Cruise Fever

Best Park & Cruise Hotels Near Port NOLA (New Orleans)

Guest Post

New Orleans has been a popular city for many decades, well known for Mardi Gras, masked celebrations, and its jazz music and spicy cuisine. It wasn’t long before the port became a popular place for cruise companies to ship out. Passengers will choose to launch their cruise trip here as an excuse to visit the “Big Easy” before they set sail to the Caribbean.

Planning a cruise can eventually get very expensive, and that’s before you start looking at costs for hotels, parking, and transportation. Some parking areas in the city charge quite a bit (the port alone is $20 per night for parking), and besides taxi cabs and Uber, there isn’t much in the way of transportation.

We’ve done some of the leg work for you regarding hotels in the area. This should hopefully ease your frustration regarding where to stay before or after your trip. We included as many hotels that offer shuttle service as we could find, while other hotels are within walking distance from the hotel.

The city also has a lot to offer any visitor, so we also recommend taking advantage of the many restaurants, shops, and historic sites while you’re there. If you feel the need, you can always stay an extra night or two just to give you more time to see everything.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my hotel doesn’t offer shuttle transportation what do i do.

Although there are some hotels that provide a way to get you to and/or from the cruise terminal, many of the hotels in the area leave you to fend for yourself. What you do now all depends on how close your hotel is to the port.

There are many hotels located within walking distance to the hotel. This is why many of them don’t offer shuttle service, as you can just walk to the port.

Other options including calling a taxi, Uber, or Lyft. You can also rent a car if you want, which would eliminate the need for parking.

Why don’t the hotels closest to the port offer rides?

While it would be nice if they did, it’s possible that given their close proximity to the port, maintaining a shuttle for such short drives wouldn’t be cost-effective. It’s easier for them to offer free parking to their customers, especially since parking around the city and near the port costs so much.

Things to Do While in New Orleans

The city has so much to offer anyone visiting within. While you’re waiting for your cruise, or after you’ve returned, if you have any extra time, we recommend spending it visiting various attractions, museums, or just walking down the historic streets in downtown.

Here are a few locations we recommend visiting while you’re in the city.

Restaurants

New Orleans is famous for its spicy cuisine, and there are plenty of restaurants in the area that will not disappoint.

Barcadia Bar and Grill

If you’re on a budget and you don’t want to spend a whole lot on dining, we suggest stopping by the Barcadia Bar and Grill, located on Tchoupitoulas Street. The average cost is about $10-$20 per person, depending on what you get. Nachos, wings, oysters, fried pickles: the menu has nearly everything you could want.

Café Adelaide

Here you’ll find fries flavored with lemon, herbs, and parmesan. You’ll also find shrimp and okra gumbo, and so much more. This restaurant has the southern food and spices you’ve been craving.

Go to Drago’s and enjoy your favorite southern style seafood, from charbroiled oysters to stuffed lobster, as well as a gumbo that’ll make your mouth water.

Attractions

Mardi gras world.

Learn everything you want to learn about the history of Mardi Gras. Available all year long are floats and tours where you can try on costumes, and you even get to enjoy some King Cake!

Best part: If you’re interested in taking a tour and need a way to get there, just give them a call and they’ll come pick you up in their shuttle for FREE.

World War 2 Museum

For the history fanatics in your group, be sure to visit the World War II Museum located on Magazine Street. This museum strives to tell the story of how the world was fought, won, and what it means to people today. With all kinds of exhibits, movies, lectures and more, you’ll be able to learn more about this war than you ever did in school. To find out more about cost and hours, visit their website: https://www.nationalww2museum.org/

Audubon Nature Institute

This place has everything for the animal enthusiast. They have a zoo, aquarium, insectarium, and so much more. You and your family can learn anything about the animal kingdom here. You get to visit with penguins, sea otters, touch a sting ray, feed parakeets, and view gigantic sharks in their 400,000 Gulf of Mexico Exhibit.

The Nature Institute also has a Nature Center, complete with a planetarium. This Institute is an all-inclusive place, and it’s a great spot for an impromptu field trip before or after your cruise. You won’t want to miss it, and you won’t regret it. For more information and to find out their prices, visit the website: https://audubonnatureinstitute.org/aquarium

The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk

Though not technically an “attraction”, the Outlet Collection is still a place to visit, especially if shopping is high on your list of things to do while in New Orleans. The Collection houses more than 60 stores and 20 dining options, all located along the Riverwalk which is right by the cruise terminals.

