I can get your travel book published. Here’s how…
Summersdale senior editor Debbie Chapman gives you the inside scoop on what book publishers are looking for – and what you need to do to get your travel memoir on the shelves
OK. Let’s start with a reality check. How many submissions would Summersdale get in a year?
Most weeks I receive about ten new travel submissions, but sometimes it’s lots higher than that – people seem more eager to read and write travel books in the summer than the gloomy winter months.
How many books would you publish a year?
We publish up to around five new travel titles most years, plus a couple of reissues of beloved older titles, and a handful of travel gift books (non-narrative books on travel such as The Camper’s Survival Guide or Travel Hacks ).
What do you look for?
I’m looking for travel writing that grabs you right from the start – the travels can take place anywhere around the world and be on any mode of transport: planes, trains, mopeds, bicycles, kayaks, or your own two feet (or anything in-between) but the story has to be unique. I want to read something I’ve never read before, something exciting and entertaining. The taste for gentle ‘moving abroad’ travel writing has dwindled in recent years (everywhere has been so well catered for by now), so unless it’s really unique we’re looking for more unusual, attention-grabbing adventures rather than ‘my escapades renovating a house in France’.
Ideally, we’re also looking for authors who have an existing platform (typically a social media account with a high number of followers, but it could also be a good track record of motivational speaking gigs or a regular column in a relevant publication, for instance) – not only because it shows there is an appetite there for your story, but also because it shows you are good at engaging with readers and writing content they will enjoy, you know who your target audience is and shows your enthusiasm for the topic. Think of gaining a large Twitter or YouTube following as testament to the fact that people will want to read about your travels, and that you’re being pro-active in generating interest and discussion in your field.
I’m guessing the aspiring author has to display some kind of writing skill as well?
Absolutely. You needn’t be the most lyrical or descriptive writer in the world, as long as you know how to tell your story in a gripping way. Some writers focus on drawing out the humour or drama in their story, for others it’s the exhilarating emotions and insights that come with an epic adventure, and sometimes it’s beautiful descriptive prose that really transports the reader. All our books go through a careful and thorough structural edit stage, though, which will help the author to craft their story or bring out some more of those important elements in their writing, so really the main thing is that you make your first readers (me!) want to keep reading.
What are some of the ‘rookie’ mistakes people make?
A lot of the manuscripts I receive read like someone’s private diary, listing every single detail and observation the writer had and always in chronological order, without skipping anything. Sometimes in their submission an author will even say ‘I’ve just sent you my diary because my friend read it and said it was interesting’. A diary and a narrative work of non-fiction are very different things – not everything you put in your personal diary will be of interest, and most of the time diary-format books end up being dry or dull unless they’re heavily edited.
A lot of the time people will send their first draft, too. I understand it’s exciting to have finished your manuscript at last, and you want to get that publishing deal straight away, but you shouldn’t ever send out a first draft manuscript to publishers – you should be happy that you’ve sculpted your book into its best possible shape before you send it out into the world. It could just be a second draft, but some established authors will redraft multiple times before they’re happy.
The story needs to be well-structured, with a plot that progresses and keeps the reader interested, rounded characters and character development, and a good balance of description, dialogue and action. If something isn’t of interest to a reader who doesn’t know you and isn’t essential to the story, cut it: most of the time we don’t need to know about your flight or that day that you just wandered around the town. Only tell us things a reader will find interesting, and tell those bits well.
Are some areas of the world more popular than others?
To be blunt, yes. While there are undoubtedly many readers who would love to read a book about Togo or Krygyzstan, it’s very hard for us to sell a book set in those places – there’s just not a big enough market for us to tap into, so unless you are a big name in travel writing unfortunately the more obscure destinations aren’t going to make commercially viable prospects for us.
It’s also tricky to sell books set in lots of different countries, unless there’s a strong theme tying them together (such as rail travel, or food). This often simply boils down to booksellers not knowing where to physically place a book that’s set ‘everywhere’. Most people who buy travel books are looking for a book on a certain country or area, so while your multi-year backpacking trip might have taken you to a really diverse and fascinating set of countries from India to Romania to Paraguay, it means that it won’t be placed on the ‘Europe’ shelf or the ‘South East Asia’ shelf in the travel writing section of bookshops and won’t pop up first in online searches for ‘books set in X’.
Writing about a popular tourist spot can have its drawbacks, too, though – I receive at least one submission a week about the Camino de Santiago. Yes, lots of people do the walk, and lots of people have written and self-published books on it, but that just makes it even harder for us to sell – how will you stand out from the crowd, and why should people read about your journey above anyone else’s? So really it’s just about hitting the right balance. For instance, I hardly ever receive submissions based in Germany or Spain, but there is a huge amount of interest in those countries for tourists. It’s a niche, but a large, popular niche – add an element like a bike ride or a cross-country first, and you have a perfect pitch.
Should authors chase trends? Or should they just stick to what they’re passionate about?
It’s all very well thinking ‘I know Summersdale are looking for a book on Germany, so I’ll write something based there’, but if you’re not already interested in that country and don’t have any real reason to write about it, it’s not going to make a very good book, and it will show. You have to be passionate and – if possible – have some expertise or background knowledge on the location or mode of transport that means you’re the perfect person to write that particular book. And even if you do think your personal interests are very niche, if you’re passionate enough about it and can convince me that there’s a reason to publish your book, you never know, we may take a punt (yes, even on Kyrgyzstan ).

How do you like to receive submissions?
