- Trivia Bruce Horak , the actor who plays Hemmer, is legally blind, just like his character's species, the Aenar, who are also blind.
- Goofs There are some rank insignia mistakes. Number One is introduced as "Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley" yet she is wearing the rank insignia of a full commander: two full stripes. A Lieutenant Commander's rank insignia is a full stripe under a thin stripe (in TOS it is a full stripe and a staggered stripe). It is not uncommon for a ship's first officer to be a Lt. Commander if they have not been in the position long. Spock at this point is a Lieutenant but he is wearing Lieutenant Commander's stripes; a Lieutenant just has one stripe. La'an is the ship's chief of security and the ship's second officer. She is also wearing Lt. Commander stripes but is addressed as a Lieutenant, but it would make more sense for her to be a Lieutenant Commander. Either way both of their rank insignia are not matching the rank they are addressed by. Ortegas is addressed as a Lieutenant but is wearing Lieutenant Commander's strips. A Lieutenant Commander may be addressed as a Commander or Lieutenant Commander but never as just a Lieutenant, so either her rank insignia or the manner she is addressed by the rest of the crew is in error.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: how to watch, episodes and everything we know
Where are Captain Pike and the Starship Enterprise crew boldly going next?
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is just one of many Paramount Plus entries in the streaming service's expansive Star Trek universe. Other Star Trek shows on the streaming service include Star Trek: Discovery , Picard , Star Trek: Lower Decks and Prodigy .
Following the success of Star Trek: Discovery and the popularity among Trekkies of a certain Captain Pike (though we suspect actor Anson Mount’s jawline has much to do with it), the Star Trek studio finally gave in to fan demand and greenlit this latest spin-off.
Strange New Worlds has now completed its initial mission (season), but here's everything you need to know about the new series? Hit it.
How to watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
All episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are available to stream exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US and UK. The Paramount Plus original series is available to all subscribers to the streaming service, whether they are signed up for the ad-supported or ad-free version.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode 10, the season 1 finale, debuts on Paramount Plus in the US on July 7.

Other Star Trek shows like Star Trek: Discovery ’s fourth season , are moving from their original UK home on Netflix to Paramount Plus.

They try to re-route the comet, only to find that an ancient alien relic buried on the comet’s icy surface is somehow stopping them. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 9, "All Those Who Wander" "The U.S.S. Enterprise crew comes face-to-face with their demons – and scary monsters too – when their landing party is stranded on a barren planet with a ravenous enemy."
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 10, "A Quality of Mercy" "In the season one finale, just as Captain Pike thinks he’s figured out how to escape his fate, he’s visited by his future self, who shows him the consequences of his actions."
Will there be a Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2?
Affirmative. In January 2022, five months before season 1 had even aired, Paramount confirmed a season 2 was going ahead. Only a few months later they assigned their Captain Kirk ( The Vampire Diaries ’ Paul Wesley) and began shooting.
We don't know yet when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 is going to premiere on Paramount Plus.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds plot
While Strange New Worlds is an all new adventure in the Star Trek universe for the uninitiated (unlike Picard for example), there’s a bit of background it’s good to be aware of. The show’s main man, Captain Pike, was Star Trek ’s very first captain, appearing in a long-unseen pilot episode of The Original Series entitled "The Cage" (the episode finished filming in 1965 but was not seen by audiences until 1986, via home video) set in the year 2254.
William Shatner’s iconic Captain James T. Kirk then took over, with Pike (having suffered a debilitating accident) popping up again mid-way through season 1 for a farewell double-bill appearance. Shenanigans with fan favorite Lieutenant Spock ensue, leaving Pike to live out a pain-free life on the planet Talos IV from the year 2267 onwards.
How is this relevant? Well, Strange New Worlds takes place in the years between Pike’s adventures in Discovery ’s second season, circa 2257, and his final days in The Original Series , so there’s a lot of ground to cover and not a lot of precedent, which we think bodes well for some out-of-the-borg-cube thinking.
Series co-creator Akiva Goldsman confirmed Strange New Worlds will take on a near-fully episodic approach (heads up The Next Generation and Voyager fans), confirming there will be, "room to meet new aliens, see new ships, visit new cultures." The one thing that will break the episodic structure? Character arcs.
The poster and trailer show Pike’s transition from his idyllic home in the Mojave desert to the bridge of the Enterprise. We know his two trusty subordinates from Discovery — Science Officer Spock and First Officer 'Number One' (real name Una Chin-Riley) — will be by his side.
Some iconic legacy characters return here too, including Nurse Chapel, who assisted Dr. McCoy in The Original Series sickbay and Nyota Uhura (famously played by Nichelle Nichols in The Original Series and Thandi Newton in the alternate timeline movies of 2009, 2013 and 2016).
There’s also a new addition we’re particularly excited about, Chief of Security La’an Noonien-Singh, whose surname will trigger Trekkie memories of Ceti eels (think hard-skinned killer leeches) and one of the best space showdowns in Star Trek — perhaps even sci-fi film — history. Whether or not she’s related to Khan Noonien Singh, a genetically-engineered superhuman and the show’s most memorable villain, is yet to be seen, but it’s certainly a thrilling prospect (for the avoidance of doubt, we’re referring to Khan in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan , not the alternate timeline Khan of Star Trek Into Darkness ).
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast
The headline cast here remain those from Discovery , namely Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn as Pike, Spock and Number One. Jess Bush plays Nurse Christine Chapel, Celia Rose Gooding takes on Cadet Nyota Uhura and Christina Chong plays La’an Noonien-Singh. Pilot Lt. Erica Ortegas is played by Melissa Navia and sickbay is manned by Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga. Bruce Horak will feature as a recurring guest star as Andorian officer Hemmer.
Is there a trailer?
Yes, Anson Mount unveiled it to the internet on his Twitter feed on April 3, 2022. Check it out below:

