Travis Scott Wasted No Time Putting His Mug Shot on a T-Shirt

After a night of partying in South Florida, the superstar rapper Travis Scott ended his Thursday with two more charges on his record and one more product on his website than he started with.

An established swag king who’s no stranger to brand deals , Mr. Scott, 33, turned a spotlight on what many would consider an embarrassing moment when he started selling T-shirts featuring his mug shot, just hours after his arrest in Miami Beach. The new merchandise reinforced the idea that for certain celebrities and politicians, brushes with the law can be easily recast as lucrative business opportunities.

The rapper made headlines after the police responded shortly before 2 a.m. on Thursday to reports of a fight aboard a yacht docked at a marina . Mr. Scott was charged with trespassing and disorderly intoxication and then released on bond after paying a total of $650 on both charges, according to local news outlets .

Mr. Scott, whose real name is Jacques Bermon Webster II, later admitted he had been drinking alcohol. “It’s Miami,” he was quoted as saying in the police report.

That same phrase, along with his mug shot — altered from the much more stoic original to include a broad, movie-star smile — had landed by day’s end on a dark T-shirt selling for $35 on his website .

The “Free the Rage Tee #2” will ship in one week, according to the website, and $5 from each sale will be donated to the Cactus Jack Foundation, Mr. Scott’s nonprofit organization. As of Friday afternoon, the T-shirt was no longer available for purchase on his website.

This wasn’t a first for Mr. Scott. He briefly sold a shirt featuring a mug shot from an earlier arrest, in 2017, when he was charged with inciting a riot at his concert. He later pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct. Rare, used versions of the tee are currently on resale for $175 at the online marketplace Grailed.

In 2021, at the Astroworld music festival in Houston, at least 10 people were killed and hundreds more were injured at Mr. Scott’s concert after the crowd began pushing toward the front of the stage. Mr. Scott, who founded the festival, did not face criminal charges for his role in the event.

A representative for Mr. Scott did not immediately respond to emailed questions on Friday. (In a previous statement , a lawyer for Mr. Scott made light of his client’s brief detention, saying it was “due to a misunderstanding.”)

There is a playbook for commodifying arrests and court appearances, one by which famous people, and on occasion their fans, turn potentially embarrassing evidence of run-ins with the law into products that can be worn, eaten off of or sipped out of.

Last year, after former President Donald J. Trump’s fourth indictment, the release of his mug shot — the first for an American president — presented a marketing opportunity. The Trump campaign and its supporters wasted no time plastering the picture on a variety of merchandise , including shirts, pins, mugs and shot glasses.

Then there’s trial merch . In the court case over Britney Spears’s conservatorship, the hashtag #FreeBritney popped up on coffee mugs and shirts. Gwyneth Paltrow’s ski crash trial in Park City, Utah, last year, in which she was found not at fault, inspired clothing that featured the word “Gwynnocent” or the actress’s most indelible quote from the trial, referring to her own hardships: “Well, I lost half a day of skiing.”

Anna Sorokin, the fake heiress known as Anna Delvey, appeared on personalized products at the height of her fame. And Jen Shah, the star of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” who went to prison after pleading guilty to participating in a fraudulent telemarketing scheme, sold T-shirts inspired by her case.

Mug shots and court photos become lasting icons of shame and embarrassment or defiant pride for some celebrities: Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Frank Sinatra. And they embody a cool factor that can even win praise from fans. Mr. Scott — who is also an ex-boyfriend of the reality TV star and cosmetics mogul Kylie Jenner, with whom he shares two children — seems to know this well.

But his wasn’t the only high-profile mug shot this week: Shortly after Justin Timberlake was arrested early Tuesday morning in Sag Harbor, N.Y., on suspicion of driving while intoxicated , a scruffy booking photo of the pop star began to circulate online. It remains to be seen what the world — and the star himself — will make of it.

580,000 glass coffee mugs recalled because they can break when filled with hot liquid

NEW YORK — Some 580,000 glass coffee mugs are being recalled across the U.S. after dozens of burn and laceration injuries were reported by consumers.

According to a Thursday notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the now-recalled JoyJolt-branded “Declan Single Wall Glass Coffee Mugs” can crack or break when filled with hot liquids.

To date, the CPSC added, there have been 103 incidents of these glasses breaking at the base — resulting in 56 injuries. That includes 35 reports of burns across the body from spilled hot liquids and 21 cuts, with seven requiring medical attention like surgery and stitches.

The 16-ounce coffee mugs, distributed by New York-based MM Products Inc., were sold online at the company’s JoyJolt website as well as Amazon.com from September 2019 through May 2022 in sets of six for between $20 and $25. The recalled glasses have model number JG10242 — which can be found on the side of the products’ packaging and order confirmation.

Consumers in possession of these recalled mugs are urged to immediately stop using them, and contact MM Products for a full refund. Registration is also available online at JoyJolt’s recall page.

On this page, the company notes that it issued the voluntary recall because “your safety is our top priority” — later adding that it appreciates impacted customers’ understanding and cooperation.

Justin Timberlake ’s mug shot has been released by the Sag Harbor Police Department following the singer’s arrest in Long Island , New York.