Go for a stroll down the Riverwalk and stop into any of the stores here and fulfill your need for retail therapy. There’s also a free yoga session hosted at sunrise (6:30am) by the Jai Bhakti Yoga Foundation. There are also other fun events scheduled to take place here. For more information, visit the website: https://www.riverwalkneworleans.com/events.html

With so many hotel options in the New Orleans area, it can be hard finding one that works for your trip, especially if you’re coming to the city to take a cruise from the port. Therefore, we’ve painstakingly combed through the available hotels in the area to find for you ones that have packages specifically catered to cruise passengers.

In our search, we only found a handful that offer both parking and transportation, and there are many more hotels that don’t offer shuttle service at all, particularly those that are located closest to the port.

Given the extremely high costs for parking in the city and at the port, we highly recommend placing more importance on the possibility of free parking over shuttle transportation.

No matter where you decide to stay, we hope you enjoy your pre- and post-cruise visit to the “Big Easy”.

One Trip at a Time

New Orleans, or the “Big Easy”, is an amazing city to visit with  lots to do  for all cruisers – couples, families, and children – so it is worth considering adding a day or two in the city before your ship departs to extend your cruise vacation. Even if you aren’t interested in exploring the city we’d still highly recommend arriving at least a day in advance to give yourself a little cushion if you experience travel delays.

Another benefit to staying overnight before your cruise is that many of New Orleans’ hotels offer free parking and a shuttle to the port, usually with only a one-night stay required. This could be a good option for you to help save some money on the costs of your cruise parking. Even if you aren’t travelling to the city by car, a free shuttle to the port can save a little money if you’ve flown in the night before your cruise.

We’ve rounded up some great options that offer ‘Park & Cruise’ packages and have done a quick comparison in the table below. As with all our tables, you can filter and sort the information to quickly find a hotel that is perfect for you. Clicking on the name of the hotel will take you to further details below, including reviews so you can find out what other travellers have to say.

Information in the table is correct as of May 2019, but as prices can vary, please ensure you confirm the price before purchasing. There is also a  map  showing the locations of each hotel at the bottom of the post.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

Although New Orleans is geared toward welcoming visitors and has many hotel rooms to choose from, we recommend you make your reservations in advance, especially during the busy periods for cruises (e.g. school holidays and summer) or during festivals when hotels might be booked up. This will help ensure you are able to get your preferred hotel and room type.

We also recommend you call the hotel you are interested in to check the availability of their ‘Park & Cruise’ packages as there may be a limited number of rooms available with this offer and some hotels may only offer this option if you make the reservation directly with them.

6 Easy Transportation Options to the New Orleans Cruise Port

Are you flying into New Orleans for your cruise? Or maybe you simply don’t want to worry about driving and parking in the city? No matter your reason, there are plenty of ways to get to the cruise terminal without driving your own car.

New Orleans Steetcar

As a tourist destination, there is a large industry the revolves around getting out-of-towners around New Orleans. Whether you want to come in and head straight to the cruise ship or if you want to arrive early and experience all that New Orleans has to offer, there are transportation options that have you covered.

Below, we cover all the major ways to get around the city, with a focus on getting from the airport to the cruise port.

Location of Port of New Orleans

Before we dive into your best options for getting around, it’s helpful to have a lay of the land and understand the port’s location to the rest of the city.

The cruise terminal is located near the center of New Orleans on the Mississippi River, just a short distance from downtown and the French Quarter.

Coming from the airport? Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport is about 15 miles from the cruise port. It will take you about 25 minutes to get there.

Here is a map showing the cruise terminal in relation to the airport to give you an idea of the location:

Map of New Orleans cruise port

So how should you get around New Orleans? As we said, there are a number of ways to get to your destination. Below we highlight each one, including our recommendation…

Uber & Lyft (Recommended)

Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are approved in New Orleans, offering a great alternative to taxis. We have a full write-up on the services here . Uber and Lyft are wonderful options for convenience and low prices.

Simply pull up the app on your phone, request a ride, and you can be on your way within minutes. Coverage includes everywhere in the greater New Orleans area, including the airport.

So how much does it cost? Estimated fares for either service are about $35-$40 each way between the airport and the cruise port . Given the location of the cruise port near downtown and the French Quarter, roughly the same rate will get you to those popular spots as well.

Keep in mind that this is a rate is for up to four people, unlike taxi fares. Taxis have a flat rate of $14 for one person, or $8 per person for two or more passengers, or the meter fare . Thus, a family of four would expect to pay about $35 using Uber/Lyft to get to the port from the airport, versus at least $32 for a cab.

If you are already in the area (not the airport) and want a ride, we’ve rounded up some estimated costs depending on where you are in the city:

The bottom line is that depending on your level of service and the number of passengers, services like Uber and Lyft can be cheaper than taking a cab. Read more about Uber/Lyft here .

