What Happened To The Aerosmith Tour Van From American Pickers?

Aerosmith van in American Pickers

One of the most famous finds on History reality series "American Pickers" involved a very popular '70s rock band and a touring van previously thought to be lost. In Season 19, hosts Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz discovered the van on a man's property in Chesterfield, Massachusetts. It turns out the van was used by New England band Aerosmith early in their career, and original member Ray Tabano helped confirm its authenticity (via Distractify ). The "American Pickers" crew then bought the car and restored it as closely as possible to its original glory.

In the following season, Aerosmith themselves appeared on the show and were shown their iconic, newly restored former vehicle. The band members then reminisced about their days touring in the van and were happy to hear the driver-side door still made the same squeaky noise. Ultimately the van was one of the best finds ever for the whole "American Pickers" crew.

Fans of the reality series might be curious about where it wound up. Here's everything we know about what happened to the Aerosmith touring van after the show.

Aerosmith now owns the van

Aerosmith actually bought the van from the "American Pickers" crew, so the vehicle is officially in their possession now. This was a beautiful ending to a long journey, and the van is back in the hands of its original owners. The restored vehicle was displayed outside the Park Theater for quite some time, where the rock group held a Las Vegas residency (via Fox News ). According to Aerosmith's official Facebook page, the residency came to a screeching halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the van was packed up and taken away.

It's uncertain where the van is currently located, though we know that Aerosmith still owns the vehicle. Lead guitarist Joe Perry commented on " American Pickers " that he'd like the van to make its way into the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. The band may have started negotiating for precisely that to happen, or the van could simply be in storage somewhere until the pandemic ends. Whether Aerosmith can resume their residency again in the future remains to be seen, but we're just happy knowing that their tour van is back home.

Aerosmith's banged-up tour van that was discovered abandoned in woods last year is returned to the band for their Las Vegas residency

In August last year, Aerosmith’s original tour bus was discovered abandoned in woods 110 miles west of Boston .

It was found by Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz, the hosts of  American Pickers , a reality TV series shown on The History Channel.

The pair and their team set about restorong the 1964 International Harvester Metro van to its original glory – and, with the project now complete, they've handed the keys back to Aerosmith in the latest episode of the show.

A trailer for Aerosmith Gets Back in the Saddle can be seen below, and shows Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer and Brad Whitford reminisce about their days cooped up in the vehicle as they travelled from town to town.

Drummer Kramer says: “We spent a lot of time and hours travelling in this box, and it looks and feels the same.”

Guitarist Perry adds: “I can’t remember a time when we were left stuck – it always ran. We all lived together and were doing our thing.”

As for their plans for the van, Aerosmith say they’d like to incorporate it into their Las Vegas residency and eventually park it for ever at The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Airstream trailers emerged in the 1930s and became emblems of Americana—specifically automobile-oriented vacation culture—by the 1950s. The trailers were originally designed to incorporate aircraft construction methods that would lessen wind resistance and improve their strength-to-weight ratio—namely, an aerodynamic, curved shape, polished aluminum exterior, and riveted panels. The interiors were also innovative for the time, complete with synthetic fabrics, laminate countertops and cabinets, and creative storage solutions. Today, many Airstream owners and designers overhaul the vintage travel trailers by incorporating updated features while preserving the quintessential Airstream style.

Their latest project, Sol (short for Solstice), captures the pair’s love of nature and their warm, down-to-earth energy. "The landscape inspired it," Bolden says of the interior tones, materials, and styling. "From our porch, we can see the river across the highway, and it’s very lush—there are pasture lands, cows walking by, and rich, yellow-orangey sunsets." The camper’s glowing color palette draws upon these natural notes.

A Musician Makes His Home in a Restored 1968 Airstream Land Yacht

The story of August Hausman’s restored 1968 Airstream Land Yacht begins about 25 years ago, when his father, noted interior designer Shawn Hausman, received it as a 40th birthday present from his own father, a film producer. "My dad had it for a while," says August. "He lived in it a bit when he was working on projects and whatnot, but for the past decade it’s just been rotting away."

A musician as well as an interior designer in his own right, August saw an opportunity. At first, he toyed with the idea of fixing the trailer up to make an Instagrammable rental or an Airbnb, but around the same time he decided to leave Los Angeles for his hometown of Ojai and he needed a place to live. While August is probably not the only person in Ojai living in a restored Airstream, his is probably one of the nicest around, with a clean, timeless design and a few high-end flourishes.

