Beautiful tour, we paddled 5 miles along the shore. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and very fun. My 87 year old grandma got in a kayak and joined, the entire crew was so helpful to make sure she could get in and out of the kayak. Definitely would do this tour again!!

We did it! Total beginner kayaker here and we paddled the whole 5 miles along pictures rocks - it was amazing! I feel like we got really lucky with the weather as it can change quickly, but it couldn't have been more perfect. The staff were all super knowledgeable, friendly, and fun. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants an experience of a lifetime.

This is a strange review in that we didn't actually take this tour. We had made reservations for the boat/kayaking tour, and paid for the trip online ($352.80 for two adults). Unfortunately, our plans changed and we had to cancel our trip within the company's cancellation window. We contacted the company, and the amount that had been charged to our credit card was refunded -- in full and without any hassle. Kudos to Pictured Rocks Kayaking for its professionalism. We would definitely take this tour with this company if back in northern Michigan.

Thank you very much for acknowledging our refund policy! We understand the life and plans can change quickly and we will do everything we can to work with you! We hope to see you sometime in the future!

High winds and rough water meant our tour was switched at the last minute to the alternate Grand Island tour at a discounted rate. The tour was excellent even with the switch. We got up close to beautiful rock formations and our guide, Courtney, was great. And Captain Harry kept us all safe and sound. A great organization -- hope we can come back someday for the Pictured Rocks version!

Disclaimer: I didn't actually get to complete the kayak because of weather. I also tried to do this on 7/2/23 (like another 1 star reviewer) but there was an unexpected temperature inversion in the water that left much of the shoreline socked in fog. Of course everywhere else on land was clear and sunny... They officially canceled for safety reasons (they need to be able to see where everyone is). I know that Uncle Ducky did not cancel as a friend who, unbeknownst to me, was also there did their all day tour - but confirmed that a lot of it was only visible close up anyway. So, safety yes but as a side benefit they didn't waste our time taking us out to get a very stunted view either. Full refund quickly processed. Lake Superior weather is unpredictable. Hopefully I can return to actually do the kayak someday!

This was such an amazing tour! Getting up close and personal with this beautiful shore line was breathtaking. The tour we took was 5 hours, we took about an hour boat ride, then loaded into our kayaks and split up into smaller groups of about 5 to 6 kayaks. The kayak trip last about 2 hours, with our guide who gave us lots of information about the different rock formations and it's history. The entire crew was very accommodating and personable.

Thank you Andrea! We are glad you enjoyed your tour in early June!

Our group experienced rough waters and missed the PR tour but got to paddle Grand Island along with receiving some money back. Even though we missed Pictured Rocks, Grand Island was just as beautiful. We had "Adventure Vinnie" as our tour guide and he took our group through the tighter rock areas, waterfalls and caves that really test your paddle skills and made the day even more fun. Launching from the boat means you have an added layer of safety and you get to see more without having to turn around and go back. I highly recommend the Ultimate tour (or Unexpected Tour)! Thanks for a great day! ** It's always important to remember that Munising Bay can look calm and Lake Superior can be completely different at the cliffs. The weather can turn at any moment like it did for us.**

Had the time of our lives on this tour. Adventure Vinnie is truly one of a kind. He answered our questions, took our photos when we asked, and made sure we felt safe as first time kayakers. Would recommend this to anyone looking to get an up close and personal look at the beauty Lake Superior has to offer.

We agree! Adventure Vinnie is unique and one of our most dedicated guides who truly loves this job. We are extremely lucky to have him on our team! Thanks for leaving a review!

The crew worked their butts off to provide a great experience despite some almost rough swells. Clean boat, help getting in and out of the kayaks on the water. Guides tried to get pictures which they airdropped to you for free. Wonderful views of Pictured Rocks

We did the ultimate kayaking trip and it was absolutely wonderful. Our guide was so nice, helpful, patient and informative. The ship's captain was a true professional who inspired confidence while keeping things fun! This is a great adventure and awesome way to see the picturesque shoreline. This entire operation is first class and we highly recommend it. Can't wait to come back and do it again!