If you’re looking for simplicity, a taxi is a good bet. You don’t have to reserve ahead — just hop in and go. And given their reasonable flat rates from the airport, we think taxis are fairly economical if traveling with two or fewer people.

Taxi rates from the airport to the cruise port are $14 for one passenger . If two or more are riding, it is $8 per person, or the meter fare (whichever is greater). If headed to the Central Business District from the airport, then taxis charge a flat fee of $36 for one or two passengers or $15 per person for three or more.

Cruise Line Shuttles

If you like, you can also book a shuttle provided by the cruise line to take you from the airport to the cruise port. When it’s time to debark after your cruise, the same shuttle can take you back to catch your flight.

If you want to take a cruise line shuttle, it must be booked in advance. While some people opt for this service, we find it expensive and cumbersome.

Instead of going when you’re ready like Uber or a taxi, the shuttles will wait for passengers and are shared vehicles. As well, the shuttles only travel between the airport and cruise port and are only available on cruise day. So if you arrive in town the day before your cruise, then you can’t use the cruise line’s shuttle.

As well, we find the shuttles pricey. Unless you are traveling solo, expect to pay more for a cruise line shuttle than a taxi. For example, Carnival recent rates were $28 one-way per person. So a family of four would pay more than $100 one-way to the cruise port.

If you’re still interested in learning more about cruise shuttles, simply click on your cruise line below:

  • Royal Caribbean

Independent Shuttles

If traveling in a large group (10 or more people), there is a shuttle service that specializes in runs from the airport and can get you to the cruise terminal. Airport Shuttle New Orleans serves the airport and can get you to any hotspot around the city — including the port.

Pricing runs about $400 one-way for up to 14 people, or about $30 per person.

To our knowledge, there are no independent shuttles at the moment offering rides for smaller groups or individuals. In that case, an Uber/Lyft or taxi seem to be your best option.

Car Services

Want to arrive to the port in style? Or maybe you are traveling with a large group and need a big vehicle like a passenger bus? In that case you might be interested in a private car service.

There are a number of private companies that offer everything from limousine rides to luxury sedans to vans to shuttle buses. In other words, no matter what sort of ride you need, you can get it.

One thing to keep in mind is that these services are going to be a bit more expensive than just getting a taxi or Lyft to the cruise port. Below we’ve listed a few options for car services in New Orleans.

  • Big Easy Limos — Offers everything from a vintage Rolls Royce to vans to shuttle buses
  • A Regal Limousine Service — Get a ride to the port in a luxury SUV, a shuttle bus or even a Rolls Royce
  • Audubon Coach — Ideal for larger groups, offers buses and limo busses to get you to the cruise port fashionably

Hotels With Shuttles to the Port

One of the nice perks about a city with a booming cruise industry is that hotels in the area roll out the red carpet to cruise passengers. That includes perks including transportation to the cruise port for hotels guests. Not many hotels offer this following the pandemic, but we’ve dug through and found a some that do, along with a number of hotels within walking distance of the New Orleans cruise port.

These shuttles can provide you a convenient ride without headache and hassle.

For more details and a list of New Orleans hotels with shuttles/walking distance to the cruise port, read our article here .

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the least expensive way to get a ride to the port? Looking to save money? If you plan to stay at a hotel the night before your cruise, then we suggest the least expensive way to get to the port is to stay at a hotel with a cruise shuttle.

Not staying at a hotel? In that case you’ll usually find Uber/Lyft or taxi to be the least expensive way to get to the port. It’s about $35 for a ride to the port from the airport for up to four people. Closer locations are even less expensive.

What time should I get a ride back to the airport after my cruise? Most cruise ships arrive back into port early in the morning, often as early as 6-7 a.m. But before you book that flight home, remember that it can take some time to actually get to your flight.

First, it’s normal for it to take 2-3 hours for the entire ship to debark and get through customs and immigration. From there, it’s about half an hour to the airport, not accounting for time waiting for your ride. For that reason, we suggest not booking your departing flight before noon.

What about public transportation options from the airport? Unfortunately, there isn’t an easy way to get from the airport to the cruise port using public transportation. Major lines around the city require one or more transfers — and walking in New Orleans’ famous heat and humidity — to get from a stop to the terminals.

You can take the 202 Airport Express from the airport into the city. Then you’ll need to transfer over to the Canal Streetcar (48) , which runs to Harrah’s Casino. At that point, you can walk to the cruise terminals, which are about 15 minutes away. One thing to note is that the Airport Express runs only every 1.5 hours, so be prepared for a lengthy wait.

When your all-star Detroit concert opens with none other than Miss Diana Ross gliding down the stage catwalk in an enormous cloud of orange chiffon singing “I’m Coming Out,” you are setting the bar high from the jump — especially if you’re kicking off an event with Eminem , Jack White , Jelly Roll, Common and many others.