Honey’s material palette is simple—it’s largely a mix of wood, stone, and leather because Ashton didn’t want the tiny digs to be overwhelmed by disparate finishes. Throughout the interior, she paired modern, clean elements with antiques, noting how she is especially drawn to "items that are looked upon as junk or trash and just need some TLC—like Honey."

A 1972 Airstream Sovereign Is Transformed Into a Family Home For $23K

Before embarking on their DIY renovation, the Cashios knew that the Airstream would become their full-time home—so it would have to be practical and family friendly. An Oregon Couple Renovate Their 1966 Airstream Named Gilda

Anna Jacobs and Damian Schmitt embarked on their first vintage Airstream renovation with this 1966 Overlander, which they affectionately named Gilda. That way, they can run off batteries when plugged in and pull less power."

A Couple Revamp an Old Airstream Into a Charming Workspace and Home

Atlanta-based couple Sheena and Jason successfully revamped a 1975 Airstream, also known as Mavis, to serve as their "rolling living and workspace." Because Sheena and Jason both work remotely, the duo made sure to create two dedicated work areas—Sheena’s desk is near their bed at the front of the trailer, while Jason’s work area is separately located toward the back.

It took Sheena and Jason 10 months to complete the Airstream renovation. "Originally, our trailer was a rear-bath unit with twin-size beds," Sheena says. "We relocated the [sleeping area] to the front of the trailer; it’s the sunniest spot and definitely makes for a great space for our dog to bask in the sun for his afternoon naps."

A Landscape Architect’s 1959 Airstream Gets a Splash of Color

Landscape architect Andreas Stavropoulos transformed a 1959 Airstream that he bought off of Craigslist into a live-in structure situated in the garden of a co-op in North Berkeley, California. With just 150 square feet to work with, Andreas "jettisoned the 1950s colors and wall-to-wall linoleum, and moved in with cork flooring, track lighting, fresh, colorful paint, and custom- designed cabinets and furniture to fit the interior topography," he says.

A Converted Airstream Holds a Kitchen Island and a Hidden Murphy Bed

Japanese architect Toshihiko Suzuki of Tokyo-based design firm Atelier OPA applied his small-space sensibility to this gutted Airstream. A steel-clad central island in the center of the space can transform into a cooking surface with a hidden sink and hot plate, a dining table for six, and even two twin beds simply by opening or expanding various drawers and surfaces.

The Original Orient Express Is Returning to Europe in 2024 — With 17 Beautifully Refurbished Carriages

Seventeen of the original Nostalgie-Istanbul-Orient-Express carriages were discovered in Poland in 2015. They're now being restored in France and will hit the railways in time for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

original travel restored

When, in 2015, French historian Arthur Mettetal was tasked with documenting the remaining original cars of the legendary Orient Express for France's national train service, SNCF, he came across an anonymous video of a train on YouTube. After some research and analysis, Mettetal discovered that 17 of the original Nostalgie-Istanbul-Orient-Express carriages were lined up at a remote train station between the border of Belarus and Poland. It took a few more years for the then-owner to agree to sell them to the Orient Express brand, which is currently co-owned by Accor , but, finally, in 2018, the train cars were returned to France. And yesterday, the company announced that the cars are set to welcome back travelers in 2024 after a meticulous renovation.

The original carriages, which include 12 sleeping cars, a restaurant car, three lounge cars, and a van, were in surprisingly good shape and still had their Morrison and Nelson marquetry, Lalique glass panels, and art deco motifs, according to Guillaume de Saint Lager, vice president of Orient Express, who spoke exclusively to Travel + Leisure . He explained that the renovation started a year ago, and in December 2021, French architect Maxime d'Angeac was tasked with restoring the legendary train to its former glory by interpreting Gilded Age décor for the modern traveler. The interiors of the first nine cars are set to be unveiled in December. They will include six sleeping carriages, a restaurant, a bar, and an "experiential salon." The remaining eight cars will be unveiled gradually by 2024.

While authenticity is a factor in the project, Saint Lager explained that reinterpreting the décor in a contemporary way is key.

"The brief to the designer was really to find this perfect balance between past, present, and future," he said. "Some guests will think that [the train] has been built in the 1930s. Others will see that it's a modern interpretation, but we like to play with the notion of time and to really blur the line between past and future."