Yooper Yachts was absolutely amazing! We were a group of 11 people and wanted to experience our tour without a ton of strangers. It was so special Kayaking in single kayaks along Pictured Rocks. Definitely one of our most memorable vacations. They give discounts to bigger groups and customized private tours are even lower than the run of the mill outfitters. We did our research because it’s a good amount of money we spent so we looked for the best reviews and deals. Call them personally and you’ll be treated exceptional plus you’ll get a better rate than any of the cookie cutter competitors that put you within a group of 30-40 tandems. We love that they offer single kayaks no one else does plus the customer service you’ll receive is above anyone else. They are old school booking and clear the weather before taking anyone’s money that alone made us want to book with them. A person in our group booked a tour two years ago with a bigger outfitter needless to say it was canceled due to weather but this business kept 5% of his money. How crazy to make your customers pay because the weather was bad!! Do not go to any of the other 3 pictured rocks kayak companies. Take all my homework and book with YOOPER YACHTS you’ll thank me for this review. Thanks again Rick for sending my group their pics of our tour. Bob you were amazing providing waters and towels to us too.

OUTSTANDING SERVICE!! Luckily I checked out the 4 outfitters and decided to go with Yooper Yachts for 3 reasons. 1- they have SINGLE kayaks also. 2- Chose the best weather day for our tour/ if you are available multiple days. 3- No payment until the weather was cleared. In the end we realized how lucky we were when we seen the HUGE groups of tandem kayaks 20-30 people from other companies waiting while others caught up to them. That’s what we were afraid of being experienced kayakers getting in groups with inexperienced kayakers How do those big groups kayak at the same pace? Well they don’t they wait till everyone is together before moving on. We got to see more of the rocks and never were stalled and our group size was 8 people very manageable plus YY had 2 guides with us so they could spilt up between faster or slower paced kayakers. It was a awesome experience and we already booked for next season doing their Chapel Rock paddle!!!

Our experience with Yooper Yachts was terrific and definitely will spread the word at my job which is in the travel industry. This family owned business treats you like family! Helped my husband with vehicle problems even before we booked a tour with them. Rick and Bob are definitely the guides you want when kayaking Lake Superior they made us feel comfortable and safe. Definitely go with this tour company they are not some cookie cutter version that’s in it for just the money that’s why they are the only ones that do offer single kayaks not just tandems. Planning on doing another tour with more family for my Dads 60th birthday can’t wait!!

Definitely hands down the best service I have ever received. Book my tour 2 months in advance and was told they’d call me when it got closer and update the weather. They picked the best weather for our tour out of the 3 days we were in Munising. Paid the day before my tour a d had the choice of tandems or single kayaks. We picked a mix. We had the best time kayaking with Bob and Rick they were knowledgeable, safe and the kind of people you want to party with. These people took the effort and time making the tour spectacular!! Pictured Rocks National lakeshore is gorgeous!!! No comparison in a kayak. Going through sea caves and the lovers leap was a lifetime memory . Took pics of us and we got them the next day This is a small business and have a more private experience without 30 strangers. We passed the other outfitters with 30 to 40 in a group and felt blessed we picked Yooper Yachts. If you want nature and beauty without the tourist trap feel these guys are doing it right.

KAYAK PICTURED ROCKS WITH YOOPER YACHTS!! These guys got this tour business RIGHT! They are not the cookie cutter version that is the other businesses in the area We realized how lucky we were when our small group of 4 single kayaks passed 30-40 tourists being rushed on the way back from their tour Also YOOPER YACHTS has SINGLE or tandem kayaks which we really appreciated. Rick was our guide and he was informative about the rocks and knew his stuff These guides live here and were born here so you cant get better than that a true Yooper! We ended up having the most incredible tour and Rick let us go at our own pace and also we went farther than what we paid for. After we finished we had trouble with our vehicle not starting ugh but no worries we were in good hands with Rick he fixed our problem with our car! Kayak Pictured Rocks you will not be disappointed but make sure you book with this business

