Railbike excursions

a man and woman on a railbike on tracks

What’s the fuss about?

This concept has existed roughly since the 1850s, when maintenance workers on railroads used handcars and railbikes to get from point A to point B.  Something had to be used to carry the crew and materials for track inspections and/or repairs. In 1877, a Michigan farmer named George Sheffield was accredited for inventing the first three-wheeled railroad velocipede — a handcar that used a combination of hand and foot power to propel forward (“push-pull fashion”).

With many variations of this today, railbikes are primarily used for pleasure. The construction of each railbike may differ — some are 2-seaters, others 4 — and can come with electric assist. Essentially, the railbike may offer you a different perspective of the railroad — in essence you become the train. You chug along at a speed that is comfortable for you, while taking in the beautiful scenery along your chosen destination. It’s a great opportunity to relax, try something different, and take some spectacular photos.

Reserving your spot

With several groups of people out on a railroad at any given time, it’s not meant to be a race. The idea is to enjoy your time out on the tracks. Tailgating is not preferred. Each operation will have its own set of rules that you must follow. So don’t just plan on showing up the day of without a reservation and in flip flops — it’s not going to happen.

It’s like riding a bike

These “hands free,” people-powered rail vehicles are gaining momentum all over the United States on a variety of railroads, so here’s a guide to help you find one near you.

Note: Cancellations may occur if weather conditions are dangerous. Riders may be turned away if rules are not observed. Weight/height/age restrictions may be present. If children are allowed to ride, but cannot reach the pedals, a car seat or baby sling may be advised.

Take a Tracks and Yaks Ride in Maryland! ★★★★★

Great fun. We took the Queen City Combo, using the pedal cars downhill and the scenic railroad back to Frostburg. We might go do it again sometime.

This was a beautiful ride! Coasted downhill for 10 miles. Absolutely beautiful scenery. Such a nice way to see the surroundings. The ride stops at one point, and a staff member gives a brief history of the town below. Was very interesting.

I would highly recommend this trip! Easy and fun for all ages. Staff was friendly and answered all questions. We took the train back after the 15 mile downhill pedal through the scenic valley. Train ride was nice also! Snacks were available for purchase too which was an added bonus.

Came here with a friend and was not disappointed. They were very well organized and it was a beautiful (mostly) downhill scenic ride. 15 miles seemed long, but it goes by quickly and I didn't tire out on the few times pedaling was necessary. Took the steam engine back up and explored the town a little. Cute. May bring the kids back and do it in the fall.

We contacted Tracks and Yaks and purchased our Maryland Scenic Railroad ticket and rented bicycles for the ride from Frostburg back to Cumberland. I wanted to do this for quite sometime, and I’m so glad we did it. It was such a great ride on the train, and an easy ride back down to Cumberland. It was a wonderful day.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Chevron down What is a railbike?

Nickel Plate Express utilizes USA built, high quality railbikes from Rail Gliders located in Pennsylvania. These family-friendly, pedal powered bikes are specially designed to sit on the rails of the tracks. Each bike seats up to 4 passengers. Railbikes offer the perfect activity for guests of all ages and allow passengers the opportunity to see the rail line from an entire new perspective.

  • Chevron down Who can ride railbikes?

Our railbikes are versatile and easy to ride for people of all ages and abilities. Intended to welcome everyone from small children to adults up to 6’4″, the Rail Glider’s seats are infinitely adjustable, even while sitting in them. A recommended weight limit of 250lbs per rider is suggested.

  • Chevron down Can children ride the railbikes?

Yes! Children are welcome to ride the railbikes with appropriate adult guidance. We do ask that groups with children under the age of 16 be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All riders must be secured safely in a seat of their own. Harnesses will be available for toddlers. Infants under the age of 2 may ride strapped securely to an adult in an infant carrier.

  • Chevron down How do the tours work?

All tours commence with the entire group departing alongside the tour guide. Participants disperse along the trail, maintaining a distance of up to 500 feet between individuals ahead and behind. This arrangement affords each group the opportunity to enjoy the open-air environment and the enchantment of the railroad at their preferred speed and in their individual space.

  • Chevron down Who else will be on the tracks?