How to watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as it returns for season 2
Boldly go on, then.
Set between the early seasons of Discovery and The Original Series , Star Trek: Strange New Worlds sees Discovery 's Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn returning to the USS Enterprise as Captain Christopher Pike, science officer Spock and first officer Una Chin-Riley ('Number One') respectively.
Strange New Worlds ' cast also features Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura (who is a young cadet when we catch up with her here), Jess Bush as a younger version of the ship's nurse Christine Chapel, and Babs Olusanmokun as a younger Dr Joseph M'Benga.
They're joined by Christina Chong 's chief of security La'an Noonien-Singh, plus Melissa Navia as Enterprise helmsman Erica Ortegas. And season two will also introduce James T Kirk himself as a recurring character, played by Paul Wesley following his cameo in the first season finale.
A key theme that has run through Strange New Worlds so far is Pike, having experienced a terrifying vision of his own future, pondering whether he can change his own destiny and that of others around him. The second season will also feature a crossover with animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks .
Here's how you can watch as the show returns to streaming.
How to watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' second season premieres today ( Thursday, June 15 ), streaming exclusively on Paramount+ in countries including the UK and the US. New episodes will arrive every Thursday after that, with the season finale expected to premiere on August 17.
In the UK, new Paramount+ customers can enjoy a 7-day free trial of the service, and after that it will cost £6.99 per month, or £69.90 per year .
Pricing for the service in the US differs , depending on how you feel about adverts and whether you want to pay extra for the Showtime programming add-on. There are four main options:
- Essential tier: $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year
- Premium tier: $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year
- Essential tier with Showtime: $11.99 per month or $119.99 per year
- Premium tier with Showtime: $11.99 per month, or $119.99 per year
All US plans open up access to a vast library of TV shows and movies, plus live sport such as NFL and men's UEFA Champions League coverage, and 24/7 news via CBSN. Note that Essential tiering doesn't include your local live CBS station.
The Premium tier has very limited ads (with some appearing in live TV and "a few shows" according to Paramount itself). It also opens up download access and enables you to watch your local CBS station live.
As you'd expect, adding Showtime to your plan gives you access to its library.
The TV shows and movies you can watch vary slightly depending on where you are in the world. But in the UK, titles include Yellowstone , Mayor of Kingstown , Yellowjackets , Kiefer Sutherland's Rabbit Hole , and RuPaul's Drag Race spin-off Queen of the Universe .
UK customers will also find Showtime dramas like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Naomie Harris' The Man Who Fell to Earth , and The First Lady – starring Viola Davis as Michelle Obama, Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford, and Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt – on the service. As mentioned above, US customers can access these by paying an additional fee as part of their monthly or yearly subscription.
And, of course, you'll be able to enjoy lots of other Star Trek titles including classic movies, plus films ranging from the Top Gun movies to the Scream series.
In the US, customers can also enjoy selected CBS Sports programming including men's Serie A , UEFA Champions League and Europa League football (all of which sit on BT Sport in the UK), plus NFL coverage, Women's Super League football, golf tournaments including The Masters, and Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket.

