How to Save the Most on an Amtrak Trip If You're 65+

Retirement is the perfect time to see the U.S. by train — here's every Amtrak discount seniors can take advantage of.

rail travel discounts for over 60

Traveling by train around the United States is romantic, convenient, and comfortable — but it's not always cheap.

Booking one of Amtrak’s wide, plush seats or overnight cars can be an expensive proposition, but it doesn’t have to be if you just take a few minutes to dig around the Amtrak site to find every discount, sale, and savings option the train service offers. And Amtrak discounts can be especially huge for one select group: those aged 65 and over.

Amtrak Discounts for Seniors

Amtrak always offers specific discounts to seniors, including its regular 10 percent discount on most rail fares on most Amtrak trains. And, as Amtrak explained on its site, “On cross-border services operated jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada, a 10 percent senior discount is applicable to travelers aged 60 and over.”

Amtrak Downeaster Line Discounts

Amtrak also offers even bigger savings on specific routes including a 50 percent discount on Downeaster line tickets.

“Catch the train to Portland, ME and explore the Old Port, or head to Boston for a day of shopping, museum visits or a walk along the Freedom Trail. Travel to any destination on the Downeaster and save 50 percent with this special offer available only to seniors (65 and up),” Amtrak explained.

Amtrak Early Bird Discounts

Combine that with Amtrak's ongoing sale for early birds — who can save 25 percent on their fare when they book a minimum of 7-21 days in advance — and you've got yourself quite the affordable train fare.

Senior Train Travel Discounts in Europe

rail travel discounts for over 60

Although most senior travelers associate senior discounts with rail passes, some European countries offer mature travelers discounts on individual tickets. Typically, you will need to purchase some kind of annual membership card to qualify for the senior discount. Requirements vary by country and are subject to change. In some countries, non-European Union seniors are not eligible for discount cards.

If you plan to travel by train on just a few days over a one- or two-month period, you may find that a rail pass will save you money. BritRail and France's SNCF offer senior discounts on certain types of rail passes. Senior discounts also apply to the Eurail Ireland and Eurail Romania Passes.

Do not assume that a rail pass is the cheapest way to go. Depending on the countries you plan to visit, the number of train trips you plan to take, and the senior discount plans available, you may save more by purchasing a senior card and applying its discount to your tickets. It is worth spending some time at your computer to research the best deal.

Terms by Country

Let's take a look at senior train travel discounts by country.

Belgium offers seniors age 65 and older a great senior discount on non-peak train travel . Tickets are just 6.50 Euros each if you travel after 9:01 A.M. on weekdays. You can also get this senior fare on weekends during the school year. Restrictions apply; some "frontier" train stations do not offer the senior fare. This discount is unavailable on August 15, during holiday periods and summer weekends. Proof of age is required.

France gives seniors age 60 and older the opportunity to purchase a Carte Senior+  for 60 Euros. The Carte Senior+ entitles you to discounts of 25 to 50 percent on train travel. You can also change your train ticket for only 5 Euros; the normal change fee is 15 Euros.

Germany offers senior travelers over age 60 a discount on the BahnCard 50 . Seniors pay 255 Euros for the second class BahnCard50, which gives you a 50 percent discount on flexible fare train tickets as well as a 25 percent discount on certain saver fares in the German rail system. Carefully research each leg of your journey to see whether the BahnCard50 is a good option for you. If you are traveling with one or more companions, Germany's Weekend Tickets may be a better bet, depending on your travel dates.

Italy offers the Carta d'Argento ("Silver Card") to senior travelers over age 60. The card costs 30 Euros (free for travelers over 75) and is valid for one year. With the Carta d'Argento, you will save 15 percent on most Italian train tickets and 10 percent on couchette tickets (second-class sleeper berths). You will also be able to participate in the RailEurope system with its 25 percent discount on international travel. You have to show both your ticket and your Carta d'Argento to the conductor. Certain restrictions apply.

Portugal's CP rail system offers seniors age 65 and older discounts on several different types of trains, including regional, interregional and Coimbra Urban trains. The typical discount is 50 percent. Restrictions apply.