Our Kayak tour was the Lovers Arch Paddle and it was a bucket list experience. This small family ran business is truly the best guided kayak tour company in Munising. I researched all other businesses and what stood out was Single kayaks and less of a tourist trap. Well not only was that true but we were amazed at the hospitality these folks treated us with during our vacation. We were in the area for a few days so they were in constant contact with picking the best weather for our group. Granted we havent even paid yet and they went above and beyond. After picking our weather opening it rained a little that morning so they adjusted our time too so it missed us!!! I knew it was pricey and all other companies are around the same amount but after our tour we tipped Rick our guide even lol My friends were so happy we went with YY cuz on our way back we seen the other companies and their huge groups of tandems with 30-40 people. We loved that we could have single or tandem kayaks and that our booking was reserved without payment until the actual tour date. Also we were not rushed and with smaller groups sizes it was Nature that stood out not 30-40 strangers all kayaking a different pace. All in all kayaking pictured rocks is a MUST but use my review and all the others and pick YY. I work at a major outdoor sports chain and will be telling all my family /friends about YY.

Ultimate Kayak tour, Pictured Rocks Kayaking

The Ultimate Kayak tour with Pictured Rocks Kayaking is a MUST in your lifetime!! Incredible 5 hour excursion that drops you off at the main sights to get up close to the most beautiful shoreline you will ever see, you even get to kayak into caves! The entire crew were top notch from start to finish, we had Bobby as a tour guide and he made the trip even better! If it's not on your bucket list, it needs to be!

One of the best vacations we have ever taken. I would come back to the Pictured Rocks in a heartbeat. DO NOT MISS this spot!

Friendly rangers ready to assist on hiking trails and water falls. Beautiful lakeshore. Hiked a few trails and viewed waterfalls. Mosquitoes were plenty! Viewed the sand dunes. Much to see, you should spend several days here. We did not see it all, but what we did was worth it.

10/10 recommend that you rent your own boat for the day and take it all the way to Spray Falls to view the beautiful lakeshore coast of Pictured Rocks. The water is absolutely gorgeous! Bring layers of clothes though. We had sweatshirts and sweatpants on while driving around, but had bathing suits underneath.

Must see and do the boat cruise. We are fortunate to have good weather. Our cruise departs at 4pm but we started waiting in line at 3 pm to get best seats/view.Take a screenshot of your ticket to present upon boarding.Amazing views, pictures dont do justice.

pictured rocks kayak tours munising

We did three trails total in about 9 miles, and it took us from 10:00 AM to about 4:00 PM. Once you get to the trails and you see the waterfalls and gorgeous waters of Lake superior, it’s amazing. Our kids wanted to see what Caribbean waters look like and this is a darn near good comparison. We did Munising trail, Miners trail with overlooks and to beach and back, then castle trail by the falls and back on the opposite side, meeting up with mosquito trail at the very end. I highly recommend this area. I highly recommend bug spray, mosquitoes are ruthless in the area!

Kayak the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Shingleton, Michigan

Description

Added by James Brady

The best way to see the 200-foot sandstone cliffs that make the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore famous is to do it up close and personal by kayak!

The best place to start a kayak tour of the main section of cliffs along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is Miners Beach, located just outside of Munising. Miners Beach features a good size parking lot, along with a beautiful sandy beach that serves as a great launching point within sight of the 200-foot cliffs.

As you paddle, you can take in the remarkably clear waters of Lake Superior and the woods that hug the shore of Miners Beach. As you begin to reach the first stretch of cliffs, you will paddle by Bridal Veil Falls, which is typically visible early in the season or after a strong rain. East of that, you will soon be overtaken by 200-foot sandstone cliffs, some of which hang over you as you paddle beneath them.

There are not many places to stop along the initial stretch of cliffs, but if you manage to paddle approximately 3 miles east of Miner Beach, you will come across the perfect place to stop for lunch at Mosquito Beach. Despite the name, Mosquito Beach is a beautiful place to stop, relax, and take in the sights. The rock shelf that you enjoy your lunch on plunges beneath the water not far from the shore and provides for great snorkeling opportunities. Just down the beach, visitors can explore the caves of the Bloody Chiefs and even jump into the lake off of some of the rock ledges near the caves.

If you are lucky enough to have good paddling conditions, or are just in extra good paddling shape, you can continue paddling further east along the shoreline and explore several more miles of sandstone cliffs and highlights including the shipwreck of the Superior and the natural rock arch known as Lovers Leap. Be sure to know your limits though because the paddle back to Miners Beach can take several hours, especially if the wind is out of the west.

