Beeston

30 Best Things to Do in Beeston

Just a stone’s throw from Nottingham lies the pretty town of Beeston. With plenty of shops, restaurants and pubs, as well as activities and places to explore, you’ll be spoiled for choice with what to do. To help you decide, we’ve put together a list of our favourite things to see and do around town.

1. Discover the house and grounds at Wollaton Hall

A grand Elizabethan country house, Wollaton Hall and Park has plenty of activities on offer to keep you entertained. Take a tour around the house to marvel in the Elizabethan splendour, or enjoy a stroll through the grounds, taking in the lakes and parkland.

2. Visit the Nottingham Natural History Museum

Deep inside the house at Wollaton Hall lies an incredible collection of over 750,000 objects and artefacts dedicated to natural history. From fossils to plants, vertebrates, shells and rare specimens from the world over, this is the largest dedicated Natural History museum in the county.

3. Crack the mystery of the Deer Park

Wollaton Hall’s deer park is the perfect place to solve a mystery or two if you fancy yourself as a bit of a Poirot! With clues scattered around the beautiful grounds of Wollaton Hall, this trail will lead you to discover not only whodunnit, but also the fascinating history of this place. Download a PDF map in advance to help you along the way!

Beeston

4. Connect with nature at the Attenborough Nature Reserve

The perfect place for both young and old, the Attenborough Nature Reserve lies on the River Trent which passes to the south of Beeston. With an eco-friendly nature centre featuring natural wonders, puzzles and colouring sheets, as well as some interesting specimens to handle and feel, this is a brilliant place to take the kids on a day out. Outside there is a sensory nature trail with an insect hotel, as well as a pond and bird feeding stations.

5. Explore the industrial heritage of Beeston

Located in a 17th century stable block in the grounds of Wollaton Hall, the Nottingham Industrial Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the industries that made the area. Including artefacts based on mining, transport, communications and textiles, the museum also has lots of interactive exhibitions to keep the kids entertained.

6. Unleash your competitive side with some crazy golf

With a brilliant ‘Lost World Dinosaur’ theme, you’ll be navigating through enormous rib cages, around a crashed plane and under dinosaur feet at the Lost World Crazy Golf centre. There are even two rafts which you’ll need to negotiate as you pull yourself across the water! Excellent fun for all the family, try to see who can get the most holes-in-one.

7. Delve into some military history at the Museum of the Mercian Regiment

With all things dedicated to the Worcestershire & Sherwood Foresters Collection, discover military items including uniforms, equipment, photographs and medals at this unique collection and museum .

8. Enjoy a Riverside Walk at Beeston Lock

With the River Trent running south of the town, there’s plenty to see along this pretty stretch of water. Beeston Lock takes boaters from the river onto the Nottingham and Beeston Canal, before returning them to the river at Trent Bridge. With ducks to feed, dogs to walk and the Beeston Canalside Heritage Centre to visit, this is a great place to spend the afternoon.

Beeston

9. Find the Beeston Seat and Hive Sculptures

In the middle of Beeston High Road stands the Beeston Seat . With George the Beekeeper keeping watch over his bees and hive, the Beeston Seat was designed to be a quiet resting spot in the otherwise busy town centre. Although the name of the town has nothing to do with actual bees, over the years the ‘bee’ in Beeston has become synonymous with the town as ‘a hive of industry’. We promise you won’t be stung!

10. Walk or Cycle along the Erewash Valley Trail

With a distance of over 30 miles, there’s plenty of ground to cover on this circular trail. The Erewash Valley Trail takes in some of Nottinghamshire’s most beautiful countryside, as well as local wildlife and waterways, but stays within easy reach of the towns and villages which border Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

11. Catch a show and get creative at Lakeside Arts

Home to the University of Nottingham’s public arts programme, Lakeside Arts engages people of all ages and abilities with its varied and eclectic programme. With workshops, theatre performances, craft sessions and much more, this is a wonderful local venue to enjoy.

Things to do with Kids in Beeston

We won’t let your kids be bored with the activities on offer in Beeston! There’s something for all ages, from tiny tots to towering teenagers. Read on to find out our top picks for keeping the kids entertained.

12. Enjoy an afternoon of pottery painting at Pot n Kettle Ceramic Café . With a huge variety of blank ceramic bases to choose from, kids and grown-ups alike can unleash their creativity on mugs, bowls, jugs, vases and many more.

13. When the weather just won’t cooperate, head indoors to Hocus Pocus Soft Play . With dedicated zones based on age, there are slides, ball pits and even a Skyglide which soars high above the play area.

