJ I've got the same ethos with the fish I get off the beach. If you kill something to eat it's almost your duty to make as much use of it as you can. Mind you I've got more stock in the freezer than I know what to do with.. Thanks for all the info. Good bunch of guys on this site for this sort of thing.. Top stuff..
