1980 | A boy is born Born Joseph Rosenberg, Jimmy Rosenberg comes from a Sinti (Gypsy) family and was born 10th. April 1980 in Helmond, in the southern region of The Netherlands. He is a son of Engelina (Papi) Weisz and Franco (Macky) Rosenberg, and a cousin of Nonnie, Nous’che and Stochelo Rosenberg, members of the renowned Rosenberg Trio. Jimmy Rosenberg started playing guitar when he was seven years old. Two years later he led his own trio, the Gypsy Kids, which played in the Gypsy jazz tradition and appeared on the British documentary Django Legacy. The trio released its first album, Safari, when Rosenberg was twelve. A year later Rosenberg released his debut solo album, Swinging with Jimmy Rosenberg In 1995, the Gypsy Kids consisted of Jimmy Rosenberg, Johnny Rosenberg, and Rinus Steinbach. They performed at the Django Reinhardt Festival in France and toured the U.S. To avoid a lawsuit by the Gipsy Kings, the Gypsy Kids changed their name to Sinti. Rosenberg pursued a solo career in 1997. In 2000 he made his debut at Carnegie Hall as part of the Django Reinhardt Festival at Birdland in New York City. He has worked with Norwegians such as Hot Club de Norvège, Ola Kvernberg, and Stian Carstensen. Internationally, he has worked with Romane, Jon Larsen, Andreas Öberg, Bireli Lagrene, Angelo Debarre, Les Paul, Frank Vignola, and Willie Nelson. His life is documented in the Dutch film The Father, the Son, and the Talent (2007). The film is an account of Rosenberg's relationship with his father and his struggles with drugs. It documents the high regard given to him by James Brown, Stevie Wonder. The documentary film Jon & Jimmy, about his long but turbulent relationship with jazz guitarist Jon Larsen, was released in 2010 and won the Dutch Edison Award. Rosenberg returned to performing in 2007, but he dropped out again the following year. Jon Larsen said, "Jimmy Rosenberg is one of the greatest talents in the jazz guitar world, ever, and one of the greatest tragedies. ... Final collapses in 2004. What follows is an episode of loss: the death of his son, suicide attempt, overdoses, brain hemorrhage and a talent that finally ends in deep darkness. In 2020, an existential miracle happens. In deep reflection, he wrestles with the question of whether he still wants to continue, and music still has meaning. He asks in desperation for a sign. The car horn sounds, and who is standing at the door: Johan Peeters. For Jimmy, that's the deciding factor. He wants to return - together with the help of Johan, who becomes a personal manager. Unfortunately, another difficult time is approaching due to the external factor of the global pandemic. Concerts are postponed or cancelled, and border traffic restricted.  A new start, calls for a new organization. David, Johan and Jimmy made an agreement of exclusive cooperation. The idea arose to establish an online Jimmy Rosenberg Academy and a prestigious international gypsy swing concours. The founding year is 2022. The Jimmy Rosenberg Academy is an umbrella organization with several departments and related activities: a Jimmy Rosenberg Foundation with non-profit sponsorship opportunities, an online school with an academic teaching curriculum and international masterclasses, a webshop with educational videos, cd's, dvd's and other exclusive sale. Professionalization is carried out in all branches by establishing its own recording studio, production house and label under the internationally protected brand name 'Jolie Môme'.                                  In the meantime, there have been brilliant performances during the Django Reindhardt Festivals in Milan (Italy) and Fountainebleau (France). Online concerts with famous guest artists and other stage performances are in the pipeline. The year 2022 will go down in history as the founding year of the academy and a second musical life of Jimmy Rosenberg, in good company with his teams and organizations. Having performed and toured with Joe Henderson, Nancy Wilson, Roy Hargrove and Stan Getz, bassist Marlene Rosenberg has a background of performing with the jazz icons. But she also traffics with the newest generation of jazz artists, including Jazzmeia Horn, Makaya McCraven and Marquis Hill.

Ms. Rosenberg’s festival credits include the Mt. Fuji Festival (Tokyo), The North Sea Festival (Rotterdam, Holland), and the Kristianstad-Ahus Festival (Sweden). As for clubs, Marlene has played The Village Vanguard in NYC, The Chicago Jazz Showcase, The Quasimodo in Berlin and The Magnetic Terrace in Paris.

Having self-produced 4 CDs, Marlene has recorded both standards and her own compositions.

Her latest recorded work, MLK Convergence is a collaborative venture that includes NEA master pianist Kenny Barron, drummer Lewis Nash and in a guest feature, fellow bassist Christian McBride.