14. Enjoy some high-energy fun at the Beekeeper Wacky Warehouse . With a guaranteed warm welcome, the staff will ensure your children have a fantastic time. Slides, climbing frames, trampolines and a huge ball pit are just some of the things on offer here!

Beeston

15. Run wild in Highfields Park , a huge expanse of green situated on the University of Nottingham’s campus. With a large play area suitable for children up to 14, this is the perfect spot for a summer’s day picnic, dog walk or even a spot of adventure golf ! You can also hire canoes and rowing boats to take out on the lake at Highfields Boat Hire .

16. Hire some bikes and explore the Big Track Waterside Cycle Route. Running for 10 miles between Trent Bridge and Beeston Lock, you’ll pass Nottingham Forest FC as well as the Trent Bridge Cricket Ground on this scenic walking and cycling route. Download a map here .

17. Head down to Rushcliffe Country Park , approximately 15 minutes from Beeston, where you’ll find trails to explore, a huge play area, skatepark and 4X track. While you’re there, why not visit…

18. …the Nottinghamshire Heritage Railway ? Wending its way through over 10 miles of Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire countryside, the NHR starts at Ruddington, next to Rushcliffe Country Park. With both steam and diesel locomotives on offer, this is a great activity for the whole family.

Best places for food and drink in Beeston

We know that all this exploring can be tiring, and so we’ve put together a list of our favourite places to sit down and rest while you enjoy a drink and a bite to eat.

19. Start your day with a bottomless brunch at The Pudding Pantry , served everyday at this amazing café in Beeston. With everything from pancakes to waffles and dedicated gluten free and vegan menus, The Pudding Pantry also offers Afternoon Tea as well as delicious cakes and bakes to take away.

20. Spoil yourself for choice at Bistro66, where you can dine all day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tuck into one of their fluffy Neapolitan pizzas, or just enjoy a cup of intense Italian coffee. Whatever your choice, Bistro66 is a great spot to head to.

21. Pick up a handmade doughnut at Doughnotts , where ‘dipped, dusted and deep filled’ takes on a whole new dimension. With everything from a classic jam-filled ‘nut to some of the craziest combinations this side of New York, you’ll be sure to find something to suit your taste.

22. Enjoy the perfect cup of coffee at Cartwheel Coffee , where coffee is taken very seriously. This independent roastery is the place to go for incredible brews.

23. Sample some amazing Sicilian street food and patisserie at Compa , where Angela and Manola will take care of you – ‘Compa’ literally means ‘mate’ or ‘bro’ but also a big ‘welcome to the family’!

24. Craving a curry? Head over to Yak & Yeti for an incredible feast of Indian and Nepalese food. A proper taste journey, this restaurant stands by fresh, authentic and food fit for a king.

25. Grab a bite to eat at Café Roya , where modern and fresh vegetarian and vegan food stands central. With influence from the owner’s Persian and Iranian routes, the food here is absolutely incredible.

26. Combine the convenience of tapas with the taste of India at Lagan Indian Tapas . Presenting a modern twist on the traditional Indian restaurant, Lagan prides itself on modern fusion cuisine which will leave you wanting more.

27. Or go a bit more traditional at The Frustrated Chef , where Spanish and world tapas blends modern and traditional flavours from across the globe.

28. Sit down with a pint at The Malt Shovel, a pub in the heart of Beeston which regularly hosts live music events alongside a great selection of beers and a brilliant modern pub food on the menu.

29. Travel to Italy at Amores , where Italian specialties and pizzas are the star of the show. A family-run restaurant, the chefs are very experienced and passionate about all the food they prepare.

30. Feast on fine dining at Restaurant Sat Bains . With two Michelin Stars, RSB offers a 10-course tasting menu which changes with the seasons and is driven by local produce availability. If you fancy something a bit different, try the Kitchen Bench in the pastry kitchen, where you can get up close and personal with the delicate pastries as the chefs prepare them before your eyes.

Trendy Arcade Games & Bingo Bashes: The Best Things To Do In Beeston

Published 20 October 2022 . By Kavita Singh .

Craving a bit of adventure? If you head southwest of Nottingham city centre, you might stumble upon Beeston. Brimming with character, the area showcases chic retail shops, cosy restaurants and quirky woodland walks galore. Whether you're a local looking to change things up or visiting for a day trip, we've rounded up the best of the best; check out the most fun things to do in Beeston.