Nickel Plate Express Railbikes will have total occupancy of the rail line during tours. No other tour will operate at the same time and the train will not be running. Our staff coordinates daily to ensure a track bulletin is released and all parties are aware of the schedule for both railbikes and the train operations.

  • Chevron down What is your weather policy?

Nickel Plate Express Railbikes operate in various weather conditions, including rain or shine, as long as safety is ensured. Our railbike tours proceed in light to moderately inclement weather, excluding heavy rain expected to persist or impending threatening weather. We diligently assess the radar before each tour, and in the event of anticipated continuous downpour or adverse weather conditions, we may opt to cancel or delay departure until conditions improve. Due to the unpredictable nature of thunderstorms, a decision to cancel a tour for this reason is typically made approximately 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Should the tour be cancelled for weather related issues, you will be offered a full refund. Customers who cancel due to weather are subject to our cancellation policy. Please be mindful when booking that railbikes are an outdoor activity and you will be exposed to the elements including light rain, wind, heat and cool temperatures.

  • Chevron down Do I have to book ahead of time or can I just show up?

Booking ahead is strongly recommended. Space is limited and walk-in tickets are not guaranteed.

  • Chevron down Are tickets per person?

Tickets can be purchased per person or per quad bike. There is a slight discount when purchasing the entire bike. If purchasing single bike tickets, you may be seated on a bike with other passengers.

  • Chevron down How do I get back to where I parked?

Your experience is round trip and will take you back to your starting point.

  • Chevron down How long does it take?

Each trip is unique and different. Please refer to our rides for length.

  • Chevron down What should I wear?

Kindly review the weather forecast and attire yourself accordingly based on the predicted weather conditions. Since our tours take place outdoors and the railbikes are exposed to the elements, we suggest opting for comfortable and loose-fitting attire suitable for hiking or cycling. It is advisable to wear closed-toed shoes for your convenience and safety.

  • Chevron down What should I bring? Is there a place to put a bag or backpack?

We recommend passengers bring bottled water. Each bike is equipped with a small basket for bags and other items. Passengers are welcome to bring snacks along with them. A small lunch bag size cooler will fit in the basket. We also encourage passengers to bring sunscreen and bug spray. Larger items should be stored in your car.

  • Chevron down Is there a weight limit?

For the best experience we recommend a weight limit of 250lbs per person.

A Highly Recommended Experience! ★★★★★

We had a terrific experience at Adirondack Rail Bike Adventures. The bikes were thoroughly sanitized between uses which made us feel safe. The employees were friendly and helpful from check-in until our ride was complete. The 6 mile ride was just the right length for our family, it was just over 1.5 hours. There is a break at the halfway mark to stretch your legs while they turn the bike around for you to return to the departure station. I have no hesitation recommending Adirondack Rail Bike!

Very nice ride. I took the family up and it was a fun two hours. Sometimes we rode hard and sometimes we relaxed. The Adirondack mountains in the backdrop is cool. We’re already planning for a return trip.

Wasn’t sure what to expect when we booked the trip. Had a great time and enjoyed every second. Definitely got a bit of a workout. Staff was great, very pleasant and engaging even when we showed up an hour early. Fantastic experience will definitely recommend to friends and family. Hope this stays around for a long time!

If you've spent more than 5 seconds looking at the ADK rail bikes thinking "looks neat..." DO IT! It IS neat. Beautiful, interesting, and fun! Gets the blood pumping without being overly exertive. 10/10 will do again.

The ease of use, the ability to get out into parts of the DAKs that can only be seen from the railroad right of way. It's quiet and the beauty of the region is really spectacular.

We rode from Thendara to Carter station in just the 3rd week of operation. We had 9 people in our party ranging in age from 19 mos to 71 yrs. Every single one of us had a blast. The gorgeous views and a unique way of seeing them are unmatched. The staff were friendly and went above and beyond to make sure we had a terrific time. We will be coming back for sure. Thank you for bringing this experience closer to home!

Rail bike tours are the soft adventure trend for anyone who loves the nostalgia of train travel

Riding the rails isn't just for wayward vagabonds. these rail bike tours are an exciting way to see the world..

Rail Explorers rail bikes lined up on a train track with the sunrise in the background.