An absolute must if you’re in the area

There are numerous tours in the area however, if you’re like us and have your own kayaks— launch from Miners beach. We paddled just past lovers leap before turning around and heading back. If going out without a guide, be sure to be prepared and check the forecast for strong winds.

10 tips for visiting pictured rocks, 1. plan your route.

Chasing waterfalls? Looking to explore historical sites? Backpacking through the park? However you choose to explore your park, start here! If you are driving through the park, download self-guided tours on the NPS App. Research Things to Do and Places to Go on the NPS website.

If you’re planning on backpacking through the park, learn about shuttle services .

2. Find the Right Tour for You

The best way to see the Pictured Rocks cliffs is from the water with an experienced guide! Check out authorized commercial tours in the park, including boat cruises and kayak tours .

There are also guided photography workshops and guided backpacking within the park. If you’re visiting in winter, check out opportunities for guided ice climbing .

3. Be Prepared for Bugs

Stable flies, deer flies, mosquitos, and other biting insects abound at Pictured Rocks in the summer! Many of these insects are not deterred by bug sprays. To not let biting insects ruin your trip, we suggest packing long pants, socks that cover your ankles, and even an over-the-head bug net. And as always, remember to do a tick check after being outdoors! Learn more about biting insects at Pictured Rocks.

4. Know Where Your Pet Can Go

Leashed pets are welcome in several areas of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, including Sand Point Beach; Miners Castle, Miners Falls, and Miners Beach; the Au Sable Light Station grounds; and Munising Falls. Some areas – such as the Chapel/Mosquito loop - are closed to pets due to terrain and sensitive habitats. Learn more about pets at Pictured Rocks.

When visiting the park with your pet, be sure to keep them on a leash (6 feet maximum), dispose of their waste properly, and keep them a safe distance from wildlife.

5. Know Your Limits on the Water

Paddling on Lake Superior is extremely different from paddling on small, inland lakes and rivers. Lake Superior behaves far more like a sea than an inland lake or pond, and only experienced sea kayakers should attempt to paddle on the open lake . Waves and wind can be very powerful on the lake - you cannot get out of Lake Superior along the cliffs if bad weather strikes.

Recreational kayaks (less than 14’) and canoes are not equipped to go out on Lake Superior. Sea kayaks (typically 14.5’-18’ long, with a small cockpit) are the only kayaks equipped for paddling on Lake Superior and should only be operated by experienced sea kayakers.

While paddling, you must have a personal floatation device (PFD) and a sound-producing device , such as a whistle or air horn. It is also recommended to wear a wet or dry suit; have a spray skirt, paddle float, bilge pump, paddle leash, and marine radio. You should also be able to perform a self-rescue on a sea kayak, as emergency response can be delayed due to bad weather and remote locations. Always check the marine forecast before heading onto the lake. Being ill-equipped and unprepared can truly make the difference between life and death on the lake.

If you’re looking to paddle in the park with your recreational kayak, consider paddling one of the park’s smaller inland lakes, such as Little Beaver, Beaver, and Grand Sable Lake. Though these lakes are smaller, it is still important to have a PFD, a sound-producing device, and check the weather before heading out.

Go with a Guide - A guided sea kayak tour may be a great option for you if you are looking for a kayaking experience along the Pictured Rocks cliffs!

Learn more about paddling at Pictured Rocks.

6. Make Your Reservations

All camping in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is reservation-only. Reserve your spot in any of the 3 drive-in campgrounds or in the backcountry on recreation.gov ! If you are planning on camping in an RV in a drive-in campground, check size restrictions before booking. The Little Beaver Campground does not allow pets due to its proximity to the Beaver Basin Wilderness .

7. Pack Your Patience

The park’s most popular trails, such as the Chapel-Mosquito loop, can get very crowded during the summer months. Plan to arrive early, consider carpooling with friends, or try a different trail! There are no bad trails in the park – try hiking a different section of the North Country Trail or one of the park’s interior trails .

