Peter Gabriel Plays First Headlining Show in 9 Years: Videos and Set List

Peter Gabriel returned to the stage with a performance at the Tauron Arena in Kraków, Poland.

The show marked Gabriel's first headlining gig since 2014. More recently, he embarked on the Rock Paper Scissors collaborative tour with Sting in 2016.

The Poland concert was the first in Gabriel’s highly anticipated world tour, and the legendary singer delivered a heavy dose of new material, along with old classics.

The night began with a pair of acoustic renditions, as Gabriel performed "Washing of the Water" and "Growing Up." Things quickly got bigger from there, as the singer rolled into "Panopticom," the lead single from his upcoming album, i/o .

The track was one of 10 songs to make its live debut on the night. "Four Kinds of Horses," "i/o," "Playing for Time"  and "The Court" were also played in concert for their first time, while "Olive Tree," "Home," "Road to Joy" and "Live and Let Live" were given their world premieres (an unnamed, never-before-heard song was also performed). Gabriel has been putting out tracks from i/o on every full moon , and the latter collection of songs still remain unreleased.

The 1986 classic "Sledgehammer" closed Gabriel's initial set. After a brief intermission, he returned with a second round of tunes, which included "Darkness," "Don't Give Up" (originally a duet with Kate Bush ), "Red Rain" and "Solsbury Hill." For an encore, Gabriel performed his beloved track "In Your Eyes," then returned for a second encore with "Biko." Videos from the performance and a full set list can be found below.

i/o will be the tenth studio album since Gabriel’s departure from Genesis in 1975. It also marks his first album of original material in more than two decades.

"It's been a while and I am now surrounded by a whole lot of new songs and am excited to be taking them out on the road," Gabriel said when the initial i/o tour dates were announced. "Look forward to seeing you out there."

A North American leg of the tour will kick off Sept. 8 in Quebec. Gabriel will then wind his way through 25 stops across the U.S. and Canada, before concluding the trek Oct. 21 in Houston.

The shows announced today follow Gabriel’s previously unveiled European tour this May and June, and begin Sept. 8 in Quebec and run through an Oct. 13 concert in Los Angeles, with stops in between in Toronto, Boston, Philadelphia, New York City, Chicago and more.

The tour will find Gabriel joined by longtime bandmates Tony Levin, David Rhodes and Manu Katché.

The former Genesis frontman wrapped up the main portion of the set with his 1977 debut solo single “Solsbury Hill,” but returned twice for encore renditions of the perennial crowd-pleaser “In Your Eyes” and the 1980 protest anthem “Biko.” Watch fan-captured footage and a pre-filmed introduction of Gabriel’s touring band below.

i/o The Tour: Setlist discussion

  • Nov 11th 2022
  • Official Post

Hi everybody

Our German forum has started discussions about possible tracks Peter might play. Of course we do not know the new album yet, but what di you think Peter will play from his catalogue? Any surprises?

The tour announcement said that as well as I/O tracks there'll be "hits, fan favourites and the unexpected".

'Hits' will mean Sledgehammer and Solsbury Hill. Possibly GWF.

'Fan favourites' - personally I don't know what this means. Any takers?

'The unexpected' - where do you start? If it's unexpected it could be anything. Maybe he's finally persuaded his band to play Supper's Ready as he tried to in 07!

At the point of this announcement it's 40 years since 4. OK the tour will miss that anniversary but is it possible he'll focus on that album, do 4 or 5 from it? Including dusting off I Have The Touch?

Another category is of course 'The Obvious' eg In Your Eyes.

;)

Fan Favourites include Solsbury Hill, Sledgehammer, GWF & Biko (surely). I would have thought those are also Obvious.

if it were up to me he would do songs like Digging In The Dirt, No Self Control, Red Rain, Here Comes The Flood, Sky Blue, In Your Eyes, Don't Give Up. This is a selective list.

Unexpected might include something like San Jacinto & a couple of tracks from Up. I don't know!

:S

Quote from FeelItComing I would have thought those are also Obvious.

They are but I was teasing out the areas mentioned in the email.

Quote Unexpected might include something like San Jacinto & a couple of tracks from Up.

I wouldn't assume SJ but I don't think it's unexpected. I'd tend to agree Up tracks are less likely.

Quote from rkive With a very basic band I expect only Unpuggled Rearranged Hits.

What? What 'very basic band'?

  • Nov 12th 2022

Peter Gabriel: Vocals, Piano

Tony Levin: Bass

Manu Katche: Drums

David Rhodes : Guitars

:/

The band is not complete : that’s it.

…. Keyboard, back-up singer, another guitarist will be announced soon.

I favor the unexpected, although I know he won't drop some usual suspects.

Wallflower would be nice, as well as Home sweet home.

Maybe some re-arranged tracks, what about a fast version of a ballad? Sky blue maybe?

Quote from Backdrifter Maybe he's finally persuaded his band to play Supper's Ready as he tried to in 07!