“Do you even rail bike, bro?” You’ll probably be asked this question dozens of times this summer by anyone from your most extreme adrenalin-addicted friends to your grandmother’s sweet old knitting buddies. That’s because the newest bucket-list adventure activity on Earth is beloved by adventure seekers of all ages.

Rail Explorers USA

Flekkefjordbanen, revolution rail co., pudding creek railbikes.

Put simply, rail bike tours involve riding pedal-powered (and sometimes even electric) machines along abandoned or disused railroad tracks that no longer carry train traffic. Rail bike tours are relatively new over the last few years, and they’re expanding all over the world, making use of defunct rail lines that traverse scenic natural areas . Here’s a closer look at the best rail bike tour operators and where to find them.

Multiple U.S. Locations

Rail Explorers rail bikes lined up on a train track with the sunrise in the background.

This company provides rail bike tours in four U.S. locations, including the Catskill Mountains , Rhode Island, and Boone, Iowa. With scenic views throughout the relaxed excursion, these trips are perfect for those looking to get off the beaten path and check out each region in a new and exciting way.

The eight-mile roundtrip Catskills tour travels for about 2.5 hours along the historic Ulster and Delaware Railroads, alongside Esopus Creek through the woods. Bring a snack and a drink for lunch at the creekside turnaround.

The Rhode Island trip offers a variety of regular and themed tours, including the most popular: “The Northern Ramble” and “The Southern Circuit.” The Ramble takes guests on a six-mile jaunt from Portsmouth to the Sakonnet River. It’s a one-way trip with a return via shuttle bus — perfect for anyone looking for a more leisurely rail ride. The Circuit trip is six miles roundtrip and allows guests to eat lunch at a private waterfront picnic area.

At every location, Rail Explorers USA offers two types of “Explorer” vehicles: a tandem for two people or a quad for up to four people. Both are safe, well-designed, and easy to use.

Flekkefjord, Norway

Who says southern Norway doesn’t have some of the best rail biking on Earth? Well … no one, really. But if you’re in the Flekkefjord area and looking for stunning nature scenes, architectural wonders, and some leg-pumping, self-propelled, train-inspired action, the rail-biking tour at Flekkefjordbanen is not to be missed.

This railway line operated for most of the 20th century, connecting Flekkefjord to Sørlandsbanen. Though the last journey made by the Flekkefjordbanen train was in 1990, visitors and locals alike can once again tour this magical area by rail — by rail bike .

Local Norwegians are intent on preserving the railroad and turning it into a living museum. Example A: The slogan, which goes “cultural salvation through active use.” Rail biking is the perfect way to put that slogan into action. An activity suitable for old and young alike, the track takes you through a beautiful natural landscape and no less than 17 tunnels. There are tours every day in the summer.

revolution rail co 1 rail bike

The Adirondacks-based Revolution Rail Co. started with its initial rail bike tour leading riders on a six-mile adventure through the forest along the Hudson River in New York. One of the highlights of this fairly flat-terrain ride is crossing a trestle bridge over the Hudson (think Stand By Me sans train). At the turnaround point, riders can refuel with a snack and a drink while the bikes are readied for the return trip.

This trip will truly be a unique exploration for most, considering this section of the Adirondacks has never seen passenger traffic before. Tours run throughout each day, and there is no minimum age requirement, meaning even baby Timmy can be a part of the fun. The company has since expanded beyond this one tour to multiple rail biking locations in New Jersey, Colorado, and even coastal Maine.

Fort Bragg, California

The East Coast may have popularized rail bike tours, but “The Other Coast” is picking up on the trend. Beginning in Fort Bragg, Pudding Creek Railbikes takes riders on a tour of California’s beautiful Mendocino County, over wooden trestle bridges and past the ancient redwood trees of the state’s famous Redwood Route. It’s an area rich in wildlife, so nature lovers can keep an eye out for osprey, blue herons, deer, turtles, and even the occasional bear.

What truly sets this rail bike tour apart, however, is that each bike is electric , which makes this the laziest — er, most leisurely — rail bike tour in the country. Just hop on and go, so you can focus on the important things, like taking pictures of birds and your kids. Plus, for an extra $30, dog owners can even take their pup along for the ride in a purpose-built rail bike “caboose.” Free bandana and doggo treat included!