Spain's RENFE rail system offers senior travelers 60 and older the Tarjeta Dorada ("Gold Card"). With the Tarjeta Dorada, you will save 25 to 50 percent on train tickets, depending on the type of train, the day of the week you travel and how far in advance you buy your tickets. You can buy your Tarjeta Dorada at a RENFE station for 6 Euros; it will be valid for one year.

The UK's Senior Railcard gives you a one-third discount on a wide variety of standard and first-class tickets. Morning rush hour travel within the London and the South East area does not qualify for the Senior Railcard discount. The Senior Railcard costs £30 and is available to anyone age 60 or over. British train fares are quite high, so it is also worth investigating a BritRail pass if you plan to take several train trips.

Eurostar , which operates the Chunnel trains, no longer advertises a senior fare.

Disclaimer: Some train systems may restrict senior discounts to citizens of European Union communities, even though their websites do not indicate any such restrictions.

What transport concessions are available?

Can i get a free bus pass, can i get a discount on train travel, can i get a london freedom pass, what if i have difficulty using public transport, what if i'm unable to use public transport, more travel concessions questions.

There are several national public transport concessions available to older and disabled people. Some entitle you to discounts on your fares, while others allow you to travel for free.

Eligibility for these concessions depends on whether you have a disability or your age.

Depending on your age and your circumstances, you might be able to get one of the following free bus passes, which allow you to travel free on local buses:

  • an older person's bus pass

What age do I have to be to get an older person's bus pass?

Find your local council and apply for a disabled person's bus pass on GOV.UK

Are there any other discounts if I'm an older person or I'm disabled?

It's a good idea to contact individual transport operators to see if they offer discounts.

For instance, National Express offers Coachcards. These are discount cards for older or disabled customers. You buy them for a set fee of £15.00 and they get you a third off the cost of your travel across the year.

Find out more and order a Coachcard on the National Express website

If you're disabled, you can't use public transport, or you don't have access to a car, you might also be able to use a community transport scheme – such as a social car, dial-a-ride, or taxicard scheme.

Shopmobility schemes help people shop in town centres by lending out wheelchairs and scooters. Some local councils also offer concessions on local public transport.

Historically, travel suppliers have often courted senior travelers with special discounts. But the current status across travel types is uneven: Some supplier groups offer senior discounts almost entirely; others, like airlines hardly offer them at all anymore. Often, you need to know where to look to find them and how to secure one—but sometimes all it takes is asking for a senior travel discount to be applied.

The Best Senior Discounts in Travel:

Some suppliers offer percent or dollars-off discounts to senior travelers, typically starting at age 60 or 65. Here’s my take on the best brands for senior discounts, plus some great overall senior-focused brands, for every type of travel—from airlines to tours, cruises, rail, and more.

Airline: British Airways via AARP

Once common, senior discounts on airline tickets have virtually disappeared from the marketplace. Southwest, the last holdout among U.S. lines, discontinued its special senior fares in 2019.

One of the last remaining airline senior discounts is the AARP discount on British Airways , which is available to just about any senior as $65 off any economy or premium economy ticket, and as $200 off any business class ticket. Discounts apply to any ticket purchase, including flash sales. Seniors need to buy directly from British Airways through its AARP portal to get the discount.

While $65 may not be a game changer, you don’t sacrifice anything to get it. And $200 off a business class ticket is especially good when you start with a flash-sale fare. However, the main caveat is that British Airways’ business class on most planes isn’t typically anything special. Your best bet might instead be to use the discount for a true business class ticket on a code-shared flight: British Airways flights operates by American Airlines or Iberia have a more competitive business class right now.

(Note: Throughout 2020 British Airways is rolling out new business class suites on some international routes .)

Hotel: No Clear Winner

Most major international hotel chains offer modest senior discounts, typically of five to 10 percent, to seniors at various ages (usually 50 through 65). In some cases, discounts are available through AARP; in others, no membership is required. And the AARP deals are seldom any better than those offered to members of AAA and many other organizations. Senior discounts at hotels are most prevalent in the U.S. and Canada. Typically, local chain and independent hotels in Asia and Europe do not offer senior discounts.

Over the years, my conclusion about AARP or other senior discounts has been that they’re good for at least a small price cut when you can’t find a better deal through some other source available to travelers of any age. Among the ones to check first are: Opaque rates through Hotwire or Priceline (which reveal the specific property after purchase), flash-sale rates, and air/hotel packages for your destination.