The train will have three types of suites, including a Presidential suite will which take up an entire car. Each suite will have its own bathroom. While a chef has not been named for the culinary experiences, Saint Lager explained that the team is looking into old Orient Express menus for inspiration. The last public car, the salon, will host performances and events, and its décor will be inspired by dreamy winter gardens.

"This will be the magical car that will even break — in terms of style — with the other parts of the train. We want it to tell a story in itself," Saint Lager told T+L.

While the itinerary has not been finalized yet, but he added that the train would run between Istanbul and Paris.

"The rebirth of the Orient Express is a technological challenge, meeting scientific, artistic and technical criteria, where the entire project has been conceived as a work of art," Maxime D'Angeac, an avid book collector of many authors, including Agatha Christie novels, said in a press release.

"From the nuts and bolts stamped with Orient Express' signature to the innovative concept of the suites, an exact science of detail will allow travelers to rediscover the great splendor of the Orient Express," D'Angeac said. "Entrusted to the best artisans and decorators specializing in their unique fields, this embassy of French luxury will unveil a setting of absolute refinement, faithful to the art of tailoring. It will be an incomparable train travel experience, imagined through a contemporary vision of comfort and extreme luxury."

This classic set of cars made its inaugural trip in the 1980s and ran between Zurich and Istanbul. Before stopping service several years later, the train also traveled from Paris to Tokyo, its longest journey. The remodeled cars' first trip in this century will coincide with the 2024 Paris Olympics. It will also launch one year after a different Orient Express experience (by the same Accor-owned company), Orient Express La Dolce Vita , which is being designed by Dimorestudio and celebrates Italian style from the '60s and '70s.

New galley long-neck faucet. All plumbing gone through. New city water hook up. Gray and black holding is one tank. LP comfort heater was removed (before us), so a new heat source will be needed if desired (elec space heater or Mr Heater Portable Buddy?). Someone before us replaced the cushion covers and curtains with a fabulous, mid-century modern theme. Cook stove works. Two new propane tanks painted to match. The original front window awning/rock guard is included, but not pictured. Includes new custom awning with poles, and rock guard cover. Tires are good, no sidewalk cracking visible and lots of good tread. We greased the axle bearings. Clean Title. We repaired one roof leak due to a plumbing vent getting old, but no other noted rot. We did not do a frame-off, or complete skin-off, resto. This is an updated and repaired original vintage travel trailer.  $6,900. Paul 541-944-7541. Optional delivery available.  Timberline operated in Sandy, Oregon from mid 1960’s to mid 1970’s.  Owner/Operator Paul Kipers Jr. estimated they made about 4,000 travel trailers. And this is one of them 🙂

RV LIFE

A True Passion For Vintage Trailer Restoration

' src=

  • Maintenance, Modifications and Repairs

When most people see a rusty RV parked on cinderblocks in a grassy field, they usually don’t say to themselves, “ Now that one’s a winner! ” But in Colorado there’s one real estate agent who does and she’s having a ball giving old trailers new life with modern RVers who crave all things vintage.

vintage trailer restoration project

April’s passion for buying and selling vintage trailers is what she’s dubbed “Aluminitis” – an addiction to fixing up the aluminum trailers of yesterday.

“I love giving life back to them and digging out their stories,” says April Wantiez , a vintage trailer restoration authority in Fort Collins, CO. “It’s sort of like granting the ‘old horse put out to pasture’ an agile, pretty and worthy existence again.”

vintage trailer restoration project

Is this trailer a good candidate?

April fell in love with vintage trailers six years ago. Lacking the funds to pay a pro to restore her first trailer, she got to work. Today, April’s passion for buying and selling vintage trailers is what she’s dubbed “Aluminitis”–an addiction to fixing up the aluminum trailers of yesterday.

“Some of the wood and craftsmanship in certain trailers is amazing. These trailers were built by good hard working Americans and have a historic charm,” she says. April has owned more than two dozen vintage trailers since she began her part-time passion, but she doesn’t take on every project she sees.

Vintage trailer restoration lessons

vintage trailer restoration project

A project gone awry?

As a real estate agent by day, she knows that any diamond in the rough can have costly faults. When she stops to look at a candidate, she does her best to keep calm and look for hidden problems that could cost too much money to fix.

From the roof to the axles, restoring a vintage trailer calls for a sharp eye and powerful self-restraint. “I used to think they all could and need saving,” she explains. “However, now I’ve slowed down purchasing. I have five in my boneyard backyard I’ve not had much time to touch.”