Games And Cocktails At The Beeston Social

One of the best Beeston bars, this boozer has something for everyone. Flaunting ambient lighting and gorgeous greenery throughout the stylish venue, The Beeston Social is ideal for cocktails and some gaming. Get competitive over a round of ski ball, followed by a quick little snap session at the photobooth. Plus, happy hour starts at 5pm Sunday through Thursday, which means you can nab two kooky concoctions for £9.95. We recommend the chocolatey Toblerone.

Eat Italian Food At Ottimo

If you’re looking for Beeston restaurants, Ottimo is a bit of a no-brainer. Fab for friend catch-ups and cute date nights, the venue exudes minimalism with a quaint atmosphere and chic hanging lights. Crack on with scrumptious Italian fare, from pepperoni pizza to crab arancini and mussels marinara. Plus, the sweet-toothed can sink their teeth into an espresso martini tiramisu for dessert.

Play Bingo At Mecca

Situated just 10 minutes away from Beeston train station, Mecca is a grand bingo hall promising a roster of events to get stuck into. Have a go at a raucous round of the game, complete with a buzzing atmosphere and epic prizes. The venue is also great if you’re feeling lucky and fancy hitting the slot machines or if you want to see what’s on in Beeston, you can keep your eyes peeled for upcoming brunches, live music events and drag-drenched affairs.

Check Out The Attenborough Nature Reserve

Attenborough Nature Reserve is quite the hotspot when it comes to the best things to do in Beeston. Opened by Sir David Attenborough himself, the attraction is home to plants, insects and scenic waterside retreats. Settle into the lakeside picnic area as you sightsee or explore one of their trails as you explore the wildlife. Key tip: It’s a prime spot to see a kingfisher and Canadian geese so be sure to have them on your radar.

Have A Pint At Crown Inn

After hitting all the Beeston shops, nestle into the Crown Inn for a few pints of beer. The real ale pub on Church Street slings out craft brews such as Titanic Stout and Shiny Shorty, as well as other boozy bevvies. The watering hole also supplies plenty of fun through live music, street food events and quiz nights on Tuesdays. When the weather is a bit warmer, it’s also a great place to soak up the sun while putting away a couple of drinks.

The story goes that wanders through the city’s  Arboretum  provided subtle inspirations into the imagination of a young writer at the Nottingham Journal. Check out the cannons beneath the Chinese Bell Tower, with their pirate connotations, and the ornamental lake which hints at the mermaid lagoon. Whether or not he really did see a young street urchin in green rags playing around the trees – another local legend – is lost to history, but a brilliant story nonetheless.

An interim Ofsted inspection at a primary and nursery school in Nottinghamshire suggests it could receive an outstanding rating if a full inspection took place now. Beeston Fields Primary & Nursery School, on Boundary Road, Beeston, is currently rated good.

Inspectors described it as an "inclusive school where pupils feel safe and happy", adding that pupils are "polite and kind" and say there is no bullying. The Beeston school was found to have a "highly ambitious curriculum for all pupils" and that "excellent behaviour and attitudes to learning mean that pupils across the school achieve well".

Staff were also praised for effective behaviour management strategies, having "expert subject knowledge". The inspectors said: "They communicate their knowledge clearly and model tasks carefully.

"Pupils remember what they have learned and explain their ideas with confidence." Provision for pupils’ wider development is described as "a strength of the school".

Children told inspectors they are proud to attend Beeston Fields, which in addition to its ambitious curriculum, offers wide ranging enrichment activities including debating club, boxing and chess clubs, and where children are able to make positive contributions to the environment. In early years, the report says children are well provided for, saying "high expectations mean that children have a solid foundation to build on as they start school".

Inspectors write that very strong pastoral support is in place for those pupils exhibiting the greatest need. "All pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), are found to be both challenged, and supported to achieve highly.

"The support for pupils with SEND, including some pupils who have a high level of need, is exemplary," the inspectors added. Leadership and the workplace is also praised in the report, stating "Staff appreciate leaders’ consideration of their well-being.

"They value the support given to their professional development. Morale is high. Staff hold leaders in very high regard."

Headteacher, Angela Huthart, said she is pleased with the report and credits the whole school community with its positive outcome. She said: "The staff and governors of Beeston Fields are delighted that the work of the school has been recognised so positively.

"In particular, we are pleased that the inspector acknowledged the inclusive nature of the school, the high standards achieved, the ambition of the curriculum and the expertise of the staff. It is wonderful to hear that both staff and pupils are rightly proud and happy to be part of the Beeston Fields family.

"A huge thank you to our supportive parents and carers, governors and staff, and most of all to our amazing children who make this school such a wonderful place for our children to learn and grow."