Rental Car: Avis and Budget via AARP

Just about anyone can qualify for a typical rental car discount. But the AARP deal with Avis and Budget is different because, in addition to a 30-percent discounted rate, the base rate includes better liability coverage than almost all other rates.

Seniors with car preferences should also consider National. With its Emerald Aisle program , National pioneered the approach of allowing each renter to choose a preferred car from those available. For those seniors who are fussy about which model they drive, National’s system works especially well.

Rail: Amtrak, VIA Rail Canada, and Eurail Pass

The best rail brand depends on your destination. Amtrak currently offers 10 percent discount on coach class travel for travelers age 65 and over—or age 60 and over on cross-border travel with VIA Rail. That’s on most trains, but not the high-speed Acela, the Auto Train , Saver Fares , or on business class or sleeper-accommodation trains. Although Amtrak has been doing senior discounts for many years, it has in the recent past listed senior discounts as “ending soon,” with neither a specific cutoff date nor any suggestion of what might come. Amtrak also offers time-limited special senior discounts. Current offerings include a 50 percent discount on Downeaster trains and a 15 percent discount for seniors age 62 or over on Capitol Corridor , Pacific Surfliner , and San Joaquins lines.

Canada’s VIA Rail goes a bit further than Amtrak. It offers discounts around 10 percent on all trains, including sleeper accommodations as well as coach. But the very best deals are the weekly discount promotions , where cuts are far deeper on selected routes. Note: At this writing, the VIA Rail website says: “Discount Sleeper Deals will return in early January 2020.”

In Europe, you have a bunch of choices: No one line is “best” for everyone; but here’s how you can choose the one that’s best for your trip:

The Eurail Pass now offers senior passes for travelers age 60-plus at 10 percent off. The discount is available for both first- and coach-class travel throughout Eurail’s 31 countries. But there’s a big catch: high co-payments for travel on almost all of the top international high-speed trains—the ones most tourist visitors want to use. Several single-country passes also offer senior versions, typically at about 10 percent less than any-age passes. Eurail passes work best if you concentrate long-haul travel on a few days during your stay in Europe.

If, instead, you plan a lot of short trips, you might prefer a senior card that offers discounts to seniors age 60 or over on all applicable train tickets for a full year: The most popular are the U.K Senior Railcard for 33 percent off most fares, the French Advantage Senior Card for 30 percent off most fares, and the Italian Silver Card for 15-25 percent off most fares (free for travelers age 70 and over).

Outside of Europe, it’s hard to find other senior discounts. The most popular railpass outside of Europe is Japan Rail Pass, which doesn’t offer any senior deals.

Tour and Cruise Provider: Collette via AARP

The AARP deal with Collette Travel features discounts of $50 to $100 per person on most tours and river cruises , and discounts up to $450 person on some sale deals. Colleette provides good value overall for its many destinations, so the discount makes it even better.

Public Transit: Philadelphia and Pittsburgh

Seniors age 65 and over travel free in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh—a deal that’s really hard to beat. Most large public transit systems throughout the U.S. offer senior fares, typically about half off. Senior discounts typically apply to multi-ride and all-day pass tickets as well as single ride. Some systems require that you show a Medicare card or increasingly, a special senior ID. Some allow you to purchase online; others require that you show up at a local office. (Very few cities outside the U.S. offer similar senior deals.)

Best Travel Brands for Seniors Overall:

Not all the best senior deals are discounts: Some outfits tailor their products and services to the needs of senior travelers without actually discounting any prices.

  Road Scholar and Grand Circle, for Packaged Tours

Formerly known as Elderhostel, Road Scholar excels at offering seniors an unbeatable combination of outstanding travel experiences with continuing education, and at a good value. It focuses on travelers age 55 and over, offering thousands of tour options designed for senior travelers in more than 90 countries. Tours of varying physical requirements are offered, from mild to rugged. Road Scholar does best with tours in the U.S. Its overseas tours and cruises, although excellent, typically do not offer quite as good values as its domestic offerings. Even so, Road Scholar is hard to beat for any senior who wants to broaden his or her horizons through travel.