By email, please, following the submissions guidelines on our website. All publishers vary in what they’d like to see at the outset, but personally I’d like to see the first couple of chapters (up to about 20,000 words) so I can get my teeth into it and get a sense of your writing style. Some people send chapters from further in, saying ‘this is where it gets really exciting’ or ‘you should read this chapter because it’s the best’, but my response is always: why isn’t your opening chapter exciting? Why isn’t your opening chapter the best? I want to know how the story starts and how the journey progresses, and that should be the most exciting part for the reader too to make them want to carry on reading.
I’m guessing you want stories about trips the author has already done, not ones they are planning to do.
With a couple of exceptions, yes please! How do you know if a journey is going to be exciting, how do you know you’ll even have a story to tell, until you’ve at least undertaken a significant amount of it? (If you’re mid-a-world-first bike ride or epic run and already have loads of great stories under your belt or are an established author, fine, but otherwise we are unlikely to consider a proposal for a yet-to-be-taken trip.)
With the rise of eBooks, print-on-demand and self-publishing in general, what can a publisher like Summersdale offer an aspiring author?
It’s easier than ever to self-publish your book, but it takes a LOT of work to self-publish successfully . The ease of using Amazon’s self-publishing portal also means that the competition amongst self-published books is huge – there are now hundreds of books available that vary wildly in quality, and often the only way you can judge a self-published book before you buy it is by reviews or recommendations, meaning it can be hard for customers wading through thousands of similar titles to find one that stands out. It’s tricky to get a self-published book pushed up the rankings on Amazon to save it from obscurity. Put simply, your book is at risk of being lumped in with all the thousands of poorly-written, unedited manuscripts out there unless you put in a lot of your own time and money once the book is written.
Getting a publishing deal with a company like Summersdale means not only do you have an official stamp of approval – you’ve got through the rigorous and highly selective submissions procedure and been selected as one of the chosen few who get published per year – but you also gain access to our huge amount of experience, knowledge and contacts.
We have years of experience with editing books, we know what works, and we work closely with our authors to make their books the best they can possibly be. Your book will be professionally edited, copy-edited, designed, typeset and proofread. Our sales and publicity teams will make sure your book gets the coverage and shelf space it deserves, making it available to a far wider audience than you’d be able to reach by self-publishing, and making sure people hear about your book. It means you have the best people in the business working with you and for you to promote your book.
What can a first-time author realistically expect to make from a book?
Being a writer in itself hardly ever makes anyone a millionaire. Unless you’re a huge name or have a runaway success, the reality is that you won’t be able to kick back and live off the royalties from your first book. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try: lots of our authors make a really successful and comfortable living from a combination of writing books, freelance writing, motivational speaking, blogging, or utilising any other skills they may have, meaning they earn themselves the freedom to give up the 9–5 and make money from their passions (which sometimes feels like the best prize of all).
You can also build on your successes, so while a first book may sell a modest amount, a second once you’ve built up your following and expertise may mean a big increase in sales. It all depends on how much you put in – if you’re determined and keen to put yourself out there, you can make a living from it, but the money’s not just going to start rolling in as soon as you finish your first draft.
How many copies of a book can a first-time author expect to sell?
The book market is notoriously tough to gauge anyway, and the travel-writing market specifically is shrinking, but the books that do well become really well-loved and respected and can sometimes really take off. We print small print runs and reprint often to keep up with demand, rather than starting with a huge amount that we might end up pulping. We’d normally start with around 3,000 copies and would hope to be reprinting fairly soon if the book is well received. However, sometimes a book gets off to a slow start but builds momentum over a couple of years as it gains word-of-mouth recommendations and recognition.
Finally, someone has just read this, taken on board all that you’ve said and thinks they’ve got a best-seller on their hands: how do they get in contact with you guys?
The submissions guidelines on our website provides all the details on how we like to receive book proposals. You can follow us on Twitter , Facebook and Instagram to to get an idea for the books we love, or you can follow my personal Twitter account where I talk about all things travel, and especially travel books, and where you can send me your questions or ideas. Happy writing, and good luck!

How to Get Published as a Travel Writer
By: Robin Van Auken
1: Identify Your Market
2: send a query about getting published, 3: ready to go let’s break it down, recommended reading.
So you want to break into travel writing—maybe by penning your own book. If you’ve already written a manuscript, chances are you’re looking for agent representation to help you learn how you can get published. As an editor and literary consultant , I’ve had the opportunity to read more than a thousand book proposals. Most, I’m sad to report, were inadequate because the author didn’t follow a few, very simple guidelines. Here are three steps to help you along the road of getting published.
Before you complete your masterpiece of travel writing and send it off to publishers, make sure you’re able to distinguish it from other books on the same subject. Identify your audience and determine the marketability of the finished book—these are the most important questions agents and publishers will ask, and it will impress them that you’ve done your homework.
Before even inquiring, determine how many books on the same subject are currently available. Look at large booksellers online—not only will they provide a list of publications on the same topic, but they often will include a synopsis and the book’s audience as well. Your manuscript needs to stand out, not duplicate what’s already available.
Agents and publishers also want to know your ideas for publicity and promotion of your book, including how you intend to reach your target market, and any helpful contacts you may have. When you’re ready to go, draft a professional query letter and (short) synopsis, and edit your manuscript.
It’s common to assume—mistakenly—that agents and publishers will respond at their own expense. When sending your query letter, include a self-addressed, stamped envelope so companies can acknowledge receipt of your proposal. If you’d like to have your material returned, be sure to send an envelope that is large enough and has enough postage for them to mail back to you.
