Mexico Tours & Trips

Travellers laughing and smiling leaning on a yellow wall in the the yellow city in Izamal, Mexico

Peel back the lucha libre mask and you’ll find a patchwork of cultures and customs mixed into one flavor-filled country.

The gregarious locals are just as likely to pull you up for a dance at one of Mexico City ’s hip-shaking salsa clubs as they are to show you the way to one of the country’s many ancient ruins , all with a casual ‘hola’ and an inviting smile. While our tours get you up close with locals, they also show you the best sights from on and off the gringo trail. You can party until dawn in Playa del Carmen , eat your way into a food coma in colorful Oaxaca , or, best of all, kick back with a horchata in the lazy seaside port of Merida .

Best time to visit mexico.

Mexico is generally most pleasant between September and June in the cool, dry season. July and August can be very hot and humid, but perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and lazing on the beach. These are, however, the busiest months for travel as this is the time of the North American school holidays. Highland areas such as Chiapas and Oaxaca tend to be cooler year-round, with cold nights.

Culture and customs

Mexico lays claim to one of the richest and most historic cultures in the world. Characterized by strong regional identity, locals are affiliated directly to the region they hail from with each region having its own unique customs, cuisine and even language dialect. Despite this, national identity is still strong with all Mexicans sharing common bonds over their love of sport, dance, food and religion. With most of the country belonging to the Roman Catholic religion, religious festivals and celebrations are plentiful in Mexico. Parades, street fairs and parties held in honor of local saints are commonplace, and offer travelers the chance to witness the customs and rituals of this vibrant culture.

Eating and drinking

One of Mexico's biggest draws is its food and drink. From Oaxaca's indigenous staples to the sizzling street food of Mexico City, there's almost too much choice for the hungry traveler. By the end of your Mexico tour, you'll know your tacos from your tamales, your enchiladas from your elote and your tequila from your mezcal.

Eat your way through this vibrant country on our  9 day Mexico Real Food Adventure.

Geography and environment

Mexico shares land borders with the  United States ,  Belize  and  Guatemala , and has an extensive coastline that runs along the Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

Featuring a wide variety of natural environments, Mexico is home to tracts of tropical rainforests, vast areas of low-lying plains and deserts, volcanic mountains and temperate beaches and lagoons.

Mexico's capital and major cities are typically built up, busy and lively – with a vast network of public transport, highways and roads. Rural areas, on the other hand, are distinctly less developed, with small-scale housing, unsealed roads and rustic farms.

History and government

Early history.

People have been living in Mexico for more than 13,000 years. Mesoamericans occupied the area early on, with archaeological evidence pointing towards Mesoamericans leading a hunter-gatherer existence. Maize farming is thought to have become commonplace by 1500 BC, which led to the farming of other commodities as well. A variety of cultures contributed to the early history of Mexico, with the Olmec, Toltec, Maya, Teotihuacan and Aztecs all bringing unique cultural, religious and artistic styles to the region, with the Mayan and Aztec Empires having the greatest (and most enduring) impact on the region.

Mayan society can be traced back to 300 BC, while the Aztecs enjoyed prosperity from 1325 to around 1521 AD. Many ancient ruins and constructions from these periods are still standing all throughout Mexico and can be visited and viewed today. By the 16th century, the Spanish had arrived in Mexico and what followed was a period of colonialism that lasted nearly 300 years.

During this time, Mexico was seen as a part of ‘New Spain’ along with Cuba and Puerto Rico. This was not a particularly good time for Mexicans who (under colonial law) were generally not allowed to travel outside of Mexico and were denied access to education. Mexico achieved independence from the Spaniards after the War of Independence (1810-1821) but peace was short-lived as two decades later the Mexican-American War brought more confrontation and armed conflict to parts of Mexico.

Recent history

Mexico’s Revolution of 1910 - 1921 was a period of instability, marked by political turmoil and bloodshed. More recently, Mexico has enjoyed an economic resurgence after decades of economic hardship, which lasted from the 1970s to the mid-1990s. The earthquake of 1985 didn’t help matters, with wide-scale damage and loss of life compounding the economic problems and political uncertainty of Mexico. Currently, Mexico is benefiting from a period of improved economic conditions, although the gap between the wages earned by Mexicans and their northern neighbors continues to widen. Mexico is now operating in a free market economy and the growth of tourism, agriculture and industry has ensured an improved economy for the country, although financial inequality still exists within.

Memorable moments of Mexico

1. ramble among the ruins.

A visit to the famed ruins of Chichen Itza reveals history, ancient architecture, and wildlife in equal measure. Walk through the complex and hear jungle animal calls as colorful birds fly among the canopy. This is a stirring experience to treasure.

2. Bittersweet bites

The cult of chocolate is well and truly alive in Oaxaca! The flavors here are simply phenomenal and unlike mass-produced chocolate in the Western world. Spiced with chili, cinnamon and cloves, you won’t soon forget the taste of Oaxacan chocolate.

3. Sunshine and snorkeling

Mexico’s Caribbean coastline showcases expanses of clear blue water, white sand beaches, vibrant reefs and plenty of sunshine. Snorkeling over colorful fish and sun-lit coral is simply unforgettable.

4. Mountain majesty

The cooler climate and fresh mountain air of San Cristobal de las Casas provides some respite from the city heat. Chilling out in this relaxed and visually stunning area is a magical Mexican moment.

5. Bus buddies

Catching a local bus in Mexico is a never-ending source of amusement. Overcome the language barrier and make friends with local commuters to pass the time.

6. Tequila!

No visit to Mexico is complete without downing a little bit of the national drink. While you may not remember every detail the morning after, good times and memorable holiday snapshots are guaranteed when tequila is involved.

7. Volcanic splendor

Mexico’s volcanic landscapes are photo-worthy and awe-inspiring. Hiking past rocky escarpments and surreal scenery is a rewarding travel experience to remember.

8. Village people

Sharing smiles and laughs with locals while strolling through the rural villages of Mexico is a simple, yet memorable way to see the real heart of Mexico - its people.

9. Mariachi melodies

Sway to the unique sounds of Mexico’s mariachi music in the streets and cafes of Mexico. The rhythms and beats will live in your heart for years to come.

10. To market, to market

Witness Latin America’s time-honored commercial traditions unfold in Mexico’s well-patronized markets. Hear the banter of stallholders, smell the fragrant scent of sizzling meat and admire the colorful array of wares on offer.

Top places to visit in Mexico

This coastal town is well-known for its incredible cliff-top Mayan temple ruins with expansive ocean views. But outside of architectural wonders, Tulum also has quite a few natural wonders. Spend some time exploring Tulum's numerous cenotes and caves for unforgettable snorkeling and diving.

Explore Tulum on our 8 day Yucatan Peninsula Adventure or on our 8 day Premium Mexico Yucatan Highlights tour.