But six years ago, the Ford Motor Company decided to save the building, and now, after years of painstaking renovation and restoration, the building has reopened as an “innovation hub.” In theory, the concert is in celebration of the station’s revival — but in reality, it was a declaration: Detroit isn’t back, says the sizzle reel — it never left. (The concert, called “Live From Detroit: The Concert At Michigan Central” and produced by Oscars and Super Bowl Halftime veteran Jesse Collins, will air on NBC as a one-hour primetime special on June 9 starting at 7 p.m. ET/PT.)

Big Sean performed at the 2018 groundbreaking ceremony where Ford declared their intentions, and he was back tonight, visibly stoked to be on stage in front of the old train station, and his set reflected that: 2024’s “On Up,” a song about his son, along with “Blessings” and closing with “Bounce Back,” an absolutely relevant Detroit almost-anthem. This was followed by a tribute to 79-year-old local hero Bob Seger featuring Melissa Etheridge, Fantasia, and Jelly Roll. Etheridge’s smoky alto worked well on the low-key “Mainstreet,” but Fantasia’s turned up for a Tina Turner-esque rendition of “Shakedown,” Seger’s 1987 contribution to the “Beverly Hills Cop II” soundtrack. And Jelly Roll’s “Turn the Page” perfectly captured the original’s pathos. The three finished the tribute with a joint version of “Old Time Rock and Roll” — a predictable but energizing cap on their set.

Veteran rapper Common appeared with Slum Village in tribute to J Dilla in a segment that was introduced by the late, pioneering hip-hop producer’s mother, Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey. Dilla passed in 2006 but his stamp on hip-hop is indelible and continues to unfold in current artists influence and his absence are still very real to his friends, fans, and collaborators, as evidenced by the emotional performance tonight.

Introductions tonight were handled by an array of popular local celebrities, sports figures, politicians —Governor Gretchen Whitmer made an early appearance before concluding with a verbal mic-drop, “Big Gretch, out!” — and Ford executives. Throughout the night, the train station’s iconic facade was creatively utilized as a backdrop, illuminated with lighting, special effects and tasteful implementations of pyrotechnics. The production was staged by Jesse Collins Entertainment, known for their work on large spectacles from the Super Bowl halftime show to countless awards shows. There was a clear roof over the stage just in case — the day before, a tornado had touched down in a nearby suburb during dress rehearsal — but Thursday night the problem wasn’t rain, it was wind so strong that the production could not fly the speaker columns or the video screens until the last few acts. Even with those challenges, the sound was stellar throughout Roosevelt Park, the grounds in front of the station where the free event took place in front of a crowd of approximately 20,000.

Techno City got its props during the set change before Jack White when DJ Skyy Jetta performed a tribute to genre pioneers the Belleville Three. Detroit is widely considered to be the birthplace of techno, and the genre’s history isn’t an afterthought here. Jetta’s brief but innovative set kept everyone moving as the anticipation for the end of the night approached.

The always color-coordinated White, who grew up not far from where he was now performing, turned Michigan Central blue as he told the audience he was going to play some songs that were written “a few blocks from here.” After opening with “Here My Train a’ Comin” (OK he didn’t write that one) and “Hotel Yorba,” he was off and running. White is gifted with the ability to fill any space, no matter the size, with wall to wall rock and roll, and his set tonight was colossal. “Seven Nation Army” had the entire crowd singing and clapping along; they could probably hear the noise in the traffic on the Ambassador Bridge that crosses the Detroit River to Canada, just beyond the station.

Any attendees who thought they were being smart and beating the traffic by leaving after White’s set probably regretted that decision when they got home. The between-set changeover took longer than others because it required making room for the entire Detroit Symphony Orchestra — who were there to accompany none other than Eminem, who executive produced the event. Every phone was held aloft the minute he walked onstage; his name wasn’t part of the official lineup, but attendees fervently believed he would be there anyway.

Anticipation aside, it was an enormous, emotional performance that began with “Houdini” (and brought back Jelly Roll to sing the song’s sample from Aerosmith’s “Dream On”), “Sing for the Moment,” “Welcome 2 Detroit” — guest appearance by Trick Trick included — before finishing up with “Not Afraid.” This wasn’t any kind of vanity appearance — at the end of a night like this, Eminem hit the stage and delivered with all of his energy and intensity.

“Detroit, we up,” he announced at the end of “Not Afraid.” “We love you. Our city’s up. Let’s fucking go!” There was pyro. There were fireworks.  Michigan Central turned Ford blue, and the crowd headed out towards Michigan Avenue. (Head here for a full recap of Eminem’s set .)