Some companies accept e-mail submissions as well; be sure to check their website or call them directly to find their preferred query format. Because of the threat of viruses, however, they usually won’t open messages with documents attached—rather, many publishers prefer to read e-mail queries that include a short resume, a synopsis, and sample chapters that have been copied and pasted into the body text.
If you are submitting a book proposal by e-mail, advise the company in your cover letter of the type of word processing program and version of that program that you used. Converting your text to plain text format with no hard returns will make it easiest to read via email. And remember, it’s not a good idea to send complete manuscripts by e-mail unless they are requested.
Overemployment: What It Is, How to Be Overemployed, and How It Can Accelerate Your Path to Financial Freedom
Overemployment is the act of working two remote full-time jobs to earn extra income and reach financial freedom. More than simply having a side hustle, being overemployed means having two or more full-time jobs that offer salary and benefits. While overemployment may sound difficult and potentially hazardous if caught, the fact is any remote worker can do it successfully with the right approach and commitment.
Read the Guide
Now that you have some background, use this question and answer list to submit a solid query to your potential publisher. Best of luck!
How Your Book Differs From Others:
- What is your book about?
- What prompted you to write it?
- Why is your book is needed by others?
- What are its unique features?
Identify Your Audience:
- Who is your target audience?
- What is your level of expertise in your subject area?
- How should your book be used?
- Why should your audience buy this book and share it with their friends?
Beat Your Competition To Market:
- Can you list three to four books that compete with yours?
- How do they compare to your book in length, spectrum, format, and visual appeal?
- Are there any that seem remotely comparable?
- What are the differences between your approaches?
- Have you gathered a local, regional, state and national media contact list?
- Have you built a website for your book—or contracted someone else who can?
- Do you have access to any authors who may provide a “blurb” for your book?
- Did you include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your query?
- Did you include enough postage for the return of your manuscript (if you want it back)?
Electronic Submissions:
- Does your preferred publisher accept email queries and proposals?
- Have you customized each query—rather than spamming hundreds of agents or publishers at a time?
- Did you include a short query, biography, synopsis, and first three chapters of your book?
- Did you make sure not to send any of the above as an attachment?
- If you are asked to send an attachment, did you specify the software used?

You wrote a book, and now it’s time to find a book publisher…
Where do you start? With the big 5 publishers? With an indie publisher? What about self-publishing?
If you're an author looking to get your book out into the world, it's natural that you might have some questions about book publishers.
The good news is that you have a ton of options when it comes to book publishing companies.
The bad news is that there are so many options in today’s publishing world, it can be difficult to choose your path .
We’ve gathered together everything you need to decide if a book publisher is the right option for your next manuscript.
In addition, we’ll be addressing common questions that pop up when considering traditional publishing vs self-publishing a book, such as…
Is a traditional book publisher still the best way to find an audience for your writing? Are there any downsides to publishers that you should know about? And what about alternatives to the traditional publishing model?
While a traditional publisher might have a certain level of prestige and credibility associated with it, there are also plenty of drawbacks that might not be obvious at first glance.
Don’t blindly assume that the traditional publishing model is the right way forward. Instead, read on to get a full understanding of what traditional publishing entails, why it might not be the best option for your book, and alternative pathways to pursue instead.
Here’s what we’ll cover in this guide to book publishers:

Are You Ready to Publish Your Book?
What is a book publisher .
A book publisher is a company that transforms an author’s manuscript into an actual book, including print and eBooks.
Book publishers can either buy or commission an author’s written work, and oversee the book publication process.
In today's publishing industry, there are several ways to become an author – and whether you're writing a nonfiction book or learning how to write a novel , publishing a book is no longer a far-off dream.
The definition of a book publisher can vary depending on the type of publishing:
- In traditional publishing , the book publisher often owns the rights to an author’s work, and completely oversees the book production process.
- In hybrid publishing , the book publisher often provides publishing services to the author, such as editing, cover design, book printing, and more.
- In self-publishing , the author is the one that is considered the book publisher. However, self-published authors hire professionals for publishing services, such as editing, cover design, printing, and more.
Before the self-publishing revolution opened up access to the world of books, there were only two ways to get your writing out there.
The first way was to get noticed by a traditional publisher . This required authors to get their book on the radar of the elitist companies that used to dictate what did or did not make it to market.
The second was known as vanity publishing . This involved authors paying money upfront to get their book printed.
Of the two, traditional publishing was seen as the only respectable option. If you had your book picked up by a traditional publisher, you’d truly made it as an author. At least, that’s what many people thought.
But was traditional publishing all it was made out to be? When you dig deeper into the business model of an old-school publisher, you soon see it's flawed.
When a traditional publisher chooses to publish an author’s work, they are taking on a lot of risk. How so? First, the author is paid an advance. This is an amount of money paid by a publisher to an author in exchange for the right to publish their book. Second, the publisher shoulders all the costs of production and publicity. The cost of physically producing a book and promoting it soon adds up.
When a publishing company agrees to publish an author's work, they are effectively making a bet. They are betting that they will be able to recoup the costs of their investment and turn a profit through book sales. As you can imagine, this leads to publishing companies picking up books that are seen as safe bets. Books that are likely to have mainstream appeal.
While on the one hand, this makes sense from a commercial point of view, on the other, it stifles creativity and uniqueness. If a book is seen as risky or different, it is unlikely to garner the attention of a traditional publisher.
Now that you have a basic understanding of how the traditional publishing model works, let’s consider its advantages and disadvantages from an author’s perspective.
