Margarita island ( Isla de Margarita ) is the largest island of the Nueva Esparta State of Venezuela with a total area of 934 km², mountainous terrain and a tropical Caribbean climate. It is a 35 minute flight or a couple of hours by sea using the ferry from Puerto La Cruz or Cumana as it is only a short distance off the northern coast of the mainland of Venezuela.

The Province of Margarita was founded in 1525 and was the oldest of those that in 1777 formed the Post of Captain-General of Venezuela.

The island has more than 50 beaches which are scattered along 106 miles of coastline and is blessed with an average of over 320 days a year of sun and beautiful tropical beaches lined with palm trees.

US and EU citizens don’t need a visa to visit Venezuela making Margarita easy to access. The climate is warm and pleasant with vacationers visiting Margarita all months of the year.

The airport has one terminal divided into two separate sections for international and domestic flights. The two terminal are separated by a few moments walk. Via ferry from mainland Venezuela at Puerto La Cruz with Conferry . Passenger/vehicular ferries operate the route providing access to the island for motorbikes, cars, buses and trucks. The Carmen Ernestina or any express ferry is preferable.

Get around [ edit ]

When traveling about on the island, ensure that you carry sufficient local currency in smaller denominations so that you can make purchases without running into problems. Smaller local traders and transport operators may not be able to give you sufficient change for larger bills and will most likely be reluctant to accept foreign currency as it will be difficult and troublesome for then to exchange it later.

Taxis hire is subject to prior negotiation with the driver. Taxis can often be chartered for a day if required. Most of the taxi have fix rates and should be inexpensively priced.

The taxi painted in white with yellow license plate are often considered to be the most reliable.

• Por puesto service most of the island. These are a little like a shared taxi having much more flexibility than a conventional bus service. Many locals use the Por Puesto services which normally travel a fixed route offering a cheap and safe alternative to a taxi. The journey can sometimes be a little slow however, as they often stop to pick up and discharge passengers at frustratingly short intervals and this may draw a trip out considerably.
• Buses run to the most destinations in daytime only. Typical service hours are daily from 6AM-8PM with reasonably priced fares. Flag the bus down if you are on the side of the road and want it to stop. Check the rate to your destination with the driver as you board the bus and pay when you arrive. The local buses may be a little too rustic for some visitors used to more modern transportation systems but they are a good inexpensive way to get about and to meet the local people.
• Buseta (mini-buses) offer an opportunity to travel cheaply and to get in touch with the locals. Trip times will depend on distance and traffic conditions. Knowing a little Spanish is always helpful to get through, but some locals will be pleased to practice their English with you. Fares are inexpensive and depend on the length of your travel. Before boarding a mini-bus, ask the driver how much the fare is to your specific destination to ensure there are no misunderstandings.

Rental cars are available from major chains such as Avis, Budget and Hertz, as well as local operators. Look for established operators with an identifiable operating base. Outlets are to be found in the main city of Porlamar, at Playa El Yaque, and there are several offices and kiosks at the islands airport. Always use common sense when renting and make sure to check for any hidden costs and levies that may appear when you return the car. To rent a car you will need a current driver’s license and a passport. Make sure you have adequate insurance to cover any loss/damage or purchase a Collision Damage Waiver and do not leave your passport, drivers licence, or any other important documentation with the rental company as a security deposit. Since in most cases the contract will be in Spanish, make sure you understand what you are signing. Do not take the rental agents word in translating it, you are signing a legally binding contract. Thoroughly check over the vehicle including the glass and all panels for any damage and have the salesperson initial a damage record. If in doubt at all photograph the vehicle from all sides prior to taking delivery. Make sure that the vehicle is registered with the municipality as a rental car, there will be a sticker on the drivers side windshield. Check the vehicle over thoroughly before you leave the depot to ensure everything is functioning on the vehicle and that it is roadworthy. Fuel is cheap so most companies do not require the car be returned full.

If considering making a trip to the mainland on the ferry and taking a rental vehicle with you then please ensure beforehand that your rental and insurance contract permits the vehicle traveling off the island.

Margarita Island is often called the Pearl of the Caribbean. The island of Margarita has a wide range of restaurants and local eating houses to cater for all budgets and styles. It is customary for a 10% service charge to be added to your bill. While your server may receive a small portion of this, it is not a tip for your server. In most cases part of it goes to the "house" for breakage and incidentals, with maybe a small portion split between the help. If you received good service, it is customary to tip your server. Some go as far as rewarding the bartender separately when eating out and their service was exceptional. Don't be surprised if you order a mixed drink and the bartender brings the bottle of liquor, glasses of ice and mixer to your table. A bartender pouring a triple shot of liquor for the price of a single is not unusual.

