A Day Trip to Madison

Madison is the lively capital of Wisconsin, offering a unique character that embodies everything special about Midwestern life and making it the perfect destination for a quick day trip.

A visit to the Dane County Farmers’ Market is necessary in Madison. It is America’s largest producers-only farmers’ market. You can visit its outdoor or indoor markets year-round. From April to November, you can experience the most popular Dane County Farmers’ Market on Saturday at the Square, with over 160 vendors attending every Saturday from mid-April through early November. Another outdoor market option is the Wednesday Market, which runs from April to November on Wednesdays. During the winter months, you can enjoy the Holiday Market, which takes place on select Saturdays at the Monona Terrace Community & Convention Center or the Late Winter Market on Saturdays from January to April at the Garver Feed Mill.

Head over to the Memorial Union Terrace located right on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus to take in the gorgeous views of Lake Mendota. The Memorial Union Terrace is one of the most iconic spots on the University’s campus, where you can soak up the lake views, have a bite to eat or sip on some local brews. The Memorial Union Terrace is a hub of activity and perfect for people-watching.

Explore the city by visiting the Bucky on Parade statues. Bucky on Parade was a free public art event during which artists transformed 85 life-size Bucky Badger statues throughout Madison into unique works of art. Today, several Bucky Badger statues are at permanent locations all around the city. You can find a Fancy Bucky at the Park Hotel Madison in Capitol Square.

Where to Eat

Madison offers many dining options and is known for locally sourced cuisine, rich in fresh produce, dairy and artisanal goods.

Head to Marigold Kitchen , a local farm-to-table favorite spot for breakfast. This cozy restaurant is popular amongst the locals. It offers breakfast favorites, including pancakes and farm-fresh eggs, and unique dishes such as duck confit hash, the Marigold Breakfast Burrito or chilaquiles.

Cheese lovers are in for a treat with a visit to Fromagination . In this specialty cheese shop, guests can indulge in cheese tastings led by knowledgeable staff, purchase local goods from small-scale producers and even participate in cheese events. If you visit Fromagination around lunchtime, order from the lunch menu, which includes sandwiches, fresh salads, and mac and cheese. There is even wine and beer available for purchase in the shop.

For a retro dining experience, visit Tornado Steak House, an old-school steakhouse with supper club vibes offering classic steaks, chops and seafood. Located a short walk from Capitol Square, the restaurant features a retro lounge, multi-course dinner portions and nightly specials, including Friday-night fish fry, Saturday-night prime rib dinner or Sunday-night chicken dinner.

Finish your day trip to Madison with a sweet treat from Good News Ice Cream and Cafe . Here, you can enjoy artisan homemade ice cream flavors, including Mexican hot chocolate, strawberry balsamic, or fig and honey. Good News also offers vegan options.

Can I ever say enough about Kwik Trip? I wanted the waffle breakfast sandwich this morning, and I asked if they were planning on making more. The associate promptly radioed for someone to make me the sandwich. After a very quick wait, they gave it to me and the cashier did not charge me for my coffee to due to my (again, very short) wait. Kwik Trip has the best service of any business I can think of. Clean stores, tasty & cheap food, and the best employees. Bravo to this location. You KNOW I will be back.

This is a great Kwik Trip - Convenient location right on Mineral point, friendly and helpful staff (even once when I locked my keys in the car!), decent stock of essentials, and competitive prices for gas. I typically look out for Kwik Trips when I'm out and about because I enjoy the consistency. This one doesn't disappoint!

Moved here in oct 2021 & I work from home. Going to this KT and grabbing my coffee every morning, some snacks, whatever I want they have it. Friendly people, clean, always stocked. Big fan of this KT!

It's always a pleasure going into one of these locations as they always greet you with a smile and they always have a sense of urgency! Love it! Makes me feel valued and that they truly care about not just the appearance of the store and the displays, but they also value the customer experience. I definitely utilize the Kwik Trips every time I travel! Makes for getting snacks and drinks easy with kids while I get gas. One stop shop for all your road tripping needs.

My car broke down in the Kwik Trip parking lot. An employee named Justin, let me use a gas canister from the store while a nice civilian pumped me some gas. Justin waited while I called a tow truck. He was seriously the nicest employee I have had the pleasure of meeting at Kwik Trip. This guy deserves a shout-out. Thank you Justin!!

I just want to start by saying that any time I visit this Kwik Trip, the staff are incredibly friendly and personable. Today, my boyfriend and I stopped here to fill up our low tires, only to find that one of them had gone completely flat. So, we set out to change our tire (never having done this before) - it was going fine until we couldn't figure out how to remove the security lug nut. A friendly Kwik Trip technician (Mitch, who is known around the Madison area Kwik Trips) spotted us struggling, and spent over 25 minutes helping us change the tire. He took time out of his day to help out two strangers during a pandemic...something I wouldn't have expected out of anyone. He was incredibly kind and humble. Although we couldn't buy him anything since he was on the job, I just wanted to praise his work ethic and willingness to go above and beyond. This man deserves a raise. :)

Kwik Trip Announces $150 Million Expansion Project

MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Kwik Trip announces a 150-million-dollar expansion project.

The company announced on Monday it will be making improvements at its central bakery and dairy in La Crosse, building a new facility in Onalaska, and creating a new satellite distribution center.

Company president Scott Zeitlow says expansion for Kwik Trip is good for the communities it serves.

Kwik Trip will be getting $15 million in grants from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation as part of the expansion.