Star Trek: Prodigy, Paramount+ Will Be Available to Sky Customers in Europe in 2022
Thanks to a new deal between ViacomCBS and Comcast’s Sky streaming platform, Star Trek: Prodigy and the Paramount+ streaming service are coming to much of Europe in 2022.
The United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria will get to watch Paramount+ content, which includes all Star Trek television shows (but, as of this publication, only the Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek: Into Darkness movies), as part of the Sky streaming platform.
No exact date was given for the Paramount+ content to land on Sky in 2022.
“We are thrilled to expand our long-standing partnership with Sky to continue delivering ViacomCBS’ leading portfolio of premium entertainment brands to Sky customers and importantly bring Paramount+ to new audiences in all Sky markets,” said Raffaele Annecchino, President and Chief Executive Officer, ViacomCBS Networks International via a press release . “This transformative distribution deal is key to accelerating our global ambitions in streaming while also supporting Sky’s strategic objectives to better serve audiences with greater flexibility in how they consume our content across all platforms.”
Titles that will become available through 2022 in the UK, Ireland, Italy and GSA include a collection of scripted, exclusive Paramount+ Originals and exciting new takes on iconic franchises, including HALO , The Offer and the new iCarly series. As the international home of SHOWTIME, the service will offer The Man Who Fell to Earth, Ripley, Super Pumped, and American Gigolo, in addition to popular titles from ViacomCBS, such as Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, Star Trek: Prodigy, and MTV Unplugged. The service will also feature a collection of new movie premieres and fan favorites from Paramount Pictures such as films from the Mission Impossible and Transformer franchises.
Whenever Paramount+ does launch on Sky in 2022, Sky Cinema subscribers will get it for free. All other Sky customers can subscribe to Paramount+ as an add-on to their account.
Paramount+ is steadily growing its audience; by the end of this year, it will be available in 25 markets, expanding to 45 markets by the end of 2022. That’s good news for Star Trek fans, as more people will be able to catch the slate of recent and upcoming Star Trek shows – a slate that is only expected to grow thanks to a recent contract extension between Star Trek showrunner Alex Kurtzman and CBS.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ UK Airdate: Later Than Hoped
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the highly anticipated prequel series featuring the classic characters of Spock and Captain Pike, is coming to the UK, and will be available on the Paramount+ streaming service.
The bad news for UK fans: We can confirm that Strange New Worlds will be exclusive to Paramount+, so you will have to wait more than a month – the show is launching in the US on May 5, but Paramount+ is coming to the UK on June 22, 2022 .
Until then, the show won’t be available on any other streaming services or VOD stores in the UK, such as Amazon’s Prime Video.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a 10-episode prequel series that takes place before Star Trek – The Original Series , and follows the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ), his Number One ( Rebecca Romijn ) and Spock ( Ethan Peck ).
These characters were originally conceived as part of the original Star Trek series back in the 60s, with Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike, Majel Barrett as Number One, and Leonard Nimoy as Spock. Following the unsuccessful pilot, Hunter was eventually replaced by William Shatner as the Captain of the Enterprise – James T. Kirk .
The modern incarnation of these characters was first introduced on Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery. Following positive reactions from critics and fans, a full spin-off series, with these characters, was announced – which is how Star Trek: Strange New Worlds came to be.
Unlike the other two new Star Trek shows ( Discovery and Picard ) that have very linear season-long stories, Strange New Worlds will be similar to the original series in that every episode will have a standalone story (also known as ‘Monster of The Week’ episodes), which will often conclude by the end of the episode.
Paramount+ is a streaming service that started as CBS All Access, in the US, in 2014. From its early days, the channel also produced original shows, such as The Good Wife spin-off The Good Fight , and Star Trek: Discovery .
In 2021, CBS All Access changed its name to Paramount+, following the merger with Viacom, bringing in content from additional partners, such as Showtime, Comedy Central and Paramount Pictures.
Paramount+ will be launching in the UK on June 22, at a cost of £6.99/month or £69.90/year , after a 7-days trial.
Star Trek fan site TrekCore spoke to executive producer Alex Kurtzman about the international release of Strange New Worlds , which is bound to disappoint some of the fans:

Star Trek Shows In The UK
In the US, all Star Trek shows (the classic ones and the new ones) are available to stream on Paramount+.
In the UK, things are a bit more complicated – for now. The older programmes ( The Original Series , TNG, Voyager, Deep Space 9 and Enterprise ) are currently available on Netflix UK.
Star Trek: Discovery used to be available on Netflix (in the UK and around the world – except the US), but right before Season 4’s premiere, all seasons were removed from the service. To appease the angry fans, the Season 4 was then streamed live in the UK on Pluto TV , and was also available to buy on Amazon’s Prime Video VOD store .
But wait, there’s more – both seasons of Star Trek: Picard, the sequel series to Star Trek: The Next Generation featuring Patrick Stewart, are streaming in the UK on Amazon’s Prime Video.
With a third season coming next year, it remains to be seen whether it will remain on Prime Video – or move over to Paramount+ in the UK.
The two first seasons of the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks series are also on Prime Video , with a third season returning in Summer 2022. We don’t know yet whether it will come directly to Paramont+, or remain on Prime Video.

They did this with other franchises like N.C.I.S. had different seasons on multiple channels at the same time.

Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise
Here's what's ahead for Star Trek.
It’s a golden era for Star Trek tv shows, as the franchise is churning out more content than ever before. Fans with a Paramount+ subscription can stream a plethora of old and new content from one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.
There’s a ton of new Star Trek content coming in the future, including the debut of a new show as well as the return of all the ones fans already know well. For those who need a breakdown of what all to expect, look no further because here’s where and when all the new Trek will arrive in 2023 and beyond. There’s even some information on planned shows that aren’t quite ready yet, but hopefully, we’ll see them soon enough.
Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Premiering On April 4th 2024
Captain Michael Burnham and the crew are back, and based on what we've seen and heard about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 so far, some changes are on the way. Season 5 will see the crew race against others in an attempt to secure an ancient power, and will apparently have a tonal shift that will skew more toward action and adventure. We also learned that this coming season will be the final adventure , as Paramount+ decided to end the series after this coming season. The final season will kick off in April and, fingers crossed, leave an avenue open for more stories with these characters in the 32nd century.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - In Production
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for Season 3, and is currently filming for the upcoming season. It's likely the season will kick off with the second part of the adventure started in the Season 2 finale . Pike must decide whether or not he's going to listen to Starfleet and retreat to avoid further conflict with the Gorn or to stay and try to save the kidnapped crew members. I have a hunch I know what decision he'll make, but I'm also very invested in seeing if Scotty will remain with the crew and what other adventures will come as well.
Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - Coming In 2024
Paramount+ originally renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for Season 2, but announced later that it had been canceled alongside other shows on the platform. While the news was a bummer to many and encouraged responses from stars like Kate Mulgrew , there is a silver lining. After some talk with other companies, Paramount managed to negotiate a deal where the series will transition over to Netflix , and Season 2 will release over there. At this time, it's unknown whether or not this will lead to more seasons of Prodigy , but fans are thankful they'll at least get to see the season that was being worked on coming up in 2024.
Section 31 Movie - Production Underway
Section 31 was one of the first Star Trek spinoffs announced after Discovery , and yet it took the longest to get off the ground. The series was supposed to Michelle Yeoh ’s Phillipa Georgiou and her efforts in the secret ops Starfleet faction that does the jobs that others in the organization would rather not know about. Other former Discovery stars, like Shazad Latif, were involved at one point, but some believed the odds of it happening aren't great after Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win .
It turns out Yeoh was interested in making it happen, and Paramount+ decided to alter the idea to a movie . Fans are excited about the project all the same, and ready to see Michelle Yeoh back in her role. Production on the film is officially underway, and it's looking like a premiere sometime in late 2024 to 2025 is likely.

Starfleet Academy - Production Starting In 2024
Alex Kurtzman revealed not long ago that Star Trek is actively working on another new live-action series , and it’s going to be set at Starfleet Academy. Of course, we don’t know exactly what era this series is set to take place during or who is going to star in it yet. We don’t really know much of anything, though it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery did write off its character Tilly when she took an offer at Starfleet Academy. The episode where that happened seemed like it could be a backdoor pilot for the show, but again, we have no idea. We do know that the writer's room is underway, but details are scant beyond that.
As shown above, there’s still a ton of Star Trek on the way in 2024, and beyond. The only way to watch these shows is with a Paramount+ subscription , which is totally worth picking up with the increasing amount of shows and movies available to watch.