8. Stop by a Visitor Center

Grab your pass, a map, and information at the park’s two visitor centers – located on either side of the park. Rangers are available to help you 9am-5pm daily at the Munising Falls Visitor Center and Grand Sable Visitor Center beginning June 1.

9. Don’t Rely on your Cell Phone!

Cell service in many parts of the park can be spotty, don’t rely on it! Download maps and check weather conditions ahead of time – better yet, pick up a paper map from the visitor center! Tell others where you are going and when you plan to be back.

Don’t rely on your phone’s flashlight if you get caught in a sticky situation! This will quickly drain your phone’s battery. Bring a flashlight with you in your emergency kit!

10. Leave No Trace

We all want to keep Pictured Rocks beautiful and safe for generations to come! Refresh yourself on Leave No Trace principles before coming to the park.

To help keep Pictured Rocks’ wildlife wild, store all food (and anything else with a scent!) properly, in park-provided bear boxes or in a hard-sided vehicle. Never feed wildlife, as this will train them to come to humans for food.

Dispose of your waste properly. There are many park-provided trash receptacles throughout the park, please dispose of all your trash in these receptacles! Yes, this includes apple cores, banana peels, and orange peels – though these items will eventually decompose, they are not natural parts of the environment, and they are unsightly for other visitors! Nobody wants to see your food scraps.

In terms of human waste, please deposit this in park-provided toilet facilities. Portable, tent-style personal toilets are NOT permitted in the park, as they are a safety concern for our custodial staff. If park toilets are unavailable, do your “business” at least 70 steps away from trails, campsites, and water sources. If you are depositing solid waste, do so in a hole that is at least 6 inches deep. Bury when done. If you have brought toilet paper, pack it out with you.

MUNISING, MICH. -- It’s no secret that Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is one of the crown jewels of Michigan’s great outdoors. But what might not be quite as well known is exactly how to plan for a Pictured Rocks vacation.

The national park in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula sprawls out over 70,000 acres of pristine woods and waters, with 40 miles of Lake Superior shoreline, 100 miles of trails, waterfalls, a wilderness area, a historic lighthouse, and so much more. With so much to see and do — and all in such a remote area, often with little to no cell service — it can be tough to know where to begin.

4 Ways To Enjoy Michigan's Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Guest post by Campfires and Conceigres

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore extends along the southern shore of Lake Superior in Northern Michigan , from Munising to Grand Marais. There are several ways to experience Pictured Rocks , including backpacking, camping, and boating.

4 Ways To Enjoy Michigan’s Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

1. Pictured Rocks Cruises

Seeing Pictured Rocks from the water is a unique experience and much easier than hiking into some remote sites along the shore.

As part of the National Park Service, dogs aren’t allowed on the hiking trails. I was thrilled when I found out that Pictured Rocks Cruises offers on-site kennels for customers!

My ticket was $38, which I thought was a good price, given that parking and dog kennel were free! The cruise lasted 2 1/2 hours and is a great way to see the park from the water.

Taking a kayak tour from Munising is also an option, but paddling on Lake Superior is not recommended unless you have prior paddling experience.

2. Pictured Rocks Backpacking

Pictured Rocks is a great place for a beginner backpacker or first-time solo trip. It’s nearly impossible to get lost, as you follow the lakeshore almost the whole way and if you veer too far south, you’ll hit the park road.

There are established campsites along the way, all of them have bear boxes and poles, many have a vault toilet and potable water, and there are several “bailout options” as you pass through several day-use areas along the way.

Backcountry campsites at Pictured Rocks are spaced about 4-7 miles apart, along the 42-mile Lakeshore Trail (which also is part of the  North Country Trail .)

Read more fun reasons why you need to visit Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

3. Pictured Rocks Camping

Pictured Rocks has three drive-in campsites: Twelvemile Beach, Little Beaver Lake, and Hurricane River. All camping is on a first come, first served basis, so getting a spot can be tricky and early arrival is recommended.

The campgrounds are rustic – no electric, water or sewer hookups. Watching the sunset over the lake and falling asleep to crashing waves just below your campsite is completely worth the effort, though!

Additional campgrounds and hotels can be found in Munising if you don’t feel like roughing it!