Margarita is one of the Caribbean Islands and has many bars and clubs, and exotic tropical drinks are a favourite here.

There are many popular tropical drinks on the island of Margarita. Just ask at the club, hotel, bar or restaurant you are visiting and the local bartender will no doubt be pleased to get things moving. Watch out, some of these drinks can be a little potent.

• Cuba Libre Load the glass with ice, add rum to just under the brim, add a splash of Coca Cola, serve with a limon wedge.
• Coco Loco 1 fresh coconut, 1 cup ice, 1 ounce white tequila, 1 ounce melon liqueur, 1 ounce coconut rum, 1 ounce pineapple juice, 1 Tablespoon sugar, 1/2 fresh limon . Slice a couple of inches off the top of the coconut, keeping the coconut milk inside. Put everything inside the coconut and squeeze the limon half over the mixture then drop the limon in. Stir, drink, repeat.
• Margarita Mojito 1 teaspoon powdered sugar, juice from 1 limon , 4 mint leaves, 1 sprig of mint, Cacique Rum, club soda. Put the mint leaves into glass and squeeze the juice from a cut limon over it. Add the powdered sugar, then crush the mint into the limon juice and sugar with a muddler or spoon. Add crushed ice add rum until glass almost full, stir, add a splash of club soda and garnish with mint sprig.
• Kapiroska Squeeze the juice from one limon into a glass, add 2 tablespoons of powder sugar, fill glass with crushed ice then add vodka until almost full and shake for a full minute. Strain into clean glass and garnish with limon wedge, drink, repeat.
• El Ritual is not about mixing the flavors in a glass, but setting up the steps that allow you to mix the flavors in your mouth. First pour a shot-glass of Pampero Aniversario (aged Venezuelan rum), next you need a limon wedge, then you pour brown sugar and instant coffee into two separate piles on a small dish. Dip one side of the limon into the sugar, the other into the coffee and bite and suck on it, chug the rum and let the flavors intermingle in your mouth before swallowing.

A limon is a cross between a lemon and a lime and is common on Margarita Island

Keep in mind that the beds in many hotels (mostly up to the mid-range levels) are nothing more than mattresses on concrete slabs that resemble box springs. Also called Isla Margarita, it is floating n the Caribbean Sea, facing the north-east coast of Venezuela, a South American nation. Venezuela’s eastern side faces the Atlantic Ocean.

Venezuela was once a Spanish colony. It declared independence and joined Columbia.  Finally, it became a full independent nation in 1830. It is still called a Latin American country.

Contrary to popular assumption, Venezuela is the most modernized of all the South American countries.

Overview of Margarita:

It is part of the Venezuelan state known as Nueva Esparta. The island is largely mountainous. Being a Caribbean Island, Margarita is tropical in nature.

The mountains wear green cape and is really lush. That gives the island a terrific tropical look.

Margarita has two siblings, namely:

• Coche Island
• Cubagua Island

La Asuncion is the capital of Nueva Esparta state. It is located on Margarita Island.

How to go to Margarita Island?

The island has an airport in Porlamar, a portal city on the island’s south coast.

The island’s capital city La Asuncion is situated 10 km away from Porlamar.

It receives flights from Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. The flight duration is only 35 minutes.

Travel by ferry from Caracas to Margarita Island.

The distance between the capital of Venezuela (Caracas) to Porlamar port city is about 480 km.

There is a ferry service that connects the two destinations. The voyage involves about 7 hours.

 Where to stay on Margarita?

For the rich and famous, the best choice is Sunsol Isla Caribe. It’s obviously a seafront resort with luxury guaranteed.

For the mid-range travellers, the Costa Caribe resort is the best bet.

What to eat on the island?

It is a fish fry that was marinated in lemon juice before frying.  When served, you can find raw onion rings and finely-chopped cilantro on top of the dish.

It is mainly a cabbage salad that is served with rice or ceviche.

Mashed or fried raw banana

This is a spring roll with stuffing of meat, and vegetables. It is dipped in ketchup before every bite.

Playa Pampatar Beach

It is a popular beach of semi-circular shape. Abutting the beach, there are several residences and hotels.

This beach is part of the south coastal city of Porlamar.

Sambil Shopping Mall

Even though Pampatar is a small town, the mall appears oversized-isn’t it?

Nonetheless, it is where you spend some time having visited Porlamar, 10 km from Pampatar Beach.

Punta Ballena Beach

This beach is at the southern end of the island. There is an ancient lighthouse too but I think it is not open for the tourists.