The vintage trailer restoration projects she’s completed have taught her many lessons about what to look for and avoid in a trailer. Although she pays the pros to handle things like repacking wheel bearings and if necessary, glass replacement, she only purchases a trailer if she’s confident she can do most of the repair work herself. Through the years she’s also learned the best way to tame her budget is to keep things simple. For example she:

  • Draws the line at serious water damage. “Water damage is the number one flaw,” she says. Visual water damage is deceiving and she’s learned that usually there’s 30 to 40 percent more that isn’t visible to the naked eye. “If it has too much water damage where I know I’ll have to tear out complete walls or the ceiling (which will entail removing the exterior skin), I now walk away. Even from a free one.”
  • Avoids fully contained models. “ I have owned them and some families require them. To me, it just means more work so I keep things simple. All I search for these days is a place to put a portable potty and a means to refrigerate some food and beverages.”
  • Doesn’t really care about appliance colors. “I’ve had avocado green, brown, bright orange, sea foam green. Some people look for a trailer based on color of appliances. I could care less. I know I can decorate around it,” she says.

vintage trailer restoration project

The final product.

Once the mouse feces are cleaned out and the major renovation work is over, April gets into her favorite part of the job: decorating. “If it’s a 1950s or 1960’s with great wood interior and original interiors and appliances, I try and keep it as original as possible. I might ‘funk it up’ with pillows, curtains and décor,” she explains. In other cases, she says that anything goes. “My style and stash of staging décor is usually themed somewhat western, log cabin and cowgirl,” she says. “But I’ve had some that spoke to me differently so I’ve gone for a more retro style.”

If you’re dreaming about your own vintage trailer restoration project, April’s best advice is to ask for help from others, don’t be afraid to learn new skills and always keep the end result in mind.

“When you finally haul down the road and people rubberneck, honk, and holler, you will feel extreme joy and pride. When you wake up at a camp site and people are standing outside your door waiting so they can look inside and ask you questions—you will be proud. When you finally lay down to sleep for the first time in your ‘labor of love’, you will be given a new existence. A true rocky mountain high in my experience,” she says.

Take to the Skies in One of These Restored Vintage WWII Airplanes

Earn your wings and experience a slice of aviation history from the cockpit of a historic aircraft

Jennifer Nalewicki

Travel Correspondent

Boeing N2S

If you’ve ever dreamed of experiencing a slice of U.S. aviation history on board a retired military aircraft, get ready to earn your wings. From the rare Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber to the P-51D Mustang , which was originally developed for the Royal Air Force , a number of museums and aviation organizations across the nation are taking guests up into the clouds via refurbished aircraft—many of which once flew into battle during World War II. The best part? You don’t need military clearance to climb on board.

Vintage Flying Museum, Fort Worth, Texas

Superfortress

At any given time, this museum housed at Meacham International Airport in Fort Worth, Texas, has more than a dozen aircraft in various stages of restoration on display. But perhaps its most popular holding is FIFI , one of only two known Boeing B-29 Superfortress aircraft in the United States that are still in flight. At one time, the U.S. military used the 99-foot-long aircraft for administrative purposes before retiring it in 1958 to an aircraft graveyard in the California desert. In 1971, the rusting behemoth caught the eye of the Commemorative Air Force , an organization that refurbishes historic aircraft. Now, when it’s not making regular appearances at air shows nationwide as part of the CAF’s fleet of preserved and restored historic aircraft, it’s taking aviation junkies on once-in-a-lifetime flights alongside the museum’s growing collection of planes, which include a B-24, P-51 and C-45 .

History Flight, Marathon, Florida

Boeing N2S

Not a pilot? Not to worry. You can still enjoy the thrill of flight aboard—and while piloting—one of this nonprofit organization’s fleet of retired WWII warbirds. During flights on the  AT-6 Texan  (a plane used by airmen during training) and the Boeing N2S Stearman biplane (one of the first planes that airmen would pilot after training), pilots turn over the controls to passengers—under strict supervision, of course—to experience the cockpit firsthand. And, if you’re up for it, pilots will put certain aircraft through their paces in a series of acrobatic maneuvers such as loops, rolls and spirals.