Of all the challenging long-distance thru-hikes in the U.S., few are as difficult as the John Muir Trail. Though hiking trails such as the Pacific Crest Trail or the Appalachian Trail are just as beautiful, the John Muir Trail spans 211 miles through California's Sierra Nevada mountains.

Those who undertake the trek will traverse nearly 80,000 feet in elevation change and discover alpine lakes and grassy fields among the high-altitude peaks. However, the hike offers few opportunities for resupply stops, which means most thru-hikers must be self-sufficient and self-supported. With proper planning and preparation, anyone can tackle the John Muir Trail (JMT). Hiking the John Muir Trail

Discovering a private stretch of beach is like stumbling on a slice of paradise. And, one of the best ways to seek out your own swath of shoreline is with a beach camping trip. Offering a chance to spy migrating marine creatures, catch epic sunrises, and fall asleep to the sound of the tide, a beach campout makes for an idyllic getaway any time of year. In the south, ocean temperatures are still warm enough for swimming well into the fall, and beaches situated along the Atlantic Flyway offer the chance to admire masses of migrating waterfowl during the fall and winter.

While on the other side of the country, beach campers have the opportunity to spot migrating gray whales bound for the warm waters around Baja during the fall and winter. The best places to visit throughout the U.S. are a number of state and national parks, national seashores, and wilderness areas that offer opportunities for beach campers to snag a spectacular spot in the sand. Keep reading to find out where the best beaches for camping are located. Olympic National Park Washington state

Nothing can ruin a beach day quite like getting caught (or injured, or worse) in a rip current. Every guy should know how to spot and escape a rip current, whether you’re swimming at a protected beach manned by a Baywatch team or exploring an uncharted cove. What is a rip current?

Rip currents are strong, narrow channels of water that flow rapidly away from the shore at ocean beaches. They can be dangerous for swimmers because they can pull even strong swimmers out to sea. Here is more detailed information on rip currents.

Take a unique trip on historic railroad tracks while experiencing some of the most beautiful scenery in the Midwest. You can now pedal your way along historic railways on a rail bike in Boone, Iowa.

Rail Explorers is partnering with The Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad to bring the first rail bike tours to the Midwest. Riders will enjoy picturesque views of the Des Moines River Valley. The railroad is a popular spot for locals and tourists.

The ride’s showstopper is the 750-foot-long, 156-doot-high “Bass Point Creek High Trestle.” You’ll pedal along the bridge and take in panoramic views of the valley and experience the thrill of crossing the creek below.

Boone, Iowa Tours

Two different tours are available in Boone. The Scenic Valley Trail is a 2-hour, 12.5-mile round trip from open farmland to the Des Moines River. You’ll cross the Bass Creek High Trestle and the Des Moines River Bridge. You’re encouraged to bring a drink and a snack to enjoy some time at Rose’s Landing Turnaround.

The Scenic Valley Sunset is the same route but leaves in the evening so you can enjoy sunset views along your ride.

About Rail Explorers

The idea for Rail Explorers was actually born from a scene in a Korean soap opera. CEO Mary Joy Lu was watching one of her favorites and saw the rail bike being pedaled along the railroad tracks. She hopped on a plane to South Korea, and the rest is history.

Rail bikes date back to the 1850s, when maintenance workers used them to travel along the tracks. Today, there are several designs in use all over the world. There is no locomotive on the rail bikes, but they do have an electric assist motor, so they can be operated by all ages and abilities.

Rail Explorers began in July of 2015 in New York’s Adirondacks. The concept took off and now more than 350,000 people have enjoyed tours in the Adirondacks, Delaware, Rhode Island, New York’s Catskill Mountains, Cooperstown, NY, and now Boone, Iowa.

About The Boone And Scenic Valley Railroad & Museum

The Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad & Museum is Iowa’s only regularly operating tourist railroad. The trains are a division of the Iowa Railroad Historical Society. It operates on the former segment of the Fort Dodge, Des Moines & Southern Railroad between Boone and Fraser. The trains take you through the heart of the Midwest through the beautiful Des Moines River Valley. You’ll ride on 1920s-era coaches or the climate-controlled dining cars of the 1950s.