All About Jazz’ Dan Bilawsky, described the album’s effect as “shedding light and love to overshadow the darkness.” It’s a “Convergence” of Cultures, Generations and Gender. “MLK” is also an acronym for Marlene, Lewis, and Kenny who have endeavored musically to embody Martin Luther King Jr.’s message of better understanding and acceptance for ALL people.

A frequent collaborator with internationally-recognized tap dancers, Marlene has performed with Jimmy Slyde, and with Sarah Petronio’s Dance Company. In a program filmed at a special event filmed at The Harold Washington Library, Marlene performed with young tap artist Jumaane Taylor as part of the 2020 Award Ceremony for The Chicago Tap Dancers Forum.

As a frequent invited guest artist and clinician, Rosenberg has adjudicated and taught master classes at Michigan State University, The Buddy DeFranco Festival in Montana, and Arizona State University’s Jazz Festival and the International Society of Bassists.

Originating from Chicago, IL, Charles "Rick" Heath IV is a versatile and renowned musician from local to international levels. Playing anything from Jazz and Blues to Gospel and Latin music, his signature sound is prominent in the recording studios, concert settings, live Broadway theater platforms, and currently as the drummer for pianist and jazz legend Ramsey Lewis. Some of his proudest accolades include works with Donald Byrd, McCoy Tyner, and Slide Hampton. He also served as the resident drummer with the national tour of Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones' theater production of "The Color Purple." He is often rotating hats of composer, band leader, recording artist, musical director, producer and teacher and simply inspires and outreaches to his surrounding communities at all times.

Mr. Heath began his musical journey as a drummer very early in life. It was said his mother would sit by the drums in church during the time she was expecting him, and she said, "When the drums started kicking, he started kicking, and when they stopped, he stopped." After being born, Charles would beat on anything he could get his hands on. Charles took no prisoners as he destroyed spoons, forks, combs and brushes to make music. He stared grabbing attention back in his grammar school days by winning countless local talent shows and moved along to begin working professionally in Chicago already by the age of 14. He then carried on to Shaw University in North Carolina attaining a degree in Music Performance while on full scholarship. There he started his first quartet entitled "Touch of Jazz" and performed at local political events and private parties.

Upon his return back to Chicago from college graduation, Mr. Heath was quick to start playing and collaborating with Chicago jazz legends such as Von Freeman, the Ken Chaney Xperience, Malachi Thompson, Robert "Babe" Irving III and was even a part of a documentary of the legendary Oscar Brown, Jr. His talents have been showcased at renowned venues and events such as: The Chicago Jazz Festival, the Chicago Jazz Showcase, Birdland (Edmonton, Canada), The Blue Note (Poznan, Poland and Tokyo, Japan), San Juan Jazz Festival, BB King’s (New York City, NY), Jazz Alley (Seattle, WA), Ronnie Scott’s (London, England), Le Duc Des Lombards (Paris, France), and Porgy & Bess (Vienna, Austria).

Heath’s prominent sound can be heard on recordings with Ramsey Lewis, Robert “Babe” Irving III, Bobby Broom, Zvonimir Tot, Larry Gray, Sergio Perez, Ken Chaney and the Roger Harris Trio. He proudly launched his first independent recording project entitled "Conversations" encompassing the sound of his very own Charles Heath Quartet.

Currently, Mr. Heath produces a live jazz concert series every Wednesday entitled: “Charles Heath Presents: Jazz’n on the South Side.” Heath prides himself in booking the best local and international talent Chicago has to offer. Mr. Heath has also touched the lives of many of his students as a renowned teacher and has opened many doors outreaching to underprivileged youth. He has implemented the music program at Ruggles Elementary School and developed a "Say No To Drugs" Drumline having the youth perform at a local annual "Say No To Drugs" parade. He's implemented a marching band for the Alain Locke Charter school and produced a concert where he was able to raise $10,000 for the school to purchase instruments for the children. He has taught at South Shore High School, Kellar Middle School and taught private lessons for troubled African American males at the New Direction Outreach Center.

Mr. Heath is the founder and director of The Heath School of Music , currently located in Kennicott Park (4434 S. Lake Park Ave, Chicago, IL 60653). Theodis Rodgers Jr. is an American Jazz pianist and multi-keyboardist from Chicago, Illinois. He has worked in theater, television and motion pictures as a performer, composer, arranger, producer and music conductor/director both nationally and internationally. Theodis has appeared on countless album recordings.

He has served as music director, pianist/keyboardist and studio musician for Curtis Mayfield, Patti LaBelle, Angela Bofill, Jennifer Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Ramsey Lewis, Henry Johnson, Freddie Hubbard, and The Emotions.

Theodis is a former member of the funk/rock band Love Craft . He also currently tours as pianist/conductor for Sandy Hackett’s ‘Rat Pack Show' .