Commemorative Air Force Southern California Wing, Camarillo, California

P-51D

Located at the Camarillo Airport about 60 miles west of Los Angeles, the Commemorative Air Force’s Southern California chapter offers rides on a number of retired aircraft, including a P-51D Mustang Fighter — a long-range, single occupant fighter-bomber, which the U.S. military used during WWII to escort bombers flying round trip between England and Germany—and a PT-19 Cornell Open Cockpit Trainer . The latter was built for use by the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan , a joint military operation between Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand during WWII.

Bay Aviation, Topping, Virginia

PT-19

Nearly every fighter pilot in WWII who was a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps, the now defunct aviation arm of the U.S. military, received his training in the cockpit of a PT-19 . Known for being lightweight and easy to handle, this model of plane was ideal for rookie pilots learning the ropes before going off to battle, since they had similar characteristics to combat aircraft. Today Bay Aviation , located at Hummel Field in Virginia, offers rides onboard a PT-19 from 1943, which took 11 years to restore. It’s one of only 98 left in the world that’s fully airworthy.

Iceland holidays in more detail

Who is iceland best for.

Iceland holidays are ideal for adventurers or those yearning for a taste of beautiful wilderness. It’s also perfect for families who want to appreciate fresh air and long summer days. Spend the long days exploring ice cream farms or travelling round the coast on the hunt for puffins with beaks as orange as the midnight sun and feathers the colour of the black sand beaches they reside on. In winter, Reykjavik’s Christmas lights illuminate the city, a wonder for youngsters who will most likely meet the 13 Yule Lads - festive trolls who are the Icelandic equivalent of Father Christmas. This is also the best time to keep your eyes peeled for the glistening wonder of the the Northern Lights . Iceland holidays are also perfect for teens who can let loose, hiking, snowmobiling or sledding with huskies.

What is life in Iceland like?

Iceland has a population of 320,000. That's it. That's the same as Nottingham alone. A third of those hardy Icelanders live in the capital, Reykjavik, making the rest of the country one of the emptiest in the world. As well as having one of the lowest population densities, Iceland is pretty much self-sufficient. The country meets most of its energy needs from natural geothermal power, thanks to the sheer power found on this volcanic island. As a result, pristine landscapes of fjords, mountains, glaciers, and moss-covered lava fields still dominate most of the island.

Which experiences is Iceland best for?

Explore untamed landscapes from dramatic coasts and black-sand beaches to snow-capped volcanoes and steaming hot springs. Cross vast fjord beds in a 4x4, go whale and puffin watching along the rocky coastline or traverse year-round over glistening glaciers. After all that adventure, you can take a long soak in the many steaming geothermal baths or slow the pace down visiting pretty fishing towns with local charm. Then there are the Northern Lights, best seen on a fun super Jeep (4x4s with massive wheels) adventure or tucked up in a cosy cabin in the Icelandic wilderness. Nothing can quite prepare you for this shimmering spectacle lighting up a clear night’s sky, as bright shades of pink, purple and green dance across the midnight sky.

What are the best ways to discover Iceland?

The most obvious starting point on any Iceland holidays should be Reykjavik and after a stint in the capital, we recommend hiring a car to explore the rest of the country at your leisure. We particularly love a Golden Circle or Silver Circle adventure. Where to stay? We have a handful of exciting and unusual hotels, all with wow factor, that are the ultimate base for your explorations. This could be a chic design hotel perfect for a boutique break or an adventure lodge-come-feat-of-architecture with floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Or base yourself out of a converted sheep farmhouse in wonderful isolation, from where you can go snowmobiling in the surrounding crisp white snow and afterwards hole up in the spa.

A special experience to do in Iceland:

When in Iceland, do as the Icelanders do and take the spa seriously. With saunas and geothermal baths at every turn, it’s almost an injustice not to pamper yourself. Take to a smoke sauna heated by a wood fire and if you’re feeling brave, follow tradition and get your heart pumping by rolling in the snow.

Where to go in Iceland:

Before you head out into the wild, your first stop will be Reykjavik, the most northerly capital in the world, and a place that looks and feels more like a small fishing village than a capital. The city has a very quirky charm all of its own, with a selection of funky hotels and bustling nightlife. The good news is that Reykjavik is also so small you'll never get FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) as you just wander five minutes around the corner to find another fun place to explore. You may even stumble across the Icelandic Phallological Museum, at which point you might want to cover the youngsters’ eyes. While you wander, it's also worth checking out the statue of explorer Leif Erikson outside the extraordinary Hallgrimskirkja church, which is designed to look like Iceland's basalt lava flows. A gift from the USA, the statue acknowledges that it was a Viking who actually discovered the Americas several hundred years before Christopher Columbus.