I never knew that! Would have been interesting timing with Genesis out on the road then too.

Looking forward to US dates being announced. I've never seen him live. Would hope for a couple of tracks off IV and UP. San Jacinto, Wallflower, Growing Up, I Grieve etc.

He said it during a talk he gave about 6 years ago in London. He laughed and said it didn't go down too well and there was near-mutiny.

I'd be very happy with your suggestions. I never think much about my preferences ahead of tours but with him there's always a lingering hope he'll suddenly show 2 a bit more love but it's unlikely.

  • Nov 13th 2022

I feel like, as with Genesis, there are certain songs that have to be played, though I never rule out the unconventional with PG.

"Have to" Songs

Solsbury Hill

Shock the Monkey

Sledgehammer

In Your Eyes

Digging in the Dirt

Secret World

And there will, of course, be a big chunk of music from the new album. Which doesn't leave a lot of time for other tunes if the "have to's" get played.

Safe setlist would include some of the following (aka familiar songs):

Not One of Us

Family Snapshot

Here Comes the Flood

Looking at setlists from Back to Front, is it true that basically nothing from Up got played? Maybe some candidates there. I think just about anything off this album could be included. I Grieve is really strong IMO but is kind of a mood piece. I kind of lump Tower That Ate People with Up and it's a pretty good live number.

And then there's the tunes I want to see, aka long shots (or are they?).

San Jacinto

Come Talk to Me

Rhythm of the Heat

Biko and Shock the monkey were not always played during recent tours. I agree with the rest of your first batch.

It's hard to predict what "surprises" will be played. That could be a soundtrack tune such as Everybird or The veil or something completely different, why not an acoustic section? I think that would open a door to new arrangements. Growing up unplugged maybe?

Quote from Backdrifter ... 'The unexpected' - where do you start? If it's unexpected it could be anything. Maybe he's finally persuaded his band to play Supper's Ready as he tried to in 07! ...

If he was going to blow the dust off of any Genesis tune, I would say the most likely would be Dancing With The Moonlit Knight . He sang the intro, which was only for a minute, when he toured with Sting in 2016 so it's not totally inconceivable.

But, honestly rather than that, I would be even more thrilled if he played virtually anything in its entirety from PG2 or even some rarely played newer tracks like I Grieve, Burn You Up, Burn You Down or Love To Be Loved .

Some PG2 would be great. I'd be happy with your other suggestions.

Given he suggested SR to his band in 07, and DWTMK featured on the Sting tour, I don't rule out a Genesis track featuring as he seems to have opened up to the possibility. Probably still unlikely, but if it did happen I'd imagine a Lamb track - the title track, CC or NYC if his voice could manage it.

Quote from Ben The band is not complete : that’s it. …. Keyboard, back-up singer, another guitarist will be announced soon.

"Another guitarist"? What makes you think that? It's been a while since we've seen a Dickie Evans multi-instrumentalist type-affair as part of the line-up. (Even accounting for the "authentic" B2F set-up.)

  • Mar 1st 2023

Hey there ya'll.

I'd say there's the obvious ones PG will "have to" play:

In your Eyes

Then the "fan favorites" I think he could likely include would be:

Games w/o Frontiers

Digging in the dirt

Mercy Street

As far as "unexpected," it's possible he could put in one or two he hasn't played in a while, like:

I have the Touch

Or other "unexpected" ones could include songs from Ovo or a non-album track, like something from "Rated PG."

Then there's usually one or two he does just on piano:

Here comes the Flood

Washing of the Water

Father, Son

Of course he would likely play one or two from his Up album. Unlikely to be anything utilizing the BB of A, so probably not Sky Blue.

Lastly, his new material will likely take up at least four or five songs on the setlist....either way, I imagine he may select songs that are less taxing on his vocal chords (as PC did for his last tours), as his voice is not what it was 20 years ago and some of the higher notes are now a bit challenging....

And there we go!

  • May 12th 2023

I assume he will play 5-6 new tracks during the European leg, most likely the 5-6 which will have been released by then. Then it's quite possible he's thoring in a completely unknown track.

I was wondering if he would play something like Everybird (that actually was rehearsed during soundchecks in 2014).

I can also imagine he will do something about the Encores ...

Come Talk To Me

*new track*

Games Without Frontiers

Playing For Time

No Self Control

Shock The Monkey

Digging In The Dirt

Four Kinds Of Horses

I don't know why but I'm thinking of a more daring setlist. The band is well renewed, the approaches seem to be different and Peter mentioned - in a laconic tone - some surprises in the setlist...

I'm not sure about Red Rain or Shock the Monkey.

Parmi les incontournables: Solsbury Hill, In Your Eyes, Sledgehammer et Secret World. Quid de Biko? (trop joué certes mais tellement emblématique, symbolique. peut-être dans une autre version...)