Numerous significant architectural sites, baroque churches and impressive cultural displays may have landed Oaxaca the badge of Unesco World Heritage Site, but in recent years, the city has gained notoriety as a culinary destination. Make sure to try regional specialties like tlayudas, mole and mezcal.

Get a taste of Oaxaca on our 9 day Mexico Real Food Adventure.

3. San Cristobal

Set in a valley surrounded by pine forests, San Cristóbal de las Casas has a bright yellow cathedral, pastel houses and buildings draped in deep pink bougainvillea, making it one of Mexico's most colorful cities. Stop by the local markets to browse locally-made handicrafts with colors that rival those of the city itself.

Explore this colorful city on our 15 day Best of Mexico tour.

Travelers will be delighted with the range of good quality shopping available in Mexico. As usual, the markets offer some of the most cost-effective and fun ways to shop, although Mexico’s cities also showcase some excellent boutiques and galleries for more costly purchases.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. The United States and Canada generally have strict customs laws.

Things to buy in Mexico

1. Tiles, ceramics and earthenware

Mexico has a longstanding tradition of creating good-quality pottery. Hit the artisan markets for colorful pots, vases and jugs. Don’t forget to pack carefully.

2. Bright textiles

Woven textiles can be found almost everywhere in Mexico. Hand-woven rugs, blankets, scarves, and ponchos are great reminders of your time in Mexico.

The silver in Mexico is among the world's best. Rings, necklaces and bracelets featuring bold Aztec designs are popular choices.

4. Lucha Libre masks

This Mexican wrestling phenomenon is growing in popularity worldwide, so grab a colorful wrestling mask - it’s a great souvenir for kids (and big kids) at home.

Festivals and events in Mexico

Mexico is the land of the fiesta and the locals will find any reason to party. Whether they're celebrating independence, the saints or the dead, you can expect vibrant colors, lively music and a whole lot of dancing. One to keep an eye out for is the Autumn Equinox, when crowds gather at Chichen Itza to witness the sunlight and shadows play tricks on this ancient relic. During the autumn (and spring) equinox, the sun moves across Chichen Itza, illuminating parts of the temple to reveal the moving body of a snake. Not seen on any other days, this natural spectacle draws thousands of pilgrims.

Mexico travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Mexico?

Mexico is a country of varied landscapes and altitudes and the best time to visit depends on a variety of factors, the first of which is where you actually want to go.

Is it safe to visit Mexico?

Mexico has long been a popular tourist destination and most travelers do not run into any trouble. There are, however, areas that experience high levels of violent crime as a result of lawlessness and drug trafficking. That said, you can rest assured that Intrepid would not take you anywhere unless we were convinced it was safe.

Do I need a visa to travel to Mexico?

All tourists traveling to Mexico need a tourist permit, but not all need a visa. Citizens of the US, EU, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand are among those who do not need a visa and can obtain a tourist permit on arrival.

Is tipping customary in Mexico?

Tipping is expected in most parts of Mexico. The service workers typically earn a low wage and rely on tips to earn a decent living. We recommend leaving 10–15 percent at restaurants (if the service charge is not already included), 5–10 percent of your room cost for housekeepers, and a few dollars for porters, bartenders and guides.

What is the internet access like in Mexico?

Internet access is good in Mexico with wi-fi available in most accommodations, bigger restaurants, airports and in some public spaces. It’s also easy and affordable to buy a local SIM card for the duration of your Mexico tour.

Can I use my cell phone in Mexico?

If you wish to use your cell phone while in Mexico be sure to activate global roaming before leaving your home country. You should also check with your provider regarding any charges you may incur when overseas.

If you wish to purchase a local SIM card in Mexico, your phone must first be unlocked. For more information on local SIM cards, please read about   internet access in Mexico .

What are the toilets like in Mexico?

It's likely that you will encounter different types of toilets while traveling in Mexico. Western-style flushable toilets are commonly found in high-end resorts, hotels and restaurants, while squat toilets are common in rural areas and homes. Be prepared by carrying your own supply of toilet paper and soap, as these aren't always provided.

Can I drink the water in Mexico?

We do not recommend drinking the water in Mexico.

For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water and fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found; some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available, often boiled to use for tea or coffee.

It’s also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Mexico?

Credit cards are generally accepted in Mexico at large stores and most mid- high-range hotels. Some cafes, bars and restaurants may accept card too, but the places with real character – and the best local food – tend to be cash only.

What is ATM access like in Mexico?

ATMs are available across towns and cities in Mexico. Travelers should not encounter trouble finding an ATM but be wary of international transaction fees. For your own safety, try to use ATMs in daylight hours.

What is the weather like in Mexico?

Mexico is renowned for its sunshine and sandy beaches, but the weather can vary depending on the region you’re traveling to and the time of year.

Is Mexico safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Mexico is becoming increasingly more accepting of same-sex relationships and has laws in place to protect those that identify differently, but it remains a country of strong Catholicism that has historically been hostile towards the local LGBTQIA+ community.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Mexico accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Tourist destinations in Mexico including Mexico City and the resort areas on the Yucatan Peninsula are seeing an increasing number of hotels, restaurants and tourist sights fitted out to accommodate travelers with limitations. That said, it can still be difficult for those with mobility issues and visual and hearing issues, particularly on public transport. We recommend using taxis to move around locally and flying between cities if possible unless, of course, you are on an Intrepid Mexico tour.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Mexico?

What you pack for your Mexico tour will depend on where you are traveling to. Mexico City, for example, will be much cooler than the coastal areas of Playa del Carmen or Tulum, thanks to its high altitude. In the winter, it can drop down towards freezing at night while reaching 73°F during the day, so it’s important to be prepared for both ends of the spectrum.

What's the accommodation like in Mexico?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Mexico you may find yourself staying in a basic hotel.

Intrepid prefers smaller character-filled hotels and guesthouses than hotel chains. When on vacation in Mexico, enjoy staying in small hotels owned and run by friendly locals.

Does my trip to Mexico support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Mexico directly support our foundation partner, Gastromotiva Mexico.

Gastromotiva Mexico

Gastromotiva Mexico is tackling food scarcity and homelessness while promoting a sustainable food movement. Donations help them provide nutritious, balanced meals to community shelters for vulnerable people such as women affected by domestic violence and refugees.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

What is it like traveling on a small group tour?

