Michael Buble

Michael Bublé  engaged in a little market research on Friday (Sept. 23) as he brought his “Higher” tour to Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. He asked how many people were seeing him in concert for the first time.

Michael Buble & Luisana Lopilato Welcome Baby No. 4: ‘Thank God for This Infinite Blessing’

Trending on billboard.

On the “Higher” tour — named after his ninth Reprise studio album, which was released six months ago — Bublé seemed to enjoy his role of introducing his audience to genres they may not have known before. “Enjoy your first big-band song,” he said by way of introducing “When You’re Smiling.”

Bublé is in some ways this generation’s Barry Manilow . Both performers are personable and hammy, and make effective use of self-deprecating humor. (Bublé, catching a glimpse of himself on the video screens, blurted out, “I look like Kermit the Frog.”) Both gained a reputation for showmanship that has allowed them to headline major venues whether they had a current hit record or not.

Here are five times Bublé reached “higher” on his L.A. tour stop:

Beefing up “Haven’t Met You Yet”

Bublé’s “Haven’t Met You Yet” remains his biggest Billboard Hot 100 hit. The 2009 single, which he co-wrote with frequent collaborators Alan Chang and Amy Foster, has the jaunty quality of Manilow’s sing-along 1977 hit “Daybreak.” But Bublé has beefed the song’s arrangement to something closer to Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” (which was among the songs piped into the arena as people were taking their seats). There were welcome Beatlesque touches on the song — a horn solo and the “love, love, love” chorus.

Silencing the chatters

While Bublé was singing “Smile,” the lovely ballad written by Charlie Chaplin and popularized by Nat “King” Cole, there was a steady murmur of chatter coming from the audience. Bublé stopped his performance and said, good-naturedly but with an edge, “I hear people talking. I feel I’m getting in the way of the good time they’re having. I’m going to sing this s— even slower if you don’t shut up.” This is almost certainly a recurring bit in his show. Bublé had introduced the song by asking the audience to give the song the respect and reverence it deserves, which set up this pay-off. And sad to say, audiences nowadays often act like they’re watching TV in their living rooms, so Bublé can usually count on hearing audience chatter. But hopefully he got his point across to at least a few audience members that there’s a time and place for chatting and a time for showing a little respect.

Taking it way down

A tribute to the King

Bublé performed most of his set on the main stage, backed by a large band, but one of the most effective segments in the show was on a secondary stage in the middle of the house. He was backed by a five-piece band on a three-song tribute to Elvis. At another point in the show, he name-checked the King as one of the performers from whom he had borrowed. He also cited Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and The Mills Brothers. And he quoted Bennett, who purportedly told him, “If you steal from one person, you’re a thief. If you steal from enough people, you can call it research.”

Giving his band and back-up singers their props

Bublé had a smart way of sharing the spotlight with his band and backup singers. Their faces were shown, one by one, on the video screens, with their names shown as chyrons. It was a generous way of giving these pros the props they deserve.

Here’s the setlist for Bublé’s Sept. 23 show.

Michael Bublé at Resorts World Arena Birmingham - tickets, set list, timings, bags policy and more

Canadian singer Michael Bublé is bringing his Higher tour to Birmingham this week - here's everything you should know

  • 05:30, 8 MAY 2023

Michael Bublé performing at Manchester earlier in the Higher tour

Michael Bublé has embarked on his first nationwide tour in four years - and he's in Birmingham this week! The Canadian singer will perform at Resorts World Arena as part of his Higher tour on Wednesday, May 10, and Thursday, May 11.

The I Just Haven't Met You Yet hitmaker is celebrating 20 years since the release of his self-titled debut album with UK show dates, the last of which will be in Brum. The tour kicked off in London in March.

The multi-Grammy Award-winning performer is set to perform the 'greatest tracks' from the last two decades as well as songs from Higher, the album that shot to number one when it was released in 2022.

On the announcement of his tour, Michael said: "I can’t wait to be back in arenas across the UK - it's going to be true arena spectacle! I'm so excited for people to experience it.

"A lot of my fans have been part of my journey for the past 20 years, so to celebrate this milestone with everyone together is going to be extra special. I just want to connect to them, take them away, spread some goodness. That's it!"

There are still a few tickets left for both Birmingham shows, so if you're looking to pick up some last minute now is your chance! Or if you've already had yours for months in anticipation, here's everything you need to know about the two shows at Resorts World Arena.

When is Michael Bublé performing?

Michael Bublé will perform at Resorts World Arena, just outside of Birmingham, on Wednesday, May 10, and Thursday, May 11. His Birmingham shows will be the last on his Higher Tour.

He's previously performed in London, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Newcastle, Cardiff and Nottingham. In June he will head to Australia and New Zealand, before going to Mexico in October.

How to get tickets?

You might be in luck! As there's still some tickets left for both shows at Resorts World Arena on The Ticket Factory . The cheapest tickets are available for the second night at £64.70 plus booking fees.

For May 10, tickets are still available for price bands A £104.20 and B £87.30. All three price bands are still available for May 11, priced at £104.20 for A, £87.30 for B and £64.70 for C.

All tickets will be subject to be a booking fee and prices were correct at the time of writing. There are still limited tickets available through Ticketmaster .

Who is supporting?

Michael Bublé actually has no support act for his Birmingham shows, which generally means an earlier start for the main act.

Resorts World Arena said: "There will be no support on this show, please arrive early to allow for security, bag and tickets checks and be seated ready for the show start time."

Travelling to Resorts World Arena is also pretty easy via the train, as Birmingham International Train Station is less than a 10 minute walk away. It is served by national and local services with Virgin Trains as the main operator plus Cross Country, London Midland and Arriva Trains Wales.

Parking at Resorts World Arena

As you arrive, there will be plenty of electronic signage pointing you in the direction of where you need to park for the Michael Bublé concerts.

Make sure you don't park in the Resorts World Birmingham car park as this is just for shoppers and diners to use. The car park for Resorts World Arena is on the NEC site. Parking costs £13 on the day or £12 if you pre-pay in advance. You can also choose the NEC Express option which costs £21.50.

Be sure to take a credit card or phone as the venue is cashless so all parking payments must be made via credit/debit card or via your smartphone. There are Blue Badge parking areas for visitors with disabilities. Find out more on the Resorts World Arena Accessibility page.