Mr. Rodgers’ film credits include a cameo appearance with Sheena Easton in the movie “ Indecent Proposal ”. He also co-wrote music for the  movie “ A Family Thing ” which featured actors Robert DuVall and James Earl Jones .

Theodis has recently  concluded a multi-city tour of Russia with vocalist, Tecora Rogers and the Chicago Spirituals with performances in concert halls and cathedrals across the country. He has also performed at the Hat Jazz Club in St. Petersburg, Russia.

In 2012, Theodis lived and performed in Beijing, China . He appeared regularly at Beijing’s China Wing Hotel and The East Shore Live Jazz Cafe. He also conducted Master classes at  the Beijing Contemporary Music Institute.

Recently, Theodis has appeared along with Classical pianist, George Cooper and Ragtime pianist, Reginald Robinson in a self - penned concert series called ” From Mozart to Monk”.

His theatrical performances as a musical director and/or pianist include productions of ‘ Ain’t Misbehavin’ , Tony Award winner Hinton Battle’s ‘Largely Live’ , ’Dreamgirls’ and ‘ Jesus Christ Superstar ’.

The Rosenberg Trio have played at all the major jazz festivals: Jazz Festival of Montreal, North Sea Jazz, Django Reinhardt Festival in Samois, Jazz In Marciac Jazz à Vienne, Carnegie Hall New York and The Rose Bowl Los Angeles. With all the great musicians: Toots Thielemans, Jan Akkerman, Stéphane Grappelli, Herman van Veen, Jaap van Zweden, Louis van Dijk, Peter Beets, etc. The Rosenbergs were the support act of Shirley Bassey, Randy Crawford, en Luciano Pavarotti. Over the past twenty-five years, the Rosenberg have played all around the world, and established themselves as the best in their field. Inspired by Django Reinhardt they broaden their oeuvre with classical, pop and bossa nova in gypsy swing style. They also have a large number of own compositions. ジョー・ローゼンバーグ（Joe Rosenberg）が2020年以来の来日となる日本ツアーを2023年の春に実現させた（３月３０日～４月９日）。彼のトリオには落合康介(b)、大村亘(ds)が参加。 ジョー・ローゼンバーグ はバリ島、シンガポール、クアラルンプールなど東南アジアで精力的に活動し、このツアーの後はシンガポールでダレン・ムーア（Darren Moore）と共演している。

このライヴを通して感じたのは、ジャズの即興ライヴでは、音楽家たちの過去の積み重ねをじわじわと反映させて滋味深いものが生まれるということだった。ジョー・ローゼンバーグの演奏を聴くようになって４年ぐらいしか経っていないのだが、彼のライヴで味わうものは、過去２０年以上の音楽家の活動から染み出すエッセンスだろう。それが未来に向けてゆっくりと広がっていくように感じる。 今回の彼のライヴでは、早世した音楽仲間へ思いを込めた曲が演奏された。ここではライヴレポートだけでなく、サックス奏者ジョー・ローゼンバーグのかつての共演者で、神戸在住だった浜村昌子(piano)についても触れたい。また、ジョー・ローゼンバーグの過去の日本ツアーについても振り返りたいと思う。

ファーストセットはウェイン・ショーター作曲の〈nefertiti>から始まった。彼のオリジナル曲から始まる予定だったのに、急にこの曲に変わったようだ。大村亘のダイナミックで引き締まったドラミングの重量感に比べると、ソプラノサックスとベースはどこか飄々としていて、その対比が面白い。独特のムードのあるこの曲の管楽器のソロに、ねっとりとした感触を予想したが、ローゼンバーグの音はややあっさりとしていた。だが起爆剤があちこちに撒かれるようなスリリングな演奏で、終盤で激しさを増すドラミングがストレートに曲を盛り上げるのが心地よい。

その後ショーター追悼の言葉が出てくるかと思えばそんなことはなく、ローゼンバーグの曲〈.357〉が始まる。（.357と数字の前にピリオドがつくと、357口径、.357マグナム弾の意味になるようだ。） 続く曲〈21, 22, 23〉は2021、2022、2023の年を表しているという。21年と22年には新型コロナウィルスが猛威を振るい、来日できなかったが、23年にやっと来ることができたという思いを込めて書いた新曲とのこと。ローゼンバーグの曲は「風雲急を告げる」という感じの緊張感に満ちた曲が多く、動き回るベースに絡むサックスの音を、暗がりを照らす光の軌跡を追うように聴いた。ファーストセットの最後の〈Blood Count〉は記事の最後にアルバム音源のリンクを載せている。