If you’re looking for a more conventional tour, consider Grand Circle Travel , a tour company that focuses on travelers age 50 or over. Tours are paced for seniors; they’re offered worldwide, from the U.S. to Antarctica to Wales. Grand Circle also features no-cost or low-cost single supplements to serve the ever-increasing demand from seniors who travel solo.

Viking for River and Ocean Cruises

I agree with SmarterTravel sister site Cruise Critic ’s judgement that the best cruise line for seniors is Viking Cruises . Viking targets “well-traveled adults 50 years of age and older.” River cruises are generally more interesting experience to seniors than the mass-market Caribbean, Mexican, or Mediterranean cruises.

Set on an ocean cruise? Cruise Critic also favors several ocean cruise lines, the best of which include such luxury-level outfits as Oceana, Regent Seven Seas, and Silverseas. They’re clearly great for seniors—but expensive. Cruise Critic does not include any of the three giant mass-market lines—Carnival, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean—in its “best for seniors” compilation, but it does include two notch-above cruise lines, Celebrity and Holland-America.

Buying a Railcard for those over 60, including elderly and pensioners, means getting 1/3 off train tickets.

If you pick the three-year card for £70, you save £20 right away instead of going year by year.

Additionally, cardholders save an average of £98 annually, according to statistics.

Below are examples of trips where the over 60s Railcard offers discounts (as of 2024):

For those considering multiple train journeys within a year, investing in an Over 60s Railcard typically proves to be a wise financial decision. Let's look at the savings it offers on specific routes as of 2024, illustrating how quickly the railcard can pay for itself:

  • From London Euston to Liverpool Central: Normally, a ticket costs £76.30, but with the railcard, it's only £50.35. That's a saving of £25.95 per trip, allowing you to recoup the cost of the railcard in about one journey .
  • London Kings Cross to Edinburgh: A ticket for this journey without a railcard is £62.90, whereas railcard holders pay £41.50, saving £21.40 each time. This means railcard fare can be covered within just 2 trips .
  • London Euston to Glasgow Central: The standard fare stands at £125.00, but railcard users enjoy a reduced rate of £82.50, pocketing £42.50 in savings for each journey. This substantial discount means the railcard pays for itself after just one trip .

Eligibility of Railcards for Elderly over 60s

The Senior Railcard, tailored for elderly and pensioners aged 60 and above, provides a way to save on a wide range of ticket prices, from Standard to First Class Advance fares. This card, which is valid for one year at £30 or three years for £70 from the purchase date, allows elderly passengers to travel more affordably. It is usable anytime outside of morning peak hours on weekdays in specific areas, and without any restrictions on weekends and public holidays.

  • Substantial Savings: Enjoy a 1/3 discount on most train fares across Great Britain, with an average annual saving of £98.
  • Cheaper 3-Year Membership: Opt for a 1-year Railcard for £30 or a 3-year membership for £70, saving £20 instantly.
  • Travel Flexibility: The Railcard is valid during both peak and off-peak times, catering to the needs of commuters, weekend explorers, and holidaymakers alike.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Discounts apply to all standard and first-class advance fares across the National Rail Network, offering wide-ranging benefits.

Disadvantages of over 60s railcard

  • Morning Peak Times Limitation: There are restrictions on using the railcard before 10am from Monday to Friday, mainly aimed at reducing congestion during peak travel times. This limitation is particularly within the London and South East Network Railcard area.
  • Eurostar Services: Senior Railcards do not apply to Eurostar services, limiting international travel options through this rail service.
  • Season Tickets: You cannot use a Senior Railcard to purchase season tickets, which may affect those looking for long-term travel savings.

7 Best Travel Discounts for Retirees

R etirement opens up a world of possibilities, and what better way to seize the moment than by embarking on new travel adventures ? In this comprehensive guide, we uncover the best travel discounts exclusively tailored for retirees.

Read: 10 Safest Places To Retire in Asia for Less Than $2K a Month

Find Out: 3 Ways To Recession-Proof Your Retirement

From discounted airfares and accommodations to special tours and experiences, these offers ensure that your golden years are filled with memorable journeys without putting a strain on your budget. Get ready to explore the world while taking advantage of the perks that come with your well-deserved retirement .