Snæfellsnes

Away from the capital, Snæfellsnes is a typical part of Iceland – a starkly beautiful peninsula jutting into the North Atlantic on Iceland’s western coast. Closely connected with the Norse Sagas, this region was also the birthplace of Mr Explorer Erikson himself, and the Snæfellsnes volcano is where Jules Verne’s adventurers journeyed to the centre of the world. Road trip along lava fields and stumble upon tiny red-roofed churches dotted sporadically across the countryside.

Another intriguing place to visit is Southern Iceland , home to yet more spectacular scenery, and the villainous volcano Eyjafjallajokull which caused so much air travel chaos in 2010. Snap an iconic shot of yourself in front of Skogafoss with its double rainbows before venturing along the coast to the infamous black beaches of Vic and Reynisfjara where you will get a feel of just how wild this Nordic country is. Diamond Beach is another otherworldly sight along the south coast. Huge clear-blue diamonds of ice coat the beach having made their way down from the looming Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Keep your eyes peeled for the bobbing head of an Icelandic seal or the impressive dorsal fin of an Orca emerging from the white, icy waves.

Vintage Restoration

Restoration vs. renovation.

Vintage Restoration of a Travel Trailer is the return to factory original. It is the perfect avenue for collectors and aficionados who have been able to secure an intact, original trailer, in relatively mint, complete condition. For many the idea of a full restoration of a vintage coach is similar to that of restoring a classic car. In some respects that is true. The difference is with vintage travel trailers being manufactured in limited production runs, and scarcity of units, original parts can be much more difficult to find. While some feel that factory original trailers carry a higher value, similar to all-original classic automobiles, often times the cost of a true restoration meets or exceeds the market value. The true value is in the use and enjoyment you get out of your coach.

The majority of our clientele choose Vintage Renovation . This is where we customize an original vintage coach, both the interior and exterior, to suit our client’s desires and needs. The result is the look and feel of a vintage travel trailer but with the functionality of any high end coach on the market today. The possibilities are endless. Builds range anywhere from a modern take on a classic coach with upgraded amenities such as self containment systems, bathrooms where there previously were none… to guest accommodations with hotel type amenities… to mobile businesses or marketing applications.

South Africa elections live results 2024: By the numbers

About 28 million people are registered to vote in national and provincial elections.

South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) is leading with more than a 40 percent share of the national vote after half of the ballots have been counted, a day after the country went to the polls for national and provincial  elections that are widely predicted to test the ANC’s 30-year rule.

The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) started counting votes soon after polling ended on Wednesday. The Democratic Alliance (DA), South Africa’s principal opposition party, is currently in second place.

Here is how the top four parties are doing, according to the latest updates from the IEC.

Which are the main parties in the race?

Four of the biggest players to watch out for in this year’s elections are the ANC, the DA, uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

INTERACTIVE - South Africa elections 2024 -major political parties-1716730781

Previous election results

The ANC has won all national elections since the end of apartheid in 1994 when Nelson Mandela became the country’s first Black president.

In 1994, the ANC won 62.5 percent of the vote. In 1999, it won 66.4 percent. In 2004, it reached its highest levels, clinching almost 70 percent of the vote. In 2009, it won nearly 66 percent, and in 2014, it won 62 percent.

In the last election in 2019, the ANC achieved its lowest margin of victory, winning 57.5 percent of the vote.

The DA has come second in the past five elections.

INTERACTIVE - South Africa elections - previous election results-1716730754

Parties in current National Assembly

The lower house of parliament is currently represented by 400 members of 14 political parties, allocated proportionally based on the votes each party received in the 2019 elections.

  • ANC: 230 seats (57.5 percent)
  • DA: 84 seats (21 percent)
  • EFF: 44 seats (11 percent)
  • Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP): 14 seats (3.5 percent)

Ten other parties make up the remaining 28 seats.

INTERACTIVE - South Africa elections 2024 - current national assembly-1716730760

How is the president elected?

South Africans do not directly vote for the president.

Instead, they elect the members of the National Assembly, who then elect the president by a simple majority – 201 or more votes determine the presidency.

If the ANC secures the majority, President Cyril Ramaphosa, 71, is likely to be re-elected as president to serve his second and final five-year term.