Star Trek streaming guide: Where to watch the Star Trek movies and TV shows online
Our Star Trek streaming guide will allow you to go boldly where you've never gone before, without getting off your couch.
How to stream the Star Trek Movies in the US
How to stream the star trek tv shows in the us, how to stream the star trek movies in the uk, how to stream the star trek tv shows in the uk.
Here's our Star Trek streaming guide, so you know where to go boldly where you've never gone before... Without leaving your sofa. We've come up with this Star Trek streaming guide because since the first ever episode aired back in 1966, there's been a huge number of additions into the franchise.
Star Trek is currently in a bit of a purple patch for content as Paramount Plus , which is the home of all things Star Trek, is responsible for several new shows in recent years. But, it's not just new content, you'll also find where to stream the classics both movies and TV series below.
Before, Star Trek content was scattered all around different streaming services and searching for what you wanted to watch could feel like hunting for a cloaked Bird of Prey. However, these days you're able to stream all Star Trek content out there on Paramount Plus. However, we do have round-ups of the best sci-fi movies and TV shows on Netflix , Disney Plus and Amazon if you want to check them out.
You can also check out our take on the Star Trek movies, ranked so you know which movies to beam up onto your device. While Paramount Plus has everything Star Trek out there, you can find the odd bit of content on other platforms. So, below you'll find where you can watch what, regardless of where you're based, in our Star Trek streaming guide.
The Star Trek movies can be divided into three tidy groups: the original cast, the Next Generation cast, and the reboot cast. All of them can be found on Paramount+. However, Paramount+ isn't the only place you can stream the movies and in some cases you can rent or buy from places such as Amazon .
Here’s how to stream the Star Trek movies in the U.S., in order of release:
Star Trek: The Motion Picture — Paramount+ Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan — Paramount+ Star Trek III: The Search for Spock — Paramount+ Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home — Paramount+ Star Trek V: The Final Frontier — Paramount+ Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country — Paramount+ Star Trek: Generations — Paramount+ Star Trek: First Contact — Paramount+ Star Trek: Insurrection — Paramount+ , Spectrum Star Trek: Nemesis — Paramount+ Star Trek (2009) — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek Into Darkness — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek Beyond — Paramount+ , DIRECTV , Freevee
When it comes to Star Trek on the small screen, you can find them all in one place. Paramount+ not only has every episode of every legacy Trek show, it’s also the home of all the new Star Trek programming, such as Picard and Strange New Worlds. If you’re a Trekkie, you absolutely want to have Paramount+ to keep up with the object of your affection. A word of warning though, other streaming platforms may only have select episodes or series to stream.
Star Trek: The Original Series — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek: The Next Generation — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek: Deep Space Nine — Paramount+ , Sling , Spectrum Star Trek: Voyager — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek: Enterprise — Paramount+ Star Trek: Discovery — Paramount+ , DIRECTV Star Trek: Picard — Paramount+ Star Trek: Short Treks — Paramount+ Star Trek: Lower Decks — Paramount+ Star Trek: Prodigy — Paramount+ , DIRECTV , FuboTV , Spectrum Star Trek: The Animated Series — Paramount+ Star Trek: Strange New Worlds — Paramount+
Now that Paramount+ has arrived in the U.K, streaming Star Trek is a lot easier. You can view most of the movies on the streaming platform. Star Trek Beyond is the exception but that can be found on Amazon Prime. If you're not prepared to subscribe to Paramount+, the movies are available to rent or buy from a number of different platforms.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture — Paramount+ Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan — Paramount+ Star Trek III: The Search for Spock — Paramount+ Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home — Paramount+ Star Trek V: The Final Frontier — Paramount+ Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country — Paramount+ Star Trek: Generations — Paramount+ Star Trek: First Contact — Paramount+ Star Trek: Insurrection — Paramount+ Star Trek: Nemesis — Paramount+ Star Trek (2009) — Paramount+ , Amazon Prime Star Trek Into Darkness — Paramount+ , Amazon Prime Star Trek Beyond — Amazon Prime
Now that Paramount+ has reached those across the pond, the U.K. can enjoy streaming Star Trek shows as well. Netflix is also another great option to fulfil your Trekkie viewing needs, especially if you're interested in checking out Star Trek: The Animated Series, which is exclusive to Netflix.
However, for the likes of Picard and Lower Decks, you’ll have to hop on over to Amazon Prime. It's worth noting that platforms such as SkyGo may only have a select number of episodes or series to stream.

There hasn’t been a Star Trek movie since Star Trek Beyond , which was released in 2016. In recent years, Trek primarily has lived on the small screen, boldly finding new life thanks to numerous streaming shows on Paramount+, among them Star Trek Discovery , Picard and Strange New Worlds . Efforts to relaunch the film side, including reuniting the Abrams Trek cast that included Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana and Simon Pegg, among others, have ended up stranded on rocky alien shores. Paramount is also understood to still be developing a fourth Trek to feature that cast that is being described as the final chapter for this crew.