Although most authors will never work with a traditional book publisher, for those that do, the following stages typically occur:
- Editorial changes. The editorial phase of working with a book publisher delights and frustrates authors in equal measure. When it works well, the editorial team will help your book become its best self. When it works badly, you end up resenting the changes imposed upon your original creative vision.
- Book design. As a traditionally published author, your book publisher will handle cover design and typography. While this results in a professional product, it also provides less freedom than is the case in self-publishing.
- Marketing analysis. This stage involves calculating sales expectations for your book in various regions and other ways of determining its financial outlook. Some books are dropped at this stage!
- Book printing. The physical production of your book. This used to be a great reason to work with a traditional publisher. Nowadays, excellent books can be created on a print on demand basis, cutting out the need for a publisher.
- Book distribution. Once your book has been printed, a traditional publisher will help get it into stores. Again, distribution is something self-publishers are more than capable of, although if you want to be stocked in brick and mortar stores it might be easier to have a traditional publisher in your corner.
Like anything in the creative realm, traditional book publishing is neither entirely good nor bad. Anyone who says otherwise probably has an agenda.
In reality, there are positives and negatives to traditional book publishing. It’s important not to form a viewpoint on book publishers before weighing these up. After all, a pro for one author might be a con for another.
So, what do you need to know about the positive and negative sides of traditional book publishers?
- Prestige. Whether we like to admit it or not, as authors, we’re creatures of ego. At least most of us are. There’s something that feels good about having our work validated by other people. And who better to give us the literary thumbs up than a book publisher? There’s no denying that getting on the radar of a major publisher gives you a certain set of bragging rights you wouldn’t otherwise have.
- Advance. The advance payment authors receive from a book publisher in the traditional model is a large part of its appeal. This takes the form of a lump sum payment that authors get when a publishing company agrees to take on their book. What many authors don’t know is this amount must be paid back through book sales, and the time from advance payment to publication is often lengthy.
- Connections. One of the major plus points to a traditional book publisher is the connections they provide. It's a lot easier to get your book into stores if you have a major publisher backing it. Traditional publishers also have a lot of names in their Rolodex when it comes to promoting and publicizing your book.
- Support. While self-publishing doesn't mean you have to do everything on your own, it requires you to take a lot more on your shoulders than traditional publishing does. If you shy away from the thought of marketing your book , you might find traditional publishing appealing. Authors will typically get a team of people to help their book find its feet.
We don't deny there is a range of benefits that come with working with a traditional book publisher.
But they are only one side of the story! To get a balanced picture, let's consider the downsides.
- Lack of control. As an author, creativity runs deep in your veins. But when you sign up with a book publisher, you might find your creative freedom is stifled. You're subject to the judgment of their editors. The book cover chosen for your work might not be to your liking, What's worse? There's nothing you can do about it. Once you've signed with a book publisher, it's very tricky to get out!
- Slow process. We live in an era of speed and convenience. However, it might not feel like it if your book is picked up by a traditional publisher. The entire process is incredibly slow and many authors find this frustrating. Also, a book publisher will only publish your books every so often. If you want to publish more frequently, and at a pace that suits you, traditional book publishers should be avoided.
- Lack of diversity. The lack of diversity in traditional publishing isn’t a secret. Many authors have felt frustrated by the tightly knit network of publishers who tend to have a similar background and demographic makeup. For example, 79% of the book industry is white. More children’s books are released that feature animal characters than people of color. This becomes a self-perpetuating cycle as book publishers gravitate towards white privileged authors.
- Elitism. Aside from race, book publishing is an elitist industry in many other ways. Disabled people and women are vastly underrepresented. Many publishers rely on a small number of agents to find new authors . The result is frustration and difficulty for outsiders to get a foot in the door. This limits the diversity of publishing.
- Failure rate. Many authors have the romanticized view that once you've been picked up by a traditional publisher, you've made it. That's far from the case. Of the small percentage of authors who get their work picked up by a publisher, a small number go on to succeed. Many authors fail to pay back their advance and don't even get picked up for a second book.
As you can see, traditional book publishing is far from a land of milk and honey. It’s an elitist, prejudiced industry that might pay off for a small number of authors, but is far from enjoyable or profitable for the vast majority.
Thankfully, the days of having to rely on a traditional publisher to make your book a reality are long gone. You now have an abundance of ways to get your book into the hands of readers without the permission of a traditional book publisher gatekeeper.
Let’s look at some alternatives to traditional book publishing.
Traditional Publishing VS Hybrid Publishing VS Self-Publishing
One of the biggest disruptions to the publishing world was the rise of self-publishing.
Originally, self-publishing had a less than desirable image. Many people confused it with vanity publishing . Also, a lot of self-published authors didn’t do the industry any favors. A lot of self-published books came complete with editorial errors, amateurish book covers , and other signs of low quality that simply wouldn’t happen with a traditionally published book.
However, slowly but surely, self-publishing is shaking off its former image. If you’re in any doubt about its desirability, you only need to look at the many traditionally published authors who now choose to self-publish and espouse the benefits.
If you’re unsure about self-publishing and hybrid publishing, and how these models compare to a traditional book publisher, read on for a brief insight.
What is self-publishing?
Self-publishing simply refers to the model of book publishing that gives the author the maximum level of control and creative freedom.
When you choose to self-publish, you take full responsibility for every aspect of your book. It’s on you to find an editor, get a book cover designed, and market and sell your work.
Of course, self-published authors can outsource any part of the process they wish to. Just because you're a self-publisher, it doesn't mean you have to do it all.