INTERACTIVE - South Africa elections 2024 - Ramaphosa and ANC-1716730770

What if no party receives a majority?

Opinion polls suggest the governing ANC, which is hovering at about  40 percent support, may lose its majority.

If this happens, the ANC will need to make a deal with other parties to form a coalition government. The choice of coalition partner will depend on the support needed to cross the 50 percent mark.

Unless the ANC performs much worse than expected, there is a slim chance it could be completely removed from power.

When will the final results be announced?

In the last national election held on May 8, 2019, the final results were announced three days later.

However, this year, with one more ballot to count, verifying results may take longer.

The IEC says it will announce the election results on Sunday.

Cucina in Palm Beach takes down outdoor space after racking up a slew of code violations

T he highly popular Palm Beach restaurant Cucina has pulled its outdoor patio seating after being hit with a slew of code violations for the area that was built on a section of its parking lot and included, among other things, 51 unpermitted seats.

Dubbed Cucina Beach, the patio-styled outdoor dining area was built in the spring of 2020 in response to the social distancing policies followed during the COVID-19 pandemic after the Palm Beach Town Council passed a provision that allowed eateries to temporarily add or expand outdoor seating.

When the provision ended in September 2022 , Cucina, located at 257 Royal Poinciana Way, said it was not interested in applying for the permanent outdoor seating program, but continued to operate the space. That lasted until February, when a resident’s complaint alerted officials to the unpermitted space, code enforcement officer John Moriarty said during the Code Enforcement Board’s May 23 meeting.

More: Northern lights may light up U.S. skies, including Florida, in June: 5 things to know

Moriarty, who visited the site, said the outdoor dining area featured multiple unpermitted structures, including an outdoor bar and pergola on the patio’s west side, as well as unpermitted fake grass. “There’s all kinds of turf put back there, and a (golf) putting green,” Moriarty said. “The whole parking lot has been filled up with potted plants to create some kind of a garden effect.”

The patio’s 51 seats also violated the number approved for Cucina by the town, Moriarty said. Cucina also violated its off-street parking requirements by reducing the on-site parking offered to employees from 22 spots to six, he added.

“Where we have in town an enormous parking problem, this is adding to that big time,” code board chair Brian Majtlis said of the latter violation.

Board members were taken back by the amount of unpermitted construction. “This is the longest description I’ve seen for a case,” board member Martin Klein said.

More: We've had it: Florida homeowners are sick of faulty solutions to rising insurance costs

While critical of the unpermitted construction, vice chair Scotch Peloso, who lives blocks away from Cucina, noted that the restaurant reached out to residents before starting the patio's construction in 2020.

Attorney James Crowley, who represented Cucina, told the board the restaurant would heed his advice and dismantle the patio space. “They hired me to get permits for what was back there, and I told them that was probably not going to happen,” Crowley said, noting that the 51 chairs had been removed by the board’s May 23 meeting.

Crowley asked the board to give the restaurant more than the usual 30 days to come into compliance, to allow Cucina enough time to apply for any permits needed to restripe the lot’s parking spaces.

With Moriarty supporting the extension, the board ordered Cucina to pay an administrative fee of $150 within 30 days and gave it Sept. 16 to come into compliance. The dismantling of the patio started Tuesday, with workers removing the fake grass and foliage.

Cucina did not respond to an email sent Tuesday requesting comment.

Diego Diaz Lasa is a journalist at the  Palm Beach Daily News , part of the USA TODAY Florida Network. You can reach him at  [email protected] .

This article originally appeared on Palm Beach Post: Cucina in Palm Beach takes down outdoor space after racking up a slew of code violations

Beyond the unpermitted construction and fake grass, code enforcement officer John Moriarty said the patio's 51 seats violated the seating limits defined under the restaurant's approved special exception use.

Cross restored to Notre Dame cathedral more than 5 years after fire

May 25, 2024 / 7:54 PM EDT / CBS/AP

The cross at the apse of Notre-Dame de Paris , which survived the devastating 2019 fire, was reinstalled atop the cathedral's framework Friday after a meticulous restoration by artistic ironworkers from Normandy.

The imposing cross, spanning 40 feet and weighing about 3,300 pounds, is the only element of the choir roof that resisted the flames.

"The cross fell really early in the fire," Vincent Combe, project manager for Metal Roofing Renovation, told CBS News. "So we were really lucky because the cross didn't burn a lot, she just fell just…it's a miracle."