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or you’re about to embark on your first trip, traveling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organizing amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), traveling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

What people love about Mexico Tours

Great experience! A lot of cool activities and it is so great to not need to plan anything and stay with great people all the time.
This tour was AMAZING. Daniel, our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about all the Mayan sites we visited. He also did ALL THE WORK of securing admission tickets so that we did not have to wait in any long lines. Along the way, he took us to some wonderful & always delicious restaurants for lunch. He also advised us on good places to eat dinner in each of our hotel stays. What's more, he advised in several places to eat at the hotel since walking into the urban areas
This was one of the best holidays I have been on. Mexico was amazing, Tour Radar was very easy to deal with especially due to the fact that the original holiday was booked during Covid so it was postponed. The tour guides on each tour were amazing and the communication was very easy. Would totally use Tour Radar again for booking holidays

"Great tour and knowledgeable guides, we really enjoyed our trip! The itinerary was moved around a bit without us knowing ahead of time, so I ended up wearing jeans while we walked around at the temples in the midday heat (thought it was museum day, per the written itinerary). but otherwise,

EUROLATINO Tour Operators

"We had a fantastic México Colonial Cities tour! We saw beautiful cities and learned so much about Mexico. Javier was our online tour operator/guide. He was always friendly and professional, and would text us our itinerary for the next day including our tour info, hotel, and our driver’s info. The hotels and tours were just what we would have chosen for ourselves. However, if you want a tour guide with you and you want to travel with a group of people throughout the tour, then this isn’t the tour for you. For my husband and I, it was perfect. Everything was arranged for us, yet it was just the two of us, and we had the flexibility to explore on our own restaurants and the cities during our free time. Javier was always available online if we had questions. For 4 of our walking tours, it was just the 2 of us and our guides - all the guides were great! We highly recommend this tour and will be traveling with Tour Radar again.

Mexico Tours

The essence of mexico.

With ancient Mayan relics, conquistador towns, and high-rise, up-beat cities, Mexico is colonial, charismatic, and cosmopolitan, in its art, museums, and mariachi music; colour, culture, and fiestas; chic eateries and seafood on the sands.

Why choose a tour in Mexico?

There is more than a touch of myth and mystery to a tour of Mexico , where ancient temples and pyramids are hidden in jungle greenery, Mayan and Zapotec cultures are maintained in traditional enclaves, and Spanish conquistador towns are sprinkled across the landscape.

In the capital, Mexico City, eras intertwine from its historic heart and Baroque Metropolitan Cathedral to an Aztec temple, floating gardens, a cornucopia of galleries, music, and museums, and a thoroughly modern, gregarious character.

Set against a backdrop of volcanic peaks, Puebla is a big city with a beautiful colonial core, where a flourishing art scene complements dozens of churches, and azulejo tiles adorn 17 th -century façades.

With pre-Columbian ruins and a penchant for fiestas, Oaxaca is a bewitching mix of old-world streets and Indian Markets, famed for its hand-woven textiles, and exuding an authentic Mexican air.

On its Pacific Ocean isthmus, Tehuantepec is the hub of Zapotec culture, where women still wear traditional dress, and nearby Mitla’s archaeological site is home to ornately mosaiced Zapotec tombs.

Filling a Central Highlands valley with red-roofed houses and wrought iron balconies, San Cristóbal de las Casas is dubbed ‘the most magical of the Pueblos Mágicos’, with Maya communities in the locale.

Palenque earned its UNESCO listing as “an incomparable achievement of Mayan art”, its tombs, temples and towered palace hidden for a thousand years in forests of mahogany and cedar.

The port city of Campeche holds a picture-perfect Spanish-colonial quarter, complete with cobbled streets, pastel-painted mansions, and 16 th -century rampart walls around its atmospheric old town.

On the Yucatán peninsula , Cancún is ‘the glistening city’, its sparkling sands hemming the Caribbean coral reef; Mérida is known as ‘the white city’ for its limestone churches; and Izamal is the ‘golden city’, with an iconic monastery. The Maya site of Chichén Itzá is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, its sculptures and Kukulkan pyramid set above a subterranean river; Ek Balam and Edzná are archaeological treasure troves of well-preserved monuments; and Celestún’s Biosphere Reserve is a pocket of peace, where the river meets the sea.

On tours of this mesmerising part of the world, we also cross the border into Guatemala , where Panajachel is living Mayan culture; Antigua has mostly restored what Nature destroyed, and even the parts preserved as ruins are beautiful ruins; and Lake Petén Itza is the gateway to Tikal’s rainforest relics; and we dip into Honduras , to visit to the pyramids and plazas in UNESCO listed Copán.

When to go on Mexico holidays

With the Tropic of Cancer crossing the centre of this vast country, and a huge diversity of terrains above and below it, Mexico has not one climate, but several; varying from the arid west coast to cooler high-altitude cities, with moderate rain in the mountain ranges, and tropical downpours in some southern regions. As a general, nationwide overview, it is mainly wet and hot from May to October; mainly dry and cooler, averaging 28°C, from November to April.

Jules Verne’s journeys are in the most comfortable months of January, February and November.

Who are Mexico tours suited to?

Choose your favourites from Mexico’s myriad assets, its Mayan, Aztec and Zapotan sites juxtaposed with intriguing cities, Spanish colonial churches in their hundreds, a unique blend of cultures and cuisine, rainforest habitats of toucans and howler monkeys, river canyons, lake shores, and coasts on the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea.

Whatever your interests are, on our tailored small-group tours, Mexico will more than match your expectations.

Why book Mexico tours with Jules Verne?

With 45 years’ experience and a passion for creating extraordinary adventures, Jules Verne takes you to iconic landmarks and lesser-known sites, with expert tour guides who share their local knowledge, and show you hidden gems. Our journeys include sailing through the gigantic gorge of Sumidero Canyon, and through a jungle from Puerto Barras to isolated Livingston, accessible only by boat; a traditional Shaman ceremony at Chichicastenango, a visit to a Mezcal distillery to taste the smoky tequila-like spirit, and lunch at a typical Maya home in Uxmal.

All our guided tours to Mexico are ABTA and ATOL protected, and we offer a 100% price guarantee, so you can book with complete confidence.

When is the best time to visit Mexico?

The best time to visit Mexico depends on the specific regions and activities you have in mind. Generally, Mexico can be enjoyed year-round, but it's worth considering the weather and tourist seasons when planning your trip. Here's a breakdown of the different seasons and their highlights:

High Season (November to April): This is the peak tourist season in Mexico, particularly in popular destinations such as Mexico City, Cancun, and the Riviera Maya. The weather during this time is generally dry and pleasant, with comfortable temperatures. However, it's also the busiest time, so expect larger crowds and higher prices. It's advisable to book accommodations and activities in advance.

Shoulder Season (May and October): The shoulder seasons offer a good balance between favourable weather and fewer crowds. May is considered the beginning of the rainy season in some regions, but showers are usually brief and intermittent. October can be a transitional period with some rain but is generally pleasant. It's a great time to explore destinations like Mexico City, Oaxaca, and the Yucatan Peninsula.

Low Season (June to September): This period coincides with the rainy season in many parts of Mexico, particularly along the coasts. However, it's also the time when you can find lower prices, fewer tourists, and lush green landscapes. The rainy season does not mean constant rain, but rather intermittent showers or storms that often occur in the late afternoons or evenings. It's a good time to visit if you don't mind the occasional rain and want to take advantage of discounted rates.