Given the amount of work and responsibility that comes with self-publishing, what are the positives? Does self-publishing have any advantages over the traditional way of publishing a book?
- Control. One of the major advantages of choosing to self-publish is the level of control and freedom you experience. You can do things entirely your way and on your own schedule. You won't have to endure the battles with book publishers that many traditional authors grow to resent over the years.
- Finance. Is self-publishing better for authors financially than working with a traditional book publisher? Overall, yes! While a traditional publisher might offer an advance, this has to be repaid through sales. Self-publishing requires a higher upfront investment, but after your book starts to sell, you’ll keep a lot more of its royalties than you would in a traditional publishing situation.
- Pace. Working with a traditional publisher is a very slow and frustrating experience. With self-publishing, you can move as quickly as you want to. There is no waiting around for the slow bureaucracy of a traditional publisher to creak into gear. Write, release, and promote books at a pace that suits you.
- Diversity. Traditional publishing is an elitist industry that shuts out authors of color and other minority voices. Self-publishing has made it easier than ever for authors of color and disabled authors to get their books out into the world.
For authors who want to enjoy the maximum level of creative freedom and financial reward, self-publishing is the way to go. And don't for a moment think it's inferior to traditional publishing. The number of traditionally-published authors who now prefer to self-publish through is proof of that.
What is hybrid publishing?
Hybrid publishing represents a different pathway than self-publishing or traditional publishing. But what exactly is it?
When you opt to hybrid publish, you pay a company upfront to produce your book for you. They may also carry out other publishing services such as marketing and promotion, depending on the company in question.
So why do authors go for hybrid publishing?
When it works as well as possible, hybrid publishing is a little bit like the best of the traditional and self-publishing worlds. Authors retain the freedom of self-publishing but also get some of the support that a traditional publisher would provide.
However, hybrid publishing isn’t without its drawbacks. Paying upfront to get your book created often represents poor value for money. Typically, authors are better off taking a self-publishing course and paying for the services needed to create a book, such as cover design and editing.
Also, many vanity presses have simply hidden their services under the disguise of hybrid publishing. It’s difficult to know exactly what you’re getting in a lot of cases.
How do self-publishing and hybrid publishing compare to traditional book publishing?
Should you pursue traditional publishing, self-publishing, or hybrid publishing for your next book?
For many authors, this isn’t even really a valid question. The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of authors will never get noticed by a traditional publisher. This isn’t anything to do with the talent these authors have. It’s entirely down to the conservative and impenetrable nature of the publishing industry.
Authors who want to enjoy the maximum amount of creative freedom, as well as higher royalty rates , should opt for self-publishing.
The right hybrid publisher might be a good choice for authors with money to invest, but be wary. Many hybrid publishers are nothing more than vanity presses who have rebranded. Also, hybrid publishing typically involves a worse financial picture for authors than if they had self-published.
If you’re an author reading this, allow me to share a small piece of good news.
You’re not limited to a single way of getting your book into the world! It’s entirely possible to build up a self-publishing career while also trying to get noticed by a traditional publisher.
If you’ve read carefully so far, you’ll know that most book publishers will reject your work without giving it a second glance. The odds are stacked against you. However, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do to improve your chances.
To boost your chances of getting noticed by a traditional book publisher, there are some tips to keep in mind.
Here’s what book publishing companies look for:
- Suitability. Typically, book publishers will only work with a certain type of book. Before you submit your manuscript to a publisher, make sure it’s of a genre or type they work with and want to receive. Otherwise, you’re condemning your book to the nearest trashcan.
- Personalized query letter. When you submit your book to a traditional publisher, be sure to add a personalized query letter. Think of this as a little like the cover letter when applying for a job. It should be persuasive and personalized.
- Commercial viability. Traditional publishers invest a significant amount of money and other resources to get a book to market. Any book you submit therefore needs to have good commercial potential to have a chance of being picked up. Tried and tested genres or books that fit with a current trend are good bets.
- An existing platform. Many book publishers are inclined to give more attention to an author with an existing platform and following. If you can demonstrate people are already interested in you, a book publisher is likely to view you more favorably.
- A marketable author. Of course, as an author, your book is the most important thing. However, if a book publisher sees you as being marketable and interesting, your work is more likely to get picked up than it would be otherwise.
- Endorsement from an agent. It’s a sad truth that many book publishers are only willing to listen to authors represented by an agent. This is another level of gatekeeping you have to contend with.
To be completely honest, even if you meet every one of the above criteria, you are still unlikely to get noticed by a major publisher.
It’s a sad fact that traditional book publishers are elitist and exclusionary. For the vast majority of authors, self-publishing is the smart way to go.

- Self-Publishing Services
Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of how book companies work, the pros and cons of the different types of publishing, and some alternative options for you to consider.
If you’re looking to get your book out into the hands of readers as quickly as possible, you know that working with a traditional book publisher is not the way to go.
Instead, we advocate self-publishing. Why?
When you self-publish, you retain full control. You have complete and total creative license over every part of your book. No book publisher will be there to water down your creative vision.
Also, when you choose to self-publish, you get a much better royalty rate.
If you’re ready to take action, it’s easier than ever before!
We’re proudly affiliated with Self-Publishing School. You can learn more about the company in our full review here .
Ultimately, while traditional book publishers are the right route for a small number of authors, the vast majority are better off publishing independently.
Why not enjoy the creative freedom and financial rewards that self-publishing represents?
Your book deserves to find its place in the world and book publishers are simply not the best way to make that happen for today's modern author.