Star Trek III: The Search For Spock Returning To Cinemas For 40th Anniversary – New Poster Exclusive
Trekkers, get ready to beam back up to your local cineplex. A classic Star Trek film is about to be given a sparkly new re-release, returning in 4K and ready to prove – once and for all – that the ‘odd-numbered Trek movies are the bad ones’ rule is far from hard and fast. Yes, 1984’s Star Trek III: The Search For Spock turns 40 this year, and to mark that occasion the film will be heading back to the big screen. Along with the re-release, the film has a brand new retro-styled poster from Matt Ferguson, which you can see exclusively here:
And here's the quad poster, for all the fellow Brits:
If you’ve been following Ferguson’s work, be sure to file this one alongside his designs for Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan . As for The Search For Spock , it’s the first film in the series to have been directed by Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy – and, following the tragic conclusion of Wrath Of Khan , sees Captain Kirk heading off on… well, a search for Spock. Get ready for Genesis planets, resurrections, and Christopher Lloyd as a Klingon. Great Scott! The film will be heading to UK cinemas on 14 June – so there’s not long to wait.
So, set your phasers to cinemagoing, pore over all the lovely details of that gorgeous new poster – and warm up your space whales in case Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home gets its own re-release in two years time.
'Star Trek III: The Search for Spock' Is Returning to Theaters, But There’s a Catch
Here's how you can see the 'Star Trek' classic on the big screen this summer.
The Big Picture
- Star Trek III: The Search For Spock returns to U.K. theaters for its 40th anniversary.
- The film made $76 million domestically in 1984 with divisive reviews but strong performances from the cast.
- Despite the U.K. release only, there is hope for a U.S. release soon, giving fans a chance to see the iconic film in theaters in 2024.
Not long after Star Wars: The Phantom Menace returned to theaters for its 25th anniversary and made waves at the box office, another iconic sci-fi franchise is following in its footsteps. Empire Magazine officially revealed that Star Trek III: The Search For Spock will be re-released in theaters to celebrate the film's 40th anniversary. The report is also accompanied by a new poster from Matt Ferguson , aka Cakes Comics, who has partnered with other major movie franchises such as Star Wars and Planet of the Apes for posters in the past.
The Search For Spock initially premiered in theaters on June 1, 1984, and brought in an impressive haul of $76 million domestically, including an opening weekend of $16 million, which adjusted for inflation computes to a $216 million domestic total and $45 million opening weekend in 2024. For comparison, Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong , the two biggest movies of the year so far, opened with around $80-$85 million domestically earlier this year. Star Trek III: The Search For Spock has been divisive among fans in the 40 years since its release, and lands as the eighth-highest-rated Star Trek movie out of 13 on Rotten Tomatoes , with a 76% score from critics and a 64% rating from audiences.
The only catch is that, as of now, Star Trek III: The Search For Spock is only scheduled to re-release in theaters in the U.K. It's unknown at this time if or when a U.S. release will be announced, but given the franchise has passionate fans all over the world, it's possible that an announcement is coming soon. This will be the first time since its 1984 release that The Search For Spock is back in theaters, and there are surely young and old Star Trek fans across generations who would jump at the chance to see the film in theaters in 2024.
Who Stars in 'Star Trek III: The Search for Spock'?
Star Trek III: The Search For Spock returned the previous film's iconic cast members, such as William Shatner as the legendary Captain Kirk , Leonard Nimoy (who also directed the film) as Spock, and DeForest Kelley as McCoy. The film also rounded out a strong supporting cast which consists of James Doohan as Scotty, Walter Koenig as Chekov, George Takei as Sulu, and Nichelle Nichols as Uhura. While opinions on the film are split, particularly about some rocky special effects, the one thing that has garnered universal appreciation for Star Trek III: The Search For Spock is the impressive performances across the board.
Star Trek III: The Search For Spock returns to U.K. theaters on June 14. Check out the new poster above and stay tuned to Collider for future updates on the re-release schedule, and stream the film on Max in the meantime.

“If I had a magic button… I’d push that button today”: One Marvel Show May Have Smashed Star Trek: Discovery Director’s Dream of a Picard Sequel Series
T he world of Star Trek has gifted us with unlimited access to intergalactic adventures, with every chapter taking us to a new frontier of space exploration among the stars. Packed with delightful missions, strange worlds, unpredictable species, and interstellar travel, the franchise has driven the audienceʼs imagination with brand-new possibilities for a potential-filled universe occupied by stories and experiences that can only be found hidden within the wildest imaginations of a mad scientist.
Alex Kurtzman Plans an Escape Route From USS Discovery
Since 2017, the Star Trek universe has rained chaos and mayhem over the franchise’s fans by establishing an entirely new chapter of Star Trek lore rather than the one we’ve been familiar with for the past half-century. Throughout the 5 seasons of Star Trek: Discovery , absurd storylines drilled so many irreversible plot holes into the series that USS Discovery sank faster than even the ill-fated Titanic.
However, showrunner Alex Kurtzman had other plans in mind beyond Discovery – one that ensured that his career wouldn’t sink along with the NCC-1701 starship. Soon after, his plans concerning a sequel to Picard , namely Star Trek: Legacy came into work and Picard showrunner Terry Matalas quickly jumped on board to helm the project.
“I have a lot of pride around it”: Star Trek: Discovery Has Been Doing One Thing Right That Makes it Superior to George Lucas’ Star Wars
Sadly, the reality of Hollywood studio systems, contractual commitments of actors, directors, and producers, their behind-the-scenes politics, and the bureaucratic red tape that keeps it all in line said otherwise. The fate of Star Trek: Legacy is now as fickle as USS Discoveryʼs commitment to a single Captain per season.
Marvel Lays Waste to Alex Kurtzmanʼs Star Trek: Legacy
If anybody is familiar with the game of franchises, it is well known that Patrick Stewart ʼs introduction as Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The New Generation was bound to be followed up by a quaint new spin-off series titled Picard .
Launched in 2020, after three wonderful seasons of the critically acclaimed show, it was primed and ready to be succeeded by a new generation of stars in Star Trek: Legacy – one that would aptly honor the legacy of Jean-Luc Picard by exploring the adventures of his son, Jack Crusher.
But before Alex Kurtzman and Terry Matalas could put their plan in motion, Paramount+ withdrew their investment from the series. Despite the hype and the chatter of fans surrounding Star Trek: Legacy , Kurtzman revealed in an interview with Den of Geek that the show would not become a reality anytime soon:
If I had a magic button, a magic ‘greenlight button,’ for Star Trek: Legacy, and it was all on me, I’d push that button today. Right now, it’s beyond my paygrade.
The Star Trek: The Next Generation Episode That Was So Controversial the UK Banned it
With months toiling away into years, the interest around Legacy dwindled just as much as its chance of ever getting made for television. The franchise suffered another blow after Terry Matalas jumped ship to Marvel Studios for the opportunity to helm a new Disney+ project based on Vision.
With Marvel taking up years of contractually binding commitment, Matalas’ future looks set at the house of superheroes. As time passes, the potential of Star Trek: Legacy dwindles further down the list of potential projects that could be green-lit in the near future.

‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Producers Urge Fans To Be Patient Waiting For Season 2 On Netflix
| May 22, 2024 | By: TrekMovie.com Staff 24 comments so far
Last fall, when Netflix announced they were picking up the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy after it had been removed from Paramount+, fans were elated. They also celebrated the worldwide streaming re-release of the first season on Christmas Day. Netflix confirmed they would release the second season in 2024. As the wait continues, producers are urging fans to remain patient.
Season 2 is “worth the wait”
It has now been around five months since the Netflix re-release of the first season of Prodigy , which originally wrapped up on Paramount+ in December 2022. Work on the second season wrapped up at the beginning of 2024. Now fans are starting to wonder how much longer they have to wait. The frustration is understandable, especially after the unexpected early release of season 2 on French TV (dubbed in French) in March.
Executive producers and showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman took to Twitter/X this week to let fans know they understand. Responding to a fan asking about season 2, they said they were “holding tight like everyone else,” but also promised the second season is “worth the wait.”
we’re holding tight just like everyone else, but we know it’s worth the wait. :) — Dan & Kevin Hageman (@brothershageman) May 20, 2024
Last week, co-executive producer Aaron Waltke also expressed a similar sentiment, posting a clip from Star Trek: Picard quoting Krinn saying “Patience brings great rewards,” adding “Words to live by.”

Season 2 is not coming in June
Even though Netflix and Paramount+ are separate streaming services, there may be coordination to avoid any overlap with the release of Star Trek content, all of which is produced by CBS Studios. The fifth season of Discovery wraps up on Paramount+ next week, on May 30th. The fifth and final season of the animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks is expected later this year. Typically, new seasons of Lower Decks have arrived at the end of summer, but last year’s SAG strike delayed some of the voice acting and that might have had an impact on their release timing. Netflix just announced its lineup for June 2024 and Prodigy season 2 is not listed, so the wait will continue into the summer and possibly beyond.

Watching season 1 on Netflix helps
Hopefully, when the time comes, Netflix will make an effort to promote the second season of Prodigy with a publicity campaign. So far all we have is a clip released by CBS last summer (before the Netflix deal was announced). The producers have all made it clear that Netflix could commission a third season if the show performs well on its new streaming home.
One way fans can show support for the show is by watching the first season on Netflix. One of the fans behind last year’s #SaveStarTrekProdigy campaign is rallying fellow fans around celebrating the show by watching it on Netflix this Sunday, May 26th, in an effort to show the algorithm how much love there is for the series.
We’re making May 26th a big day of celebrating #StarTrekProdigy and everything we love about it. Get your stuff ready, and we’ll show our love and get Netflix’s attention at the same time. #StarTrek #Animation #Netflix — Captain Meg 🟡🟡🟡🟡 (@Commander_Meg) May 17, 2024