Whale Watching Season (December to April): If you're interested in whale watching, particularly in Baja California Sur, the best time to visit is during the winter months. You can witness the incredible migration of gray whales and have the opportunity to see these majestic creatures up close.

Day of the Dead (October 31 to November 2): If you want to experience the vibrant cultural festivities of Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), plan your visit around late October to early November. This is a significant holiday in Mexico, especially in regions like Oaxaca and Mexico City, where you can witness colourful parades, elaborate altars, and traditional ceremonies.

It's important to note that Mexico is a diverse country with varying climates and microclimates, so weather patterns can vary between regions. Coastal areas, such as Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, tend to have a more tropical climate with higher temperatures and humidity year-round.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Mexico depends on your preferences, whether you prioritise good weather, cultural events, or quieter travel periods. Consider the specific regions you plan to visit and their climate, and choose a time that aligns with your interests and priorities.

What are the main attractions of Mexico?

Mexico offers a wealth of diverse attractions that cater to various interests and preferences. From ancient archaeological sites to breathtaking natural wonders and vibrant cultural experiences, here are some of the main highlights of Mexico:

Palenque: Located in the lush jungles of Chiapas, Palenque is an enchanting Mayan archaeological site. The intricately carved temples and structures surrounded by dense vegetation create a mystical ambiance. The Tomb of the Red Queen and the Temple of the Inscriptions are major highlights.

Copper Canyon: Often referred to as Mexico's Grand Canyon, Copper Canyon is a stunning natural wonder in the state of Chihuahua. Explore the vast network of canyons, take a scenic train ride through the rugged landscape, and witness the Tarahumara indigenous culture.

Mexico City: As the vibrant capital, Mexico City offers a mix of history, art, and cultural experiences. Visit the historic center, explore the ancient Templo Mayor ruins, admire world-class museums like the National Museum of Anthropology, and savor the diverse culinary scene.

Riviera Maya: Stretching along the Caribbean coast, the Riviera Maya offers beautiful white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and world-class resorts. Snorkel or dive in the Great Maya Reef, swim in cenotes (natural sinkholes), and explore eco-parks like Xcaret and Xel-Ha.

Oaxaca: Known for its rich indigenous heritage and colonial architecture, Oaxaca is a captivating city in southern Mexico. Explore the beautiful historic center, visit the ancient ruins of Monte Albán, indulge in Oaxacan cuisine, and experience vibrant festivals and traditional crafts.

Guanajuato: This charming colonial city is renowned for its colorful buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, and vibrant cultural scene. Explore the subterranean streets of the historic center, visit the iconic Juarez Theater, and take in the stunning views from the El Pipila monument.

Exploring Mexico's diverse offerings promises a memorable journey filled with rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and warm hospitality.

Will I need a visa to visit Mexico?

The visa requirements for visiting Mexico vary depending on your nationality and the duration of your stay. Here are some general guidelines:

Visa-Free Entry: Citizens of many countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and most European Union countries, do not require a visa for tourist visits to Mexico for stays of up to 180 days. This is known as a visa-free or visa-exempt entry. However, it's important to note that the exact duration of visa-free stay can vary by nationality, so it's recommended to check the specific requirements for your country of citizenship.

Tourist Card (FMM): Instead of a visa, most visitors to Mexico will need to obtain a Tourist Card, also known as an FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple). The FMM is a simple immigration form that you can usually obtain upon arrival at the airport or land border crossing. It is typically valid for stays of up to 180 days. Some airlines provide the FMM form during your flight, which you need to fill out before going through immigration.

Visitor Visa: If you plan to stay in Mexico for purposes other than tourism, such as for work, study, or a longer-term stay, you may need to apply for a visitor visa in advance. The requirements and application process for visitor visas can vary, so it's best to consult the nearest Mexican embassy or consulate in your country for specific information.

Passport Validity: Regardless of visa requirements, all travellers to Mexico must have a valid passport. It's recommended that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date to avoid any complications.

It's important to note that visa regulations can change, so it's advisable to check with the Mexican embassy or consulate in your home country or the official website of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding visa requirements.

Remember to plan ahead and ensure you have the necessary travel documents before your trip to Mexico. This will help ensure a smooth and hassle-free entry into the country, allowing you to fully enjoy your visit.

What is the currency of Mexico and how can I access my money?

The currency of Mexico is the Mexican Peso (MXN). Here are some tips on accessing and managing your money while in Mexico:

Currency Exchange: It's recommended to exchange your currency for Mexican Pesos upon arrival in Mexico. Currency exchange counters can be found at international airports, major hotels, and banks. While some establishments in tourist areas may accept U.S. dollars, it's generally more convenient to have local currency for smaller purchases, transportation, and local markets.

ATMs: ATMs are widely available throughout Mexico, especially in urban areas and popular tourist destinations. You can use your debit or credit card to withdraw Mexican Pesos directly from ATMs. This is often a convenient and cost-effective method, as you'll receive the current exchange rate. However, be mindful of potential fees charged by your bank and the ATM provider. Notify your bank in advance about your travel plans to avoid any issues with your card.

Credit Cards: Major credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger establishments in tourist areas. However, it's always a good idea to carry some cash for smaller establishments or places that may not accept cards. Notify your credit card company before your trip to inform them of your travel plans and to avoid any potential card blocks for suspicious activity.

Traveler's Checks: While traveler's checks used to be a popular way to carry money during travel, their use has declined in recent years. Many businesses no longer accept them, and they can be difficult to exchange. It's generally more convenient to rely on debit or credit cards, or cash for smaller transactions.

Safety and Security: As with any international travel, it's important to be cautious and aware of your surroundings when accessing your money. Use ATMs located in secure, well-lit areas, and cover the keypad when entering your PIN. Keep your cash and cards in a secure place, such as a money belt or a locked hotel safe. It's also a good idea to have a backup plan, such as carrying a second card or keeping emergency cash separate from your main funds.

Remember to check with your bank or financial institution for any specific guidelines or fees related to international transactions. By being prepared and informed, you can access and manage your money conveniently during your visit to Mexico.

Is Mexico a safe destination?

Mexico is a diverse country with a range of safety considerations depending on the region you plan to visit. While many travellers have safe and enjoyable experiences in Mexico, it's important to be aware of certain factors and take precautions to ensure your safety. Here are some key points to consider:

Safety Precautions: Like in any destination, it's advisable to take general safety precautions while in Mexico. This includes being aware of your surroundings, avoiding isolated or poorly lit areas at night, and securing your belongings. It's also recommended to use reliable transportation options, such as licensed taxis or reputable ride-sharing services.

Travel Advisory: Stay informed about the latest travel advisories issued by your government or relevant authorities. These advisories provide up-to-date information on safety and security conditions in different regions of Mexico. They may also offer specific guidance regarding potential risks, such as areas to avoid or precautions to take.

Popular Tourist Destinations: Major tourist destinations in Mexico, such as Mexico City, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Riviera Maya, have well-developed tourism infrastructure and generally maintain a higher level of security. These areas are heavily frequented by tourists and are actively monitored by local authorities to ensure the safety of visitors.