My name is Sarah Luddington, you probably know of me as the author of The Knights of Camelot Series of books, among others. Created by a group of graduate students in 2010, Gold Line Press aims to promote the work of emerging poets and fiction writers, as well as to promote / elevate the chapbook form. The Gold Line Press editorial board does not adhere to any specific aesthetic approach. We seek out voices that deserve to be heard by a larger audience, whether those voices speak in formal or experimental verse. Our chapbooks are printed by Figueroa Press and designed by members of Gold Line’s Editorial Board with the intention of producing an elegant, perfect-bound book. Overall, our goal is to showcase exceptional emerging writers and reward them not only with publication, but also with broad distribution of their work to reviewers and bloggers. While most chapbooks have received only limited exposure in the past, our aim is to make the chapbook a more relevant medium and a truly useful tool for new writers who want to bring their work to a broader audience.

While we offer the control you might get if you published your own work, we are also putting our name on it. And you wouldn’t want to find the Lucky Bat Books logo on just anything, now would you? Therefore, you must submit your work to us if you want to publish with Lucky Bat books. Our sister press, LB Press, is open to anyone wanting to self-publish.

Is MTG's Book Such a Flop She Hasn't Made a Dime From It?
The rules about what lawmakers have to share about their contracts—like the one MTG has with Don Jr.’s publishing company—are murky.
Mini Racker
Politics Reporter
Bill Pugliano/Getty Images
MAGA firebrand Marjorie Taylor Greene appears to have recently skipped reporting any income from the book she published late last year, stepping into an ethical gray zone.
The memoir, entitled MTG, details the congresswoman’s time in Washington and was published by Winning Team Publishing, a company founded by Donald Trump Jr. and Sergio Gor, who insiders know as “ the Mayor of Mar-a-Lago .”
The company hawks books by right-wing influencers like Charlie Kirk, Steve Bannon, and even former President Donald Trump . Winning Team is currently selling one bundle that includes Trump’s coffee-table book and other signed swag for $999 a pop.
Greene’s book is far more affordable—$30 for a regular edition, $49.99 signed. But the personal financial disclosure Greene filed with the House this spring does not mention the book, Winning Team, or a royalty agreement.
In a statement to The Daily Beast, Greene’s office suggested that’s above board.
“Congresswoman Greene’s book agreement was reviewed and approved by the House Ethics Committee and in 2023 there was no financial activity that required reporting,” Greene’s office wrote.
That could only be true if Greene received virtually no royalties for book sales in 2023, since the ethics committee instruction guide stipulates that members must disclose ownership interests in intellectual property worth more than $1,000 or that earned more than $200 of income.
It is certainly possible that Greene’s memoir didn’t sell well enough to make money last year. Members of Congress are prohibited from receiving advances on royalties, so they have to depend on profits from copies sold. Greene’s book came out in late November and has only a handful of reviews on Amazon dated before the new year.
But even then, congressional ethics experts say they expect more transparency.
“Even if she hasn't received any royalty payments, my understanding is that she's required to report anticipated royalties in some way,” Robert Maguire, vice president for research and ethics at the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, told The Daily Beast.
The House Ethics Committee has previously issued confusing guidance about whether members of Congress need to disclose royalty agreements in addition to royalties paid. That can leave lawmakers unsure how to stay on the right side of the rules.
Last year, when The Daily Beast reported that Rep. Lauren Boebert failed to disclose book royalties , Boebert’s spokesperson said she hadn’t yet earned money from her deal and provided evidence that the committee had advised her that she didn’t need to disclose more. That advice ran counter to other Ethics committee guidelines .
“Part of the problem here could be mixed messages from the Ethics officials in Congress,’” Maguire said. “But it seems pretty clear, just based on the rules, that any royalties, whether or not they've been received by the member, should be reported in some way on the financial disclosure.”
One line in particular in the instruction guide for this year’s disclosures implies that members of Congress need to disclose book deals, even if they have yet to profit off their work.
“This includes any advances and contract payments in the form of earned income that have not yet been received for transfer of the intellectual property to the publisher, as well as any royalties currently due from the publisher for completed sales,” the guide states in a paragraph about disclosure requirements. “When an interest in future royalties cannot be ascertained, it is acceptable to disclose the value as ‘undetermined.’”
Kedric Payne, vice president, general counsel, and senior director of ethics at the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit watchdog, told The Daily Beast that that sentence suggests members of Congress need to share more than Greene did.
“I think there's a good argument that if you have an agreement for a book deal where you're supposed to receive royalties, even if there's a chance that it's not going to actually result in royalties, you should say it's not determined,” he said.
Other lawmakers have taken various approaches to disclosing. Freedom Caucus founder Jim Jordan listed his book, published in November 2021, on his 2021 personal financial disclosure as an asset of “undetermined” value, even though he also reported that he hadn’t yet earned any income from it. By 2022 , it had made somewhere between $100,000 and $1 million. Rep. Steve Scalise, on the other hand, left his 2018 book off that year's disclosure , then added it as an asset that earned him five figures in 2019 .
No other member of Congress is listed among the authors on Winning Team’s website. But Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake, who published a book with Winning Team a few months before Greene, did report receiving $100,000 in royalties from the company. That sum may represent money Lake already pocketed in the form of an advance, which she could accept since she’s not currently a member of Congress.
Payne emphasized that it’s the members’ responsibility to be transparent about their book deals. “Anyone would expect that earnings from a book sale would be disclosed here, and it's up to the member to explain if there's any small exception that would exclude disclosing it,” he said.