On Tuesday, June 18, around 12:37 a.m., the Everything I Thought It Was artist, 43, was placed under arrest after police determined he was “operating his vehicle in an intoxicated condition,” the Sag Harbor Police said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

The statement added that Timberlake was “observed operating a 2025 BMW southbound on Madison Street, failing to stop at a duly posted stop sign and failing to maintain his lane of travel.”

After observing the hitmaker's alleged intoxicated condition, police arrested, processed and held him overnight for an arraignment at the Sag Harbor Village Justice Court. He was arraigned on Tuesday, June 18 at 9:30 a.m. and he was released on his own recognizance, the statement confirmed.

PEOPLE confirmed Timberlake will be charged with one count of DWI and two citations — one for running a stop sign and one for failure to keep in lane. He’s due back in court on July 26.

Sag Harbor Police Department

Following his arrest, a source told PEOPLE that Timberlake was arrested on DWI charges after spending time at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor. He was pulled over after leaving the establishment to drive to his friend's house.

"Nobody was hurt," the source said.

An an insider told PEOPLE that during his courthouse appearance the “Selfish” singer, accompanied by attorney Ed Burke Jr. and two other individuals, was handcuffed "with his hands in front of him" and wore "a black bowling shirt, light jeans and white and baby blue Air Force 1s.” His cuffs were removed following the arraignment.

"He did seem a bit upset," said the source. "Jessica [Biel, his wife] was not with him."

PEOPLE reached out to a representative for Timberlake for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

News of Timberlake’s arrest comes amid his Forget Tomorrow World Tour , which is set to resume on June 21 and June 22 at Chicago's United Center before circling back to N.Y.C. for June 25 and June 26 shows at Madison Square Garden. The Grammy winner last performed at Miami’s Kaseya Center on Saturday, June 15, before heading to New York.

He’ll then take his tour overseas in late July, stopping in Poland and Germany, followed by a U.K. stretch in early August.

The "Drown" performer recently celebrated Father’s Day on Sunday, June 16, writing a touching Instagram tribute to his sons Silas, 9, and Phineas, 3½ — whom he shares with wife Jessica Biel . “My 2 greatest gifts. I learn more about myself everyday just because you both chose me to be your Daddy,” he began in a caption .

Jamie McCarthy/FilmMagic

“I will always be there for you through your peaks and valleys… to lift you up and show you how high you can take this life and to pick you up when you fall,” Timberlake continued. “And, of course, to flood you with insufferable Dad-jokes all along the way. I love you both so much. Thank you for giving me my biggest purpose.”

Biel, 42 — who’s been apart from Timberlake amid his tour and while she films her new Prime Video series, The Better Sister — also penned a sweet Father’s Day message to her husband on Instagram , stating, “You’re so many things to so many people. But to us you are THE ROCK.”

She added, “The rock we climb on, we lean against. The rock that shades us from the sun. And when we recline on you, as we always do, hopefully our butts will keep you eternally grounded and warm. We LOVE YOU 🪨❤️.”

Unruly Passenger Who Was Restrained With Duct Tape Faces Record Fine

Federal regulators are seeking $81,950 from a Texas woman who acted erratically and was violent toward crew members during an American Airlines flight in 2021.

Two American Airlines jets on a tarmac, as seen through a window with slight reflections.

By Remy Tumin

An American Airlines passenger who kicked and spat at flight attendants and passengers and attempted to open the cabin door before she was secured to a seat with duct tape has been sued by the Federal Aviation Administration for $81,950, the largest-ever fine assessed by the agency for unruly behavior .

The passenger, Heather Wells, 34, of San Antonio, was traveling first class from the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in Texas to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, N.C., on July 7, 2021. About an hour into the flight she ordered a whiskey and became agitated and said she “wanted out” of the plane, according to a lawsuit filed on June 3 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas.

Ms. Wells began running toward the back of the plane, where she dropped to her knees in the aisle and began “talking incoherently to passengers, before crawling back toward the main cabin,” the lawsuit said.

When a flight attendant responded, Ms. Wells “became verbally aggressive and told the flight attendant that she would ‘hurt him’ if he didn’t get out of her way,” according to the court document.

She then pushed him and moved to the front of the plane where she “lunged toward and attempted to grab” the cabin door, “all the while screaming and yelling profanities.”

That was when two flight attendants and a passenger tried to physically restrain Ms. Wells, who struck one of the flight attendants in the head multiple times, the lawsuit said.

They were able to restrain her with duct tape and flex cuffs and place her on a seat. But she continued to “kick and spit and attempted to bite and head butt,” which “necessitated” Ms. Wells to be further restrained with tape, including on her mouth, according to the suit.

The captain determined that landing in Charlotte would be the quickest resolution, and law enforcement officers were waiting for the plane’s arrival, according to the lawsuit.

Ms. Wells continued to act violently once officers boarded, breaking the seat in front of her, before she was sedated and removed from the plane.

Ms. Wells told KENS 5 in San Antonio that she was having mental health issues and apologized in a statement.