Kyle Kroeger, the founder & CEO of ViaTravelers , pointed out that many major airlines offer reduced fares for senior citizens. Some carriers provide discounted tickets for individuals over 60 years old, while others stipulate a minimum age of 65.

American Airlines, Southwest, British Airways, Delta, and United are among the airlines that provide senior discounts. These fares are subject to availability and can vary based on the route and season. But they’re an excellent option for retirees looking for a deal.

It’s important to directly contact each airline to clarify their age criteria and discount offerings, as these terms can differ between companies. Additionally, certain airlines extend discounts to members of AARP programs, so remember to ask about that when you book.

First Year of Retirement: 7 Money Moves You Absolutely Must Make

Kroeger said another great way to experience the sights and sounds of a new place without spending too much money is by taking the train. “Amtrak offers 10% off for those over 65, so be sure to take advantage of this offer if you’re planning a long-distance journey,” he said. Again, be sure to call and check age requirements and other restrictions before booking.

Car Rentals

Kroeger shared that car rental companies such as Hertz extend discounts to seniors aged 65 and above. For example, If you’re an AARP member, you can get as much as a 25% discount on Alamo car rentals. Just a heads up: If over 75, certain companies might not permit car rentals. This is an important consideration to bear in mind while exploring car rental choices.

Attraction Admission

Many attractions, such as museums and amusement parks, offer discounted admission for seniors. Some even offer free entry, said Kroeger.

Numerous attractions extend senior discounts as a gesture of appreciation for older visitors. Museums and art galleries often offer reduced admission fees, granting seniors the chance to engage with cultural treasures. National parks open their doors with discounted entrance fees for those aged 62 and above, facilitating exploration of natural wonders and historical sites. Zoos and aquariums also join in by providing seniors with the opportunity to encounter wildlife at a reduced cost. Also, cruise lines and amusement parks often offer senior discounts. Public transportation in various cities accommodates seniors with reduced fares, letting them explore urban areas easily. From movie theaters to restaurants, fitness centers to golf courses, the spectrum of senior discounts spans diverse venues, encouraging older individuals to embark on enriching adventures.

Be sure to call ahead or check websites for age restrictions and other policies before visiting any attraction.

National Park Passes

According to Daniel Morris, the founder of My Caring Plan, seniors are eligible for discounts on National Park Passes. The U.S. National Parks present a lifetime pass tailored for seniors, aptly named the Senior Pass. Priced at only $80, this pass bestows access to over 2,000 federal recreation sites. Beyond its main advantage of the park entrance, the Senior Pass frequently encompasses discounts on select amenity fees such as camping, swimming, boat launching, and guided tours.

Many hotels offer discounts for seniors. Morris shared some popular ones, including La Quinta. The national chain has a delightful offer in store for retirees on the move. AARP members can anticipate saving approximately 10% at most of their locations. The added bonus of their pet-friendly policy makes La Quinta a favorite among senior travelers who can now bring their beloved furry companions along for the journey. Another great one is Hilton Hotels & Resorts, a widely recognized name, that extends an appealing deal to AARP members. With their extensive global presence, retirees have a multitude of destinations to explore, all while enjoying a discount of up to 10%.

Wherever you plan on staying, make sure to ask about senior and AARP discounts at hotels.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance discounts are commonly available for seniors. Many travel insurance providers extend these discounts, emphasizing the importance of exploring various options and policy comparisons to secure optimal coverage at a reduced rate.

General election latest: Starmer takes pop at Johnson hiding in fridge as he refuses to comment on Abbott row

At the launch of Labour's "battle bus", Sir Keir Starmer said a vote for his party was a vote for "change and hope". The Tories are also launching their campaign bus - as a new poll suggests they could be left with only 66 seats in the election next month.

By Dr Hannah Bunting, Sky News elections analyst, and Joely Santa Cruz, data journalist

The prime minister has taken a defensive approach, signalling the Conservatives' worry about being so far behind in the polls.

Sir Keir Starmer's visits show the scale of their ambition and highlight Labour's awareness of the challenge they face. They need to gain 125 seats to win the smallest possible majority.