Regional Considerations: It's important to research and understand the specific safety situation in the region you plan to visit. Some areas of Mexico, particularly near the northern border or certain states experiencing drug-related violence, may have higher levels of security concerns. It's advisable to check travel advisories and consult with local experts or tour operators who have up-to-date knowledge of the region.

Tourist Assistance: Mexico places importance on the safety and well-being of its visitors. Tourist police and assistance centres are available in popular tourist areas to provide information, support, and assistance if needed. Familiarise yourself with the locations of these services and emergency contact numbers.

Health and Medical Considerations: Prioritise your health and safety by ensuring you have appropriate travel insurance that covers medical expenses. It's also advisable to check if any vaccinations are recommended or required before traveling to Mexico.

By being well-informed, using common sense, and following safety guidelines, you can have a safe and enjoyable experience in Mexico. It's always beneficial to research your destination, stay updated on travel advisories, and consult with reputable travel sources or local experts to make informed decisions about your travel plans.

Will I require vaccinations to visit Mexico?

The vaccination requirements for visiting Mexico depend on several factors, including your country of origin, the areas you plan to visit within Mexico, and your personal medical history. Here are some key points to consider regarding vaccinations for travel to Mexico:

Routine Vaccinations: It's recommended to ensure that your routine vaccinations are up to date before traveling to Mexico. These include vaccines such as measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTaP), polio, and influenza. Check with your healthcare provider to confirm that you are up to date on these vaccinations.

Hepatitis A: The hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for most travellers visiting Mexico, as the virus can be transmitted through contaminated food or water. It's a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider to determine if the hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for you based on your specific travel plans and medical history.

Typhoid: Depending on your travel plans and the areas you'll be visiting, your healthcare provider may recommend the typhoid vaccine. This is especially relevant if you will be visiting rural areas or areas with inadequate sanitation and access to clean food and water.

Other Vaccinations: Depending on your travel plans and personal health status, your healthcare provider may recommend additional vaccinations such as hepatitis B, rabies, or others. These recommendations are typically based on factors such as the duration of your stay, specific activities planned, and potential exposure to certain diseases.

It's essential to consult with a healthcare professional or a travel medicine specialist to assess your individual vaccination needs. They can provide personalised recommendations based on your health history, travel itinerary, and any specific concerns.

In addition to vaccinations, it's important to take other preventive measures to protect your health while traveling in Mexico. These include practicing good hygiene, drinking bottled water or using water purification methods, consuming food from reputable sources, and taking precautions to avoid insect bites.

Keep in mind that vaccination requirements and recommendations may change, so it's advisable to consult with your healthcare provider or visit a reputable travel clinic well in advance of your trip to ensure you have the necessary vaccinations and medical advice specific to your travel plans.

What is the food like in Mexico?

Mexican cuisine is known for its rich flavorus, vibrant colours, and diverse ingredients. It offers a delightful array of traditional dishes that showcase the country's culinary heritage and regional specialties. Here's a glimpse into the flavours and highlights of Mexican cuisine:

Tacos: Tacos are a quintessential part of Mexican cuisine. They come in various forms, such as soft corn tortillas filled with succulent grilled meats like carne asada (grilled beef) or al pastor (marinated pork), topped with onions, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime. Vegetarian options like grilled cactus (nopales) or sautéed mushrooms are also popular.

Guacamole and Salsas: Mexico is famous for its guacamole, a creamy avocado-based dip flavoured with lime, onions, cilantro, and sometimes tomatoes. Salsas, ranging from mild to fiery, are a staple accompaniment to many Mexican dishes. Whether it's the smoky and spicy chipotle salsa or the fresh and tangy salsa verde (made with tomatillos), they add a burst of flavour to any meal.

Tamales: Tamales are a traditional Mexican dish made of masa (corn dough) filled with various ingredients such as meats, cheese, or vegetables. They are wrapped in corn husks or banana leaves and steamed to perfection. Tamales come in numerous regional variations and are often enjoyed as a comforting breakfast or snack.

Mole: Mole is a complex and flavorful sauce made from a combination of chilies, nuts, seeds, spices, and chocolate. It is a signature dish in Mexican cuisine, with different regions boasting their own unique versions. Mole poblano from Puebla is one of the most well-known varieties, characterised by its rich, dark chocolate-infused sauce served over chicken or turkey.

Seafood: With its extensive coastline, Mexico offers a delightful selection of seafood dishes. From ceviche (marinated raw fish or shrimp) to grilled fish tacos and shrimp cocktails, coastal regions like Baja California, Yucatan Peninsula, and the Pacific Coast are renowned for their fresh and flavourful seafood preparations.

Street Food: Mexico's street food scene is a true culinary adventure. From mouthwatering quesadillas and tortas (Mexican sandwiches) to antojitos like elote (grilled corn on the cob) and churros (fried dough pastries), the streets are filled with delicious and affordable options that showcase the diversity of Mexican flavours.

Beverages: Mexico has an array of refreshing beverages to complement its cuisine. Agua frescas are fruit-based beverages that come in various flavours like horchata (rice and cinnamon), Jamaica (hibiscus flower), and tamarindo (tamarind). Mexican beers, such as Corona and Dos Equis, are popular choices, and traditional spirits like tequila and mezcal are renowned worldwide.

These are just a few highlights of the vibrant and flavourful Mexican cuisine. Each region has its own culinary specialties and traditional dishes, so exploring the local cuisine is an exciting part of any visit to Mexico. From street stalls to fine dining establishments, the flavours of Mexico are sure to leave you satisfied and craving for more.

Can I drink the tap water in Mexico?

It is generally not recommended to drink tap water in Mexico. While efforts have been made to improve water quality and infrastructure, the tap water may still contain bacteria, viruses, or parasites that can cause digestive issues for those who are not accustomed to it. Drinking untreated tap water can lead to traveler's diarrhea or other waterborne illnesses.

To ensure your safety, it's best to stick to bottled water or properly treated water during your stay in Mexico. Here are some options to consider:

Bottled Water: Purchase commercially sealed bottled water from reputable brands. This is widely available in stores, supermarkets, and restaurants throughout Mexico. Look for water bottles with an intact seal to ensure their safety.

Filtered or Purified Water: Many hotels and accommodations provide filtered or purified water for guests. You can also find filtered water stations or water dispensers in certain public places. Confirm with the establishment about the water source and treatment method used.

Boiled Water: If you have access to a kitchen or are staying in a vacation rental, you can boil tap water for at least one minute to make it safe for consumption. Allow it to cool before using it for drinking, making tea or coffee, or brushing your teeth.

Ice and Beverages: Be cautious when consuming beverages with ice. Some establishments use purified water for ice cubes, while others may not. It's advisable to ask whether the ice is made from purified water to ensure its safety. Additionally, opt for bottled or canned beverages, or those prepared with boiled or purified water.