4. Pictured Rocks Hiking

There are several scenic spots that can be reached with a short stroll or a day hike. Munising Falls is just behind the visitor’s center in town.

The park service has a great list of waterfalls on its website .

Between beaches, waterfalls, and wooded paths, there is plenty of options for hiking at Pictured Rocks .

Thanks, Leigh, for sharing all the fun ways we can enjoy Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Be sure to follow Leigh on social!!

About Pictured Rocks Kayaking

Established in 2016, we quickly understood the needs for a different level of safety long Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Why not have a boat bring you to the best parts and stay with the guests? Pictured Rocks Kayaking was born.

Pictured Rocks Kayaking has continued to grow their fleet and level of safety since 2016. We have a positive and high-energy group of  people  that really love what they do. We are all CPR/First Aid certified and drug tested prior to employment and take weeks of training to ensure the safety of ourselves and our guests. For 2023, we have improved our facilities to the fullest extent. We do our best to provide a first-class experience from start to finish. More  to come as the season starts!

Reitz: Examine families when deciding how to grow Michigan's population

My family moved to Michigan almost 12 years ago.

Three months in, my wife and I were driving together. “This feels like … home,” she said.

We moved here with no previous connection to Michigan. In 12 years, we’ve discovered so much to love.

Even with our pre-baked football allegiances, we learned to root for the Lions. I was at Ford Field when Calvin Johnson broke Jerry Rice’s single-season receiving yards record. We are now maniacal hockey fans, cheering on the Saginaw Spirit.

We can recommend restaurants across the state: Legs Inn in Cross Village, Raven Café in Port Huron, Mudgie’s Deli in Detroit, Littlebird in Grand Rapids and Pasong’s Café in Saginaw.

We explored the aged grandeur of Belle Isle. The Detroit Institute of Art moved us. My kids joined a children’s business fair at the Detroit Historical Museum. We rode a Model T at Greenfield Village.

People complain about Michigan roads. We’ve gotten our use out of them. Two of my children drove the Tunnel of Trees while accumulating hours for their driving permits. We traversed the major bridges of Michigan: Ambassador, Blue Water, Mackinac.

We encounter Mackinac Island with childlike delight every visit. We bike the perimeter counterclockwise and stop at the Cannonball Oasis for ice cream. We have a favorite table at the Pink Pony, out on the waterfront deck.

In our family you don’t pass by a used bookstore. Finding John K. King Books in Detroit was a reverential experience. We’ve browsed there and at Falling Rock Bookstore in Munising and many bookstores in between.

Even the people buried in Michigan offer stories. The Russell Kirk Center in Mecosta honors the renowned author. When our children studied abolition, we found Sojourner Truth’s grave in Battle Creek. Son House was an early blues performer and he rests in Mt. Hazel, just off 7 Mile.

Standing against the wind at Sleeping Bear Dunes. Taking photos of the lighthouses on Lake Michigan. Posing in airplanes at the Air Zoo in Portage. Kayaking around Turnip Rock. Riding the glass-bottom boat tour at Pictured Rocks. Skiing at Caberfae. Hunting for the petroglyphs in the Thumb. Skipping rocks at Copper Harbor. Learning to pronounce “Tahquamenon.”

My three children were not born here. But they all say they’re from Michigan.

We love Michigan.

And yet, that’s not why we moved here. We moved here because of a job offer. All the rest — the people and places we love — were benefits, not drivers, of our decision.

There’s a lot of talk in Lansing about population growth. The latest government commission offers a grab bag of ideas to coax people here. The commission calls for taxpayer-funded child and elder care, free college, down payment incentives, business subsidies, a 13th year of schooling, more mass transit, more neighborhood sidewalks and more parks. Few of these ideas have anything to do with population growth, and policies based on them have failed to drive growth in Michigan or other states.

Hannah Kling, an economist and Mackinac Center scholar, wrote a comprehensive review of the economic research about state population growth. She asked, “Why do some states grow faster than others?” Kling analyzed about 100 peer-reviewed studies and articles to find the answer. The takeaway is simple: States that experience job growth will see population growth as well.

Perhaps policymakers are overthinking the problem.

Instead, they should examine how families actually make decisions about where to live and work.

Michael J. Reitz is the executive vice president of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.