The public can at least look forward to learning more next year. That’s because there’s evidence in a Federal Election Commission report that Greene sold several thousand dollars worth of copies in January.
The Tarrant County Republican Victory Fund reported paying Winning Team Publishing nearly $13,000 for an “MTG Event on 01/27, 400 Books.”
An online sign-up form indicates that the county party hosted a fundraiser with Greene in Fort Worth that day and that tickets to the event, which raised more than $33,000 , included copies of her book.

What do book publishers do?
Sure, a book publisher prints and sells your book. But what they do behind the scenes encompasses much more than that. Publishers handle the entire publishing process for books, including:
- Editing the book, i.e. developmental editing, copy editing, and proofreading;
- Designing the book, i.e. book cover design and any necessary interior book design;
- Promotion and marketing, i.e. writing the book’s blurb, email marketing , setting up media interviews, etc.; and
- Production and distribution, i.e. formatting and distributing hardback, paperback, and ebook versions of the book to stores, both online and brick-and-mortar.
Note that the structure of publishing companies may differ, depending on their size. Bigger book publishers may be made up of publishing houses which may, in turn, be made up of imprints — each of which will have its own brand identity in terms of the type of books it publishes.
However, regardless of a publisher’s size, the scope of their work shouldn’t change. Once you sign with a publisher, they will do everything that it takes to bring your book to market.
What are the most prominent book publishing companies?
If we define success by sheer sales volume, then we might point towards the "Big 5" presses and educational publishers (who rake in a LOT of money). Over the past few decades, these giant publishing companies have merged with and acquired most of the mid-sized publishers in the industry. However, a few still remain. Here are today's biggest book publishing companies:
- Penguin Random House (Big 5)
- Hachette Book Group (Big 5)
- HarperCollins (Big 5)
- Macmillan Publishers (Big 5)
- Simon & Schuster (Big 5)
- Scholastic Corporation
- Pearson Education
- McGraw-Hill Education
- Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
- Cengage Learning
Together, these largest publishers dominate the publishing landscape. Countless beloved books come from their imprints, many of which you’ll find in our directory.
The rest of the publishing landscape is largely made up of small publishers, or independent publishers. Most big publishers don’t directly accept unsolicited submissions without a literary agent — but smaller publishers do, making them a realistic and worthwhile route to publication.
I have a long list of publishers. What next?
Congratulations! Now take a moment to thoroughly vet every publisher on your longlist. Scams are a dime a dozen in the publishing industry, and you want to make 100% sure that you’re dealing with a legitimate publishing company. Again, we strongly recommend reading this post and Writer Beware to know what red flags to watch out for.
When you’re confident in all of the publishers on your longlist, it’s time for the most nerve-wracking step: submitting your manuscript to them.

S&S Partners with Media Company Pave Studios
Newly formed media company Pave Studios has added Pave Publishing House to its list of businesses. Created this spring by former Spotify executive and Parcast Studios founder Max Cutler, Pave Studios works in a variety of media businesses, primarily podcasts, but also has interests in audiobooks, video, and entertainment. Its main holdings include the OpenMind and Crime House studios, which focus on wellness and true crime podcasts, respectively. Creators connected to the company include Khloe Kardashian and author and doctor Mark Hyman.
In launching Pave Publishing, the company announced that it has signed a co-publishing agreement with Simon & Schuster to collaborate on publishing new books and audiobooks. Under the agreement, some Pave-branded titles will be jointly published under the S&S trade imprint, and books that solely carry the Pave Publishing House imprint will be distributed by S&S.
In announcing the deal with S&S, Cutler pointed to an “innovative business model” that will reward successful creators. Cutler also said he hopes Pave Publishing will allow podcasters to earn more money since the monetization opportunities for podcasters is limited.
Commenting on the agreement in a prepared statement, S&S CEO Jonathan Karp called Pave “a truly innovative content creation studio” that is working to attract authors with a new business model. Karp also pointed to Pave’s roots in audio storytelling, saying that the new partnership should be able to take advantage of the continued growth in the sale of audiobooks.
Further details on Pave’s business model and publishing plans are expected to be released at a later date.

New Startup Aims to Help Publishers License Books to Train AI Models

Scribd Co-Founders Introduce Startup to Support AI Licensing for Books
Backed by a $5 million round of seed funding and investments from multiple venture capital firms and author Walter Isaacson, former Scribd co-founders Trip Adler and Jen Singerman have launched an AI licensing company that “makes it simple for authors/publishers to license the AI Rights of their content to AI companies for use in training models and more.” Per its manifesto , Created by Humans (I’m not making that up) aims to “preserve human creativity and make it thrive in the AI era” while offering authors and publishers an additional revenue stream. Publishers Lunch has a terrific deep dive into the service and related issues, but if you’re hoping for specifics, you’ll have to keep waiting, as at present, “the platform is long on promise and short on specifics.” Publishers Weekly offers a slightly rosier take.
Publishing has developed a knee-jerk “no” response to just about anything related to books and AI, and I get it. The big AI companies trained their models on hundreds of thousands of books with zero permission from or payment to authors or publishers. The resulting copyright suits will likely be working their way through the courts for years to come, and folks are both very angry and very scared of the impact generative AI technology may have on books and reading. But—you knew there was going to be a but—this toothpaste isn’t going back in the tube. AI is here, and we would be wise to give real consideration to companies that are trying to address the critical issues of permission and payment.