最初の〈nefertiti>だけでなく、セカンドステージではウェイン・ショーター作曲の〈Iris〉も演奏され、先ごろ亡くなったショーターへの追悼の意が伝わる選曲だった。

今回のライヴで、もう一人追悼の思いが込められたピアニストがいる。東南アジアを中心に海外でのジョー・ローゼンバーグの公演に何度も参加した浜村昌子である。〈Hamamura〉と題された曲をこのトリオはセカンドセットで演奏した。このコンサートが行われたのは彼女が亡くなった４月９日（2019年）に近く、桜の咲く頃だ。彼女への言葉を手向けるように、〈Hamamura〉が捧げられる。深い悲しみの時は過ぎ去り、彼女の遺したものを慈しむ時間が訪れたのを感じながら、この曲を聴いた。

ピアニスト、浜村昌子と彼の曲〈Hamamura〉について、ジョー・ローゼンバーグに尋ねると、メールで返事をしてくれた。拙訳を添えて紹介したい。 I wanted to write something for her and her memory. something that she would have liked to play and that reflected some of her qualities; beauty, simplicity, subtlety. I think I achieved that. (彼女のために、彼女との思い出のために、何か書きたくてね。彼女なら、どんなふうに弾きたかっただろうと考え、浜村昌子に備わっていたもの、つまり、美しさ、シンプルさ、細やかで奥深い表現といったものを反映させた曲を書きかった。それは達成できたと思う）

ジョー・ローゼンバーグは1999年に浜村昌子に偶然出会ったという。その後彼女はJoe Rosenberg Quartet Eastに参加してバリ島などアジアを拠点に活動した。「浜村昌子との出会いのきっかけを作ったのは、神戸Big Appleの近藤さんかもしれない。「一瞬で彼女と音楽でのつながりを感じた私は、それ以来できる限り彼女とプレイすることを心がけた」とジョー・ローゼンバーグは書いている。

Without doubt the most celebrated gypsy jazz guitarist since Django Reinhardt and arguably the finest jazz guitarist in Europe right now, the Dutch Sinti Gypsy Stochelo Rosenberg has performed at the world’s major jazz festivals such as the Montreal Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz, the Django Reinhardt Festival in Samois, Jazz In Marciac, Jazz à Vienna and in the world’s most famous venues including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles.

He has released 26 albums to date and amongst his many career highlights he counts performing and recording extensively with the great Stéphane Grappeli who commented on Stochelo’s playing as ‘absolutely the best…’. Another high was his recent commission to provide the soundtrack for the French blockbuster movie Django , a film about the legendary guitarist’s life and music.

The Stochelo Rosenberg Trio features the British guitar virtuoso and master accompanist Chris Quinn and the leading Dutch double bassist Arnoud Vandenberg .

Together they are considered to be one of the best and tightest rhythm sections in the business.

Odd Trio of New York Mets Players Used to Promote MLB's Upcoming London Series

Many jokes have been made at the New York Mets ' expense as they prepare to face the Philadelphia Phillies across the pond this weekend, and for good reason.

The Mets are 25-35 on the season and 13-27 since April 21. New York's constant blown leads have buried them in fourth place in the NL East, 16.5 games behind the division-leading Phillies, making them a poor candidate to grow the game on the MLB World Tour.

And still, New York has a decent level of star power, one that could be leveraged to build hype for the upcoming London Series.

Pete Alonso, Kodai Senga, Francisco Lindor, Starling Marte, Brandon Nimmo and Edwin Diaz are among the team's most recognizable names, for example. However, a Mets fan shared a photo of a poster outside a New Balance store in London promoting the matchup, and none of them were featured.

Instead, relievers Reed Garrett, Jake Reed and Adam Ottavino were front and center.

Looking beyond the fact that the three veteran relievers are hardly faces of the franchise, Reed hasn't played for the Mets since 2022.

Reed is not currently under contract with any team, for that matter, most recently taking the mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023. In nine appearances for New York between 2021 and 2022, Reed went 1-1 with and 8.18 ERA.

The Mets waived Reed in July 2022.

Ottavino, although he is in his third season with the Mets, stands out as an odd choice as well. After going 7-10 with a 2.62 ERA and 15 saves between 2022 and 2023, the 38-year-old journeyman is 1-2 with a 5.96 ERA and one save in 2024.

Even Garrett, who is a more palatable 5-2 with a 3.00 ERA and three saves so far this season, is hardly considered to be a draw for fans.

In a poster in the opposite window, superstars Bryce Harper, Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber repressented the Phillies.

The London Series will take place on June 8 and 9. Sean Manaea and Jose Quintana are set to serve as the Mets' starting pitchers in the two games.

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox played in the first London Series in 2019, while the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs met at London Stadium in 2023.