Fruits and Vegetables: When consuming fruits and vegetables, it's best to peel them or wash them thoroughly with purified water before eating, as they may have been rinsed with tap water during preparation.

Remember that different regions of Mexico may have varying water quality, so it's important to exercise caution even if locals drink the tap water. If you're uncertain about the water source or quality, it's always safer to choose bottled water or other treated options.

Prioritising your health and taking precautions with water consumption will help ensure a safe and enjoyable trip to Mexico.

How does the rooming work on tours?

Small group tours in Mexico typically involve a set itinerary where you travel with a group of fellow travellers and a tour leader/guide. Accommodation arrangements  vary depending on the specific tour you choose. Here are some common aspects of rooming arrangements on small group tours:

Shared Rooms: In order to promote camaraderie and facilitate interaction among group members, most tours arrange shared accommodation. This means you will be paired with another member of the same gender from the group to share a room. Roommates may sometimes change periodically throughout the tour.

Single Supplement: If you prefer to have your own room and privacy, you may have the option to pay a single supplement fee. This additional fee allows you to have your own room for the duration of the tour. However, please note that single supplements can vary in cost and availability.

Roommate Matching: Tour operators usually offer roommate matching services, where they try to pair you with a suitable roommate based on your preferences, such as age range. This can help ensure compatibility and a more enjoyable experience for all participants.

Rooming Preferences: When booking your small group tour, it's important to communicate your rooming preferences to the tour operator. If you have specific requirements or preferences, such as sharing with a friend or a specific roommate request, it's advisable to inform the tour operator during the booking process.

It's important to carefully read the tour details and inclusions provided by the tour operator to understand their specific rooming policies. If having your own room is a priority, make sure to inquire about the availability of single supplements and any associated costs before booking your tour.

Keep in mind that while sharing a room with a fellow traveller can be a great way to meet new people and build connections, having your own room provides more privacy and flexibility. Consider your preferences and the dynamics of the tour when deciding whether to opt for a shared room or pay for a single supplement.

Remember to communicate your needs and preferences clearly with the tour operator during the booking process to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable accommodation experience on your small group tour in Mexico.

Is Mexico a good destination for solo travellers?

Yes, Mexico can be a fantastic destination for solo travellers. With its diverse attractions, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality, Mexico offers plenty of opportunities for solo exploration and memorable experiences. Here are some reasons why Mexico is a great choice for solo travellers:

Safety: While it's important to exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings, Mexico is generally safe for travellers. Popular tourist destinations and well-traveled areas have robust security measures in place. It's advisable to research the local customs, follow common-sense safety practices, and stay informed about any travel advisories or specific safety considerations for the region you plan to visit.

Friendly Locals: Mexicans are known for their warm and welcoming nature. Solo travellers often find that locals are friendly, helpful, and eager to share their culture and traditions. Engaging with locals can enhance your experience and provide valuable insights into the local way of life.

Cultural Experiences: Mexico's rich cultural heritage offers a wealth of experiences for solo travellers. From exploring ancient ruins to participating in traditional festivals and culinary adventures, there are numerous opportunities to immerse yourself in Mexican culture. Joining a cooking class, taking a salsa dancing lesson, or visiting local markets can connect you with the vibrant local scene.

Ease of Navigation: Mexico has a well-developed tourism infrastructure, making it relatively easy to navigate as a solo traveler. Major cities have efficient public transportation systems, and tourist destinations are often well-connected. Additionally, many people in the tourism industry speak English, which can facilitate communication for non-Spanish speakers.

Solo-Friendly Activities: Mexico offers a range of activities that are well-suited for solo travellers. Whether it's exploring archaeological sites, relaxing on pristine beaches, embarking on hiking or adventure excursions, or indulging in street food and local cuisine, there is something for every solo adventurer.

Group Tours and Activities: If you prefer to join organized activities or meet fellow travelers, Mexico offers plenty of options for group tours and excursions. These can provide opportunities for socialising, making new friends, and sharing experiences with like-minded individuals.

As with any destination, it's important to exercise caution and follow common-sense safety practices while traveling solo in Mexico. Research your chosen destinations, plan your itinerary in advance, and stay informed about local customs and norms. By being prepared and open to new experiences, solo travellers can have a rewarding and memorable time exploring the wonders of Mexico.

Are there any cultural norms in Mexico I should be aware of?

Yes, there are some cultural norms and practices in Mexico that it's helpful to be aware of as a visitor. Respecting and understanding these customs can enhance your experience and help you connect with the local culture. Here are a few key cultural norms in Mexico:

Greetings and Politeness: Mexicans are generally polite and value greetings and pleasantries. When meeting someone, it's customary to greet them with a handshake and maintain eye contact. In more informal settings, a hug or a kiss on the cheek may be exchanged between acquaintances or friends. Use "Buenos días" (good morning), "Buenas tardes" (good afternoon), or "Buenas noches" (good evening) as appropriate when entering or leaving a place.

Personal Space and Physical Contact: Mexicans often have a closer physical proximity compared to some other cultures. It is common to stand closer to each other during conversations and maintain occasional physical contact, such as a pat on the back or a touch on the forearm. However, it's important to respect personal boundaries and gauge the comfort level of the person you are interacting with.

Time and Punctuality: Mexico has a more relaxed attitude towards time, and punctuality may not be as strict as in some other cultures. It is not uncommon for social events or meetings to start a little later than the scheduled time. However, it is still advisable to arrive on time for business appointments and formal engagements.

Respect for Elders and Authority: Mexican culture places great importance on respect for elders and authority figures. Use formal titles (such as "Señor" for men and "Señora" for married women) when addressing older individuals as a sign of respect. It's also customary to show respect for police officers, military personnel, and other authority figures.

Dining Etiquette: When dining in Mexico, it is polite to wait for the host or elder to start eating before you begin. It's customary to keep your hands visible and not place them on your lap during the meal. Also, avoid resting your elbows on the table. When finished eating, place your utensils parallel on the plate to signal that you have finished.

Tipping: Tipping is customary in Mexico, particularly in restaurants and for various services. In restaurants, a tip of around 10-15% of the bill is generally expected. It's advisable to check if a service charge has already been included. Tip hotel staff, tour guides, and taxi drivers as appropriate, depending on the quality of service received.

Religious Traditions: Mexico has a strong Catholic influence, and religious customs and traditions are an integral part of the culture. When visiting churches or religious sites, dress modestly and respectfully, covering your shoulders and legs. Avoid loud or disruptive behavior during religious ceremonies.

By being aware of and respecting these cultural norms, you can navigate social interactions in Mexico with sensitivity and appreciation for the local customs. Remember, Mexicans are generally welcoming and understanding towards visitors, and a genuine effort to understand and embrace their culture will be warmly received.

Tonight we enjoy a traditional Mexican dinner and show in Plaza Garibaldi!