Labour ambitious

Labour's visit to nearby Derbyshire Mid in the East Midlands shows the scale of their boldness. They need more than a 16-point swing to take the seat from the Tories, but their recent mayoral wins might mean they are feeling confident about convincing the voters here.

These stops in the Midlands show the regions to be a key battleground between the two main parties. The Conservatives had 76 MPs across the East and West, so it's crucial for their general election fortunes. The extent of Labour success here could be the difference between them being the largest party or gaining a decisive majority.

The range of seats visited by Sir Keir demonstrate just how ambitious Labour are in their targets. They aren’t shying away from places with big Conservative majorities, and kicking off their campaign in Kent tells us they think they can win in regions only Blair managed to conquer.

Labour's eyes on the prize

Eight Conservative defended seats have had the pleasure of a visit from Sir Keir Starmer, but he has also found time to venture into SNP territory in Scotland. Why? Well Labour are also taking aim at John Swinney and his party's troubles.

Every seat Labour can win off the SNP in Scotland reduces the number they need from the Tories directly in England and Wales for a majority.

The Glasgow constituencies that were once dominated by Labour are key battlegrounds. So, unsurprisingly, the Labour leader chose to head to Glasgow East. This has had significant boundary changes, resulting in an estimated 15% majority for the SNP.

Here is the full breakdown of Sir Keir Starmer's campaign visits so far:

Rishi Sunak's very first campaign stop was Erewash in the East Midlands, a seat that should be considered safe with its 22% Conservative majority, but one he clearly thinks could be vulnerable.

A Labour victory here would be at the cusp between Labour becoming the largest party in a hung parliament or taking an overall majority, if similar levels of voter swing were replicated at a national level.

The last time Labour held Erewash (which has not undergone boundary changes in this cycle) was from 1997 to 2010, under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown's leaderships.

Reform threat

In Dover and Deal - where the Conservative Natalie Elphicke defected from Con to Lab - leader Richard Tice focused on immigration. The decision of Reform's honorary president Nigel Farage not to stand as a candidate in this election was one piece of good news for the Conservatives, at least.

In total, 16 of Mr Sunak’s 18 trips were to seats that the Conservatives are defending, 11 of which are vulnerable to Labour based on current polling estimates which suggest a swing of 16 points.

But that hasn't stopped Sunak trying to defend what some might think is now beyond defensible. The most marginal seat he's visited so far is Vale of Glamorgan, where he took a trip to a brewery in Barry. Labour only requires a swing of 2.6 points to win this seat, so it seems like an optimistic majority to defend.

Lib-Dem southern front

The Liberal Democrats are closing in on several seats across the South of England. He visited four key Lib Dem targets, including Chesham and Amersham which has recently had a Liberal Democrat MP for the first time due to their  resounding 2021 by-election victory .

Here is the full breakdown of Rishi Sunak's campaign visits so far:

With the general election campaign officially under way, what better time to keep a close eye on the latest polling?

The Sky News live poll tracker - collated and updated by our Data and Forensics team - aggregates various surveys to indicate how voters feel about the different political parties.

See the latest update below - and you can read more about the methodology behind the tracker  here .

This campaign is being fought on new electoral boundaries, with many constituencies undergoing significant changes since 2019.

With just over a week of frenetic campaigning completed, read the full analysis of the approaches of the two main party leaders here:

Speaking to broadcasters after the Workers Party campaign launch, George Galloway was asked what he is hoping for.

He replied: "We're standing enough candidates that if everyone votes for them, I'll be the prime minister.

"That's a big task in a very short period of time - we're only four years old, and the party only really took off in the Rochdale by-election.

"And yet, we've managed to find all these hundreds of candidates."

The goal, he said, is "to persuade the maximum number of people to vote for our policies of peace, equality, justice, an end to the slaughter in Gaza, and a new direction for Britain".

Asked what success looks like, Mr Galloway said he wants "many" MPs, and would be "extremely disappointed if it's not in double figures".

He said if they get 200,000 votes or more, they would qualify for state financial support, table motions in the Commons, initiate debates, and more, which would be crucial for them.

Mr Galloway added that it would be important "especially if Keir Starmer is the prime minister" because he would be "the leader of the real opposition".