Notre Dame cross restored

The cross was taken to an ironworks in Normandy for complex and delicate repairs. Architect Axelle Ponsonnet was involved in checking it could be repaired to the original 19th century design by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc.

"We were really happy to discover that we would be able to use it, and forge it again, and work with the metal that was here, because the cross was designed by Viollet-le-Duc, so it's a very important piece of Notre Dame," Ponsonnet told CBS News.

Approximately 250 companies and hundreds of craftsmen, architects, and professionals have contributed to the ongoing restoration project, aiming for the cathedral's reopening on Dec. 8, 2024.

The fire, which occurred on April 15, 2019, caused the collapse of Notre-Dame's spire and part of its roof. Five years later, the restoration has made significant progress, including the reinstallation of the spire's lead-covered needle .

The 2019 fire was a significant blow to the cathedral, a UNESCO world heritage site and a symbol of Christianity that welcomed 12 million visitors each year.

Haiti Names New Prime Minister to Try to Lead Country Out of Crisis

Garry Conille is taking on the office just ahead of the arrival of a Kenyan-led international police force charged with helping restore order to the violence-torn nation.

  • Share full article

A close-up of Garry Conille, wearing a dark suit and glasses.

By David C. Adams

An experienced international aid official, Garry Conille, was unanimously appointed prime minister of Haiti by a Presidential Transition Council on Tuesday, which tasked him with leading the country out of its current crisis until elections for a new president can be held.

Mr. Conille will take on his new role just as a U.N.-backed security mission led by Kenyan police is scheduled to begin operations in the violence-torn Caribbean nation, which is battling to restore political stability and tackle armed gangs who control large parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Fluent in English, French and Creole, Mr. Conille’s credentials include a 25-year career working for the United Nations and other aid agencies. He also briefly led Haiti as prime minister over a decade ago during another period of crisis following the devastating 2010 earthquake.

But Mr. Conille has spent many of the last few years outside the country, and his perhaps rusty domestic political skills are sure to be tested by the highly volatile situation he will encounter as prime minister.

He will not, however, have to face any political battles with Haiti’s fractious Parliament, which has sat vacant for months because of the country’s inability to hold elections amid the violence and turmoil.

“He is a safe choice to appease the international community, but he’s also spent the last two decades working mostly outside Haiti in the U.N. system,” said Jake Johnston, a Haiti expert at the Center for Economic and Policy Research.

A doctor by training, he also received a master’s degree in public health from the University of North Carolina. Mr. Conille helped coordinate Haiti’s reconstruction efforts after the cataclysmic 2010 earthquake, which the Haitian government says killed 316,000 people.

Then, in 2011, he became prime minister, but he resigned only four months later after he clashed with then-President Michel Martelly over an investigation into corruption involving contracts to rebuild the country.

Mr. Conille, 58, succeeds Michel Patrick Boisvert, who was named interim prime minister after Ariel Henry resigned the office in late April. Mr. Henry was forced to step down after he was effectively locked out of the country by the gang violence that closed Port-au-Prince’s international airport and prevented him from returning from a trip to Kenya to sign an agreement for the U.N.-backed security mission.

The Kenyan police officers are expected to head to Haiti next month with a daunting mission to help restore order to a country where more than 4,000 people have been killed or injured in gang-related violence this year alone.

U.S. military planes filled with civilian contractors and supplies have already begun landing in Haiti, paving the way for the seven-nation security mission, funded in large part by a commitment of $300 million by the Biden administration.

Mr. Conille will assume responsibility for running the country alongside the transition council, which was appointed to fill the void after Mr. Henry’s ouster. The nine-member transition council holds some presidential powers and was appointed to steer the country until elections can be held and a new president takes office, which is planned to happen by early 2026.

Haiti has been without a president since the assassination in July 2021 of Jovenel Moïse by armed men who broke into his bedroom and gunned him down in front of his wife. His murder is still under separate investigations in Haiti and Florida, with a trial scheduled to take place in Miami in January.

Five people, including two former soldiers in Colombia, have already pleaded guilty in the United States and been sentenced to life in prison.

Over the last 25 years, Mr. Conille has worked with the United Nations, serving in Africa and the Caribbean, and has also held senior positions with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. His most recent post, since January 2023, was serving as regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean at UNICEF, the U.N. Children’s Fund.