Once we’ve checked in to our accommodation, we’ll head out and discover some of the streets by moonlight, enjoying the local bars and restaurants!

mexico tour groups

TEHUANTEPEC

First up today we’ll explore the streets of Oaxaca that were sleeping when we arrived last night. We'll see some traditional markets and cathedrals, visit a local family to learn about how hand-made textiles are produced, then head off into the valley to visit a traditional mezcal distillery. We’ll learn all about this energising spirit before continuing our journey down to Tehuantepec, where we will spend the night.

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS

Hopping on a local boat we’ll cruise through the immense Canyon of Sumidero, spotting towering waterfalls, lush jungle valleys, searching for monkeys and coming face to face with crocodiles. We’ll then head up into mountains to our next destination - the iconic city of San Cristobal de las Casas. Enjoy a short walking tour and Pox tasting - a traditional drink from Chiapas region, before going out to an incredible dinner and a few drinks to take in the excitement of the town.

mexico tour groups

A cobblestoned city maintaining much of its Spanish colonial layout, today San Cristobal de las Casas is ours to discover. We’ll visit a local family in the beautiful small town of Zinacantan, learning, making and eating a traditional breakfast with the family. We'll learn more about the traditions of this unique town, before stopping in San Juan Chamula on our way back to San Cristobal de las Casas. The afternoon is free for you to visit the local markets, try some of the famous Chiapas coffee, and see the beautiful churches in San Cristobal de la Casas.

mexico tour groups

Leaving beautiful San Cristobal, today we hop on an included flight across Mexico and land in the wonderful hustle and bustle of Cancun, no time wasted. Situated on the Yucatán Peninsula, we’ll get our first taste of Caribbean bliss and boujee-ness. This afternoon all you need to worry about is which cocktail to order by the pool – what a life.

mexico tour groups

ISLA HOLBOX

This morning we’re off on a ferry to the paradise of Isla Holbox. When we say paradise, we mean it – think sun-drenched, powder-white beaches, emerald waters, rich marine life and rustic villages. We’ll have time to settle into the pace of island life, tuck into some authentic food, watch the sunset and pull up at a beach bar for an evening of tropical beats under the stars.

mexico tour groups

Today we get to dive deep (literally) into the beauty of Isla Holbox with a boat tour. Keeping our eyes peeled for the famously photogenic pink flamingos, we’ll stop off at hidden island oasis’s and check out a local cenote. This afternoon is yours to find a hammock to lounge in, and maybe crack into that book you’ve been carrying around. Sea, relax, repeat, it’s the perfect day to unplug.

mexico tour groups

PLAYA DEL CARMEN

An early start to create some core memories – we’ll catch sunrise on the sandbank in Holbox before our Mexican adventure continues back into the Yucatán. Swapping slow island vibes for something a bit more high energy, we’ll check into our final hotel in Playa del Carmen and have plenty of time to explore all the beaches, bars and tacos this world-famous hotspot has to offer. Souvenir shopping, anyone?

mexico tour groups

Getting into explorer mode, today we head to one of the New Seven Wonders of the World - Chichén Itzá. A local guide will introduce us to the myths and majesty of these iconic ruins, including Temple of Kukulkan (‘El Castillo’), the Platform of the Skulls, and the Plaza of a Thousand Columns. Later, we'll have a once-in-a-lifetime experience in the crystal waters of a stunning cenote, a natural limestone swimming hole in a secret subterranean world.

mexico tour groups

Fiesta, siesta, today we do it all! Hitting the road this morning, we’re off to Tulum. We'll have the option to marvel in the archeological Tulum ruins, or chill in the bluer-than-blue waters of Tulum beach. Back in Playa there’s time to get ready before our final group dinner and drinks. Let’s smash some avocado, down a tequila shot (or more), get a little loco – new friends by our side.

mexico tour groups

Time to bid farewell as our unforgettable Mexican adventure comes to an end. You can either check out and make your way back home or continue your travels in Central America. If you need any assistance planning onward travel, we’ll be there to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

mexico tour groups

The great thing about Mexico is that it’s usually warm year round, so you can go anytime. Between December and April it’s the dry season and there’s virtually no rain, and the coolest months are between December and February.

While there are certain areas within Mexico known for crime, these are limited and nowhere near where INTRO goes.

Mexico is a very popular tourist destination and safe to travel to, with only the need for the usual commonsense precautions we recommend for all our destinations.

At INTRO we have not only chosen the most beautiful and fascinating areas of Mexico but also places we know to be safe. Another benefit of travelling Mexico as part of a guided group tour.

This trip covers a large part of Mexico, which means some early starts and long travel days, on occasionally winding and bumpy roads. There can be potential delays due to traffic and road construction. We make these days as enjoyable as possible by having private transportation throughout, and including some interesting rest stops. We recommend a neck pillow to catch up on some sleep on these days.

We stay at a mix of accommodations on this trip. From traditional Mexican style 4-star hotels, to quaint family-owned guesthouses, and a beautiful waterfront resort!

Mexico has some absolutely delicious cuisine! In most places there are vegetarian/vegan options but they may be limited in more rural locations due to the common use of meat and cheese in traditional cooking. However, your group leader and local guide will provide recommendations on the best options.

Chichen Itza Mayan Pyramid

Ancient and brand-new, all at once

Beyond the stereotypes of mariachi bands and tacos, Mexico is a cultural giant of the Americas. A massive and diverse country, its history stretches across thousands of years from the ancient Olmec, Maya, and Aztec, though the arrival of Cortés and three centuries of harsh Spanish rule. For all its familiarity, Mexico is capable of surprising at every turn; to make the mistake of reducing it to a beach resort is like confusing the USA with Las Vegas. Certainly, beaches and beach life rank high as reasons to visit. Add to the mix ancient sites and vibrant indigenous culture, the cosmopolitan neighbourhoods of the world's largest city and a cuisine successfully exported around the world, and you've got yourself una buena vacacion .

PYRAMIDS, VOLCANOES & PRETTY PUEBLOS

Today is free for you to indulge in your own personal interests. You’re spoilt with options!

We’ll take a short drive to the nearby village of Santiago Matatlán (“The World Capital of Mezcal”) and visit a small family owned farm where you’ll learn more about Mezcal culture, production and traditions. Local farmers will teach us the traditional techniques from harvesting the agave plant all the way through to distillation and we’ll finish off with a traditional lunch and a round of mezcal tasting.

HIKING, HOT SPRINGS & MEXICAN CUISINE

Free day to explore. There’s a huge variety of things to do. If you’re a foodie then Oaxaca is world renowned for gastronomy and is the perfect place to enjoy an authentic Mexican cooking class. For nature lovers the spectacular Hierve el Agua is a must visit, with it’s stunning landscapes and “petrified waterfall” rock formations. And for the more active, the neighbouring Sierra Norte offers breathtaking hiking trails through rugged mountains and indigeneous villages.

BEACH TIME!