He said he is prepared to have no MPs, saying that if they get hundreds of thousands of votes at this election, they would "still regard 2024 as being the year of our breakthrough".

But he also said that it would be "an indictment of the electoral system", but he added: "I really don't think that hypothetical is going to come to pass."

On 12 June, Sky News will host an election leaders' event in Grimsby - a key marginal seat and one of our Target Towns this election year.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and the Conservative leader Rishi Sunak have been invited to attend, and we are looking for a live audience to join us on the night.

If you would like to be part of this studio audience, and be given the opportunity to ask a question to one of the party leaders, please complete the short questionnaire in this link .

The leader of the Workers Party of Britain, George Galloway, has addressed party supporters at their election campaign launch in Ashton-under-Lyne.

Here are the key points of what he said (this post was updated live):

  • Mr Galloway opens by saying: "They [the Tories] thought they were pulling a surprise election. Well, it may have been a surprise to some, but not to us - we have been on a permanent election footing";
  • Their campaign, Mr Galloway declares, has "started exceptionally well, while Keir Starmer's campaign has blown up in his face";
  • He labels the Labour leader a "silent assassin" for an alleged cull of left-wing candidates;
  • Continuing his attack on Sir Keir Starmer, Mr Galloway claims that Sir Iain Duncan Smith had already packed his bags when Faiza Shaheen was removed as the Labour challenger in Chingford and Woodford Green;
  • Moving back to Sir Keir, he claims Diane Abbott was allegedly going to be barred as a Labour candidate because she was an "outspoken supporter of the Palestinian people", and says of the Labour leadership: "You cannot believe a word they say";
  • He then moves on to Rishi Sunak, who he claims uses "elevated heels" because he is so small;
  • "I could not tell you which is the lesser of the two evils - Keir Starmer or Rishi Sunak. They're both equally evil to me";
  • He moves back to the Labour leader again, claiming that his "biggest problem is that he has supported the worst genocidal massacre seen on Earth since 1945";
  • He backs independent candidates like Jeremy Corbyn, in addition to his own candidates, and adds that the public does not like either Sir Keir or Mr Sunak;
  • He claims that he is a candidate for PM, attacks ITV for not including him in their debate on Tuesday, and says he is going to take legal action against the broadcaster and Ofcom in order to be included.

The Workers Party of Britain are launching their election campaign in Ashton-under-Lyne today.

Aroma Hassan, the party's candidate for the constituency - who is running against Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner - is first to speak.

She says she "believes in being the change I want to see".

Ms Hassan hits out at Labour and the Conservatives, saying that "term after term, we're promised things" and that they "dance around pretending they're different parties but we see them".

She also takes aim at "the media" and "the establishment".

Here is the full list of candidates contesting the seat:

  • Dominic FT Hardwick, Liberal Democrats;
  • Aroma Hassan, Workers Party of Britain;
  • Lee Alan Huntbach, Green Party;
  • Angela Rayner, Labour Party.

The pop band behind New Labour's 1997 anthem Things Can Only Get Better has banned Sir Keir Starmer from using the song in the election.

D:Ream's founding members Alan Mackenzie and Peter Cunnah said they were dismayed to hear their number one hit play through a loudspeaker as Rishi Sunak announced he was calling a general election on 4 July.

The pair told LBC their first thought was: "Not again."

"The fact that it's gone back to a political thing, I find disturbing. I was thinking, can we get on with our lives? But now it's come back," Cunnah said, speaking from his recording studio at home in Donegal.

You can read more from Sky News here:

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak today said his children would probably not describe him as a Taylor Swift fan, ahead of the popstar's tour of the UK.

He told journalists on the campaign trail in Redcar: "My kids would not probably describe me as a Swiftie.

"I think they would be not OK with that description.

"Their level of fandom is considerably more than mine and I'm not sure I pass the threshold in their eyes."

Mr Sunak declined to say which Taylor Swift song "best describes (his) current position in the polls", when asked by The Sunday Times.

The prime minister replied: "My encyclopaedic knowledge of Taylor Swift is probably not sufficient to deal with that, but what I can tell you is that the only poll that I'm focused on is the one on 4 July.

"Has she got a song about 4 July? I don't know, I'll have to go and check the canon."