Yes, Created by Humans’s name is too cute by half, and the product is not yet fully baked, but this is more of a solution than anyone else has offered, and that has to count for something. I’ll be interested in what the service looks like when the details have been sorted and which (if any) of the Big Five will participate.
Whether they utilize outside facilitators like Created by Humans or handle it in-house, publishers need to take concrete steps to reckon with the realities of AI and protect both copyrighted materials and revenue.

Waymo One is now open to everyone in San Francisco
The Waymo Team
The wait is over. Starting today, anyone can hail a ride with Waymo in San Francisco. Rain, shine, or Karl the Fog, just download the app , and ride.
We’ve been operating in San Francisco for years now, deliberately scaling our service over time. With tens of thousands of weekly trips, our Waymo One service provides safe, sustainable, and reliable transportation to locals and visitors to the city alike.
Now it’s available to anyone.
Waymo rides for all, 24/7, across the city
San Franciscans are using Waymo to connect to the city’s social fabric, making fully autonomous rides part of their daily lives.
About 30% of Waymo rides in San Francisco are to local businesses. We’ve provided thousands of rides to and from individual restaurants, live music venues, bars, coffee shops, ice cream parlors, parks, and museums, boosting the local economy. In a recent survey, over half of our riders said they used Waymo in the past couple of months to or from medical appointments, highlighting the value of personal space during these trips. Additionally, 36% of our SF riders used Waymo to connect to other forms of transit, like BART or Muni. Some of our San Francisco riders even use Waymo to depart in style from their weddings .
“I'm thankful to be living in a city that embraces technology when it can improve our lives with convenient and safe modes of transit,” says Michelle Cusano, Executive Director at The Richmond Neighborhood Center.
Waymo’s fleet is all-electric and sources 100% renewable energy from the City’s CleanPowerSF program . Since the beginning of our commercial operations in August 2023, Waymo’s rides have helped curb carbon emissions by an estimated 570,000 kg , contributing to California’s ride hail emissions goals. This also empowers our riders to travel more sustainably — Waymo’s recent rider survey revealed that 53% of our San Francisco users feel that Waymo has helped them be more environmentally friendly.
Plus, more than half of Waymo riders in SF say that riding with Waymo has improved their sense of personal safety when getting around, according to the survey.
“I enjoy riding in Waymo cars and appreciate the ease of transportation,” says Charles Renfroe, Development Manager at Openhouse SF. “Members of our community, especially transgender and gender non-conforming folks, don’t have to worry about being verbally assaulted or discriminated against when riding with Waymo.”
In addition to improving mobility for locals, Waymo offers a unique way for visitors to experience the city. Thousands of tourists have enjoyed the sightseeing from Waymo vehicles, exploring San Francisco’s iconic landmarks from the Presidio to the Ferry Building. By supporting Spanish and Chinese languages through our app and in-car features, we ensure a more inclusive experience for a diverse group of local riders and visitors to the City by the Bay alike.
In total, nearly 300,000 people, including those who live, work, and visit San Francisco, have signed up to ride with Waymo since we first opened a waitlist — more than a quarter of the city’s population. We’ve been welcoming new riders to the service incrementally, and we are now excited to open it up to everyone.
Scaling our operations safely and responsibly
Safety leads everything we do at Waymo, and this step in our journey builds on over 15 years of experience building safe and convenient autonomous driving, ever since we took our first rides on the streets of Palo Alto back in 2009. With more than 20 million rider-only miles and nearly 2 million paid rider-only public trips under our belt, we’re now bringing the safety benefits of the Waymo Driver to more people in San Francisco.
Road safety is urgent. Thirty nine people were killed on San Francisco’s roads in 2022 and twenty five more in 2023, with thousands reporting injuries every year. Traffic violence kills around 40,000 people in the U.S. annually. The status quo on road safety doesn't serve the people of San Francisco, and the Waymo Driver can help change that.
"Drunk driving remains the leading cause of fatalities and injuries on American roads, claiming over 13,000 lives in 2021 alone. As drivers increasingly drive while impaired, the need for technological intervention becomes evident,” — says Patricia Rillera, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) California State Executive Director. “MADD proudly collaborates with autonomous vehicle leaders like Waymo, recognizing their potential to prevent tragedies caused by impaired, distracted, and drowsy driving."
Our track record for safe operations is unparalleled. We’ve been safely transporting passengers for over six years, now providing more than 50,000 rides a week across three major urban areas. Over more than 30 scientific papers, it’s become clear that the Waymo Driver is already improving road safety in the cities where we operate. The Waymo Driver avoids high-severity collisions better than even the most attentive human drivers, and the data shows that we have fewer insurance claims and injuries or police reports than human drivers.
Our operations improve safety for other road users, too. Over the 3.8+ million rider-only miles we’ve driven in San Francisco through the end of March, the Waymo Driver was involved in 17 fewer crashes with injuries and 12 fewer police-reportable crashes compared to human drivers*.
We’re committed to growing our service gradually and responsibly. We work closely with city and state officials, first responders, and advocates for road safety to ensure our service helps local communities gain access to reliable, safe, environmentally friendly transportation and has a positive impact on mobility.
A huge thanks to our many riders, community partners, and the residents of San Francisco for their support on this journey. Together, we’re providing locals and visitors to San Francisco with a safe, clean and fun mobility experience, keeping the city on the forefront of technological innovation.
And if you’d like to experience full autonomy for yourself, download the Waymo One app on the App Store and Google Play and take a ride today.
*The comparison is informed by Waymo’s methodology introduced in December, 2023.