Today we head to the coast as we make our way to Tulum, the small and stylish beach town located in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. It’s a stunning setting where golden sandy beaches and crystal clear Caribbean sea blend in perfect harmony with the ancient ruins of a former Mayan port city. Following a short flight from Oaxaca you can check into your hotel and then go grab a margarita and settle in to your new exotic surroundings.

BIKES, CENOTES & MAYAN RUINS

It’s time to discover all that Tulum has to offer and what better way to do that than on two wheels? We’ll bike quiet roads, lush forest trails and scenic beach paths to discover the full diversity of this fantastic little town. We’ll visit the Mayan ruins and learn about their rich cultural heritage. We’ll discover diverse ecosystems and stop off for a dip in some of the most breathtaking Cenotes (crystal clear swimming holes formed within vast cave systems). And we’ll enjoy the tastiest of tacos!

YOGA & CHILL DAY

We’ll ease our way in with an early morning yoga session and then the rest of the day is yours to enjoy this beachside paradise. Maybe it could be that chill day you’ve been waiting for – the perfect opportunity to relax on the beach? Or if you prefer to be more active you could do some kayaking, stand up paddle boarding or even head into the pueblo and browse the many boutique stores on offer. For our last evening in Mexico we’ll share one final group dinner and (just maybe) say farewell over a mojito or two.

What Our Guests Say

Other Way Round traveller testimonial of Mexico group tour

“Head and Shoulders Above the Rest”

Having been on numerous group holidays with more than 5 different companies, my standards are high and I can honestly say that Other Way Round is head and shoulders above all of them.

“Not Mass Produced or Touristy”

What I loved about this trip was that it didn’t feel mass produced and touristy. There was a sense of originality to it and uniqueness about the trip and the itinerary .

“Completely Hassle Free”

I usually travel DIY, where I arrange and book everything myself, and it was such a welcome change to have all that time and stress of booking the different elements of the trip taken away from me.

“Trip of a Lifetime”

I will never forget this trip. Not only because of the country itself, but because of the experience that Other Way Round gave me and the other group members. It was a trip of a lifetime and you will be missing out if you don’t just book it!

If your booking is within 60 days, then you must pay the full balance at that point.

Is the deposit refundable?

No, the deposit is non-refundable .

However, if you can no longer make the trip you can transfer that deposit onto any other future trip.

Visas, vaccinations & packing lists?

Two months before your trip you will receive a comprehensive pre-trip pack which tells you everything you need to get prepared for the trip (including info on visas, vaccinations & packing lists).

In general, most of our guests don’t need visas to come to Mexico.

Do you cater for special dietary requirements?

Please be aware though that there will not likely be the same range of options as you have available in your home country.

Will I get to meet other members of the group before the trip?

In the week before the trip we will create a WhatsApp group with all the people joining the trip. This is a great opportunity to connect ahead of the trip.

Are the hotels listed on the website the actual hotels you use?

Generally yes, it will be these hotels.

From time to time we may need to change a specific hotel if for example it’s not available on those given dates. But in such situations, we will always replace with another hotel at the same quality.

What’s the cancellation policy?

The £200/$250 deposit is non-refundable. However, if you need to cancel at any point, you can put this towards any future trip you book with us (in any location).

The rest of the balance is refundable up until two months before the trip. From that point we have to start committing funds to local suppliers and so:-

> 30-60 days before trip – 50% refund

> 0–30 days before trip – 0% refund

But, we also recommend that you take out travel insurance to cover you for any unexpected last-minute cancellation.

What People Say . . .

"My wife and I have traveled with Sharon three times – to Oaxaca, Chiapas and Guatemala. All three trips rank in or close to our top five, and we have traveled the world. It's hard to praise these trips highly enough. Great sights, fantastic food, hotels full of character, wonderful guides and drivers, comfortable transport. Plenty of fodder for photos often including ancient pyramids and ball courts. Our fellow travelers have always been great companions. And we always bring our luggage home full of crafts by local artisans, rugs, ceramics, wood carvings, embroidered clothing, mouth blown glass, etc.

Sharon probably wouldn't thank me for saying how long she has been organizing these trips, but, needless to say, she has it down. As a weaver herself, she has established contacts with the studios of many regional artisans and has arranged visits to the studios of a good number. Also, the overall logistics of travel have been flawless. We are looking forward to traveling with Sharon again."

Mexico group tours for solo travelers

Travel solo as part of a group tour to Mexico

Why travel solo to Mexico?

Mexico is known for mezcal-mixing beach bars, history-rich cities and colorful locals. By travelling solo, you’ll find there’s plenty more to be discovered too.

Fresh tacos bursting with chilli and herbs, a plate of steamed tamales, shredded beef soaked in lime juice… Mexico beckons foodies from all over the world – especially to the street markets of Oaxaca.

If it’s beaches you’re after, Mexico offers some of Central America’s best, from the pelican-roamed Pacific stretches of Baja California to the calm Caribbean coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. Whichever you pick, white-sand beaches and abundant wildlife are all part of the scene. So, what are you waiting for? Take off for an adventure then touch down for some beach time…

Top places to visit in Mexico

Baja california sur.

This Mexico hot spot was once called ‘the world’s aquarium’ thanks to its abundance of aquatic life. If you want to spend your days overlooking the Pacific Ocean, drinking cocktails by the beach and swimming amongst marine wildlife, then head to Baja.

A tropical paradise with white sandy beaches and emerald seas, this city on the Yucatán Peninsula is a prime resort hotspot. But we recommend venturing beyond the resorts to experience the best of Cancún. Visit Nichupté Lagoon, a vast mangrove area that’s home to crocodiles, iguanas and leopard frogs, or head downtown to experience local life.

To explore Mexico’s Mayan history, head to Tulum. This ancient port city is full of well-preserved ruins, including a castle. The nearby coastal region of Parque Nacional Tulum is where you can explore mangroves and natural limestone sinkholes known as cenotes.

Regarded as the culinary capital of Mexico, this southwestern city is set amid a striking mountainscape. Sample some of the best food Mexico has to offer in its street food stalls and taste some of the nation’s finest beers in a local brewery. Head out to the Sierra Norte mountains to explore the vast natural beauty surrounding this city.

A US tourist was killed by elephant in Zambia Wednesday that pulled her from her tour group’s vehicle and trampled her, local officials said.

Juliana Gle Tourneau, 64, of New Mexico, was with a group that had stopped near the Maramba Cultural Bridge in Livingstone due to traffic from an elephant herd when one of the animals attacked, Southern Province Police Commissioner Auxensio Daka told the Zambian broadcaster ZNBC.

The elephant tossed Tourneau out of the group’s vehicle and trampled her to death.

Wednesday’s incident marked the second fatal elephant attack on a US tourist in Zambia this year: In March, another traveler was killed when an elephant charged at their truck and flipped it over.

Local authorities have cautioned visitors to exercise caution when observing wildlife.