Pour compléter, je vois bien San Jacinto (pas joué dans cette configuration depuis 2004 - je mets de côté le New blood tour); Games without frontiers; Signal to noise; Red rain; don't give up ou come talk to me (car il a 2 chanteuses); Wallflower, the rhythm of the heat.

Dans les morceaux qui n'ont pas été joués récemment et éventuelles surprises: Lay your hands on me; DIY; On the air, Humdrum, Shaking the tree, lovetown Et même s'il l'a déjà fait, pourquoi pas terminer en piano voix avec here comes the flood (sa voix semble tellement extraordinaire)

Peter Gabriel’s “i/o” Tour: A Night of Iconic Music and Timeless Performances

Peter Gabriel’s “i/o” Tour: A Night of Iconic Music and Timeless Performances

A few words that come to mind when you think of Peter Gabriel are icon, legend, visionary, genius, and pioneer. Last Saturday night, on October 14th, Gabriel’s “i/o” tour made a stop at the Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert, CA. This particular show was an addition to the tour schedule, as initially, the tour was announced to conclude at the KIA Forum in Inglewood, CA, the night before, back in March. Before Gabriel made his way to North America, he toured across Europe and the UK, then made his way to Canada in early September. The tour originally consisted of just seven U.S. shows, and less than two weeks after the tour was announced, it was expanded to include 13 more. This show was the second-to-last West Coast date, with the remaining shows taking place in Denver, CO, Austin, Dallas, and Houston, TX. This is Gabriel’s first tour since 2016 when he toured with Sting, who just played the same arena a week earlier. “i/o” is the title of Gabriel’s upcoming album, and it’ll be his first release since “New Blood” (2011). It has been a work in progress since 1995 when it was intended to follow “Up” (2002). This will be Gabriel’s first album of all original material since “Up.” The album is scheduled to be released in December.

When Gabriel tours, he brings out a one-of-a-kind show that only he could put on. Gabriel played a crucial role as the lead singer in the legendary prog-rock group Genesis from 1967 to 1975, while Phil Collins joined the group as its fourth drummer in 1970. With Genesis, Gabriel was known for his elaborate costumes, such as Slipper Man, Lawn Mower, Fox’s Head, Magog, and Flower Mask. Following Gabriel’s departure from Genesis, he released four self-titled solo albums (1977-1982), and his fifth album, the groundbreaking “So” (1986), was the first to feature drum legend Manu Katché, who has also recorded seven albums with Sting, as well as records by Joni Mitchell, Jeff Beck, Tori Amos, and more. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of “So,” Gabriel put together the band from the album for a tour in 2012-2014. “So” reached number one in eight countries and was certified RIAA 5x Platinum, including three of Gabriel’s biggest hits: “In Your Eyes,” “Sledge Hammer,” and “Don’t Give Up,” a duet with Kate Bush. Since “So,” Katché has played on “Us,” “Up,” and “i/o.” For 47 years, bassist Tony Levin (King Crimson, Stickmen) has been performing with Gabriel, and guitarist David Rhodes has been with Gabriel for 44 years. The band also includes guitarist Richard Evans, keyboardist Don-E, Josh Shpak (Trumpet), cellist Ayanna Witter-Johnson, and violinist Marina Moore. The crew members, from sound engineers to lighting technicians and camera crew, were all dressed in orange flight suits. Going back to the 80s when Gabriel’s band consisted of Levin, Rhodes, Katché, and keyboardist David Sancious. His band wore trench coats and wireless headsets. There has always been a futuristic aspect to Gabriel’s shows. There were a few times during the show when Gabriel, Rhodes, and Levin all stood and danced together, which was quite special, as it’s something they’ve done since his historic 80s performances.

Following a 20-minute intermission, set two began with “Darkness,” with Gabriel and the band performing behind a screen, which they also used for the following song, “Love Can Heal.” “Don’t Give Up” was performed on a riser behind the band, with Gabriel and his cellist/backing vocalist Witter-Johnson singing Bush’s parts. If there’s one song in particular where Katché went all out, it was “Red Rain,” which he played intensely while keeping the volume relatively low. The second-to-last song was “Live and Let Live,” from “i/o,” in which Gabriel talked about South African President Nelson Mandela (1994-1999), who the song is about, and how he stood with those responsible for his imprisonment and the death of his friends. How he shared the lesson of forgiveness. Set two came to an end with one of Gabriel’s biggest hits, “Solsbury Hill.” Gabriel would return for a double encore, with the first consisting of “The Tower that Ate People” and “In Your Eyes.” During “In Your Eyes,” the multiple screens in the back showed half of each member’s face and would do a closeup of their eyes. The show finished with “Biko,” which was written after the death of South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko in police custody in 1977. As the show came to a close, each member, one by one, walked off the stage as they chanted “Oh, Oh, Oh,” and Katché was the final member to walk off as he kept the beat going through the end. As always, Gabriel gave a performance like no other.