“I know that it was not rational and I was not actually in any external dangers but at the time I was genuinely afraid for my life,” the statement read. “Words can’t express how sorry I am for the fear I caused and the people I hurt.”

Ms. Wells, who could not be reached for comment, told the news station that after she was taken off the plane she was kept in a hospital for observation and that she does not have a lawyer.

No lawyer was listed on the court documents and American Airlines did not return a request for comment on Saturday. It was unclear if Ms. Wells was ever formally charged.

According to the lawsuit, Ms. Wells is liable for a civil penalty of $45,000 for her violent behavior toward the crew and passengers; $27,950 for attempting to open the cabin door; and $9,000 for interfering with the performance of crew members’ duties, totaling $81,950.

The fines were proposed by the F.A.A. in 2022 , at which point Ms. Wells had 30 days to respond.

They came on the heels of a sweeping zero-tolerance policy meant to target soaring reports of aggressive behavior by passengers.

According to F.A.A. data , those incidents have dropped substantially: In 2021, there were nearly 6,000 reports of unruly passengers, dropping to 2,455 in 2022, and 2,075 in 2023. So far this year, 915 cases have been reported .

But in a statement this week, the agency warned against bad behavior as summer travel begins.

Pnw’s juneteenth celebration comes alive with food, music and a few haircuts.

There’s nothing better than seeing a historical event celebration capture the spirit in which it’s supposed to be meant, if you ask Tina Davis-Powell.

Davis-Powell has DJ’ed several Juneteenth events this month, with Wednesday’s at Purdue Northwest as her last stop. Each event she was at was better than the last, she said, and light years ahead of where events were even last year.

Rather than being all educational or all vendors, this year’s celebrations — and PNW’s in particular — have finally figured out how to memorialize the event commemorating June 19th, 1865, the day when 2,000 Union troops finally made it to Galveston Bay, Texas, to let enslaved people know they’d been freed by executive decree two years and five months after the Emancipation Proclamation. Even the heat didn’t keep anyone away from the party, said Sal Cordova, PNW’s assistant director of Student Life.

For its part, Student Life passed out free ice packs for relief, he said.

“The Cultural Heritage Committee really put a lot of thought into making this event better. When they say, ‘It takes a village,’ that’s exactly what happened,” Cordova said. “We always want our students to reach competency while reaching out to the community, and this event does it in a great way.”

Jamia Billups, an alum from East Chicago who studied Human Resources, brought her sister and brother, Taylor and Zion Billups, and her friend, Jalia Pitchford, out to campus for the festivities. The new feel did not go unnoticed.

“I’m tickled that they keep making it bigger and better each year,” Jamia Billups said after she and her siblings mugged in the photo booth. “This is important.”

The key to a good fest, and particularly this one, which has such meaning to the Black community, Davis-Powell said, is inviting everyone in to come and share.

“PNW had a college tour where kids could learn about Juneteenth, but then you have us here with music and a photo booth, and you’ve got free haircuts and phenomenal food,” said Davis-Powell, who’s also a spokeswoman for Merrillville Community Schools. “This is what it would look like at my house: fellowship with music and free food. Where do they do that at?”

Our Chicago: Celebrating Juneteenth across the city

WLS logo

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Wednesday is Juneteenth.

It marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people of African descent in Galveston, Texas learned that they were free. That was more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Perri Irmer is the president and CEO of the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center. She says for many years, Juneteenth was not celebrated in more northern states.

"This is, I think, also an example of pieces of history that are kept hidden, that aren't widely known. And why it's so important for institutions like Black museums and history curriculum across the board to really recognize these important dates and these important facts in American history. And let's not forget that African-American history is American history," Irmer said.

In June 2021, Juneteenth became a national holiday. This year, the DuSable Black History Museum has a day of events planned to celebrate. Irmer is hoping "everyone" attends.

"We are the nation's oldest, independent Black history museum," Irmer said.

The DuSable was founded in 1961.

"We are really kind of the centerpiece of Chicago's Juneteenth celebration. This year, we expect probably upwards of 6,000 people during the day, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. We're offering entertainment, we're offering music and dance. And we have so many activations and a vendor marketplace that mimics an African marketplace," Irmer said.

Our Chicago: Part 2

At Chicago's Music Box Theater, "Life Within The Lens: Juneteenth Edition" will feature five short films. All of them, the works of Black filmmakers here in Chicago.

Among them is Marquis Simmons. His film is called "Broke Down Drone."

"It's about two cousins who are just going through the everyday struggle trying to make their dreams happen," Simmons said.

He says it takes you on a journey through Chicago.

"This film was a love letter to North Lawndale and pretty much, predominately, the West Side of Chicago. So I want people walking away feeling uplifted and just feeling hopeful. No matter how hard your circumstances are that the dream is still very possible," Simmons said.

Tyler Michael Balentine is the programmer at the Music Box Theatre.

"Film is perspective. And when you get a perspective into all of our stories and how nuanced they are, from sadness to joy. Subjects of life and death, faith, community, liberation, especially with it being Juneteenth, you definitely get to have more insight and you just have more of a view of what it means to be Black in America," Balentine said.