Robert Picardo Says The Doctor Isn’t Just Comic Relief In ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Season 2
Netflix just released its June line-up. No Prodigy.
I’m *hoping* that Netflix made some handshake deal with Paramount not to draw attention away from Disco S5, and that’s why we haven’t heard anything yet.
Can’t wait for this! Have enjoyed enjoy most of the modern shows with my fave being Lower Decks, but I think the writing on Prodigy has been the best.
I’m trying to maintain my patience, even though it’s gotten tougher since the French release. Even if we don’t get a June release, I did have the thought that we could at least hear something then, since that’s when they usually have their Tudum event which seems like the perfect place to show it off. Here’s hoping.
My hope is that Netflix are biding their time and working with Paramount to launch Prodigy effectively and properly, in a way it should have always been done; branded and marketed to a younger demographic and families around the world. Much in the same way the 2009 movie was launched with a barrage of campaigns and merchandising – Playmates Toys, where are you with the Prodigy toys… hopefully this break gives Netflix the chance to get Playmates Toys onboard, and actually make a go of this new series which will be the key to introducing Star Trek to kids. It has to succeed if Star Trek is to live in the minds of those who are going to shape the future. Prodigy needs to work for Star Trek to remain relevant
I hope you’re right. No one in my family are kids and we all love it, tho, so I hope EVERYONE watches it. Esp the second half of season one was excellent. I keep thinking the biggest mistake Paramount and the writers made was keeping real Janeway a surprise. I’m remember reading Kate would be back…but for a hologram with a bunch of kids and just being like, oh. Deflated. It’s not must-see for Voy fans. And then it WAS, and I enjoyed the twists and all and b/c I always give any new Trek a try I was literally there for it, but it felt like maybe people checked out before then, when not only Janeway appeared but the show got much more complex and Trek-y. I hope they can find the balance of getting the kids in there but also letting adults know this is vital, exciting Trek storytelling.
So what Happens, when a fan loses patience? Not watching it? I doubt that.
They rant on the internet
Literally two comments down someone saying they won’t watch it b/c it’s been so long. So, yes. Streamers and networks very much do lose viewers for having shows on long breaks. People forget what happened previously, people feel like the “buzz” is gone, they lose interest despite reporting having “loved” the previous season, etc.. I have actually seen multiple threads of people talking about wanting to go back to life with 22 episode per season shows on network simply b/c they want to watch the same show every week where the same thing happens every week and there are only a couple breaks in the year. Not breaks that TAKE years. I’m not talking Trek fans specifically here, but we need casuals to tune into things for them to survive. I think people are lazy, tasteless, and full of it wanting to go back to crap network tv, but it’s still a reality right now.
Kid watched season 1 and liked it. The wait between part 1-2 was too long for what they said was a kids show. Prolly why they cancelled it
I made my 4 nephews watch it. They found it boring and ‘tame’. So they all went back to playing their violent computer games.
They better still release season 2 on blu-ray as it will be the only way I can see it as I do not have netflix and never have had it and never will have it they are on my permanent boycot list for multiple reasons one for not canceling and removing all of the homophobic and transphobic stand up comedian’s crap from the service and for getting rid of password sharing and being far to expensive compared to other streaming services Plus Netflix has never had enough content I would want to watch that I don’t have on physical media or on other services
They’ve done releases of some of their shows, like Sandman (which is so good.) But not everything, ob. Fingers crossed they’ll feel like Trek has enough of a fanbase to justify producing some discs.
I have a feeling paramount home video will the ones to release it like they do with other releases and I know the dubbedPokémon anime seasons and movies that are on netflix first end up not being released by Netflix but the Pokémon company who owns and makes the show as Netflix is just the international distributor for it
Alright, I think this means I’m going to mordre la balle and watch this sucker in French.
Why? Because they politely asked you not to?
The show is zombie at this point. I doubt I’m going to even bother watching.
By all accounts, the second season is excellent and wraps up the story in a compelling way, with the possibility for more if it does well.
Did you say the same thing when TNG, DS9 or TOS were announced to be in their final seasons?
I can’t wait for S2. Prodigy and LDS are the only trek I watch now. I’m looking forward to it! Prodigy rocks!
Funny I asked about this the other day and a bit frustrating but not the end of the world. But this is the definitely the show I’m looking forward to and hopefully we will hear something soon.
And really do think it will be worth the wait! 😊
All I got from this is that “Rory The Nerd” needs to get outside and get some air. And perhaps a girlfriend?
It’s a TV show. It’ll come back. Just relax.
It’ll be canceled without passionate fans, so have a little respect.
I’m starting to feel a bit of despair, tbh. I love this show but it feels like Netflix doesn’t. When will they promote it? Give us some kind of REAL update? I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait and I’m glad they didn’t just drop it with no fanfare b/c of the French mistake…but still. I rewatched season one as soon as it came out on Netflix and it feels like forever ago.
Netflix rarely promotes their shows until the month it premieres, because they need to keep the hype going.
Season one came out on Netflix over Christmas, it hasn’t been that long.
I’d love to have the “patience” they’re asking us to have, but it’s almost 3 months since the release in France. Also I looked up the shows/movies Netflix has bothered to give us dates for, ang all the way through to the end of 2024, Prodigy is nowhere on said list. Instead it’s on a seperate list on the same web page that says shows with no date. All it says is 2024. Yeah well where halfway through 2024 and nothing. I also heard that someone said something about it being released in Spring 2024. Well…Spring is ending, and it’s not being released in June, so that was obviously either a guess, or Netflix actually said this somewhere and I haven’t been able to find it, which would mean they lied, but wouldn’t surprise me. Now, if Netflix would have at the very least shown us a 10 second clip with the logo of the show and the words “Coming Soon” like they do with pretty much most of their own productions, then i’d have been happy with that. But they didn’t, and instead have given us silence. So this “patience” they want us to have? Sorry but for me that “patience” left the building, went to Kennedy Space Center, blasted off on one of the SpaceX rockets, and then from there left for outer space (AKA it’s gone, obviously, but I figured the space reference was appropriate). Will I still watch it when it finally does drop? Yes. Will I hold my breath and still be patient? Definitely not. Instead I will be giving my attention to The Acolyte on Disney+ in June. I’d watch Prodigy Season 2 first, but of course they wont let us see it so, The Acolyte it is.