Playa al Yaque

It is where, water sports are famous. Both windsurfing, and wave surfing are played.

Kite-surfing is also available for adventure veterans.

Seafood stalls that sell, just-caught fish, and crab fritters do brisk business.

Playa el Agua

I think ‘playa’ means ‘beach’ in Spanish. Please be aware that, Spanish is the official language in entire Venezuela.

It is an affluent seafront with the backdrop of beautiful, tall buildings. El Morro is a must-visit place on the island.

All the beaches on the island are covered with white sand that makes the beaches attractive.

See the Fort of Santa Rosa.

A Spanish construction, the fort is built on a mountain. The view is fantastic from that height.

Santa Rosa Fort is situated right in the heart of La Asuncion. Invariably, your local tour of Margarita starts with the visit to the fort because; your first impression of this Venezuelan island should be good.

I saw several photos of the island from the fort. The green cover is everywhere. It is such a pleasant sight to the eyes.

Laguna de la Restinga

Yes, the name points to a small lagoon that is part of the national park with the same name.

The national park comes under a wetland and hence a Ramsar Site. This implies, it is an important birding area because of the availability of abundant prey.

The place of the salty lagoon and the national park is quite close to Macanao Peninsula, near the island’s western coast.

Here, you get the rare opportunity to see a sandbar that connects two water-bodies.

In this case, the two water bodies are the Caribbean Sea, and the Restinga Lagoon whose depth is only 8 feet.

When translated into English, it reads, “Basilica of Our Lady of El Valle.

An important festival is held by the church during September, every year. It draws thousands of pilgrims.

Playa Punta Arenas

It’s an uncrowded beach on the western coast of the island. Since the beach receives very few visitors, somehow, the sea is also rather calm with gentle waves.

The word, ‘punta’ implies the playa (beach) is at the tip of the land. In this case, it is the western tip.

Clams and starfish are washed ashore as if to show what is beneath the water.

Go to the mountains on a horse

For once, you get a lifetime opportunity to ride a horse, that too on a mountain trail that keeps ascending.

Lush forests on either side of the trail are pleasing to the eyes.

Marine Museum

I thought an aquarium will pull more visitors than a museum of marine biology. Maybe, the museum is intended for educational purposes only.

Actually, there is an aquarium inside the museum. Isn’t it a bad idea to name the place as an aquarium than a museum?

The star attraction in the aquarium is the “sea horses”.

I think Margarita Island doesn’t draw visitors from abroad. Only the people of Venezuela occasionally go to the island to unwind .

Venezuelan airlines (Avior or Estelar) service Porlamar. Flights from Caracas are inexpensive during the week because the island is a popular weekend destination for the locals.

Did you know there are new direct flights from Moscow and Poland to Margarita Island? Rainbow Tours launched direct flights from Katowice Airport to Porlamar (as of November 2023). There are also new direct flights from Trinidad and Tobago. Looks like there is a new phase of the renewed tourism drive.

You can also  catch a ferry to Isla Margarita  from the north coast of Venezuela. A company called  Conferry  provides this ferry service. 

CURRENCY IN MARGARITA ISLAND

When it comes to the currency in Margarita islands, carry US Dollars. With widespread shortages and skyrocketing hyperinflation,  prices in Venezuela are extremely vulnerable to change . The devaluation of the introduced  bolivar soberano  (BsS), which replaced  the bolivar fuerte  in 2018, caused  Venezuelans to use the US dollars.  The locals use the US dollars for  transactions  and  savings  despite the exchange control established by the Maduro regime.

Bring cash US dollars to Margarita Island in Venezuela and use a parallel market locally. The black market can provide much higher exchange rates. Never use ATMs or official exchange offices due to the low excha nge rates.

You should know it is illegal to advertise the black market exchange rates.

Current situation is so sad. In the mid ’90s the island had a huge marketing campaign in Manhattan and direct flights from NYC. My friends and I went down for a week and it couldn’t have been a better place to just chill on the beach.

I was raised on this island! You did such a good hob here. My husband finally gets to see a good representation of where I’m from! I’ve been looking in to traveling there from Aruba by boat charter. Just a thought for those determined to make it there.

I remember dancing the night away and walking up & down Playa El Agua during the day with a “cocada” in hand. I’m so sad my country is in ruins! I dream of spending a few months in Margarita unfortunately I’m literally in the other corner of the planet and last time I went It took me 37 hours by plane. But for all of you close by … give it a go! Margarita is truly amazing!…and the people!!!! The people are lovely, warm, sweet, sassy, funny and beautiful. I recommend the oysters, lobster and of course, the cocadas. Super cheap and devine.

The Island of Margarita is off the northern most coast of Venezuela, just west of Trinidad. It is a beautiful and tropical island paradise. However, with any paradise comes warnings and dangers. Read on to keep your family and yourself safe while on vacation here.

ATMs vs. Cash

Travelers recommend bringing cash instead of relying on having access to an ATM. There are some banks in Porlamar and Jaungriego , but if you’re staying in a hotel, this can be up to a 30 minute cab ride away. Reportedly, there are no ATMs in Playa el Agua and even if there were they may not work some or most of the time.

One woman says, “I tried several times to get money out but to no avail. After you put your card in and enter your pin number they ask for another security number, which we wasn’t sure about. It then asked you for the amount you wanted (giving you prompts), it then said that this was an invalid amount – no matter how much you entered”.

Daytime Muggings and Pick Pockets

Many travelers recommend that you take the shuttle from the hotel to the beach and other places no matter where you are on the island. No matter how temping and safe it seems to walk through this area, there have been recently reported daytime muggings of tourists. Don’t make yourself a target by walking off alone. You are completely safe in groups. It is also reported that things go missing off the beach when left unattended or next to a sleeping person, just another reason to stay around people you know.

Many people report being pick pocketed while in town at the market. A great trick is to keep $20 in your pocket and the rest of your money safe in your sock or bra. Some clothing even contains hidden pockets. This way, if you do get robbed, you can hand off the $20 and turn out your pockets, saving the rest of your stash.

One of our favorite places is La Laguna de La Restinga, this is a park that is located between the union of the eastern part and the western part of Margarita Island. It consists of mangroves and coastal plains, these are identified by local colors and names as “fishbone”, in this lagoon inhabit different types of fish and mollusks, so you can see them when you visit it.

There is a service of walks that you can take so that you can take the tour, it is usually done by motorboats and includes knowing the entire lagoon and then ending up at the nearby beach. You can get off in flat places where you can walk and take pictures. No one visiting Margarita Island can stop visiting this wonderful place.

How to get to Margarita Island, Venezuela

Not long ago it was quite easy to get to Margarita Island due to the availability of direct flights and all-inclusive packages. Currently, there are no direct flights from North America, Europe or the U.K.. Island. If you are interested in visiting Margarita Island you will need use connecting flights to get there.

Airports - Caracas, Barcelona, Porlamar

Venezuela has a number of airports but there are only three that are of significance to travelers from North America, Europe or the U.K.

Travel Options

Canada to margarita island, venezuela, direct flights - from canada.

Direct flights to Porlamar, Margarita Island (PMV) are available from Canada. During the winter vacation season (Dec-Apr) there are weekly flights departing from Toronto (YYZ) and Montreal (YUL). These flights are sold by charter companies such as Air Transat. Even though they are usually sold as part of an All-Inclusive vacation package it is possible to book them as Air-only. Note: As of Fall 2013 direct flights from Canada to PMV appear to be no longer available.

In-Direct Flights - From Canada

There are several routes to consider.

You could fly to Caracas (CCS) and get a connecting flight to Porlamar (PMV). Unless you require a overnight stay at a hotel this option is not as bad as it sounds. If you do require an overnight stay then I strongly suggest making arrangements with a reputable tour guide such as Walter. Arrangements would include a credible, trustworthy taxi driver to take you to a safe hotel and return you to the airport the next day.

Another option is to fly to a country other than Venezuela which offers flights to Porlamar. For instance starting 2012 Westjetis flying to Port of Spain, Trinidad (POS) where it is possible to get a connecting flight to Porlamar (PMV).

In-Direct Flights - From U.S.

Travelling to Margarita Island from the United States has never been that easy. During the winter season it is possible to book a canadian all-inclusive package with flights leaving Toronto or Montreal direct to Porlamar, Margarita Island (PMV). This option would only appeal to those wanting to travel during the winter season and willing to travel to Canada.

Some other options

• use an american airline to fly to Caracas (CCS) and get a connecting flight on a venezulan airline to Porlamar (PMV)
• use a venezuelan airline out of Miami (MIA) to fly to Caracas (CCS) or Barcelona (BLA) in Venezeula with a connecting flight to Porlamar
• fly to a country such as Trinidad, Colombia, Costa Rica, etc that hosts direct flights to Porlamar, Margarita Island (PMV)

In-Direct Flights - Europe

For those visiting from Europe the best route is to book a flight(s) to Caracas (CCS) and then get a connecting flight to Porlamar (PMV) using a venezuelan airline.
